The Day Dream
Artist: Dante Gabriel Rossetti (English, 1828–1882)
Date: 1880
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom
Description
The sitter for this painting was Jane Morris, the wife of William Morris, who often posed for Rossetti. At the time this was painted Rossetti was involved in an illicit love affair with Jane. He shows her sitting in the branches of a sycamore tree and holding a sprig of honeysuckle. This sweet-smelling climbing plant symbolized the bonds of love for the Victorians, and Rossetti may have included it here as a subtle reference to the relationship between artist and model. Rossetti was also a poet, and the title relates to his poem of the same name which ends:
She dreams; till now on her forgotten book Drops the forgotten blossom from her hand.

I grew up on a distant country road in West Virginia. I’ve had family roots on that road as far back as the late 1700s.
When my wife and I first married, we stayed in an apartment but after 7 or 8 months, we moved to a early 1900s farmhouse we rented from a family friend on that road. My grandmother had rented this house from the same landlord in the 1970s
This farmhouse has a peaceful hay field up the road to the west. At the other end of the tree tunnel by the driveway, there is a beautiful window into that field with an old sycamore tree on a creek bend.
During the three years we lived there, I managed to take the same shots during each season and I loved the way they look aligned together.

Our Sycamore Tree
Sitting on the bench with you looking up Arms around each other She stretches above us white trunk and branches reaching out teaching us to wonder while giving us her shelter Today her leaves are a mix of oranges, yellows, and browns She is enchanting and every moment with you on this bench under her shelter is enchanting too There’s something about this Sycamore tree and the…

What’s your favourite type of tree?
Every time I think about sycamore trees, I think of him.
Like the time we've woven together. Rough patches, soft whispers.
Branches reaching out and intertwining, yet sometimes swaying apart.
Yet the roots that are deep and steadfast remind me of our bond.
Like sycamores, we bend, we sway, but never break.
In this forest of life hand in hand we'll create our own ecosystem. A testament to growth, to change. Resilient, ever-reaching, forever intertwined.
At the same time, his beauty resembles a sycamore tree as well.
I could write about him for hours on end.
