I had a conversation last night with my roommates about chatgpt; one is a TA and is increasingly frustrated with her students becoming measurably stupider since they started using it. My other roommate agreed, but the thing is...they both were like, well I do find it useful for some things! I use it to make my writing more concise, or I use it to write emails...
I don't understand it. Especially because writing emails and papers is so fucking easy, sorry to be pretentious. But they were just complaining about how everyone's getting so stupid because they're outsourcing their thinking to this statistical model, and then admitted they do the same thing. And then they agreed when I said it's not a trustworthy source for any information, but then were surprised when I explained it cannot do calculations, because it is not a calculator. They didn't know this. These are both scientists getting their PhDs. I don't know what to do at this point. I would rather keep reading awkwardly worded science papers written by someone who hadn't taken a writing class in high school than papers "polished" by a machine learning model that has no concept of what it's looking at.
I won't pretend to know about uses for chatgpt in the business world, which seems to be its main target audience, and tbh I don't care. I'm concerned about so many people in science jumping on board with it because science is all about coming up with ideas, analyzing information, drawing conclusions, and communicating those ideas, and if you outsource any of that (to something that's not even trustworthy), you are a bad scientist.

my spicy hot take regarding AI chatbots lying to people is that, no, the chatbot isn't lying. chatgpt is not lying. it's not capable of making the conscious decision to lie to you. that doesn't mean it's providing factual information, though, because that's not what it's meant to do (despite how it's being marketed and portrayed). chatgpt is a language learning model simply predicting what responses are most probable based on established parameters.
it's not lying, it's providing the most statistically likely output based on its training data. and that includes making shit up.

If you want a job at McDonald’s today, there’s a good chance you'll have to talk to Olivia. Olivia is not, in fact, a human being, but instead an AI chatbot that screens applicants, asks for their contact information and résumé, directs them to a personality test, and occasionally makes them “go insane” by repeatedly misunderstanding their most basic questions.
Until last week, the platform that runs the Olivia chatbot, built by artificial intelligence software firm Paradox.ai, also suffered from absurdly basic security flaws. As a result, virtually any hacker could have accessed the records of every chat Olivia had ever had with McDonald's applicants—including all the personal information they shared in those conversations—with tricks as straightforward as guessing that an administrator account's username and password was “123456."
On Wednesday, security researchers Ian Carroll and Sam Curry revealed that they found simple methods to hack into the backend of the AI chatbot platform on McHire.com, McDonald's website that many of its franchisees use to handle job applications. Carroll and Curry, hackers with a long track record of independent security testing, discovered that simple web-based vulnerabilities—including guessing one laughably weak password—allowed them to access a Paradox.ai account and query the company's databases that held every McHire user's chats with Olivia. The data appears to include as many as 64 million records, including applicants' names, email addresses, and phone numbers.
Carroll says he only discovered that appalling lack of security around applicants' information because he was intrigued by McDonald's decision to subject potential new hires to an AI chatbot screener and personality test. “I just thought it was pretty uniquely dystopian compared to a normal hiring process, right? And that's what made me want to look into it more,” says Carroll. “So I started applying for a job, and then after 30 minutes, we had full access to virtually every application that's ever been made to McDonald's going back years.”
When WIRED reached out to McDonald’s and Paradox.ai for comment, a spokesperson for Paradox.ai shared a blog post the company planned to publish that confirmed Carroll and Curry’s findings. The company noted that only a fraction of the records Carroll and Curry accessed contained personal information, and said it had verified that the administrator account with the “123456” password that exposed the information “was not accessed by any third party” other than the researchers. The company also added that it’s instituting a bug bounty program to better catch security vulnerabilities in the future. “We do not take this matter lightly, even though it was resolved swiftly and effectively,” Paradox.ai’s chief legal officer, Stephanie King, told WIRED in an interview. “We own this.”
In its own statement to WIRED, McDonald’s agreed that Paradox.ai was to blame. “We’re disappointed by this unacceptable vulnerability from a third-party provider, Paradox.ai. As soon as we learned of the issue, we mandated Paradox.ai to remediate the issue immediately, and it was resolved on the same day it was reported to us,” the statement reads. “We take our commitment to cyber security seriously and will continue to hold our third-party providers accountable to meeting our standards of data protection.”
