Review of “Mythic Meetup” by Heartmoor Studios

Third game on my Otome Jam 2022 entry play list was Mythic Meetup by Heartmoor Studios.

TL:DR

It might feel like a tribute to another popular indie otome game at first, but it has a lot more to offer. Featuring some very likable, yet believably flawed characters, cute visuals and nice representation.

Story/Writing

Do you also go around clicking random chatroom invite links are end up in the weirdest places in the middle of the night? No? Just me?

Well, that's what happens to the main character - she (pronouns selectable) - a regular, ordinary (well, maybe not super-ordinary) human ends up in a chatroom filled with mythical creatures. Shenanigans and heart-breaking backstories occur as a result.

Each of the chat participants have a distinct writing style, which definitely makes the game come alive.

The main character is mainly a self-insert, with some little backstory pieces scattered throughout the story and a bit of a snarky personality in the non-choice parts of the story. And choices there are a galore - thankfully the developers have provided handy guides on the right ones to pick to end up in the hearts of the eligible mythics.

It's very enjoyable to see representations on the ace/demi spectrum, including flirty ones.

I really loved the fact that the characters were friends in real life as well and appeared together in video calls and in each other's rooms. It definitely gave

A thing that initially threw me off was the chapters being called days. My initial thought was that the plot of the game is happening over the course of several days, but they're more of a series of snippets of what's happening over the course of a longer period of time. I feel like calling them chapters or weeks would have been more friendly.

Another small issue that I noticed is that while you can select your pronouns, some of the scenes default to other characters referring to the main character as they/them instead, but it might be intentional.

Art

The art is definitely cute. Each of the characters have a different background for their room and they match the characters very well.

As the resident memologist, I enjoyed the meme pictures that were scattered through the chat.

I especially liked the programming of the videochat sprites - there are little wobbly effects happening with their arms, which make them seem more alike. Ditto for mirroring effects.

Similarly a great shoutout to the CG programming - I know that under jam limits we work with a very limited set of VN assets and the ending CGs were utilized to the fullest with their panning and other effects.

Music and Voice Acting

There is an original soundtrack and it matches both the scenes and characters very well, without being overpowering and distracting. Everything loops seamlessly, there are relevant sound effects scattered through the game. I also liked the music room which was added in.

All of the videochats are fully voiced and it has good sound mixing. My favorite was Vera Tan's rendition of BestieBB, but honestly - they're all good.

A nice feature that's very, very easy to miss - if you click on the side character's profile and click on the little speaker icon if it's there - it's gonna play a line from them from a few random lines. It was very cute and helped to put a voice behind some of the chat avatars.

GUI/Usability

There is a cute custom GUI and I generally liked using it, especially all of the little bits and bobs that you could click to go to different screens and such. It really made the game feel very immersive.

After some fine-tuning I found the right text speed for me for the autoplay and just watched the chat go on. A little thing that I felt was missing with the autoplay system was a hard pause at the end of the chapter. Once or twice I found myself scrambling to reload saves because the last message of the chapter was quite long and the day change happened before I got to read it.

I'm usually an avid history reader and there were some overflow issues there.

The font size is pretty good if playing on large-screen devices and the font is quite readable for the chat. Increasing the font-size would have been nice for playing on devices with smaller screens (like the Steam Deck) though. Reading white text on yellow for the videochats did get a bit straining on my eyes, but I work with code all day, so they're pretty sensitive come evening when I have time to play games.

Playthrough notes - here be slight spoilers

As usual, I did a live-tweet thread of my biggest impressions.

I started my playthrough with OffKey and I enjoyed the resolution of her backstory.

Next I played BestieBB and they definitely are sharing my No. 1 spot in the rankings due to how much I was vibing with their route. I feel like the conflict was very believable and the resolution as well. To put it in the words of a friend:

Playing watcher hurt me. In a good, self reflective, I have content to talk with my therapist kind of way. I've definitely had the same kind of feelings as he has had in chatrooms throughout my whole life. And I especially loved how part of the conflict was internal and the issues were resolved partially by some very in-depth self reflection.

X's route in comparison was pure fun. I love how it brought the whole team together and the overall flirtiness of everything.

Overall I'm very glad I decided to play this game, will probably play the studio's O2A2 jam entry and can't wait to see what the devs put out next.

Ateez reacts to you falling asleep during an online class!

Warnings: Suggestive content in San’s part and a bit of swearing in Jongho’s, nothing too strong though!

Last night, you had been too much into the current show you were watching with him, refusing to go to bed without finishing the first season you ended up convincing your boyfriend to stay up for a little longer than usual since, your classes would be online the next day and you wouldn’t have to wake up as early as you did. 

