“And finally on drums,” Buck doesn’t like turning his back to his audience, and he doesn’t do that here. But he does twist in place to look back at Tommy on the drum riser, “Tommy Kinard!”

If Buck’s being honest, he was expecting something stupid. For Tommy to just go off with those damn blast beats he’s so fond of. Buck’s expecting more of what he heard during sound check, expecting a sample of what Tommy usually plays on stage. He doesn’t get that. It’s fast, certainly faster than what Lucy would have done, but Tommy sticks mostly to the toms. A snappy, precise drum solo that he ends with a crash of a cymbal.

Tommy looks happy. Whenever Buck’s glanced back at him, he’s been smiling and excited. The camera is zoomed in on him. His neck is shiny with sweat. He keeps the beat one handed and waves with the other.

“Thank you all so much for being here tonight,” Buck says.

As he starts talking again, camera cuts away from Tommy, and suddenly it’s Buck’s own red sweaty face on the jumbotron. Buck looks away, looks back out at the crowd.

“We’ve got a couple more songs here for you,” Buck continues, “I’d love you to clap for me.”

He’s timed it perfectly. The click begins, and Buck raises his hands to clap on time with it. He can see Eddie next to him clapping as well. The crowd joins… mostly on beat.
