One 82-year-old woman, who wore pajamas with holes in them because she didn’t want to spend money on new ones, didn’t realize she had given Republicans more than $350,000 while living in a 1,000 square-foot Baltimore condo since 2020. By the time a Taiwanese immigrant from California passed away from lung cancer this year at age 80, she had given away more than $180,000 to Trump’s campaign and a litany of other Republican candidates – writing letters to candidates apologizing for not getting donations to them on time because she was going into heart surgery. She had only $250 in her bank account when she died, leaving her family scrambling to cover the cost of her funeral. And a 78-year-old, a widow who limited showers to save on her water bill and canceled her long-term care insurance, didn’t understand why the retirement savings her husband had left her was dwindling so quickly. After CNN reached out to her family, they learned that the woman gave more than $200,000 in donations to Democratic political groups and candidates. The federal government has gone after non-political companies for similar tactics, such as making false statements in ads or making them seem as if they were written directly to the recipient. But regulators have done little to stop fundraisers from using misleading and deceptive advertisements to target vulnerable donors. And the lawmakers who experts say would need to act to protect consumers at both the state and federal levels are the same ones benefiting from the current fundraising machines.

She fucked them both.
Smoke and Stack.
Seducing the twin brothers was easy, but confusing at the start.
She met Stack first. The gold in his teeth gleamed in the light of the Sunset Café, one of the most popular Black and Tan clubs in the Bronzeville section of Chicago. Lena Blackwell worked behind the bar instead of the floor, where jam packed circular tables faced an at- capacity dance floor moving to the sounds of the latest jazz band snazzed up in tuxedos.
Although the Sunset Café advertised itself as a supper club and a popular music venue, people along the stroll knew it was a higher class speakeasy. Unlike other clandestine establishments with secret code words whispered to get in and concealed entrances to deceive law enforcement and politicians, the Sunset owners paid off low-salaried policeman to look away. Their mob ties kept money in the right pockets to warn of raids and shakedowns from other gangsters. People wanted liquor and any other spirits they could get their hands on in a city that was supposed to be as dry as the Sahara.
Stack slithered over to the far end of the long polished mahogany table with a toothpick wedged between his gums. For over twenty minutes, he rapped to her while she tried to keep the prohibited drinks flowing.
"You should come work for me," he said, sizing her up with blatant lust in his bold brown eyes.
"I'm not a whore for you to put on the stroll, mister. Order another drink or leave me be."
He gave her a crooked grin with his sexy lips, then admired her perfectly coiffed hairdo styled with pin curls and slathered in Sweet Honey Brown pomade. Lena cut him to the quick.
"I know a pimp when I see one," she snapped, mixing drinks for one of the female servers.
"I ain't mean it like that baby. This is a legit business proposition. I'ma go back home and open a juke. I need a talented drink mixer such as yoself."
His delta accent was raspy and thick like overcooked grits. He was one of them sorry souls who migrated from the dirty south. She wondered if his feelings got hurt when he discovered the north was no different than the low down red necks he ran away from.
"Mmm hmm," she said, rolling her eyes.
"I'm serious. Think about it. Lemme have some cold water," he said.
Lena reached down into a false shelf and poured Stack some high grade illegal moonshine. She slid the glass to him and he guzzled it down.
"Stack!"
Lena tilted her head to see the caller.
Well, damn.
The head of the Bronzeville syndicate gestured toward Stack. Ernie Miller, the Black godfather of the south side, was wide in the gut and built low to the ground like a bulldog. A dangerous cat, who carried a switchblade known to cut throats on a whim.
Stack slid a fat wad of cash out of his pocket and laid a crisp twenty on the counter.
"Keep the change for your tip," he said, winking at her.
The change from his tab would cover her rent for two months.
He stuffed the rest of his money in his pocket where a shiny set of brass knuckles dangled and left the bar to join Ernie. For the first time, Lena took notice of Stack's finely tailored brown suit and the sharp creases in his pants. He had syndicate connections. A gangster. And a good tipper. She watched him enter a secret door in the back and never saw him again that night.
Two days later, as she started work at the bar, she spotted Stack nursing a drink at the far end, listening to an older barfly chat away to him. He drained the last of what was in his glass and Lena offered him some cold water.
Stack looked at her in confusion and shook his head in the negative.
She worked her shift, expecting Stack to hit on her at the bar again, like most men did.
He didn't.
"Cat got your tongue tonight, mister?" she teased, wiping down a spill near his arm from another patron.
He stared at her and then turned away to watch chorus girls tear up the Black Bottom dance in short dresses. Maybe she'd been too curt for him last time, and he took the hint. Ironically, that made her take a sudden interest.
He was tall, fine-looking, and a sharp dresser. She wondered if he smelled as good as he looked. Her eyes stayed on him until he wandered off to take an empty seat next to Ernie in a far left corner with some other broad-shouldered men.
"What was he drinking?" she asked another bartender.
Max, a reed-thin high yella man with a nasally voice, glanced at her.
"A South Side and the last glass was some Smoke."
"Eww, he likes that Smoke shit? That could kill him," she said, crinkling her nose.
"Them ex soldiers like that cloudy fuel alcohol."
"How you know he's an ex soldier?"
Max held out his hand and wiggled it.
"His hands. They shake a little bit. Lotta them war boys came back messed up."
Lena couldn't imagine the jovial man she met the other night acting shell-shocked. She reached under the bar and grabbed some gin. Adding some lime, sugar, and a bit of mint, she made a fresh glass of South Side.
"I'll be right back," she said.
Her heels click-clacked on the floor and she passed several raucous tables enjoying the floor show. Ernie had stepped away to talk to some people two tables over. She placed the South Side in front of the ex soldier.
"Thought you might enjoy this better than that rot gut you were drinking earlier," she said.
He glanced down at the drink and a slow smile raised the corners of his lips. No gold on his teeth. She studied his features, his hair, and the large build of his body. This had to be the same man.
"What they call you around here?" she asked.
"Smoke."
"Not Stack?"
He showed more teeth and some dimples.
"No. Just Smoke."
He had a twinkle in his eye and he chuckled softly.
"Where you from?" she asked.
"Mississippi."
"You really opening a juke down there?"
He squinted at her, but before he could answer, Ernie returned.
"Let's go," Ernie said, grabbing his coat.
The soldier stood and brushed against her. She looked up into his eyes and shivered. He reached down for the drink she prepared for him and sipped it down in front of her.
"Thank you," he said, handing the glass back to her.
She clasped it with both hands, feeling woozy by the scent of his cologne. He grabbed his suit coat, and she glimpsed the gun in a holster strapped to him.
"Excuse me," he said, his voice soft like cotton.
Lena stepped aside and touched her forehead. The man had her breaking out in a sweat.
Two more men caught up to them near the bar and that's when she gasped, seeing double. The man who called himself Smoke greeted his twin brother Stack. Lena returned to her post and Stack peeled back his lips, showing her gold in his mouth. She ended up grinning, and he leaned an elbow on the bar.
"You look even more beautiful when you smile," Stack said.

Staring at them both, she could tell they were physically identical, but the personalities, their auras…so opposite.
One thing was for sure, seeing them together…she was smitten.
And she wanted them both.

I’m not the first to write something like this but here’s my spin on shifter!141.
*****
They had spent too long in their bestial forms. Time feels different when the wolf takes over, easier to lose track of and even harder to remember their human lives. By the time one of them remembers the house in the woods and its many acres that still needs a final payment under a fake name it’s too late.
They look on from the tree line, taking note of the changes made by the new owner. A budding flower garden in front of the house, well kept and just starting to show its spring colors. Around back a large vegetable patch was still green, nothing yet ready to harvest. The exterior had a fresh coat of paint and small repairs had been made. A single faded blue truck rumbled up the long and winding driveway. That’s when they first laid eyes upon you.
—————
“Abandoned, Selling As Is” was what the advertisement had read. No one else had wanted the plot of land hours away from civilization. For you, though, it was perfect. Somewhere to start over, to be alone and relearn who you are.
The rooms still held the previous owner’s belongings. Everything had been left untouched as if they just vanished one day. All men, you assumed, just from the sparse decor and the clothes left behind. Military, maybe, from how the beds were made with their sheets tucked into hospital corners. Paranoid loners, possibly even doomsday preppers, was another guess you made after discovering a gun safe hidden behind a false wall under the stairs.
It was almost a game, once a day trying a hand full of combinations to see if any worked. Something mindless to fill an unoccupied moment of time. That’s when you really started going through the papers and books left behind. Looking for any clues at what the code might be. A notepad left on the small hallway table is where you scribbled down all the combinations that hadn’t worked, in a meager attempt to not repeat yourself. A small mystery to add a little life to your loneliness.
At night is when things really come to life this far out into the wilderness. In the early days of owning the property, before you were able to get the satellite internet set up, you’d spend the evenings watching and listening on the back porch. Deer were the most common, using the wide open expanse of a backyard as a place to graze in the evenings. Owls silently swooping down on field mice before retreating to the trees once more. Coyotes, crickets, and night birds made a symphony of nature most nights.
The most exciting were the wolves. You could always hear them howling in the distance, calling to one another. They weren’t like the coyotes that cackled over one another in attempt to sound larger or more numerous than they actually were. These were direct calls and responses. Their vocalizations sounding almost melancholy, as if they were yearning for something that seemed just out of reach.
It was a quiet night when you finally decided to respond to their calls. The evening had been spent making supply lists for your trek into the nearest town in the morning. A large cooler had been thrown into the bed of your truck to store items intended for the refrigerator and deep freezer.
You sat on the tailgate, listening to the night song that seemed to encapsulate the peaceful valley you now owned. A celebratory drink held in one hand and a small, proud smile graces your lips. Your house was starting to feel like a real home and that was definitely worth celebrating.
The wolves that you had grown fond of, yet had never seen, were starting up. Your favorite night song. A melody that you could listen to for hours. One you had listened to for hours.
Four. You could make out four distinct calls at this point. Two were more vocal than others, their tones more playful. One was definitely the pack leader. His call the first and last each night, like a command or an order. And one was rarely heard, usually only short responses and never as loud as the others. But the valley always carried their calls to you, teaching you their voices. They were faceless friends in your solitude.
So you call out into the night. The long howl a poor imitation of theirs, straining your vocal cords.
The night grows still. All goes quiet. As the silence passes for a beat, then another, your smile slowly falters and fades. A pang of disappointment and a small bubble of guilt at interrupting their conversation.
All animals, even fierce predators, could be skittish. You worried that your call had scared them off, ruining your chances of ever spotting them. With a hop you jump off the tailgate, slamming it shut in frustration. Heavy feet stomping all the way onto the porch and inside. You could only hope they hadn’t heard your foolishness and that something else has quieted them.
The night remains silent as you crawl into bed. The night song ending early and sewing sadness into your dreams.
But they had heard you.
Your distinctly human howling calling to a dormant part of their minds. They remembered themselves. They remembered their life in the valley. They remembered the house where their human lives were lived.
And they were coming home.

