this is kind of a hashtag summaryofart but also kind of a hashtag artvsartist because i put myself at the end i guess whatever i cant be assed to do two of these grids. end of year thoughts under da cut

i didn't have a lot of free time for leisure drawing this year... i feel like i say that EVERY year but idk looking back at my tumblr archive.. its not lookin great. I really worked my ass off at my day job most of this year like the show i was on was pretty challenging and kept my brain churning on it even after hours. plus every freelance job i did this year.. PLUS the fact that I did I think 10 (if im counting right?) conventions/tabling events?? I feel like I did a lot of merch prep to fill out con tables and such but i really long to do bigger illustrations and comics and i didn't really get the time to.. I'm actually planning to do less cons next year because I think I did too many haha. for the first time I'm feeling the temptation to fill out these "summary of art" memes with a big NDA square or whatever because I'm really proud of a lot of the art i made this year but.. unfortunately ...i can't show any of it! at least not yet. I've always thought the nda joke was just an excuse made by artists who feel ashamed about not drawing outside work (or smug about having paid gigs). and in a way i still think that but for once i can empathize a little lol. While I didn't get to spend as much time on personal work as I wanted this year... I'm still kinda proud of the stuff I did make! I spent a lot of 2023 when I was unemployed going to figure drawing sessions and I think it really paid off, I feel a lot better about my character drawing now. Not... not 100% confident but a lot better than I used to feel about it haha. like i didn't really draw that many bgs here bc i drew so many bgs at work I didn't have the energy for it.. but the characters actually look good i think so! I'm happy about that.

Hi! im trying to design a 'dudes go die in a dungeon' style system and I'm struggling with what level of random generation to use for the dungeons. I am very interested in this style of game but have never actually played in one so have no experience to draw from. the conventional approach seems to be that the layout and boss are premade with loot and encounters rolled on the fly, what are some other approaches? are there any dungeon generation or encounter tables that I should check out for inspiration? any personal opinions on the matter?

I would've dm'd but thought other people might also want to hear your thoughts.

I personally recommend reading and playing at least a few of this style of game before trying your own hand at design! But I will gladly give my own input!

So, the degree of randomness in dungeon design very much varies from one edition of The Dungeon Game to the next. At much one extreme you have AD&D 1e which not only had procedures for populating the dungeon and giving out treasure but also for just mapping the dungeon. The latter was mostly a matter of using some random tables and could produce unpredictable and incoherent results though. At the other extreme you would pretty much have something like the WotC D&Ds which expect a heavy degree of DM authoring (even though they do sometimes contain hints of random generation!). The Basic/Expert set sits somewhere in the middle, assuming that you've already drawn a map and are simply using the tables to populate it.

Now, the conventional wisdom actually isn't to have just the layout predetermined and then generate everything else on the fly: while random generation is often used to aid in the process of prep, the purpose of prep is still to actually prepare a location with occupants and some features set in stone. If you place a treasure room in the dungeon you would generally be expected to prep what the treasure is and how many guards there are.

That's not to say that there isn't any content generation on the fly: that's what you've got your wandering monster checks and tables for.

Anyway, I think dungeons should always have a place in the fiction and should generally feel like actual places, and short of some really well-made tables you will generally have a hard time getting that purely through random generation. I think dungeons are the best when they are designed with a purpose in mind: this purpose and place in the fiction is one of the many ways through which players can actually develop a sense of place about the dungeon and learn to make informed gameplay decisions therein.

But yeah, I recommend looking into a bunch of different dungeon games for their various approaches to this! Old School Essentials is a recreation of B/X and has a free SRD online which includes its dungeon stocking procedure, you can undoubtedly find a number of articles musing on creating dungeons, and so on.

Okay so I’m attending Hana-con, a local con in Hanover in Lower Saxony (Germany). I’m only attending one out of the 2 days. The con itself starts on Saturday the 12th of April but I’ll be attending on Sunday the 13th of April

It’s gonna be my first ever convention and I don’t have any irl cosplay friends so my main goal is to meet people, exchange numbers, make connections in order to attend my next convention not with my mom but rather someone who’s also interested in the stuff I’m obsessed with.

Yes I’m going with my mom. I’m scared of p€dos bc I’ve heard that the likelihood you get approached by one when you’re by yourself is so much more higher then when you’re in pairs or in groups.

