WritingMonth wants to serve a similar purpose as NaNoWriMo but without the baggage.

I have tried Pacemaker.Press, Mywriteclub, and 4thewords. All of them are good, depending on what you're looking for in terms of functionality.

Personally, 4thewords is my goto, and I'll be purchasing their lifetime membership next year, when my currently accrued membership time expires, but I still maintain free accounts on Pacemaker and Mywriteclub.

I'd also like to mention that WritingMonth.Org is in the process of being built, specifically for people looking for somewhere other than Nanowrimo as well. The developer hopes to have the website coded and functioning by the end of September 2024, so it's another one worth keeping an eye on.

Personally I like the fact you have separate categories for goal achievements.

I haven't joined a NaNo since 2017 (mainly because health, 50k a month is just too much), but I do look forward to deleting my NaNo account and to check WritingMonth out!

So... apparently the NaNoWriMo organization has been gutted and the people at the top now are fully focused on Getting That AI Money.

I have no reason to say this other than Vibes™️ and the way that every other org who has pivoted to AI has behaved but I wouldn't trust anything shared with or stored on their servers not to be scraped for training LLMs. That includes pasting stuff into the site to verify your word count, if that's still a thing. (I haven't done Nano since 2015).

Also of note:

Age gating has been implemented. If you haven't added your date of birth to your profile or if you're under 18, it's supposed to lock you out of local region pages and the forums. ... It's worth noting that the privacy policy on the webpage doesn't specify how that data is stored and may not be GDPR compliant.

...

Camp events are being run solely by sponsors. Events for LGBTQIA+, disabled writers, and writers of color no longer appear to be a thing at NaNo.

Just... go read the whole thing. It's not that long. Ugh.

Motivational Monday

Hey guys!

Sorry that my motivational post went up a little later than expected, so I thought I'd post it now. Better late than never. I had a lot on my plate with it being day 2 of #nanowrimo as well as some personal stuff in my life.

Also, I decided to participate in a couple writing challenges this year to help keep me motivated and on track for the writing month. I am participating in the #NaNoLifeChallenge as well as the #NaNoOrNot21 challenge on IG and the #TheMerryWriter hashtag game over on Twitter. So I will be posting more frequently during this month, then hopefully go back to my regular posting schedule next month.

Day two of #NaNoWriMo and I’ve finished off another 2,477 words. I’m feeling good about my pace. It doesn’t feel overly difficult, probably because I’m enjoying the storyline. 🖤 As I’m writing I’m finding myself changing facts on the fly without bothering how they contradict earlier passages. Essentially I’m discovering what’s happening and who these people are as I go. I’ll have a lot of editing later down the line, but so far the structure feels solid enough that I’m hopeful. Then again, that’s a future thought, so pushing that back. 🖤 For the moment, it’s just nice to be able get a bit ahead of the game at this early stage, since I know I’ll have some challenging weeks coming up. 🖤 Just for the fun of it, I made a NaNo page in my bullet journal to track my progress. AI is not going to take publishing contracts away from anyone. Publishers don't want AI stories because they're terrible.

Some writers (Nate Silver, apparently) use AI for parts of their books, but to do that you need to have the kind of skills that you will not develop while depending on AI to write for you. (And it doesn't absolve you of the ethical issues.)

Losing the community around NaNoWriMo is a big blow, but people are trying to create new communities. I'd suggest checking out #WritingMonth on BlueSky, or look around writing communities to see what people are coming up with.

So, I'm officially a competitor in this November's NaNoWriMo:) The story: Mount Mythos A diesel-punk adventure about climbing an impossibly tall and uncharted mountain in search of the legendary "Celestial Gardens" at the top.
