WHY MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IS VELVETTE + DISCUSSION AND HEADCANONS ♡°◌̊

1) okay BEGINNING IN PILOT ERA! WE’RE GOING BACK TO 2019 BABY!

:INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:

like most ppl (i think), i barley even noticed Velvette’s approximately 2 second appearance in the pilot!

like holy shit dude. by the time this scene with the Vees played i was already occupied with texting my friends a screenshot of Alastor and typing away about how fucking cool he was and why they should watch this amazing pilot(•̥́_•ૅू˳) (i most definitely used like 5 “XD”s in this message.)

Anywho after my 30th rewatch, The release of the Addict music video, and reading Dirty Healings, I was like “oh theres this trio of villain guys that shows up for like a split second in the pilot. MAYBE I SHOULD PAY ATTENTION?

and of course the first thing i saw was valentinos massive glasses because of the eyecatching gold rims. plus, he was already recognizable to me due to the content i viewed previously. i saw vox next CUZ HES FUCKING BLUE. (also in 2019, tv head deviant art ocs were all the rage right?)

but yet again, i barley noticed velvette(ﾒ・ん・)？

maybe it was her her dark color pallet + primarily magenta design that blended into the background for me? (her selfie with vox was pretty cute tho)

:CURRENT IMPRESSIONS:

fuck, SHE WAS ADORABLE IN PILOT ERA. I DIDNT EVEN RECOGNIZE HER AS THE SAME CHARACTER IN THE MAIN SERIES AT FIRST.

i swear i need to open my eyes cuz her pfp on vox’s phone made it rlly obvious (✧≖‿ゝ≖)

Her accent was a HUGE surprise to me. it fits her current look so much more than her pilot appearance. i was expecting her to have a nifty-esc personality/ voice acting as if to mirror Alastors relationship with her.

While Alastor has Nifty and Husk, I thought Vox’s relationship to Valentino and Velvette would be basically the same…(i was very wrong)

So while i think her lolita/goth/scene/ whatever in the fuck vibe she had going on in the pilot was adorable, im verrryyyy pleased with the design change. ( im not completely happy with her current look BUT THATS NORMAL FOR ME WHEN IT COMES TO HELLAVERSE DESIGNS).

:PILOT DESIGN HEADCANONS:

since the pilot is primarily canon (unless otherwise stated in the main series), i left it up to myself to determine what the reason was for her drastic change in style. esp cuz in the main show she seems to value modern fashion trends and reject anything similar to her old style. heres what i came up with :

a) ez explanation is that velvette simply had an alternative phase. she was on trend in the pilot era and shes on trend again now. if im to assume (probably incorrectly) that the pilot took place in 2019-2020ish, the current fashion trends around that time were all about becoming weird + embracing alternative fashion as opposed to the “basic white girl”, “hipster” , and “baddie” esc trends of the 2010s. when that trend ended, she moved on as well.

b) alternatively, she died with that lolita-esc fashion sense. she was always into alt and/or vintage inspired looks. maybe she was even the weird girl in school and looked to find her “people” online in these niche spaces. resultingly, she blew up and became the social media sensation she is now.

the reason she changed? pressure to be taken seriously as an overlord? Vox’s influence/guidance which taught her the importance of staying current and modern?

or maybe (the headcanon i stick to the most) the change stemmed from a need to find her place among the other two vees. since both vox and valentino were ticking time bombs of emotional instibility, she felt it was her responsibility to become the grounded “voice of reason”. She discovered what it was that the Vees were needing, and became that. By extension, her style cleaned up, becoming more mature.

IN CONCLUSION: Is my obsession with velvette less-so about the canon aspects of her character and more about my own conclusions ive come to about her ?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned something like this already, but this thought has been on my mind for quite some time;

You know who I wanted to see having a duet with Alastor (song battle style)? Velvette.

Hear me out.

There's something similar between the two songs Alastor interrupts, Stayed Gone and Hell's Greatest Dad, especially when it comes to the duality between Alastor's part and the other person's part. Something that I admit I didn't notice at first, but I saw some people commenting on.

