Reading the “Artefacts of Ouranos” series and man….it drags. On the 3rd book now, Fate of the Sun King, and with every new pov I die a little inside.

It’s like being on a very long road trip and instead of having cool stops at interesting scenic spots and attractions, your only stops are at buc-ees.

Has a semblance of “yay I’m on vacation!”, but it’s really just a fancy bathroom.

should everything in museums all be returned to their countries of origin?

I think if a nation has a legitimate historical and cultural claim over an artefect then it should be weighed against any competing claims, and decided on the basis of who it historically should have passed to, rather than just who later claimed it through conquest, theft or colonialism. Having taken it from an enemy or from someone's grave is not a legitimate claim. An organisation like UNESCO would be well placed to be the judge on that.

In practical terms, in most cases I think the item will be best claimed by conservation organisations in it's country of origin. People argue that 'well you'd only ever learn about your own culture', but visiting exhibitions have been a thing for decades, some of the most important historical artefacts I've seen have been visiting exhibits, like when the Terracota Army toured museums in the US and Europe.

Right now though, nations can just refuse point-blank regardless of claim, as Britain frequently does. Much of the British Museum's famed collection has been stolen, for example, most of it isn't even on display either. Frankly, I don't think it'd be a bad thing if most of what is in our museums is artefacts from our own country, it would give people a better sense of place and of their own heritage, as opposed to gawping at relics stolen from subjugated peoples.

What's more, I don't think that items of historical or cultural significance should even be allowed to be owned by private individuals or instituions. History belongs to the people and should be readily accessible to them, for free.

Yes, the vertical line above Mercury is meant to make it look like a sword. Joel's previous symbol was a sword & he used a sword to end Grian, so it felt like a no brainer. :D

Questions:

The markings above the Listener symbol are a simplified representation of the Council, as described on Martyn's recent lore stream. The diamond isn't meant to refer to the other council members, but I couldn't decide on a way to make that clear.

Gem's symbol having an eye in it is to represent her sacrificing her eye to open the End Portal in Secret Life. It was a toss up between that & making the sacrifice a seperate symbol, & I decided on this. Hopefully this also answers your Gem-related suggestion, though there's nothing saying I couldn't put a seperate Eye symbol in as well, in future. :)

The superpower names are different colours because having them all purple except Mumbo & Skizz felt boring. I tried to pick colours that fit the powers. They may be altered in future.

The symbol under the centre is the constellation of Orion. Do with that info what you will. :P

Pearl, Scott & Bigb have Creaking symbols to mark them all taking an aspect of Creaking into their skins in Wild Life, to some degree.

Completely forgot to change Etho's soulmate symbol. I'll try to fix that for next time. For now, though, it should be fine. Soulmate symbols for winners are simplified from main symbols, so I can get away with a sword for Joel, this time. :P

The museum I work for (in Australia) also has something similar with the Australian museum, where Indigenous objects have been returned to Country on permanent loan.

I know Australia has also gotten some significant cultural artefects from the British museum on loan for a visit, and while there was frustration about the fact that they had to go back to the UK, it was also a step towards proper repatriation.

There has been a recent surge in repatriation/give everything back posts in Museum Tumblr so I thought I would share a story I found out about recently.

Background; I did some volunteer work for the Canadian Museum Association that included looking pretty in depth at a few exhibitions from 2023. One of them really caught my eye because it goes into an aspect of Originating Cultural Relationships that I don't see reflected in the public sector a lot even though its not that uncommon among my coworkers.

So back in the 1860s the Prince of Wales was gifted a series of baskets from the Michi Saagiig [Mississauga] women. These were a gift and have remained in the Royal Collection Trust ever since.

It is agreed upon by all parties that the Royal Collection is doing a good job caring for the baskets. However, the baskets still represent the women, the ancestors, who made them. They are family. And the living Michi Saagiig missed their grandmothers and aunts.