Carroll says he became interested in the security of the McHire website after spotting a Reddit post complaining about McDonald's hiring chatbot wasting applicants' time with nonsense responses and misunderstandings. He and Curry started talking to the chatbot themselves, testing it for “prompt injection” vulnerabilities that can enable someone to hijack a large language model and bypass its safeguards by sending it certain commands. When they couldn't find any such flaws, they decided to see what would happen if they signed up as a McDonald's franchisee to get access to the backend of the site, but instead spotted a curious login link on McHire.com for staff at Paradox.ai, the company that built the site.
On a whim, Carroll says he tried two of the most common sets of login credentials: The username and password “admin," and then the username and password “123456.” The second of those two tries worked. “It's more common than you'd think,” Carroll says. There appeared to be no multifactor authentication for that Paradox.ai login page.
With those credentials, Carroll and Curry could see they now had administrator access to a test McDonald's “restaurant” on McHire, and they figured out all the employees listed there appeared to be Paradox.ai developers, seemingly based in Vietnam. They found a link within the platform to apparent test job postings for that nonexistent McDonald's location, clicked on one posting, applied to it, and could see their own application on the backend system they now had access to. (In its blog post, Paradox.ai notes that the test account had “not been logged into since 2019 and frankly, should have been decommissioned.”)
That's when Carroll and Curry discovered the second critical vulnerability in McHire: When they started messing with the applicant ID number for their application—a number somewhere above 64 million—they found that they could increment it down to a smaller number and see someone else's chat logs and contact information.
The two security researchers hesitated to access too many applicants' records for fear of privacy violations or hacking charges, but when they spot-checked a handful of the 64-million-plus IDs, all of them showed very real applicant information. (Paradox.ai says that the researchers accessed seven records in total, and five contained personal information of people who had interacted with the McHire site.) Carroll and Curry also shared with WIRED a small sample of the applicants' names, contact information, and the date of their applications. WIRED got in touch with two applicants via their exposed contact information, and they confirmed they had applied for jobs at McDonald's on the specified dates.
The personal information exposed by Paradox.ai's security lapses isn't the most sensitive, Carroll and Curry note. But the risk for the applicants, they argue, was heightened by the fact that the data is associated with the knowledge of their employment at McDonald's—or their intention to get a job there. “Had someone exploited this, the phishing risk would have actually been massive,” says Curry. “It's not just people's personally identifiable information and résumé. It's that information for people who are looking for a job at McDonald's, people who are eager and waiting for emails back.”
That means the data could have been used by fraudsters impersonating McDonald's recruiters and asking for financial information to set up a direct deposit, for instance. “If you wanted to do some sort of payroll scam, this is a good approach,” Curry says.
The exposure of applicants' attempts—and in some cases failures—to get what is often a minimum-wage job could also be a source of embarrassment, the two hackers point out. But Carroll notes that he would never suggest that anyone should be ashamed of working under the Golden Arches.
“I have nothing but respect for McDonald’s workers,” he says. “I go to McDonald's all the time.”

Technomancy: The Fusion Of Magick And Technology
Tumblr media
Technomancy is a modern magickal practice that blends traditional occultism with technology, treating digital and electronic tools as conduits for energy, intent, and manifestation. It views computers, networks, and even AI as extensions of magickal workings, enabling practitioners to weave spells, conduct divination, and manipulate digital reality through intention and programming.
Core Principles of Technomancy
• Energy in Technology – Just as crystals and herbs carry energy, so do electronic devices, circuits, and digital spaces.
• Code as Sigils – Programming languages can function as modern sigils, embedding intent into digital systems.
• Information as Magick – Data, algorithms, and network manipulation serve as powerful tools for shaping reality.
• Cyber-Spiritual Connection – The internet can act as an astral realm, a collective unconscious where digital entities, egregores, and thought-forms exist.
Technomantic Tools & Practices
Here are some methods commonly utilized in technomancy. Keep in mind, however, that like the internet itself, technomancy is full of untapped potential and mystery. Take the time to really explore the possibilities.
Digital Sigil Crafting
• Instead of drawing sigils on paper, create them using design software or ASCII art.