Let's talk about Stayed Gone first: all Vox has to say is that Alastor is old and Vox is new. He uses different words every time (fossil, barely audible, his medium is getting rare...), but that's his only argument. While Alastor attacks right into Vox's insecurities. He says that Vox's content is low quality and inconsistent, he belittles Vox's power, and pokes at the wound that was Alastor refusing to "join Vox's team" (whatever that means, not important for my point here).

In Hell's Greatest Dad, Lucifer talks about how he can be useful to Charlie. How he can give her Champagne fountains & caviar mountains without charging her. Alastor focuses on how his relationship to Charlie is (supposedly) very close. He says he's faithful to her, that he makes her laugh, that they have a special bond... Which is what Charlie values most.

ALL THAT TO SAY that Alastor is very good at reading the room, figuring out what people are on about. Now, what other demon we see that has showed to have those same skills and has used them to her advantage in the show? That's right, Velvette.

With a SINGLE glance, she was able to identify that Carmilla was the one that killed the exorcist because of her facial expressions and body language. And then she proceeded to poke Carmilla and Zestial until one of them snapped.

Also, just like I bet Alastor definitely doesn't believe a single word he's saying to Charlie in Hell's Greatest Dad, he just wanted to get under Lucifer's skin while manipulating Charlie, I highly doubt Velvette was serious about starting an actual war with the angels. She (and the Voys too, probably) had a suspicion that it had been an overlord who did it, and she went and tested the theory.

I just think it would be great to finally see someone publicly call Alastor out on all of his bullshit, and Velvette is (in my opinion, of course) a very good character for the role. Besides being very perceptive and good at reading into people's bullshit (she also does that with Vox when she is introduced btw).

She likes to annoy old people, she probably has some background on Al that Vox possibly provided her while lacking the insecurities that Vox has when it comes to Alastor.

It would be very satisfying (to me at least) to see her call him a coward in his face (because he fled Adam's fight when he got injured), or that he might hate Vox but he definitely loooves the attention because he's an attention whore (bonus points if she uses this specific term just to make him uncomfortable). Or even that he's trying so hard to keep this "ominous mysterious dangerous" persona while he's 1- not that powerful, 2- starting to get emotionally attached to the "good guys".

ALSO "you'd be powerless without the Vees" sir you can't convince me that 3 very powerful overlords can't beat 1 up. The Vees are powerful on their own but they're more powerful together and Vox's insecurities aside, they all know it. Alastor is alone, he might be friends with Rosie or the Hotel crew, but his pride wouldn't allow him to seek help in battle, or even emotional help.

Also 2.0 there's the fact that he's been gone for 7 years and while Velvette (and us) might have no idea what he's been up to, I bet the Vees have been growing and expanding their power while Alastor is the same since he left.

So yeah, I think she'd be so great on roasting Alastor. I don't know if I'll ever have a song battle between them but I sure think it would be interesting.

I've been doing these chapters in the middle of work lmao, so if you see a typo or some edits, it's me rereading it after work.

I'm trying to include more Alastor but he's pretty hard to write.

I used Velvette so much here cos I love her as that bitch you love to hate. She is obviously the spokesperson of the Vees

The hotel lobby is filled with unbearable silence as hell's overlords and high members of the Ars Goetia arrive one by one.

Just a few hours ago, Alastor heard from Carmila Carmine that the king had called a meeting for the top ruling people of hell. Charlie doesn't know why her dad called for it in the hotel.

The Ars Goetia (minus Stolas) were whispering among themselves and shooting the sinner overlords dirty looks every now and again. The overlords were good at pretending they couldn't hear anything. Apparently, they at least have the sense to know that that would be a fight they cannot win.

The hotel's residents collectively claimed it as their spot. Husk is talking with Angel quietly, keeping him distracted and out of view of Valentino, Vaggie is holding her spear as she keeps a close eye on the strangers in their home, Nifty is obsessively cleaning a corner of the bar (Husk keeps telling her that it is still dirty just so she won't venture elsewhere), and Cherri is playing with an unlit bomb in her hand.

Rosie and Stolas decided to approach Charlie and Alastor at the bar at the same time, both slightly bowed to her.

