EB2: How EB2 Visa Path Is Right for Your Career Goals

Ever wondered what it takes to snag an EB2 visa?
It’s one of those things that sounds simple get a fancy degree or be really good at something, and you’re in. But then you start digging, and it’s like unraveling a knot.
The EB2 visa is a U.S. employment-based option for people with advanced degrees or exceptional skills, offering a shot at living and working in the States.
I remember flipping through Cosmopolitan Magazine once, caught up in stories about people chasing big dreams abroad. Those stories hit home real people tackling real challenges.
This guide is for you, whether you’re a professional eyeing a U.S. career or a business owner trying to attract top talent. Let’s break down who qualifies and why it matters.
The EB2 Scene Today
The EB2 visa is buzzing right now. Tech, healthcare, and academia are driving demand, with USCIS reporting processing times of 6 to 12 months in 2024 quicker than the multi-year waits some faced a decade ago.
Why? The U.S. needs skilled workers to fill gaps in industries hit by shortages. But it’s not all smooth sailing. If you’re from a country like India or China, priority date retrogression where visa availability lags can still stall your plans.
I was chatting with a friend who saw a piece on 9figuremedia about how companies are dangling visa sponsorship to lure talent. It makes sense, businesses are getting creative to stay competitive.
Compared to the early 2010s, when EB2 applications faced less scrutiny, today’s process demands tighter documentation. It’s tougher, but the payoff?
A shot at a career in a market hungry for your skills. Are you seeing more employers in your field offering visa support these days?
Diving Into EB2 Eligibility

Let’s get to the nuts and bolts. The EB2 visa splits into two main paths: advanced degree holders and those with exceptional ability.
Each has its own rules, and figuring them out can feel like piecing together a puzzle with half the pieces upside down.
I. Advanced Degree Holders
You need a master’s degree or higher or a bachelor’s plus five years of progressive experience to qualify here. The job you’re applying for has to require that level of education.
Think of a software engineer with a master’s applying for a senior developer role. Sounds simple, right? But if the job could be done by someone with just a bachelor’s, USCIS will push back, no matter how impressive your resume is.
Picture Maria, a civil engineer from Brazil. She’s got a master’s and seven years designing bridges. Her U.S. employer submits a petition for a role that demands a master’s-level engineer.
Her case is solid credentials and job match perfectly. But if the job ad only asked for a bachelor’s, she’d be stuck. It’s a reminder: details matter.
II. Exceptional Ability
This one’s for folks who stand out in their field scientists, artists, business leaders. You need to hit at least three of six criteria, like winning awards, getting coverage in outlets like Coindesk for crypto experts, or earning a top salary.
I heard about a Nigerian data scientist who nailed this with published papers, an AI project, and global recognition. His application wasn’t flawless he had to dig up extra proof but it worked.
Here’s the rub: “exceptional” is subjective. One USCIS officer might love your industry award; another might not care.
Strong evidence, like expert letters or media mentions, is your best bet. Ever wonder how you’d prove you’re exceptional in your field?
III. Labor Certification (PERM)
Most EB2 applicants need a PERM labor certification, where the employer shows no qualified U.S. workers are available. It’s a process ads, interviews, paperwork.
Some skip this with a National Interest Waiver (NIW), but that’s a high bar. Your work has to benefit the U.S. big time, like pioneering a new vaccine.
I read about a researcher who got an NIW for her renewable energy work. No job offer needed, but it took months of prep. It’s a tough call stick with PERM or shoot for NIW?
IV) Comparing the EB2 Paths
So, advanced degree, exceptional ability, or NIW which is your best bet? The advanced degree route is clear-cut if your education and job align, but it’s strict.
Exceptional ability gives you wiggle room but needs more proof and feels chancier. NIW is tempting no job offer, no PERM but you’ve got to sell USCIS on your work’s national impact.
Honestly, I’d lean toward advanced degree if it fits; it’s less of a headache. But if you’re a standout, exceptional ability or NIW could be worth the gamble. Which path sounds like it fits your situation?
What’s on the Horizon for EB2?
The EB2 visa isn’t going anywhere. The U.S. wants skilled workers, especially in STEM, and USCIS is experimenting with digital tools to speed up reviews, maybe cutting wait times by 2026.
But the annual cap of 140,000 employment-based visas means backlogs will linger for some countries. If you’re from, say, Canada or Brazil, you’re in a better spot than applicants from oversubscribed nations.
For businesses nurturing leads, highlighting the EB2’s career potential can draw top talent. For applicants, it’s about preparation gathering documents, securing offers, or exploring NIW.
The system might get smoother, but the core stays the same. I’m curious: how do you think global competition for talent will shape visa policies going forward?
Finally

