hey there! so, im making a character who's Black, anddd i need help with them. badly so.

(sorry in advance bc this character isnt That developed or at least not as much as other OCs i have)

alright, they're an afab teen under the non-binary umbrella (im not sure on what gender i should give them). they're in a friend group with two other teens, one of whom found out she's trans, and that made them go like "wait maybe im not cis". they live in an extremely conservative christian town, and they're one of the few black kids there (it's an awful place to live, i make that very clear), which makes it so that they're not very connected with LGBTQ not POC communities - which is why their friend was the one who introduced queerness to them. they're the quietest of their friend group, quite autism coded but i dont think I'll really specify it, and they're a pretty normal kid all things considered (a bit of a self-insert personality wise lol)

when i first thought this character's gender arc, as the story will be very visual (animatics probably), i thought of them experimenting with gender by trying on their older brother's clothes. seeing they like how it looks, they decide to pick up a pack of scissors and cut their hair themself.

now, i remembered "oh fuck, POC usually don't like to have their hair messed with do they?" (i have read a bunch of posts abt that so im 99% certain lol-), then noticed how white the whole arc looks (i need more contact with POC i live in White Hell i have no other reference ;;), and that kinda discouraged me from writing them to the point i almost scrapped the whole character arc and even the concept- which is also why they're not as developed as they should be.

now, the actual question! how to write their transition arc, while also remaining respectful and realistic? also, have you noticed anything in this ask that's kinda fucked up, and how can i fix it if so? im doing my best to represent many groups of ppl with my OCs and i want to be accurate sorry if this ask is very long ;;

So first, I deeply want to apologize for how late I am on answering this. I didn't want to answer without being informed, but I also know how much you want advice.

First, if this character is Black, say "Black" not "POC". Even in your head, start making that decision to be specific every time. We have a specific identity, we are not every man, and it's annoying to be referred to so generally when we have an identity.

For the hair part, check out this lesson. If your character decided to cut their hair off themselves, then it's not exactly an issue- it's their hair! It'd be different if it was someone they didn't know and trust touching their hair. You may feel free to refer to my entire syllabus if you want to do the reading to see if there's anything else you may have missed!

As for your question on their transition, this is the part that I was wavering on answering, because I'm currently doing the reading myself for a lesson I'm writing. So at the moment, all I can really say is to read narratives about and by Black trans people, and what that meant for them! That's a cool list I just found, I'm gonna save it for later as a reference.

It's not going to be received the same way as a white person transitioning, no; perception of gender identity and expression are going to be different depending on who's looking. For example, what does 'Black androgyny' look like to white people if they already believe that we have 'masculine' features? Thus the existence of the term 'stud'. Or how long hair is deemed feminine, but there are plenty of Black and Indigenous people whose hair growth is essential to their identity and has nothing to do with "making them girly".

I think what I plan on getting into more detail on in my lesson- and what you'll need to understand- is that following or even subverting gender "norms" is dependent upon what those cultural norms are, and how they might conflict at times. So to write a respectful narrative, you're going to have to understand what it means to live at that intersection. I hope this all made sense 😅 this is why I'm not confident in that lesson yet.

The RENEGADES were the ones breaking away from that idea, they were hope, they were trying to help people in a landscape where that was pretty discouraged. If on the same night one of their best friends died, a family they promised to protect was murdered, AND one of them FOUND a baby COVERED IN BLOOD that would not go unnoticed

they ALREADY KNOW these powers can bring people back to life they know about Oscar surviving because of his powers!

mmmaybe? like i do have a couple of ideas, but nothing too concrete. one idea involved the reader being, well, the mother of monsters and the butcher would probably become more monstrous over time because of the silent hill related plot reasons. thing is, the reader wouldn't know there were changes at all, being too addicted to the butcher's to pay attention. I'm being very vague on this one because...idk how to communicate the story yet, if at all.

the other one might involve incest though, because of the monsters the reader birthed cooperating with the butcher, under the god's order. this one is just...a concept more than anything though because tentacles are fun.

Even though the last one wasn't very common, it happened once in a while. Especially with CBI Agent Teresa Lisbon.

Now you couldn't blame Teresa, she has been nothing but an angel, but the big little green monster visited you everything he was a bit to friendly with her. For example now.

You were called to a crime scene, as normal, but this time it was a very brutal murderer, a young girl barely 19 years old, was hanging from the wall, bound by the wrists and ankles, a sack over her head and tape placed over the ends of the plastic bag, making sure the girl can't breathe. Her body littered in bruises and marks, as well as a tiny white spot next to her underwear.

