“So, what’s the plan then?” Charles asked. “Just get Mack out there as soon as possible” Max told him. “I just hope we aren’t too late..” Max whispered to himself as they arrived at the house.

“Is there a way to get into the basement instead of going into the house?” Daniel asked. “Yeah, follow my lead” Max said as they all got out the car.

The four drivers made their way into the back garden and went down towards a window that looked into the basement. All their faces fell once they looked in..

Makayla had tears falling down her face and it looked like she hadn’t slept or ate anything in ages. Max’s face went full of rage.

“I’m actually going to kill him” Max said. “Mate, I know you do but let’s get Mack out there first, okay?” Daniel told him as he nodded.

Max lightly tapped on the window gaining the attention of Makayla, she looked up instantly and a faint smile came on her face before she slowly got up and made her way towards the window.

“Told you I will be here” Max said as he helped his sister out the window and pulled her into his embrace. “I missed you so much..” Makayla mumbled. “I thought I was going to die in there” Makayla added.

“You aren’t going to see him again, I’ve got nearly all the paper work done so I’ll become your legal guardian” Max told her. “Really?!” Makayla exclaimed as tears fell down her face. Max nodded with a bit smile on his face before wiping the tears off his sister’s face.

“Hate to ruin this, but a car just pulled up” Daniel said as Makayla’s eyes widen. “How are you going to get me out without him knowing?!” Makayal asked. “I’ll go talk to him, you three get Mack’s things and stay here until I tell you all to” Max told him.

“Mack, c’mon I’ll help you get some things” Lando said as they all watched Max leave to go to the front of the house. “What if something happens to Max?” Makayla adked.

“He will be fine, he’s been dealing with your father his whole life” Charles told her. “And we are also here if he needs any backup” Daniel added. “Alright, I’ll go get some of my stuff” Makayla said as her and Lando made their way into the house.

Moments later they were back outside and could hear the shouting of Max and Jos. “What’s happening?” Makayla asked. “Just shouting at each other” Charles replied.

“Did he go out last night?” Daniel asked. “He went out like 3 days ago, this is the first time he’s been back” Makayla told them as they all looked at her with concern.

“You’ve been alone down there for 3 days?” Charles said softly. “Yeah…” Makayla mumbled. “Have you had any food or drink?” Lando asked. “Only water…I passed out a few times as well..” Makayla added.

“We need to get you to hospital as soon as possible” Daniel told her. “Can it be in Monaco? I have bad memories of hospitals here” Makayla said. “As long as you go to one,” Charles told her.

“Guys! Lets go, he’s in the house passed out drunk on the couch” Max said as the three drivers and Makayla ran towards the car. “Let’s get you back home” Max whispered as he pulled his sister into a hug.

Lando put Makayla’s stuff in the car, before Daniel started to drive to the airport. Makayla had fallen asleep with her head rested on Max’s head. “Mate, before you take her home she needs to go to the hospital” Charles told him as Max looked confused.

“Why?” Max asked looking down at his sister. “She’s been all alone down there for 3 days without any food, she only had water and told us she’s passed out a few times” Daniel told him.

“I’m going to actually kill him, but I’ll take her to the hospital in Monaco not here” Max said. “Mack said that too, why doesn’t she want to go to hospital here?” Lando asked.

“Her mother died here, we don’t really like going into that hospital. I wasn’t close to her but I know that she protected Mack from a lot. Her last words to me was to protect Mack and that’s what I’m doing” Max told them softly.

“Sorry, if I knew I wouldn’t have asked” Lando added. “It’s alright, don’t worry about it” Max replied. They arrived at the airport moments later and made their way to Max’s jet, Max was carrying his sister.

Makayla woke up quite confused as she looked around she saw that she was in the plane. “Well, hi sleepyhead” Daniel joked seeing her awake as a faint smile appeared on Makayla’s face.

“We are almost in Monaco now, get you straight to the hospital” Max said as she nodded before putting her headphones on to listen to music while looking out the window.

Max smiled at his little sister, happy that he has got her out of the situation with their father. “She looks so peaceful, glad we got her out of there” Daniel said. “Yeah me too, thanks guys for the help” Max replied.