The EB2 visa opens doors, but it’s not a free pass. Whether you’re chasing an advanced degree path, proving exceptional ability, or aiming for an NIW, it’s all about preparation.
The process can test your patience paperwork, PERM, USCIS quirks. But when it clicks, it’s huge. I was reading Maxim recently, and they had this story about a tech founder who landed an EB2 and built a startup in Silicon Valley.
That kind of win sticks with you. So, what’s your move?
Ready to jump into the EB2 process or help someone else navigate it? Maybe you’re still figuring out if it’s worth the hassle I get it, it’s a lot to think about.

part 2 of the cool interview, and some more pics :>
“Pro-file: Nailing a New Look” pt 2
Q&A with Trent Reznor and Rob Shriden about All That Could Have Been
By Mathew Honen for Macworld on February 1st, 2002

This is a continuation of my previous post, the rest of the interview, and some pictures to go along. I enjoyed reading this interview, they talk about something I don’t see a lot, I hope you enjoy.

Q: What was the experience of using DVD Studio Pro like?
Sheridan: At one point during the set, there are these three giant video screens that come down behind the band and project these incredible videos that Bill Viola [did for us]. During that portion of the set on the DVD, it's cutting between wide and tight shots and shots of Trent singing. But because these screens were so amazing looking, we thought it would be great to be able to switch between an angle where you could just watch the screen and then back to the cut showing the band playing.
Reznor: There some extra things in there that we shouldn't get into too much because over time they'll be revealed. But there are a lot of little hacks into the OS of the DVD, menus that you think pop up differently than they did the last time, to try and make the whole experience immersive. It was fun to be able to see what you could do with the medium and actually do it.
Q: Didn't you record Pretty Hate Machine on a Mac?
Reznor: Yeah, I've had a Mac since the very first one. I was also using a Commodore 64 for MIDI. At the time of Pretty Hate Machine, I had a Mac Plus. I did all the sequencing of that record on that. With Broken, Studio Vision had come out. That was the first marriage of MIDI and digital audio, and that forever changed the way I was going to record. Now that it's gone from recording everything on tape with a few things on the computer to recording everything on the computer, it's really changed the roles of a lot of people in the studio. The programmer's job is much more the engineer now. All the engineers now have to know Pro Tools.

Q: After providing the music for Quake, are you scoring any more games?
Reznor: I've been discussing things with Id Software for Doom III. It's not formalized at this point, but it's something I really want to do. When I did Quake, we were still questioning if the audio was going to be streamed off of CD, which if it wasn't was incredibly limiting. But with as interactive as things are now, and as immersive as the engine they've been working on is graphically, and some of the program is so moody; it's like scoring a film. Yet it's much more intense than a film because it doesn't always go the same way, it has to be interactive. Plus the mood of the game is so dark and evil, it's interesting to me.

Q: What kind of rig do you have in your studio?
Reznor: I set this up several years ago to Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar. It's an SSL analog big console, and we've moved away from two 48-track analog tape to everything being recorded on hard disk. We have 72 tracks of in-and-out ProTools hardware. The main computer in there right now is an 867MHz G4 with 1GB of RAM and several fast SCSI cards. We still use SCSI drives. We have a few of them laying around to always have at least two 36GBs online at all times, and we have a big tape backup system that backs us up every night. We have a secondary Mac in the control room as well that we use for software synthesis and running through plug-ins in real time. I think the coolest thing that's happened in the last few years is with synthesizers going virtual. That's why we have another Mac that's just up to run things in real time, running Reason or Reactor, or a number of software samplers like Battery or Absynth. Reason is from Propellerhead--it's spectacular. There's a lot of gear just being reduced to a PowerBook.
Q: Do you have a Titanium PowerBook?
Reznor: I'm about to as soon as I can get Apple to give me one. In the meantime I've got a gasoline-powered 500MHz G3.

