Fëanor and Fingolfin are being stubborn as ever

It’s been three ages, their wounds are healed, they’ve made up and understood most of their deeds

But they cannot for the life of them get along, and everyone, from Mandos to their children and people, know that if they’re released in their current state, things will go right back to how they were

Even if their people are kept in line by their kids, it’s a very explosive situation

And in all honesty, Námo feels like they’ve put poor Finarfin through enough without this addition

He can’t keep them here forever. The halls aren’t meant to be a permanent residence unless it’s by choice, and they’ve started causing chaos in here too

…but speaking of the sons of Finwë

Finarfin himself isn’t doing particularly well right now. He feels great guilt for his inaction over the last two Ages, especially as Tyelpë and Ereinion turned up with their own tales

Then of course little Celebrian

(Doesn’t matter how much everyone tells him they’d genuinely be lost without him and his actions. The Noldor especially would’ve been outcast and alone. They needed a stable ruler, not another revolutionary. And the work he’s done is more impactful than either of his brothers ever managed)

Not to mention he’s still furious at his brothers despite what he’s convinced himself of

…and misses them greatly.

Truth be told, the Valar owe him a lot.

So they offer him a choice.

Ereinion’s skilled with managing all kinds of people and people don’t have a problem with the kid, so for a time he’ll be the High King

Finarfin is overjoyed at the chance to help his granddaughter’s family. Elrond is dear to many across all factions, and his children too.

…He’s less overjoyed at the news his brothers will be joining him if he agrees.

Nevertheless desire to be of use for once wins out and he accepts.

He gets a week or so to say his goodbyes and prepare for the journey. Asking around, particularly asking the third age elves who’ve recently arrived and Celebrian most of all, gets him the clothes and supplies he needs to somewhat blend in.

They’re still his colours (though he has none) and his symbol is carefully hidden under the cloak.

And he heads to the Hall’s Opening.

“For what it’s worth, Arafinwë, I’m sorry for the additional baggage. We’ve asked much of you, but hopefully this at least will benefit us all.”

Námo is kind when he stands and opens the gates.

“I know you’ve missed them too.”

The soft whisper dissipates into the wind with the Vala and now two figures are walking out. Tall. Broad shouldered. Eyes shining with light.

Clad in their usual blue and red, weapons strapped to their backs and hips.

Fëanaro and Nolofinwë have returned at last.

Before he can say anything there’s a whirl of light and the three elves are swept away.

Aragorn did not sign up for this

A bright flash of light all but blinds him, leaving three figures in its wake.

Three very tall. Very Elven. Figures.

And if that’s not enough, they look strangely familiar. Like he should know them from somewhere.

“That damn Vala! He couldn’t have warned us!”

And now they’re speaking Quenya.

“He did. It’s not his fault you don’t listen to anyone but yourself,” the one clad in blue says viciously.

The third elf, the only one with blond hair, groaned and glared at the two others. Aragorn winced at the look, thankful he wasn’t under it, though neither of the others so much as flinched.

“You’ve been back how long?” He scoffed. “And here I thought I missed you.”

To his credit the one in blue showed some regret and bowed his head. Beside him, the red one huffed, but it was much less heated, and his hands clenched into the leaves around him.

“Forgive me, Arafinwë,” the blue one said.

Aragorn’s hand found his blade. It couldn’t be…

“Depends what you want forgiveness for, Nolo,” was the cold reply, tinged with hurt.

No way.

But it was there. The uncanny resemblance to the portraits he’d seen in his books as a young boy learning his history. This was no doubt Fingolfin, and beside him Finarfin. Which only left-

“My feud with Fëanaro has long tainted our relationship, little brother,” the blue elf- *Fingolfin* replied bitterly, glaring at the third elf. “I’d like to start again.”

“Well I’d like you two to shove your issues aside for once and try and get along!” Finarfin hissed back, and his older brother’s eyes widened. “How long will you keep fighting?! How long will you divide your people, your children! How long will you make them suffer for your egos?!”

Aragorn expected Fëanor to scowl, angrily proclaim his youngest half brother had no right to speak that way, but the elf only glared into the floor. Fingolfin stared into the trees and Finarfin turned away, eyes clouding with pain.