However, one more episode turned into four more and the amount of sleep you got was definitely not enough to get through the online lectures you had the next morning.

He was on his way to the living room, holding a steamy mug of coffee in his hands when his eyes drifted to the door of the little studio the two of you had set up during quarantine for classes and work. 

It was partially opened and curiosity got the best of him.

Seonghwa quietly approached the door, peeking inside just to check how you were doing with a small smile on his lips. He felt bad when he saw your tired expression this morning and even though you had assured him you weren’t that exhausted, he knew you too well to know you could barely keep your eyes opened.

A small frown appeared on his face when his eyes landed on your figure, he couldn’t see your face from the door since you were facing the wall but the way your shoulders calmly moved up and down with each breath you took, the way your head was rested on your hand gave away that you were sleeping and no longer attending to your lecture.

As quietly as he could and avoiding to appear on your camera, Seonghwa slipped into the room, tip toeing closer and closer to you until he was standing besides your sleeping form.

“Babe” He whispered, placing the mug of coffee down onto your desk, resting his hand on your shoulder to gently shake you awake. You bolted on your seat, eyes instantly flying to the screen, your cheeks quickly getting red when you realized everyone had probably noticed you had been sleeping “Here” Seonghwa pushed the coffee closer to you with a small smile, feeling slightly guilty for letting you stay awake until so late knowing you had classes “Thirty minutes left and then you can get some more sleep...Hwaiting!” After ruffling your hair affectionately, Seonghwa walked out of the room to prepare another coffee for himself.

The two of you were working side by side comfortably.

Since you were wearing headphones and barely talked during your online classes, Hongjoong didn’t mind sharing a desk with you while he worked on his lyrics, it was a good method to spend time together even when the two of you had work to do. Besides, since quarantine had started, it was easier for him to get stressed when he tried to get some work done but he had recently found out that it was less difficult to remain calm when he worked with you by his side, even when you didn’t talk with each other, your presence was simply enough.

Used to hearing you hum from time to time to let your know professor were were still paying attention to whatever he was saying, Hongjoong forced his eyes away from his own laptop to find you there asleep, arms crossed on the desk and head resting onto them. On a normal occasion, your boyfriend would have taken his time to admire you and your relaxed, beautiful features but he would be lying if he didn’t say he lowkey panicked when he realized you had fallen asleep during class.

“(Y/N)” He called you out first, whispering so nobody would hear him “(Y/N)!” He tried a bit louder, reaching out to shake you awake when you didn’t respond to his voice, slightly panicking when he saw a few of your classmates giggling.

“What!?” You jumped on your chair, hair messy and eyes frantically looking around the room, clearly disorientated. Hongjoong quietly motioned to the screen, pointing with his finger at it “Oh sh-” You sat up straight when you realized your class wasn’t over, clearing your throat and interrupting yourself before you could swear in front of everybody “S-Shall you repeat that professor? I didn’t understand it” You stuttered blushing, biting your lip to not laugh when Hongjoong chuckled besides you.

Shirtless and all sweaty from his workout, Yunho walked into the bedroom the two of you shared, with a towel around his neck, drying the sweat that rolled off the back part of his hair, in order to get some clean clothes before his usual shower.

“Hey babe I-” 

Yunho instantly froze when his eyes found your opened laptop, camera on and screen full of your classmates’ faces along with your professor’s. Your mic had probably been on too because, as soon as he spoke, every pair of eyes in the videochat flew to him, making him panick even more. 

“(Y/N)!” He shouted, instantly moving away from the door so nobody would be able to stare at him anymore. 

The loud tone of his voice jolted you awake, standing up from your chair but almost falling down on your butt when your knees refused to hold your weight all of a sudden.

“What? What’s wrong!?” You shouted, eyes barely opened as your brain tried to process what was going on. Yunho didn’t need to look at your screen to know everybody was laughing their asses off at the situation, even your professor was probably amused by it.

“The laptop!” Yunho screeched, totally frustrated, you had been so far gone into your dreams that you didn’t even remember you were in one of your online classes.

“The lap-” You froze when you found your whole class staring at you, laughing at what had just happened. Even your professor was smiling. “Uh...Hi guys? Sorry about that”

“Don’t worry (Y/N), your boyfriend definitely made our morning better!” One of your classmates exclaimed, making you blush even harder but stealing chuckles from you when the professor scolded her.

He had decided to stay in the bedroom and keep watching the show he had been hooked on since a few days when you told him you had online classes. The television in the living room was bigger but you had insisted on taking the couch since, there was no way you would be able to keep yourself awake if you attended your online classes in bed.

