Thoughts on the Lost in the Book Halloween Event [Ep 1-3]

hello 🤠🤠 guess which bitch decided to kick this blog alive after checks calendar 6+ months of inactivity.......

unfortunately, twistie wonderworld has created a not-azul character that appeals HEAVILY to my tastes 🧍‍♀️ and you may as well call me dead with how much i've thrown myself off a cliff over mr skully j graves

this is also not counting that AZUL MOTHERFUCKING ASHENGROTTO IS IN THE EVENT AND THEREFORE I GET DOUBLE WHAMMIED

SO ANYWAY. I WOULD HAVE DONE EPISODE BY EPISODE SCREAMING AND CRYING BUT MY ASS HAS BEEN TIRED AND BUSY THE PAST TWO WEEKS. BUT THIS RECENT UPDATE HAS GOTTEN ME BY THE T H R O A T SO IM UP. REVIVED. AND ABOUT TO BLOW PPL'S EARS OFF WITH MY THOUGHTS ON THE LORE, AZUL, AND SKULLY

since all 3 episodes have been long out, i'll just give my thoughts on the theories that sprung, thoughts on moments that struck me, and thoughts on the most interesting lore we get

Episode 1

it is embarrassing to admit how many times i've entered 1-4.

when i heard the voiced line, i was like ?!??!1/1!?!1 because not even rollo and fellow got that much voiced lines

and then when i saw the translation, it was joever for me

YOU CANT JUST GO "hello, hey, you who slumbers in my arms, can you hear my voice? please wake up for my sake" AND EXPECT ME TO BE NONCHALANT ABOUT IT................ IM JUST A GIRL

anyway when he said moshi and wagahai, that was when people started going oh fuck is he even from the present?? IS HE EVEN HUMAN???? and his asking what magical pens are does Not Help

all i can add further to this discussion is that i have not seen enough discussion about the fact that we don't really see his ears in the live2D............

his school lore is rly interesting too because he implies that magical stone distribution isn't equal unlike what the nrc cast have now (which is that they each have 1 stone of the same quality). so if the theories about him being a past nrc student are true, then it opens up a lot more lore about nrc's history

speaking of "skully being a past nrc student" theories, i do actually support them! for one, epel was silenced by jamil when he was about to say that they're students of night raven college. writing direction wise, i find it a very suspicious move to cut epel off just before he mentions where they go to school. but i think the strongest evidence right now is the detail that a jp tweet pointed out, in which skully also called the town in sage island the foothill town. said tweet said that night raven college students would call it the foothill town because it's how they see it from their point of view of being on a cliff. to them it's the town on the bottom of the cliff, or the foot of the hill. but for royal sword academy students let's say, since the town is just right next to them, they wouldn't call it the foothill town because it doesn't make sense in the perspective of where they're located. tho ill say, im not really sure if it Is officially called the foothill town in the twisted universe (it is called the foothill town officially in location names though). if it is officially called the foothill town in-universe, then consider this evidence null

its pretty crazy to me how deliberate the cast choice in this halloween feels because u really feel it when riddle called for a leader's meeting and it was just first years left alone. overblottees altogether is already an INSANE choice that i'll get back to later in this post, but for majority of them to be dorm and vice dorm leaders, it's p interesting. but it ends up making sense tho later on when they start doing halloween prep (and let's be real, if it was the others, barely anything would be ready)

it. left me insane. how skully gave everyone a kiss. like sure, it probably wasnt the best feeling to have your hand kissed without consent. BUT. I REALLY LIKE THAT HE DOES IT TO EVERYONE. INCLUDING US. im pretty weak to being included in general, so skully rly stole my heart here, like the kiss on the hand (WHICH IM ALREADY WEAK TO) isnt already stealing my heart. it adds sm to his character too 😭 when u account for how he's been made fun of, him talking to everyone and including even yuu is a way of him coping with the loneliness he's experienced 😭😭 he tries to be gentlemanly to everyone he meets

hinterlands!! just a side note, but when i was watching nightmare before christmas earlier, i realized how similar the hinterlands doors are to the mirrors in twst. cause u can still arrive at the hinterlands from the different towns, the doors just let u travel faster to them. the beginning of the movie also specified that nightmare before christmas was set in a time long long ago, when it was the age of the holidays. though the halloween townsfolk aren't familiar about twisted wonderland, it's a really cool thought to consider that maybe they were in the same world, it's just that they wouldnt have called the entire world as twisted wonderland, they just know of their own towns. or at the very least, in-universe, the writing of hinterlands' doors was inspired by OR PROBABLY inspired mirror travel

SKULLY LOSING A BIT OF HIS POLITE SPEECH WHEN HE MET JACK SKELLINGTON, IT'S SO CUTE 😭😭😭 but i also wanna bring it up now that having this event feature both the og character and the character twisted from them is BIG. the moment jack skellington was teased in the trailers, i knew twst was starting to bring out the big guns. i always figured ever since way back then that twst was going to let us meet the great seven, but we just don't know How. but it's Big that we even get to see the interaction between the movie character and the twisted character because it may be a possible foreshadow to what may happen once we start to tackle the historical revisionism of the great seven's' stories and how our characters will react to it. halloween 2 and glorious masquerade were also used to foreshadow book 7, so lost in the book nbc event foreshadowing something like book 8 or hell even book 9 would make sense.