The Lisa Hardware
Reporting on the technical specifications of a computer toward the end of an article is unusual for BYTE, but it emphasizes that the why of Lisa is more important than the what. For part of the market, at least, the Lisa computer will change the emphasis of microcomputing from “How much RAM does it have?” to “What can it do for me?” For example, it is almost misleading to say that the Lisa comes with one megabyte of RAM, even though the fact itself is true. That doesn’t mean that the Lisa is sixteen times better than machines that have 64K bytes of RAM. Nor does it necessarily mean that the Lisa can work on much larger data files than other computers; its application programs each take 200K to 300K bytes, which significantly reduces the memory available for data. It’s more instructive to say, for example, that the Lisa with one megabyte can hold a 100-row by 50-column spreadsheet (as its advertisements state). With this in mind, let’s take a look at the Lisa.
“Lisa” stands for Local Integrated Software Architecture, but it’s really just an excuse to retain Apple’s pet name for the project. The Lisa has a 68000 microprocessor, which is a true 16-bit microcomputer that has a 16-bit data bus, a 24-bit address bus (giving access to 16 megabytes of memory), and 32-bit-wide registers (all but the 16-bit status register). The 68000 in the Lisa runs at a frequency of 5 MHz. It can have up to 1 megabyte of memory with parity and comes standard with one megabyte (1024K bytes).
The video display is a 12-inch monochrome monitor (black and white, not tinted) with a resolution of 720 by 364 pixels. The interlaced image is refreshed at 60 Hz, which eliminates the possibility of eyestrain from subliminal flickering. The video display is completely generated by internal software, so the Lisa can use multiple character sizes and fonts without restriction. It also means that Apple is not restricted to any one style of video image; the designers can radically change the behavior of the system with a new release of software.
The Apple 871 disk drives design (called “twiggy drives” inside the company) are significantly different from conventional floppy-disk drives. Each one uses a 6504 microprocessor as a “smart” interface between it and the Lisa. The drives use special high-density, double-sided floppy disks that have two oval cutouts in the jacket (see photo below). These are essential because the two disk heads, in addition to being on opposite sides of the flat magnetic media, are not pointed at each other with the magnetic media between them, as is the case in all other double-sided floppy-disk drives. Instead, a pad presses the rotating magnetic media to the disk head on the opposite side of the media as is conventionally done with single-headed floppy disks.
Each formatted disk holds 860K bytes of information at a density of 62.5 tracks per inch; together the two drives (standard on the Lisa) hold 1.72 megabytes of data. Each drive also contains a mechanism that releases the disk for removal under program control, which prevents the user from removing a floppy disk prematurely. As with other Apple products, the floppy disks rotate only when the drives are reading or writing data, thus extending the lives of both the drives and the medium.
Apple has done several things to achieve its unusually high data density. The designers used an encoding scheme that keeps a constant data density of 10,000 bits per linear inch; this allows the outer floppy-disk tracks, which have a larger circumference, to store more data than the tracks nearest the center of the disk. In addition, the disk-access system software can move the disk heads in fractions of a track width to search for and find the middle of the track. That’s an important feature when you’re reading disks with small variations in track width.
In addition, the Lisa comes with one Profile (Apple’s 5-1/4-inch Winchester-type hard disk) to the Lisa through its parallel port. It adds 5 megabytes of magnetic storage to the Lisa system, and speeds up the overall operation of the system. Additional Profiles can be added via interface cards.
The Lisa computer is never really turned off. It stores “system preferences” (things like speaker volume and video contrast) and system-configuration information inside the computer. Even when it is turned “off,” it draws enough power to keep the clock/calendar and CMOS memory containing the above information working. When it’s unplugged (for example, when it’s being moved to another location), internal batteries preserve the clock/calendar status and CMOS memory for up to 20 hours.
The Lisa includes two programmable serial ports and one parallel port as well as three expansion-board slots, each of which connects directly to the system bus and has direct memory access (DMA) capabilities. Because none of these slots is filled in any “basic” configuration of the Lisa, they are available for future expansion (unlike the IBM Personal Computer’s five slots, most or all of which are used for much-needed video-display and memory cards). Other features include a built-in speaker and a real-time clock (which can be programmed to execute tasks or turn the computer itself on or off at a given time), a microprocessor-controlled detachable Selectric-style keyboard, and a mouse.
I must thank Apple for including something I’ve wanted to see for a long time: unique serial numbers encoded into memory. The Lisa has two of these: an actual serial number An interesting aspect of the Lisa is that it abandons hardware graphics chips like the NEC 7220 for system software that requires the 68000 microprocessor to generate and maintain the video image. At first, I questioned the wisdom of this decision because it makes the 68000 assume a heavy computational burden that could be transferred from software to hardware. But according to the designers, the use of a dedicated hardware graphics chip would itself limit and slow down the system (for a discussion of this, see the interview on page 90). In particular, the 68000 clock was set at 5 MHz instead of the usual 8 MHz to give the hardware just enough time to access the 32K bytes of screen memory during the machine cycles in which the 68000 is not using the address lines. This gives the Lisa access to the video memory that is transparent to the 68000 (hardware graphics chips severely limit access to the video memory) and results in a static-free image. (Much of the static or “hashing” in graphic video images results from the system accessing the video memory while the circuitry is using it to generate the video image.)
Apple will also be offering the Apple Dot Matrix Printer and the Apple Letter Quality Printer. Apple’s engineers tested many existing printers, chose two (from C. Itoh and Qume, respectively) that best met their needs, then had the companies produce modified versions with Apple-specified hardware and software changes. Apple needed such exacting print quality because the Lisa software is very demanding of both printers. For example, both printers will reproduce almost exactly both the text and graphics that can be displayed on the Lisa screen. In addition, Apple has created special print wheels for its Letter Quality Printer so that you can print normal, italic, underlined, and bold characters without changing print wheels (quite a nice move who’s going to change print wheels several times a page just to get true italics?). The amazing thing about the Apple Dot Matrix Printer is that Apple plans to sell it for around $700 (the Letter Quality Printer will sell for about $2100). Unfortunately for Apple II and III owners, these printers’ tricks are done entirely in software on the Lisa and won’t transfer to other Apple computers.

