Speechless Says It All

Another college + teacher AU

Carlos was never good at words. He was good at numbers. Numbers never changed in their meanings. Words were worthless to him. That’s why he taught science, not English. He didn’t care for words because in his experience, they meant nothing. 

Half way through Carlos’ sixth year of teaching, the campus announced that a new language teacher was joining their team. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. All of the language teachers at the university were stuck up and looked down on the other departments.

Begrudgingly, Carlos made his way to the teacher’s lounge to greet the new teacher and get a feel for them. He wasn’t sure what to expect but it wasn’t to find the new guy sitting alone near the window. He turned to one of the math teachers standing nearby.

“What’s up with him?”

“No clue.” She shrugged. “He won’t talk to anyone. Just keeps writing in his notebook.”

“What does he teach exactly?”

“Dunno. He’s isn’t bad looking though.”

Carlos looks back over at the stranger. She was right. Carlos could tell he was tall, even when he was sitting. He had a shock of long blonde hair that was clasped at the nape of his neck with a purple scrunchie. His hair isn’t much darker from him pale skin. But what really caught his eye were the tattoos peaking out from the collar of the purple dress shirt. The man looks up at Carlos and he caught sight of deep seemingly endless eyes. A bright blush spreads across the man’s cheeks and ducks his head quickly. 

Carlos bites his bottom lip and felt bad for staring. Maybe he should apologize for staring. Good a time as any to introduce himself. He makes his way over and clears his throat softly. The man looks up at him, his face still red.

“Hi. Um, my name is Carlos. I teach chemistry over in the STEM building. I’m sorry I was staring at you just now.”

The man gives a small smile before scribbling something down and gesturing to the seat beside him before handing over the notebook.

Hello. My name is Cecil Palmer. I’m afraid I cannot verbally answer you, as I cannot speak. I am the new American Sign Language teacher.

It read in neat elegant handwriting. Carlos looks up at him. It all made sense now. Cecil pulls the notebook back across and writes something down, tapping the pen against his chin before writing something else and sliding the notebook back over.

I can tell you have questions. You have a very readable face. You can ask. I promise I won’t get offended......

By the way, I’m not sure if you know this, but you have a really nice voice. Your students are lucky to get to listen to it every day.

This time it was Carlos who blushed. “Are you flirting with me, Mr. Palmer?” He asked with a small smile.

Cecil gives a small grin and shrugs.Carlos chuckles softly. 

“Yeah I have a few questions if you don’t mind.”

Cecil waves his hand in a ‘go ahead’ gesture.

“Do you have vocal cords at all?”

Cecil shakes his head. 

“Were you born without them?”

Cecil nods.

“Do you think you’d have time to teach me ASL?” He finds himself asking before he could stop himself. “If not, that’s fine. Don’t worry about it.” He adds quickly.

Cecil’s face lights up and he nods quickly, making his pony tail flop around a bit. 

We could start Friday at seven?

“It’s a date.” Carlos smiles.
