??? I mean, he's pretty empathetic? Maybe he does try? But the result is zero.

Ah, yes, there's the actual answer to the previous question.

The lack of nuance is driving me nuts. He speaks fluidly and fluently with his Comfortable People, which is a small group and he doesn't mind that at all. He's extremely clever with language, in fact. BUT on the relatively rare occasion when he's faced with dealing with strangers, he immediately adopts what I would call a flat affect. It's quite a switch.

Or for another example: I consider him extremely compassionate! He suffers thinking about the suffering of others, and he does so regularly and spontaneously. But if I could get an honest answer from the question "what is he like" from, say, the kids we did homeschooling co-op with, I think they'd say he's odd and unexpressive. That guy that's t-posing in the corner.

Sooooo many people rely on the test-taker being able to accurately guess other people's perception of them. That's....weird. "I am considered a compassionate person". By whom!? By me, yes. By someone at a crowded event? Absolutely not. Structuring a test so that you have to answer what you think other people think is so fucking....fucked?

"How to make friends and socialize is a mystery to me."

the boy: "I know how! I just don't. I mean I have like, my ten friends and that's enough. I don't have to have, like, twenty people I keep up with for social norms."

Absolutely fascinating.

me: *casually tries to take an autism test (for my son, not me)*

first question: "I am a sympathetic person"

me: well what do they mean by that!? not enough information! loaded language!

me: *immediately forced to contemplate what that reaction says about ME, neurologically and psychologically*

There both confused for each other, because they almost look alike.