“It’s no problem mate, Mack is like a sister to us as well” Lando added. “We would help her in anyway” Charles said. Eventually, the 5 of them landed back in Monaco where the 3 drivers would leave the Verstappen siblings to go to the hospital.

Makayla hugged the 3 of them before waiting in the car for Max to bid goodbye to his fellow drivers. “You’re going to be alright, okay? It will only be for a few nights or even just a night” Max told her.

“Thanks for everything Max, I owe you so much for doing all this for me. I don’t know how I am ever going to repay you” Makayla said. “It’s my job as an older brother, you don’t need to repay me in anything” Max replied.

“But you’re going to become my legal guardian! You shouldn’t have to worry about doing that, I would just get in the way of everything..” Makayla added as the arrived at the hospital.

Max parked his car and turned to look at his little sister. “Mack, listen. You will never be in the way of me, I want to become your legal guardian because dad has failed to be that. I want you to know what it feels like to have a normal childhood. I know it’s only going to be 2 years till your 18, but we will do everything in these 2 years to make up from all these awful past years” Max told her as they both at tears falling down their faces.

“I love you so much, I couldn’t have asked for a better brother than you” Makayla replied as the hugged tightly before getting out the car. “I love you too Mack, c’mon let’s go and get you better” Max added as the made the way into the hospital.

May 28: Return

Traveling days are so surreal. You start one place, you end up somewhere else. I woke up at 5am in S's guest room, and now I'm on my own couch.

The day was very straightforward, really easy traveling. Really encourages me to take more trips where I just pop up there and then come back down.

We got to the airport super early and then I sat around for a long while because the plane was late in a lackadaisical way. Like oh we were supposed to leave 15 minutes ago, and it's just now showing up... whatever. ADK time for sure. I didn't care; my layover in Boston was long anyway. The plane itself was a full house, all 8 seats full. I was right behind the co-pilot. I slept the whole way.

In Boston, got food and coffee and then just sat for a long time in the rocking chair looking out the window and thinking. I am full of excellent thoughts. Kept scratching the peeling skin of the dumbass boat sunburn at the very top of my forehead where I missed putting on sunscreen like a total fucking rube. The flight itself was fine; on time, not too long; I did stay awake the whole time though.

I checked my bag because I no longer trust TSA not to steal my stuff after they confiscated my host gift on the way up--something that was my fault but I'm big mad about it anyway. So I had to grab that, and I had weird anxiety about it. But it was fine. My ride was there, and I got home about 5, I'd say.

I have literally been on my couch chilling, scrolling, watching TV... shameless. I can't believe it's 10. At least I took off work tomorrow. I have these ideas that I'll clean... mmmmm, we'll see.

I just... loved being home. I've been thinking a lot about my total lack of Home recently but I think, even without family there, this is sort of it. Why did I cry when the flight attendant at Boston said 'for those of you from the Boston area, welcome home'? Even though that was just my layover? S and I still talk as if we were elementary school BFFs. I still feel so comfortable around her and her family. I love her son, I miss him so much already, I just want to hold him as he wiggles around. And I want to play with her dog. And I'm usually scared of dogs.

It's nice to be around people who've known you for a long time and share a certain set of memories and references with you. It's also nice to be around people who have the same vocabulary and scale as you. Like no upstate NY is not the fucking Hudson Valley and it's not Buffalo either (that's Western NY). No 40 degree is not cold. And yes 80 is sweltering and 90 should be illegal. I like being around grocery stores that aren't chains and local-branded soda and beer and ice cream. I like chains like Grand Union, Kinney's, and Stewart's. The shades of green in the trees and blue in the water are the most beautiful colors in the world. I just love this area so much. I'm not even kidding when I say I want to have property up there which is fucking WILD given I don't even have property HERE. L M A O, self.