Charlie: Prince Stolas. Rosie.

Stolas: Hello, princess.

Charlie: How's Octavia?

Stolas: Via misses your outings together. But she is fine. She's with her mother today.

Rosie: Not that I'm not happy to see ya, Alastor. But why exactly are we here? Our Carmila has not stated a reason why.

Alastor: You know as much as me, my dear.

Stolas: It must be dire. His majesty rarely calls for the Goetia's presence. He is not here yet?

Charlie: No. He went down in Sloth earlier. I'm worried. After what happened yesterday, I..

Rosie: Yesterday? Did something happen, sweetie?

Charlie realizes the slip up and backtracks.

Charlie: Nothing, Rosie!

Rosie gives her a look that tells her they're going to be talking about it later. She gives the overlord a weak thumbs up.

Meanwhile, Velvette decides enough is enough and they have wasted too much time waiting.

Velvette: Ugh! Vois, let's go. This is a fuckin' joke.

Carmila: Velvette, calm yourself.

Valentino: Why should she? I had very important shit to shoot today and me being here is making me lose money.

Alastor: Then perhaps you should step down. Having to attend the bare minimum duty of their title must be so difficult for someone so... undeserving.

The Radio Demon has a giant patronizing grin plastered on his face. Alastor's comment prompted Vox to speak up.

Vox: Oh, you timely piece of shit! Fight us right now, Alastor!

Alastor: How unbecoming. Throwing tantrums in front of royalty!

Velvette: I for one, don't want to sit here waiting for a no-show fossil

Charlie's demon side flares as the demon insults her dad.

Charlie: How fucking dare you?!

Random Goetia: You shall know better than to disrespect your king, insolent pest.

Velvette: Ha! You think we're scared of a bunch of birds?

Alastor: Should have known you three cannot behave for a simple meeting haha!

Soon everyone was yelling obscenities at each other, filling the hotel with chaos. Before a proper fight could break out, the door opens with a bang, silencing every demon.

Lucifer has arrived, following him were the other Sins. They were arguing amongst themselves from behind him. Charlie can only catch glimpses of what is being said as voices overlap each other.

Beelzebub: Bel-

Mammon: Are you fuckin-

Satan: Wrath is-

Leviathan: We cannot-

Asmodeus: Evacuation-

Belphegor: Grown another mile-

Lucifer says nothing the entire time and just takes a seat in the middle of the semi-circle table he conjured up. With the way the table was placed in front of everyone else, Charlie gets the feeling of deja vu of her hearing in heaven. But now her dad will be the one passing judgment.

Most of the sinners in the room back up as the Sins continue to argue with their full form.

Lucifer sits back and raises a hand and the yelling stops.

Back then, she never really understood why demons were afraid of her dad. He was always a silly and happy guy when spending time with her. But one time, she sneaks into his rare meetings with the Sins and sees why he was called the devil.

The anger she saw then could have given her Uncle Satan a run for Uncle Mammon's money.

Lucifer: Thank you all for coming on such short notice. I will cut to the chase. I have called you all here because something is brewing at the very depths of hell. Something that may affect us all.

Stolas: The Ars Goetia is at your disposal, sire. But may I ask what is this about?

Belphegor: I can answer that. A few months ago, an anomaly appeared at the edge of Sloth. It was not a problem until-

She pressed her touchpad and a hologram screen appeared showing the infected ground.

Not a single demon didn't widen their eyes.

Angel: What the fuck is that?

Belphegor: We wouldn't have called you all here if it was not this severe.

She taps and shows a mutilated demon pig.

Belphegor: This is Patient Zero. An animal on a nearby farm made contact with the anomaly. It instantly infected the whole body, controlling the creature whilst killing it slowly. If it can affect an animal like this, we fear what it may do to-

Velvette: And what do you expect us to do about it exactly? Why the fuck would we care about some old place we can't even go to.

Belphegor is briefly stunned by the interruption but ignores the sinner's disrespect.

Belphegor: Because you would have to be naive to think that it will stop in Sloth. We cannot be too careful.