When one of the episodes was over, Yeosang paused it for a bathroom break, willing to get some snacks from the kitchen before continuing his little marathon. However, on his way to the bathroom, he couldn’t help but frowned when he didn’t hear any sounds coming from where you were supposed to be. Slightly worried, he poked his head into the living room, gasping alarmed when he found your eyes closed and head leant back against the couch. Little snores were exiting your lips and although he found them cute, he prayed your classmates hadn’t been able to hear you and make fun of you. 

Panicking, he rushed into the room, getting closer to the laptop before slamming it closed so hard that he woke you up. He didn’t even care about the class, all he had wanted to do was save you from the neverending teasing you would get if somebody had heard your snoring. 

You whined tiredly, reaching up to rub your eyes, frowning confused when you found your boyfriend standing there, hand still on your laptop “Was class over?” 

“No” He answered honestly “But you were snoring and...I just panicked...And...”

“I WAS WHAT?” You exclaimed, waking up all of a sudden.

“I mean it was cute” He simply replied with a small smile, running his fingers through his hair as he looked down at you “I think I closed the laptop before anyone could notice you were sleeping though”

“Thanks babe” You whined, still feeling sleepy as you leaned back against the couch, ready to keep going with your nap “You are a life saver”

Sitting besides you on the couch, San had been going through his social media as he patiently waited for your online class to be finished. Inmersed in all the tweets he had been reading, he didn’t even realized that, at some point during your lecture, you had closed your eyes for a little bit too long and ended up falling asleep in front of everybody.

In fact, it wasn’t until the idea of getting a little naughty and doing some innocent teasing popped into his mind, that San finally forced his undivided attention away from his social media and placed some of it onto you.

Without turning to face you yet, he moved one of his hands away from his phone and rested it on your thigh. His big palm caressed your flesh, massaging and applying some pressure on random spots, biting his lip to avoid smirking as widely as he wanted too. San awaited for your complains, he awaited for your quiet whines and unsuccesful attempts of moving away when his hand slid further down into your inner thigh but, when nothing of that came, he couldn’t help but frown confused.

Not knowing if he had gotten too far and you were simply ignoring him, San turned to face you, getting all surprised when he realized you hadn’t been ignoring him but sleeping all this time.

“Baby” He whispered, moving his hand up to your shoulder to gently shake you awake “Babe, your class isn’t over yet” He said quietly, biting down onto his lower lip to not laugh when he saw the slighlty panicked expression you pulled off as soon as you opened your eyes

With his headphones on, Mingi hummed the new song him and Hongjoong had been working on for the past week. Too focused on the music blaring into his ears, he danced while he walked, already visualizing himself in the music video they would start filming as soon as quarantine was over. 

Unfortunately, he was so into the song that, he didn’t noticed your laptop charger on the floor and as a consequence, he tripped on it, landing down on top of your body, on the couch. The coffee table where your laptop had been shook with the impact and you, who had been asleep as soon as the lecture started, jolted awake, kicking the table in the process and whining in pain.

All your classmates stopped paying attention to the class to focus on the little scene you’ve just starred in with Mingi, your sleepy mind instantly waking up and reaching out to close the laptop before somebody could start making questions.

“Did I hurt you?” Mingi asked concerned, getting off of you to sit down besides you, a worried look on his face as his eyes scanned you for eny injuries.

“No, I’m fine” You assured gently, heart pounding against your chest “I was just surprised”

“Why didn’t you warn me?” He asked pouting, looking at you accusingly

A shy smiled appeared on your face “I might had fallen asleep during class? I didn’t even see you walk in” You replied, scratching the back part of your neck.

“Aish, we’re such a mess” Mingi muttered laughing quietly, face palming himself.

Since you woke up with little to no time to prepare yourself before your first online class started, the thought of you being hungry appeared on Wooyoung’s mind as soon as he started cooking for himself. So, being the good boyfriend he was, he made some toasts, peeled some fruit and got some warm coffee for you, in other to make you feel a little bit more energetic for the rest of the morning with all that food.

He nudged the door of the studio opened with his hip, holding the tray with his hands and happily walked inside, careful to keep himself out of your camera so nobody would noticed he was there with you.

“Here, I’ve brought you some-” Wooyoung’s words got stuck on his throat when he realized you were asleep and he slightly started panicking when his eyes lowered to your laptop’s screen and saw your classmates and professor looking at you, laughter loud as they tried to get you to wake up. 