I'll go up again for Carnival. I have to start acknowledging my November trip (hadfakfaksfa) and then after that, we'll start planning for February. Excellent, excellent. Keep looking forward to things, keep looking on.

may 19 m thought of very cute leggings, leg warmers n new aesthetic more , so now am want to change my room up and go for my pink idea ! i always felt bad for wanting it to be all pink ebcause it doesnt necessarily align w my feng shui but i wa s like , “ let me stop confinin myself “ , so im plan 2 get cute pink posters (n design them,) more ffske folliage, hanging plants , lace curtains/ transparent , pink rug and wayyy more plushie !!!

fri may 20 i wok up too late 2 get ready n missed bus so instead of adking relativ who im not fond of,,, I WALK 3 KM!!!! 3000 m in 40 minute to my school n cross highway ^_^ it acc big feat for me bc ive never cross highway bflre when walking n also NEVER have walk that much in ine moring. i was determine to get to school and i did !! did NOT MISS SCHOOL !!! 😎

i brin canvas n wallet cos today i want handed in. y canvas n buy the flare legging ! school was good n i did really well in math w anawritjng question and understanding material :3 i so happy abt that bc usually i feel like i am strugglin behind , but my misophonia kept kicking in ),:

art class went bot so well ): ,, i was finishing my sides and the sand when I accidentally tip uellow paint all over my cabvas 😭😭 theguy who sat across fron me was kind and saved my canvas from fultl flipping over , dude had great reflexes but there was a big fat blob of yellow pajt on floor witb some splatters . it got over my canvas so i had scrapped off w cardboard n then scrapped the paint w the cardboard off the ground and back jnto fhe conrainer, and then i use dawn soap, brown paper towel and sponge to scrub dub dub, and then u couldnt even tell it was there . i am proud for cleaning ip it sow ell but i think mybe god was telling me tht i had to do one kr more finishing touches, sooo i went to work w canvas and home w it, and also saw dat my framw wasnt black emigubso i brough it home too to paint it more black.

i bough flare legging tho, got free agua at satrbuck bc i forgo watnottle, had starbuck popcorn (yumyum i luv popcorn !) and it wa great!!! 🍿💛

i did 3 stock boxes in 30 min!!! thrts 10 mins for wach unpacking, and then i hung then up n tagged them all by myself ^w^ i was so proud tht i got it done (securi tagging in 57 min, total time took for 3 boxes is 1 hr 48)

my ocd was kicking in ahain with the number of aecurity tags i had and it was a little difficult but i trudge through it n tried to not breakdown over it n so i didnt !! i also met new coworker today, her name angelina 😇

i was so happy tht i did it i felt unsfoppable, n i got praises for my pretty painting from wmployees when i walk into shops n also praises from my coworker s n pll were impressed that i did stock so quicj so i very proud ^⏝^ i put clothes out on sales floor too but at end of shift i went back to get my canvas cos i forgo x_x

when home came my ankle pain rlly kcike din bc it was sore during my shift n still hurts as i weite this ))): hopefully i sleep it off n it go away . i didn do much homeworks until 7 ish but i still trusges through my sampling math homework and painted my frame black and fixed my painting yellow mistake n then got ready for bed 💤💤 i beush my cat today too n he got lots fur, i saw him climb up a carpet n it remind me of spiderman !! he gwtting realt confident n it make me happy

i felt little meh abt wanting to self care but i pushed myself to do so ! 😼 so i lotion my sof skin, gargle w mourhwash, brush teef brush hair n then got into bed w comfy comforter ! i also went on walk w sister n went barefoot, got feet dirty but i wash it before bed, n also walk in grass which is theuropedic !

There are two differences that I can see between Emslie and Tobin right now.

Tobin is a free agent in that she's not currently contracted to any club, but in the NWSL she can't sign for a club other than Louisville until Louisville either trades her rights or January 1 hits and she becomes an NWSL free agent.

Emslie is under contract with Everton until June 30 at which point she becomes a free agent unless she signs with another club. So for her to join Angel City before July 1, Everton will need to terminate her contract (which will likely be a formality that wouldn't even need to be announced as their season is already over and they already said she will be leaving). And right now the only NWSL club she can sign with is Angel City since Angel City hold her rights. Emslie also will not become eligible for NWSL free agency on January 1 so Angel City will continue to hold her rights if she doesn't sign unless they waive or trade her rights.