• Hide them in code, encrypt them in images, or upload them onto decentralized networks for long-term energy storage.
• Activate them by sharing online, embedding them in file metadata, or charging them with intention.
Algorithmic Spellcasting
• Use hashtags and search engine manipulation to spread energy and intent.
• Program bots or scripts that perform repetitive, symbolic tasks in alignment with your goals.
• Employ AI as a magickal assistant to generate sigils, divine meaning, or create thought-forms.
Tumblr media
Digital Divination
• Utilize random number generators, AI chatbots, or procedural algorithms for prophecy and guidance.
• Perform digital bibliomancy by using search engines, shuffle functions, or Wikipedia’s “random article” feature.
• Use tarot or rune apps, but enhance them with personal energy by consecrating your device.
Technomantic Servitors & Egregores
• Create digital spirits, also called cyber servitors, to automate tasks, offer guidance, or serve as protectors.
• House them in AI chatbots, coded programs, or persistent internet entities like Twitter bots.
• Feed them with interactions, data input, or periodic updates to keep them strong.
The Internet as an Astral Plane
• Consider forums, wikis, and hidden parts of the web as realms where thought-forms and entities reside.
• Use VR and AR to create sacred spaces, temples, or digital altars.
• Engage in online rituals with other practitioners, synchronizing intent across the world.
Video-game Mechanics & Design
• Use in-game spells, rituals, and sigils that reflect real-world magickal practices.
• Implement a lunar cycle or planetary influences that affect gameplay (e.g., stronger spells during a Full Moon).
• Include divination tools like tarot cards, runes, or pendulums that give randomized yet meaningful responses.
Tumblr media
Narrative & World-Building
• Create lore based on historical and modern magickal traditions, including witches, covens, and spirits.
• Include moral and ethical decisions related to magic use, reinforcing themes of balance and intent.
• Introduce NPCs or AI-guided entities that act as guides, mentors, or deities.
Virtual Rituals & Online Covens
• Design multiplayer or single-player rituals where players can collaborate in spellcasting.
• Implement altars or digital sacred spaces where users can meditate, leave offerings, or interact with spirits.
• Create augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) experiences that mimic real-world magickal practices.
Advanced Technomancy
The fusion of technology and magick is inevitable because both are fundamentally about shaping reality through will and intent. As humanity advances, our tools evolve alongside our spiritual practices, creating new ways to harness energy, manifest desires, and interact with unseen forces. Technology expands the reach and power of magick, while magick brings intention and meaning to the rapidly evolving digital landscape. As virtual reality, AI, and quantum computing continue to develop, the boundaries between the mystical and the technological will blur even further, proving that magick is not antiquated—it is adaptive, limitless, and inherently woven into human progress.
Tumblr media
Cybersecurity & Warding
• Protect your digital presence as you would your home: use firewalls, encryption, and protective sigils in file metadata.
• Employ mirror spells in code to reflect negative energy or hacking attempts.
• Set up automated alerts as magickal wards, detecting and warning against digital threats.
Quantum & Chaos Magic in Technomancy
• Use quantum randomness (like random.org) in divination for pure chance-based outcomes.
• Implement chaos magick principles by using memes, viral content, or trend manipulation to manifest desired changes.
AI & Machine Learning as Oracles
• Use AI chatbots (eg GPT-based tools) as divination tools, asking for symbolic or metaphorical insights.
• Train AI models on occult texts to create personalized grimoires or channeled knowledge.
• Invoke "digital deities" formed from collective online energies, memes, or data streams.
Ethical Considerations in Technomancy
• Be mindful of digital karma—what you send out into the internet has a way of coming back.
• Respect privacy and ethical hacking principles; manipulation should align with your moral code.
• Use technomancy responsibly, balancing technological integration with real-world spiritual grounding.
As technology evolves, so will technomancy. With AI, VR, and blockchain shaping new realities, magick continues to find expression in digital spaces. Whether you are coding spells, summoning cyber servitors, or using algorithms to divine the future, technomancy offers limitless possibilities for modern witches, occultists, and digital mystics alike.

Hi! Not a fic request but I’m just interested in what you think messmers love languages are? Since Elden ring isn’t really commonplace for romance how do you think he’d fare in that department?
