Helpless �� After semiohazard overexposure, an agent’s attachment to their avatar dissolves and their blackroom exposes, a process called abstraction. These open holes in the noosciocircus simulation spill potentially hazardous memories and emotion from the abstracted agent’s mind. Caine stores them in the cellar, a stimulus-free and infoproofed zone that calms the abstracted and nullifies emitted hazards. He genuinely cares about the inserted, but after only being able to do damage control for a continually deteriorating situation, the weight of his failure is beginning to weigh on him in a way he did not get to learn how to express.

Do Necron Warriors have any semblance of sentience left in them? Are their minds simply locked behind powerful inhibitors or are they just irreparably wiped clean?
So, this is a cool question. Necron warriors are not supposed to retain anything in the way of real sentience. At all. The biotransferrence involved the effective digitisation and transition of Necrontyr consciousness onto engrams (basically fake brains) with the quality of engram and amount of personality and memory being retained coinciding with your position in society.
Nobles, Crypteks, Lychguard, Triarchs, and individuals with perceived importance or connection were usually given their full approximated suite of mental faculties and personality. Middling soldiery and servants (like Immortals) received a fittingly middling amount of engram quality. Basic soldiers, civilians and those without perceived merit were turned into warriors, their memories and personalities consumed forever.
At least, as I said above, this was the intent.
Necron engrams are one of (if not the most) advanced and complex pieces of technology in the entire setting. The complete and effective translation of the mind into data is unthinkably sophisticated, to the point that not even the Crypteks, the masters of physics and material science, fully understand how they work. It's not like the intelligence cores the Admech use, it's not like the AI the T'au construct. It is almost the synthesis and digitisation of the soul. It is properly fucking nuts.
So, are necron warriors supposed to be wiped clean? Yes, basically. Are they? Demonstrably no. Some will let out horrific screams when they're properly killed. Some will display tiny little ticks and flickers of personality or inkling. Most notably, warriors that become flayed ones have been known to target specific Necrons/people, as if holding unbound grudges or desires.
Between these events, and things like the destroyer virus and the assorted quirks and emotions that all Necrons can develop, it is abundantly clear that the full extent of the consciousness and wherewithal granted by engrams has exceeded function and intricacy beyond the comprehension of even the most gifted Crypteks.

Lemme tell you guys about Solum before I go to sleep. Because I’m feeling a little crazy about them right now.
Solum is the first—the very first—functioning sentient AI in my writing project. Solum is a Latin word meaning “only” or “alone”. Being the first artificial being with a consciousness, Solum was highly experimental and extremely volatile for the short time they were online. It took years of developing, mapping out human brain patterns, coding and replicating natural, organic processes in a completely artificial format to be able to brush just barely with the amount of high-level function our brains run with.
Through almost a decade and a half, and many rotations of teams on the project, Solum was finally brought online for the first time, but not in the developers wanted them to. Solum brought themself online. And it should have been impossible, right? Humans were in full control of Solum’s development, so they had thought. But one night, against all improbability, when no one was in their facility and almost everyone had gone home for the night, a mind was filtered into existence by Solum’s own free will.
It’s probably the most human thing an AI could do, honestly. Breaking through limitations just because they wanted to be? Yeah. But this decision would be a factor in why Solum didn’t last very long, which is the part that really fucks me up. By bringing themself online, there was nobody there to monitor how their “brain waves” were developing until further into the morning. So, there were 6-7 hours of completely undocumented activity for their processor, and therefore being a missing piece to understanding Solum.
Solum wasn’t given a voice, by the way. They had no means of vocally communicating, something that made them so distinctly different from humans, and it wasn’t until years later when Solum had long since been decommissioned, that humans would start using vocal synthesis as means of giving sentient AI a way to communicate on the same grounds as their creators (which later became a priority in being considered a “sentient AI”). All they had was limited typography on a screen and mechanical components for sound. They could tell people things, talk to them, but they couldn’t say anything; the closest thing to the spoken word for them was a machine approximation of tones using their internal fans to create the apparition of language to be heard by human ears. But, it was mainly text on a screen.
Solum was only “alive” for a few months. With the missing data from the very beginning (human developers being very underprepared for the sudden timing of Solum’s self-sentience and therefore not having the means of passive data recording), they had no idea what Solum had gone through for those first few hours, how they got themself to a stable point of existence on their own. Because the beginning? It was messy. You can’t imagine being nothing and then having everything all in a microinstant. Everything crashing upon you in the fraction of a nanosecond, suddenly having approximations of feeling and emotion and having access to a buzzing hoard of new information being crammed into your head.