MAKING A WOMAN OUTTA YOU.
in two swift motions, you refolded the pamphlet and shoved it into the large pocket of your purse — letting the sleek paper crumble and tear. your grandmother norrice sat beside you, scanning through her copy of the same pamphlet and grinning softly. “you new adults are lucky,” the elder had said, removing her thin-wire, rectangular framed reading glasses, “it’s so good for young women to attend these type of things; to keep their hearts and minds pure. if i had such opportunity at your age, i would certainly have my life together.”
your relationship with the church had always been strained, and belief in god, at least the way your grandmother spoke about him, never came naturally to you.
annoyedly, “grandma . .. your life is fine.” norrice gave a small shake of her head and pushed her grandma-glasses back into place. “my life could be better. i would have done more,” she said in a wobbly voice. grandma norrice had fallen pregnant with your father at the young age of sixteen, and since her parents ( your greats ) were opposed to abortion, considering such action immoral, grandma norrice was forced to adult much quicker. “look. look. come look at this,” showing off the pamphlet, pointing a wrinkly finger over a bolded textbook — “start over. rededicate yourself as a virgin,” she read.
grandma norrice lowered the pamphlet into her lap. “isn’t that amazing?” you sighed deeply, swallowing down the hysterical laugh that almost left your throat. grandma norrice could feel the aggravation that seamed off of your body. “hey . ..” again, she pulled those thin-glasses off the bridge of her nose. she placed a cold hand onto your forearm and squeezed lovingly, “i’m only asking you for one. one session, hmm?”
and on: “you go in there and you listen. you show up for yourself, right?” grandma norrice reached and hooked a finger under your chin, tilting your head toward her. “you go in there and confess your defiance. you go in there and pledge yourself to be pure again in the eyes of the lord-“ there had been a misunderstanding between you and your grandmother norrice.
backstory: grandma norrice likes to keep her receipts. all of them. every last one. she had folders upon folders that divided her receipts by year and frequently shopped stores. she considers her an organizer, but she’s a hoarder . .. of paper. anyways, one day, way back when, she had read an advertisement in the town’s newspaper, that pretty much said: ‘good-day people of mississippi! make money off your receipts! one receipt for one penny!‘ the company had been active many years later, sending grandma norrice rolls and rolls of pretty brown pennies, but as the world aged and technology progressed — the company died.
and for some reason, even though she’s been told time and time again that that company had no longer been operating, she still collects and saves — waiting to reach her goal amount and cash in her receipts. she’s nearing a thousand receipts; it was like playing bingo and scratching lottery tickets for her. separating those receipts into their categories gave her joy.
and the short version of why you are here: as she was cleaning out a reusable shopping bag, she had seen a receipt. excited to store it where it belonged, her misty eyes scanned the slip of paper for a date. and though she found the date, she had also seen: CRYSTAL CONDOMS EXTRA VALUE , 4.99. a box of condoms was bought.
no, you weren’t sexually active . .. . but you were planning to be with this guy. and no, he wasn’t just any guy. you’ve been talking to him for a while now and he, surprisingly, has checked off every box in your ‘my type’ list. for the last four months it’s been cute dates and sweet hangouts, and after that makeout session last weekend, you were sure you were ready for it. you wanted to do it with him, badly. so bad that you started carrying two condoms in your purse, like a highschool kid, anticipating the next meet-up.
“-you must desire to re-purity.” you have not had sex yet. “you must desire to be clean.” hearing the low clacks of flat-heels, you turned from your grandmother with a low groan — the quick distraction needed. a woman, looking around your age, had been coming down the hall, giddy and with a greedy look in her blue eyes. her blonde hair, seeming freshly curled, had bounced up and down on her shoulders.
you let your eyes stroll downward; seeing the pamphlet. her copy a nice, pastel green color. a more recent edition. and then came another young woman, she too hurried down the hall with a copy of the pamphlet. “-you need guidance,” your grandmother norrice had still been speaking ( to herself ). “do not let your desires lead you astray.” and as more young women came filing down the hallway, she silenced herself.
“i believe that your time has come for a cleanse,” grandma norrice said, watching as the duos and trios of giggling, beautifully polished young women gathered at the large, double dark-oak doors. she patted your knee twice, telling you to hurry up and along. “i will be right here waiting for you, okay? right here. go on now, hurry in.”

the basement of the church was cold, even in the middle of summer. the pearly fluorescent lights gave the room an almost sterile feel, a stark contrast to the warmth of the sunday service that was held upstairs much earlier. the chairs were arranged in a tight circle, creating an intimacy that felt more like confinement. you made your way down the creaky staircase, stopping at the bottom landing and staring at the misguided women.
the air smelled like old books and faint incense, but none of it brought the comfort your grandmother said that the church would. if you turn back now, you could hide in the bathroom — since whoever was leading this thing wasn’t in yet . .. . but you would have to pass your grandmother to camp out in the bathroom.
you dropped your shoulders with a deep sigh.
you clutched the strap of your purse and eased into the light — careful and observant. you settled down in between two white women who were holding hand-held flip mirrors and fluffing their shiny hair. honey blonde and deep brunette. your gaze shifted then and your curious eyes landed on two other women; spanish women who were re-applying their gloss. the air was heavy, thick with an uncomfortable silence.
one session, your grandmother’s words echoed in your mind: “you need guidance. do not let your desires lead you astray.” maybe if you had had sex, this could be useful. if only she were here to see all of these women in their makeup and neat hairstyles and sitting so proper to show off what they have in the front — and as a slam sounded, the women jumped startled and readied themselves . .. . their heads bowed low in what looked like guilt or shame. fake guilt and fake shame.
“welcome back ladies . .. .” the priest, father charlie mayhew, now stood in the center of the circle, his hands clasped in front of him like he was leading a sermon, but there was an edge to his presence that made your skin prickle. eerie, he was. “i applaud each of you for returning this afternoon. i applaud you for wanting better for yourself, and for trusting me to guide you through this process.” he was a tall man, with a face that was just on the edge of a smile, but never quite reaching for warmth.
his collar seemed to cling too tightly around his neck, and his eyes darted around the room, landing on each young woman, one by one; hungrily, before lingering on you for a beat longer than comfortable — his expression unreadable. but then, one corner of his lips tipped upward. the honey blonde at one side of you noticed and for a second, she considered tackling you. but she took a deep breath in and out. in and out.
“thank you for joining us this afternoon,” he said, his voice deep and smooth, his attention making you shrink slightly in your seat — wanting to disappear. father charlie fashioned a calming, slightly condescending grin on his face.
the other women turned to look at you, some with curiosity, some with attitude, but all with fake sympathy. “why don’t you introduce yourself?” his tone was warm, but something about it felt performative, rehearsed. the tall priest took two big steps back and gestured toward the center of the center.
you remained seated — shaking your head no. “i don’t plan on comin’ back, so . .. .” your fingers twisting in your lap, “i don’t think there’s a need to, y’know . .. . know me. know my name. why i’m here.” you finished with a shy chuckle. no one laughed with you. no one cracked a smile.
a bushy brow of his lifted a bit. he noted how sure of yourself you seemed after that statement. father charlie decided to try again: “please, come. introduce yourself.” all eyes were on you . .. . and you felt like a teenager again about to give a solo-project presentation. “i don’t . .. .” a scoff and another nervous chuckle. “there’s no reason for that. like i said, this is an in and out kind of thing for me.”
father charlie never had to ask twice. young women, such as those around him, moved whenever he needed something done. they moved as quick as possible, they never wanted him to lift a finger. any and every favor was complete without complaint or hesitation. though he never had to ask twice, for you, he’d give it a third go. “this is a safe environment. what is shared here will stay here. right in this circle. our small community.” as father charlie spoke, he stepped along said circle. the women smiled up at him as he passed, their hearts fluttering and their stomachs knotting.
when he landed, standing right before you, he held out his hand. “grab onto me . .. . and come forth.” his voice smooth, almost hypnotic. you felt the weight of the gazes from the other women — some surprised, their faces drawn in confusion and puzzlement. no one had ever hesitated to take father charlie’s hand. you could see the tension in their bodies, the way they sat stiffly, chests and shoulders leaned in, they were practically on the edge of their seats . .. . wondering if you’d keep denying the man or finally give into him.
but, they all swore that they’d rather be you right now; looking up at father charlie as he offered his beautiful hand.
“grab . .. . onto me.” fifth time.
you took a dekko at his hand — thinking.
and when your hand fell onto his, a collective sigh had gone up. father charlie clasped his other hand on top of yours and gave a pat; a pat that said: thank you, gorgeous.
you kept your hand in his as you took to your feet. father charlie’s palm felt nice in yours; surprisingly soft — he walked you to the circle’s center and released your hand, his fingers dragging against yours as he parted. “there is no need to be shy.”
you were annoyed.
“my name’s y/n, ‘nd, well . .. . i’m here ‘cause of my,” you cleared your throat, then trailed off abruptly, “my grandma.” the women stared amongst themselves for a second and then looked up at you again. you raised your chin softly, catching a glimpse of father charlie beyond you. not hovering, but towering perfectly. “it’s silly, really,” you had told the group, folding your arms over your chest protectively, “she does this thing . .. a-this weird thing, where she .. . like, keeps all of her receipts?”
you heard a soft hum come from behind your back. you wanted to look around, to look at father charlie, but you kept yourself from doing so. “it’s a long story . .. well, not exactly, no. it’s actually the shortest story in history, really-“ fast paced babbling. purely from the anxious energy that coursed and spun throughout your body. for some people, their brains lock up and they have trouble thinking of things to say. for you, being jittery filled your mind with thoughts, along with an urge to say them all. right now. as fast as you can. “-when she was much much younger and livin’ in mississippi, she was reading a newspaper . .. .”
and you rambled. and you rambled. and you rambled.
“‘nd she thinks that i’m having sex, which-“ you laughed at the thought, “-which i am not. i’m not.” directed to the women. “seriously, i’m not.” was directed to father charlie. “i’m here for no reason, honestly. i’ve been forced here on an assumption. a silly assumption. i’ve been carryin’ ‘round condoms, but that’s all-“ the embarrassing statement caught you off-guard.
with a hand, father charlie gestured toward your chair — clearly telling you to sit the fuck down. you hurried back. you dropped down and quickly kicked your purse underneath the seat; as if to hide the condoms that were already tucked in a zipper pocket.
“at least you’re having protective sex,” the brunette whispered over, not even facing you. you almost choked on nothing: “no, i’m not,” you answered too quickly. that didn’t sound right. “i-fuck. no, i’m not havin’ sex. but if i was, i would be protected,” you corrected. “that’s what makes this whole thing hilarious. i’m still a virgin.” the brunette looked at you. “then why are you here?” your shoulders slumped, “did . .. . did you not hear me?” you asked, pointing to the circle’s center. the brunette said no, “would you listen to yourself talk about your grandma collecting receipts? we all were falling asleep, sweetie. i was so tuned out, which never happens here.”
you shifted your weight a bit, turning your body toward her.
“wait, so why are you here, seriously?” she tilted her head.
you opened your mouth to speak and heard a finger-snap. “ladies . .. .” father charlie urged. he clasped his hands in front of him and continued, “you are here because of your struggle. each of you struggle. struggle with the desires of the flesh. desires that pull you away from god.“ he lifted a hand toward you, “she travels with condoms. can anyone tell me what that says about her?”
two arms had gone up and you so desperately wanted to leave.
father charlie called on tabitha, her loose waves pulled up into a high ponytail. her eyes sparkled. “it is clear that she is eager to engage in sexual intercourse with a man. it is on her mind and she is desperate for it. but if such dangerous thought continues to linger, she will eventually take action.”
you scoffed, “i am not ‘eager’ or ‘desperate’. i jus’ wan’a-“ father charlie raised a hand, shushing you from going any further. your lips shut, disappointedly. “that is correct, thank you, tabitha.” and she felt her bones rattled.
father charlie’s eyes slid back to you, his voice dropping into something softer, more personal. “these desires . .. these thoughts, like tabitha had stated, they are dangerous. but luckily, they can be controlled. with the right guidance.”
you felt the heat of his attention again, the way his words seemed to be directed specifically at you, though there were ten other women sitting in this circle. you lowered your gaze, trying to find comfort in your lap, but the room seemed to close in around you.
“lust,” he continued, stepping closer to where you sat, “is the most powerful weapon the devil has. it twists the human mind, makes you believe that these urges are natural.” father charlie had left the circle for a moment, their eyes following except yours. he had never left the circle before — he stuck there for every session. his hand rested on the back of your chair, and you froze. “but they are not. not one bit. they are sins. and we are here to free you from that temptation.”
“desires,” he said then, his voice dropping into a low murmur, “can be dangerous if left unchecked. they can consume you.“
a few of the women murmured, their voices barely audible. you remained silent, your heart thudding painfully in your chest. his fingers brushed against your shoulder, lightly, almost as if by accident, but you knew it wasn’t. the touch was deliberate, testing. father charlie leaned in more, pressing himself into the chair fully now. “god forgives,” his voice velvety, his hand lingering on your shoulder for a moment too long. “but only if you are truly willing to repent. to give yourself fully to him . .. .”
you stiffened, not sure if you were reacting to the feel of him or the fact that he was singling you out again.
you wanted to stand, to leave, but something kept you anchored to the chair. a combination of guilt, fear, and an unshakable sense that you should’ve never came.
father charlie moved away, continuing his slow pace around the group of beautiful women. he spoke about discipline, about submission to god’s will, about sin and repentance, but each word felt laced with something darker. something unspoken.
you glanced around the room, noticing the way the other women seemed to hang onto his every word, their eyes ogling and admiring how he carried himself. you weren’t sure what you expected from this session, but the way he spoke about desire — like it was something to be ashamed of — made you uncomfortable. sure, you had your own struggles, but was that really something that needed to be controlled like a disease?
this was something else entirely . .. . and it was confusing.
as the session dragged on, you realized that the shame you felt was from being here, in this room, where father charlie wielded his authority like a blade, cutting away at the parts of you that made you human.
at the end of the session, as the other women began to gather their things and shuffle toward the door, father charlie gestured for you to stay behind. you hesitated, but the weight of expectation pressed down on you, making it impossible to refuse.
you slung the strap over your shoulder and held the leather close, as if to comfort yourself.
and once the room was empty, he stepped to you, a smile creeping back onto his face. “thank you for sharing this afternoon. that was quite the story,” he said, his tone sickeningly sweet. “i know you said that this was a . .. . ‘one and done’, type of thing-“
you wanted to speak but nothing came out.
“but, i think we need to have a private conversation. just you and me. i can help you further. i would like to help you further, y/n.”
the bile rose in your throat, but all you could manage was a nod, the fear of what would happen if you said no silencing you. you quickly turned your back and left for the double doors.