It took you as suprise that your best friend and boss were arriving together, especially dressed like this. She in high heels and a rather fine outfit and he in one of his usual suits. It took every ounce of self control to not ask about their appearance, or why they were arriving together and it took everything I you to not grab Jane and pull him into a kiss, just to show Lisbon to whom he belongs, even though he wasn't your boyfriend, no he was just your best friend.

Jane took a look around the room before musing, "Well look at her, doesn't she look breathtaking." Lisbon and Y/n ignored him and continued to search the crime scene for any evidence. He was astounded. How could a human be so clever and pretty at once. He didn't even needed to listen to you to know that you were to 99% right, about whatever you were saying (not that he was anyways, he was to busy ogling them).

After Y/n finished their rant, they began to interview a few of the neighbours, as well as the janitor who found the girl. Now a little while later, Y/n was checking their alibis, they got a call. Abandoning their computer, they turned to the mobile phone on her desk, flipping it over, so that the display was facing them they read the Caller ID. Seeing an unidentified number didn't concern them, as it wasn't the first time a random person thought it would be funny to play a joke on them or that somebody simply typed in the wrong number.

Swiping across the screen they answered, "L/n?", the only thing they heard was a robotic voice, barely understandable saying, "You only have a few minutes time, until the ticking stops and instead of a bell ringing, there will be ringing ears."

Y/n begin to panic, tipping frantically on their computer, trying to trac down from where the call was made, but to no luck. So they began to think.

Ticking, bell ringing, ears, ticking, bell ringing, ears, tic- A BOMB! Oh no, oh no, that is not good. Ok Y/n, think where could it be, where could it be bells ringin, A CHURCH, allright nearest Church, nearest Church, ah California Community Church. Good, wonderful, now you just have to inform the others and get there as soon as possible.

Standing up they frantically searched for their contact list, dialling Lisbon.

"Lisbon." the familiar females voice could be heard over the piece of electronic. "Lisbon, you need to evacuate the California Community Church, ASAP! We don't have much time until the bomb explodes." "BOMB?! What bomb are you talking about Y/n?" "I got a call, from an anonymous number, it gave me some sort of riddle. It was about some ringing and bells and WHATEVER... isn't important now, what is important is to get the people out of the Church!" "Allright I see what I can do." "Thank you."

Finally reaching the car, Y/n opened the drivers seed, before buckling in and driving off.

Having reached the church they immediately noticed the people surrounding the 'house of god' and a mother shouting for her kid, they're instincts kicked in and they ran towards the mother, who quickly turned and rambled, "You need to help me! M-my daughter is still in there. I can't lose her p-please you need to help me." Not even thinking Y/n replied, "Of course, where were you and your daughter before you got separated?" "We w-were in the main room and t-then suddenly there was this person wh-who told us we h-had to get out and so many people a-and my baby oh God wha-" "Ma'am I need you to stay calm. I am going in there and I can't promise anything, but I am going to try my best to bring you your daughter back."

Departing from the mother they made their way inside the evacuated building in hope to find the missing girl. Running around in the spacious room, they searched everywhere with their eyes, until they saw a brown mop of hair cowering behind one of the banks. Having made their to the little girl they scooped up the scared bundle and began to walk back to the entrance as fast as possible. Finally reaching the double doors, Y/n tried to shift the weight of the girl on one of their hips, to open the doors, these turned out rather difficult, as the child clung to them like a koala to his mother. After fumbling a little with the door, they had it open and slipped through it.

Jogging through the grave yard, they were halfway through it as suddenly a loud explosion sound could be heard. Y/n shielded the kid by wrapping around it, forming a kind of shield, absorbing all the flying debris.

Shortly before the explosion Patrick and Teresa arrived the church, immediately beginning to question the civilians and searching unconsciously for Y/n.

As the explosion went of, both were already informed by the mother who asked Y/n earlier if they could rescue her child, that Y/n was apparently in the church. This set panic in Patrick of, he couldn't lose you. You were the only constant thing in his life; always there for him, always willing to help him with his search about Red John and always helping him with everything, not even questioning it you were sure he had good reasons.

You couldn't leave him.

He loved you to much to let you go. But it appeared that fate had something else planned.

Or did it?

Turnst out fate had a different ending in mind for him. An ending with the limping person, which was stumbling on the path from church to street.