Is that really that big of a problem? I guessed we left thoes behaviours in the past

Im really excited for all the shows, the artist alley (even though I plan not to spend a single penny) . I’ve never seen anything like a convention before. Lockdown and Mentak health has prevented me from ever making such experience.

lots of discussion on the dash as of late about trying to get people to switch from dnd to other systems (filled with ppl saying correct and true things. this is not a criticism), but relatively little recommending specific games or systems. well be the change you want to see in the world is what they say, so to anyone looking to branch out but not sure where to start, i would like to recommend my all time favourite ttrpg:

SPACE TRAIN SPACE HEIST

here's the little itch.io blurb (or the important part anyway): "A high-octane, single session, GM-less, Forged In The Dark, goof of a game for 3-5 players about space robbing a space train."

the number one reason i recommend this one is that it's very easy to learn no matter what system you're used to or if you have ever played tabletop at all. the rules are quick and very clear, it only uses one type of dice (a d6, the one basically everyone has at least in some board game or another). i have played this game with people who have only ever played dnd, and i have played it at a board game night with 0 ttrpg players. the game recommends 3-5 players but ive played up to seven and with some effort i think you could also play with only two.

another reason: it's gmless, and it has ZERO prep (besides maybe reading the rules, but i read them for the first time while learning to play with a group, so its not THAT important). to me this is one of the major sticking points of trying to make a dnd group: deciding who is the dm and then relying on that person to prepare a session. while i love dming, sometimes you just also want to be a player for a bit. well now we're all players!

(there is a facilitator role that's explained at the back of the rulebook, if you want, and if your players are a bit nervous to play totally gmless. but tbh, i will say i often SAY i will facilitate and then change nothing about how i would play besides reminding people of the rules and making sure everyone gets a chance to speak, both things that by the end of the game other players are usually doing of their own volition to help each other along. often, especially with otherwise experienced players, it's a little intimidating to go without a gm because of convention, not because they aren't capable of doing it. they always are!)

the mechanics and theme encourage you to be as ridiculous as possible (with playbooks like space wizard, where you can cast any spell but only once before you forget it forever, or egghead, where you're completely useless on purpose except for one specific and critically heist related expertise; train cars filled with escher staircases; and npcs who are extradimensional dragons or intergalactic popstars. or who run a junkyard. yeah on the train in space), and when i play i try to emphasize that the only win condition is that the players have fun and the story be interesting and funny. while i don't want to just Explain All the Rules (i want you to download the pdf from the game designers that does that), i will tell you about what i think is the best one:

when you make an action roll, you roll a number of d6s based on a few conditions. the first and most important of those conditions is "describe what you do in cinematic detail". to me this is actually what makes this game so fucking great. one of the parts i always find difficult to handle with games like dnd is preventing slog. you know, when youve been in combat for awhile and at each turn the player is like "Well. im gonna use my greatsword." then they roll and they go "oh cool i hit" (<- completely deadpan voice and expression) and you the dm says "ok you did x amount of damage" and they go cool. turn over. BORING. now there's lots you can do as the dm to prevent this, but they rely on you the dm trying to prevent this. or coming together as a table and trying to find ways to prevent it together.

in space train space heist, in order to even roll in the first place, you are required to get descriptive!!! you can't say "well i hit him with a fireball" (a thing you can absolutely do in space train space heist, btw, as long as you're playing a space wizard), you have to go more like "i move my hands in a circular motion and start chanting an incantation and from my palms comes a great BLAST of fire that shoots across the room and i want to explode the security robot into a gazillion pieces" now THATS cinematic detail!!! and all that extra detail has the added bonus of making it that much easier for other players to work in where their character is, what they're doing, and what the group needs to do next. it makes it so much easier to get into the roleplay, and imo is such a beautiful way to work it into the mechanics, and it's SO much easier to involve players who are otherwise really nervous or uncertain about roleplaying

obviously it's very different mechanically and thematically from dungeons and dragons. to me this is part of why i think dnd players should give it a try; often dnd players branch out only to very similar games, and while i do think you should chase your bliss (and i have nothing against games like say pathfinder. would love to play it someday myself lol), i think space train space heist can show you just how wide and varied ttrpgs actually can be. and although i myself still continue to play dnd 5e and probably will for the forseeable future, i think my experiences playing space train space heist have exponentially improved how i handle dnd games and how i think about making it fun for everyone.

the game is $5 USD. if you aren't able to afford that, no worries because there are currently around 69 thousand community copies available for you. and if you bought the ttrpgs for trans rights itch.io bundle awhile ago you already own it! pleaseeee give it a go all you need is 2 friends, a few six-sided dice, and to get a little silly with it

oh btw just a heads up for y'all, summer is gonna get a little crazy for me since it's festival season and ive got a bunch of festival work and volunteering going on:

August is pride celebrations for us here and im leading two events on back-to-back weekends, so the whole month is probably gonna be pretty hectic for me

ive got some smaller just "regular" volunteering for a convention and a music festival in july and september

my Big One is the animation festival at the end of September. im actually working that one and will be fully gone for that cause i'm basically gonna live at the festival 24/7 as i'll be running the café as well as two parties, but i'm also gonna be on call for the event coordinator if they need anything in the runup. which means i'll probably be going downtown to help with prep and stuff a bunch just whenever they need help ajshsgsgs

midterms are this week. I have 3 exams for 2 classes, and an art assignment that I havent worked on in at least a week with no out of class time. ADDITIONALLY ive got a bunch of meetings/appointments, and convention prep that includes styling a wig (which i am very not good at, but its not one that can go unstyled) and bedazzling a shirt (i have never done it before) I also have quite a bit of money management stuff i gotta do because Im finally getting my car back, and apparently there was an issue with one of my student loans and I got an $1,000 refund that ideally I'd just use to pay off some of my loan but I've got 18 kajillion other things so its all just one big IDK LOLZ situation. Maybe i'll just wait til after the con or my next depressingly small paycheck or until i can get a non-campus job lined up AAAA. adulting is big confusion man

DRAMA

okay, so ill start off with giving out fake names. (also this is dnd related, just an fwi)

Our nice nice people shall be:

ASHLEY(current master), JENNY(ashley and owl's bff), OWL(you guys already know her, hehe), REX(sweetheart), AVELINE(sweetheart n2) aaaaaaand me.

Now,this all started back in may, when Ashley said she wanted to try out mastering a campaign for the first time. Now, since Jenny and Owl had already done so many times(especially Owl, shes the best i know in the field! she also works for cosplay conventions as a master for other rpgs in the summer, its so cool i swear) they of course let her, hoping it would have all been worth it.

As time passed by and a month became multiple (fyi their usual campaigns would last like, maybe 3 moths with a max of 10 sessions), everyone (except Jenny) started to notice just how boring and badly written it was getting. Owl tried multiple times to give out advice (mind you, in the nicest way possible as she quite literally has been doing that role for years now) about stuff others would hate, but she always reacted lashing out and then completely ghosting them until she'd either 1calm down and act as if it didnt matter or 2get an apology out of them.

I wasnt in their group yet, but started getting closer with all of them around this september as Jenny started prepping up a campaign that was supposed to start around november (due to the other one still not finished and her having a lot of stuff to do due to school).

SUPPOSED TO.

why? you might ask? IT HASNTEVEN STARTED YET.

So obviously, since this girl just kept on pumping out session after session trying to make this campaign a never ending one (she also admitted nonchalantly MULTIPLE TIMES that many werent even thought through [it showed..]) AND making my character SINCE AUGUST, preparing my sheet in december (jenny literally promised me it would have started around january), i was obviously growing tired of it.

I would also often listen to Owl, Adeline and Rex's rants (as they also became basically my best friends...dont worry Blue is also with us!) on their boredom and GENUINE DESPAIR as they just wished for it to end soon, not even able to handle that girl's need to be on the centre of attention anymore. (Owl cried in my arms. Multiple Times.)

A quick sum up of the least she did wrong (wont go too much into detail as im literally TIRED of debating on it):

Not accepting any kind of critisism, comment or literal advice and acting like everything's perfect --- Bad, BAD writing of the npc's, especially ones that went through literal HUMAN. TRAFFICKING. (no, ash, your guy who had to be chained and totured for years and had to go through forced labour since he was a child WOULD NOT REALISTICALLY BE A "BDSM KING"....GIRL, WHAT THE HELL ToT) ---- COSTANTLY made fights that literally lasted hours in which more than half an hour was dedicated to her 8. EIGHT NPCs SHE TREATED LIKE THEY WERE THE MCs and Jenny's character being a "girlboss"...and then would went on and attack only Owl,Rex and Adeline's characters - Get mad when they would realistically get slightly distracted or joked during her basically hour lasting ted talks (basically just her making her own npcs talk with each other and forcefeed everyone their lore ALL THE TIME).

Now, given their tiredness, the day after their 15th SESSION they decided for Rex to send her a message as he had always been the sweet one of the group and it would have been better for the "nice one" to text her. He sent a long, polite message telling her about the problematics some of them had found in the campaign, and even apologies in the end if it sounded like an attack, promising it wasnt.

And of course? She went completely insane over it.