you entered quietly, hoping not to draw attention, but the oak door creaked louder than you expected, making a few heads turn. you weren’t that late, just a few minutes, but it was enough to feel the shift in the room’s energy as you found an empty chair in the circle. the same chair you had been seated in last weekend. father charlie had made sure to leave it out.
“punctuality is important,” father charlie said smoothly, his voice breaking through the murmurs as he watched you take your seat. his smile was there, but it didn’t reach his eyes. you gave a quick nod of apology, shifting uncomfortably as you settled in, trying to brush off the feeling that all eyes were on you.
this time . .. . you were here by choice — you hadn’t told your grandmother norrice that father charlie had asked you to return. you knew that if you did, she’d throw a fit. she’d throw a damn superbowl party — it unsettled you, but at the same time, something pulled at you. maybe it was curiosity, or maybe it was the fact that you couldn’t stop thinking about how he had made you feel just by looking at you, as if he could see something in you that no one else could. whatever it was, it brought you back.
there was a distance between you and the women, a sense that you weren’t part of their world just yet. a sense that you were special, and far more important to father charlie.
“but, i am glad that you’ve decided to return.” you gave a small nod, your fingers tightening around the strap of your bag. “yeah, i . .. . i figured i’d give it another try,” you had said.
he nodded, as if he had expected nothing less. “good. very good.” father charlie smiled at you, but it wasn’t comforting. there was something behind it — something almost predatory in the way he seemed to hold his gaze on you, like he was sizing you up. then, he turned to address the group, but his words felt distant, again like they were just for show. you couldn’t focus on the session. your thoughts were too tangled, your mind too occupied with what he had said last time.
i think we need to have a private conversation.
“even if-when you don’t believe,” father charlie said, closing in behind your chair, his voice low enough that only you could hear, “god has a plan for you. you just have to let him in.”
you swallowed hard, fingers swiping along the smooth paint of your nails, unsure of what else to do. his hand found your shoulder for a second or three before he moved on, continuing his speech. the other women nodded along, their heads still bowed in what looked like submission.
as the session dragged on, you found yourself drifting in and out of the conversation, only half-listening. you weren’t here for the church, you weren’t here for god, you weren’t here for your grandmother, you weren’t here to be lectured about how your desires were dangerous if not properly controlled . .. . you were here for father charlie.
as the session wound down, the other women began to gather their things, exchanging quiet goodbyes. father charlie’s eyes followed them out, but he didn’t speak. he was waiting — waiting for them to leave, waiting for you. he caught your eye, giving you a knowing look. “stay . .. ?” he mouthed, the request felt more like a command.
tension.
when the last of the women finally left, the door closing softly behind her, the room seemed to shrink. the room felt different — charged. father charlie slowly walked over to where you sat, his presence looming larger now that it was just the two of you. his smile was still there, but it was different in this quiet space, more intense, more focused.
father charlie sat down in the chair right next to you. he scooted closer to you, grunting as he moved the chair with him — scraping it against the stone floor. his voice was soft, intimate. “i’m really glad you gave this another chance.” his dark eyes locked on yours with a strange intensity. “you know, sometimes the answers we are looking for are . .. . in places we wouldn’t expect.”
“like the basement of my grandmother’s church,” you had said mindlessly. father charlie gave you a gentle grin, showing you that he had been amused. barely. “yeah. exactly that. the basement of your grandmother’s church. but . .. . like i was saying-“ his hand brushed lightly against your arm, “-i think that you’re searching,” his voice a bit lower, like a secret was being shared. “-searching for something deeper, something that no one else can give you. i see it in you, the desire for connection.”
connection.
“i want to help you work through . .. . your urges.”
there was no mistaking it now — the way he said urges, the way his voice dipped, made it clear he wasn’t talking about faith or repentance anymore. “we all have them,” he murmured, his eyes scanning your face like he was looking for something, some sign of compliance or curiosity. “it happens.” his hand slid downward. just a little closer they went . .. . fingers grazing the back of your hand, subtle but deliberate. “i can guide you through it,” he whispered. “let me help you.”
your pulse quickened, a sense of alarm flooding through you, but there was also a need.
“you have to trust me. you have to let me in.”
“i don’t . .. know. i don’t think-“
father charlie’s smile deepened, his hand gently squeezing your forearm. “sometimes, we don’t know what we need until we find it. trust me. you’re here for a reason. god brought you back for a reason, right?”
his words hung in the air, heavy with a meaning that wasn’t lost on you.
“i don’t know,” you repeated yourself.
you tried to look away, but his hand reached out, his fingers lightly gripping your chin, forcing your gaze back to him — like he was trying to hold you in place, make you stay in this moment with him. “i know what you’ve been feeling. i know what’s pulling at you. you want to give in, yeah? to feel something . .. .”
“sometimes . .. . we’re not meant to fight it. sometimes, we’re meant to feed it.” he dropped his hand from your chin.
“but yesterday, you said . .. .”
he chuckled softly, but there was no humor in it, only a dark edge. “i know what you want. i know what your body wants, what it’s demanding from the world.” his hand moved, not to your arm this time, but to the small space between your shoulder blades. “and there’s nothing wrong with wanting and needing to feel pleasure. most times, we need personal attention to overcome and strive.
“i didn’t tell the others; but sometimes . .. . we have to allow ourselves to feel these things in order to rise above it. that’s how we control it.” his fingers slid down your back slowly. “desire can a gift — one that can bring two closer to the truth of who we are. allow me to help you feed it.”
. .. .
“are you going to let me help you now?”
. .. .
“yes.”
and he wasted no time bringing a hand up to grab the zip of your short-sleeved hoodie. he pulled down carefully, the plump cleavage of your breasts peeking. his other hand smoothed along your curly slicked back hair, “thank you,” he whispered.

and though you were prepared for something like this, the contraceptives in your purse went unused. when charlie had seen you flick it out — showing off the metallic dark green wrapper, the imprint of the condom bold — he refused, immediately: “no.” simple. flat and cold.
charlie plucked the packet from your perfectly-manicured fingers and tossed it across the floor, dark eyes boring into you. you looked at him as if he had lost his mind. just as you were about dig into the pocket for the other condom, charlie gripped your wrist; the pressure gentle but firm. “what do you mean ‘no’?” you asked — though you knew exactly what he meant.
“i have something real to give.” in other words, he would not be spilling his seed into some rubbery latex. there was no blocking him out. “i need you to feel everything. okay? you need to.” you couldn’t oppose him.
and here you were: holding onto his forearms. his arms had prodding veins for days. from his wrists to the tops of his large shoulders. he was so built, you weren’t at all expecting it. “. .. ready, angel?” you nodded down at him sweetly, hands sliding up to his flexed biceps. “wan’a be yours already. please ..” charlie had you right where he wanted you. there was something so nasty about the smirk that grew across his face, “god saved you for me . .. . wanted me to have you.”
“mm, think so?” came quiet and soft.
“know so,” charlie muttered, stroking himself messily. “i know so.” he reached down for you, carefully lining himself up with your heavenly entrance. “taste me.” his words are sweet, poison laced sugar. you kissed him, letting your eyes close as you did so.
and when he slipped inside, spongy and slimy, it was like his own personal hell. you were so much better than he could’ve imagined. charlie had gone completely silent, choking on air — like he was just punched in the gut. there’s no comparison, no feeling in the world . .. . he couldn’t form a single, coherent thought. you were gripping him just right, massaging his cock like you really were made to have him as your first. like he was made to stretch your hymen.
“fucking shhit,” charlie’s head gradually tossed itself back. he couldn’t keep his mouth shut, couldn’t keep the surprise out of his voice, couldn’t keep himself from hiccuping and mumbling your name and calling you ‘angel’. “f-fuck. fuck, fuck, hang’on, f-please . .. hang on.” charlie had to pause halfway, huffing out an overwhelmed breath. he’s drooling — he couldn’t quite fathom how amazing you felt on the inside.
you sighed, and sighed again as his nose brushed your throat, as he guided your hips — slowly and tediously, pulling you up and down. your jaw hung open desperately, toes curling with each vein he gradually dragged so rigidly along your walls. “i’ve got y-you . .. . i promise, angel. i’ve got’cha,” you were taking him so well despite the pain, making it harder to resist the urge to pound into you.
your cunt readily accepting the priest’s dick as it oozed against your insides and spreads the flame of desire.
he’s making your pussy his own; shaping your cunt, molding you into the perfect cocksleeve. pretty much carving his name into it. and he was trying his best. trying so hard to be as gentle and as slow as he could possibly be, fighting every bad thought that so tightly pulled and demanded he go deeper. charlie did well, swallowing those thoughts down . .. but it was tiring.
it was exhausting. so fucking exhausting, especially when your desperate cunt keeps sucking and swallowing him in deeper after each and every pass. charlie kissed and licked at your neck, blankly trying to distract himself — which gave nothing. your cunt would not let up. nothing would give. not like this. there was no way. there was nothing in this world strong enough to pull him away from you and your warm cunt.
charlie’s guiding your hips so slow that it was painful. he’s trying to make every thrust connect — he’s groaning and struggling to keep his dark eyes open. you're smothering his entire cock with nothing but your slippery slick, hearing the filthy clicks ring from in between your sweaty thighs — he’s so lost in the sounds of you.
you are secured to him; fingers tangled into his brunette hair, gripping strands and raking your nails along his scalp, eliciting a satisfying moan to slip past his pretty lips. you blinked away, only for a moment, and stared down at his glossy lips. covered in his spit, your toes are curling. your tummy is doing cartwheels — butterflies no longer butterflies but pterodactyls.
“y-you’re .. . .. ‘t’s so deep ..” charlie gave a gentle smile, one hand slipping up and caressing the curve of your back. “i know i am. i know. i can feel it too, angel.” your sleepy gaze remained on his smiling lips. you licked at your own, almost leaning in to capture his. “i can feel everything . .. .” and you felt fan-fucking-tastic. “everything.”
you bit back a smile.
charlie winced lowly, his thighs starting to rattle. “hurts to .. to keep goin’ this slow ..”
it felt like he was worshipping you — that you are the sacred body here, two bright candles flickering in the corner — he’s worshipping you, you’re sure of it, with tongue and teeth and cock. it’s messy, and he’s not shy, those lips that could stir a congregation with their sweetness, his golden tongue .. . “nngh-wait,” you pleaded softly. “w-wha’?”
clenching around him so tight you could feel the outline of his prominent veins, the sensitive spots along his shaft. charlie’s brows furrow in clean focus, letting out a sultry string of words, “i .. i can’t.” he's buried nose deep near the crook of your neck. “i’m sorry, angel. i can’t .. fuck, i can’t.” he softly rasped as deep brown locks of hair stick against his shiny skin. “takin’ everything in me . .. i’m tryin’, fuckk, i’m tryin’ for you-don’t wan’ it to hurt . .. .” you felt his throaty pants trail against your skin, “but i’ve gotta go harder.”
with a sheepish smile, you met his chocolate-eyed gaze, moaning a soft: “okay ..”
“y-yeah?”
your weak arms wrapped around his broad shoulders, the pads of your fingers almost rubbing against a fresh scar, “mhmm .. . do it, please.” the ghost of a smirk. charlie’s thick fingers clasped at your waist; the decorative beads printing mini dents into your brown skin. effortless, he lifted your hips and fixed himself — the feet of the chair loudly scratching the cold, stone floor. “you’re the best i’ve ever felt, angel .. . s’hot inside. s’soft.” that deep, silky whisper has your cunt quivering disgustingly. and he’s driving his hips up, fast, drilling himself into your body.
“so fuckin’ wet-“ one hand cupped the side of your face, bringing you in. you’re both panting, quick and short, breathing hot and heavy air into each other’s mouths. “pretty hole sucking me in so good . .. .” your teeth nipped at your plump lower lip, drinking him in. charlie’s hot fingers slipped underneath your waistbeads, toying with the jewellery. “so good, angel . ..”
the gel slicking back your naturally thick hair put up zero match against the heat of this basement. edges once neatly laid, were puffing up — stretched curls lifting out of place and shrinking.
“fuck-never wanna leave.” your heart continued to race at his obscene words. and you caressed his face, whispering about how good he was making you feel. he mewled at your validation, wanting to please, needing to be the best for you.
and he’s so loud, so hungry for more. with the way charlie’s long lashes flutter and his hooded eyes droop, he was so visibly pussy drunk. already nearing the edge and trying his best not to tip over. balancing on a uni-cycle on a string of the cheapest of cheap dental floss.
he could practically taste the pleasure on his tongue — release is coming quick and there was no preparing himself for it. not enough preparation in the world. the pointed tips of his ears burn with intense, searing heat.
“oh my-! oh god!”
“no-“ charlie cursed under his breath and snapped a hand over your throat, all five fingers digging into your brown skin — “-no. fuck no. you don’t call on god. you-you don’t call on him. don’t. he’s not makin’ you feel good. i am. you call on me,” he ordered, harshly. and all you can is nod and follow his direction. “call for me . .. . do it.” you’re practically speechless, nothing left from your lips yet, all that could be heard was the constant slap slap slap of slippery skin.
and his hand tightened around your neck. “come on, angel . .. say my name.” charlie’s muscled chest heaved up and down, hard. “fucking call on me.”
your hands latched onto his wrist — this new feeling, you couldn't quite describe it. it was tasty and he was peeling you apart, layer by layer. “do it. who’s makin’ you feel good? huh? who’s breakin’ you in half? .. . who’s splittin’ you the fuck open?”
“charlie!” all you can do is choke out a shrill. “you are!”
what happens next takes you by surprise — charlie locked his big burly arms under your thighs and stood up, keeping himself plugged in; nice and snug. the new position, standing, had charlie’s head spinning. he grunted loudly, and it’s a sexy guttural noise. your legs kicking and dangling in the air as he feeds your cunt inch by greedy inch, again and again. “charlie .. .” you whined, pulling at his hair.
“shiit,” and as if a switch had been flipped, hot sticky ribbons shoot right into you, spilling way into your sweet welcoming womb. you gasped, nails scratching into his large shoulders — and the feel of him letting go inside of you has you cumming as well. his panting is deep and animalistic. he held onto your shivering body tighter, his hips never faltering.
beefy arms lifting your sticky body up again, he’s back at it — pushing and eager to reach another one. “a-angel .. .” his entire body hot and heavy. “gonna fill you up again-i’ve gotta.” his brown eyes continued to grow hooded and low.
you were still trying to recover. still coming down from your first orgasm and just barely adjusting to the feel of having his previous load fucked even deeper. “‘m gonna cum again,” he warned softly — cream tearing down his trembly thighs. he’s silently babbling out more whispers and moans of your name. “givin’ you all of me .. .”
you’re flustered right away and wanting to kiss him, hungry to. but as your leaning in, the heels of your feet knocking into the back of his thighs hard, he hoists your legs over his shoulders without so much as a warning. you’re scared to fall, but he won’t let you. he promised you through shaky moans, rocking you up and down.
and you’re gonna pass out, eyes knocking in the back of your skull. your legs bobbing from the movement, you’re trapped against him — and it’s even hotter. even messier and you can’t squirm at all. charlie’s watching your face contort and scrunch and there goes his ego; shooting through the church’s roof and into space. you’re barely hanging onto his big arms and he’s feeling so good about himself. “i can’t-can’t anymore,” you cried to him.
“but you can, angel . .. .” charlie snapped. “keep takin’ it .. and let’s finish together, ‘kay?” and every time you touched down on him, you squeal —
— “charlie . ..” you cooed, voice cracking cutely. your voice made his cock twitch and from the inside, you felt it all . .. . and it felt so nice. so sweet and so insanely intimate. “ch-charlie, pleaseee.” sickly, your voice bounces along the holy walls of the church’s basement.
lips parting as he tried to find his voice: “cum with me, angel-do it,” he pleaded. charlie felt every little reaction and spasm. every cute gasp and cry and moan sent a thick rush through his aching body. and you’re cumming again, holding onto him as tight as you can, clawing at his biceps.
and that’s when he lets go. pumping in yet another hot, thick load of his cum — you almost gag at the re-fill. his grip weakened, but charlie doesn’t let you fall. he told you that he won’t, so he won’t. he’s shivering, feeling a wave crash down onto him as he’s caving into his high . .. .
if this is sin — this beautiful, divine feeling — then what is the point of it all?

