how to grub your karkat

or you can use this for any other plush or if you wanna make a whole new plush entirely or whatever

disclaimer im not a professional in any sense of the word and theres anything technical im doing wrong or you think you can do it better by all means dont hold back

Things you’ll need

sewing machine unless youre really dedicated but doing it by hand is gonna be an agonizing feat i promise. I just used a straight stitch for everything

Fabrics: for the main body i suggest a minky or something soft, for the inner lining something in the same color as the main body and ideally with some stretch, and anything black for the legs. Less than a yard of each will do

if youre using minky or anything furry get a lint roller. Trust me

stuffing, i used polyfil

threads that match your fabrics

good fabric scissors

sewing needle for hand sewing/fixes

karkat plush (optional)

Heres the pattern i came up with! They are numbered for your convenience and pieces with the same numbers are going to be part of the same row of segments. cut everything out on the black lines (Make sure when you’re printing to fit the image to the page size.) on the left we have the belly pieces, the right is the main body, and we have the foot in between

Im using a relatively thin minky fabric, im sure you can use whatever but something with some fluffiness kinda helps to mask any imperfections in the sewing. When drawing out your patterns keep in mind what direction your fibers settle in and try to keep it consistent

On the wrong side of the fabric measure out at least a half inch seam allowance around each piece of the pattern, i used a centimeter and that worked but had me sweatin a bit.

For the main body pieces fold your fabric in half before you cut so you can have 2 of each segment that are mirrored to each other, i also extended all of the #1 pieces an additional centimeter/half inch at the top so we can fold them over at the very end. I highly suggest numbering the insides of all the cut pieces, especially in a way where you will remember what direction they are each meant to sit

After you’ve numbered all your pieces, set them aside and start making your feet!

Each of the 6 legs is made of two pieces, but i because i only had a swatch of the black minky i made up for the rest with some random black scrap fabric from an old project. Try to keep your fabric consistent if you can lol

I didnt give these pieces any more seam allowance on the fabric but i recommend adding a centimeter or half inch to the base of it to extend the length and have some more wiggle room

Instead of cutting out 12 individual pieces and struggling to stitch them all together i started with 6, then pinning each piece real tight with the right/furry side down onto my secondary fabric, and slowly stitching around the shape real close to the edges- DO NOT CLOSE THE FLAT SIDE as we are going to stuff the feet through here

Now cut the shape out of the fabric and repeat till you have 6 feet

Now flip those bad boys inside out, stuff up, and if you wanna you can match them to their best pairs

now grab a pair of feeties and your #1 pieces and line them up, in this picture my belly #1 piece is shorter bc i forgot to add the extra centimeter and i recut that once i realized. Line those sides up with the right/furry parts touching and with the feet in between, flip it around to make sure everything's sitting the way you want it

Note. i didnt realize until later but i sewed my feet in upside down. save yourself the time it takes to fix it and dont make the same mistake

Straight stitch these layers together and repeat with the next two segments our good friends #2 & #3

Repeat this for the #2 and #3 sections but NOT THE #4, that part doesnt need feet! just line those edges up right/furry sides together and sew

the secret to the squish of the suit is making this inner lining from another fabric and stuffing it! I used what i had leftover from a stretchy red fabric for a kanaya skirt. For this we need to make a new pattern for each section, making sure it follows the curve of the round edge but the piece itself is shorter, almost like youre removing the seam allowance you added. Mine is a centimeter shorter on the top and on the bottom and reaches to the middle

Make one of these for each numbered segment,you only need to make half the pattern and you can fold your fabric in half on a crease and you end up with one symmetrical piece (bars)

Now you need to pin these pieces right on top of the wrong side of your numbered furry sections and line up the straight edges like so (disclaimer for LOTS OF SCARY NEEDLES !!)

Admittedly i didnt estimate how long these pieces needed to be very accurately and overshot it a bit, if you start pinning it from the middle and continue outwards on either side thatll ensure its not too lose and you can cut off any excess after

The only exception is piece #1, if you recall we gave this #1 section extra seam allowance. This is so we can sew down that excess at the neck later and hide any of the inside that might show once its all put together. Do not connect the top edge to the inner lining! Since i added an extra centimeter earlier im gonna leave that hanging and pin + sew down the inner lining a centimeter lower than the top edge. LEAVE THE CURVED EDGES OPEN! DONT SEW THEM TOGETHER! those stay open to stuff