Patrick didn't even hesitate as he ran towards you, taking the child from your arms and letting you lean onto him, so you wouldn't fall on the way to the medics.

Giving the young girl to a nearby standing police officer, Patrick dragged you alongside him, towards the ambulance, where you would get checked out.

A little while after getting checked, Jane stood next to you, wringing his hands nervously, before he was snapped out of his state, by the loud nearby shutting of a door. Taking a deep breath Patrick tries to organise his thoughts for a final time, before he began to speak; "Y/n I-realized that I-i f-felt a certain way and i-i haven't felt like this since Angela, when you were i-in there and t-that thing blew up, i-i was s-so scared, that I would lose you t-to. A-and I d-didn't s-so I think that it's a s-sign t-that I can talk to you now and i-i wanted to do this for a long time."

Cradling your face in his hands, Patrick searched your face for any sign of hesitation. After he didn't fine any, he slowly leaned forward, until his lips hovered over yours. You took the final step, tilting your head back and connecting your lips. Even as your lips were barely touching you both could feel it.

It was like an Exlposion.

i have extreme attachment issues and i hate it when i get left on seen by my best friends when we're having a normal conversation. my heart always starts to beat really fast and im always scared of losing them to the point where ill spam them and ask them if ive done something wrong when in reality i did nothing wrong. i dont know how to stop feeling this way. can u pls give ur advice?

Not us twinning! While I won't spam my friends, I do suffer in silence with my anxiety and overthinking. It's a process but I've slowly been reminding myself that my friends have busy lives that don't revolve around me and 99% of the time, things aren't personal. I'm pretty sure it stems from my unpacked abandonment issues (when I finally start therapy it's going to be a wild ride I can tell you that). It helps to find more interests and hobbies and even friends. Even though I technically have a life, idk. I really would put my friends before everything. Literally text them back while I'm at work or even if I'm on a trip. I could be hiking a fucking mountain and if I had reception, I'm texting them back 😭 it's something I'm still working on too but just reminding yourself that it's not personal and malicious 90% of the time helps. Especially when I myself know what it's like to feel overwhelmed and can't even compute to reply to people sometimes

hello! your zutara posting today has finally motivated me to ask this question because I came to atla very late(last year, to be specific) and I Love It Very Much but am 1000% out of the loop as far as why what remains of fandom (at least that I've seen among my friends) is so very strongly zutara. I'm not opposed to it per se I just don't really know what has driven it to apparently be such a popular ship? can you help me understand and maybe convert me a little bit?

This got so long, I’m so sorry. I don’t know how to put it under a cut on mobile and it already got deleted once so I’m scared to mess with it lol. Moving on.

I’m gonna start this with a disclaimer that im on mobile so formatting is tricky and I’m also really new to atla in that I only completed my first watch through in like 2019??? So some of my info is all just based on what I’ve picked up from Discourse 👀 so anyway the sparknotes version: zutara was wildly popular from the beginning. To the point where the atla crew internally disagreed on which ship should be endgame. (Ex. Bryke [showrunners] asked the writers to rewrite The Southern Raiders to make Zuko seem less ideal for Katara than Aang [which failed, depending on who you ask]; the animation team purposefully created a visual parrallel between Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se in the Crossroads of Destiny; etc.)

The ship was popular enough that Bryke actually chose to display zk fanart at a con for the sole purpose of mocking the fans, but that’s neither here nor there. The entire episode Ember Island Players, while a love letter to/parody of the whole show, was an opportunity to address zutara’s viability as a canon pairing (while, again, mocking zutaras for romanticizing that catacombs scene). Point is! It’s always been popular but with it not being endgame, there’s got to be something that’s given it staying power.

And that’s honestly got to do with three things: their dynamic, thematic cohesion, and potential.

(You know what... you know what, it’s four things. The fourth is they’re so aesthetically pleasing together and individually. Like, they’re just good looking people [specifically when they’re grown but they’re also cute kids] and that absolutely doesn’t hurt) (but it’s not the Point, it’s just nice to point out sometimes)

The dynamic is hard to get into without also looking at the canon pairings, but I think I can do that without unnecessary bashing. It’s just that part of the magic of zutara is really highlighted by what they give to each other that their other relationships don’t.

First off, it’s classic enemies to (would be) lovers. The absolute truest form of it. It’s not too different from how CS started out: a rogue antagonist with a job to do—but no personal vendetta against the future love interest—who is deeply and emotionally invested in his personal storyline (revenge/redemption) with little regard for how it effects other people after his entire life and genuine good nature are marred by suffering, and a fierce warrior girl with a strong moral compass and her own personal investment in stopping him (protect her family and save the world doing it). Obviously frustration and animosity grew between them by the nature of them being on opposing sides, but that just lends itself to the sweetness of their later reconciliation.