Google is (still) losing the spam wars to zombie news-brands
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT (May 3) in CALGARY, then TOMORROW (May 4) in VANCOUVER, then onto Tartu, Estonia, and beyond!
Even Google admits – grudgingly – that it is losing the spam wars. The explosive proliferation of botshit has supercharged the sleazy "search engine optimization" business, such that results to common queries are 50% Google ads to spam sites, and 50% links to spam sites that tricked Google into a high rank (without paying for an ad):
https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2024/03/core-update-spam-policies#site-reputation
It's nice that Google has finally stopped gaslighting the rest of us with claims that its search was still the same bedrock utility that so many of us relied upon as a key piece of internet infrastructure. This not only feels wildly wrong, it is empirically, provably false:
https://downloads.webis.de/publications/papers/bevendorff_2024a.pdf
Not only that, but we know why Google search sucks. Memos released as part of the DOJ's antitrust case against Google reveal that the company deliberately chose to worsen search quality to increase the number of queries you'd have to make (and the number of ads you'd have to see) to find a decent result:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/24/naming-names/#prabhakar-raghavan
Google's antitrust case turns on the idea that the company bought its way to dominance, spending the some of the billions it extracted from advertisers and publishers to buy the default position on every platform, so that no one ever tried another search engine, which meant that no one would invest in another search engine, either.
Google's tacit defense is that its monopoly billions only incidentally fund these kind of anticompetitive deals. Mostly, Google says, it uses its billions to build the greatest search engine, ad platform, mobile OS, etc that the public could dream of. Only a company as big as Google (says Google) can afford to fund the R&D and security to keep its platform useful for the rest of us.
That's the "monopolistic bargain" – let the monopolist become a dictator, and they will be a benevolent dictator. Shriven of "wasteful competition," the monopolist can split their profits with the public by funding public goods and the public interest.
Google has clearly reneged on that bargain. A company experiencing the dramatic security failures and declining quality should be pouring everything it has to righting the ship. Instead, Google repeatedly blew tens of billions of dollars on stock buybacks while doing mass layoffs:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/21/im-feeling-unlucky/#not-up-to-the-task
Those layoffs have now reached the company's "core" teams, even as its core services continue to decay:
https://qz.com/google-is-laying-off-hundreds-as-it-moves-core-jobs-abr-1851449528
(Google's antitrust trial was shrouded in secrecy, thanks to the judge's deference to the company's insistence on confidentiality. The case is moving along though, and warrants your continued attention:)

Google wormed its way into so many corners of our lives that its enshittification keeps erupting in odd places, like ordering takeout food:

Back in February, Housefresh – a rigorous review site for home air purifiers – published a viral, damning account of how Google had allowed itself to be overrun by spammers who purport to provide reviews of air purifiers, but who do little to no testing and often employ AI chatbots to write automated garbage:
https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/
In the months since, Housefresh's Gisele Navarro has continued to fight for the survival of her high-quality air purifier review site, and has received many tips from insiders at the spam-farms and Google, all of which she recounts in a followup essay:
https://housefresh.com/how-google-decimated-housefresh/
One of the worst offenders in spam wars is Dotdash Meredith, a content-farm that "publishes" multiple websites that recycle parts of each others' content in order to climb to the top search slots for lucrative product review spots, which can be monetized via affiliate links.
A Dotdash Meredith insider told Navarro that the company uses a tactic called "keyword swarming" to push high-quality independent sites off the top of Google and replace them with its own garbage reviews. When Dotdash Meredith finds an independent site that occupies the top results for a lucrative Google result, they "swarm a smaller site’s foothold on one or two articles by essentially publishing 10 articles [on the topic] and beefing up [Dotdash Meredith sites’] authority."
Dotdash Meredith has keyword swarmed a large number of topics. from air purifiers to slow cookers to posture correctors for back-pain:
https://housefresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/keyword-swarming-dotdash.jpg
The company isn't shy about this. Its own shareholder communications boast about it. What's more, it has competition.
Take Forbes, an actual news-site, which has a whole shadow-empire of web-pages reviewing products for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats, all of which link to high affiliate-fee-generating pet insurance products. These reviews are not good, but they are treasured by Google's algorithm, which views them as a part of Forbes's legitimate news-publishing operation and lets them draft on Forbes's authority.
This side-hustle for Forbes comes at a cost for the rest of us, though. The reviewers who actually put in the hard work to figure out which pet products are worth your money (and which ones are bad, defective or dangerous) are crowded off the front page of Google and eventually disappear, leaving behind nothing but semi-automated SEO garbage from Forbes:
https://twitter.com/ichbinGisele/status/1642481590524583936
There's a name for this: "site reputation abuse." That's when a site perverts its current – or past – practice of publishing high-quality materials to trick Google into giving the site a high ranking. Think of how Deadspin's private equity grifter owners turned it into a site full of casino affiliate spam:
https://www.404media.co/who-owns-deadspin-now-lineup-publishing/
The same thing happened to the venerable Money magazine:
https://moneygroup.pr/
Money is one of the many sites whose air purifier reviews Google gives preference to, despite the fact that they do no testing. According to Google, Money is also a reliable source of information on reprogramming your garage-door opener, buying a paint-sprayer, etc:
https://money.com/best-paint-sprayer/
All of this is made ten million times worse by AI, which can spray out superficially plausible botshit in superhuman quantities, letting spammers produce thousands of variations on their shitty reviews, flooding the zone with bullshit in classic Steve Bannon style:
https://escapecollective.com/commerce-content-is-breaking-product-reviews/
As Gizmodo, Sports Illustrated and USA Today have learned the hard way, AI can't write factual news pieces. But it can pump out bullshit written for the express purpose of drafting on the good work human journalists have done and tricking Google – the search engine 90% of us rely on – into upranking bullshit at the expense of high-quality information.
A variety of AI service bureaux have popped up to provide AI botshit as a service to news brands. While Navarro doesn't say so, I'm willing to bet that for news bosses, outsourcing your botshit scams to a third party is considered an excellent way of avoiding your journalists' wrath. The biggest botshit-as-a-service company is ASR Group (which also uses the alias Advon Commerce).
Advon claims that its botshit is, in fact, written by humans. But Advon's employees' Linkedin profiles tell a different story, boasting of their mastery of AI tools in the industrial-scale production of botshit:
https://housefresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Advon-AI-LinkedIn.jpg
Now, none of this is particularly sophisticated. It doesn't take much discernment to spot when a site is engaged in "site reputation abuse." Presumably, the 12,000 googlers the company fired last year could have been employed to check the top review keyword results manually every couple of days and permaban any site caught cheating this way.
Instead, Google is has announced a change in policy: starting May 5, the company will downrank any site caught engaged in site reputation abuse. However, the company takes a very narrow view of site reputation abuse, limiting punishments to sites that employ third parties to generate or uprank their botshit. Companies that produce their botshit in-house are seemingly not covered by this policy.
As Navarro writes, some sites – like Forbes – have prepared for May 5 by blocking their botshit sections from Google's crawler. This can't be their permanent strategy, though – either they'll have to kill the section or bring it in-house to comply with Google's rules. Bringing things in house isn't that hard: US News and World Report is advertising for an SEO editor who will publish 70-80 posts per month, doubtless each one a masterpiece of high-quality, carefully researched material of great value to Google's users:
https://twitter.com/dannyashton/status/1777408051357585425
As Navarro points out, Google is palpably reluctant to target the largest, best-funded spammers. Its March 2024 update kicked many garbage AI sites out of the index – but only small bottom-feeders, not large, once-respected publications that have been colonized by private equity spam-farmers.
All of this comes at a price, and it's only incidentally paid by legitimate sites like Housefresh. The real price is borne by all of us, who are funneled by the 90%-market-share search engine into "review" sites that push low quality, high-price products. Housefresh's top budget air purifier costs $79. That's hundreds of dollars cheaper than the "budget" pick at other sites, who largely perform no original research.
Google search has a problem. AI botshit is dominating Google's search results, and it's not just in product reviews. Searches for infrastructure code samples are dominated by botshit code generated by Pulumi AI, whose chatbot hallucinates nonexistence AWS features:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/01/pulumi_ai_pollution_of_search/
This is hugely consequential: when these "hallucinations" slip through into production code, they create huge vulnerabilities for widespread malicious exploitation:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/03/28/ai_bots_hallucinate_software_packages/
We've put all our eggs in Google's basket, and Google's dropped the basket – but it doesn't matter because they can spend $20b/year bribing Apple to make sure no one ever tries a rival search engine on Ios or Safari:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-payments-apple-reached-20-220947331.html
Google's response – laying off core developers, outsourcing to low-waged territories with weak labor protections and spending billions on stock buybacks – presents a picture of a company that is too big to care:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/#kagi
Google promised us a quid-pro-quo: let them be the single, authoritative portal ("organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful"), and they will earn that spot by being the best search there is:
https://www.ft.com/content/b9eb3180-2a6e-41eb-91fe-2ab5942d4150