After a bit of back and forth between her, Ashley demanding to know who the "others" were (girl, bffr its a group of five, he used multiple so more than him and another person, its obvious the majority talked about it), she sent a message in the gc basically going like: "hey so u guys have some problems with the way i did stff? alright: the campaign's done. Have fun! Ill go with my REAL friends"

............huh.

she also left the groupchat, to which like??? okay??? pop off with the 6th grade behaviour!!! youre SO cool for being immature! /sarc

Anyhow, now we dont know Jenny's opinion on it, will probably do so on friday as Owl will go to her house to hang out and grab some stuff she left last session (which indeed was at Jenny's house.)

I'm just sure of one thing: if that girl suddently decides the campaign i will be in wont happen anymore I'll CRASH. OUT.

No, ive not spent SEVEN MONTHS making my character's(she her) full cosplay, gadgets, helping other player at making theirs, making HER SECRET DIARY WITH ALL THE LORE IN IT, giving her full detail to the world building of the kingdom she grew up in (with economic and legal system too), making endless drawings for her and everyone else and over all researching all about what there was to know on her race and neurodivergencies (which i have too, but did so anyway jjust in case) and also making a full class sheet (i think thats how it's called? The paper where you have all the classes youre gonna have every day of the week) for NOTHING!!

So, this is the drama...i'll go do more research for my other ocs now :3

HOW TO MAKE LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE EASIER:

my credentials are that i have adhd and used to hate exercise and healthy eating and now i do both at least semi regularly, and i lowkey hate cooking, i dont wanna cook MOST days. also, im fat, and when it comes to fitness-spaces, 9 times out of 10 im the fattest person in the room, so i fully understand the anxiety that comes with being a fat person in like the gym. anyways, i’m by no means an expert, but i’ve definitely made progress, and ive reaped the benefits of a healthier lifestyle and yall deserve to too. also, im gonna try and keep most of these fairly easy and inexpensive.

1. Increased visibility of healthy snacks.

i keep healthy snacks in the door of my fridge so they’re one of the first things i see. also, i keep produce in CLEAR tupperware so i can both see it, and it being sealed makes it last MUCH longer. don’t put produce/healthy snacks in the drawer(s) of your fridge because that’s where things go to die.

however, put little treats that you probably shouldn’t have all the time in the drawer of your fridge. i literally used to drink 5 cans of diet coke a day until i started putting it in the drawer of the fridge, and now i basically forget the diet coke is there, and ill open the fridge drawer sometimes and ill be like “omg there’s diet coke in here!!! :0” however, if i’m being honest, soda is the only thing i’d keep in the drawers because it takes a long time to expire, and (personally) if i don’t see it i forget it exists. you know urself tho

2. find sources of protein that require minimal or no prep/cooking.

gym bros are correct about protein, it keeps you full, helps brain fog, and is basically the building block of your entire body. however, i lowkey hate cooking. some good minimal effort protein sources are greek yogurt, string cheese, grocery store rotisserie chicken, canned/packaged fish, chickpeas/hummus (i really like chickpea pasta, it’s usually like a dollar more than regular pasta but it has extra protein and fiber so i think it’s worth it), cottage cheese, beans, and nuts. the price of these all depends on your region, also protein powders and shakes are always an option, but they’re often expensive.

my personal favorite is the rotisserie chicken because it’s like 6 bucks and it lasts for days and i can add it to stuff and really make it any flavor profile in the case that i do feel like cooking. most of the time i just take some, put it on a plate, put it in the microwave, and eat it with hot sauce.

3. remember the non-conventional reasons for living a healthy lifestyle

i feel like a lot of us, especially as women, are really told that the benefit of healthy eating and exercise is using them as tools to achieve thinness. this is for sure easier said than done, but try to find reasons for healthy living that aren’t about aesthetics.

mine personally are that when the semester ends in may i know that moving out of my apartment is gonna be much easier because im much stronger than i used to be. i like being able to pick up and twirl my friends around when i hug them. nine times out of ten im able to get all of my groceries inside in one trip because i dont struggle with the weight. i do all of these things, while being fat, because of my healthier lifestyle.

my timeline is lookin like ... last batch of new designs will arrive to me hopefully in the next week or so to have at melbourne supanova may 22-23, and i’ll mail preorders out after the con late may/early june! i’ll then be at sydney supanova june 18-20, which probably wont be enough time to have any new designs in befOre then but depending on how much i can get done i might try and have her come in late june since i’ll be at melbourne ozcomiccon july 3-4 and then adelaide avcon july 9-11!!

so YEAH i tHink the earliest i could have valk charms available for preorder would probably be sometime in june? if i cant get her in before the july tour i’ll probably take an extra month or so to get some other new designs together but i really would like to have her available as soon as i can 🥰🥰