Episode 2

ok episode 2. god fucking damn it this episode RUINED ME PERSONALLY

but before we get to that, i wanna talk about skully's vision of halloween because i found it very interesting

when he was talking about how halloween should be silent, dark, and a time of reflecting on repentance and atonement where you can have an aid for it (like a pumpkin or a candle), i genuinely felt my catholic upbringing hit me way harder than with rollo. i SWEAR i've had my mom tell me once or twice while i was a kid that halloween is supposed to be a holy day because of the word hallow, and how it was called hallows eve😭😭 and how it's not good to dress up in costumes of witches, monsters, and devils because it's devil worship or smth. and it's also why we never had halloween decor growing up. im pretty sure she no longer remembers that cause we're now way more lax about those things, it's just that damn, i'm just saying y'all, i would 100% believe a person in 2024 celebrates halloween similar to skully's version

maybe it's just me being stupid pilled, but i really find the situation very ironic. i know that the interjection of the night raven college boys to voice out their disagreements about skully's way of celebrating halloween is to mirror the interjections of the townspeople when they were trying to understand and even voicing out disappointments about jack's presentation of christmas. but i find the scenario very very interesting because irl, christian puritans and conservatives would scoff at the pagan traditions, call them barbaric while we're at it, and do the whole thing of inserting christianity into it. it doesn't help that pope gregory III called november 1 as a day to honor all saints and then oct 31 was called all hallows eve, and then the christians celebrated some of the samhain traditions as well. but you see here in the story how it's the night raven college students, who promote a festive and more modern halloween, calling skully barbaric for his ideas of halloween, especially for the elimination of ghosts.

some ppl might find skully's ideas boring or too traditional. for me, it's kinda just a matter of differing cultures. like, i've grown up having a mix of trick-or-treating halloweens and halloweens where i just stay indoors. and i grew up in a catholic sphere where halloween in skully's vision is much preferred. so maybe it's just me but i can't really hate his vision. at the same time, i've also been on the side of completely shutting down people who bring up arguments rooted in strict catholic tradition, simply because i looked down on them. but i got lectured (not directly) that we shouldn't immediately shut down those arguments because hey, there are points that are made, esp if worded right. so reading this conflict in episode 2 tickled my brain. in the end, though, my overall thoughts are: i think that while skully looking down on people for disagreeing with him is something for him to improve, nrc students aren't totally in the clear either. they're all fair for having their disagreements, but in twisted fashion, they're all stubborn as hell

this also made me think about the ghosts and how the vast majority of twst might perceive them. the population of twst is still vastly non-magical, and while the dead are generally celebrated, i can't help but wonder if nrc's harsh reactions to skully's bias against ghosts is due to the fact they are in a campus where ghosts are able to manifest all year round and therefore they get to interact with them. but for a good majority of the population that cannot see ghosts nor are they mages, how do they really feel about the ghosts? i find it to be food for thought. and on that topic, people also avoid ramshackle because it's haunted. though,,, from the way halloween is characterized in twst, it sounds like everyone really celebrates the ghosts coming to the living, esp because the magic is stronger everywhere. but are all cultures receptive to that..?

anyway, poor skully had to meet the jack who's been seeking out something different for halloween (esp bc movie jack was dissatisfied initially with his pumpkin king schtick) so he's had to have his ideas rejected

jamil's so kind as to comfort skully. very interesting part though from azul 👁👄👁 he's like "well if his ideas get rejected then he should just make a new proposal, don't give up" and it's just a nice lil look into his projection. like dang azul :') it's obvious that he gets up very quickly after every setback, but knowing that in his mind, he Has to get up quickly, and thus expects everyone to do the same,,, ,he never gives himself time to breathe and process, i kinda cry for him. jamil thankfully being like "yea he can do that but still, it sucks to be rejected" like yes jamilllll say it!!! on another note, this feels like a really good idea to write for an azujami fanfic :)

THE MUSIC GROUP SEGMENTS. WHY ARE AZUL AND SKULLY INTERACTING REGARDING MUSIC. TWICE.

like the first one, we get to know the music tastes of azul, jamil, riddle, and skully. azul, being the gay ass bitch he is, exposes jamil's music taste, being fast tempo music one can dance to

as a classical music girlie, i personally lost my mind when skully asked if it was waltz or tango music 🤡🤡🤡 LIKE. WAAAAHHHHH WALTZ AND TANGO MUSIC ARE ABSOLUTE BANGERS PLS I NEED PPL TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THEM AND OUGH OUGH THE THOUGHT OF DANCING A WALTZ WITH SKULLY AND—

AND JACK ASKED HIM WHAT SKULLY LIKES AND SKULLY SAID HE LIKES OPERA AND IM SO HAPPY THAT SKULLY GOT TO FANGIRL ABT JACK ALSO LIKING OPERA AND EVEN SINGING FOR THEM (and jack's singing is amazing like no cap)

but also suddenly i regret not listening to more opera in my life. im sorry puccini for ignoring u all this time. i may or may not have binged some opera music the night of the update.

BUT THE SECOND MUSIC DISCUSSION. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

anyway, just before the second music group segment, we get a really nice conversation between skully and sebek, in which skully shares that he's afraid if everything he's known is so far from reality. and sebek's like ok u respect tradition but u also have ur ideals, u should be more firm in ur ideals. and skully's poetically thanking sebek for showing him the light, and ty sebek for contributing to the future shitshow that skully will start in episode 4

Episode 3

ah yes. the episode where i lost all my marbles

first part, we get lock, shock, and barrel popping in. jack said that they were going to help out, but they ended up causing a lot of chaos

absolutely LOVE how they rattled almost all of the students, like i wheezes at lock calling epel a shortie and epel losing it. then vil's like, epel that is a CHILD insulting u, dont stoop to their level. and then lock was like ewwwww ur eyelashes look like centipedes, and vil was like SAY WHAT BITCH and jamil's reminding him of what vil just said.

AND THEN THE FUNNIEST MOMENT OF THE EVENT: LOCK GIVING JAMIL A BUG ON HIS HAND, AND JAMIL PROCEEDING TO FAINT

in true gay fashion, azul tells epel and the audience about jamil's fear of bugs

SECOND FUNNIEST MOMENT: LOCK OFFERING THE BUG TO JADE BUT JADE'S LIKE nah give it to vil and epel BUT THEN HE'S CALLED BORING AND THAT FUCKING TRIGGERS HIM???? JADE LEECH, THE MAN THAT DOESN'T USUALLY GET FAZED BY PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS OF HIM, GETTING PISSED OFF THAT HE'S CALLED BORING TO THE POINT THAT HE GOES "give me the bug. i will even make exciting reactions. just give me the bug." LIKE HOLY SHIT FKDHFAKJBFSKANFKNSAF THIS MAN HAS A COMPLEX ISTG

anyway, skully's unique magic can change people into pumpkins, and lock, shock, and barrel turn into pumpkins. once skully transforms them back, they're like do it again !! but skully's like no my UM is still developing so i cant use it more than once. but still, this impresses everyone.