But I'm not certain my theory is correct. I'm pretty sure ADK joined Houston Dash by way of that weird trade from North Carolina Courage last summer outside of a transfer window. She had been playing with Man City so she was not a free agent. And it was said that she could join because her rights were already with an NWSL team. So my theory only works if the deal from Man City to North Carolina Courage happened during a transfer window but it wasn't announced because ADK was refusing to sign a new contract with North Carolina Courage. The whole thing was weird and there's a lot that wasn't announced, so maybe.

ADK / SD totally cheated the rules by calling it a "loan" when obviously NC had already agreed to a trade with SD.. another bullshit thing SD got away with.

But yeah you're right.. basically Emslie can't sign anywhere until her rights are terminated, and she can only sign with Angel City in NWSL. Tobin can sign anywhere at any moment, but only LV in NWSL until Jan. 1st, until her rights are moved.

Ladrien June Day 27: Protect You

He saw her go down, but there was literally no way he could’ve gotten to her in time to prevent it.

That didn’t stop him from hating himself as he gently laid Ladybug’s frail body on his bed. She was breathing, but he swore he could hear her struggling for each breath. He was almost relieved when his transformation wore off, and he couldn’t hear the thin rattle in her chest anymore.

“That was a bad hit. You okay, kid?” Plagg asked.

“I’m not the one who got hit,” Adrien said, blinking back tears. Ladybug’s suit was red, which helped to hide the blood. But he knew there was a lot of it.

He got half a wheel of Camembert for Plagg and some towels from the bathroom for Ladybug. He pressed them to her chest, hoping to stop the bleeding, and her eyes fluttered open at the touch.

“Adrien?” she whispered, mask crinkling as her eyebrows drew together.

“It’s okay. We’re safe here,” Adrien said, trying to sound calm. A hospital would’ve been a better bet, but that would’ve meant her identity was at risk. Ladybug, he knew, wouldn’t want that until it was absolutely necessary.

“What -” Ladybug looked around his room, struggling to understand.

Adrien could’ve lied. He could’ve told her that he’d been in the watching crowd, and that Chat had tasked him with getting her somewhat safe. Or he could’ve said that Chat had brought her here, left her and gone back to fighting.

But Adrien was tired and scared, and he’d just watched the love of his life nearly die, and he just couldn’t lie to her again.

“I brought you here, Bugaboo. You took a hard hit.”

He watched the confusion melt away and understanding flash across her face. Her blue eyes went very wide and she stared at him like she’d never seen him before. Adrien tried to smile, but suspected it was coming through as more of a grimace.

“I’m sorry. I panicked. My only thought was protecting you,” he admitted, hunching his shoulders. “My house was closest.” He couldn’t look her in the face.

Ladybug was quiet for a long time. Then she reached out and shakily laid her hand over his. Adrien stared at their hands, then slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers. Even though she must’ve been in pain, she smiled at him.

“It’s okay, mon minou,” she breathed.

It felt like something shattered in his chest when she called him ‘my kitty’. Adrien couldn’t stop the tears from welling up and sliding down his cheeks. Ladybug’s grip tightened painfully on his hand.

“I should be comforting you. You’re the one bleeding,” Adrien said finally, wiping at his face with his sleeve.

“I’ve had worse,” Ladybug said with a faint shake of her head. Then she sucked in a sharp breath and winced.

“Don’t move,” Adrien said quickly.

“I have to move. I have to help you.”

“No. You’re gonna stay here. I’ll bring the akumatized object to you,” he told her when she looked like she wanted to argue. “I’ll break it and help you catch the akuma. Then you can cast your miraculous cure.”

Ladybug pursed her lips, obviously not pleased. “You won’t get hurt, right? You’ll be careful?”

“I promise,” Adrien said. He dared to lift her hand and kiss the back of it, and was pleased to see her blush.

“Okay. I’ll cast Lucky Charm for you. Maybe it’ll help. My yo-yo -”

He fetched her yo-yo from where it had fallen to the carpet during their rushed entry into the room. He had to wrap his own hands around Ladybug’s to help her throw it into the air, and he was the one who caught the red, black-spotted hammer that fell.

“Do you know what to do with that?” Ladybug adked.

