OOC: Update – Tad on Main!

Today, I’ve completed the final steps to do something I hadn’t honestly planned on doing – I’ve made Tad my Main in FFXIV!

This is a big deal to me as it’s a huge change for my account, but will not be much of a change here as Tad has always popped up now and then on this blog. Spot of Mummery has always been a slightly multi-muse blog, and this just means Tad’ll probably show up more often since I’ll be playing him as my Main (more on this in a sec).

Just want to stress - this won't change Amon content as he has never been my Main! I just might post additional Tad content going forward. XD

Refresher – Who is Tad Kouris?

In the Spot of Mummery storyline, Tad is Amon’s younger cousin. Also an Allagan, he chose an opposing path, siding with the Resistance to fight against the Empire. However, part of his personal mission has always been to try and rescue his cousin (kicking and screaming if he had to) from the mess Amon had made of his life.

It was only after the fall of the Empire that Tad discovered he was the WoL for that timeframe. He’s still not really sure what that means (there is no WoL noob handbook), and he struggles with the revelations this has brought to him.

He was sent by the surviving Allagan Princess Salina into the future to ensure that Uni and Doga were able to carry out their mission when the Crystal Tower rose from the earth again, and that Xande would be put to rest for good. However, Tad’s ulterior secret motive was still to save his cousin, Amon.

(Spoilers: He succeeded, and that’s part of how Amon came to live in present day Eorzea!)

What’s the Deal With Tad Becoming “Main”?

This could get long, so I’ve put it under a cut!

So why is Tad becoming Main such a big deal?

In the past, some folks who were surprised to learn that I don’t consider Amon my Main FFXIV character. He’s my main in terms of RP and interaction, but he was not the first character I ever rolled.

My Main has a history that reaches back to shortly after ARR launched in 2013. Going on almost 12 years of playing this character, I’ve amassed the most in terms of mounts, minions, music, cards, jobs leveled, etc. on this character. Basically, I can’t give up my Main because my history as a FFXIV player is tied up in this particular character slot.

But I’ve never really got a feel for what I wanted to do with Main. This character has gone through more name changes and Fantasias than I care to admit (thank goodness for free Fantasias!). I’ve gone back and forth between trying to make Main an RP character and just leaving Main as the figurehead character for my gaming blog and socials.

I just know every time I make Main a generic “me-type” character, I get bored. I played Amon a whole lot this past weekend, unlocking things I haven’t done yet on Main, and it really struck home how much I enjoy playing content on one of my RP characters vs. just my generic Main. It's just the character vibe that changes the whole experience (do you feel that way, too?).

So, all that being said, I sorted my list of RP characters over this past weekend, and decided I would once again transform Main into one of my actual story-based OCs.

Why not Amon, you might ask! Good question.

Basically, there are so many things I’ve either purchased or unlocked for Amon that’s specific to him – emotes, mounts, adventure plates, etc. – it would be too costly and time consuming to replicate that. Also, he has folks on his friends list that I don’t want to lose (or confuse - lol), his Tea and Tomes shop apartment, and his Secret Lab FC room.

Tad, on the other hand, was a prime option because aside form maybe the Pizza emote, there’s almost nothing on that alt character that I don’t have on my Main. So, after much deliberation, I did a bunch of name changes and OC shifting on my account this past weekend. (Free fantasias be blessed!)

As of today, Tad has taken up the mantle of my Main character slot, and I’m both excited and a little unsure how this is going to pan out. I hope it will be fun!

And if you’ve read this far, let me ask: Am I the only one with character identity issues like this?

(I told Scylla-mun that she can smite me should I wibble-wobble and try to change Main back to a generic character in the future - lol!)

Alright, folks, it took some time, but there we have it, X-Men theme! I also unpinned my masterlist for now, since I'm planning to change that aesthetic as well.

For some time, I've been also thinking about getting into writing again, but for that I still need some more time. I'd like to write some bigger series, and for this I need to plan everything through. But, maybe before that, I'd post a drabble or one shot to see how you guys would react!!!

A lost kryptonian founded.

Superman was just taking a break out of the Fortress of solitude after a couple of training to defend himself against kryptonite in case of another fight against Lethor.

Clark watched the Icy landscape in silence. It was quiet as the sky was dark, with only the tiny sound of a dangerously slow beating of a drum or a heart right underneath the ice..

Clark immediately went into Superman mode, driving right into the very glacier of frozen ice, only to nearly crash into a body in some large tunnel hole large enough to fit an adult.

