It's the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act; that was hard fought for by disabled activists. #ADA30 ♿✊⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #TheFutureIsAccessible #DisabilityPrideMonth⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ In the same way you can love and criticize something at once, you can honor/celebrate something and criticize its faults at once as well.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ It has been 30 YEARS but we have yet to see disability access as a true norm, as a social and structural priority, as an innate part of the collective consciousness. I’m a tad late acknowledging the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We’ve been working on applying universal design principles throughout the museum with the archives focusing on descriptive text for digital images in our digital archive (https://digitalarchives.clevelandart.org/digital/). I began with our collection of renderings by the goldsmith John Paul Miller, whose work is based on amorphous shapes in nature. I hope that I at least succeed in conveying the general appearance of these beautiful pieces for screen readers. There are many more image collections to tackle and I look forward to more training on descriptive techniques!

Summer presentations during COVID19

As the COVID19 pandemic is ongoing Crip Video Productions continues to operate well online. On July 21 2020 Crip Video Productions did another video call presentation on disability. We had more of the cast members of “Crips Not Creeps” and “A Stroke Of Endurance” presenting, including a mix of disabled and non-disabled performers.  A lot of the presentation was focused on Cerebral Palsy, as well as visual impairment and another disability called dyspraxia. We talked about IEPs, disability terminology, social model vs medical model of disability, hypotonia, hypertonia, and AFOs. We talked about the 30th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act and the positive impact and rights the Americans With Disabilities Act provides to our cast and crew and all other disabled citizens. One person asked if everything was hard with a disability and we responded that disability is not suffering or tragedy. We discussed media and disability portrayal and noticed non verbal people were more rarely depicted. One person asked if “disability” should be used instead of “disorder”. One person asked if disabled kids tend to be overprotected. One woman asked us if we had advice for disabled kids and parents of disabled kids and even brought up the idea of Crip Video Productions talking to kids and parents as well as more college faulty in the Fall of 2020.  We got very positive feedback about the presentation after it ended.

On July 26th they celebrated this important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