So the Peterborough Museum and Archives [Peterborough Canada, not the one in the UK] worked out a temporary loan from the Royal Trust Collection to bring the ancestors back 'for a visit' to their ancestral lands of Nogojwanong-Peterborough.

This was facilitated by the Museum, but the partnership was multi way, between Hiawaitha First Nation, Mississauga Nation, Museum, and the Trust.

This exhibition ran from April to November last year and was ALWAYS meant to be a 'visit' - that language is deliberate. The baskets came home for a visit before returning to their new home in the UK.

Now, from a layman's perspective this might seem like a small victory - the baskets, the makakoons, didn't even stay in Hiawatha which is the modern location of the village they were made in. And it was only a few months, but still cool. Still pretty neat.

But from my perspective this is MASSIVE. This means that the ROYAL FAMILY has agreed to send things home - at least on the short term. This will bring about change in British collection law. It won't be quick. But we will see more and more British institutions sending things on visits. And eventually we will see repatriation. It is going to take a very long time, and this is by no means the first rung on the ladder. But

two kinds of egyptian artefect i absolutely love most of all:

1. really really tiny stuff that someone took the time and care to make, and demonstrating a level of skill i can’t even begin to process. mummifying a baby crocodile little more than a hatchling. or carving pieces of lapis or stone that are less than 2cm in length into a scarab and incribing on the reverse. without magnification.

this is 1.8cm long and 1.5cm wide. if you’re viewing this on desktop right now, the images on your screen are showing up about twice the size that this little bitch actually is. that’s wild. look at it. that ring around the inscription on the reverse is basically perfect and is probably like... 1mm? from the edge. the sheer level of skill i cannot.

2. on the complete flip side... inscriptions or painting or writing wherein the person tasked with this one MILLION percent could not fucking draw

Even if they do bicker at times, Loki and Wizard Y/N have their first real argument and since they're both very proud, neither of them wants to apologize first. Either they yell or ignore each other like children. The Avengers try to reason with them.

Thor tells his brother that if he continues like this, Y/N will leave him. Stephen warns his apprentice, Loki is stubborn, you shouldn’t wait for him to take the first step.

But it doesn't work. Or it does ?

Because Loki is afraid that Y/N will hate him, but he's been telling himself since their first meeting that it will happen someday. And Y/N is sad, because if their relationship meant something to Loki, the God would make an effort.

It's late when they bump into in the bookstore. Loki was looking for a book, Y/N is hiding in a corner, eating ice cream and crying in silence.

     "What ?" growled the apprentice of the mystical arts, trying to hide their tears. "What do you want now ?"

     "... If you want to leave me, I would understand."

     "... Uh ?"

     "If you never wanna see me again. I always knew that would happen. I'm not good enough for you. I'm a monster, I always hurt those I love, and I don't deserve you. "

     "... You want me to leave you ?"

     "No. If I could, I would keep you with me forever. But it would be selfish to force you. I want you to be happy, even if it's without me."

     "... You really mean what you're saying ?"

     "Yes." Loki sighed. 

     "You are an idiot then. It is me who is not good enough for you. Even though I am a magician, I am just a little mortal. I’m the one who is afraid that you will get bored one day and will leave. I don't want you to leave. And you are not a monster. Yes you are annoying and mean sometimes, but nobody is perfect. I forbid you to insult yourself like that."

     "... Are we still arguing ?"

     "... I don't even know why we were fighting anymore."

     “I destroyed a very old artefect by wanting to prank Wong and when you said it was a disaster, I replied that this item had no value and I didn't see the problem."

     "Ah yes. Wong liked it very much."

    "Sorry." whispered Loki, sitting next to them like a nervous kid. 

As it was a word he hardly ever said, while meaning it, Y/N accepted this pathetic apology, which Loki refused to repeat to Wong, accepting a punishment, which was not severe, since he had punished himself by arguing with his dear Lizard, risking losing them.
