AO3 finally canonized monsterfucking!!!

I have been waiting for this for the entire time I've been using AO3! Here it is:

Having it as a canonical tag means that you can now use the filters on all of the 11,598 works that use it as a tag, whereas before, you could not sort or filter at all.

For instance, all you folks who have trouble finding sapphic monster fics, you can filter by F/F to find the 951 matching fics.

Or if you want to find all the monster breeding and knotting fics that are not A/B/O, you can easily narrow it down to those 255 fics.

The possibilities are endless! I'm unreasonably excited about this change. I'm going to have so much reading to do now, folks.

I fully understand why "character A is astounded at the sight of character B's penis" is a specific kink that gets tagged for, but the fact that some platforms choose to tag this kink as "penis awe" is unintentionally very funny. Now I'm picturing penis experience kink tags for all those other allegedly transcendent emotions in the glossary of your Philosophy 101 textbook. Penis faith. Penis Weltschmerz. Penis apprehension of the absurd.

(NEW?) TUMBLR TAGGING PSA:

heads up, folks! it looks like - EVEN AND ESPECIALLY ON YOUR CUSTOM BLOG VIEW!!! - tumblr only counts the first twenty tags! on a post! after this, the post won't show up in that tag, not even on your blog

so if you have a personal art tag but you put it at the bottom of the post under all of the #switch #nintendo #mario #bros #64 etc etc etc bloat tags, it doesn't work.

please put your most relevant tags first! having an art tag that doesn't have all your art posts in it is basically useless, after all

there used to be a saying that tumblr search only counted the first five tags on a post, which is why crosstagging for reach was pointless. tumblr has since updated to count twenty tags - at a cost. any tags after #20 apparently do not show up in that tag on your own blog.

i found this out because i was looking at someone's cool mario 64 art project, and because they put the tag for the project at the very bottom of their tags, the final post NEVER showed up in their tag for the project when i was browsing it ON THEIR BLOG (very different tumblr behavior than it used to be years ago!). i did finally stumble on the final post of the project, thankfully, and realizing what happend, i started counting. tumblr counts the first 20 tags, but tag #21 and all after are useless.

hot late night take: people are pissed about authors on ao3 who use the “chose not to warn” tag/warning on fics because they feel entitled to all fics and are frustrated when those fics are not explicitly written, tagged, and catered toward them specifically.

telling them “just filter those fics out” doesn’t work because deep down these bean soup fanatics think that they are entitled to every fic.

"Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" is a warning.

It is a warning that there will be no further warnings. That's what it means. It was designed into the structure of AO3's tagging system for a reason. If you only want to read fic with specific, distinct content warnings, you should not read "Chose Not to Warn" fics. Period. If you choose to read them, that is on you.

Regardless of whether you think the author is an asshole for any other reason, regardless of what you think of the fic they wrote, they're not the asshole for using that tag correctly and as it was designed.

I am begging, begging y’all to understand the difference between gore and body horror please.

Body horror is transformation/monstrous sort of things like a mouth where you shouldn’t have one or like, the shifting bones and whatnot in werewolf transformations. It is where something horrific is happening within the body itself.

It is not a bloody nose, cuts, wounds, injuries ect. That is gore. It is not scars, limb differences, or visual disabilities either.

For fuck’s sake please learn this stuff because the next time I see someone tagging a scarred or disabled character as “body horror” I am gonna lose it.

Currently about 2/3rds of the way through a fic based on this, hoping to post it later tonight.

Problem: Mobei-Jun starts the sexing before Shang Qinghua is fully aware that he will survive after and that the shrine/temple is for him. He just thinks that he'll get to go out having been thoroughly sexed up right before. He's fully on board with the sex, if not what he assumes will happen after; he's pretty sure that death is happening either way, so sex before is absolutely the preferable choice. It's only after orgasms happen that he gets clued in on who the shrine is for and that death is not happening here.

How do I tag this?

Is this worth a cautionary dubcon tag plus an explanation in the opening notes, or nah? If not, what do I tag it with? It's not an assumed "fuck or die" situation, it's an assumed "fuck or not, die either way" situation, which certainly puts some sort of weird psychological shit into play, but not in any way that I know how to tag for. Aside from "No character death".

Help, please!

Mobei Jun figures out Shang Qinghua is a god and builds an elaborate temple with a big fancy altar for them to one day have sex on (once Qinghua deems him worthy and admits his godhood to him), and Shang Qinghua is freaking out because he thinks it's for blood sacrifices probably.

Every time Mobei Jun says something about worship that is heavy with subtext & implication, Shang Qinghua is just like fuck fuck he's gonna decapitate me on that thing fuck...