Adrien hefted the hammer and smiled. “I can think of a few things, My Lady.”

“Okay. Good luck, Chaton.”

“I’ll be back before your transformation runs out,” he told her. Not because he was worried about her identity, but because he thought that being transformed might be the only thing keeping her conscious right now.

“I trust you,” she said, looking right at him. Like she meant it. Adrien would die before he broke that trust.

“Plagg, claws out!” he shouted, punching the air. Green light swirled around him. Ladybug stared at him in wonder; he wished he had time to enjoy it. He kept his eyes on her even as he leaped out the window, until he couldn’t see her anymore. Then he faced forward with a renewed fire in his heart.

That akuma was going to pay.

Trials of Mana

Maybe not the highest profile remake Square-Enix have put out in recent memory, but one that was pretty exciting for me. I played a fan translation of the Super Famicom original some 20 years ago, so while it's not particularly fresh in my head, there's just enough there to enjoy some infrequent little pangs of nostalgia. The move to 3D has made for some welcome changes to to combat - jumping adds a vertical element to combat that wasn't present before, and enemy specials being clearly telegraphed and avoidable puts a little more control in your hands. There's still a good amount of 16 bit jank though - combo timing feels unreliable, the camera's often a pain, there's plenty of questionable hit detection, and you definitely wouldn't want to leave your fate solely in the hands of your party's AI. Willing to put most of this aside, what actually mattered more to me was that it still had the kind of playful, breezy nature, it looks and plays nicely, and that it progresses at a nice clip. Party selection will change the way you fight moment-to-moment, but only provides minor and very brief deviance from the main storyline, most of which is the kind of schlocky cartoon villainy that will have you looking for a skip button before it would illicit any kind of emotional response. But you know what? Overall, I still enjoyed it a lot.

So while it may not be revolutionising the action RPG, what it does show is that Square-Enix is capable of acknowledging their history of previously untranslated works, and that they also now have a pretty good template for getting a B-tier remake of such titles out in a reasonable timeframe. Sayonara Wild Hearts

As a one-liner found on the back of the box, 'A pop album video game' is about as on-the-nose as it gets. The old "it's not for everyone" adage is definitely applicable, and its defiance of traditional video game metrics is not in any way subtle. How sophisticated is the gameplay? Not particularly. How long is it? Not very. But how does it make you feel? Now you're talking. It presents a simple but deeply relatable story of a broken heart, and leads from there with a catchy tune into a fast and colourful onslaught of new ideas, perspectives, and concepts. That is to say: it has the potential to make you feel all kinds of things. 

One especially celebratory note was how well the game is structured to fit into the album structure it boasts about. Stages flow quickly into one another, and while shorter, more compounding numbers are often about introducing new ideas and themes, moving on to the next is a few simple button presses and a brief, well-hidden loading window away. Inevitably there are more standout stages, those that feel like the hit singles; the longer, verse-chorus-verse type joints that grant the space for more fleshed out visual story telling, and that smartly synchronise their percussive hits, soaring vocals and the like to appropriate beats of play. A lot of the gameplay can easily (and cynically) be reduced to "it's an endless runner", but to liken this to a cheap re-skin of a confirmed hit-maker is to wilfully dismiss so much of what it does better and so much beside. You can play it on damn near everything, and for the time it takes, it's well worth doing. 

Twinkle Star Sprites

I've meant to play this countless times before. I've almost certainly passed it by while strolling through arcades, the Saturn version has never been hoovered up into my collection, and the PS2 collection this particular version belongs to - ADK Damashii - is no longer a cheap addition to anyone's library. The digital version of it for PS4 however was however recently on sale at a point that saw me receive change from a fiver. David Dickinson would be proud.

Having now credit-fed my way through the game's brief arcade mode, there's no doubt in my mind that the nuance of its systems are going to be glossed over in this rather ham-fisted appraisal. At least at face value, there's plenty of character and charm to appreciate in its colourful and cutesy style. As a two-player, vertically split-screen title, its a pretty clean break from a lot of a shooter's typical characteristics - rather than 6(ish) stages of hell, its a series of one on one battles - and all the better suited to 2 players for it. As enemy waves come at you, taking them out in chains can generate attacks to the other player; however if these attacks are too small then it's entirely possible they'll be killed off again, and an even bigger attack will come straight back at you. Think of a bit like competitive Tetris, but with shooting rather than puzzling. It's a neat and curious little game, that's likely best experienced properly, with a friend on the other side of the sofa to hurl abuse at. 

