A Winter's Wrath I've been watching a swamp maple, partially downed by the last big winter storm, and wondering if it would survive. Like so many other trees, its twisted upper trunk, snapped like a frail toothpick, lies at a right angle to its base. Cords of resilient wood still attach the two, keeping the body of the tree alive. Although I have my doubts about its long-term survival, it seems to be making a brilliant spring debut. What better bird to festoon its colorful branches than the bright and elusive Prothonotary Warbler. With a plumage of tangerine and olive feathers, this small bird makes its breeding grounds near dark murky streams, and is most at home in areas of dense understory. I was surprised to find it here. It is the first time I've seen it and I've been coming to this spot for a few years. Blatantly Blah I spent a little time last evening checking on my bluebirds and seeing what migratory birds might be hanging out in my woods. I was pleased to find a small flock of yellow-rumpted warblers hunting along the small stream. Blatantly Blah in the fall, while moving north to south, these birds unveil a striking plumage in the spring, on their trek northward.