The thing is that while they’re wildly different on the surface (he’s a hot-headed prince of a fascist regime who is trying to capture the Avatar to please his father; she’s a nurturing daughter of the chief who is trying to protect and train the Avatar in order to topple his father’s throne) they find out that they have so much more in common both in their experiences and their personalities.

(What follows is an excessive use of the word “both” and I’m sorry about that)(I can edit it. I can do that. That IS an option............)

They both have an innate sense of justice that they are determined to see done (zuko, at the war meeting, sticking up for the Earth Kingdom kid when the guards torment his family, choosing not to steal from the pregnant couple despite his circumstances, abiding by his word to leave the SWT should Aang come willingly, etc.; katara, literally.... at any point). They both have pretty one-track minds at accomplishing certain goals once they’ve put their mind to it, regardless of a lack of support in that endeavor (it goes without saying I guess, but zuko’s entire hunt; katara’s determination to get the earth benders to fight back, her determination to absolutely destroy Pakku until he agrees to teach her, etc.). They both lost their mothers at young ages. Their worlds are war-torn and traumatizing to them both, if in different ways, but that ultimately forces them to grow up too quickly to be wholly independent individuals. They both have issues with their fathers (for WILDLY different reasons, but). They both hold extreme prejudices that they need to learn to overcome (which ties into thematic cohesion)(bit like Lizzie and Darcy in that way but magnified by a million). They’re both extremely emotional and empathetic—which can and often does result in loud outbursts. Katara’s a bit better adjusted and can temper her anger for longer than S1 Zuko can, but they both feel that anger deeply and have no compunctions expressing it (Katara is, usually, more justified, particularly in S1. Again, S1 Zuko is severely maladjusted but at the point when they could’ve feasibly become a couple, he’s so much better off with the way he carries himself). They both struggle with feelings of inferiority in their bending abilities when confronted with prodigal benders like Aang and Azula, but have the work ethic required to double down and become two of the most powerful benders in the three remaining nations. This is a little more minor but it is a parrallel that appeals to some shippers that they both have these alter egos in the Painted Lady (notably fire nation coded) and the Blue Spirit (water tribe coded) that are pretty different from who they are day-to-day and are useful in accomplishing a purpose that they as themselves cannot.

(I’m.... I just realized that this could potentially get very long. Should I have made a slide show with bullet points??????)

Anyway, similar. I know there’s more but there’s literally so much to love about zutara that I’ll drive myself a little crazy trying to compile all the ways they’re similar. (Just gonna say that at this exact moment I went back to add more similarities.... so okay then)

Once they’ve reconciled, we see how all of these things only lend themselves to a deeper intimacy together than they share with literally anyone else. There’s a steady partnership that positions them as the mom/dad of the gaang, while also providing the support necessary to allow the other to not have to carry so much responsibility. A lot of zutaras will point out how zuko is actually depicted doing the more domestic chores that are normally relegated to Katara once he joins the gaang, since the others in the group are two 12-year-olds and sokka. The one that sticks out the most is how he makes tea for the group and then serves them, while Katara is able to just relax with her friends around the fire. Fanon expands upon this a lot to Zuko helping with the laundry or the cooking or whatever else needs doing since he, as a once-refugee, is used to doing his own domestic tasks. Before Zuko joined, Katara was the one mothering everyone, sewing for them, cooking for them, etc. She’s always tending to the needs of the group, and that includes emotionally. She does the emotional labor for the gaang 99% of the time, but when she’s the one falling apart, she’s usually doing it alone and without the comfort that she normally provides for others. Until Zuko. And that’s before they’re even friends.

Which is WHY people romanticize the catacombs of Ba Sing Se so much. Katara is verbally attacking Zuko out of her own righteous anger but also her own prejudice when Zuko, surprisingly, chooses to be vulnerable with her. He’s been on a journey that’s opened his eyes a bit, but he’s never actively chosen to expose the rawest parts of his past to anyone. But for some reason he chooses to do that with Katara of all people. While she’s yelling at him. He sees her humanity, and for once can look past his prejudice and empathize with her. And this time, when she breaks down, she gets to be comforted. Katara normally talks about her mother when she’s trying to explain to someone else that she sees and understands they’re pain, as a form of comfort to them. Here, Zuko uses the exact same tactic. He sees her and he understands. And for zuko? He’s not being shut down. He’s allowed to articulate his pain regarding his mother without being ignored and made to internalize it, and he’s allowed to process how he feels about his scar out loud without being told that he deserved it. And then he lets her touch his scar, something we’ve seen him actively avoid before. He’s completely open to her and she’s completely open to him and all it took was one five minute conversation. She was about to use the little bit of Spirit water that she had, that she was saving for something Important, to heal the scar that still daily causes him pain just because they had, somehow, connected.