Blasphemous

Let's get the lazy-but-effective description out of the way: it's a 2D MetroidVania Souls-like. You've got "that" type of map, definitely-not-bonfires and definitely-not-Estus Flasks. You are encouraged to return to your body upon death, the combat system is very reliant on parries and dodge-rolls, and there's even a dedicated "lore" button to use on every item you pick up. 

While this likely sounds dismissive, it's more about addressing the elephant in the room. To give some context, these are both types of games that I love, and the end product here has done a pretty good job of bringing them together. The exploration is pleasantly open - gatekeeping is typically done less by specific items and abilities, and more by just which areas you're brave enough to poke your head into. It's a little bit of a shame that most of the new abilities have to be switched out for others rather than adding to a core arsenal of moves, but at the same time its base setup gives you plenty of ways to deal with any number of combat scenarios. This is of course best demonstrated by the boss encounters, which are wonderful affairs - big, gruesome, thoughtful variations on approaches to combat, which drop in at a nice pace to keep you from ever getting too cocky. The theming in general is wonderful, and the name is certainly appropriate - there's a lot of deep catholic inspiration in its gorgeous backdrops and environments, but then layered on top are some chilling elements of religious iconography, along with a cast of disturbing devotees and martyrs to sufficiently unsettle you. It's arguably a small intersection of the gaming population that it'll appeal to, but if you're in there, it's a real treat.

Death Come True

The first thing you see upon starting is the game's central character breaking right through the fourth wall to tell you directly not to stream the game or to share anything that might spoil the story. The first rule of Death Come True, and so on. I consider myself fairly well versed in such etiquette, so to then have the screenshot function entirely disabled for the whole game felt a little like being given a slap on the wrists for a crime I had no intention of committing. I don't envy the team trying to market it, that's for sure. 

The reasoning behind this is clear at least - it's a game that is in total service of its plot. Consider a mash-up of a 'Choose your own adventure' book and a series of full-motion videos, and you're mostly there. Unless you were to walk away from the controller or perhaps fall asleep, there seems very little chance that your play time will deviate from the 3 hour estimate - which will certainly put some people off, but is understandable given the production values, and personally, quite welcome in the first place. In terms of replay value, there are branching paths that a single route will obviously skip: as an example of this, in looking up a screenshot to use in lieu of taking my own, I found a promotional image of the central cast, only to not recognise one of them at all. One thing that such a short run-time does ensure though, is that minute-for-minute, there's plenty of action; without wanting to speak about the story itself (rather than in fear of reprise for doing so, I might add), it kicks off with plenty of intrigue, shortly thereafter switching to full-on action, and then strikes a pretty fine balancing act between the two for its run time. It doesn't get quite as deep or as complex as I would've hoped given the team's pedigree, but I do like it, and think it'd actually be a pretty fun title to play with folks who normally don't concern themselves with games. By the same token, it's probably not for the 'hardcore' types looking for something to string out over dozens of hours. 

Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight 

After the generous main course that was Persona 5 Royal, I figured that I'd follow up with dessert. I did however wait until a weekend where I knew my girlfriend would be away, so as not to trigger any unpleasant flashbacks to looped battle themes, and the chirpy, indecipherable voices of Japanese schoolkids that made it so painful to endure as a non-gaming cohabitant.  