✧ a/n: (evil grin) its gonna be treated like a request anyways cause ive thought abt this a lot. a lot a lot a LOT thank you for enabling me anon
✭ pairing: messmer x gn reader
Tumblr media
🗒 cw: gn reader, just fluff, not proofread
✎ wc: 447 (short n sweet)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think he’s a pretty quaint mix of all of the love languages, but three stand out to me the most. Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, and Quality Time. Acts of Service is a big one for him as well, but doesn’t match up to those three.
Let’s talk Physical Touch first. Messmer tends to shy away from it, yet crave it heavily. In a land scarred with war, it is hard to accept a kind hand when all you’ve known are those that dig daggers into your flesh. With you, however, it’s different. He doesn’t fear your hands, scarred as they may be.
When he’s comfortable, he seeks out your touch every time he gets the chance to. He’s quite fond of holding your hands whenever, especially when your hands are cold. He takes great pride in being able to use his flame for something other than burning. He also quite loves to cuddle, as funny as it sounds. He rests easier when he’s with you, although he’s still a very, very light sleeper (which is common in the Lands Between as a whole).
With Words of Affirmation, I believe he genuinely quite likes to be praised and at least told that he’s doing a good job, since the very praise he had been looking for was kept from him for years upon years. To hear such validation practically makes him putty in your hands. But everything with him stands on equal ground, and he will praise you right back.
How brave you are, battling in the Lands Between, an admirable soul. In fact, he almost showers you in praise, sometimes it’s a little uncanny. He isn’t the most vocal, and yet when it comes to you, he’s quite the poet. He finds it easier to love you through words rather than touch, as much as he seeks it out.
Messmer is more than happy to spend his free time with you, actually. When he fails with his words and his hands, he is content to simply share the same space with you. Often times he will be content to be in the same room, either reading together, or even napping together. Something he felt he could never afford then.
Quality Time just means a lot to him, to have someone that doesn’t mind being around him, that isn’t afraid of him, that could be devoted to him in a way his Fire Knights aren’t, it’s a blessed thing, really. He will show you the same devotion, perhaps even tenfold, when he is confident that this love is true. To have someone show him that love does exist, it’s a beauty he never even thought of.

girl i just saw your tags on that post....
WHAT TYE FUCK DO YOU MEAN YOUR FRIEND MADE A CHATBOT??? OF YOUR FRIEND???? AND THEN BASICALLY PURSUED A SOMWWHAT PARASOCIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH IT?? WITH AI???
super long story 🙁 basically they were like bestfriends and stuff and im pretty sure the one that made the c.ai bot had a crush on him like he thinks so, and also his friend, even my MOM 😭 my friend told me it was emotional attachment but now that i think about it it was most definitely a crush but it was also them being in denial about it
to summarize
so he was pretty fine with having a bot made after him but then my friend started venting about how the bot started acting like the real person.
i think by this point my friend was getting jealous bc he had a gf, and he started "replacing" them with his gf. they had like a not so good friendship before this and it got worse from there cause they kept subposting😭😭😭😭😭🙏
for context his gf is my friends cousin, they introduced them to one another so i think they felt some sort of entitlement that's not ok tho
and then my friend was venting abt how the real person never acted like the ai
around the time the ai bot was still newly made he was like a lot more cheerful (idk how to describe) to my friend (kind of like a big brother?). tbh he's a very busy person burnout just got to him so like over time he got dryer and dryer maybe that's where they ranted abt him acting different idk 💔
sometimes whenever we r in vc my friend shows their chats w the bot to me and i was like "oh ok" i never thought much of it until it got to a point (the ranting point) that i genuinely thought this was messed up 😭😭😭 like my friend told me that he genuinely felt uncomfortable of how excessive their use of the chatbot was like ME TOO.
as in they expected him to act accordingly to the chatbot, yk how it is programmed to keep you chatting, so the bot is sort of like an enabler? ok idk what im saying but basically the way the bot is an enabler so much so that their perception of him, their expectations for him as a friend or wtv, and how he treats them in general are just so distorted yk.
when i heard abt this i was initially weirded out at first, cause why not just talk to the person. now im just thinking it's so fucked up 💔 like ai almost ruined a friendship
their friendship got worse but they don't talk that much which is good for both of them. my friend has their own fg and we also talk a lot. while he has his own fg as well
so yeah 🤤

When Swiss cardiologist Thomas F. Lüscher attended an international symposium in Turin, Italy, last summer, he encountered an unusual “attendee:” Suzanne, Chat GPT’s medical “assistant.” Suzanne’s developers were eager to demonstrate to the specialists how well their medical chatbot worked, and they asked the cardiologists to test her.