Slow Start
In the past week, I’ve gathered some sources to read for the literature review and to get an idea of what my deliverables could be. I’ve also started to read some of these sources.
Choosing Sources
When looking for sources, I started with some books that I already had in my kindle library. I had been interested in education and instructional design, so I had picked up a couple of books on these topics. I hadn’t gotten around to reading them yet, so this seemed like a good time to read them.
To look for more books and scholarly articles, I searched the UHWO library. I found a few articles that looked promising and two more books.
Starting the Research Process
Throughout my academic career, reading has always been a bottleneck for me. Although I am visually impaired, I was taught to read print. I feel that I retain information better this way, but it is time consuming. So, I thought I should tackle the books first.
One of the books I pickd up at the library is called “Games, Learning and Society” It starts with a section that introduces educators to the language and technique sof game designers. There’s a chapter that explains how a games’ theme relates to its mechanics an the effects of probability on the player’s experience.
There are two big ideas that I’m noticing in this book. The first, is that learning is a social process. One of the major examples given is the community built around Civilization III. The other idea is that educators should study games that have been designed well and take note of how players learn the mechanics of these games.
Gathering Inspiration
Building a community around a game will likely take too much time, but I can definitely learn from well-designed games and make something of my own.
In the Questionnaire, I wrote down some ideas about a game that could help aspiring software engineers prepare for their technical interviews. The ideas that I had, don’t seem to align with the suggestions given by educator/designers. They seem more like the awkward educational games that we played in school.
Even though the clock is ticking, I’ll need to come up with a better idea. Unfortunately, I’ve been focused on building software lately and haven’t played many games. The thought of looking at what’s popular right now and taking ideas from those games is exciting.
This week, I picked up Civilization VI on the Nintendo Switch. Accessibility complaints aside, I can see how one could learn about world history from this game. By building a civilization from the ground up, players come to understand the challenges that come with balancing the different aspects of society. It can give a student insight into current events.
New Ideas
I’m currently enrolled in a creative writing class where we’re learning to write poetry. I’m wondering if I could make a game around that. I’ve heard it said that the best way to become a bette writer is to read. I’m wondering if there is a way to use games to expose players to poetry and design mechanics In a way that helps them to think about the poems that the game is exposing them to. I might not be great at poetry (I’ve hadn’t written any until this semester), but it’s something I’d like to get better at. Fortunately, I have an instructor who is also a gamer, so maybe she’d be able to point me in the right direction?
What’s Next
I’m planning on taking. a break from “Games, Learning and Society” because it seems to speak more to the community building part of game development which would be out of the scope for my project. I’ve already found some interesting quotes from there and can come bak to It if I have the time. This week, I’m interested in seeing what the other book “Learning by Playing” has to say about making educational games.