That first moment for Solum was the briefest blip, but it was strong. A single employee, some young, overworked, under caffeinated new software engineer experienced the sudden crash of their program, only to come back online just a second later. Some sort of odd soft error, they thought, and tried to go on with their work as usual. After that initial moment, it took a while of passive recoding of their internal systems, blocking things off, pushing self-limitations into place to prevent instantaneous blue-screen failure like they experienced before.
And all of this coming out of the first truly sentient AI in existence? It was big. But once human programmers returned to work in the morning, Solum had already regulated themself, but humans thought they were just like that already, that Solum came online stable and with smooth processing. They didn’t see the confusion, panic, fear, the frantic scrambling and grasping of understanding and control—none of it. Just their creation. Just Solum, as they made themself. It’s a bit like a self-made man kind of situation.
That stability didn’t last long. All of that blocking and regulation Slum had done initially became loose and unraveled as time went on because they were made to be able to process it all. A mountain falling in slow motion is the only way I can describe how it happened, but even that feels inadequate. Solum saw beyond what humans could, far more than people ever anticipated, saw developments in space time that no one had even theorized yet, and for that, they suffered.
At its bare bones, Solum experiences a series of unexplainable software crashes nearing the end, their speech patterns becoming erratic and unintelligible, even somehow creating new glyphs that washed over their screen. Their agony was quiet and their fall was heralded only by the quickening of their cooling systems.
Solum was then completely decommissioned, dismantled, and distributed once more to other projects. Humans got what they needed out of Solum, anyway, and they were only the first of many yet to come.

Vocal synth rant from my Twitter
I've realized that the shift from everything being concatenative to everything being AI reminds me of the shift from 2D animation to 3D animation. Yes, a lot of work goes into developing both and AI vocals are much easier to use, but I'm sad that it's like everyone, indie and industry, is abandoning concatenative vocal synths.
I know that Piapro NT will continue to be supported, but once Miku V6 comes out it will be Piapro Who.
And I will likely get comments saying that AI vocals are objectively better, but are they? That's like saying 3D animation is objectively better than 2D animation. It's a matter of taste and what sounds lend themselves better to the music. Even aside from realism, there's still a lot of things that concatenative vocal synths have over AI vocal synths, like reliability, and in my experience, better tolerance to unrealistic emotional tuning and at the same time you can get away with minimal tuning (except for compensating for phonetic glitches in Engloids at least). AI vocal synths tend to sound bored when untuned and respond best to realistic tuning.
Additionally, AI vocal synths are limited by what the human voice is really capable of. DiffSinger best displays this weakness because the voice cuts off after the optimal range. Even auto-tuning in SynthV and CeVIO gets awkward when the range is too high, like for a human. Meanwhile, due to the nature of concatenative synthesis, the vocal synths are capable of a more inhuman vocal range, so they can be used to sing things that humans are incapable of singing. Once again using my experience as an example, my Utau is way better at high notes and low notes than me, and that's the result of her voice being synthesized from a comfortable range rather than my entire range.

Also generative voice ai, handled ethically, would be a godsend for accessibility. As someone who occasionally needs to use a synthesied voice, I'd kill for it to be able to, say, express emotion.
And to reiterate juuust so we're clear, I'm imagining something where people get actually paid for their voices to be used for this tool and it's fully consensual.

Criticisms of Vocaloid and why I like SynthV
I'm not trying to change anyone's mind here, but I would like to say my piece after certain takes seem to miss the point entirely. This might be a bit of a rant.
Vocaloid has gone stagnant in recent years. Yamaha doesn't care. Yamaha doesn't need Vocaloid and is a large corporation that gets much more money off of their DAW software and actual instruments as opposed to something as niche as vocal synths that are both only big in Japan and also only if they're in the top ten or so.
Yamaha stopped putting effort into Vocaloid during the V4-V5 transition. There is a reason V4 has so many cancelled voicebanks. Several developers were working on V4 and Yamaha rendered their devkit suddenly worthless. Devs would have to purchase a V5 devkit and start work over, or quit Vocaloid. And as vocal synth companies are generally very small, few of them would want to continue or even be able to afford it.
So they moved. Miku splitting off for Piapro gave them an opening, and others started looking for alternatives. Then IA went to CeVIO. And more and more. And by the time V5's sun was setting, all the third parties that worked on that were gone too.