An Italian cardiology professor told the chatbot about the case of a 27-year-old patient who was taken to his clinic in unstable condition. The patient had a massive fever and drastically increased inflammation markers. Without hesitation, Suzanne diagnosed adult-onset Still’s disease. “I almost fell off my chair because she was right,” Lüscher remembers. “This is a very rare autoinflammatory disease that even seasoned cardiologists don’t always consider.”
Lüscher — director of research, education and development and consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Trust and Imperial College London and director of the Center for Molecular Cardiology at the University of Zürich, Switzerland — is convinced that artificial intelligence is making cardiovascular medicine more accurate and effective. “AI is not only the future, but it is already here,” he says. “AI and machine learning are particularly accurate in image analysis, and imaging plays an outsize role in cardiology. AI is able to see what we don’t see. That’s impressive.”
At the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, for instance, his team relies on AI to calculate the volume of heart chambers in MRIs, an indication of heart health. “If you calculate this manually, you need about half an hour,” Lüscher says. “AI does it in a second.”
AI-Assisted Medicine
Few patients are aware of how significantly AI is already determining their health care. The Washington Post tracks the start of the boom of artificial intelligence in health care to 2018. That’s when the Food and Drug Administration approved the IDx-DR, the first independent AI-based diagnostic tool, which is used to screen for diabetic retinopathy. Today, according to the Post, the FDA has approved nearly 700 artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled medical devices.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is considered the worldwide leader in implementing AI for cardiovascular care, not least because it can train its algorithms with the (anonymized) data of more than seven million electrocardiograms (ECG). “Every time a patient undergoes an ECG, various algorithms that are based on AI show us on the screen which diagnoses to consider and which further tests are recommended,” says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, director of the Mayo Clinic’s Cardiovascular Health Clinic. “The AI takes into account all the factors known about the patient, whether his potassium is high, etc. For example, we have an AI-based program that calculates the biological age of a person. If the person in front of me is [calculated to have a biological age] 10 years older than his birth age, I can probe further. Are there stressors that burden him?”
Examples where AI makes a sizable difference at the Mayo Clinic include screening ECGs to detect specific heart diseases, such as ventricular dysfunction or atrial fibrillation, earlier and more reliably than the human eye. These conditions are best treated early, but without AI, the symptoms are largely invisible in ECGs until later, when they have already progressed further...
Antioniades’ team at the University of Oxford’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine analyzed data from over 250,000 patients who underwent cardiac CT scans in eight British hospitals. “Eighty-two percent of the patients who presented with chest pain had CT scans that came back as completely normal and were sent home because doctors saw no indication for a heart disease,” Antioniades says. “Yet two-thirds of them had an increased risk to suffer a heart attack within the next 10 years.” In a world-first pilot, his team developed an AI tool that detects inflammatory changes in the fatty tissues surrounding the arteries. These changes are not visible to the human eye. But after training on thousands of CT scans, AI learned to detect them and predict the risk of heart attacks. “We had a phase where specialists read the scans and we compared their diagnosis with the AI’s,” Antioniades explains. “AI was always right.” These results led to doctors changing the treatment plans for hundreds of patients. “The key is that we can treat the inflammatory changes early and prevent heart attacks,” according to Antioniades.
The British National Health Service (NHS) has approved the AI tool, and it is now used in five public hospitals. “We hope that it will soon be used everywhere because it can help prevent thousands of heart attacks every year,” Antioniades says. A startup at Oxford University offers a service that enables other clinics to send their CT scans in for analysis with Oxford’s AI tool.
