Hierarchy and page structure

Before starting to experiment with the page structure of my outcome, I have decided to research the hierarchy and how we read pages. This will give me a refresher on how my audience will interpret information, allowing me to create an outcome that is easy to navigate. By using hierarchy I can convey the information clearly without room for misinterpretation.

How we read a page

Western audiences start looking for information in section A, then move on to section B before finally looking at section C (Ambrose and Harris, 2015, p. 80). Based on this diagram, I will place the start of my narrative in section A before moving to section B for the middle then C for the end of my narrative. This will make it easy to follow my narrative.

According to Ambrose and Harris (2015, p.101), there are two methods to creating hierarchy:

Typographical - Can be formed by using different sizes and heavier weights to place emphasis on titles and headings.

Positional - The text is set at the top of the page with large space around it to draw more attention that the main body of text.

Positional hierarchy will make the information content of my zine easier to read and understand. However, to show the change of emotion in my conversations it will be more effective to use a typographical hierarchy because it will allow me to change the tone by using a bigger and bolder font, or making it softer by using a thinner font.

4 examples of how to create hierarchy with in a page arw:

Neutral - This is using columns to make the text legible but all the text is the same size and weight. The reader will naturally read information from the top left to bottom right (Ambrose and Harris, 2008, p.39)

Position - Using a lone heading or a separate sentence on one page will draw attention to it (Ambrose and Harris, 2008, p.39). This creates a break in the main layout, making it appear more interesting and giving the reader a chance to breathe

Position and size - Making text larger and placing space between it and the main body of text, will draw the audiences attention to it (Ambrose and Harris, 2008, p.39). This will make it easy for titles and headlines to be read first, giving the audience an introduction into the subject.

Position, size and emphasis - Adding extra emphasis to text by giving it a higher weight will place it higher in the hierarchy (Ambrose and Harris, 2008, p.39).

Using these examples will create a base for my hierarchy. This will allow me to experiment further to develop the hierarchy to a concise and clear information layout.