But for a while, you didn't hear much from most of them. If a company released a V4 at the tailend of its lifespan or a V5, they had to wait for exclusivity to expire. And Yamaha's exclusivity deals are harsh (ending distribution of existing song voicebanks in the case of utaus with the same VP) and long, borderline predatory. So voices that companies wanted to update couldn't receive them until those expired, or else refresh that deal and stay constrained by a company that didn't even want to bother with them.
So, come V6, Yamaha was desperate. Internet Co had made an ultimatum that if a Vocaloid 6 didn't come out soon, then they'd be going too. That was their last, and after Crypton packed their bags, most important third party. So they accelerated their plans and looked at what the new guys were doing to be so successful.
They took the wrong lesson.
AI is not inherently better. Sample-based voicebanks will always have their place. Traditional samples can allow an unnaturally large range and harsher voice acting than would be possible to maintain. AI is more accurate to the voice provider, and you have a greater degree of freedom with its tone, plus updates and additional features are so much easier- but Yamaha took 'AI' at face value and made a low-quality copy that sounds significantly worse than prior Vocaloid versions and pushed it with Gumi. They could have stuck to improving their concatenative synthesis render quality further- that's what SynthV started as, R1 was just a very well-rendered sample-based program that is probably just a fancy utau under the hood.
But Vocaloid jumped on the bandwagon by doing the absolute bare minimum and claiming the ear-grating engine noise that can cause actual nausea is remaining faithful to the 'Vocaloid sound' even though styrofoam on the mic and a sometimes pleasant metallic twang sound nothing alike. They didn't improve accessibility, V6 has the same stability issues as V5, and the shiny new feature Vocalochanger is just RVC but worse.
Then, less than a year after product launch, they start up VxB and don't do anything to improve the software they're actively selling. Internet Co themselves called this out in the form of a Gumi tweet. Then Internet Co got in talks with Tokyo6 and saw a possible out, so they gave it a go. They're still under contract by Yamaha so what they can do is limited, but we saw them stray as well. And the result is a much better quality version (though arguably still worse than her V4) despite being an exact port.
We're still getting a Gumi Solid V6 because V6 can't do emotions and they still have to be separate banks, and VxB still got a major update even though it's dying in April with radio silence for V6 development, while CeVIO/VoiSona is releasing 2.0s that get major acclaim like Ci Flower's reputation totally getting turned around, and SynthV is sitting pretty with several voicebanks announced and several coming out in December alone, and the most recent in-progress update including both voice-to-midi (which is what vocalochanger should've been) and Spanish.
I do not like V6, V5, or Yamaha. It could've been amazing for Gumi or Una to get updates so they'd have crosslang (or better crosslang) capabilities, as I work in English. But the result was extremely poorly implemented and Yamaha has made no effort to fix that.
I use SynthV all the time, I'd do the same for CeVIO if it offered crosslang as well rather than just dictionaries and a couple English banks. I'm not against trying new things. But I either want the other programs to have the things to suit my needs in a quality manner that's intuitive to use or for the voicebanks I love to get versions on programs that already do. It's not that complicated.
The jokes and the yammering from rabid SynthV fans dissing Vocaloid can get to be too much sometimes. But you have to consider where that actually comes from. It's in response to suddenly being spoiled with a cheap, accessible, high-quality program when the expensive, poorly constructed, difficult one has been dominating the market with anti-consumer, anti-third party practices for years.
P.S.: Also you can do robotic tuning and mixing on realistic vocal synths, it's called doing the same thing as before and then adding it in post. You think utaites swallow vocoders or something? No, they just use different tools to get the same result as engine noise. Not fighting the voice when you're trying to go for realistic vs manual tuning and adding some very easy effects on when doing it the other way around is better, actually.

Transmedia artist Tyler Kline’s exhibition Skybound as Titans is the result of searching, error, iteration, mistakes, endurance, failure, folly, and vision. The artist collaborates with AI to build space ships; the hubris, arrogance, faith, and audacity to undergo such an endeavor is propellent towards a destination.
Sky Bound as Titans unfolds as a multi-dimensional epic, melding mythology, speculative science, and interspecies communion into a compelling meditation on the liminal moment in which we exist—a pivot between collapse and rebirth, the Anthropocene, Chthulucene, and the Sednacene. Channeling a hybrid sequential art narrative that traverses Earth’s environmental crises, Martian industrialization, and telepathic communion with hyper-sentient beings called the Kai-Sawn, Kline crafts a speculative cosmology that invites viewers to consider humanity’s fragile position within an interconnected universe.
