If you were to describe or define the style of my work, what would you say? It seems common practice to give an -Artists Statement' for things like advertising etc. I can happily describe why I do what I do, what inspires me, what drives me. But when it comes to describing my own work I have a complete mental block. I can just about handle describing techniques, but any further and it just feels cringy. Help please 😂 Xx #mentalblock #artistsstatement #artistsprocess #mystyle #mywork #mycreations #catsanddogs #opposites #standoff #textilesculpture #textilesculptureartist #sculpture #sculptureartist #fiberartist #textileartist #britishmaker #britishfiberart #asktheaudience #helpneeded https://www.instagram.com/p/CQilFkin936/?utm_medium=tumblr

What Is Art?; An exploration between Print, Screens and Social Media
As a digital photography student there has always been challenges and controversy in the art industry regarding the digital photographic medium being ‘real art’ or a real fine art form. With the expansion and progression of the internet, but most significantly social media platforms such as Instagram, the debate keeps getting more convoluted. In this modern era anyone with a phone and an Instagram account can call themselves a ‘photographer’ posting their images and videos instantly to their followers and the viral social internet sphere. My concept relies on creating a conversation between tangible art and art presented on screen and which is more valid but really they are equal. My goal with this install is to just lay it all out. 3 digital collage prints, beside 3 different screens and platforms from which the collages were created with.

Green Mermaid with Blue Bubble - watercolor and dry pastel mixed media painting. Such a descriptive title, so original, much wow (sarcasm). But I’m not here to slap cool titles on things. I’m just here to make pretty things that invite contemplation. Someone was telling me recently that while cool, my bubble mermaids aren’t easy to relate to and if I come up with meaning or characteristics for them to help viewers connect to the world the mermaids are in. The thing is, I’m not here to tell you what the bubbles mean. I know why I put them there. The mermaid is contemplating the bubble, finding her own meaning in it, and she invites you to join her in looking at something in front of you with a more discerning eye... So, all that said, what does the bubble mean to you? Piece available in my Etsy store, link in bio. #artistsstatement #artistsoninstagram #pnwartist #bubble #bluebubble #mermaid #mermaidhair #greenhair #underwaterscene #blue #green #watercolor #watercolorpainting #drypastel #mixedmediaart #mixedmediapainting #contemplate #contemplation #zaydalicious #zaydaliciousdesigns #think #useyourmind #stopandstare https://www.instagram.com/p/CBZMk37hqfN/?igshid=1h8aev49ksrcm

Since I’ve gained several new potential clients and followers recently, I wanted to take the time to post a pic introducing myself in my “art studio.” My work explores the relationship between what is abstract and yet what is recognizable at first glance and also at times focuses on a painterly response to my take on realism. I try to bring a unique perspective to imagery whether it’s emotional in nature or just because the client enjoys it. I look forward to creating an amazing piece with this focus each and every day. 🙌🏽🙏🏽🎨 #anthonyinkco #inkcompanytattoos #tattooartist #artist #artistsoninstagram #artistsstatement #hattiesburgms #mississippi #hattiesburg #mississippiartist #southernartist #differentisbetter (at The Ink Company)

WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR: Will Smith on Charlie Rose (2002) Will was on the show promoting Ali, film a loved and the sparked a life-long obsession with not only Will but Muhammad Ali. I saw this interview then, when the film was being released... but I'm only just now realizing I'd internalized this sentiment from Smith, and turned it into my own statement of purpose. This is as clearly as it can be put, who I am, and why I am like this. This is what I was talking about @profdork. Also @james3rdcomedy & @kblumusic, y'all are SUPER wrong about this movie. Lastly, WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR is only jst getting started. Rumble young man, rumble. #WillSmith #CharlieRose #MuhammadAli #Fear #courage #purpose #theonlythingwehavetofearisfearitself #fearitself #bumaye #interview #statementofpurpose #artistsstatement (at Charlie Rose Show)

Not spending as much time on drawing our even sculpture as I like to and still being productive. One doesn't simply stop being an artist when they're away from their studio or desk. I want my art to be in everything I do. In the way I perceive the world. In the way I interact with it. Why not? My mother always supported my creativity and always told me, "share your gift with the world". Gifts come in many forms. #artpractice #artistsstatement #everythingiseverything

Composite Portrait
For my final project, I will be compositing portraits of people and places that they love. Since, I am unable to get out and do a lot of shooting I will be experimenting with photoshop to make for more interesting portraits.
All of these photos, I took myself. I think this project means a lot to the people involved and I hope to create meaningful portraits using art and photography.

Hi I just found your blog and think it is great, I just have a question. My prof is teaching us about professional skills as an artist, and they include things like cold calls (she literally is getting us to contact companies that are our dream jobs) but my question is, have you ever heard an elevator pitch from an artist like a digital painter or something like that, because I tried looking for some info on it and couldn't find examples of how it is to be like.
Dear Anon,
I hope by “cold calls” you don’t mean via the phone, we don’t like those (see Agent KillFee’s post here).
There is actually a lot of information out there about elevator pitches, it’s probably just not specific to artists, because we tend to think of elevator pitches as being for more traditional “businesspeople.” But as a freelancer, you ARE a businessperson, so you’ve gotta know how to quickly tell someone what it is that you do. For an illustrator, it’s pretty simple, something like this is enough:“My name is _________________ and I’m an illustrator who specializes in (whatever your niche is) for the (your industry) industry.”
Of course, you need to know what your niche is first. You do know what your niche is, right?