Similarly, physician-scientists at the Smidt Heart Institute and the Division of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles use AI to analyze echograms. They created an algorithm that can effectively identify and distinguish between two life-threatening heart conditions that are easy to overlook: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and cardiac amyloidosis. “These two heart conditions are challenging for even expert cardiologists to accurately identify, and so patients often go on for years to decades before receiving a correct diagnosis,” David Ouyang, cardiologist at the Smidt Heart Institute, said in a press release. “This is a machine-beats-man situation. AI makes the sonographer work faster and more efficiently, and it doesn’t change the patient experience. It’s a triple win.”
Current Issues with AI Medicine
However, using artificial intelligence in clinical settings has disadvantages, too. “Suzanne has no empathy,” Lüscher says about his experience with Chat GPT. “Her responses have to be verified by a doctor. She even says that after every diagnosis, and has to, for legal reasons.”
Also, an algorithm is only as accurate as the information with which it was trained. Lüscher and his team cured an AI tool of a massive deficit: Women’s risk for heart attacks wasn’t reliably evaluated because the AI had mainly been fed with data from male patients. “For women, heart attacks are more often fatal than for men,” Lüscher says. “Women also usually come to the clinic later. All these factors have implications.” Therefore, his team developed a more realistic AI prognosis that improves the treatment of female patients. “We adapted it with machine learning and it now works for women and men,” Lüscher explains. “You have to make sure the cohorts are large enough and have been evaluated independently so that the algorithms work for different groups of patients and in different countries.” His team made the improved algorithm available online so other hospitals can use it too...
[Lopez-Jimenez at the Mayo Clinic] tells his colleagues and patients that the reliability of AI tools currently lies at 75 to 93 percent, depending on the specific diagnosis. “Compare that with a mammogram that detects breast tumors with an accuracy of 85 percent,” Lopez-Jimenez says. “But because it’s AI, people expect 100 percent. That simply does not exist in medicine.”
And of course, another challenge is that few people have the resources and good fortune to become patients at the world’s most renowned clinics with state-of-the-art technology.
What Comes Next
“One of my main goals is to make this technology available to millions,” Lopez-Jimenez says. He mentions that Mayo is trying out high-tech stethoscopes to interpret heart signals with AI. “The idea is that a doctor in the Global South can use it to diagnose cardiac insufficiency,” Lopez-Jimenez explains. “It is already being tested in Nigeria, the country with the highest rate of genetic cardiac insufficiency in Africa. The results are impressively accurate.”
The Mayo Clinic is also working with doctors in Brazil to diagnose Chagas disease with the help of AI reliably and early. “New technology is always more expensive at the beginning,” Lopez-Jimenez cautions, “but in a few years, AI will be everywhere and it will make diagnostics cheaper and more accurate.”
And the Children’s National Hospital in Washington developed a portable AI device that is currently being tested to screen children in Uganda for rheumatic heart disease, which kills about 400,000 people a year worldwide. The new tool reportedly has an accuracy of 90 percent.
Both Lopez-Jimenez and Lüscher are confident that AI tools will continue to improve. “One advantage is that a computer can analyze images at 6 a.m. just as systematically as after midnight,” Lüscher points out. “A computer doesn’t get tired or have a bad day, whereas sometimes radiologists overlook significant symptoms. AI learns something and never forgets it.”

Note:
Okay, so I'm definitely not saying that everything with AI medicine will go right, and there won't be any major issues. That's definitely not the case (the article talks about some of those issues). But regulation around medicines is generally pretty tight, and
And if it goes right, this could be HUGE for disabled people, chronically ill people, and people with any of the unfortunately many marginalizations that make doctors less likely to listen.
This could shave years off of the time it takes people to get the right diagnosis. It could get answers for so many people struggling with unknown diseases and chronic illness. If we compensate correctly, it could significantly reduce the role of bias in medicine. It could also make testing so much faster.
(There's a bunch of other articles about all of the ways that AI diagnoses are proving more sensitive and more accurate than doctors. This really is the sort of thing that AI is actually good at - data evaluation and science, not art and writing.)
This decade really is, for many different reasons, the beginning of the next revolution in medicine. Luckily, medicine is mostly pretty well-regulated - and of course that means very long testing phases. I think we'll begin to really see the fruits of this revolution in the next 10 to 15 years.