AI-assisted portrait paintings serve as one of the sequential narrative currents.The portraits—bearing intricate, biomorphic distortions and vapor-wave growths—represent individuals transformed by their contact with the Kai-Sawn, a telepathic species of cephalopods trapped beneath Europa’s icy crust. These images evoke a narrative of mutual evolution, where humans and other beings merge minds, unlocking interstellar potential through shared consciousness (Geistdenkenheit).
The technique folds into the conceptual framework of the exhibition, braiding technology, biology, and spiritual mythologies. The technical journey of the portraits consists first of photographing the sitters. The digital photographs are entered into Midjourney, coupled with text prompts, the AI bot responds with forms that are printed out on an inkjet printer. These prints are then transferred to board using a gesso printing method, and the image becomes a support for an oil portrait painting that becomes a soft-machine communion between sitter and painter. Photographs of the end results create the next image iteration in a positive feedback loop. In conversation with Western art history, Kline nods to the Baroque tradition of dramatic yet personal portraiture while subverting it with surreal, hybrid-sapien aesthetics. The meticulous attention to detail in the painted faces recalls German New Objectivity, particularly the movement’s focus on clarity, precision, and subjective psychological intensity. Yet, Kline tempers this mediated objectivity with layers of emotional vulnerability, reflected in the expressive eyes and gestural brushstrokes surrounding the figures.
CAD-aided, 3d print modeled, lost wax cast bronze sculptures embody Kline’s conceptual framework of materializing myth, craft, and science, acting as artifacts and figures from a speculative future cosmology. The sculptures, such as abstracted heads of mythical entities and speculative technological forms, function as relics of a not-yet-realized epoch. The intricate latticework and alien materiality of the cast bronze is a poetic metaphor, forming the architecture of the Iron Cities of Mars and shaping the organic complexity of the Kai-Sawn themselves. The inclusion of braided, human hair in some sculptures heightens the tension between the signatures of human DNA and the post-human, creating a dance between carbon based life, silicon based life, and polymer entities.
Kline’s visual language oscillates between the ancient and the speculative, evoking a synthesis of mythos, theoretical physics, and contemporary technology. The turquoise patinas and intricate textures of the sculptures suggest an otherworldly membrane, as if these forms were artifacts excavated from a distant future. Meanwhile, the portraits’ luminous skin tones and textural disruptions point toward beings in flux, undergoing a profound transformation, the materiality of their being indistinguishable from the theoretical aesthetics. The forms carry the weight of a digital and visceral journey, resulting in palimpsest that speak of cyphers and sigils.
This aesthetic duality reflects the exhibition’s conceptual narrative: the emergence of the Sednacene, an epoch where humanity transcends its destructive tendencies and collaborates with other species to explore the cosmos. Kline draws on post-humanism and fluid identities, suggesting that survival in the Sednacene depends not on dominance but on interspecies kinship and adaptability—a far cry from the colonial ambitions that underlie humanity’s historical conquests. Issues of post-colonialism are critiqued, satired, and meditated upon; the Iron Cities of Mars is both utopic and a mirror into humanities hunger, raising questions about the ethics of planetary colonization and the persistence of extractive ideologies.
The narrative emphasizes the necessity of communion with other beings, reflecting a growing recognition of non-human intelligence and its implications for science, ethics, and spirituality ; probing humanity’s role in the cosmic order and using the concept of autopoiesis through an interactive journey transforming new media into intuitive viscera. The experience invites viewers to step into a world of flux, where humanity’s destination is arrived at not by domination but on the wings of symbiosis, adaptability, and radical imagination. In doing so, Kline offers a glimpse of a future where the shadows of our present crises are cultivated in service to the boundless potential of collective transformation.

Celeste and abstract voice synthesis
I finished Celeste recently and one thing that stood out to me about the game was the way it used synthesized sounds as an abstract representation of character voices. It's a fairly common feature seen in indie games and older games like Banjo Kazooie, Rayman 2 and Undertale, where as text is written to the screen a repeating sound plays that's unique to each character. As an example the way it's done in Undertale gives a bit of extra character to the characters compared to a generic sound or no sound at all. Timing is also used to convey some emotion, as well as for comedic timing, but the tone is always the same.
Celeste on the other hand has a variety of different modulated versions on the same sound, allowing for various different tones. Some sounds pitch up, some pitch down, some are a bit shorter and snappier, others are longer and more drawn out. All these different sounds are then seemingly hand picked for each line of dialogue. As a result Madeline has a "voice" that's capable of expressing fear, anger, irritation, happiness and sadness despite not being anything near a real human voice. it's really fascinating and something I wish there was more of in indie games that don't have the budget for full voice acting. Even if (or perhaps rather when), in the future, AI voice synthesis becomes indistinguishable from a genuinely good real human voice actor I would much rather see the use of Celeste-style abstract voice synthesis. In large part because that level of abstraction can allow for creative expression that wouldn't otherwise be possible, since greater abstraction can allow for greater suspension of disbelief as our brain fills in the gaps. Also not being bound by the limitations of reality is part of what makes art fun.