SOME LORE ABOUT MAGIC: jamil says that skully's um is pretty advanced because it's appearance changing magic, which is already really hard with the aid of a transformation potion. and leona points out that while it might not work on those with high mana, it can at least catch someone off guard. i think it is also worth bringing up that transformation potions generally are banned, so this is a really interesting um that can still be perfected and developed !!

poor sebek, he gets jealous and tries to assert dominance but even malleus compliments sebek, and that pisses him off more SKDFJNSDKSDSKF

anyway sebek demands a third round of splitting into different teams so he can try to be with malleus, even when everyone was already happy enough with their teams

well sebek won finally BUT poor skully, he's now separated from jack AND HE'S CRYINGGGGG

leona is so funny, he's like oh thank GOD im not with the octavinelle bitches, and azul's like aw dont be lonely there :))) istg i love these two bitches and their bitchiness rubbing off each other, it's so yummy (and with the latest octa manga update it's made even YUMMIER)

now music group's gotta compose AND WELL. FINALLY I GET CONFIRMATION ON THE COMPOSITION SKILLS OF AZUL (and jade). BOTH OF THEM DONT KNOW HOW TO COMPOSE....

leona's like lmao dont merfolk love singing or some shit, aND THIS ACTUALLY GETS AZUL PRETTY UPSET. Azul's like, hey not all merfolk like music or have an inclination to it! LORE DROP: the song is also rly popular in the coral sea, as in they learn it when they're really young. and leona's like well it makes sense, the sunset savannah faces the sea, so trade between us and the coral sea is very likely to happen. WORLDBUILDING MY LOVE

trey was so close to being screwed bc he says he rly loves the hamburger steaks in the cafeteria and they're so good he could eat them every day. but then riddle gets mad because there is a queen of hearts rule banning hamburger steaks on tuesdays AND TREY HAS TO CLARIFY NO I DIDNT ACTUALLY EAT IT

jamil meanwhile mentions he rarely eats at the cafeteria cause he makes food for kalim anyway so might as well make his meals. honestly real and good for him.

anyway moving on to the vil, malleus, sebek, and epel group!! ok this group is so cute cause the two first years are together, and their senpais are with them!!

WE GET A LOT OF LORE HERE OMG so they used to dye cloth with plants in lilia's house because they got,,, three colored sauce,,, on the curtains. malleus offered to buy new curtains but lilia said no. me too vil and epel, idk what three colored sauce is. ik it's a reference to the three fairies BUT HOW DO U GET THREE COLORED SAUCE LILIA PLS I HOPE IT'S THREE SAUCES IN DIFFERENT COLORS NOT ONE SAUCE IN THREE COLORS

finklestein mentions oh we have witches here too u know! and vil's like omg they must be beautiful like me

if u watched nightmare before christmas before this scene, you KNOW this is the start of the punchline. unfortunately, i did not have the pleasure of watching nbc before this so i did not get to enjoy the joke BUT I DO NOW

so the witches come in and OF COURSE VIL'S FUCKING HORRIFIED THAT THEY'RE UGLY AS SHIT. AND THE CHERRY ON TOP IS SEBEK BEING LIKE "ohhh this is a punchline" HAHAHHADKABSJDBJS

but also having all 7 overblotters may mean that twst wants to hint to us that this event could foreshadow a future arc where we meet the great seven and explore the disillusionment they may face. i'll dedicate a longer post to that though. but im excited for it

i do hope that in ep4 and 5, ppl realize that there is merit to skully's ideas of halloween. in the movie, jack skellington realizes that maybe doing christmas just doesn't suit him and sally was right. and at the end, santa gives halloween town a taste of snow. i'd like to see a merge of the ideas of nrc boys and skully's. at the same time, i hope skully realizes too that halloween can be celebrated with everyone, and in fact, it's more fun that way :'))) i want all of them to learn from each other. i want skully to be happy.

anyway i eat this event. it genuinely made me go back to playing twst as actively as i used to (never mind the fact that i put irl responsibilities to the backburner until urgent-), and im so excited for the last 2 updates 😋😋😋😋 i may also post a few more things about this event before the update on monday because god, my brainworms are terrible

The Absortion(Swallowing) of Metis and why it was an act of Devotion (From Zeus' standpoint)

CW: Discussion of Cannibalism and its usage as a metaphor for obssesion and/or love. Discussion of Toxic Relashionships.

Gosh, i wanted to write this post for a while but i always got cold feet on it because of the themes it touches. But you know what? This is my blog so whatever. Besides, no one that's into greek mythology is a normal person so maybe some of the readers of this will see the vision.

Anyways, lets get to the point.

1. The Cronus vs Zeus debate

Something i see a lot is that people say that Zeus eating Metis is a direct reflect on how similar he is to his father. That he was even more cruel than Cronus, for eating his pregnant wife. But i don't quite think so...

I'll show you two descriptions of the same events:

While the Dionysiaca shows quite a morbid description, the Theogony gives us a simple "He put her away inside his own belly". This is of importance

Greeks believed the stomach was the source of thought (but correct me on it if im wrong, im taking my info from the Theoi.Project page) so "To put her away in his belly" could also mean "Put her inside his mind" in a direct way. Remember that there are versions of the myth of Zeus and Metis that don't explain how this happened (like above) it just says it happened. Some versions try to explain it as Metis shapeshifting into either water or a fly so Zeus could swallow her whole in 1 gulp.

Meanwhile, Cronus description of this act uses a word, "banqueted". Almost as if he enjoyed this merciless act. Even says "Cannibal wise" meaning it had to be horrific, he didn't swallowed whole, he teared tissue, he probably even crunched bones. Ate them as if they were a piece of meat.

