#i hate posting about how im insecure abt my drawings because that just makes people rb them out of pity thats annoying as shit dont do that #but then i try for hours to draw something and its honestly not important to me but by the end im pretty pround #so i post it knowing no ones gonna give a shit #and yeah pretty much thats what happens #and i feel like shit bc no one owes me attention ffs #and i know it isnt anything special and i should have drawn something actually interesting instead of another portrait #and i complain to my mother and shes like #'well this is something a child would have drawn it isnt good'#and im like oooh i should kms got it #like obviously im the one who craves validation without putting any effort into making it actually cool #so this is like no one's fault and im self aware of it and it drives me INSANE #and i need to vent this but it will make someone go pity rb all of my stuff and it's gonna feel like shit bc i hate begging for notes #like you know if someone wasnt going to reblog why beg them to. thats not them actually liking the art thats bullshit guilt tripping #i dont even need exposure i dont sell any drawings exposure is useless to me i dont even know what i want #i just want to make something that people like what the fuck

Your blog is the only blog where I feel safe enough asking this question. What do you think of Percy Jackson fans who feel as though they and the series have a moral superiority to Harty Potter ? Obviously, Harry Potter and its author are laden with questionable and sometimes straight-up hateful takes and views. But the way PJO fans constantly compare the two, its authors (even though RR is far from flawless), and the two MCs (ignoring how the two both share similarities in the fact that they are both traumatised, abused, angry teenage boys). I'm sorry that this ask got so long, but this has been annoying me for a while now.

This is an interesting question - for one, fandom fights over superiority is a concept that has been around for ages and has never been constructive. PJO and HP fandoms have been fighting in that exact way (and it has gone both ways!) for literal decades (remember, PJO turns 20 this year) so this isn't new, it's just taken on a moral flavor. Let's go over some things though (but please keep in mind i never got into HP and never read the books or fully watched the movies so my knowledge of HP is primarily pop culture absorption/secondhand from my family and friends):

Are either series perfect? No. HP absolutely is full of hateful sentiments and JKR is a hateful person and I do not respect her for that. Disney's marketing recently has absolutely fully leaned into trying to put Rick above her as a moral paragon and emphasizing how progressive he is and his support of diversity in middle grade series, despite some failings to reflect that in the actual text. Are Rick and JKR equally bad? Definitely not. Rick has had tangible good influence on adhd/dyslexia awareness that very directly impacted people like me as a neurodivergent kid going through school in the 2000s. JKR meanwhile has directly negatively impacted trans laws internationally very recently.

Rick absolutely isn't perfect, but he's vocally supportive, has made a lot of effort in the past to be inclusive, and still attempts to do so. Most of his issues simply stem from his own unaddressed internalized bigotry/biases and his research on varying topics not being great (plus poor management decisions such as not hiring a sensitivity reader actually fit for the story he's trying to tell). But he's not hateful. JKR is. JKR is very vocally hateful and bigoted and this is absolutely reflected in her work as well even in earlier HP. They are comparable in that they are both middle grade authors of easily two of the most popular middle grade fantasy (or specifically hidden world fantasy) series out right now. They are not equivalent in the slightest in their bigotry or tangible damage.

In terms of Percy versus Harry, I personally don't think they're very comparable. They share some similarities, but mostly just in that they're both the protagonists of their stories and thus serve protagonist purposes. Beyond that their use within the narrative is pretty different functionally. Their worlds' magic systems are not comparable. The hidden world aspect in both their universes isn't even comparable, since in PJO the "hidden world" aspect is very different from most hidden world fantasy formats because the entire point is that it's functionally not a hidden world. The characters themselves are very different as well - Percy's personality and the way he behaves and reacts to his environment is absolutely nothing like Harry's.

