On 7 July 1980, Paul, Linda and Laurence went to Superbear Studios in Nice, France to record with Ringo the tracks “Attention”, “Private Property” and “Can’t Fight Lightning”, as well as the track “Love’s Full Glory”, for Linda’s personal project. The songs “Attention” and “Private Property” were McCartney’s contributions to Starkey’s album Stop And Smell The Roses, released the following year. Most of these photographs were taken by Wings guitarist Laurence Juber.

On the way to Wisconsin yesterday I stopped at Menards—the big, big, big-box home improvement store with low prices. (Rant about why I hate their 11% rebate perpetual promotion has been deleted now and saved for another time).
I needed three things. Well its a huge store, so needles in a haystack. Even using the store's web site, I couldn't find what I wanted. Eventually an employee got me in the right location for one. Frustrated and eager to get to the campground, I paid for that and left.
An hour later, in a small Wisconsin town, I stopped at an Ace Hardware. Price wasn't a concern now; I just wanted two other things. I found them immediately, and they were reasonably priced too.
As I get older, I realize that scrounging for the best price isn't always the best use of my time.
Another thing that comes with age, dare I say maturity, is not hurrying on road trips. In my college years and into my 20s, when I'd drive from the Twin Cities to Madison I had to make the best time. That meant speeding, worrying about the state patrol, and stopping as little as possible.
I remember one time arriving in to Madison needing to pee so badly it hurt. But proudly, I thought, I wasted no time stopping along I-94. Then I watched TV for three hours. So much for making good time.
This morning, I woke up after nine hours of peaceful sleep. My Garmin watch gave me an excellent sleep score. I decided to drive into town for breakfast. As I motored down a county road, I saw an Amish buggy coming my direction. The horses don't seem to mind cars and trucks, but I make to point to slow down, out of respect for people and animal alike. I glanced at my speedometer—I was already 5 MPH under the speed limit. It's nice to not be in a hurry. These days I don't even tap the brakes when I see a cop car.
Around lunchtime, I closed up the trailer and started for home. When I saw a cheese and meat shop that I've passed a number of times before, I decided to stop. There was no reason to rush home. The shop was just what I hoped it would be. Of the many varieties of beef jerky and brats, I chose a few to bring home.

When I got to Turtle Lake I decided to also stop in the casino. It's been maybe a decade since I set foot inside a casino, and I'd wondered what this place was like.
It was stinky and sad.
I watched frustrated people at a card table—until one guy gave me stink-eye. My presence must have upset his already poor juju. At a craps table another man had some sort of superstition about how he picked up the dice. He carefully positioned them, one side at a time, across the felt, sometimes north-south, other times east-west, until his number was on top. After doing that with each die, he threw them across the table. The stickman quickly retrieved the dice, and the dealer quickly collected the man's chips. Rinse, repeat.
I played a slot machine for about ten minutes, losing $20. I'm all set for another decade of not going to a casino.
When I walked out of the flashy dungeon I reeeked of cigarette smoke. I had to smell like that for 90 more minutes until I got home.
At home, I cleaned up then took the dogs to the park. Today is the first time this season I remember wearing shorts. It so nice outside that I think I'll take one of them to the brewery tonight because we can sit on the patio without freezing.
Oh, I almost forgot. Today one of our campground neighbors had a new puppy—a Miniature Australian Shepherd with the blue merle coat like my Ella and Sulley have. I can't wait for my dogs to meet this one. She was a very outgoing puppy (and I'm a terrible photographer).

So big, so small
Something about this life lately Maybe it is just the little things
Maybe it's just buying an ice cream Or an iced latte Maybe it’s hugging your friends When you’d usually run away Maybe it’s accepting your family’s flaws And letting them be good too Maybe it’s writing again After giving up so easily Maybe it’s playing that silly game Because it makes you happy Maybe it’s running errands with your mom And not internalizing the things she says Maybe it’s saying the things you’d never utter Even if scrawled in a book or speaking to the walls Maybe it’s not waiting for them to change But allowing yourself to Maybe it’s sitting outside Listening to the wind
Maybe it’s the big things I let be small Maybe it's the small things I let be big Maybe it’s what I’ve been given Maybe it’s what I make of it Maybe it’s everything Maybe it’s nothing at all
Maybe that’s just life And maybe I’m okay with that

Stop and smell the roses because the rose will not be there forever. Loved ones will come in and out of your life like bees to a flower. No person can have ultimate control. The flower will wilt; the bee will move on. But that doesn't make the rose any less beautiful. It doesn't make the bee any less important.
And just as the rose droops and dies, so too does it fertilise new growth. The flower will start off small. It will grow thorns to protect itself. Then, after much time and many challenges, it will burst into colour. New bees will come to visit. New loved ones, new experiences, and new hope.
Life is so delicate. It's a butterfly in a storm. Each raindrop feels like a threat to its fragile balance. Yet as storms go, it will come to pass. The sun will shine and soon the butterfly will wonder how it could feel so hopeless. How it could consider dropping to the ground in defeat. How, no matter how tired it may have been, it could consider the sun gone.
Please, smell the roses. Appreciate the bees. And most of all, rest assured in the inevitable return of the sun.

sometimes it really is the little things in life. i’ve always loved the scent of this oatmeal soap, and so my mom randomly decided to buy me a bar the other day. and, i am very happy to report that it very much so does in fact still hit. it’s kinda funny, i have been mega looking forward to washing my hands whenever i can find reason to — just for the oatmeal soap. it just adds this little slice of joy into one of the most mundane parts of my day. man, i really love the little things sometimes.

I am thankful and grateful for the time I've taken for myself to just be still. Still enough to catch my breath, calm my mind, nourish the parts of me that needed rejuvenation. Silence in a world full of noise.
It's okay to take breaks just for that: stillness and silence.

Ya know, the Maitlands would still be alive if Adam had just been polite enough to listen to what the old guy had to say.