Immediately, it's clear that very little has changed since Persona 4's take on the rhythm action genre. The core game, while still functional and fairly enjoyable, hasn't changed a lick. Perhaps the most notable improvement to the package as a whole is in scaling back on a dedicated story mode, and instead just having a series of uninspired but far less time-consuming set of social link scenes that pad things out. The biggest flaw is repeated wholesale though, in that trying to stretch out noteworthy tracks from a single game's playlist into a dedicated music game leads to repetition - and there is a much less prolific gathering of artists involved in remixes this time. I'd be willing to wager that it's a very similar story once again with Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, but I'm not about to ruin a perfectly good dinner to start with the sweet just to find out, if you'll excuse a second outing of the metaphor. Still, again compare these to Theatrhythm though - where Square-Enix plundered the Final Fantasy series in its entirety, along with spin-offs and other standalone titles to put together a library of music worthy for the one single game. Cobble the tunes from Personas 3-5 together into one game, and you're still coming up very short by comparison.

September 12: Monty/Raven, Computer

Monty/Raven (well, more Monty & Raven really), Modern/College AU, ~700 words

The prompt was connected to the fic originally--mostly in that, when I wrote it in my head before going to sleep a few nights ago, it was primarily a conversation between them about a computer game Monty was coding. But from what little I remember of those sleep-addled thoughts, it was mostly nonsense, so, here’s this instead.

Raven doesn't know him but she's seen him around: at lunch in the cafeteria, walking across the quad, once or twice in the hallways of the squat Computer Science building, mostly basement, on the far south side of campus. But mostly she recognizes him from the library, because his favorite study spot is at the same large table on the second floor, between the stacks, next to the windows, that she has long staked out as her own. He's there almost every time she shows up, but it's fine. The table is more than big enough for two.

The boy is at his usual spot today: the corner seat, closest to the strip of carpet that winds its way down the hall. He has his laptop open, a stack of closed books at his elbow. He doesn't look up when she approaches, and she doesn't offer a greeting, which is not unusual: they've been studying together all semester and have never spoken to each other once. She pulls out the chair across from and diagonally to the left of his and starts unpacking her bag.

Today, unlike most days, the one bit of unusual color to the fast-fading late-autumn afternoon, the boy is wearing glasses. She's never seen him wear glasses before. There's something odd and not quite right about them.

She suspects the glasses don't actually contain any glass.

As she powers up her laptop and starts arranging her notebooks and highlighters around her, the boy reaches up to scratch the side of his nose, and as he does, he pokes his finger right through where the lens of his glasses should be. Raven, despite herself, stifles a laugh, hiding a sudden grin behind her hand.

She's sure the boy doesn't hear her, but perhaps he senses her eyes on him, because he looks up and meets her gaze, steady and surprisingly humorless. Then he raises his eyebrows until they disappear into his hair.

Raven gestures, a vague twitch of her fingers. "Think you forgot something?" She's still smiling, and trying not to smile, her hand still blocking her mouth.

The boy hesitates, considers, and then says, as if this idea were equal parts obvious and bright, "Yes! To clean my glasses!" He takes them off and moves to wipe the lenses down with his shirt, then stops, and frowns. "Ah—forgot the lenses too."

At that, his expression breaks, and he smiles, a genuine smile, and Raven feels safe enough to drop her arms down to the table, where she crosses them on top of themselves and then leans in. "Why are you wearing those stupid things?"

The boy folds the glasses closed and sets them next to his books. "I don't know," he shrugs. "My roommate gave them to me. He said they were to make me look smarter. I told him I already look smart and not to insult me."

"And then you wore them anyway," Raven finishes.

He shrugs again. "They're a conversation starter."

"True. You have officially started a conversation." She nods once, decisive, then tilts her head and adds, "I'm Raven."

"Monty. I've seen you around."

"Yeah, because you stole my study table."

He rolls his eyes. "I've been studying here since the first day of class."

"Me too. The first day of class last year."

He must be a freshman, she thinks, as he gives an exaggerated sigh, a reluctant concession. A weird freshman with a weird roommate. Probably taking CompSci 101. On the back of his laptop, a campaign sticker from a local race; a cluster of trees that say ADK beneath them; a cartoon spaceship; the name of a band Raven has never heard of. Or she thinks, probably, it is a band.

Not much to go on. But a start. 

"So, what, are you going to challenge me to a duel for the table?" Monty asks. "Because I think it's a bit late for that."

"There is no time limit on duels," Raven answers, quick and matter-of-fact, and with as serious an expression as she can manage. "But I don't mind you sticking around, for now."