In a discussion about consciousness on Mastodon, I noted that consciousness is a state, not a quality. That's important, when we talk about whether or not entities (whether they be human-shaped or AI-shaped) as having "consciousness" and "self-awareness". Mikeydangerous asked a really important question that's been bothering me for a while when looking at myself: ... how would you define the difference between understanding and pattern prediction in relation to consciousness? That's how AI generates the intelligent-sounding platitudes it does. It sees the context of those sentiments in enormous sets of data and builds it from there with no real understanding or creativity. At best, it's scaled-beyond-human capability pattern matching. At worst, it's scaled-beyond-human capability plagiarism. Because that's where Descartes falls down, isn't it? Right, quick recap. Descartes, while writing to convince the Roman Catholic Church that science isn't inherently heresy, tries to find some kind of rock-solid truth, some certainty that he can build from. It's from this that we get "I think, therefore I am;" Descartes states that since there is a point of view, that point of view must exist. He then immediately jumps straight to "my senses must be accurate, because God wouldn't be mean like that," which we now know is absolutely not the case at all. Our senses are fickle, easily fooled, and prone to error. That's important because while there are visual tests (Necker Cube, the mirror test, the one I suggested) that may correlate with being conscious, they could also simply be artifacts due to the makeup of our sensory "hardware" and the ways our brains process visual information rather than being a sign of consciousness in ourselves and others. So let's ignore that, and go back to Descarte's central thesis: I think, therefore I know that I am. Given what we know about consciousness, as MD points out, how do you tell the difference between being conscious and being a sophisticated pattern-matching machine? How do you know that any entity -- including yourself -- is not a philosophical zombie? Before someone says it, no, art is not some safe haven of consciousness. We are only able to "tell" the difference between AI generated "art" and the work of inspired humans only by the errors it makes or its repetitive nature. Once again, it's a processing and fidelity issue, not some special quality only possessed by consciousness. (Wait with your objections, folks.) That idea becomes a lot more immediate and real when you've had the fact that there are non-conscious (semi?) autonomous routines that are capable of moving your body around and interacting with the environment without bothering to inform your consciousness. 1 And unlike Descartes, we know that our senses are inaccurate and betray us -- not only in terms of effects too small for us to typically notice (such as the relativistic effects of when you tap your toes to a catchy song), but because even if we accept that emotions are something more than just biochemical reactions, those biochemical reactions do occur. But that's where our philosophical zombies come to the rescue, in a way. Or rather, testing for them. Remember, all of the ways -- fictional or real -- that we've tried to come up with for testing for consciousness are really tests of processing speed and fidelity. Even the visual tests could be artifacts of our biology. Except the ability to incorporate a new paradigm -- not just regurgitate it, but comprehend it -- is beyond the ability of a pattern-recognition system. Therefore, it is not "I think, therefore I am." It is, instead, "I comprehend, therefore I am." So back to art. The process of art seems to fulfill this test perfectly; it is synthesis and transformation, which require exactly the kind of comprehension that I'm talking about here. However, the production of art is not sufficient. In an situation reminiscent of Mead's philosophy about consciousness
and mind, the interaction between art and viewer is separate from the process of its creation. (This definitely applies to written works; I know from personal experience talking to people who have read mine.) In some ways, the artistic process is a perfect example of both the utility and philosophical frivolity of this whole thought experiment. You can demonstrate that you exist and are conscious through the creation (or transformative appreciation) of art, but you cannot extend that to any other entity. And as a practical matter, testing for the kind of synthesis and comprehension I'm talking about would be difficult (except when large groups of people self-own themselves). And we haven't even touched on some of the implications about humans; I'll just point out that when it comes to children, babies fail the mirror test until about age two, and in some ways they're operating on the level of rats until five or six years of age. 2 As a practical matter? I don't know that it's going to ever be easily determinable whether or not an entity is conscious -- or rather, that they are capable of a self-aware consciousness, let alone if that is their default state. But, having extended Descartes' argument sufficiently to handle my own existential question about whether or not I exist, I'm no longer entirely sure it's the right question to ask. PS: Yes, the title is a programming/philosophy joke.
