22nd Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival FILM REVIEW: Yossi (2012)ã/ã第22åæ±äº¬åœéã¬ãºãã¢ã³ïŒã²ã€æ ç»ç¥ãæ ç»è©ãYossi (2012)
The early thirties is a queer time in life. Not quite disillusioned or desperate enough for a mid-life crisis, yet no longer with a youthâs sense of infinite possibilities and new horizons to explore. The desire to leap to greater heights is not completely lost. Weighing one down are the disappointments, woes and responsibilities that have accumulated over the years as have the many extra layers of flesh around the waist. They become a kind of life buoy that keeps one suspended in a state of inertia, unable to rise completely out of the water, nor to sink completely underwater. It is a time in life that feels like things have come to an absolute standstill. Hamlet, spending most of his time on stage agonizing over whether or not to take action, is an epitome such thirtysomethings. When he says, âThe readiness is all,â he refers to the inevitability of death, yet he could also be describing the general condition of those in their early thirties: as Dante writes, âIn the middle of the road of my life, I woke in the dark wood where the true way was wholly lost,â and all he can do is to be prepared for whatever may come.
Israeli director Eytan Foxâs Yossi (2012) is a tale of a man in such a state of suspension. The film is a sequel to the 2004 Yossi and Jagger. The first film explored a young manâs self-awakening and his first steps into a previously unimagined world. Yossi, serving as a Commander in the Israeli army on the boarder of Lebanon, sequesters himself within a disciplined and orderly life. That is, until the charismatic Jagger rattles the equanimity he has established for himself. Love and desire urge him to venture into unfamiliar territory in pursuit of new-found happiness, which tragedy then undermines.
Yossi takes place nearly a decade after this tragedy. The protagonist has become a cardiologist, who has virtually no life outside of work. His only friends are two of his colleagues, each of whom depends on Yossi to get through their own troubles. In a typically understated but heart-wrenching scene, Yossi spurns the advances of one of them, a nurse. When he apologizes, âItâs complicated,â her reply is, âItâs complicated for me, too. I thought that togetherâŠ.â Most people who have lived for over thirty years have baggage and moments from their past they would prefer not to face. Someone who understands this is willing to seek companionship without touching upon the past, as this will force them to confront their own past, as well.
In contrast to this is Tom, the young soldier Yossi picks up on the way to the Sinai Peninsula. Carefree and unapologetic about who he is, Tom loves club music and massages. He demands to see all, including the past and the folds of flesh. When the two finally fall into bed together, Tom will not let Yossi turn out the lights. Tom is unflinching and ruthless in forcing Yossi to come to terms with who he has become.
This is a story of an individual, but it is also possible to read it as a political allegory. With over sixty turbulent years, Israel is no longer a new and hopeful nation, yet it does not have centuries of history to fall back on, either. Will it be the older generation, who experienced the fighting and conflicts, or the younger generation who are at a remove from the past, that will be able to propel the country forward?
The audience must wait until the final scene of the film for an indication of what kind of decision Yossi will make. Whether or not he decides to embrace Tom and his own past, it cannot be denied that sparks fly in his encounter with this twenty-four year old. The Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has reached its twenty-second year. For anyone who has any kind of baggage, the selection of films that the Festival has lined up is bound to help you reflect upon your own life and to ignite sparks in you. So why not plan a rendezvous with this twenty-two year old! The TILGFF will be held 5-6 July at the Tokyo Womenâs Plaza Hall and 12-15 July at the Spiral Hall in Aoyama. Kimiâs G-Spot will hold a special workshop on The Celluloid Closet in conjunction with the TILGFF on 7 July.   âThe course of true love never did run smooth;â this line from Midsummer Nightâs Dream will resonate with anyone who has been or is in love. And it is the focus of Tom Gustafsonâs charming cinematic take on Shakespeareâs play, Were the World Mine. Timothy, part Helena and part Puck, endures the physical and verbal taunts of his classmates at an exclusive all-boyâs high school. To make matters worse, he furtively pines for Jonathan, the school jock. All this changes as the enigmatic teacher, Ms Tebbit, casts him as Puck in a student production of Midsummer Nightâs Dream. She gives him Max Reinhartâs edition of the play, which reveals to him the recipe for the love-in-idleness juice. As Timothy, first mistakenly, then intentionally applies this magic love potion to his classmates and the people of the conservative town, they begin to experience the pain and pleasures of being in love. The film explores love in its many forms: a parentâs love for a troubled child, a husbandâs love for an indifferent wife, a married womanâs love for another woman, a girlâs love for a boy in love with another boy, the rivalry of two boys in love with the same person, and of course, the love two boys share for each other.

There is nothing new in the premise of this film that has the characters âwalking in someone elseâs shoes,â as Atticus Finch put it. Even so, its charm is as potent as the love juice, and it is bound to enchant a diverse audience. Lovers of Shakespeare will enjoy unraveling the parallels with Midsummer. Those who are going through the trials and tribulations of high school will find consolation in Timothyâs journey. Some might see the film as a spoof of teen comedies such as High School Musical. The yaoi crowd will, no doubt, swoon over the vulnerable and bright-eyed Tanner Cohen, who plays Timothy. In the end, though, it is probably the gentle and magical tone of the film that makes it a crowd-pleaser. As it is a low-budget, independent film, the sets and costumes often look handmade, yet this adds to the otherworldliness; the audience is transported from the real world into a strange dream-like vision. Puck cries, âwhat fools these mortals be!â as he observes the characters who all fall head over heels in love. This dream will cast its magic over the audience and make them long for such a love that will make them fools, as well. I urge you to experience the magical journey together with Timothy in order to learn whether or not Timothy wakes from this dream, and whether or not true love becomes a reality for him.
Were the World Mine was screened during the 2008 Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, but was never released in general theaters nor made available on DVD in Japan. Fortunately, it has been included as part of the program for the âTILGFF One-Day Screening in Springâ on 29 April. If you have plans to be in Tokyo during the Tokyo Rainbow Week 2013, what better way to begin early summer than immersing yourself in this Midsummer Nightâs Dream. The One-Day Screening will also include the highly acclaimed documentary about country singer, Chely Wright, coming out, and three short films from Japan and Taiwan.
