summary of recent adam foote podcast appearance — 100% canucks
john shannon and landon ferraro (!!) have started a new channel, and adam foote gave an interview in today’s episode! i’ve summarized it below. landon also talked a bit about the abby canucks playoff run at the beginning, so make sure to check it out!!
how he wants to coach/set his players up to succeed in games:
one of the draws to coaching for him was his experience playing under ken hitchcock and the strategies that hitchcock would create
when asked to describe his coaching style, he says that he wants to strategize based on who their opponent is/what their strengths are, and to be aware of how the opponent will try to beat them so that they have a plan to counter it
wants to have a plan that allows his players to have confidence that they’ll be able to succeed against the top players they’re going up against
“if we do our job, we’re gonna have success against any type of offence or any type of defence”
if the full 5/6-man unit (6 includes the goalie) is on the same page and they all stick with the process and believe in it, they’ll be able to stay in control “when things get harder”
going from assistant to head coach w the same team:
he thinks his relationships with the players is an advantage
he already knows the strengths/weaknesses of players, what makes them “go,” their personalities, etc. as well as things to continue working on with players
asked if it’s tough to go from working so closely with the defencemen to now “let go” of the defence (as kevin dean is taking over that role) so that he can oversee the team as a whole
acknowledges it’ll be difficult but he really likes who he’s hired as the new assistant coach (references the way he does the PK, as well as his calm demeanour)
building out his coaching staff/preparing for the role:
asked how he decided on his assistant coaches/if he knew all of them well — says he didn’t know dean as well as the others (had never met him), but loved the teams he’s been around/what he said.
says he already knew brett mclean and scott young (had played with young).
scott young is the “glue guy”
common advice he was given was to use his instinct, and utilize his relationships with players
on quinn hughes:
asked how he manages his relationship with quinn/the growing pressure on what the next two years will mean for quinn’s future — says his job is coaching the team, and quinn knows that.
they had a great conversation and the way foote looks at it, he’s going to keep teaching quinn everything he knows.
he and quinn are aware that foote is going to be coaching game by game rather than thinking of what happens in 2 years.
also mentions that if you’re going to win, it’s not just about one guy — though quinn is a big piece, as the captain.
quinn knows that foote will continue to be who he is (jokes if quinn extends a shift he shouldn’t have and foote snarls at him, it’s not for any reason other than that foote wants him to win).
he and quinn have a good relationship and likes that it’s open-book, and that quinn will come to him
“does [quinn] have a ceiling?” — says that he’d never think that players like him would have a ceiling.
what his message to the team is:
asked what his word/message to the team would be — wants to become a real close team that puts the work in together, hold each other accountable, and will feel like they’ll be unified as a team in a way that lets them adjust as a group if a game goes awry.
wants them, especially the leadership group, to be able to handle the inevitable hard moments without panic.
on elias pettersson (the forward):
asked “how concerned” he is about petey — mentions petey’s trip to michigan; says that petey is driven to put everything behind him and move forward. they had a great couple days together
they have been in communication, and foote is excited to see where he’s at in september.
what’s next?
asked what the next 2 months will look like for him: continue working with coaching staff as they nail down how they want to play, continue connecting/communicating with players