Velvette: So you think we would risk our lives? Yeah. No thanks. How do we even know that it will affect us? It's just a pig. The worst we can get is horrible floor decor.

Lucifer stands up and moves silently towards the middle for everyone to see.

Lucifer: Free will does not mean you are free from consequences.

The king starts to remove his shirt to everyone's panic, except Belphegor.

Mammon: Woah woah, mate. The fuck ya doin?

Lucifer shrugs off the last piece of clothing to reveal the glowing, infected marks. It has not been a day since he touched it but the veins are already covering the entire right half of his torso.

Charlie: Dad!

The princess attempts to go to her father's side but Vaggie holds her back.

Lucifer: Shall we proceed without any more interruptions?

Velvette being completely disinterested and unable to give enough of a fuck to look up from her phone when she’s engrossed in doing something on it- and when she does it’s usually with mild to severe irritation- unless it’s the Vees (sometimes. Occasionally) or Carmilla. At the start she plays it off as not being able to pass off a change to snap back and piss her off but the voys immediately just Know she’s down horrendous

FHAJKSHAJKSHFJKAHFKJG velvette and vox (or all three of them) go to an overlord meeting together (for once) and velvette, who started off staring at her phone, soon delves into staring at carmilla with her phone screen powered off cuz she was inactive for so long . and vox just knows immediately and either looks at val in A Way TM or texts him like "youll NEVER guess who vels down bad for" . val keeps trying to get her to talk about carmilla later and she absolutely refuses

Tobias - Toby's first partner is a Lucario named Blue. He tends to stay quiet most of the time and comes across as reserved, but he's rather skilled in martial arts and he's the protective sort - so it's misleading

Sebastian - Sebby's first partner is an Empoleon named Prince. He's prideful, self-obsessed, and he likes to pick fights with others. But he truly cares about his family. He's just an asshole about it

Justin - Justin's first partner is a Leafeon named Vee. His favorite hobby is woodworking and he has great people skills. He's fairly level headed, but won't pass up an opportunity to tease his siblings

Now @phoenixlionme had another very interesting idea, so again, credit to them for this post about Vaggie VS Velvette. Without transition, let's jump to it.

While they're unconnected and haven't interacted together outside of fanart, both have, indeed, quite the number of common points : they're both the most sane one (well, at least for what was shown up to now) of their group, keeping their focus on their task while Charlie goes singing in the streets without warning and the Hotel residents have their antics, or the "Voys" as Velvette calls them get themselves tangled in their respective fixations and are too busy shooting themselves in the foot. Both are also the respective "backbone" of their group - Velvette outright calls herself as such, and she's not really wrong : while Vox is the face and front, also occasional brains and providing the medium, Val the muscle and providing the content, Velvette provides the notoriety and influence, making sure they are known and in a positive light. She's also the second half of the brains, and the spine.

Vaggie on her side is Charlie's most stable support (and the only one before Lucifer or even Alastor arrived, and Alastor's support comes with strings attached), and the Hotel's manager. She's also the hidden ace in the hole (contrary to Alastor's most obvious one, in all senses of the term regarding him - pun unintended) as the Hotel's protector and secretely Fallen angel, making her also the "spine" of the Hotel and keeping Charlie on track : without her, Charlie's project would have crumbled. Unlike Velvette, though, she's perfectly happy with staying in the shadows, but still at Charlie's side, and is seen along with her instead of in a separate setting : she shares a room with Charlie, while Velvette has her own floor she works on. Vaggie's activities correlate with Charlie's, but she's still her own individual, while Velvette is individualistic enough, but belongs to the Vees group and is counted as one of three Overlords.

They both have short patience (and a short-ish fuse) with their coworkers, being both the ones with their heads on their shoulders : Velvette has to call Vox up when Valentino loses it and starts butchering her employees, and is very much signalling that she's not dealing with that bullshit. Vaggie has to put up with the Hotel's residents, who, bar Husk (and even then, his lethargic alcoholism counts), also are quite the wacky bunch. Funnily enough, Ep 3 both focuses on Vaggie's attempts at manning the trust exercise, and Velvette's entrance at the Overlord meeting, putting them kind of back-to-back. While Velvette has beef with Carmilla, it mirrors both her and Vaggie's way of doing things : they both push people to their limits, drilling them on to a desired result with an imposing personality to match, but on complete opposite ways - Vaggie goes drill sergeant with the goal to build up trust and have people behave themselves into taking things seriously to both help Charlie and the residents of the Hotel, Velvette corners Carmilla to rip information out of her and try to divide to conquer, brazenly boasting a plan and insulting everyone in the room while she's at it.

