The Philosophy of Compassion
The philosophy of compassion explores the ethical, metaphysical, and existential significance of our ability to empathize with the suffering of others. Across cultures and traditions, compassion is regarded as a core virtue—a bridge between self and other, rooted in shared vulnerability and moral concern.
Core Themes in the Philosophy of Compassion:
1. Ethical Foundation
Compassion is central to many ethical systems:
In Buddhist philosophy, compassion (karuṇā) is one of the Four Immeasurables and a path to enlightenment.
In Christian ethics, compassion mirrors divine love and is embodied in the idea of agape—selfless love.
Utilitarian thinkers like Peter Singer argue for effective altruism, where compassion must be rationally directed to maximize well-being.
Here, compassion functions as both motive and guide, directing moral action and shaping how we respond to injustice, pain, and inequality.
2. Metaphysical Interconnectedness
Compassion implies a non-dualistic view of human existence. We suffer with others because we recognize our shared nature. In this sense, compassion reflects a relational ontology: the self is not isolated but fundamentally connected to others.
3. Compassion vs. Pity
Philosophically, compassion is distinct from pity. Pity can be hierarchical or distancing; compassion involves empathy, humility, and action. The Stoics, for example, warned against excessive emotional reaction but made room for sympatheia, or shared human feeling.
4. Schopenhauer and Existential Compassion
Arthur Schopenhauer, a rare Western philosopher who centered compassion, argued it is the only true moral motive. Because life is defined by suffering, ethics must emerge from the ability to identify with that suffering in others.
5. Compassion and Justice
There is a tension between compassion and justice: compassion is individual and emotional; justice is systemic and impersonal. Some philosophers argue for balancing both—ensuring empathy doesn’t override fairness, but also that justice is not stripped of humanity.
Summary:
The philosophy of compassion frames it as a moral intuition, existential truth, and social necessity. It asks us to see beyond the self, to acknowledge shared vulnerability, and to act with care. Whether as a spiritual path, a political ethic, or a personal virtue, compassion challenges the ego and expands the boundaries of moral concern.

recently, Israel sent down hellfire missiles near a hospital in Gaza, which are missiles that explode into blades that slam down and cut through anything in their way. (link)
Tumblr media
There is a video of a man with his legs newly amputated, screaming in a pool of his own blood. I won’t share the video, because it made me vomit into a toilet, but either trust me it exists or go look for it yourselves.
There is another video of a young girl, crying silently after her legs were blown off in an explosion. She explains tonelessly to the camera man that she doesn’t want fake legs because they’ll just remind her of her real ones. She is 13. (link)
A hospital is told to evacuate and they do, all the while waving white flags in a show of surrender. The IDF shoot at them anyway. (link)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in Israel - they begin to enforce one of the most draconian anti-free-speech laws in history.

Israel also claims to be the “only democracy in the Middle East”.
Israel has bombed hospitals, fishing boats, schools, refugee camps, power sources, water tanks, evacuation routes. They have killed 80% of Palestinian journalists, they have killed 100 UN workers, they have murdered over 4,000 children in 34 days. Because of the lack of food and water, Palestinians have begun to die from starvation, cholera.
If you still support Israel after all this, I believe you’re completely lost. Utterly without any humanity. Nothing could ever excuse this.
In Australia, there is an ongoing list of protests planned, as well as a permanent camp out being set up in Naarm/Melbourne to block Israeli transport company ZIM from shipping weapons. Congressional staffers in the US are finally being gotten through to - in spite of their rampant greed and long-suffering inhumanity, even they can recognise when their phones won't stop ringing with people saying flat out they'll never vote for them again.

To be clear, Jinx didn’t magically go from being schizophrenic and severely mentally unstable to “just a little quirky and chaotic” from season 1 to season 2. She’s just not living with and dependent on someone who is actively trying to make her mental health worse for his personal gain anymore.
Also, adopting a kid and receiving unconditional love again for the first time in almost 10 years probably helped a lot. As did reconnecting with her sister whom she was manipulated into believing was the cause of her problems and pain.

I think depictions of Anya being cruel to Curly or drawing out his suffering are artful and chilling but completely miss the point of the story and her character.
I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to have that "I told you so" moment with him but not in something callous or cold. Even if that is how it happened, she'd immediately feel guilty cause at that point she's not tormenting her tormenter or even the person truly at fault. She's doing something cathartic, similar to how Jimmy likely hits Curly to release rage he can't against the rest of the crew. She'd see herself as no different when she'd come back from the moment and see Curly cowering at her. She wants someone to take responsibility but how does being cruel to the defenseless help? Why would she want the power Jimmy has over her over Curly?
The idea of her extending someone else's pain is just so against the struggles she already faces and how she can't even bring herself to cause someone pain even to help them. Her very desire is to release herself from her own suffering and I doubt she'd even fine some sort of guilty release in being cruel to another.
#anya is not a character i see taking agency or indulging in cathartic behaviors#not knowingly like i see her as a character trapped in her head and maybe in the scenario she's cruel to Curly she is envisioning Jimmy#in his place but its not a story about justice or those deserving of punishment and those not like its the opposite of people projecting#their issues on the wrong people and saying things to the wrong people and doing things they shouldn't but anya uniquely falls out of it as#she is subjected to a lot of it but it is also not something she wants to subject another person to like you are doing what Jimmy does and#placing ur rage into another persons and viewing their actions through your eyes like she'd more likely yell at him than do harm or#cause him more pain like at least make it in character#but also she clearly doesn't want to see jimmy or curly in the same light and doesnt because she still repeatedly goes to Curly for comfort#and protection and god there's like concepts that need to be applied to characters individually and then the story as a whole#we can not view the game through only one themed lens less we forget to inspect the compounding factor of Anya is so much more than girl#that needs to be allowed to go off but a woman that simply wants right to be done by her and no more harm like she doesn't want to be aroun#the suffering like idk but some of yall would just benefit from like understanding that people are inherently grey with the capabilities of#black n white thinking or actions#mouthwashing#mouthwashing game#anya mouthwashing#i like her the most but then again i am defensive of all women in media and hate when people change the way the character would take agency#for themselves like yes I want her to tweak out but she just wouldn't and I like seeing realistic depictions of a woman suffering the way#she is like shes not the type at the end of the movie to have a one liner but feel a shallow freedom cause she needs to realistically heal#idk but its just like there is an obbsession forming with making her character her pain and not how she handles and navigates the issue

i love you atsushi i love your vague and immeasurable purpose i love how fear motivates you more than your values i love how you can forgive any wrongdoing until it’s against you. i love how you carry guilt with you always. i love how your kindness is selfish and most of all i love how you’re too painfully realistic to fit the character archetype people want from you

imagine meeting the love of your life, becoming hopelessly devoted to him since day one, not realising you're in love but loving deeply nonetheless, having the healthiest relationship with them out of every romantic relationship you've ever had before and it's technically not even romantic, existing in what you perceive as platonic domestic bliss while also being right on the gritty, dirty, painful edge of life - and this goes on for like a month and a half, then your soulmate whom you were not aware was your soulmate is gone but then comes back. he comes back wrong. then he goes missing. and you spend the rest of your life looking for him. for ways to bring him back. you mourn his loss more than you mourned the death of the woman you loved. then the narrative catches up to you too and you get ill so you go far away from the place you called home, the place where everyone and everything you loved was - so when things start happening again, you are not there. you are not there to help, to search. the love of your life comes back and leaves again and your paths don't cross. two ships in the night who shone in each other's light for a month and a half then spent a lifetime trying to find each other and failed.