Most of the anti-HP-in-general sentiments stem from wanting to cut off JKR's notoriety, which I think is valid to want to do. And I do think there are a lot of issues with continuing to support JKR's work especially in ways that functionally promote her work or support her financially. Obviously, we will never be able to scrub HP from the cultural zeitgeist. It's just not feasible and I'm very anti-book burning so I do think it's important to acknowledge the role HP has had in pop-culture alongside acknowledging its harmful materials. HP is a text you absolutely can't death-of-the-author your way out of because a lot of the vitriol is baked into the text and worldbuilding in very overt ways - and there are plenty of other pop-culture staple novels like this. But fandom in general, at least true fandom and not mainstream fandom, is so obscure most of the time that I don't think, so long as people are not ignoring negative themes of the source material and are being thoughtful as they navigate engaging with it, that it is an inherently bad thing for HP fandom to just exist at all. It's never going to just stop existing no matter what people do. And HP fandom are not the only ones who should be thoughtful about how they engage with their source material - PJO fandom is not exempt from examining some of the problematic aspects in our own text and figuring out how to be respectful with those topics. It's just a lot easier for PJO fandom to tune it out without it being noticed because there's less of it and it's (at least sometimes) less overt. Honestly if HP fandom decided to go more down the path of a fandom like Warriors or Miraculous Ladybug, where the average sentiment is more along the lines of "Oh god no don't read/watch the source material it sucks/we stopped paying attention to it year ago and it's not relevant at all to what we're up to. We're over here functionally rewriting everything from the ground up/doing our own thing" I would very much support them in that endeavor. I do think there is merit in limiting promotion of the HP source material as much as possible, though.

Hopefully that all makes at least some amount of sense.

My reaction can be summarised as this (yet again):

I don't have many thoughts because uh. That was depressing as hell and I need to stare at a wall.

But I DO gotta say that the subplot with the dead "wife" was so telenovela-esque that for a good minute it was more funny than depressing. Then it got depressing. But it was so jarring and so far out of the left field that for a good second my friend and I had to pause the audiobook and laugh because ????????? Unhinged to just appear, go "I am Eslin, I have a G U N. My secret wife was killed. By my boss. Now I yearn for sweet sweet revenge." and not elaborate. Like. Damn dude ok. Sorry about our wife also. Fucking killed me that he continued like "So anyway I reacted adequately by killing all of my boss' friends. Starvation style." Like ???? Jjhsgdjsdfghsjdfh what????? I mean damn I do respect the grind set but also that's such an absurd escalation out of context. Did your boss kill your wife? Kill all of his friends! And in context the most absurd part is probably the notion that Visser 3 has friends??????? Like??? Wait no Eslin. Eslin wait. I love your John Wick-esque "fridged wife" trope swag but you need to slow down. I need details. I need you to tell me HOW your boss even has friends.

In my heart I do not believe we will see that madman ever again but on god I do wish for an insane telenovela-esque sequence of him just showing up at the most random moment to do exactly one thing and that's to pull a gun on Visser 3. For no reason, I just think it would be kinda funny. Like,,,did your boss kill your wife?:

Kill all of his friends

Acquire a G U N

Attempt to make the local Andalite youth assassinate your boss for you

Pull the gun on your boss

???????

Profit (probably die)

Aside from that, I also need to say that the moment when Ax called Tobias his close friend at the end was so sweet. Also ngl kinda...concerning/harrowing how much Tobias really doesn't give a shit about not being a human. Like it doesn't seem so concerning from other points of view but the way Ax gets increasingly weirded out by Tobias not asking him about the nothlit (idk if I'm spelling that right rn) really reminds you that it IS kinda worrying. Like I get it, I mean...Tobias has no family that cares about him, he has no friends outside of the Animorphs friend group, why would he care? But it's still kinda...yeah.

Also unimaginably surprised by the amount of collective guilt present in the Andalite society. You'd think they're Catholic or something the way they keep beating themselves up and force everyone to also beat themselves up and their system itself is saturated with the guilt and shame and they teach it to kids at school from an early age. Like. Jesus Christ calm down. Stop that. As the Animorphs said at the end of the book - the Andalites made an oopsie once. It sucked, yes, it continues to have consequences that suck, yes, but it happens. Sometimes you think you're doing something kind and it turns into a disaster. That does not mean you should beat yourself up for it or, god forbid, tell other people that they should not be kind lest they make a mistake. Damn I guess we should all be cold assholes forever, huh? I'm sure that can't have any negative consequences.

Andalite society in general seems kinda unhinged. Like...do I get why it is like that? Yeah. But do I find it unhinged? Also yeah. Like ok duty and the collective being the most important things is totally sensible for a prey animal. Safety of the herd and all that. But it's still kinda unhinged that they do make everyone have duty as their number 1 priority and that they have rituals devoted to it. Not all rituals are spiritual or religious in nature, but the morning ritual is kinda...borderline religious in a way. More spiritual than religious, I suppose, but yeah.