What does this mean? Gentleness

Where Cronus was ruthless, gulping down his sons in a morbid way, Zeus was gentle with Metis.

If it was the same mistake, if they are so similar, why wouldn't Zeus just do the same as Cronus? Eat her whole, crunch at her bones, drink her blood. The outcome would have been the same.

He didn't. He tricked her into becoming smaller, so that she wouldn't suffer. So that it would be quick. Was it out of love for Metis? Was it so Zeus would feel better about himself? Take your pick. But he was gentle with her, swallowing her, putting her inside his mind as carefully as he could.

"He still ate her!! And while pregnant!! That is barbaric!!"

Well, i like to believe it was also so Metis wouldn't suffer like Rhea...

5 times Rhea gave birth, 5 times Cronus swallowed the children before they could even open their eyes.

"Unceasing grief seized Rhea" Zeus knew just how much his mother had suffered at the hands of a man who keept stealing the chance to be a mother from her.

He couldn't do that to Metis. He could have just as easily ate Athena at birth, and keep Metis, even if she would hate him afterwards. Truly repeat history and make of Metis a second Rhea.

He didn't.

So he took a way less barbaric path than Cronus. And they acted with different intentions, with different hearts on it.

Still wrong in his actions, Zeus still did a horrific thing. Yet, in his mind, he wanted to be as gentle as he could be. He didn't want Metis to experience pain, he didn't want an unborn Athena to be born only to die on the spot. The love was there, mixed with the paranoia. But the love was there.

2. Why did Zeus did it?

It is obvious, isn't it? The prophecy.

Metis was going to bare a child meant to overthrown him. He couldn't have that, he wouldn't have yet another conflict. And you'd say that he was such a coward for it

But remember, it is most likely Zeus had just came out of Titanomachy by this. He just spent 10 years of war against his own father. He was not eager to go into another familial conflict so quickly. Heck, he couldn't even know if his son would or would not be a good king at the very least.

He is god of Order. And Order he must mantain, even if it pains him. He would not go to war again, and not against his own blood.

Yet, if it was the boy that worried him, why not just.... Divorce? The prophecy was clear as day, the first child would be a girl, a safe girl. He could have her, then go separate ways with Metis.

He has done this before. He stopped chasing for Thetys when it was prophetizied that she would bear children greater than his parents. He could have done the same with Metis.

Yet he didn't. This man could not just let go of Metis, he couldn't bear the thought of letting her drift away. Wheter it was her smarts, her cunning, and he felt like he needed her to be a good king, or that he just loved her to the point of borderline obssesion; whatever intention he had,

He. Would. Not. Let. Go.

So at this point, its no even about fear of Athena being born. He just can't let this wise, amazing woman to run away from him. Who else is going to help him rule? He NEEDS her. Without her, who is he?

They won Titanomachy, because Metis was there to counsel him. And Zeus trusted that as his wife, Metis would keep on helping him, that they would be an amazing ruling team. Zeus had the charisma of a leader, and Metis was the brains needed to rule a kingdom.

Divorce, sure. And then Metis goes away, and Zeus would never find another woman as wise, cunning, and smart as her to help him rule. Divorce her, and his first love will wither away, leaving nothing but painful memories of what could have been without that pesky prophecy.

And so, in his desperation, he makes this plan.

And he literally has a epiphet born from it:

"Metieta" was an Epiphet used to refer to the wise counsell of Zeus. An important characteristic for a king.

But it also refers to what he did to Metis. Now inmortalized as one of his traits. This was his objective. They truly are now bonded for life, never to be separated.

And in some versions of the myth, Metis doesn't seem to mind. At least not enough to try and escape.

3. The Life of Metis inside Zeus.

Gosh are writers obssesed with the idea that Metis is misserable inside of Zeus' thoughts (And while that's a depressive idea that i love to explore too) there's this one text of Hesiod that makes me wonder if that's the case....

This text gives the implication that Metis had the chance to also run away during Athena's birth. That it was her chance as well to be set free.

But she stayed hidden within Zeus' vitals. She decided to not take the chance. And im starting to think the obssesion is going both ways for this two gods.

Im not saying that Metis is not upset about it, that she wouldn't want to be free. But if she does, its a given that she and Zeus won't be able to stay together. It would be the end of it. She would have to go away, for Zeus wouldn't find another way to keep her.

It's complex for her.

"He did this to me!! But he did out of love... He ate me just like that!! But he did it gently... He did the same as his father!! But did he now? He has placed me among his dreams, he has put me in a high regard, he has build this place for me inside his conciousness because it was the safest bet for us..."

She doesn't know anymore what to feel about this. Its messy, so so messy.

Because most writers explore the idea of Metis suffering in a kind of wasteland that Zeus' thoughts must be, but i don't see anyone thinking of the opposite.

And what if Zeus placed her among his dreams? What if he put her in his imaginations. Crafted a whole, wonderful world inside his mind just for her, so she would be as comfy as possible inside of him. I don't think its impossible, we already stablished Zeus was gentle before, why won't he be now?

Another missconception is that most people think this was the dead of Metis, but yet it wasn't. She's still alive

She's in there, and she knows of everything that's happening, and she is still giving Zeus counsel everytime he needs it. She can be bitter about it, yet she still helps him. In a way, you can say that any myth that involves Zeus' taking a choice wether in a jugdement or something, Metis IS THERE.

It even speaks volumes when you take in consideration that there is a version of the Myth where METIS HERSELF gives the prophecy to Zeus. Like, you would think the goddess of wisdom would rather keep that one to herself. She didn't

Why? Why would you tell yourself like that, woman? Maybe in a effort to see if you and Zeus can solve this dilemma? Who knows?

Either way, to put it in a silly way, Metis lives rent free in Zeus' brain. And she doesn't seem to have plans of leaving anytime soon (even if it seems she would be capable of). She only forced open Zeus' head so that Athena could be born.