Only to stare right at Aragorn.

“Fëanaro, Nolo. Swords up.”

To their credit the elves immediately stood and followed Finarfin’s gaze to Aragorn. The Ranger carefully stepped into the light as the three sons of Finwë stared him down.

“It is not polite to lurk, stranger.” Fingolfin said in the common tongue and Aragorn vaguely wondered if he’d been taught it in the halls. He put his hands up, free of weapons, and lowered his hood.

“Forgive me, my lord Fingolfin. But I had to identify if you were friend of foe. You appeared in a strange manner wearing faces of old, and the enemy is skilled in his deceit.”

“You dare accuse us of being Sauron’s creations?” Fëanor’s eyes lit with a fell fire and Aragorn would have shuddered was he not accustomed to seeing much worse from his own father. Elrond could be… rather terrifying when he decided he’d had enough of his son’s’ shenanigans.

“He was being cautious,” Finarfin retorted. “Something you could learn from considering how your life ended.”

“I didn’t know what Balrogs were!”

“The great Fëanaro admitting to not knowing something, have the end of days come at last?”

“Some would say his presence here is an indicator of that,” Fingolfin muttered as Fëanor scowled at the blond. The scowl turned to him and he met it squarely. “I said what I said.”

The situation was fast unravelling and Aragorn had Nazgul on his tail. For all his training in Elrond’s house, nothing had prepared him for dealing with three Princes - Kings??? - of the Noldor at each others throats. Sending a prayer that this wouldn’t get him skewered, he whistled sharply and the three elves spun his way. He raised his hands in apology.

“Orcs and other fell beasts roam these lands, my lords. I’d advise a quieter argument?” He grimaced at the two stunned faces, wondering when it would turn to explosive anger that ended the line of Elros once and for all.

But Finarfin tilted his head, a small smile playing about his lips.

“It takes great courage to step between the arguments of the House of Finwë. What’s your name, stranger.”

The Ranger bowed his head.

“The trees have ears, my lord, I’d take you to an Elven safehaven before telling you that. But for now, you can call me Strider.”

ooOoO this is good. and i feel like i should deliberate longer but i don't want a good ask to go stale in my inbox. i'll clarify that poison, here, means what everybody is most susceptible to. their kryptonite, to be culturally relevant rn.

like i said in 3x09's recap, i think cuddy's biggest poison/weakness is the specter of failure. her very image that she maintains betrays the very possibility of failure, which is why house md cleverly offers her "failure" as invisible and internal (her infertility). when people poke that nerve, especially without any inside knowledge, her self-consciousness and nervousness takes over. this natural, understandable reaction is demonized internally, and characters like house, one of the few whom she lets a little closer, exploit this, creating a neat example of the hypersensitivity and criticism faced by a woman of her stature/position. but, at least in the earlier seasons, house md is so loathe to LET cuddy fail that she basically becomes a superhero in my eyes.

i'd say chase's biggest poison is belief. this is, of course, another reference to my fount of Catholic Chase Ruminations; he's always looking for a creed to follow, despite thinking/trying to do otherwise. that's why in the earlier seasons he's so desperate to preserve himself/his job, and in later seasons we see, despite everything, that he returns to house. this is also why i find it so circuitously tragic that he inherits diagnostics because now HE is that source of faith and that creed.

cameron's is conviction, which is markedly different from chase's sensitivity to belief. cameron's convictions are the strongest part of her character and lead to a strong, stable view of the world that guide her actions; they also lead to incredible ruin. if she could let herself indulge in something NOT so morally rigid, she would be a worse person...but more of a person, probably (i sound like wilson in 2x06 lol). this also leads to the cycle of disappointment she endures across the early seasons, especially during times like her search for goodness within house. but that disappointment just reinvigorates this cycle and we start all over.

foreman's would be introspection, if that's the word for it? he hates to look inward because he hates what he sees (i.e., the greg house of it all). he lauds his external success and stature to set him apart from others (i think of his brother), but it's very clearly a front to avoid investigating the trials and tragedy that led him to this place. this is extra painful because he is a fantastic doctor. those experiences have enriched him, his house-isms make him a good doctor, but he lumps it all in as a Bad Past To Never Be Exhumed. funny that he's the neurologist lol.