Straight stitch the lined up edges together

Now you have all these skinned pieces of little freak and we need to connect all these segments together making sure to sew UNDER the existing stitches so we dont see those on the outside when its all put together

Inside looks like a bit of a mess but thats fine bc its not the part that matters

Now stuff it! you might need a stick or pencil or something long and thin to get stuffing into the middle bits

Now thats its stuffed you can finally close those curved edges. Try not to sew over a thick mound of stuffing, push it in a little further to give yourself some space and you can fluff it back out after everythings closed. I cut off that excess lining fabric after sewing

Ough… they filleted my boy…

Finally, match up all the edges and lines and HAND SEW them right sides together. You will destroy your machine trying to work around that stuffing i promise. You also have an excuse to get up from your work desk and sew on a couch or smth. I used a standard backstitch for a tight finish and again, make sure you sew under any existing stitches so they arent visible on the outside!

Speaking of the outside, once you stitch everything together you can very gently flip this sucker inside out

This is @hatamonu’s cat Cocaina, aka Coco. Her perfectly square figure made it into my grub files somehow so shes essential to the tutorial

Check the fit and all thats left to do is roughly baste stitch down that excess neck fabric onto the stuffed lining and youre set! I gave the thread slight tugs as i went to tighten the opening a bit put dont tighten it too much

It fits pretty snug but starts to slip a bit with motion. Heres a bounce test

 If you do shake your baby make sure to safety pin the plush to the suit so he doesnt prematurely shed his exosekeleton

Now spread that baby fever and show your baby to the world

i was never as optimistic about the ending of bnha as some villain stans were, but i never thought it'd end so badly it left me wondering why horikoshi ever bothered to humanize the villains or make them complex characters at all.

like-- i expected that at least 1-2 of the 3 villains who were heavily foreshadowed and outlined by the narrative as people to be saved would be, you know, actually saved. i didn't think that was a high bar. i've been let down before in fandoms where everyone was certain a character would live and then they didn't, so i tried to keep my hopes low. AND YET.

what happened to tomura was upsetting, but i wasn't that shocked after how disinterested the manga has seemed to be in him for like, the past 100 or so chapters. a bit surprised, because you'd think if anyone would succeed in the 'saving' mission it would be the MC, but whatever. dabi, well, they've spent a lot of time showing the way his quirk destroys his body even before this arc, so that also sucked but at least it didn't feel completely out of left field.

........but they're not even letting toga live???

i just-- what have we even been doing here? when zero out of the 3 characters that were marked out for saving were actually saved, you have to acknowledge that something has gone seriously fucking wrong with the storytelling. not even just from the perspective of a villain fan but from the perspective of someone who likes stories to be thematically consistent or satisfying in any way.

you can set up an expectation of these characters being saved and then subvert that and turn it into a tragedy- if done well that could even be worthwhile and interesting. but you can't turn it into a tragedy and then just... keep trucking along with the happy ending messaging and act like anything in the manga has been resolved and that the characters have somehow successfully completed their heroic origin stories.

like, maybe i shouldn't have expected this much from a shounen- at the end of the day it is still a shounen so i didn't expect to feel that it truly satisfactorily wrapped up all the themes it brought up around societal ills. but i expected it to at least resolve those things in a shounen-y way where they punch the problems and help these specific people and then you can feel good assuming that the state of things will continue to improve in the post-canon world of the manga.

instead we got... uh, none of that. the story refused to answer a single one of the larger questions it's been outlining for the past 400+ chapters. in the end, it was all flash and no substance, which again could've been fine, if it weren't for the way the story seemed to spend significant chunks of time trying to delude you into thinking it had substance.

truly makes me wonder what horikoshi thought he was doing the entire time. can it really all be blamed on burnout? the most that can be said for this ending is that it is, well, an ending. fuck dude, it is that.

and that's just... such a sad way to end a project that took up 10 years of your life.

I have so many questions about Cait Sith. He tells the gang that he's a regular 9 to 5 paper pusher and they just. Accept that. Granted this is a universe where Chadley exists so the idea of Shinra hiring a robot is not exactly unusual but also. This is a three foot tall cartoon cat. He can't have been built explicitly for the sake of being a spy because Cissnei recognizes him, implying Cait Sith is just like??? A known thing? He's got seniority at the golden saucer second only to Dio, so he presumably has been working there for at least several months. Did Reeve just build his little fursona cat son and set him up with a nice job and everyone in the company knows about this?

Also the fact that he's a robot and literally everyone in the party knows this and at one point we straight up accuse him of being a listening device and his only argument is "I am way too cute and tiny to be a spy. Look at me. I'm just a little guy."