Plus there’s the whole parallel to the star-crossed lovers forbidden from one another, a war divides their people—

And then zuko messes up, he regresses, he gets what he wants and he HATES it. And the sense of justice he had as a child has been restored to him against his will and he can’t think of anything he wants to do more than the Right Thing, so he joins team avatar. Before he does that though, we get to see his relationship with Mai, which is where comparison really comes in. And what we see is Zuko, fresh off of his encounter with Katara in the catacombs, trying to be emotionally honest with Mai... and getting shut down and dismissed. Which is just how Mai is and it’s fine, but not for Zuko. Still, he keeps trying, and he keeps getting ignored or scoffed at or yelled at. Which is really a larger symbol for how he doesn’t fit in his old life anymore, but again that’s about thematic cohesion. He tries to articulate his anxieties about returning home, he tries to make romantic gestures, he tries to explain how morally conflicted he’s feeling—and Mai diverts to some kind of physical affection to shut him up and a parting comment that is pretty much always, in essence, “I don’t wanna talk about this.” So they don’t. On the other hand, once zuko and Katara are friends, we see him again emotionally distraught and caught up in his anxieties about facing Iroh, and it’s Katara who comes to him and listens to him and comforts and encourages him.

Similarly, we have Aang clamming up and getting uncomfortable whenever Katara shows any negative emotion, usually resulting in him making excuses or running away. Or, in the case of the Southern Raiders, lecturing her on how she needs to just let go of her anger about her mother’s murder. People have talked this episode to death and usually better than I ever could, so imma... keep it brief. There’s a serious disconnect between Aang and Katara in his ability to empathize with Katara and her needs that has her tamping down her vulnerability and amping up her anger. He tells her that he was able to forgive his people’s genocide and appa’s kidnapping (petnapping? Theft??), which is blatantly not true but also not an entirely equal parrallel to Katara’s situation, and continues making these little remarks throughout the episode. But it’s Zuko that Katara opens up to. It’s with him that she’s able to talk about the most traumatic day of her life, and it’s with him that she’s able to get the closure she needs, cementing their bond as friends and partners. This disagreement between Aang and Katara is then... never resolved. They just never bring it up and hear what the other is saying.

There’s a fic called The Portraits of Ember Island that has a line that so completely sums up the heart of the matter for why people love their dynamic. For context, zuko has woken up early to help Katara with the cooking and they spend the whole time just letting one another talk, and zuko stops to ask why she always just lets him talk. And so she stops to ask why he’s always helping, and it goes as follows:

There’s just... so much mutual support! Trust! Intimacy!! And it just continues like that from the Southern Raiders on, listening to each other, advising each other, watching each other’s backs! And then! Literally saving each other’s lives!! I will never be over the last Agni kai. Not ever. Zuko may have been willing to jump in front of lightning for anyone, but he actually did it for Katara. And in a show, that’s the thing that really matters. It’s a fulfilled trope usually exclusively applied to romantic pairings, and it ended up applying to Zuko and Katara. And then she ran out into the middle of a fight with tunnel vision just to get to him.

Also!! Also Zuko pushing Katara out of the way of the falling rocks at the Western Air Temple!! And Katara catching him as he fell from the war balloon that he fought Azula on!! Before they’re even getting along, they’re the ones reaching for each other. They come to this place of equal ground, as partners, who watch each other’s backs, call each other out but still listen attentively and understand, and provide the support that the other has been sorely lacking up until they knew each other (whether that be from lack of effort or lack of understanding from others, or an unwillingness to accept it for themselves).

Then, trailing along under the surface of this, we see the themes of the show totally embodied by Zuko and Katara as individuals and in their relationship to one another. There’s a YouTuber, sneezyreviews, who has a, like, 2-hour explanation on why she not only loves zutara but also believes that their endgame would’ve actually elevated the writing of atla to new levels particularly because of thematic cohesion and resolved character arcs. It’s the zutara dissertation I never knew I needed, and it’s funny and eloquent and effective, so I’m just going to sum up her section on thematic cohesion to the best of my abilities and then link it for whenever you have the time. And I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want a full understanding of what makes zutara so great and gives it such longevity.