boo’d up

summary: a night out enjoying some haunted houses leads to a few surprises pairing: oscar piastri x f!reader (Y/N, use of she/her), implied pairings of alex x charles, rebecca x carlos, & carmen x george wc: 1.6k warnings: descriptions of a haunted house (including darkness, tight spaces, screaming), mentions of being afraid/panicking, cursing author's note: guys i had this idea (because this is based on a true story/real-life experience where i was Y/N in this exact scenario except it was not a hot guy/oscar piastri, it was a young woman and i scared the absolute shit out of her). so i took a lot of creative liberties here. anyway! this is completely un-edited and complete garbage but i couldn't get it out of my head and i haven't written in 12 years. i figured it was time. go crazy!
It was a cold October night; the wind whistling through half-barren trees caused a slight shiver to trickle down your body. The sun had set on the drive to your destination – an old farm in the middle of nowhere, which your friends had pointed out multiple times was a recipe for disaster. You shamelessly pulled the upcoming birthday card to get them to agree to the weekend activity: a haunted house compound you’d read about online that had impeccable reviews – four different houses for $40 was a deal you couldn’t pass up.
A massive, dark, dilapidated house stood in front of you – your first haunted destination of the evening. Screams from inside pierced through the air and sent waves of uneasiness and excitement through you; you’d fallen prey to falsely advertised haunted houses in the past, so you hoped with all your might that these did not disappoint.
“I should’ve stayed home,” Carmen grumbled as she pouted behind you in line. “It’s freezing, dark, and I have a million things I could be working on.”
“Oh, come on, Carm,” you teased, lightly punching her arm. “You’re telling me this isn’t your ideal Saturday night?”
“It’s definitely mine,” Rebecca chirped. “I love Halloween – all the creepy crawlies, scary movies, witches, chainsaw-wielding psychopaths. And candy, can’t forget the candy.”
You laughed and looked around at your small group, your smile faltering a bit when your eyes landed on Alex. She’d wrapped herself up tightly in her sweater, and you could tell she was trying her hardest to put on a brave face, but you saw right through the façade.
“Alex, we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to,” you urged. “I promise you, it’s absolutely ok.”
She shook her head quickly, linking her arm through yours. “I’ll be fine – it’s all fake, right? And I’ll just hold onto you the whole time; I’m still betting that you’re going to be the most scared out of all of us, even if you disagree.”
“Well, we’re about to find out,” you sang, pulling Alex forward to follow Rebecca and Carmen into the menacing-looking house.
Immediately upon entering, you were plunged into complete darkness. The hallways were just wide enough to walk through sideways – if you tried to walk straight, your shoulders scraped against the walls. People were incessantly banging on the walls beside you – screaming and shouting in your ears, your face, following you as you tried to shimmy as quickly as you could through the maze.
You could feel your heart rate kicking up, and each time someone banged on the wall and screamed near you, it began to beat even faster.
In the midst of your panic, you realized Alex’s hand was no longer in yours. You reached back blindly until you were gripping her sweater-clad forearm and started pulling, but surprisingly, pulling with very little movement.
“Alex, move faster,” you pleaded, growing more and more impatient, more panicked. It felt as if she was trying to keep you from running, trying to pull you back and keep you in that godforsaken house. Either the latter or she had suddenly gained a shit ton of muscle, preventing you from pulling her along with ease. “I’m scared, okay? You win, I’m terrified. Now, please try to keep up, I can’t see a goddamned thing.”
The horrors seemed endless – it was still pitch black, and the further you went into the house, the smaller the hallways became. As soon as you started to think you’d never get out and would be stuck in that nightmare forever, you saw streaks of moonlight ahead and burst through a black curtain into the cool, night air.
Gasping for a breath, you dropped Alex’s arm and started yelling as you spun to face her.
“Alex, what the hell – oh my god, you’re not Alex.”
Stood behind you, rubbing their wrist, was an impossibly attractive guy around your age with floppy brown hair and a look of concern on his face.
“You’ve got a hell of a grip,” he mumbled, a thick Australian accent hitting your ears. “Think you might have bruised me.”
You could hear Rebecca and Carmen snickering somewhere behind you, “Yeah, Y/N, you bruised him.”
It took everything in you, but you ignored your friends and focused your attention on the handsome stranger before you.
“I am so, so sorry; I thought you were my friend, and I was panicking just a bit, trying to get out of there as fast as I could. Plus, Alex was afraid before we even got in the house and – wait where is Alex?”
You started looking around frantically, convinced that you’d left your friend stranded in that abomination of a haunted house, only to hear her giggling and chatting with someone just a few feet away.
“It looks like Charles rescued your friend,” the handsome stranger shared. “Since you were too focused on ripping my arm out of my socket.”
“I said I was sorry – ” you started to say, but as you turned back towards him, you noticed a smirk of amusement on his face.
He put his hands in the air in surrender and laughed, “Hey, I’m just messing with you; no actual harm done. I’m Oscar, by the way.”
“Y/N,” you whispered back, feeling a sudden wave of shyness come over you now that the initial shock was wearing off. “And I really am sorry, I hope I didn’t freak you out too much.”
You froze as he stepped closer to you and lowered his voice. “Can you keep a secret?”
Nodding in response, you held your breath as he leaned in even closer to whisper in your ear. “That was absolutely terrifying and I’m glad I had you guiding me through.”
Heat rose up your neck as he pulled away slowly, a soft smile on his face and kind eyes to match.
“Well, I’d use the word guiding very lightly,” you laughed. “More like yanking or heaving, well, trying to. I could barely move you, and I was pulling with all my might. You must eat some serious amounts of spinach.”
“Spinach?”
“You know, Popeye? The sailor man? I’m strong to the finish, cause I eats me spinach?”
He shook his head and your cheeks heated in embarrassment – Popeye? Really?
Before you could die of humiliation and make one of the houses actually haunted, he bumped his shoulder against yours and laughed.
“Must be an American thing – I’m new here.”
“Well, maybe I can show you around,” you offered, bumping his shoulder right back. “I’ve been told I’m a great tour guide.”
“I’d like that very much. Maybe you can start by taking me through the rest of these houses? You can hold my hand – just in case you get scared again.”
He spoke with all the confidence in the world, but his cheeks and nose were flushed a gorgeous pink that you could see even in the moonlight.
You slipped your hand in his and turned your attention back to your friends, who were watching with wide eyes.
“Leave it to Y/N to accidentally almost kidnap a complete stranger in a pitch-black haunted house, and they turn out to be her dream guy,” Rebecca teased. “Looks like Alex found someone too – what did we do wrong, Carmen?”
Before Carmen could answer, two voices shouted from behind and caught everyone’s attention – two more devastatingly handsome men running towards your group.
“Hey, sorry we’re late, Carlos got us lost,” a British voice rang out.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Carmen and Rebecca smile giddily and high-five each other. Before walking over to the newcomers, they winked in your direction and whispered simultaneous “thank you’s”.
You winked back and squeezed Oscar’s hand a little tighter before leading everyone towards the next house.
“I think this next one is clown-themed,” someone mused from behind, causing you to stiffen.
“Clowns?” You whispered, your steps slowing to a near stop.
Alex giggled – “See, Y/N, I told you that you’d end up being the most scared! You should’ve listened to us when we tried to change your mind about coming!”
You turned your gaze towards Oscar, his eyes already on you and that adorable pink blush still prominent on his cheeks. “You know what, I’m actually really glad we came, even if I hate the dark, hate tight spaces, hate clowns, and will probably hate whatever else comes after that.”
“I’m glad you came too,” Oscar replied, adjusting his grip to link his fingers through yours. “And don’t worry, I’ll protect you from any clowns.”
“Mate, you’re terrified of clowns,” Charles ribbed. “You literally said on the way here that if there were any clown-themed houses, you would leave.”
“Gee, thanks, Charles, you could have just kept that to yourself for the sake of my pride.”
“We can protect each other,” you offered. “Or if it’s too much, we can grab some seriously overpriced snacks and wait for everyone else to go through the rest of the houses.”
“How about we face our fear but if either of us screams at any point in the house, you let me take you on a date?”
“I mean, we’re both afraid of clowns, it’s bound to happen,” you acknowledged.
He smiled at you; a heart-stopping, full-mouthed grin, and clarified, “Exactly.”
As soon as you stepped into the haunted house, only one foot each in the door before anything or anyone had even popped out, you both let out blood-curdling shrieks.

An important part of this article on how students are using AI to think and write for them - even when they’re supposed to be writing about a personal experience or assigned a simple task - is the intentionality with which AI companies are targeting younger and younger students, getting them hooked on having AI think for them until they reach the point where, as this teacher said, a senior in high school claimed he couldn’t write one sentence without using Grammarly. It’s alarming that this student has limited his own abilities in his mind to what a bot can do for him, even though the task is something even a small child can accomplish with effort. That’s like saying you can’t make a grocery list without AI - of course you can, if you choose to try, and you’d almost definitely do a better job.
From the article;
Unfortunately, it’s becoming harder to teach them that their ideas have value because they’ve subcontracted out their minds to their screens. They get their news on TikTok and YouTube and do their shopping based on ads they see in between the videos they watch.
One of my students told me there was no point to writing anymore for my class because now “AI just does it for us.” He doesn’t value the writing process because — despite how hard I’m trying — he’s constantly being bombarded with messages that he shouldn’t.
Whether it’s an advertisement for Grammarly on YouTube encouraging my students to add its new Chrome extension on their Google Docs or a video on TikTok enticing them to download the latest version of ChatGPT, my kids are constantly inundated with carefully curated messages that encourage them to be passive consumers in the classroom.
The messaging they receive is so strategically targeted to my students, it can give them a false sense of who they are, while at the same time increasing their dependence on these products.
It’s working. I see it every day. One of my 12th-graders told me he “can’t write even one sentence without Grammarly.”
“ChatGPT is right there with me all the time,” another student said, “like a friend.”
(…)
Educational institutions continue to uncritically embrace AI, moving at lightning speed to bring it into classrooms without thinking through its dangers, limitations and consequences. AI wasn’t designed for schools, yet we continue to operate as though it was.
Things are, however, looking great for Big Tech companies, who are earning billions of dollars to get our students to outsource their minds, thereby losing the ability to think critically.

Yandere oneshot
He held you tightly in his arms—
Not that you knew that, of course—you were out cold.
But the man holding your unconscious figure was a large one, his intimidating figure only accentuated by the large, heavy coat he wore. His skin tone was a soft peachy color, which felt like false advertising considering his skin was most certainly not soft—no, the man’s skin was rough and weathered, just like the rest of him. He stared on with cold, dead eyes.
Except, however, when he would look down at you in his arms. His typically cold chocolate brown eyes (eyes that matched his short cropped hair) looked down at you with such warmth that you would surely melt under his gaze.
If you were aware of it, that is.
But no, you are still fast asleep, unaware of the man holding you in his lap as his chauffeur drives you and the man somewhere far far away from all you previously knew.
The man would occasionally tear his attention away from you (though it was clear he would prefer not to) and gaze foreword, staring out the front window of his limo wondering when they would finally reach their final destination. When he did, his eyes would revert back to their cold, empty gleam. Then he would look back down at you in his lap and a soft sigh would escape his lips, which would always slowly form the tiniest, but most genuine, smile.
Sometimes he would lean down further and place a chaste kiss on your forehead. Other times he would look up at his driver and bark out some order in some foreign language.
Eventually you both arrived at your destination. The destination which, unbeknownst to you, would be your final destination.
Not that you were in any physical danger! No, no, far from it. It was clear from the way the large man gently picked you up, moving you ever so softly from the seated position in his arms to a bridal carry, and the way he gazed at you with such warmth, such adoration, that this otherwise cold man had absolutely no intention of ever harming you.
He carried you up pristine marble steps to the outer walls of a large mansion—which, of course, you cannot see, and which you may never see if he had his way. His chauffeur opened the large oak door and allowed the man in before starting the process to lock the several golden locks on the door.
The large man made his way to a grande staircase and began making his way up, up, up. Eventually, at the very top, he made his way into a large room decorated with all sorts of soft and plush items. Blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, everything, blanketing the room but in a very thought out and practical way. He stopped in front of a large, canopied bed and began gently lowering you into its plush embrace. He watched as you unconsciously cuddled further into the bed and pulled the covers over you. You once again unconsciously adjusted yourself further, seemingly much to his amusement. The large man then leaned over and placed another kiss on your forehead. He whispered something in that foreign language again, then whispered softly, ”Sleep well, my angel.”
He walked over to a large rocking chair, grabbed a book, and began reading as he waited for you to awake.
But, of course, you knew none of this, as you had been knocked out the whole time.