Also I love Ax so much. 10/10 character. He has it all: an incredibly hilarious desire for cinnamon buns, the inability to act like a human being (same dude), spitting random facts at completely random times, a thirst for blood only a 13(?) years old could have, a dysfunctional obsession with duty and doing what is right that only a 13(?) years old could have (also lol yeah dude I was like that when I was 13 too. dw you'll grow out of it), he can even code. And he might even be bi (I'm joking but I' referring to the fact that he was like "Yeah so when I morph into a human form I suddenly agree that Rachel is beautiful and that Marco is cute.").

#animorphs #animorphs book club #honestly though i was starting to wonder WHEN some Yeerks would go 'fuck it i dont hate to put up with that idiots shit. i vote for mutiny.#because like...Visser 3 is...well id describe him as the empires weakest soldier. like he seems to have SOME brain cells rattling around bu #he doesnt seem to use them correctly?? like ok he is pretty paranoid and that itself is annoying. he is obsessed with Andalites enough to b #mockingly called 'half-Andalite fool' by some of his subordinates. he lacks charisma and cannot for the life of him even look like a leader #of any sort. he is deeply unpleasant to be around and nobody enjoys his company. he is half-decent at planning but only half-decent #and what he manages to plan he tends to ruin by every other aspect of himself (either he antagonises his subordinates so much that they don #tell him information or he makes an impulsive decision etc etc)#he is nearly fully incompetent and his only advantage is that everyone is afraid of him. but the problem is that theyre afraid for a #good reason and that is BAD because that means that one day theyll become too pissed to be afraid. like. ok. he has a famine on his hands.#he makes the brutal and cruel but strategically sound decision to reduce the numbers of the soldiers. he immediately fucks up big time #by killing them more or less at random instead of being strategic about it. a strategic plan would be to kill someone and find out who #all of their colleagues are and kill those too. if you dont kill a subordinates colleague because they happen to have a more important #position; of course that person will be pissed off and probably organise a group with OTHER similar people and that group WILL #attempt to murder you (probably brutally) or die trying. so basically he antagonises literally everyone around him by being personally #unpleasant; volatile; conceited and impulsively aggressive AND incapable of as much as hearing feedback or willing to change his mind #and the last point also antagonises people on a formal level. and he also kills their friends. at random. and threatens everyone constantly #hes like a if a chihuahua had a huge scorpion tail and it was absolutely deadset on asserting itself by simply slashing everything and #everyone with that tail. like genuinely he has no charisma he doesnt even pretend to care about anything that doesnt interest him he is #inflexible he cant adapt his plans half of the time because he wants them to be THAT way and not THAT way also why is he like my mother?#like the longer im typing this for the more i feel like im just talking about my mother. damn. thats depressing.#anyway. my point was yeah i would have been surprised if nobody wanted his head on a plate. i think all the Yeerks who are sick of his shit #should unionise. i just think itd be funny. like several of them are just like 'Man i dont give a shit about this war or whatever i just #want to be allowed to have emotions and to love my coworker over here and also my boss is a nightmare i hope he gets colic and dies'#like ok guys i have a solution. Kinda gets me when people age them down in AUs and stuff because to me those characters wouldn't be half as interesting if Chilchuck, Senshi and Mithrun were the tallman equivalent of in their twenties

#just something about having a lot of history you know #like. chills is divorced or thereabouts. senshi spent like 30 years living in dungeon wilderness. mithrun knows kabru's mom #none of this would be possible if they were 20-somethings #dungeon meshi spoilers #dungeon meshi manga spoilers #somewhat i guess #like. yeah kabru and laios and falin (and marci for an elf) are really young BUT have a lot of life exp #but like. the fact that so much happened to them while they are so young is TRAUMA. its BAD #meanwhile chilchuck had like. a pretty average life for a halffoot his age. maybe even successful from a professional standpoint #senshi didnt have an average life but had the time to accumulate an amount of knowledge no 20something could have #and of course mithruns whole life story is like. slowed down because hes an elf #but even then i think its really important to show that it might take several years to start recuperating from a traumatic event #like its what makes his character such an interesting commentary on disability and depression #when you're 25 bouncing back is easier. when you're 40? 50? showing that theres hope #even when you've lost your whole youth to your pain... thats a whole other thing #sorry i started writing serious commentary in the tags #chills #captain mithrun #senshi #even in senshis character up to a point. he spent more years out of society than in it #and YET! even he manages to find a place. somewhat #like. they are all here to show that life goes on even after horrible or simply sad shit happens to you #they are survivors!!!! thats important