Not really knowing what he was doing, Wooyoung instantly turned the laptop in his direction, making the camera face him instead of you. “H-hey!” He stuttered, feeling nervous for some stupid reason. He had performed in front of thousands of people, why did he felt so intimidated by a class? “I apologized for (Y/N), we had a long night and-”

People started whistling and cheering at his words, Wooyoung didn’t really realized what he had said until a few seconds later, feeling even more embarrased when your professor stared dissaprovingly at him.

“I-I...Yah! It’s not like that!” He whined, surprised that you were still sleeping with him whining so loudly besides you “Sorry for....Everything and....Later!” Wooyoung hung up on the call, closing your laptop as he let out a tired sigh “She’s definitely going to kill me for this”

Jongho knew you were asleep. He couldn’t see your face from the door but by the way your shoulders rose and fell with every breath you took, he could easily sense you were deep in whatever dream you were having. 

Walking in the room and getting closer to you in order to wake you up without being noticed would be totally impossible, as soon as he stepped into the bedroom, he would be noticed by everyone in the call and your professor would scold you once again for distracting the rest of the people with your boyfriend. The idea he got was probably stupid, he didn’t even know if it would work but it would at least, wake you up if it did, which was exactly the objective he was aiming for.

With a pillow in his hand, Jongho bit onto his lower lip in concentration before tossing it as hard as he could in your direction. Succesfully, the pillow hit your head but then the unexpected happened. 

Since you had been caught off guard, your head slipped foward, hitting the keyboard with your forehead and making you groan loud enough for everybody to notice. The pillow bounced on your head, knocking off the mug of coffee you had by your side and flooding your entire desk with the bitter liquid. Everything in this situation was just a chaotic mess and you didn’t even know what was happening since you had just woken up.

The scene would be extremely funny if it wasn’t for the anger he could see radiating off of you.

“Jongho, what the fuck!?”

“Sorry!” He apologized, running away as he tried not to laugh for his own sake.

Top 5 Violetta episodes 💕

Little note before I start, I don't know what it is about Violetta, but I have a very hard time remembering specific episodes of this show. Like, I remember the plot of each season just fine, but dividing that plot into episodes just breaks my brain, so I'm gonna do my best here, but remember that this is based on my very limited memory 😅

5 - 1x80

The s1 finale was really the most heartwarming out of the three. It was the one with the highest stakes, since Violetta was preparing to leave her whole life behind, and that goodbye feeling made for so many great emotional moments, my favorite being Vilu's and Fran's chat about how they mean so much more to each other than some silly romance drama. And that final Ser Mejor performance always makes me so emotional, it's insane. Like, that moment when Violetta comes down from the stage and German kisses her on the forhead? Beautiful. Love it. Love this episode.

4 - 3x77

Yes, this is just because of that scene where Camila wanted to practise the kiss with Naty. Sorry but it's one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, and it deserves a place here. Plus it's heavily implied that the girlfriends kiss off screen after that scene is over, so another point for this episode.

3 - 2x50

Fran's goodbye just melted my heart, ok? The way her friends were so desperate to get her to stay, the speeches, the goodbyes, and of course that lovely Hoy Somos Más video/performance, that I honestly think is the best version of the song. Plus, I really love the theme of this episode, with Francesca making her dad understand that even though she loves her family, she also has a whole independent life that she built on her own, and she shouldn't be made to leave it behind.

2 - 3x67??? 3x68???

Ok so I'm not sure about the number of this one, but I'm talking about the episode that comes after Violetta's fall where everyone is thinking Ludmila did it, except for Naty, who is being the best girlfriend yet again. The Luty content on this episode was just perfect, you know? Naty talking to Ludmila in her room and saying that she believes her and that she doesn't need to explain anything to her, Naty arguing with literally all of the Studio kids just to defend Ludmila, that quote that goes like "Ludmila has made a lot of mistakes and I know that because I'm Naty and I was there for most of them, but I know she wouldn't do this"... it all reminded me of why I love these two so much and why I love Naty so much, and it was just great to see.

1 - 2x42

To me this is hands down the funniest episode of the show, and that's why it's first place. If anyone doesn't remember it, this was the episode where Violetta had lost her voice completely (one of the most entertaining sideplots in the show, I think), so she had a sleepover with Fran and Cami where they did that videochat with Diego and Camila spoke for her. The sleepover as a whole was great, that whole sequence had me craking up to the point that I had to pause to laugh the first few times I watched it, and yeah, it was great. Plus this episode ends with Vilu finding out Fran is moving to Italy, so we can add a bit of heartbreak to the mix too. 10/10 episode, I love it.