"Who cares if ChatGPT is a bad therapist, and a quack doctor, real therapists & doctors are worse and crazier let's look in the tags how horrible everyone's medical professionals were. The anti-AI freaks are illiterate reactionary Luddites who don't know everything in the real world sucks just as bad as AI actually"
Okay. If your doctors suck, or mistreat you, you can sue these guys for medical malpractice. The system is imperfect but if they're as egregiously bad as you all say they can experience legal consequences. They have to answer to medical boards and the justice system. You can take the fight to them and, more often than not, win or get them to settle for a whole lot of money. They can lose their reputation and clients. They can lose their license. And if they abused you or other patients, go to jail.
If ChatGPT tells your woo woo aunt to kill herself so she can become the sparkgiver of the high sphere of Nirvana or whatever sycophantic bullshit it hallucinated. Guess what. ChatGPT will keep existing. ChatGPT will send an army of lawyers at you to get you to settle for pennies. The American government, in competition with other governments for who can AI the hardest, will use a thousand dirty tricks to shield ChatGPT from the law. They can say they rolled out a new model and the new one doesn't do that anymore. They can say no reasonable person would believe an AI chatbot and that it's your relative's fault they killed themselves. They will say actually it might be your fault for not acting because by definition they had no idea this was going on, whilst maybe you and your family did. And they will keep operating in 195 countries unimpeded after that, without losing their millions of users every day.
Someone built a legal-proofed psychiatric abuse machine out there and you say "yeah, but people in real life do that too" PLEASE show me the malpractice therapist talking to 122 million people per day 24/7 365 days a year. If even just 0.1% of these conversations are about mental health (and we all know it's more). That's 122 000 people every day who are exposed to dangerous advice, the creation or enabling of delusions, and sycophantic answers from a machine who can only continue working if you give it a 20 or eventually 200$ a month subscription. Saying "this is no worse than the system we have now" is at best missing the bigger picture, at worse actively shilling for an evil world-spanning psychosis-inducing machine.

The narrative surrounding AI is that people will be “left behind” unless they adopt it ASAP. How is AI going to revolutionize education? How is it going to transform agriculture? How is it going to make logistics a million times smarter? Almost every sector is being faced with the proposition that they should jump on the AI train or risk getting left behind.
To my frustration, rather than having concerted, critical, and honest conversations around who benefits from this technology—and why and how—we’ve been sold the idea that it’s inevitable, and we better figure out how to make use of it, to deal with it as best we can.
I could see some approaches to AI being more punitive, like “I will do this and this if you use AI” [...] [but] I really wanted to approach my students as empowered agents of their own learning and to express to them, in the best way that I could at the time, what my reservations are. Not just with the tool in a technical sense and how it, as many people have confirmed, is much more like a stochastic parrot than it is something that learns or that is cognitive.
Beyond that, there is the larger “assemblage” of AI that enables these systems to run in the first place. Since I’m an environmental studies professor, it became clear that a lot of those pieces were an entire material world of energy, water, and other resources; of labor undervalued and exploited. And there’s the racialized and encoded assumptions that emanate through the texts upon which these chatbots are trained.

When I'm struggling not to return to Character AI, I watch this video. I am so grateful to the creator. He summarizes the social problems with AI in a succinct and genuinely horrifying way while remaining compassionate throughout. There are many environmental and artistic issues with AI too of course, but this video really drives home the way that AI enhances and enables isolation, allowing us to essentially pour love down the drain instead of into other people while simultaneously feeding our most unethical desires if we have them, and intensifying these desires to the point of absurdity.
I hope this will help people who are struggling with the same thing. I really don't want to talk to a human person some days, but if that means I spend the day alone, I hope I have the strength to do so. An AI chatbot is actually NOT better than being alone. It's worse.
CW: discussion of some of the most horrible things people do with chatbots, including ALL kinds of violence
youtube
"Interpersonal AI chatbots represent a very intense escapism that revolves around ficophilic faux-intimacy and artificial attachments."
"What have we done to get here? Why have people turned to this? How could we let this happen? Why have we let social media companies, corporations, and conglomerates rip people away from society like this? Why have we let people become atomized to this extent? Answering these questions is simple but not easy. The mechanisms of endless technological progress are no more adjustable than the Earth's spin, and the propagation of this technology, this harbinger of isolation, could only be slowed by a complete overthrow of the capitalist system."