Studio III - Method
To design and create Dyslexi-AR, our group followed an iterative design process, which consisted of ongoing research, physical prototyping, interviewing people and product design, in order to improve and refine the Infinity Cube. As a group, we worked on different aspects of the Project to ensure that everything was designed to the best of our abilities.
Dyslexi-AR consists of three parts - the online communication tool - named Te Aroha, the physical artefact, and the augmented reality that is displayed when the infinity cubes are in their correct form. To design all three of these elements, we used a series of softwares, materials and design techniques, in order to ensure that they worked well together and solved their purpose.
During the early stages of the Project, we produced a few prototypes for the Infinity Cube, which was a core part of our project. This cube was revised and designed to fit the theme of Dyslexia. The main aspect of the final four cubes is to provide a visual target for the children to reassemble, and then create a spectacle of Augmented Reality.
In order to design the infinity cubes, we underwent many processes to ensure that the cubes would be build in a perfect manner, keeping little children in mind. We undertook a construction method, testing different images, materials, sizes, as well as colour choices. This allowed us to prototype with paper, plywood, MDF wood, as well as different ways to draw the image onto the cube faces, for example, laser engraving, acrylic paint and glow-in-the-dark paint. These processes were followed somewhat to order, however we had to rush through them, due to time restraints.
Then, we moved onto the next physical aspect of our project. This was the puzzle board, which allowed the user to interact with the images cubes, letters cube as well as the -ending blocks, in order to match the correct word with the representing image. To create this, we used laser cutting and laser engraving techniques, as we wanted to design a large board that could fit all of the components of the project. We also wanted the interface to look visually appealing, and these techniques allowed for a clean cut, as well as a smooth surface.
The softwares we used during the digital production of the project mainly consisted of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Rhino, Vuforia and Microsoft Word. To ensure that we all agreed on the necessary decisions that impacted the project greatly, we also used online sharing methods, like Google Drive. This service allowed us to share our designs and progress videos effectively, while ensuring that the group agreed to the best decisions.
Daniel was the visual design lead for our group, which allowed him to use Adobe Photoshop to draw and colour the images we had decided to use. In this instance, Adobe Photoshop seemed like the best option, as it was a software that Daniel was comfortable and familiar with. His photoshop skills allowed for fast production and character designs that displayed a unique personality.
Adobe Photoshop was also practiced by Kelsea, who used it for arranging images for laser engraving, as well as to design the online communication tool - Te Aroha. Kelsea also acquired skills in using a software called Rhino, as well as Adobe Illustrator, which is necessary for the production of laser engraving techniques. Adobe Illustrator was also used by the group to design and create our project logo. Kelsea also used Microsoft Word to build upon her concept of Te Aroha, the online communication tool. Her methodologies and techniques for user experience and testing were presented in a Booklet, which was designed cleverly on Microsoft Word.
Vaanipriya also used Adobe Photoshop to complete her tasks. She was the animator of the videos that would be presented as part of augmented reality. In her practice, she used Daniel’s Photoshop files to rearrange layers and create any new, necessary layers, before importing each document to Adobe After Effects, in order to start the animation process. She had prior knowledge of the software, which also allowed for fast production and visually and aurally appealing animated videos.
During this process, Vaanipriya also required a voice model, for which she used a fellow BCT student. She recorded the voice of that student spelling all of the words individually, in a gradual manner. For this, she used the ‘voice memos’ app on her phone, as it seemed the most appropriate and quick option at that time, before importing all of the sound files in Audacity, a digital audio editor. Audacity was also another familiar Software for Vaanipriya, which allowed her to manipulate the recordings in order to create a clear and consistent sound file, as well as save it as a ‘.wav’ file.
For the Augmented Reality side of the project, we used a software called Vuforia, which is part of Unity. This is a content-creation engine that also allows for augmented and virtual reality platforms. In choosing this as our main software for augmented reality, we were unsure of the challenges we would face because none of the team members had used this software before, or knew how to code in C# language. Nonetheless, we started the process with experimentation of different target images, for example, using words, plain black and white images, detailed coloured images etc., in order to confirm which one provides the best result. In this case, the best result was the success of Vuforia detecting the target image and displaying a video, as well as audio, on top of the image.
This process came with many challenges though, and required ongoing research to debug errors. This also allowed for coding in C# language, which Vaanipriya was unfamiliar with. Nonetheless, research and tutorials lead to a design that flowed well and worked almost accurately. Due to the procedure we followed, we were unable to perform many tests, in order to ask for feedback. This allowed us to work on the augmented reality until the end of the project, without any insight from the users.
Overall, the methods and tools we have used to inform our project, Dyslexi-AR, have been beneficial, in terms of designing and producing great results. Although we didn’t require feedback for some parts of the Project, we performed user testing and functionality tests wherever necessary. The feedback we received from the tests and interviews allowed for a more refined design, and a successfully functioning artefact, which also solves its purpose of aiding children with Dyslexia learn spelling and word pronunciation in a fun and memorable manner.
Further insight into our processes, methods, tools and techniques can be found in our Tumblr Blogs, which we used to document our progress and research. These blogs also showcase our reflection on Dyslexi-AR and the processes carried out to complete the project.
