Check their feed as Mandel celebrates Ansel Adams February 18, 19 and 20, 2022 On the occasion of Ansel Adams' birthday (February 20) the American author Mike Mandel will celebrate the great photographer. From February 18 to 20 Mandel will publish contents about his big research about Adams' work and his Zone System, a method to control exposure of the negative in order to obtain a full range of tonality in the photographic print from the deepest black of Zone 0 to the brightest highlight in Zone 10. Piece of wisdom: „... if the subject brightness range (SBR) is greater than nine stops between the required Zone I and Zone IX, we underexpose by one stop less than the difference, eg if the SBR is 11 stops, we have a difference of 2 stops from 9 and therefore underexpose by 1 stop from the normally correct zone V setting. However, we pre-flash through a diffuser at zone I, ie we take a Reading through the diffuser with the meter in the same direction as the camera lens, and we adjust it to 4 stops less to reach Zone I. This is the flash exposure we give through the cameramen’s, covered now by the diffuser. The actual image with exposure is double exposed on to the same frame with a completely different exposure setting as dictated by the meter reading without the diffuser. A study in tone, while i swing the day away…. The fascinating thing about digital, is that it allows me to separate each color channel and massage it. @AnselAdams may have loved this level of control with his #ZoneSystem. But just makes it too damn easy now a days. I guess like #AutoTune. There is no #SpotMetering and giving it to a printer to pull their hair out to follow your @avedonfoundation type marked contact sheets.

Go Take A Walk

We pseudo-sedentary creative types sometimes forget how important our physical health is to keeping us in a creative frame of mind. We hunker down behind the tools we use to build our world and bridge the gaps and cracks we find there and use them as either a protective shield or battering ram to get our point across. This short article is a case in point.

As we creative types struggle with our personal demons or exorcise those we recognize or fantasize about in society we can easily fall into disrepair when it comes to our health. Now this can result from a few too many midnight raids on a cold steel repository of questionable sustenance or over indulgence at lavish parties thrown in our honor for what we gift to the world. Sure, I know, we've all been there. Right?

So I say to you go take a walk. Take it alone take it often and take it at a moment of the day that affords you time to tune not only your body but your mind. Some of the best moments of inspiration can bubble to the surface when you get oxygen rich blood pumping through you like it's supposed to.

We have an epidemic in our world of over weight and under fit practicing and potential creatives in our world. Bridging that gap and fighting those demons takes more than fantasy. It takes creating healthy actions and habits to replace the bad ones we so often gravitate towards. Do the world a favor and set your sights on sticking around for awhile. Go take a walk.