it's really hard to qualify house's poison without being corny and just saying Himself. so i'll fall back on my ultimate favorite theme of the show - unconditional love. within this we can envelope nobility, self-sacrifice, bravery, and all the things house thinks he can logic-out within a person. he rejects these things because they complicate his view of the world, of himself, and of those closest to him. it's why he has to test all his relationships that are based on choice. it's what makes him human, at the end of the day, and he can't escape that fact by playing god via his profession. he rejects any and all attempts at change because that change, that initiation of a conscience, would make him re-question everything, as well as admit that he both believes in and deserves love.

and if i gave wilson his own chunk of this already long-winded answer...?

wilson's greatest weakness is honesty, and not just because he's a big fat liar and cheats on all his wives. that's a symptom of a larger problem. i think wilson feels perpetually guilty of how he needs people, and from this guilt came all the personas. if he can derive utility from this gaping hole in his psyche, then that makes it okay. and that utility gives rise to performances that vary based on the social setting. and those performances become increasingly divorced from the person he started as, which makes it harder over time to fill that hole from which all this started. this is also how he's created the endless trap of heterosexuality for himself.

if he was just honest, we could have interrogated that need for neediness like amber was able to. she cut through all of this bullshit.

(i swear i have much more to say about amber that doesn't entwine her with wilson, just bear with me on this one): amber was the closest wilson ever came to honesty, the kind that's not borne out of a lack of a "social contract" or the "functional vampire" relationship he's strung up with house. by having some of the same abrasive, uncompromising, and deductive traits in house, but translating these into a social setting that requires intimacy, she was the perfect storm. 4x14, "sweet dreams," my beloved...wilson was never better than he was in that moment...

except. there's still a social script that he's following there. he's still only associating honesty with sex, which, if you peruse my comphet wilson tag, is his catch-all for intimacy, deflection, and utility. it undercuts honesty. he hides behind (hetero)sex. i think, textually, this is why it's super exciting and important that the most intimate we ever see wilson is with amber, with the implication even that they've just slept together in 4x14. he was SO CLOSE.

house's ability to perceive wilson's bullshit, like amber could, in the absence of sex is in part where the functional vampire, universal donor/universal recipient, "shine of my neediness" of it all comes into play. without the social performance of sex, wilson flounders under this investigative gaze, but his true self emerges, nonetheless. and true wilson is often ugly, mean, hurt, and afraid.

all of these answers of mine are subject to change lol - i'm kinda just spit-balling here. i don't feel like i have the greatest hold on cameron's character anymore, and i think foreman still comes into his own as the series unfolds. but i'm clearly pretty comfortable diagnosing wilson lol. poor guy.

Ogeh some news and updates, I've finally settled for a theme for my island and I think I'll go with Japanese/Asian style mix with other themes (idk what yet), so I changed my home exterior again (and hopefully for the last time)

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)

I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).

Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀

Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

yknow what. tommy was buck's most functional relationship to date actually. yeah it wasn't the most exciting he had ever had and they didn't click that much but tommy was not about to move to another country or scared of what it meant to date a guy who risks his life for a living, he didn't grow to resent buck because they were fundamentally incompatible, he basically said "i would have loved to move in with you down the line but I can't because /you/ don't really want to. you just don't know it yet." because buck has misconstructed the idea of a romantic partner down to the bones of "i need someone that's my girlboyfriend because everyone has a girlboyfriend and it's all im missing to be complete." except he already takes everything that a partner could give you from eddie. a home, reassurance, family, someone who understands him and cares for him, someone he calls when he's down, someone who takes him to the hospital and sits with him and tells him when he's being stupid. that's eddie. buck knows it's eddie. so everything every other love interest does for buck will simply bounce off the walls of his beautifully insane brain and he can never understand what's wrong. why did tommy leave him? he didn't ask for much. (unaware that's the exact point). he's not looking for a partner he's looking for a paper-thin placeholder. imagine what it will feel like once he realizes he can just put the right name to the man who's been there all along and call it a day.