Adam Foote is the Canucks’ new head coach — why was he chosen; what might we expect?
ICYMI, adam foote has indeed been hired as the next head coach of the canucks. he was with the team as an assistant coach under tocchet prior to this, where he mainly focussed on the defensive side of things — working closely to help the defencemen develop their game, defensive systems, penalty kill, etc.
so, why was he hired? what should we expect the team to look like with him as head coach? what will this mean for players? some chatting from me below the cut:
why was foote the team’s choice for HC?
this is patrik allvin’s quote on the decision:
“Adam is a strong leader, good teacher and person who knows what it takes to build a great culture and winning attitude. His past experiences on the ice have translated nicely into a coaching style that fits our organization’s goals and vision. He has worked extremely hard the past few years, gaining our player's respect and trust for his strong communication and honest straight forward opinion. He knows this group better than anyone else we interviewed and has inside knowledge and understanding of what it will take to get us back to where we want to be. Adam brings structure, accountability, and a detailed oriented approach to his coaching, a process that will send a clear message to our group about the way we want to compete, practice, and play hockey.
my more concise impression of what this means is they feel that foote’s experience — largely as a player — allowed him to be a successful assistant coach with this particular team over the last couple of seasons, and thus they envision that it’ll also translate to success as a head coach. his systems/opinions of how to be successful fit the organization’s, and his familiarity with the players is an asset.
elliotte friedman mentioned today on Canucks Talk that he thinks foote’s relationship with the players played a very big role in the hiring, which is particularly helpful given how much the players went through last season.
then there’s the quinn hughes of it all: he loves foote, and this is a quinn hughes-approved hiring (per satiar shah). i don’t think they’d solely hire foote to try and keep quinn happy so that he re-signs; the best way to re-sign quinn is to have a successful team so i would assume they believe that he will be a coach who is conducive to the canucks being good again. nevertheless, we know they’ve respected his opinion on signings before, and quinn certainly loves adam foote. he’s not the only canuck to have voiced his approval for him either; tyler myers in particular has noted how helpful he has been.
what is foote’s coaching experience?
it’s limited, i’m not gonna lie lol. he has been a head coach once in his career, for the WHL team in kelowna — it did not go well, and he was fired, but in fairness he didn’t have a lot to work with on that team. he also spent several seasons as a defensive coach for the avs, and of course has been working as an assistant coach under tocchet for the last couple years.
this will be his first time being a head coach of an NHL team.
what should we expect the team to look like under him?
my assumption is that the canucks will play a fairly similar style under foote as they did under tocchet; that is not only a system that canucks’ management obviously approved — given how hard they tried to re-sign tocchet — but is the one that foote has had familiarity with recently, and as it’s his first time as HC i wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t want to totally revamp things.
my natural inclination is to assume that because foote is a former defenceman whose assistant coaching experience has largely been on the defensive side of things, he might be even more focused on defence than tocchet was. that might not be fair of me to assume, though, so i’ll be interested to hear what he says in his media availability.
how will elias pettersson fare?
not to pull a Canucks Media™️ and bring petey into everything (although tbh that’s kind of my thing too), but it’s a very big question. my initial reaction is that it would have been nice to have a head coach who hadn’t been sitting here watching petey struggle for the last year, and thus has existing bias about the player. and in terms of getting through to the player and helping him get back to his ceiling and true potential, i don’t know if someone who was already there and failed to do so is the best option? at the same time, he’ll be very familiar with what petey struggled with last year (in terms of both hockey and the well-documented team drama) and while i’ve not heard much reference as to how close their relationship is (as opposed to like, hughes/foote, myers/foote, etc.), there is a pre-existing relationship that is hopefully a good one.
adam, please be nice to petey 😭
who will be the assistant coaches?
with a first-time head coach, we will likely see the organization target experienced assistant coaches. we may very well have actual names by this time tomorrow, in fact. some names we might see are the current assistant coaches on the team returning — yogi, gonchar — as well as other members of the organization (i don’t think the sedins will move into a full-time assistant coaching role, but you never know tbh).
my main hope is that we see someone more offensively-minded join the staff — our 5v5 offence and power play both need to be better for the canucks to be a playoff contender, and i just don’t know that adam foote is the guy for that lol.
relation to the hockey canada trial
a bit of an elephant in the room is that adam foote is the father of cal foote, one of the players who is currently on trial for the 2018 sexual assault case at the world juniors. while it’s not fair to blame someone for their adult son’s actions, adam foote has undeniable ties to this — and obviously there are questions about how much he knew prior to the victim coming forward, how much he’s contributing to his son’s legal team, and such. and, beyond that, it’s just not the best thing in the world that our new head coach’s son may be convicted of of sexual assault in the coming months. i just though this was an important piece to mention.
general vibe check?
ok, a bit of a disclaimer for this one: my vibes don’t have to be your vibes 🙏
i will be honest and say that foote is the head coaching candidate who i was really hoping the team wouldn’t go with, and i was already getting excited about the manny malhotra hiring i’d convinced myself we were getting 😭 i was hoping for a bit of a fresh start, and was excited to hopefully see some new offensive life in the team. i’m definitely being a little pre-judgemental here, but my initial reaction to the news has been that we might just be seeing more of the same, with someone less experienced at the helm.
that being said, i’m willing to have an open mind. maybe foote + some experienced offensive assistant coaches will be the combo that is needed to help unlock the team’s ceiling, and by december 2025 we will be singing management’s praises for taking a risk in choosing him!
again, these are just my vibes, not the way i’m telling you to feel.

Been highkey feeling this way too, just cuz Hughes likes Foote doesn't mean everyone does 😭
I detest how all team decisions revolve around “keeping Quinn happy.” you can’t prioritize what he likes over what’s best for the team, I don’t care how much of a superstar he is. sure you want to keep him, but if the team keeps losing, no amount of respect for the coaching staff is going to keep him around. allowing him to exert such a level of influence over organizational decisions is not going to end well.

Found an unopened hockey pack from dollarama while decluttering. I stopped buying hockey cards more or less around 2019 so there's nothing too recent here. I used to buy any mixed packs I saw with any of the pens visible. Time to get my binders out again, reorganize everything and visit dollarama to buy packs cause I've almost 5 years of hockey cards to catch up on XD

I’ve seen people say that they didn’t like Ares in the show because he wasn’t “intimidating enough” or “scary.” Personally, I think Adam Copeland was a great choice.
This man is a 4-time WWE Champion, a 7-time World Heavyweight Champion, and a Triple Crown Champion. He is an award winning pro-wrestler, inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. This man knows violence. The idea of just standing next to him is intimidating.
His Ares is one who’s cocky and smug and laughs at the very idea of war. He treats conflict like a game because, to him, it is. He sees death and destruction as entertainment and he smiles like he’d sleep better after killing you.
Ares doesn’t need to be all gruff and serious in order to be intimidating, just the potential of danger of enough. You can tell by looking at him that, if he wants to be scary, he’ll be scary.
Adam Copeland is a fantastic Ares.