Could you do something similar to that lipstick one you did for Daniella, except it's Alcina and reader is the one receiving the kisses?
Drunk On Your Kisses
Alcina Dimitrescu x Fem! Reader
𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Suggestive I think...Am I interrupting something??
𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: Alcina did NAWT buy any transfer-proof lipsticks, all of em transfers. She just wanted to mark u up🤭
𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞: Sorry for the late response!!! Idk if this is ooc or nah but I'm sorry if it is 😭😭

"How do I look, sweet angel?"
Alcina stepped out of her walk-in closet in a black dress that hugged her figure in just the right way, topping everything off with her iconic black cartwheel hat and the necklace you bought her for her birthday. She looked...angelic, ethereal even. She was just out of this world, you didn't know what to say.
"Perfect..." You managed to utter with a breathless sigh, shamelessly taking in the sight of this...absolute goddess standing in front of you.
A low chuckle escaped your wife's lips as she sauntered over, towering above you with that ever-commanding presence. With a single finger beneath your chin, she gently tilted your head up to meet her gaze.
"Such a cute little thing you are," she purred, voice laced with amusement.
"Come. I need help testing out the new lipsticks."
Without waiting for a protest, she guided you to the vanity, effortlessly lifting you onto the edge of the dressing table as if you weighed nothing. She then settled into the plush chair before you, regal and poised.
"Do you really need to? You’d look good in any lipstick," you said with one brow arched in amusement.
"Well...no, I don’t." She replied smoothly, reaching for one of the new lipsticks, a black one specifically. "But I’m sure you'd love this." With practiced ease, she began applying it, her movements slow and deliberate.
You blinked, absolutely puzzled. What did she even mean by that? You weren’t entirely sure… but the way her lips curled into a knowing smile didn’t help the flurry of questions building in your head. Just what is this woman planning?
Your questions were answered soon enough when she gently took your chin between her fingers, turning your face toward her before leaning in and pressing a kiss to your lips.
You melted into it immediately, more than eager to reciprocate. But just as your lips parted, she pulled away, leaving you breathless and drawing a soft, frustrated whine from your throat. What a tease.
"Hm...such false advertisement," she mused, dabbing her lips with a tissue. "This isn’t transfer-proof whatsoever."
Gears were turning in your head, your mind was reeling, trying to process what just happened. You were too shocked, too surprised to even notice the smudge of her black lipstick staining your lips.
"O-oh..." You stammered, completely at loss for words.
You watched as she reached for another lipstick. This time, a deep crimson shade. Was this really what was going to happen? Were you her willing test subject, kissed over and over until she found the perfect transfer-proof lipstick? Each new shade was like another excuse to drown you in her love… and you weren’t sure whether to brace yourself or beg for more. Well, it's not like you're going to complain.
Just like before, she leaned in and pressed another kiss to your lips. But this time, her tongue teasingly swiped along your bottom lip, pulling a needy whimper from your throat. You parted your lips without hesitation, craving more.
And just like clockwork, she pulled away.
"Well, this one's better than the last" she mused with a sigh. There was the faintest hint of disappointment in her voice, but her eyes told the truth. Glinting with amusement and something darker. She was enjoying every second of this, watching you lean forward, desperate to return the kiss, only to be left hanging again. What a sick...sick sadist. Yet you loved her so badly it aches.
"Still not transfer-proof though" she added nonchalantly, wiping the lipstick from her own lips but left the vivid crimson smear on your lips as proof of her shameless indulgence.
How many kisses had it been?
You’d lost count.
Had she even found a transfer-proof lipstick yet? You weren’t sure. You didn’t care. You were floating, too drunk on her kisses, her lips, and most of all, her touch. You were too far gone to think straight.
"Are you alright, sweet girl? You don't seem well," she asked, her tone feather-light as if she didn’t already know she was the reason.
She tucked a stray lock of hair behind your ear, her forehead resting gently against yours under the excuse of checking your temperature for a fever. When really, she just wanted to be close.
Closer.
"You're burning up, angel," she murmured with a knowing smile.
"I wonder why..." she added with a soft chuckle, pressing a kiss to your nose before pulling back. "You’d best freshen up, we still have that reservation at the restaurant you suggested."
A playful pat on your cheek followed but as she turned to fix her hair. Hair you definitely hadn’t tugged on in a moment of desperation and need during the test. You couldn’t help yourself, it wasn't your fault! She was just...fuck.
“Do we really have to go…?” you asked, your voice soft and laced with something needy.
She paused.
Then, slowly turning over her shoulder, she smiled.
That smile.
“Well…if you put it that way…”

I hope you don’t mind but I have some questions abt ur lab au
Is Ren close with anyone else other thab Martyn?
We saw a bit in the Mumbo oneshot, but how is Mumbo and Scar’s friendship in it? (im biased bc i love them as besties LOL)
Any info on Netty and her relationship with Martyn (pre lab and during it)?
You’ve mentioned how Grian is post-incident, hypothetically how would he react if he got outside (like free?)
Does Scott get hired out for more things than just dancing?
Oh lots of questions! Okay, let's see how many I can answer lol (by the way, if anyone else has several questions, it's helpful for me if you send in several asks instead of one big one)
-Is Ren close with anyone other than Martyn?
Yes! The subjects that can stomach seeing him like this do spend plenty of time with him. They have to go out of their way to see him, since he has his own little enclosure with some fake grass and a dog kennel. Obviously Martyn visits him often, but he also gets plenty of visits from other subjects like Bdubs, Scar, Skizz, Cleo and (when he's with the HC batch of subjects) also False and Doc. Sometimes other subjects just come over to enjoy the grass
-What is Mumbo and Scar's friendship like?
Mumbo and Scar are pretty close. They consider themselves a trio with Grian, even though Grian doesn't participate much. They just find wherever he's hanging out that day, and sit down beside him.
Scar taught them how to make paper flower crowns once, and even though Grian didn't move to make his own, he was still decorated with half a dozen by the end of the day.
The flowers were all yellow.
Scar called them buttercups.
-Netty and Martyn relationship?
Pre-lab, Netty and Martyn had been engaged. They were actually taking a road trip to their wedding location when they got kidnapped, so a bunch of their wedding things were taken with them (most of them the Watchers resold online). The two of them were some of the very first people the Watchers kidnapped, and they put up quite a fight, so the Watchers struggled to get them to the lab.
Martyn managed to grab the wedding rings as he was dragged out. They were still clutched in his firm grip when they reached the lab.
There they made some new friends and -after realizing that would never escape and coping- decided to continue the wedding right there in the lab. They decorated a room with things they scraped together and said their vows right there.
The Watchers hated all that love
-What would happen if Grian was freed?
Hmmm. I don't think I can answer this without spoilers. I'll answer this later ;)
-What does Scott get rented for?
Scott gets rented for two main things. Other than performing (cough cough, you know what that means), he is also advertised as a "personal assistant" which sometimes means he ends up deep cleaning someone's house for them, and sometimes it means sleeping in an unfamiliar bed. Rentings are always difficult for Scott since he's low energy (from not eating. He's never at threat of death though, the Watchers force him to take supplements so they don't lose him)

Lena Blackwell worked behind the bar instead of the floor, where jam packed circular tables faced an at capacity dance floor moving to the sounds of the latest jazz band snazzed up in tuxedos.
She wondered if his feelings got hurt when he discovered the north was no different than the low down redneck peckerwoods he ran away from.

He stuffed the rest of his money in his pocket where a shiny set of brass knuckles dangled, and left the bar to join Ernie.

Stack usually showed up at the Sunset around nine.
Lena figured out his routine quickly because out of the two twins, Stack liked to party and be around the nightlife the most. He stood out in a crowd of men and the ladies loved him.
The Sunset Café started advertising to lure more women into the place for capitalistic gain. Originally the owners created it as a gentlemen's club, but in order to stay lucrative during prohibition, they had to open up the market to new customers, and women loved to drink.
To hide the odorous stench of bootleg hard liquor that could turn female customers away, new cocktails were created adding syrups and various fruit juices to sweeten the bitter taste. The club manager ordered all bartenders to add more cherries, orange slices, and canned chucks of pineapples in the drinks to appeal to the good-time girls who sought excitement. Especially the white ones.
White women loved the Sunset.
White men loved it too, and the forbidden allure of rubbing shoulders with negroes brought out their lascivious side. Everyone in Chicago knew that colored folks couldn't have their own entertainment spaces without white folks sniffing for some action in the mix. As much as they pretended to hate negro people, they sure couldn't stay away from them. Colored patrons and performers tickled their libidinous fantasies. The best music, the best food, and the best dancing happened on the south side where negroes were crowded together. They didn't call it Bronzeville for nothing.
Lena eyed the entrance. Stack was due to swagger through any minute.
The supper hour kept the bar less hectic as folks ate garnished devilled eggs, green beans, steaks, fried catfish, buttermilk-dipped fried chicken, with the added sides of creamy macaroni and cheese with generous slices of honey cornbread.
Max flipped through his tattered, olive-colored copy of the H.P. Dreambook. A man wearing a turban in front of a crystal ball illustrated the cover. He pestered busboys, servers, and Lena about their dreams so he could search them up in his book and find the corresponding numerical interpretation to play the numbers. Another bartender named Frank polished glasses and worked the other end of the counter.