Guru pathik has a line that goes something like this: separation is an illusion; things that seem different are just two parts of the same whole. Iroh also tells Zuko something similar: balance and strength are achieved when the different nations come together and influence one another and celebrate what makes them each unique. And this lesson is a massive central arc that both Zuko and Katara go through, moving past a black-and-white, good guys-vs-bad guys, us-vs-them mentality and into a greyer, more nuanced view of the world. Zuko sees the fire nation from an entirely new perspective and while he still loves and hopes for his nations future, he surrenders his blind loyalty to them in exchange for an unflinching loyalty to peace and love. Katara too had to come to terms with the fact that cruel people exist in the earth kingdom and water tribes, while some fire nation citizens are just regular, kind people who also need and deserve to have someone speak on their behalf. And this is honed in directly on how they view each other. They grow in their individual journeys to be open to the humanity in the other and then, once they’ve found that, they’re able to grow more in compassion for others in a beautiful feedback loop. And this is all matched in the symbolism repeatedly and intentionally associated with them in canon: sun and moon, fire and water, yin and yang, Oma and Shu who found love despite their warring nations. Their individual arcs are completed in each other and complement the themes of atla beautifully.

The canon pairs... just don’t. Which, again, is fine. But the very things that give atla longevity and popularity are anchored in zutara. Kat@ang doesn’t accomplish this. They’re... nice. Sweet. Especially when you erase a good portion of their interactions in S3. It could’ve been just a sweet love story. (Personally, the dynamic between toph and aang accomplish the same thing that zutara does, with complementary personalities that fulfill the theme of opposites blending in harmony) M@iko, on the other hand, is less sweet but I think wasn’t even supposed to last. Zuko’s relationship with Mai seems to represent his relationship with his old life as a whole. He can’t be emotionally vulnerable, he’s goaded into abusing his privileges, his agency and opinions aren’t respected. They just don’t have common ground with which to discuss anything that matters, so they don’t. As far as themes, the relationship doesn’t fit with atla. It’s zuko returning to and sticking with what is (on the surface) like him, what’s expected. Fire nation with fire nation. Fluid water bender with the flexible air bender. Like with like, separated from what is different and challenging and complementary.

And all of these things combined of course lead to the potential for the ship. I don’t know how familiar you are with the post-atla canon but... well, miss “I will never turn my back on people who need me”, miss “I don’t want to heal! I want to fight!” ends up living quietly in the SWT as a designated healer who turns a blind eye to the water tribe civil war happening right outside her front door. Which can be fine! People change! Some people just wanna stay inside. I just wanna stay inside! But the potential future for zutara is so much more satisfying, with Katara becoming the most unconventional Fire Lady the uppity old cads who are stuck on the old ways have ever seen. Fanon has her serving as a voice for the other nations within a kingdom at the point of its biggest political upheaval, as a confidante to Zuko who can actually help him while he’s trying to figure out how to move forward and make reparations. They have the opportunity, together, to accomplish what they both have set on their hearts to fight for: positive change that lends itself to harmony and balance. And the steambabies! A popular headcanon is that their firstborn daughter, the crown princess, is actually a waterbender, which causes such an uproar among the people who are adamantly clinging to the old ways. It’s just a future full of potential to be forces for good together, full of trust, intimacy, joy. The exact era of peace and love and balance that zuko announces that he intends to ring in with the start of his reign as Fire Lord is, again, magnified by the very personal zutara relationship. And we love to see it.

tl;dr zutara isn’t for everyone. Some people just don’t vibe with it. Some are nostalgic. Some love the canon they grew up with. Some have been disappointed for years. Some just see themselves in other characters and want their happiness instead. Whatever the reason, that’s fine. But for me, I love the way these two, from the moment they give each other a fair chance, are able to lower their walls and prejudices to see the other for the kindred spirits they are. They see each other’s humanity, and their response is to pour out love and support and compassion. I love that they’re a power couple in battle. I love the symbolism and, honestly, soulmatism that colors their every interaction. I love that they embody the whole storyline of atla in their relationship and how it develops, which is notably why their seasonal arcs always culminate in each finale with how they relate to one another. I love that zuko adopting a waterbending move is what actually saves his life and then katara’s. I love the chemistry! And I love the future they could’ve had, instead of the ones they were given.

