I think I've been settling into a pattern of worship. It's comforting, but also a bit nerve-wracking. Part of me wants to "not get complacent" or whatever, and keep pushing to do more and more, and the other is just glad I've been able to do something that doesn't burn me out or cause a meltdown after a couple weeks. For the past several weeks (months?) the most I've managed, the majority of the time, is a weekly offering to Apollo: mostly burning his candle for a couple hours, sometimes paired with a divination session if I feel up to it and have something to ask. I've also gotten into the habit of offering something to Hermes (again, usually burning his candle) when I get back from somewhere if I've been out to an appointment/running errands/etc., once I feel up to doing so. Most of the time I do it the same day, but sometimes it's the day after (last Saturday, for example: a UV index of 8 does not productive post-travel plans make). I try to remember to do consistent offerings to other Theoi as well, to little avail, except for Hestia who, of course, gets a portion of candle smoke & food offerings, and who I will sometimes dedicate time spent organizing/room-cleaning to. I'm getting comfortable with the fact that it's because I can't handle much at the moment, mentally, despite being in better health than I was this past winter.

I've also given up on trying to follow a lunar holiday/festival/etc calendar, at least at the moment. Again, keeping up with it takes energy I don't have, and it can contribute to a shame cycle if I end up not being able to do as much as I - in one of my more energetic moments - had planned. Instead, I'm slowly adding versions of holy days and festivals into the calendar system I'm familiar with. Right now it's only one (my Noumenia, and the day I dust all the altars, is the first Friday of the month), but as I get more comfortable with it I'll try to add others that, are, generally, centered around either personal associations, events, etc. and/or the same themes of the lunar month that overlaps most closely.

The nature of the Theoi is still something I'm wrapping my head around; I'm trying to be okay with the whole "not knowing" thing, and will likely struggle with that for a while. While I'm still scrupulous about things like cleanliness, and thought checking, and "appropriateness", and and and... I think that accidentally falling into a much more relaxed form of worship has helped me get through the stage where I was Constantly Pushing To Do More. And while I know I'll probably cycle back around to that when my brain next decides to Ruminate (tm) on it, it's...nice, you know? To actually not feel guilty about how I may be doing things "wrong", or anxious about how the way I do things may come off to others who don't have the same mental & physical health factors as I do.

and then i remembered that "the princess and the frog" exists as a disney movie and it was great. i really liked "friends on the other side" so i listen to that and i'm like. facilier is zak but as shadi enigmar and he's inviting phoenix and kristoph in to tell their fortunes, with phoenix being naveen and kristoph, lawerence. "won't you shake a poor sinner's hand, boys?" the way zak screwed up both their lives really resonates with faciliers energy here!! and the cards!! they could be like poker/tarot cards!!!! fuck!!!!!! and the friends on the other side are magnifi, valant and thalassa!

Okay so I might’ve mentioned that I’m writing a fic where the children of Percabeth, Solangelo, and Valgrace go on an epic quest to rescue their parents and the rest of the Seven from the clutches of evil and I’ve kinda been Hyperfixating on it for a while so here is the first character I would like to info-dump about.

Meet Finley Di Angelo-Solace!!!

He’s currently my favourite out of the Next-gen trio and definitely the one I have the most fun writing for. I genuinely love him sm.

Rant under the cut-

Fin is the son of Nico and Will, and was created using divine godly magic so is biologically both theirs (hey if Zeus can have a baby from his thigh this can happen)

His powers are a complex amalgamation of both of his parents: he can shadow-travel in sunlight, he can heal and talk to the dead and his main weapon is archery

He’s autistic

He has hypersensitive hearing (it could be an Apollo thing, it could be an Autism thing we don’t know. It’s probably both)

He prefers ranged combat partially because he is touch-averse and likes to keep his distance (also bc the other two characters both use melee weapons so I needed some variety)

I see your “Trans Will Solace” hc and I raise you- “Transmasc son of Solangelo who they love and support so so much”

He will INSIST on wearing a binder throughout the entire quest, rib cage be damned! (This will become a problem bc apparently you’re supposed to take breaks and you’re not supposed to do any physical exercise in them so running around chasing monsters is not gonna go well)

A big theme in the fic is gonna be “names have power- but the name you choose is so much more important than the name you were given”, a continuation of the theme from my Married Valgrace AU (which this is canon to) where Jason chooses to take Leo’s name instead of keeping the name of the mom that abandoned him. I feel like Finley would be a great character to symbolise this- someone who chose his own name.

His favourite colour is green/turquoise

Think of Nico’s scariest moment that you’ve read in canon or in a fic- where he is just a force of complete and utter darkness and death. Are you picturing it? Good. Now multiply that by ten. Now imagine someone tried to misgender his child.