Vaggie pushes people to do their best to unite them, Velvette tries to drive them apart with her tactics to take advantage. They both prove successful in their respective field : Vaggie's exercise ends up working, bringing the Hotel's residents together and sparking genuine friendship between them (bar Alastor, but he didn't participated anyway), Velvette's tactic gets her valuable information (the fact that Carmilla, a demon, killed the angel, proving demons can uprise against them) - contrasting to Charlie's methods failing (as seen with her breaking down in Ep 5) and Val and Vox immediately getting their own plans canned due to their impulsiveness. Both of them aren't the leaders of their groups (who are Charlie and Vox) yet prove to be the most competent when in charge.

Amusingly, as Phoenixlionme also pointed out, they are the shortest (bar Niffty for Vaggie), and the "youngest arrival in Hell" of their group, potentially : Vaggie was in Hell for 3 years while the others where there for at least 50 years or so (Alastor died in 1933, Angel in 1947, Niffty in the 50s, Husk in the 70s), Velvette is the youngest of the Vees and the most recent Overlord (Vox died in the 50s, Val in the 70s, and while Velvette's date of death is unknown, given her focus on social media, it can't be before the 90s or new 2000's at the very least). Angel has parallels to Valentino and Alastor to Vox, both enemies/rivals of them, Velvette has them with Vaggie on top of having beef with Carmilla, who they end up both connected to : Vaggie wins Carmilla's respect and ends up being mentored by her, approaching her with a genuine ask for help, and understanding Carmilla's motives of wanting to protect her loved ones - a point that connects both (see Out For Love). Velvette's rudeness leads her to be very insolent towards Carmilla in a calculated ploy to rile her up and get info out of it (ironically, also as Phoenixlionme said, Velvette found the dead Exorcist's head, Vaggie is an ex-Exorcist - which Carmilla immediately pointed out, and has no animosity towards Vaggie at all), arrogantly trying to prove herself superior to Carmilla.

A fact that also slipped under my nose but that Phoenixlionme rightfully brought to light is that Vaggie, as the manager, manned the Instagram account (before they were archived) for the Hotel, and in Ep 1 tries to make a commercial for it, while Velvette is obviously connected to social media (funny point : I don't think we've seen Vaggie's phone yet...? Unless I missed something) as its namesake Overlord. They also both opposite trends in fashion : Vaggie keeps it simple, and has changed the least from her pilot appearance, while Velvette has changed the most, and, as a fashionista, is seen with a different outfit and hairstyle each time she appears. They also treat people differently : Vaggie ends up condeeding points and warming up to everyone, accepting them as they are (most glaring example : Sir Pentious and the Egg Bois) as long as it's not dangerous, Velvette is - everyone together now - respectless.

I agree with Phoenixlionme that the Vees will be major antagonists for the Hotel later, plus the Exorcists, but while Angel has to get closure about Valentino and Alastor might get set up against Vox, it is fairly possible that Lute will be actually Charlie's enemy, replacing Adam, (and if Lilith is an antagonist, she'll probably be Lucifer's) while Velvette could potentially be Vaggie's : they both are the hypercompetent friend of their respective groups, the ones with their head on their shoulders keeping the leash on the others so that the chaos doesn't unravel in even worse chaos - the stable pillar at the side of the leader(s) providing vital support. Although, Velvette has her own thing and industry field while Vaggie follows Charlie's idea, but with her own, personal way of doing them : being firm and stern when needed, where Charlie is the gentle guiding hand.

Can't wait for Season 2, honestly. Again, kudos to Phoenixlionme for the request, I'm really glad you submitted it - hadn't thought about that one !