And everyone is like "Shit. He got us there."

Is this Considered Henry Stickmin Collection Anniversary Art? The original art work took me 8 hours and this time around this took me 12 hours! I blame the extra add characters haha! This was a lot of fun to see the changes between the characters designs and interpretations I had then and now! sometimes i wonder how the roman camp takes in new campers, since Percy’s entrance seemed less-than-average, judging by reactions. And CJC doesn’t really answer it either cause we don’t see the in-between of Claudia training and joining the legion. We don’t see it with Mimi either, and with Mimi we can’t really confirm if the reason she was seemingly alone was because Lupa doesn’t usually bring them to the entrance of camp, if she had left already, or if Mimi’s stench powers made Lupa avoid her.

Like, does Lupa normally just walk in whatever group she just finished training (since we know the pack will come pick up new campers sometimes)? Do they have to awkwardly walk in on their own and explain they’re coming over from the Wolf House? Does CJ keep track of who is currently at the Wolf House so they know to let them in when they’re done training? Is there any kind of documentation about their training and how it went or is it just “source: dude trust me” (which is implied how Hazel’s went)? how does this work.

Knowing from the Bocular Man's first appearance that he has limited, recorded phrase library, I am sitting here WAITING for the day he says something off-script. Whether it's spliced together from other recorded responses or generated completely fresh, still using Merlin's own voice or constructing his own, I HUNGER for the moment the Bocular Man says something and everyone is like "hm okay cool" and Merlin is (quietly or unquietly) going absolutely bananas because wait, I didn't give him that one.

I am genuinely really enjoying seeing people who have clearly never read the Odyssey before reacting to EPIC's Ithaca saga. I haven't listened to EPIC myself (yet) but people keep saying stuff like "Odyseeus built their palace around an olive tree he carved into his and Penelope's marriage bed that's so symbolic" and "He really just murdered all the suitors wouldn't that piss off their parents?" Which are observations and questions that the Odyssey makes incredibly blatantly clear as to the symbolism or the answer because it's a really old poem and subtlety wasn't really Homer's strong suit.

There's something really endearing about seeing people interact with the Odyssey through the same way the Ancient Greeks did - a bard singing the story of Odyseus' nostos.

(I gather the details have changed a little, but that's what happens with oral storytelling, and that's how the Odyssey got created in the first place)

Also as congratulations have my favourite ancient depiction of Odysseus surfing with two amphemorae having stolen Poseidon's trident, being sped along by Boreas, stark naked except for a cloak he's holding onto.

Will you tell us about the Mostly Crack!Fic?

I will indeed!! Thank you for asking!!

First things first, the majority of the crack aspect is that it would be Dick Grayson/Jimmy Olsen.

The premise would be that Jimmy, age 17/18, has an internship at the Planet in the summer before his first year of college and he’s managed to spend it so far driving Perry White insane enough that he’s about to like. Get absolutely fired without cause.

But!

He volunteers to go to Gotham and get photographic proof of Batman (and Robin) existing during their extreme cryptid era.

Clark is able to give Bruce a heads up that Jimmy’s coming and to Dick’s intense annoyance, he is ordered by Batman to go babysit this junior photojournalist as Richie Grayson, similarly aged socialite, so that Jimmy can’t blow the whistle on their whole operation.

Anyway, one thing leads to another, Dick just won’t leave Jimmy alone, Jimmy is completely frustrated by it (taste of his own medicine [Jimmy ilu this isn’t barbed criticism]) until he finally snaps and is like “dude its really flattering but I don’t swing that way.”

Dick, who noticed just that exact second that a) he totally has been flirting with Jimmy this entire time whoops and b) oh actually he might be bi huh who knew, is just, “okay bet.”

Anyway, they have a whole summer fling and Jimmy never gets his photographs of Batman or Robin, but he also stays in Perry’s good graces (helped along by an encouraging endorsement from Clark; a deeply commiserating endorsement from Lois who has experienced this exact runaround but from Brucie). Dick goes back to Teen Titans HQ and discovers pretty immediately that the reason he doesn’t like Roy and Donna making out in the common spaces isn’t because he’s got weird over protective brother instincts towards Donna (just normal brother instincts), but rather because he wants to be the wonder twin banging Roy.

There’d probably be a years later snap shot of Jimmy seeing someone else get the proof of Batman and a different Robin, but I think they’d both hold fond memories of their time together.