The same can be applied to Will. No transphobe would dare mess with Solangelo’s boy.

He is childhood best friends with the two other main characters, Isabella and Olympia, and talks to them a lot but is kinda shy around everyone else.

He also has a major crush on Isabella- the daughter of Valgrace. I have so many cute hcs about those two y’all have no idea.

He is good with medicine and has a magic first-aid kit that acts a lot like Leo’s tool belt with replenishing supplies.

He loves Star Wars

While all the other characters’ POV chapters have regular PJO-style funny titles, all his chapter titles are TOA-esque haikus.

The rawest, most metal 'Apollo as a father' story is the one where he dooms a whole town to a child-killing plague after sheepdogs tear apart his son because his lover, Psamathe, had an abusive father, Krotopus, who would've never let her keep the child.

In a bid to keep the child safe, Psamathe exposes the babe (that is, leaves him outside in the wild without any protection; think Atalanta) and shepherds take him in and raise him as their own until his untimely Actaeon-esque death. Psamathe, hearing that her son died in such a gruesome manner, is near inconsolable and her grief cues her father onto the fact that Linus (the boy's name) was Psamathe's child all along whereupon her father sentences her to death for harlotry and lying about Apollo.

Apollo, evidently, was not very fond of that.

The alternative version of this story is even more metal because it's Krotopus' own dogs who find and tear apart Linus as an infant leading to Apollo immediately sending Poine to personally take babies from their mothers and kill them until the people made amends. Argonian Coroebus rose up and slew Poine to free the people of her curse but Apollo simply retaliated by personally plaguing Argo then and refusing to lift the curse until Linus was properly buried and his spirit was soothed.

In both versions, the dead is eventually quelled but in the version where Krotopus kills Psamathe, the plague rages on until the king himself gets an oracle where he's ordered to leave Argo forever and found a new city to live out the rest of his days. Coroebus, in his version, had to travel to Delphi to find out what his punishment would be for slaying Poine.

Things I would like to see in the Eternal Sugar update (Greek mythology edition)

Just gonna go ahead and write these down ahead of time to see if any of this actually comes true. Note right away that I expect a lot of Greek mythology references lol

Minotaur mini boss somewhere on the map (or as the beast raid boss idk)

Beast Raid boss looks like Medusa/a hydra/the Nemean Lion/a cyclops/the minotaur

Regular level enemies that look like creatures from Greek myth. Like any of the ones listed above and/or others (like... sugar griffins or sugar harpies or sugar satyrs. And so on and so forth)

Something something Holly being implicitly compared to Atlas carrying the weight of the world on his (her) shoulders

Holly and co. (mostly her) going through things that mimic the 12 trials of Heracles (HIS NAME IS NOT HERCULES! IT'S HERACLES! HERCULES IS HIS ROMAN NAME! THE MYTH GOES OUT OF ITS WAY TO EXPLAIN THAT ZEUS PUT "Hera" IN HIS NAME IN A FEEBLE ATTEMPT TO APPEASE HERA BECAUSE THE KID WAS AN AFFAIR BABY (one of ten hundred thousand bc Zeus is a shameless whore)! Disgruntled Greek Mythology Fan Rant™️ over)

Eternal Sugar's lair either looking like the Garden of the Hesperides or straight up like Mount Olympus (or even Elysium ig. It's called the Forgotten Sugar Paradise, after all)

Some sort of food is found that Holly's gang is tempted or tricked into eating that puts them to sleep, drives them temporarily insane, or otherwise incapacitates them, referencing the Lotus Eaters from Homer's Odyssey (this would probably happen to Pitaya tbh)

Eternal Sugar gives Hollyberry a pomegranate to eat during their "in the end, you will become me" scene, insisting that Holly have something decent to eat and then rest because she deserves it after pushing herself so hard for so long. Since this is supposed to be the "Ancient's moment of weakness" part, Holly ends up eating it and either falling asleep or being put under some sort of mind control; submitting to Eternal Sugar's will either way. All of this as an allusion to the myth of Persephone and Hades, where the latter tricks the former into eating a few pomegranate seeds thus chaining her to the Underworld forever, as is what happens upon eating any Underworld food (seed count differs with retellings but it's usually 6 months, autumn and winter, where Demeter makes all plant life wither as she mourns her daughter's absence. The myth is supposed to explain where the cycle of seasons came from)