By the way, wasn't Athena one of the "feared child of the prophecy"

If so.... Why the heck is she the favorite?

4. Athena

The feared child, the one that promtped Zeus into eating Metis. Yet she gains the tittle of the favorite daughter?

Let's review. Athena has done a lot of things, some of which would even make you question why is she the favorite daughter.

Her involvemnt in the Troyan war AGAISNT the troyans even thought Troy was one of Zeus' favorite cities. In some versions she is part of the mutiny against Zeus too.

But guess who's the only one that gets away with a slap on the wrist, while Hera gets hanged and Poseidon and Apollo banished to troy?

Who gets to use the lighting bolt? With who does Zeus shares the aegis? For who does Zeus releases Odysseus?

Athena and Zeus relashionship really is; "Daddy, i want a new barbie dream house!" "Anything for my smart-cookie!!"

Why tho? I like to think that it is because Athena is what Zeus' has left of Metis, in a physical way. She is the embodiment of Zeus' first love, the produce of it. And she has her eyes, and she and Metis share the same symbols, and there is so much of Metis in Athena that it sometimes pains Zeus.

Of course, that last bit is headcannon but still, what other reason would there be to love so deeply one of the childs who could bring your ruin?

5. Summary

Cannibalism can be used in many ways as a storytelling device.

Most use them to represent a toxic relationship, abuse, and assault. But it can also be used to represent obssesion, devotion, love and a wish to be one with another.

Don't believe me? If you are familiar with Christianity, you know christians have this one ritual where they eat a piece of bread and wine, meant to represent the body of Christ? That they do it as an act of devotion, and to remember Jesus sacrifice to humanity and yadda yadda.

It bases on the idea that once you digest something, part of it will be forever with you, united for eternity.

There's a clear distinction between Cronus, that cannibalize his sons in a horrific way, not to gain anything from it but the morbid satisfaction of keeping his crown.

And Zeus, who did so gently, and made sure that Metis could still speak to him from within. And when Athena was born, he didn't even got mad about it, but embraced her as his favorite.

I think, this myth and the relashionship between Zeus and Metis has lots of potentials for retellings. It has so many angles you can choose from, after all!

Update! 6 Months Post Flip-Phone

Yippie ki-yay y'all! Get a flip-phone. My first blogpost about this journey in my life was very technical, pros and cons about the transition to daily life with a flip phone, this blog-post is more vague about how it has affected me mentally. There haven't been many changes to my actual daily carry, but I'm attaching my EDC! I still use the Sunbeam Bluebird, but for those more interested in a review I will make a separate post, if you are deciding on which dumb phone to get I suggest you read it. Lets get into the actual updates!

What are the most prominent changes I have noticed?

Attention span/tolerance has gone up

The norm of physical attractiveness is much different now

Tasks and chores are manageable and commonplace

I have higher standards about the content I consume

Social life hasn't changed much, but if anything it got better

Depression? Disassociation? Not gone, but significantly decreased by at least 70%

Lets start with the first one, attention span. Good God. I used to feel antsy in every situation, even if I wanted to be somewhere I was always absentmindedly thinking about when it would end and I could retreat back into the comfort of my smartphone. That sort reaction is so mentally draining and one of the small things I hadn't noticed until retreating wasn't an option anymore. With a flip-phone? Im eager to be everywhere for as long as possible! Events and little socials have regained their magic and joy! I am more tolerant towards things that would have felt like a waste of energy compared to being at home and find myself actively seeking to be in social spaces. They still exist!

The norm of physical attractiveness is totally different now. This is a huge one, social media does such a good job only showing attractive people. Its the largest requirement to get your content featured, you have to be attractive in some way. Instead of being tucked away into my phone while i'm waiting between classes, eating out, just being in public, I do a LOT of people watching. Its very fun. A result of this new found hobby is that I am looking at so many more faces that haven't been sorted into attractive vs not attractive by social media. Isn't that crazy? That not only do we get our brains absolutely rotted, but that it changes the way we rate other people? Regular average people online vs in real life is so different. My 'standards' for attractiveness are now based on the standard of the public, not the hand picked ecosystem of social media.

Tasks that used to be burdensome and inconvenient and chores that I used to have to plan for and make myself do have lost their difficulty and need for preparation. Dishes? Well i've got five minutes before I have to leave so ill just wash a few. Tidying up? Mm my breakfast is in the toaster, might as well wipe down the counters and sweep. Laundry? ... ok well don't get me started on laundry, I still cant make myself put that shit away...

The standards of the content I consume have gone up, if i'm going to sit down and watch something, I actually want to consume it rather than use it to pass the time. I obviously still have some social media on my laptop, but I really only post on Tumblr, use Pinterest for art references, and Reddit on the occasional. Instagram and Youtube are pretty much obsolete unless I need it for something specific. I play a lot of sudoku while waiting around, and if I remember to carry my book with me I read. One of my goals this year was to read 12 books, last year was 10. Truth be told the majority of my reading happens in the summer cause oh boy senior year of college is no joke. I cant wait to be able to put away my laptop for the summer. As mentioned on my first post, I still have an iphone without a sim card, it serves as alarm clock (I need 30), a menstrual tracker, banking apps, REM calculator, photo editor for when I need to print things for my journal, and my works database app for my schedule, and AO3. Oh my blessed AO3, my love for fan fiction was never expected to be dulled by the flip-phone. I still love to read a bedtime story every once in a while and support my fav authors!! One day I am going to be a rich woman who sponsors authors with money from my big girl job hehehe.

My social life was already a bit lackluster, I tend to get really sucked into school and keeping my head on my shoulders, but i've got two really good friends. Talking to people in my classes is easier because I don't have anything else to do and the flip-phone tends to be a good conversation starter. Ive def been much more participative in my colleges' social scene and clubs!