It was a boy, a preteen at most curled up in a ball hugging himself with black and white hair that had a frost covered half of a crown on his head, eyes closed as If asleep with frozen tears stuck to his face like icicles, wearing a kryptonian suit with the initials rip on his chest.

Superman didn't think much or twice as he grabbed the boy carefully, diving out the hole he made from the Icy grounds.

The boy was ice cold, much colder then space itself if it weren't for the icy breath.

He dove back to the Fortress of Solitude in a tiny bit of panic, not to think at all as the Fortress's voice of Lara spoke out with a hologram.

"DNA Recognition, distant cousin once removed, Emergency Defense security disarmed."

Her eyes flickered a bit as if a message was being played, her face look a bit worried and hopeful.

"Oh, child of my beloved brother, Jac-al, if you have survived long enough under the eccentric of my brother and found the Fortress of Solitude. I hope you that you didn't inherit my brother eccentric antic to malfunction everything he built without forgetting to check if they are faulty."

Yeah okay so like I said in the tags of the last post I’m rising from my tumblr grave to say that the ban on TikTok is symptomatic of a MUCH larger and more terrifying problem. Because yes, on its surface it’s silly dances and asmr and cooking videos and whatever, but in truth and at its core, TikTok single-handedly revolutionized the way 170 million Americans communicated with each other AND the rest of the world. Non-Americans love to point out how America-centric Americans are, but fail to realize that we are purposefully raised in an isolated, insulated environment where we are told from basically day 1 that America Is The Best and not to even bother taking a look around because it’s all downhill from outside of here. TikTok has, for MANY Americans, single-handedly destroyed that notion and allowed them (us!!) to broaden our world-view and realize that actually, things are better in other countries, and it did so in a kind, empathetic, and compassionate way.

And yeah most people wake up to the truth of that on their own as they get older, but holy shit!! The VAST majority of the Americans on TikTok are millennials and gen z (and even some older gen alpha)!! People who are becoming disillusioned with “The American Dream” (said with the HEAVIEST sarcasm) while they’re still school-aged or are just entering young-adulthood!! People who are entering - or TRYING to enter - the American workforce who suddenly have an unfiltered window into non-American lives and are wondering why tf we’re struggling and penny-pinching and toeing the line of poverty while our rich elected officials sit around and fight and argue over everything that actually matters to the citizens they supposedly represent and get richer all the while. THAT is why they’re banning the app, and that fact alone should terrify every single American citizen.

Not to mention the precedent it sets for other social media platforms!! You think some nebulous, unproven, and unfounded “threat to national security” will stop with TikTok?? They’ve already censored Adult Material on tumblr, who’s gonna stop them from coming back and doing it again or getting rid of it altogether for the exact same reason? It’s a blatant act of censorship and a direct attack on the American first amendment right to free speech.

NOTHING radicalized me the way tiktok did. I watched people in my life who were STAUNCH Trump supporters in 2016 AND 2020 wake up to the truth and vote blue for the first time in their lives BECAUSE OF TIKTOK, and did so with al the nuanced understanding that even Democrats are severely failing this country, but are at least better than the alternative. That level of awareness and presence in the average US citizen scares American politicians.

The fact that the vast majority of them - including the ones loudly opposing the ban!! - bought stock in Meta BEFORE the ban was legalized/upheld by the Supreme Court?? That Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk were legally allowed to lobby congress to ban TikTok when BOTH stood to DIRECTLY financially gain from their biggest competitor being banned in the US and are guilty of unethically gathering data and selling it to MULTIPLE third parties?? The fact that Trump is now teasing that he may or may not intervene to save TikTok when he was the one who talked about banning it in the first place AND ALSO OWNS HIS OWN COMPETING SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM??

It’s the burning of Alexandria. It’s the loss of a significant chunk of culture. It’s the sharp and sudden loss of contact with the rest of the world for more than half of all American citizens. It’s the loss of $240 BILLION dollars in the GDP when the country is already TRILLIONS of dollars in debt. And on an individualistic level, it’s the loss of millions of small businesses and primary income streams for so many individuals and families who found their primary audience on TikTok. Is the app perfect? HELL no. Are there significant changes needed to make it a safe environment for all users? ABSOLUTELY. But that can also be said of ANY social media platform. TikTok openly fostered connection and communication and creativity and compassion that is completely unique to that platform! It made so many people - myself included!! - feel less alone. I get the feeling I know what the general consensus is about TikTok on this site, but the ban on this app should scare the shit out of everyone.