So, in conclusion: I just think they’re neat and I hope you do too, at least a little bit. Even if it’s just respectfully from a disinterested distance cause you do you. And now here is the video I mentioned. I’m sorry this post got so long and then I gave you an even longer homework assignment, but I can’t recommend it enough. She says it all better than I can.

My #1 post of 2022

Something that fully healthy people don't really seem to understand about chronic health issues is what running on an energy deficit is like long-term.  It's more exhausting than you can possibly imagine if you haven't experienced it.

How does that work? Well, it's sort of like this. Everybody has a certain amount of energy.  When you're healthy and well-rested, you feel pretty good.  There are artificial boosters that give you more energy, too.  You can do all sorts of stuff.

When you get tired, you can still do some stuff but you can't do as much and what you can do might suffer from lack of energy. Except that's essentially your every day existence with chronic health issues.  You go to sleep tired, and wake up tired--sometimes more tired!

Your energy levels rarely reach "full"--that is, there's few points where you are in a "well rested" state where you feel pretty good and have "normal" levels of energy.  You're *always* operating in "low battery" mode rather than being fully charged, and you drain *fast*.

This makes doing basic tasks much harder than need be--things that drain a little energy you notice a hell of a lot more when you're already dead tired than when you're well-rested.  Like how when your phone drops from 10% to 9% you notice more than from 100% to 99%.

You can do some stuff--but you have an upper limit of what you can do that's a lot lower than other people. And functioning while running against a deficit at all times means a *lot* of careful, conservative planning to husband your strength for when you need it most.

It means sometimes spending 30 minutes deliberating what you should buy when you reach the store because you're trying to guess "will I have the energy to prepare this food after shopping?  Will I later this week?"  You hedge your bets when you can.

It means skipping out on a lot of stuff you'd otherwise love to do because you just can't be sure you'll have the energy to do it without landing yourself in bed for the next 3 days by pushing yourself to collapse. It's depressing. And it's exhausting.

Hey, I wanna talk about Crow's and Byron's possible relationship

First of all, them being the only two out of 47 characters that can use poison is already pretty suspicious in on itself. But that could be brushed off as juts a coincidence. Barley's and Emz's weapons work pretty simarly to and they don't have anything in common

Except for this

In one of his skins (Specifically White Crow) Crow has a snake symbol in his back. And its not just any snake symbol

Byron's potion have the exact same one

To me this is too many coincidences in one place for it not to mean anything.

So now imma go to the more headcanon-y part of this. Im 99% sure Crow used to work for Byron at some point (Work for, not with cuz lets be real Byron wouldn't). Im not sure of what he did for him, maybe he killed people for him (I headcanon that Crow was an assasin for hire before Starr Park), but Byron probably paid him by teaching him how to use and make his own venoms.

(Also the style of the clothes that white crow wears is waaaayyyy too similar to Byron's. With the jacket, the boots, the belts, the small gold/silver details. I like to think that he made him wear it like it was a uniform or smth so they could match.)

But, as we can see in game, neither Byron Nor Crow acnowledge that the other one exists, wich leads me to believe that one of the two betrayed the other (Probably Byron cuz, well, he is like that) and they parted ways after that, for them to accidentally reunite at Starr Park.

But there is a small problem with this theory

White Crows is missing an eye, while the normal Crow (Presumably the one in the present) has both of them intact.

Now, it wouldn't be hard for me to believe that Byron would try to get him to fake having a missing eye just to impress people (Again, im like 99. 99% sure Byron was a theatre kid), but Crow really doesn't seem like the type to do that.

So does that mean that Crow would work for Byron in the future? Or that his normal skin isn't the one with his current appereance. It wouldn't be the first time that was the case, since Bandita Shelly

let me just start off and say you're not appropriating anything at all -- you're reidentified. the word is there for you to take on if you'd like because, like myself, i identified as trans for so many years and then stopped once i detransitioned. you're not appropriating anything so don't feel the need to worry over it, okay?

it's hard in the start to get going + there is is such a huge push from people and media and society nowadays to transition. i still struggle with thinking i need to go back to transitioning even though i know it's not what i want/need yet the struggle is still there to do it. there is so much pressure and i can understand the feeling like you need to for other people and not yourself. also the admitting you were wrong is always what seems to be the hardest thing. it sounds like you were able to admit it was wrong to yourself which is good, but still worried about other people.