Oooo now onto the emotional stuff, depression and disassociation. For most of my teenage life 13-18 I have struggled with disassociation and anxiety, not much of it, I am blessed to be quite mentally well, but it was still present. The occasional bout of teenage depression slowly increased in frequency and strength as I got older and was allowed to have a phone (I didn't get one until 14). Disassociation became an ever present struggled that ebbed in and out of my mind constantly, creating a pattern of anxiety towards 'am I going to have a good month or a disassociated month' or 'what if it gets bad right before the semester starts and I don't get good grades' and 'i've been too good for too long, its inevitably going to get really bad soon'. The months preceding my switch to a flip-phone were particularly revealing, social media made be nauseated, being even near my phone made me anxious, I knew I had a problem with it (9 hours average of screen time), and my body started to react. Every time I would scroll on instagram reels for an hour or two, I would come out of it mindless and disassociated. A flip-phone has made my days GOOD CONSISTENTLY!!!!! I almost always have a good or neutral day!! In an effort to be more grateful and mindful I track my days in my journal, and the change in 'average day color' between when I had a smartphone vs flip-phone is obvious. Little squares filled in with red or orange highlighter suddenly stop, and little squares filled in with blues and yellows start. Obviously a flip-phone wont fix your life completely, but it has drastically improved mine. If you are considering getting a flip-phone, listen to me now when I say that its not a big decision with small rewards. Its one object of your life (a smartphone) traded in for something better for you (a flip-phone). That is all a phone is, it is an OBJECT, and an ACCESSORY, to your daily life. Its like deciding which water bottle or backpack to use for daily life, which shoes are your favorite, what book your going to read next. If you feel like you are succumbing to your smartphone and its controlling your life in any way, I encourage you to make the swap.

hey guys, lily here

ive been thinking for a while. a LONG while. like, since january, when my activity in taocc first started to kinda taper off. and.

i think im going to officially leave taocc. like, actually leave. im not breaking ties with it completely. i love you all so much and id hate to lose the friendships ive made in this community. but i think im done.

not only has my interest in taocc just completely gone down the drain, but it just feels like so much goes on in the day that even if im online often, i still miss out.

not to mention, i think i was using taocc to cope with being lonely. i had no idea how attention starved i was until i joined. i was obsessed. it got to the point where my rps on tumblr were getting in the way of my real life relationships, and i didnt notice until it was too late.

the moment i met my boyfriend was the moment i realized i was only using taocc to cope with my need for attention. the moment i started posting about him was around the time i stopped interacting as much.

also, all of the drama and traumatic events and stuff have been way too much for me. i joined taocc looking for a fun, silly time to be silly with friends, and i feel like its just devolved into a traumafest. none of the characters are ever happy for long, and its really started to get to me. i thought maybe stepping away for a bit would fix that, but instead it just made it feel worse.

so. im leaving taocc. not exactly sure what im going to do with all of my blogs just yet. maybe ill hand them over to some of you, or maybe ill just make a unique final closing post on each blog to give each character the closure they need. not sure yet. but for right now, ill leave it here.

i love you all, and im really grateful to all of you for being my friends. keep drawing, keep playing with your ocs like dolls, and have a wonderful life.

Have you always been interested in creating art? Kinda? No? Not sure. I think I've always been interested in art in the 'wow, thats cool' way, not really creating though.

What's your favourite medium to use? If digital, what programs do you like? I taught myself to draw on digital (wacom intus medium i still use) and have the free program firealpaca - im too lazy to change now. I've owned sketchbooks to take with me and it's good but I don't think I'll ever really get over not having the command + z tool.

Do you create outside of fandom? A little, I've got ocs who I draw occasionally.

Do you do art in a professional setting? No, not really. I've done comms in the past and I was going to go do animation in uni, but found that i like to keep my creating up to me. I would be open to run comms again, but under a different structure I think.

((I decided to rebrand this blog, a lot of the lore would stay canon (Like sebastians existence) and other things wont (Like revived nightwing arc) . My way of roleplay wont change, neither Babs personality.

But like, i need a rebranding to keep going. I love this blog, but after revisiting my first posts i realized i was living to post for something its not gonna come back. Most of the blogs i interacted with are deleted or doesnt do rp anymore and- it makes me sad in some way (specially after you-know-what where i dont knlw who to interact to because i really dont know anything of what happened)

I get back again at the dilema of deciding if her past relationship was canon, its a tough desision but i realized keeping a blog that would definitely not comeback (again) in her history is holding her back in a lot of ways. Now that Babs is not that pending on Jacyn is a lot easier to think about it.

But i still would like to make some tribute to my friend's blog. I still need to figure out how (amd give a coherent explanation to Sebastian if im removing that part of her lore)

ANYWAY.

Here's the old intro:

It does! The main character ends up unwillingly paired with a 'bodyguard' type character (I can't give too much away), and he's the last man on earth she would have chosen, for reasons.

Turns out they're made for each other. Expect lots of banter, frenemies, genuinely funny and heartfelt growth as a pair, until they become utterly inseparable and massively mutually pining for each other.

In terms of 'leashing' them, no. Their interactions guide their choices, and I write the story around them. For instance, the villain has been forced to alter the way in which he reveals himself, because their shrewd investigations have forced his hand.

The thing is, I knew the plot from the start, in that I knew the bad thing that was happening in this Universe, I knew the creatures they would be fighting and when, and the rest all comes in the minutiae.

I know about 90% more of the wider Universe than goes into the book; there's an element, when writing, that the author always knows more than technically comes in at any given point. This is for a few reasons; 1. Then you know how to use as few words as possible to make your point subtly, and 2. The reader doesn't just want to read a text block of minutiae; best show them the detail, in events and interactions, rather than tell them.

Either way...if you must LEASH your characters to MAKE them tell the story you want it told, does your character have character and autonomy, or are you a god playing with marionettes?

This is a crucial difference between those able to write three dimensional characters with agency, and those who could write anyone, anyone, to shoehorn into a plotline.

Just thoughts...

Not a vent’ asking a question. Out of genuine curiosity do you actually like Terraliens as a species? A majority of CS vent blogs seemingly want the species to die or fail as an end result.