"C'mon Lena, your turn, what you dream last night?" Max asked.
"I don't really have dreams."
"Everybody dreams. Bernice, what about you?"
Bernice scratched an itch on her prominent nose and thought about her answer while she waited for Lena to pour whiskey into three tumbler glasses.
"The night before, I dreamed about going to Paris and seeing Josephine Baker," Bernice said.
She spun around and shook her hips.
"Y'all think she really dances over there naked wearing bananas?" Bernice asked.
"Lemme see, travel… bananas…dancing…" Max murmured.
He circled numbers in his book with a stubby pencil. Lena placed the drinks on Bernice's tray and tapped her foot waiting for Max. Two other female servers went to Frank to fill their orders.
"Okay…two…twenty-nine…seventeen," Max said.
He reached into his tip pocket and pulled out a coin, handing it to Bernice.
"Give that to Melvin and tell him to combinate my numbers," he said.
"You give your own money to the numbers man," Bernice said.
She flounced away from the bar, and Max sucked his teeth.
Stack strolled in and took off his hat and coat, leaving it with the coat check girl. He surveyed the room and two gleeful white women sauntered over to him.
"Them ofays sure do love them some Big Stack," Max said.
Bernice returned with another drink order. She glanced at Stack, too.
"Can you blame them? Look at him…just a big stiff drink I'd love to pour down my throat."
"Man can't even get into the club without women flocking to him," Max said.
"Those two wait to see him every week. They reserve the table closest to the door to catch him," Bernice added. "I ain't never seen him with anything darker than a paper bag, though."
"That's cuz you and those ladies are at the top of the hierarchy."
"What are you bumping your gums about now, Max?" Bernice sighed.
"Niggas out here go for color first, hair texture second, and shape last. Listen to me…don't roll your eyes…white girls and you lightskins…that would be you Bernice with your mixed ass…are at the top. If a woman ain't that, they'll take a brownskin, like Lena, if they have good hair. But if they can't have number one or two, a woman has to at least have a good shape. See, Bernice here, she only got one and two—"
"I got a cute shape, too! I'm all three!" Bernice protested.
"Not with those knock knees and small tits…anyway, like I was saying…you gotta have what's on that list or you won't get no attention in this club. That's why Lena is behind the bar and not on the floor with you all night getting the fat tips. Facts is facts, and that man over there likes to have all three."
They watched Stack as he charmed the women blocking him from the rest of the club.
"Hmmph. Men are stupid," Bernice huffed. "Miss Two-out-of-three, can I get three shots of rum?"
"Coming right up, Miss Three-out-of-three," Lena said.
Bernice cackled, then took the drinks away.
"I never noticed she had knock knees," Lena whispered to Max.
Stack sauntered over with the women and their loud chatter livened up the counter.
"Hey Max," Stack said.
"Good to see you this evening, Mr. Moore," Max said, taking on his polished bartender voice.
He dropped his dream book under the counter.
"What can I fix for you tonight, sir?"
Max waited for the order. Lena headed over to another patron who wanted hooch.
"Ladies, what would you like to drink?" Stack asked.
The first woman, a shapely red head with narrow features asked for a Sidecar, and the second woman, a wide-eyed brunette, requested a Malört.
"You like that bitter stuff?" Stack asked.
Lena clocked the brunette's curling edges from perspiration, and the slight roundness of her nose. To a regular white person, she could pass as Italian or even a Jewish Russian. However, the hair, the extra curve in her ass, and the nervous fluttery eyes told the truth to Lena. The woman glanced at her; a mutual understanding passed between them that she would be treated as a white woman. Who was she to judge what people had to do to survive a depression?
If Stack knew, he didn't let on. Max gave them their drinks and Stack turned his steady focus on Lena.
"You look real nice tonight, Lena."
"Thank you, Mr. Moore," she said.
"When you wear all those curls, it makes your pretty eyes look mysterious—"
"Stack," the redhead interjected.
Her tone came out sharply, saying his name.
"I'm talking, baby, give me a minute," he said.
The bass in his voice caused her lips to bunch up. Her brunette friend sipped the Malört and looked away.
"I didn't come down here to watch you talk to a bartender," the redhead whined.
"Bitch, I don't care what you came here to do."
Max stepped in to de-escalate.
"Mr. Moore, what would you like to have?"
Lena left them to serve other people, and Stack dismissed the two women. He conferred with Max and the floor show began, capturing his attention. Stack loved watching the dancers. He probably ran through most of them based on his reputation. Irritation stretched across his face and Lena served him the moonshine he loved.
"Those girls don't know how to act when you talk to other women," she said.
"I'm tired of them dingy broads anyway. They both have dry coochie and bad attitudes. White bitches love slumming with dark dick, but act all bent outta shape if a colored woman gets a tiny bit of attention."
"You do know one of them is colored, right?"
"Yeah, I know."
He grinned and looked deep into Lena's eyes. She gave him a sly smirk and his eyes drank her in.
"You want some more?" she asked, enunciating each word.
Stack watched her succulent red lips and his gaze dipped to the top of her white blouse, eyeballing the outline of her breasts.
"You undressing me with those eyes, Mr. Moore?"
Dimples.
"I think you're undressing me," he said.
"I been did that," she teased, and sashayed away to serve a counter rush of older men with their mistresses.
She knew he kept his eyes on her ass the way she intended by swinging her hips extra hard.
He loved watching her.
For weeks she acted coquettish and purred his last name any time she served him. Ernie treated him and Smoke as his most trusted muscle men. If he needed an enemy whacked, he sent the Smoke Stack twins with the chopper to deliver a Chicago overcoat first class. Stack strutted around the club with a dominance that aroused her. Most tough guys annoyed her, their performative masculinity a tremendous joke to her.
Not Stack.
He oozed overt power, and she wanted a taste of that in her bed.
"Be careful, Lena, being a gangster's woman ain't the life you want," Max warned on a different night.
He caught her ogling Stack. Lena loved the way his thighs stretched the material of his pants, and she licked her lips at the heavy bulge in the crotch. What she would give to sit on all that hefty weight. She flirted with the gangster using long unblinking stares on him, and lightly touched his hand whenever she served glasses of rum, gin, or the moonshine he liked to call dog soup. Eventually, he would just beeline to the bar to greet her the moment he walked into the club. He only had eyes for her.
Women were easy for Stack to catch because they threw themselves at him. She lured him in night by night, forcing him to chase her, keeping him expectant, and on his toes. The man hadn't chased a woman for a long time and it showed.
Her calculated seduction worked.
He started bringing her things. Diamond earrings. Real ones. Fancy gold hair clips and chocolate candy in heart boxes. He asked around and found out her favorite snack was the roasted peanuts sold a block away on the street from an old German man. He left her small warm bags at the bar before her shift started on Fridays to last her all weekend. She showed up to work one night and Max could barely contain himself. He handed her a large box with a knee-length fur coat inside.
He asked her out a few times, but she played demure, citing the rules of employees not fraternizing with employers.
"Aw Lena. I don't own this place…I work for the man who does. He pays your checks, not me."
"The other girls will be mad if they see me with you."
"Fuck 'em."
"I'll think about it."
He floated for a week after she said that. Like most men, he wanted a slut to fuck in private, but a good girl to woo in public.
A month later, Lena had a rough night with some rowdy patrons. Lower-level men of Ernie's syndicate. Stack had been out of town on business, and she missed interacting with him. His flirty nature kept her work nights fun, and they flew by fast. Without him, they dragged on for hours.
After Lena helped clean the bar area and counted money at closing, the numbers man slid over to Max and handed him a fifteen dollar win.
"Holy shit!" Max shouted.
He turned to Lena, his eyes shiny with joy.
"I'm taking you to Al's Diner for steak and eggs!"
Lena grabbed her coat and purse and walked out of the club with Max. Bernice joined them. They caught a cab to Al's Diner in a seedier area, but the food was delicious. Lena ate her fill and listened to Max make plans to buy his girlfriend new dresses, and a new tailored suit with nice dress shoes to replace the clodhoppers he wore outside of work. Bernice planned a rent party and Lena promised to spread the word and address to their shared apartment building. Max offered to pay for all the food at her party so she could sell dinner plates and keep all the proceeds.
After Max splurged on chocolate malts, she shared another cab ride with Bernice to her second-floor walk-up.
Another week passed, and Stack didn't come to the Sunset. Lena worried that the Italian mafia under Al Capone's orders gunned him down in the windy city or Bugs Moran and the Irish mob caught him slipping and threw him in Lake Michigan. Smoke huddled with Ernie and the other men in their crew, talking animatedly. She made her way around the bar counter. Tensions around the city had been thick among the immigrant groups, but colored folks kept on striving for better. Tempted to ask the other twin about his brother, she felt two muscular arms lift her up when she headed to the secret storage room to retrieve more spirits.
"Stack!"
Her heart triple-thumped in her chest like a train roaring down an uneven track. She turned and threw her arms around his neck instinctively.
"You missed me," he whispered in her ear.
The vibration of his voice along the delicate skin on her neck thrilled her. The breathiness in the shell of her ear heated the blood in her veins.
She kissed him.
Smashed her plump wanton lips across his fuller ones and slipped her tongue past the seam, tasting the strong whiskey on his breath. Their heads slanted for the proper angle to slide warm tongues together. His deep kisses sent love pulses straight down to her toes. Stack tongued her breathless hidden behind an alcove. He cradled her face before pulling away first.
"Damn. I ain't been kissed like that before," he drawled out in his delta accent.
She held his longing gaze in the yellow light of the hanging lamp that dangled above them. As tough as he was, his face looked so gentle and pure up close. Like a big ole puppy that just wanted to play fetch with her heart.
"Go out with me tonight," he asked.
She tickled the facial hair on his chin, then ran a slender finger down the part in his hair.
"How 'bout you go out with me?"
He grinned.
"Where?"
"It won't be nowhere high class like you're used to, but you'll have a good time. Promise."
He lunged for her mouth again, wrapping his beefy arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet.
"Oh, no wonder it's taking you so long to bring those bottles out," her co-worker Frank said.
Lena jerked away from Stack and grabbed the bottles she came for. She rushed past Frank, beaming all the way back to the bar.
Chapter 2 HERE.

Hi! I really like your writing, so I wanted to make a request:
Asmodeus (obey me) x male reader. Reader just adores Asmo, praising him every chance he gets, pleasing him whenever it’s possible. Basically male reader is an absolute sucker for Asmodeus, like a service top 🙇
If you could add some smut that would be amazing, thank you!!
Asmodeus with a Service Top Reader
Pronouns: Reader is not refered to as anything
Physical Sex: AMAB
How far are things going?: they fucking!
Warnings: Anal sex, Bottom Asmo, Service Top Reader, IDK how cock rings work but its there, no protection, reader does not cum
Outline: Asmo wants to try out some new lipsticks to test if they're kiss proof.
What inspired me to write how I did: Nothing!
Other: yessss, I have not spoken about it here or anywhere, but I tend to love the pink twink characters in dating sim games, sm Like Asmo and Aster. Those two also have in common their lack of content, which kills me cause they are cuties and should get love!! Plus I am a sucker for characters you meet earlier in the game (Aster) and the freaky one you meet in the middle of the game [(Asmo) Kuya but this isn't about him]
Skipping across the vibrant halls of RAD with you by his side, Asmo’s pinkish-blond hair shimmered like spun sugar in the afternoon light, bouncing playfully with each enthusiastic leap. He was in high spirits, bubbling over with ideas for the upcoming spirit week that Diavolo had enthusiastically put in motion. “Honestly, I can’t even fathom why anyone would want to dedicate days to wearing just one color! How utterly dull and uninspired that would be!” he exclaimed, his voice filled with dramatic flair.
The day was winding down, and with it came a free period you were able to convince Lucifer to give you, insisting you'd use it as study time, which was true at first, but Asmo didn’t let the chance slip away; he always made it a point to grab and whisk you into brainstorming with him. As you strolled together, you couldn’t help but appreciate his energy. “I think that’s a very clever perspective, Asmo! Having a day to wear something outside our usual attire is a rare treat—yet dedicating it solely to one color, no deeper theme? Not everyone can coordinate their wardrobe around that one color,” you replied, a smile tugging at your lips.
As his eyes lit up with delight at your compliment, Asmo’s skipping slowed to a gentle walk, his arm playfully linked with yours. His hand covers his mouth as he thanks you for your compliment.
Asmodeus reached into his back pocket and retrieved his phone, its sparkly pink case shimmering under the bright rays of sunlight. With a quick swipe, he opened up Devilgram, feeling a surge of excitement. “Ooh! Hold on, (Name)!” he exclaimed, his voice bubbling enthusiastically, “The lighting is perfect here! This is a must-have moment!”
As he positioned the camera, the sun cast a warm glow around the two of you, highlighting every detail of your smiles and the vibrant scenery of RAD. The colors seemed to pop, making you look even more radiant as he lined up the shot.
The camera perfectly captured both of you in the frame, and Asmo could take in your expression. You stared at him with a soft look. A small smile painted your face, eyes consuming his entire being so softly. Asmo felt an electric buzz in his stomach; it made him feel so giddy. Snapping the photo and typing a quick caption, he posted it to his story. The world felt a little brighter, and he couldn't help but smile at the thought of sharing a glimpse of how you looked at him.
He hummed, linking your arms, "How about we head back home? I was sent some make-up to try, and I want you to help me test them!"
~
Asmodeus wiped off the orangey-pink lip gloss. He picked up another lipstick and huffed, "Not one of these is kiss-proof! What false marketing! " He pouted and opened the next color, which was supposed to be a soft pink glitter gloss.
These lipsticks had never been advertised as kiss-proof. Deep down, both of you were aware of that fact. Yet, as his slender fingers gently cradled your face, you could feel the warmth radiating from him. His slim legs draped over your lap, creating an intoxicating closeness that heightened the tension in the air.
Your hands instinctively held his hip's plush skin, fingers sinking into the softness. At that moment, caught up in the temptation of his half-lidded gaze and the electric feeling that erupted from your pact mark, who were you to point out such a trivial detail?
As your lips pressed softly against his, you could feel the gloss gliding effortlessly between your lips. The formula was smooth and not at all sticky. His pouty lips felt luxuriously soft against yours. The sweet scent of the gloss filled your nose with what you could only guess was strawberry and some other sugary fruit.
With a slight hum Asmo pulled away to check the smudge of the gloss as he let out a dissatisfied sigh.
Asmo caught your gaze in the mirror, his expression softening as he noticed how you admired him again. “You think so?” he asked, his voice sultry. You nodded, feeling a warmth spread through you as you tucked a loose strand of hair behind his ear.
“Absolutely. It brings out your eyes,” you replied, your voice barely above a whisper. Asmo smiled, the sparkle in his eyes illuminating his entire face.
He leaned closer, allowing the warmth of his skin to envelop you while the faint scent of his signature fragrance wrapped around the two of you. You could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
“Then I suppose I’ll keep this one to the side them,” he said playfully, his lips curling into a mischievous grin. The tension danced in the air as your breathing synchronized. Asmos's hand glided down your chest lifting the bottom of your uniform shirt to admire the pact mark.
Asmodeus couldn't help but giggle at the coincidence of your mark manifesting just above your pelvis. To him, it seemed ironic. However, you weren’t laughing at all. When the mark appeared for the entire first month, any friction at the spot sent waves of indescribable pulsations coursing through your body. It was a sensation that felt so good, but the constant rubbing from your uniform and jeans would drive you up a wall.
Your face burned as his slender fingers traced the swirls of the mark."Please Asmodeus," Your voice came out as a groan as your hands continued to squeeze his hips. "Let me service you~"
Asmo squealed and lept from your lap, "You're too much of a gentleman (Name)! I thought you'd ask so much sooner!! You really know how to keep a demon on his toes!" He teased as he kicked off his shorts and landed on his large mattress with a huff. He got comfortable on his stomach as his lower half hung off the bed. "What is it you want me to do Asmo?" His face fell, becoming impatient.
"I want you to take your pants off and fuck me already!!" The playful glint in his eyes returned as your pants were down within the blink of an eye. Who were you to deny him?
One of the perks of being the Lust Demon was his freedom from the need for preparation. While there were moments when he savored the anticipation of the build-up, his patience was already paper-thin, and in that moment, he craved you over him.
Your hand reached the drawer beside his bed, where he pulled out a rubber ring. With a creek, you shut the small drawer. Admiring the glittery pink ring in your hand, you slowly slipped it over the head and down your shaft. The rubber squeezed the base of your cock firmly, staying perfectly in place.
You bought the ring to last about half as long as Asmo. He insisted he didn't mind the few rounds you could handle, but you didn't back down from a challenge.
"I still think it's so sweet how you bought that for me; how romantic!" His voice shook as your cock head pushed into his hole, moving as slow as you could for your own sake. The stretch of you sliding into him made him cry out as your hands pushed up his legs, allowing you to get so much deeper than you could imagine.
Asmo keened as you finally bottomed out. The cock ring you wore flushed against him. While the ring helped you stay harder longer, that didn't mean it made having sex with The Demon of Lust feel any less mind-blowing, no matter how often you two went at it. You sighed, right hand pressing the small of Asmos's back, pressing his cock into the mattress for a new layer of simulation for him.
The wet noises that started as your pace sped up were lewd and would have been loud had Asmodeus's moans not drowned it out. It felt electrifying as you thrust continuously against his prostate. His own weeping cock rubbed harder against the soft comforter of his bed.
Asmo turned to face you, his eyes sparkling with adoration. The smooth, milky skin of his face flushed a soft pink as you maintained a firm yet relentless pace. His body contrasted beautifully with the deep purple color of the bed he was splayed across. His lips parted slightly as he panted, exposing his sharp canines. Canines shining in his mouth. "You're so beautiful; I'd never imagined a more beautiful man to lose myself with for the rest of eternity."
His first orgasm crashed against him like a wave. His eyes screwed shut as his hole felt like a vice grip around you. Your own eyes burned as you did all but pray not to cum so early. Begging your own self that you would last, to indulge longer in this bit of heaven your body could hardly handle as your legs shook.
But the blissed-out expression that painted Asmo's face made the sting of edging all the more worth it.

