coworker today casually mentioned “the ai text message summary” and because i have been living in a blissful world where i haven’t updated to ios 18, i laughed! i thought she was joking! what do you MEAN a summary of a text message. what kind of texts are you people sending that need to be summarized 😭 we have strayed so far from god
#ai generated texts i guess????#every time i get a ‘chat gpt organized’ email from a students it’s so pointlessly long#20 unnecessary bullet points#like in that instance it clearly expects me to also be using ai i guess to summarize it back to a normal email#what a make work project#anti ai

The previous post I reblogged reminded me of this survey the school system I work for sent out and my scathing reply:

“Teaching students to leverage AI to support their learning” oh HELL naw. You really think that giving someone a moped is going to make their legs stronger than riding an actual bicycle? No! It doesn’t work like that. In order to make your brain stronger you cannot use something to think for you.
I wanted to say “Bullshit. You fucking deadbeat admins set the fire that is burning our whole district to the ground; and you’re the reason why we can’t keep new hires to save our lives,” but I also value having my job so I did not cuss them out and I was so brave about it.
#anti AI#I swear to god if they start integrating ChatGPT into the curriculum I’m getting my union coworkers to go on strike with me#The ONLY acceptable forms of AI in a school are ones made by students for programming class#OR the ones that detect cancer and project its growth used in the medical field

btw it does make me feel like. wild chimpanzee levels of insane that we have professors with multiple degrees and careers they earned pre-genAI who are proposing to do major multi-thousand-or-million-dollar research projects and they're so fucking lazy that they're writing the proposals for these research projects using genAI. why the fuck should we give you money for your research if you're too stupid and lazy to write a grant proposal telling us why we should do that.
#my UNAFFILIATED NON-REPRESENTATIVE opinion is that they should be blacklisted from applying on research integrity grounds#but there's not one god damn thing i can do about it because the GC moves so slowly we won't have a policy on it for like 5 more years!#i do also feel this way about profs who get their underpaid grad students to write their grant proposals as well honestly#but at least in that case a fucking human being is still writing it & they're often later employed on the project itself if funded#equally i feel this way about review members who want to review applications using AI. why agree to serve in the first place motherfucker#nat.txt

AI is killing creativity
#i am. in utter disbelief at some of the teachers' view on ai at my art school#just accepting it as if nothing. One of them showed us a#video of how ai was changing the world and stuff like “it just helps people who cant draw to express their ideas”. But where is the humanity#in that???? Art is one of the most beautiful way humans can express themselves and you're just letting a machine do it?? The other day we#had a collage assignment were we had to create a scene for a newspaper article#and there was a student who instead of manually searching#for pictures and modifying them#simply used the generative ai thingy in photoshop. Our teacher then said “did you use ai for that? well if#it does the job#it's fine“ ?!?@#@?@#!?!?@ i am about to destroy a country. I know ai can be used as a tool#like using it for references or#trying to get ideas. But using the result as your final project?????? and the way some people are so nonchalant about it too 😭#I was ranting to my friend about it after class and he just said “idk i dont really care ab ai#it just makes stuff easier“.#My brother in christ!!!!!! you are an artist too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#anyway#i hate ai#ugly ass bitch

The funny thing is though for one of my statistics projects I did the accuracy of generative ai in regards to summarization and comprehension of source material. And the written content I force fed the ai’s I was testing was Lord Byron’s Poetry.
And now I find out his daughter is Ada Lovelace the first computer programmer.
Wrong: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because she was Lord Byron's daughter.
Right: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because that was the closest you could get in 1850 to being a Super Mario 64 speedrunner.

At the California Institute of the Arts, it all started with a videoconference between the registrar’s office and a nonprofit.
One of the nonprofit’s representatives had enabled an AI note-taking tool from Read AI. At the end of the meeting, it emailed a summary to all attendees, said Allan Chen, the institute’s chief technology officer. They could have a copy of the notes, if they wanted — they just needed to create their own account.
Next thing Chen knew, Read AI’s bot had popped up inabout a dozen of his meetings over a one-week span. It was in one-on-one check-ins. Project meetings. “Everything.”
The spread “was very aggressive,” recalled Chen, who also serves as vice president for institute technology. And it “took us by surprise.”
The scenariounderscores a growing challenge for colleges: Tech adoption and experimentation among students, faculty, and staff — especially as it pertains to AI — are outpacing institutions’ governance of these technologies and may even violate their data-privacy and security policies.
That has been the case with note-taking tools from companies including Read AI, Otter.ai, and Fireflies.ai.They can integrate with platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teamsto provide live transcriptions, meeting summaries, audio and video recordings, and other services.
Higher-ed interest in these products isn’t surprising. For those bogged down with virtual rendezvouses, a tool that can ingest long, winding conversations and spit outkey takeaways and action items is alluring. These services can also aid people with disabilities, including those who are deaf.
But the tools can quickly propagate unchecked across a university. They can auto-join any virtual meetings on a user’s calendar — even if that person is not in attendance. And that’s a concern, administrators say, if it means third-party productsthat an institution hasn’t reviewedmay be capturing and analyzing personal information, proprietary material, or confidential communications.
“What keeps me up at night is the ability for individual users to do things that are very powerful, but they don’t realize what they’re doing,” Chen said. “You may not realize you’re opening a can of worms.“
The Chronicle documented both individual and universitywide instances of this trend. At Tidewater Community College, in Virginia, Heather Brown, an instructional designer, unwittingly gave Otter.ai’s tool access to her calendar, and it joined a Faculty Senate meeting she didn’t end up attending. “One of our [associate vice presidents] reached out to inform me,” she wrote in a message. “I was mortified!”

The Future is AI: Are We Preparing Students or Holding Them Back?
This week, a college student made national news after confronting a professor who used ChatGPT to provide grading feedback. Their frustration? “If we’re not allowed to use it, why should you?” The story quickly evolved into a broader debate—centered on cheating, fairness, and academic integrity. Commentators weighed in, warning that tools like ChatGPT would erode student accountability or replace…

I just started grad school this fall after a few years away from school and man I did not realize how dire the AI/LLM situation is in universities now. In the past few weeks:
I chatted with a classmate about how it was going to be a tight timeline on a project for a programming class. He responded "Yeah, at least if we run short on time, we can just ask chatGPT to finish it for us"
One of my professors pulled up chatGPT on the screen to show us how it can sometimes do our homework problems for us and showed how she thanks it after asking it questions "in case it takes over some day."
I asked one of my TAs in a math class to explain how a piece of code he had written worked in an assignment. He looked at it for about 15 seconds then went "I don't know, ask chatGPT"
A student in my math group insisted he was right on an answer to a problem. When I asked where he got that info, he sent me a screenshot of Google gemini giving just blatantly wrong info. He still insisted he was right when I pointed this out and refused to click into any of the actual web pages.
A different student in my math class told me he pays $20 per month for the "computational" version of chatGPT, which he uses for all of his classes and PhD research. The computational version is worth it, he says, because it is wrong "less often". He uses chatGPT for all his homework and can't figure out why he's struggling on exams.
There's a lot more, but it's really making me feel crazy. Even if it was right 100% of the time, why are you paying thousands of dollars to go to school and learn if you're just going to plug everything into a computer whenever you're asked to think??