Isn’t the whole point of vent blogs to give people a space to actively point out problems to make the community better as a whole. Reblog to make it die faster or run out of the community feels conflicting to what the blog is actually supposed to achieve. Do you want it to get better? It seems like you do. Or are you actually hoping it gets worse to increase engagement.

So general question would be do you hate Terraliens? What’s the end goal for you? 🤔

this is a loaded question for me at the moment haha

personally, ive been in terras since april 2023, so basically since the start. ive seen every controversy pretty much first hand, was an avid reader of the terra blogs previous to mine, and terras was the first species i put my whole heart in and tried to interact with the community in. initially i really wanted the species to get better, when they had the suggestion threads i was an avid poster

then over and over again mods just kept failing in the simplest of ways. this blog was made february of 2024, a few months after the first psa and ownership change. i still thought terras could be good but there were just too many blockers, esp from coy and civ after learning some behind the scenes info from the psa

then the Reckoning came and i hoped it really would go down, if only that meant making the species totally open

when tycho became owner i really was hopeful considering the facts that previous mods completely disavowed vent blogs like mine, but shortly before he became owner tycho reached out to ask my thoughts on stuff around the species (you can see that in my post about The Reckoning), when the species fell in his lap i honestly thought there was going to be big change. for a while there was, like new assets in the item channels, feedback forms, etc. but then there were also the nagging issues that never went away from before, like hiring friends for staff, weird unspoken rules, and a horrible approval process

for the past few days ive been thinking, man this really doesnt seem like its worth it. the same issues are starting to pop up again, and the mods currently just twist and turn making up their justifications for moving the goalpost. i dont like a lot of the new designs, dont really have any myos i want to make, and im not pulled in by the new events.

my end goal initially when making this blog was that i wanted terras to get better and make the easy changes everyone wanted, but now i think the better course of action would be for it to die. make it an open species and just let people run with it, because over the 2 and a half years of this species there has never once been such an attitude of unity and happiness among terra community than on that one night in april where the species WAS open.

honestly? im days away from voiding all my terras and fucking all the way off (ill still stay in the server though, i couldnt imagine anyone else running this blog and i think its become a necessary place for everyone. i imagine there would be at least some outcry if i were to shut it down, lol). once i finish my current obligations, im trading all my shit. its exhausting to have been doing this back and forth for improvement for over 2 years now, and its just so much more effort than its worth when i could be putting my whole heart into other up-and-coming projects. it hurts when a thing you really loved and found happiness in just has too many glaring issues to ignore

i think its a bad look when most of your oldest members who have been there since near day 1 decide this shit isnt worth it anymore and want to be done with it. its a bad look when someone who cared so much to make full essays about this species on an entire blog dedicated to it decides that its just not worth trying to "fix" anymore.

and i kind of hope a lot of other members come to that same conclusion and cause it to die.

hi!! i just wanted to come say i love your works so much. the way you write sylus is just so good and gut wrenching. all the dynamics you create are so perfect and well-written. also i appreciate the fact that you write non-mc fics because while mc is cool, i adore non-mc fics so much. when i see an update from you it’s a highlight in my day.

your new royalty au fic is just… i can’t get it out of my head. the pain. the angst! the YEARNING!! my poor heart can’t handle it. also i’m curious about the deal that sylus and miss knight made from that line when she was chaining sylus up… and also the mark on her shoulder from earlier… does it have something to do with that blurb you made about dragon!king!sylus in a rut perhaps 🤨🤨 (marking her as his mate?)…

but can we talk about the yearning some more !! the way that everyone in the city, even the nobility from outside the kingdom can see it but the internal conflict for both is so disgustingly beautiful. it’s the way that she always struggles with her oath to protect him and all he wants to do is be able to hold her close and love her!! it’s the desperation in their moment alone after the guards and foreign queen leave!! he SEES her! it’s the way they seem to have so much history together but it’s forbidden because she is bound to him by knight duties, which i’d love to see more of. i want to know how they grew up and everything omg i just love them.

also! i have some questions if it’s not too much:

1. when is the royalty au set?

because like i always kind of think medieval times and there are some things in the story that make me think that just with the prominence of royalty ig (even tho it’s literally a royalty au) but then there are mentions of things like cars so. (also this is not a critique of you i’m just a little confused).

2. i hate to ask bc i know it can get annoying, i just love this one so much too. also im not trying to pressure you or anything like that, but are you still planning on updating carpe noctem?

because that’s the other fic that has a chokehold on me. the money i would pay 😌😌 don’t even get me started. i love the turn of events where assassin!reader doesn’t seem to get that sylus is just waiting for a sign from her that she wants him too because she’s just so hyperfocused on miss hunter! and then speaking of, their kiss and the phone interruptions! but she can’t even be mean with miss hunter because there’s nothing established between sylus and assassin!reader (on top of the closer relationship she has with miss hunter now). it’s the complicated relationship of being at his side as his right hand so long. she’s his but not HIS you know what i mean? ughhh i love it so much so i’m hoping it’s still getting updated.

3. is the limerence series connected to carpe noctem?

because i think a while back, you reblogged one of the chapters for limerence saying like “context for the newest chapter of carpe noctem” and im wondering does that mean the two are connected or was it just like “inspiration” kinda?

also side note, but the limerence series is so sad and i love how it ended. like she kinda went back to him (im thinking of the chapter ‘tempest’ i think). like its lowkey so toxic but just you can understand.

Initially, I tried to reply to you on my phone, but Tumblr's app is so buggy, it only allowed me to post your ask.

I'm a quiet sufferer, which is why I think I derive so much pleasure from writing non-MC stories. I've often been the person behind the scenes, watching the people I care about fall for each other while I'm off to the side with my hands shoved in my pockets, kicking a rock out of the way while they're inadvertently shoving me off the sidewalk with their lovey-doviness. And I have to put on a brave face because at least two good people found each other, even if I don't fit into the equation.