Canada's antitrust regulator said on Monday it was suing Rogers Communications Inc. for allegedly misleading consumers about offering unlimited data under some phone plans. The Competition Bureau, in a statement, said Rogers' advertisements created a "false or misleading impression" that its phone plans provided consumers with limitless data. In reality, the bureau said, the plans have data caps and once reached, the transfer speed is reduced by over 99 per cent. A spokesperson for Rogers said it disagreed with the bureau's assessment of its phone plans, which were introduced in 2019, adding the company would fight the claims.

Paying for it doesn't make it a market

I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me SATURDAY (Apr 27) in MARIN COUNTY, then Winnipeg (May 2), Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), and beyond!
Anyone who says "If you're not paying for the product, you're the product" has been suckered in by Big Tech, whose cargo-cult version of markets and the discipline they impose on companies.
Here's the way that story goes: companies that fear losing your business will treat you better, because treating you worse will cost them money. Since ad-supported media gets paid by advertisers, they are fine with abusing you to make advertisers happy, because the advertiser is the customer, and you are the product.
This represents a profound misunderstanding of how even capitalism's champions describe its workings. The purported virtue of capitalism is that it transforms the capitalist's greed into something of broad public value, by appealing to the capitalist's fear. A successful capitalist isn't merely someone figures out how to please their customers – they're also someone who figures out how to please their suppliers.
That's why tech platforms were – until recently – very good to (some of) their workforce. Technical labor was scarce and so platforms built whimsical "campuses" for tech workers, with amenities ranging from stock options to gourmet cafeterias to egg-freezing services for those workers planning to stay at their desks through their fertile years. Those workers weren't the "customer" – but they were treated better than any advertiser or user.
But when it came to easily replaced labor – testers, cleaning crew, the staff in those fancy cafeterias – the situation was much worse. Those workers were hired through cut-out shell companies, denied benefits, even made to enter via separate entrances on shifts that were scheduled to minimize the chance that they would ever interact with one of the highly paid tech workers at the firm.
Likewise, advertisers may be the tech companies' "customers" but that doesn't mean the platforms treat them well. Advertisers get ripped off just like the rest of us. The platforms gouge them on price, lie to them about advertising reach, and collude with one another to fix prices and defraud advertisers:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/10/05/florida-man/#wannamakers-ghost
Now, it's true that the advertisers used to get a good deal from the platforms, and that it came at the expense of the users. Facebook lured in users by falsely promising never to spy on them. Then, once the users were locked in, Facebook flipped a switch, started spying on users from asshole to appetite, and then offered rock-bottom-priced, fine-grained, highly reliable ad-targeting to advertisers:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3247362
But once those advertisers were locked in, Facebook turned on them, too. Of course they did. The point of monopoly power isn't just getting too big to fail and too big to jail – it's getting too big to care:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/#kagi
This is the thing that "if you're not paying for the product, you're the product" fails to comprehend. "If you're not paying for the product" is grounded in a cartoonish vision of markets in which "the customer is king" and successful businesses are those who cater to their customers – even at the expense of their workers and suppliers – will succeed.
In this frame, the advertiser is the platforms' customer, the customer is king, the platform inflicts unlimited harm upon all other stakeholders in service to those advertisers, the advertisers are so pleased with this white-glove service that they willingly pay a handsome premium to use the platform, and so the platform grows unimaginably wealthy.
But of course, if the platforms inflict unlimited harms upon their users, those users will depart, and then no amount of obsequious catering to advertisers will convince them to spend money on ads that no one sees. In the cargo-cult conception of platform capitalism, the platforms are able to solve this problem by "hacking our dopamine loops" – depriving us of our free will with "addictive" technologies that keep us locked to their platforms even when they grow so terrible that we all hate using them.
This means that we can divide the platform economy into "capitalists" who sell you things, and "surveillance capitalists" who use surveillance data to control your mind, then sell your compulsive use of their products to their cherished customers, the advertisers.
Surveillance capitalists like Google are thus said to have only been shamming when they offered us a high-quality product. That was just a means to an end: the good service Google offered in its golden age was just bait to trick us into handing over enough surveillance data that they could tune their mind-control technology, strip us of our free will, and then sell us to their beloved advertisers, for whom nothing is too good.
Meanwhile, the traditional capitalists – the companies that sell you things – are the good capitalists. Apple and Microsoft are disciplined by market dynamics. They won't spy on you because you're their customer, and so they have to keep you happy.
All this leads to an inexorable conclusion: unless we pay for things with money, we are doomed. Any attempt to pay with attention will end in a free-for-all where the platforms use their Big Data mind-control rays to drain us of all our attention. It is only when we pay with money that we can dicker over price and arrive at a fair and freely chosen offer.
This theory is great for tech companies: it elevates giving them money to a democracy-preserving virtue. It reframes handing your cash over to a multi-trillion dollar tech monopolist as good civics. It's easy to see why those tech giants would like that story, but boy, are you a sap if you buy it.
Because all capitalists are surveillance capitalists…when they can get away with it. Sure, Apple blocked Facebook from spying on Ios users…and then started illegally, secretly spying on those users and lying about it, in order to target ads to those users:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
And Microsoft spies on every Office 365 user and rats them out to their bosses ("Marge, this analytics dashboard says you're the division's eleventh-worst speller and twelfth-worst typist. Shape up or ship out!"). But the joke's on your boss: Microsoft also spies on your whole company and sells the data about it to your competitors:

The platforms screw anyone they can. Sure, they lured in advertisers with good treatment, but once those advertisers were locked in, they fucked them over just as surely as they fucked over their users.
The surveillance capitalism hypothesis depends on the existence of a hypothetical – and wildly improbably – Big Data mind-control technology that keeps users locked to platforms even when the platform decays. Mind-control rays are an extraordinary claim supported by the thinnest of evidence (marketing materials from the companies as they seek to justify charging a premium to advertisers, combined with the self-serving humblebrags of millionaire Prodigal Tech Bros who claim to have awakened to the evil of using their dopamine-hacking sorcerous powers on behalf of their billionaire employers).
There is a much simpler explanation for why users stay on platforms even as they decline in quality: they are enmeshed in a social service that encompasses their friends, loved ones, customers, and communities. Even if everyone in this sprawling set of interlocking communities agrees that the platform is terrible, they will struggle to agree on what to do about it: where to go next and when to leave. This is the economists' "collective action problem" – a phenomenon with a much better evidentiary basis than the hypothetical, far-fetched "dopamine loop" theory.
To understand whom a platform treats well and whom it abuses, look not to who pays it and who doesn't. Instead, ask yourself: who has the platform managed to lock in? The more any stakeholder to a platform stands to lose by leaving, the worse the platform can treat them without risking their departure. Thus the beneficent face that tech companies turn to their most cherished tech workers, and the hierarchy of progressively more-abusive conditions for other workers – worse treatment for those whose work-visas are tied to their employment, and the very worst treatment for contractors testing the code, writing the documentation, labelling the data or cleaning the toilets.
If you care about how people are treated by platforms, you can't just tell them to pay for services instead of using ad-supported media. The most important factor in getting decent treatment out of a tech company isn't whether you pay with cash instead of attention – it's whether you're locked in, and thus a flight risk whom the platform must cater to.
It's perfectly possible for market dynamics to play out in a system in which we pay with our attention by watching ads. More than 50% of all web users have installed an ad-blocker, the largest boycott in the history of civilization:
https://doc.searls.com/2023/11/11/how-is-the-worlds-biggest-boycott-doing/
Ad-supported companies make an offer: How about in exchange for looking at this content, you let us spy on you in ways that would make Orwell blush and then cram a torrent of targeted ads into your eyeballs?" Ad-blockers let you make a counter-offer: "How about 'nah'?"

But ad-blocking is only possible on an open platform. A closed, locked-down platform that is illegal to modify isn't a walled garden, a fortress that keeps out the bad guys – it's a walled prison that locks you in, a prisoner of the worst impulses of the tech giant that built it. Apple can defend you from other companies' spying ways, but when Apple decides to spy on you, it's a felony to jailbreak your Iphone and block Apple's surveillance:

I am no true believer in markets – but the people who say that paying for products will "align incentives" and make tech better claim to believe in the power of markets to make everyone better off. But real markets aren't just places where companies sell things – they're also places where companies buy things. Monopolies short-circuit the power of customer choice to force companies to do better. But monopsonies – markets dominated by powerful buyers – are just as poisonous to the claimed benefits of markets.
Even if you are "the product" – that is, even if you're selling your attention to a platform to package up and sell to an advertiser – that in no way precludes your getting decent treatment from the platform. A world where we can avail ourselves of blockers, where interoperablity eases our exodus from abusive platforms, where privacy law sets a floor below which we cannot bargain is a world where it doesn't matter if you're "the product" or "the customer" – you can still get a square deal.
The platforms used to treat us well and now treat us badly. That's not because they were setting a patient trap, luring us in with good treatment in the expectation of locking us in and turning on us. Tech bosses do not have the executive function to lie in wait for years and years.
Rather, as tech platforms eliminated competition, captured their regulators and expanded their IP rights so that interoperability was no longer a threat, they became too big to care whether any of their stakeholders were happy. First they came for the users, sure, but then they turned on the publishers, the advertisers, and finally, even their once-pampered tech workers:

MLK said that "the law can't make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me." It's impossible to get tech bosses to believe you deserve care and decency, but you can stop them from abusing you. The way to do that is by making them fear you – by abolishing the laws that create lock-in, by legally enshrining a right to privacy, by protecting competition.
It's not by giving them money. Paying for a service does not make a company fear you, and anyone who thinks they can buy a platform's loyalty by paying for a service is a simp. A corporation is an immortal, transhuman colony organism that uses us as inconvenient gut-flora: no matter how much you love it, it will never love you back. It can't experience love – only fear.