Eternal Sugar should be an Aphrodite-esque figure with siren powers or something

The "ally of the Ancient" cookie that shows up in ep 10 is an oracle-type figure that predicts the eventual outcome of the adventure (Holly awakens and defeats Sugar). Bonus points if the oracle speaks this prophecy to Eternal Sugar or any of her minions and is punished for it (common motif in Greek myth is oracles and other fortuneteller types being rebuffed or even outright persecuted because their prophecies upset people. "The harder you try to challenge or prevent destiny, the sooner it will arrive" is a common lesson. Every single time somebody tries to subvert a prophecy, they only ensure that it happens. Like trying to bust up a coffin with a hammer, except every hit lands on a nail and drives it further in)

Bonus to above, it would be funny if this character was specifically like Cassandra (priestess of Apollo cursed to receive visions of the future (specifically disaster) that no one would ever believe no matter how hard she tried to convince them) and an ally of Sugar's that was only trying to help her master, only to be punished for it. And then she eventually sides with Hollyberry, because Holly is a kind person who would probably try to help or comfort her in some way despite being an enemy (Holly would always rather have friends than enemies. She even made a friend out of Pitaya), and helps her win. "Cassandra siding with the one person who ever actually listened to her" sort of deal ykwim

Desperately need Hollyberry's awakened form to be a nod to Demeter like in this post made by this awesome artist (I originally thought of Holly's awakened form looking more "royal" and having a huge assortment of berries all over, as a nod to her uniting the warring houses in her land (which is what earned her her Soul Jam in the first place. Remember that every Ancient's awakening has nodded at what they did to earn the Soul Jam in the first place) and her always preaching friendship and unity. Her taking after Demeter is that but 100x better because of the nod to Greek myth + as the artist says (which I agree with 100%), Demeter is a harvest/agriculture goddess and agriculture (which Holly's kingdom is actually known for, a la the berry fields) takes a lot of hard work and diligence, aka the opposite of sloth, which is perfect for Holly)

the protestant reformation being real in solangelo's relationship makes me Think so much, mostly about silly little disagreements it would cause (beef over the eucharist, weirdly strong opinions about different books in the Bible, Nico going to bat for Mary) but also about how those backgrounds would impact their thought process when they're introduced to camp and the Gods.

I honestly cannot remember for the life of me if its canon that Will has a bookshelf with mythology texts or if its just a long held fanon belief but regardless I do think his approach would be text based. Will knows the Bible and how to read it (remembers his grandma's worn copy covered in pink highlighter and sticky notes, knows the passages his youth pastor pointed him to when he admitted to having a crush on a boy, can recite the exact verses that taught him shame) and his first reaction is to get his hands on Homer and Hesiod and Ovid and pull out his own pink highlighter to draw his own conclusions. Being a son of Apollo but also brought up to read and interpret religious text, that sort of poetry would just click in his brain. It would seem very natural to him for each camper to have a personal relationship with their godly parent, which would of course make it sting even more when it turns out Apollo doesn't really touch base all that often and he was actually lucky to even be claimed in the first place.

Nico, on the other hand, would probably not even consider that meeting a God was remotely possible even if they were real if he wasn't introduced to three of them within his first 24 hours as a demigod. It makes perfect sense that he would align himself with the minor Gods because what is a Catholic Saint if not functionally a minor God and therefore the logical first point of contact in Nico's mind. And on that note of course he's obsessed with mythomagic!! That shit is like Catholic prayer cards with stats!! He probably doesn't know much about the Bible itself, but coming from a very old and established religious culture, he knows all about art and ritual. Will probably grew up with some Kinkade-esque illustrations hung around a prayer hall, but Nico's memories of mass consist of zoning out and looking at mosaics and paintings, and then when he had those memorized moving on to architectural sculpture and endless gilded decorations. He can't name a Bible verse, but he can remember that St Lawrence is associated with the grill and a winged lion means he's looking at St Mark. When he sees the blue Will's eyes for the first time he thinks not of the sky, but of the blue of Mary's cloak, the blue of purity, virtue, and devotion. He takes to Greek art and architecture before he processes the written mythology, and after appreciating the number of male nudes he's allowed to look at, it also occurs to him that much of it is actually very, very familiar. He thinks the first statue of Apollo he sees is Christ at first before he notices the lyre. Will might be weirded out at first by the little rituals he's introduced to around camp, something buried deep in his brain yelling about demons when he incinerates his leftovers for the first time, but Nico adjusts a little easier. Incense and wine smell like his childhood, and his general creepiness might stem more from his comfort level with death and martyrdom than the underworld.

At some level I also think Nico associates divinity with sacrifice and suffering, leading him down a hero's path and contributing to a bit of self martyrdom, while Will associates it with salvation and teaching. He also feels a sort of personal responsibility for that salvation which could manifest as an evangelizing instinct but mostly urges him to heal as many people as possible.