I'm also the biggest yearner. I edge myself so much with fics and sexual tension, it should be criminal. I am a sucker for the forbidden romance trope. That one-sided pining that isn't truly one-sided, but both parties involved are either too stupid to acknowledge they care about each other, or one of them feels like they're unworthy of affection. As you can probably tell, I put a little piece of myself into every fic, so you'll be stuck with blue balls following me. 😅😅😅

Now for your questions:

The setting for serve & protect is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy XV, so it's a bit of a modern-day setting with some futuristic and fantasy elements. I know that's probably convoluted. 😅😅😅 So here's a video to better illustrate the point I'm trying to drive home.

An update for carpe noctem is in the works. I'm grateful you enjoy the story. Did not anticipate the response it received and so many peoples' dependency on it. Again, pouring a bit of myself into the caldron, because I love a good nuanced reader with complicated feelings and relationships and someone who's basically a minefield rigged to blow at the smallest twitch of muscle. Relationships and friendships aren't as clearcut as we want them to be. Sure, we want to be happy, but if you're a sacrificial person and that's all you know, you'll always push yourself to the backburner to make someone else happy.

Carpe noctem is limerence if it went off in a different direction. I consider it something of a spiritual successor. Like, if Sylus didn't right out the gate follow the universe's advice and go for MC. So, think of limerence as Sylus letting fate win, whereas carpe noctem is if he said, "Fuck you, fate."

ty for the questions, glad you like Chevon <3 as usual, im gonna go deranged rambling about this, so everything is put under the cut to avoid clogging everyone's dash

🌠: What is their Afflatus? Why are they associated with that Afflatus?

(I posted these profiles for all members in the spina venatores masterpost if anyone wants to check)

Chevon is a Star arcanist - this thread here (consider giving it a read, its very interesting! a few mutuals of mine wrote it!) talks about how Star arcanists either hide or show themselves to the world, but I like to think that their shared quality that makes them STAR arcanists instead of any other type of Afflatus is that dreamy-like vibe they have going on

They're all characters who have their eyes set on really big goals, who can easily be described as peculiar or quirky because they don't seem quite "down to earth" - I just woke up so I don't know how to explain it in detail but!! They're dreamy-like but very strong in their convictions; Regulus' passion for music, living the life of a radio pirate which is a whole adventure on its own; Baby Blue's love for Wonderland, to the point where she rejects reality to live the life of her dreams; Matilda, who wants nothing more than to be the best, to the point where it literally looks like she's living in a different genre of game altogether than the rest of characters like Sonetto or Vertin...

Star arcanists, to me, are stars themselves - they burn bright and sometimes their fire may fade out, but there's no denying that they all lead extremely unique lives, that they all feel so very far away because of their convictions, morals or goals. There ARE aspects of concealing and hiding like the thread talks about, but I feel like that could be recontextualized better as a disconnect between their reality and their ideal way of life.

I'll probably regurgitate and rewrite this better in my writing blog, but characters like Blonney, Charlie and Voyager - there's that disconnect. Blonney, who pretended to be someone she's not in more ways than one but whose passion for horror was the indirect catalyst for the WHOLE event in 1.2. Charlie, who does NOT have the heart nor confidence for theatre, but who becomes an entirely different person on stage. Voyager, who is an actual fucking alien, the disconnect can't get any more literal with her.

So in the context of Chevon being a Star arcanist, I like to think that all of this applies!

His whole thing is that the disconnect between his body and his heart, the way he was born as and the way he feels like, are unbearable. He's one huge metaphor for being transgender, but his character focuses more on the dysmorphia rather than the dysphoria! The feeling of massive dissatisfaction with one's body, not due gender, but because none of it matches the idea in your head

This is a lot of word vomit to say that Chevon developed an arcanum that could allow him NOT to change his body and shapeshift like Veal does, BUT to transfer his consciousness into someone else's body. That's why his medium is "Rebirth".

He's a Star arcanist because he's fully convinced that there is a way to preserve life in a perfect state between life and death, as to never die and never truly live. He has this dreamy quality to him, like he knows something you don't but is very polite about it, a gentle and a little whimsical vibe that clearly tells you this guy is not to be trusted, but you'll take the risk anyway because of the allure and the softness he has. But that's only because of his appearance, the most recent body that he stole - because his personality is just as rotten as the rest of Spinas.

🎶: What’s a song you associate with them? (And why?)

SO FAR I ONLY HAVE... TWO PLAYLISTS, one for Venison and another for the general vibe of Spina Venatores - BUT. BUT. I know that the songs I'll assign to Chevon need to have this very specific vibe to them

One that comes to mind right away is "Flood on the Floor - Purity Ring" - it has that VIBE and the lyrics vaguely remind me of Chevon's dynamic with Necrologist, the one person who had to constantly "bury" him over and over as he perfected his body-hopping arcanum. I like to think that a LOT of the tombstones in her museum are from his many different, short-lived identities

Ohh, I'd like to talk about Chevon's relationship with the other members of Spina Venatores but I think that would take. SO LONG. hmm. I'll settle for a fun fact then!

All members of Spina Venatores have ONE single detail that is never disclosed nor that they ever want to remember, which is essentially the root of their entire character - for Venison, it's their full birth name. For Mutton, is the first woman she loved and married. For Poultry, it's her roots and life as a human. For Veal, it's their original voice.

For Chevon, it's his original appearance - his "first life" so to speak, everything related to it. His gender, his skin color, his hair, his eyes, all of it is lost.

This single detail is something that all members have willingly discarded, forgot or avoid even thinking about to extreme measures, it's the root of their denial. It's also the one thing that each character related to them (Pavia for Venison, Schneider's sister for Mutton, Necrologist for Mutton, etc) knows.

When it comes to Chevon's original life and body, Necrologist is the last person alive who knows how he used to look. She was there when they took his lifeless body and she designed the tombstone for him herself. I like to think that she spend many, many months waiting to hear from his spirit, his last regrets and final wishes, but he never appeared - not sure how it goes from here, or how this affects their relationship in detail, but yeah! <3