it's hard to go back to something you thought was wrong in the beginning, doing something you think would fix the problem, but the solution turns out to be the wrong. it's completely normal to feel the regret, to feel foolish, to know you were wrong -- that's all normal.

i still have moments where i think, "why the hell did i do this? why didn't i get help for x and x instead?". i thought my parents would do the i told you so, but they were very relieved and supportive of my decision. i did get some push back from the doctor i saw for hormones but did not let her get to me. i was as sure as you were when it came to transitioning, that i knew it was right blah blah blah, and when it turns out to be wrong it kind of crashes down on you.

what you're feeling is okay and normal right now. it's hard, but i am here for you ♡ the people who bullied you were never in the right and you never have to think they were in the right. you're not giving them power at all. there is no shame in going back to womanhood. in fact, you don't have to change anything other than being reidentified. how you dress, what you like, what you do -- all can be the same. don't feel like you have to do this alone because there are other people who are here to help as well.

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so...

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term.But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

 I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the 'ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.

There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.

It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like... tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.

They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff. 

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

hi i'm pretty sure my parents are abusive but im not really sure because it seems like normal stuff but when i think about events isolated i'm like that's definitely not okay but saying they're abusive seems like saying they're bad and i feel ungrateful and selfish and like im overreacting for that? i don't know they had things a lot worse than us and they think they're doing a good job and i'm grateful to them for a lot of things but i feel like i'm just being bratty for caring? idk (part 1)

( part two ) i just want to know if some behaviors are abusive i guess? and if they're abusive to a point where it's rational to care? idk i sound annoying and nonsensical im sorry this is mostly revolving around csa because it's what bothers me most so i was sexually abused as a child and i don't think my parents know about it but at the same time i feel like how could they not? i don't want to blame them for being clueless because i never told them but as a young child i was hypersexual

( part three ) in a sort of mild way, i watched porn and they found out, i also talked about sex a few times but every time i did they would get really upset and whoop me so i stopped. i was really young though and i don't understand how it wasn't a red flag for them? it seems almost neglectful? i can recognize other patterns of abusive objectively, like i can think about my mom beating me and whether or not i want to label her abusive i realize that's not okay for a parent to do but

first off don’t worry about not specifying the end--i only ask for the sake of clarity, and you didn’t know beforehand, so there’s really no worries))

to answer your first question, yes, some behaviors are absolutely abusive no matter what, such as physically harming your child, or neglecting to feed or clothe your child if you are monetarily able. this is not an exhaustive list, im just giving some examples. there are behaviors that may be abusive in some cases, but not in others, or are abusive when done by some people but not others, or to some people but not others, that kind of thing. but everything you’ve described is concretely either abusive or neglectful or both.

the signs of csa in young kids are honestly...pretty obvious for the most part. like, it’s clear that something is deeply wrong, even if it’s not clear what. so if a parent misses those signs in their young child, then there’s a 99% chance that the parent is being neglectful or abusive. see, a parent probably isn’t going to pay a huge amount of attention to their teen, because they probably don’t need constant supervision, right? but that’s not the case with, say 6 year olds. there’s a reason you dont leave your 6 year old at home alone, and thats because children need constant supervision. they are unable to fend for themselves, and they really don’t have common sense yet. 

so either your parents were not providing the constant supervision that was required (neglect), or they were but didn’t notice (neglect because it’s fucking obvious so they clearly were not paying attention to you, just to whether you were drawing on the walls or not) or they did see signs and then ignored them (abuse--failing to provide medical care, which includes care for psychological issues, is abuse).

and in your case, they did see the signs. do you know, my parents did the exact same thing--i showed obvious signs of csa from a very young age, including watching porn which they found. and then instead of thinking to ask “hey has anyone touched you” or to at least investigate. they yelled at me for damaging my eternal soul. that’s all.

it’s really not your job, as a child, to tell them. it’s their job, as your parents and caretakers, to notice.

about the physical abuse--like i said, there’s no reason to harm a child. it’s morally abhorrent--harming someone who is at your mercy, who doesn’t really know what they did wrong, who is still learning how to act, who can’t fight back in any way. that’s what they’re doing. even if they come from a background where it’s socially acceptable. they’re adults. it is every adult’s responsibility to think about their actions, and to do the right thing.

hitting their child for exhibiting symptoms of csa is awful and horrifically abusive. touching you when you do not want to be touched is horrifically abusive. knowing or suspecting that you are a victim of csa, and doing nothing about it, is abusive.

i’m so sorry your parents are like this. you deserve so much better.