Agent Critique here!
It’s awesome that your professor is teaching you business skills!  It’s such a critical component of an artist’s career, and a lot of programs gloss over it in favor of other things.  Talking to people (I include emails in “talking”) can feel really hard, but the more you do it the easier it gets!  When you email artists and ADs for practice, I would recommend letting them know that you’re a student;  the illustration industry is filled with generous educators, and if people have time they will often write back;  it’s always good to let people know what you want from them (for example, practice talking to people you admire).  Don’t feel badly if you do not get a response;  I promise you it’s not personal.
Like Agent Real Talk said, the idea of a pitch is very different depending on what kind of art you do.
Gallery work needs artist’s statements, and you need to be able to talk to not-necessarily-technically-savvy potential patrons about what your art is about and where it comes from.  Both of these are a type of elevator pitch.  Wikipedia goes a bit into different types and the artist statement history.  There’s LOTS of sites out there that talk about artist statements.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist%27s_statement
Illustration work doesn’t reeeeeally operate around artist’s statements and pitches;  it’s very art-centric.  You’re hired because your skills and voice match what’s needed for a client’s predetermined product.
BUT.  Pitching a PROJECT is a whole different animal.  A children’s book, or a graphic novel (or other comic)…that’s gonna need a pitch.  Each publisher is going to have their own guidelines, so look at what’s out there and see what’s being asked for.  For example, here’s Image Comics’ submissions guidelines: https://imagecomics.com/about/submissions
If you’re working on one of these creative-project things, definitely have an elevator pitch practiced and memorized for interacting face to face in a professional capacity.  I would recommend having a practiced 1-sentance summary as well (for casual “Oh hey, what kind of comics do you do?” “Right now I’m working on a French Revolution werewolf horror book.” off-the-cuff conversations. This is so you can talk about your work with people who don’t need the whole pitch ;-)).  You can use the structures for book and movie elevator pitches for comics as well.
Remember, artists grow and change throughout their whole careers.  You don’t have to decide your artistic identity OMG RIGHT THIS SECOND (and school is an awesome time to experiment and feel out different things), but learning how to focus and articulate what you are doing, even project to project, is a really important skill.

Dream Scented Rushes was the third exhibition I have contributed my artwork to as well as my third effort as assistant curator in collaboration with curator and artist, Azzurro.
I am so thankful for the experience and for having Azzurro trust me in the curation process, its an art in itself!
I'd like to share my artist statements, along with the artworks I contributed to this group show. The artist statement is detailed below.
The indentation lines on a brain are called, ‘sulci’ or ‘sulcus’. The biggest sulci on our brains separates it into two halves. The raised part of the brain is called a ‘gyrus’. To me, while I’m relatively unfamiliar with the terms, sound like components to a sci-fi narrative. The form of our brains with their organically fortuitous sulcus’ are capable of amazing things. Fungus has insighted curious theories, including Terrance Mckenna’s ‘Stoned Ape’ theory. Wherein, “psilocybin mushrooms (magic mushrooms) were the "evolutionary catalyst" from which language, projective imagination, the arts, religion, philosophy, science, and all of human culture sprang” (Appendix II: The Stoned Ape Hypothesis.)
Radiotrophic fungus was found with the ability to turn radiation in Chernobyl into energy. Mushrooms interact with their environment so cleverly; their diverse form is so intriguing too. Its understandable that fungi or toadstools are so prevalent as imagery in fairy tales etc.
The shapes and purpose of both brains and fungi are, upon further inspection, otherworldly. These globules that we live among, fungi and brains, grasped my imagination for this piece, to create a Wonderland that is unfamiliar, yet entirely reflective of our present reality.

Artists Statement
During this semester I have had a real interest in reflecting my surroundings and distorting them in some way, I am saying this in a very broad sense. One direction I took in relation to this was simply sitting at my favourite cafe and drawing the old women on the other side of room, however not being vigilant in detail, only grabbing her essence, driving in a different direction perhaps due to my subconscious. A very similar approach was took when aiming to grasp a moment in time or a collection of time, of life spent by the ocean, Lorne, where I have spent almost a third of my life. Playing board games with our family friends I would try to catch this fleeting moment, all sitting on the couch reading, I would do the same. In relation to this, it is the very feature on many of these works seeming unfinished that is essential, highlighting the impermanence of these moments, memories, compilations in my head and real life occurrences.
I also compiled together a collection of five ‘Snapchat’ pieces. Snapchat is an application designed to allow friends to send each photographs or footage which only lasts a certain amount of time, however I have been screen shotting them, collecting them. In this work alike the collection spoke of above, I am transforming something that is meant to be kept impermanent, permanent.
I continued on within the context of photographs that I had continuously been digitally exposed to, working on recreating images repeatedly ‘reblogged’ via blog dashboard, these involved paintings etc, however that most powerful work in this area was two drawings of the same image, a boy kissing a dog, however in my work the dog is practically cut out. I purposely drew this work with a delicate hand, the image seeming soft and aesthetically pleasing, however the content not so much; designed to ruffle the viewer, at unease of how to react. I repeated the drawing for emphasise, also experimenting with a variety of photoshop work, editing the photographs into a work of 4.
In addition to this, I explored transforming the old into the new, another form of distortion, using old ‘Paton’ books found at an Op shop, I experimented with a photocopier and various mediums to print on, warping the faces digitally.
A main focus through out a large fraction of this semester was the conspiracy of the Reptilian Elite, a conspiracy created by David Icke. I thoroughly researched his theory, as well as his personal life and believes, including intricate facts like where he lived and his favourite animal. Ironically, I became obsessed while attempting portray the mans obsession. My initial plan was to present a large detailed portrait of David Icke, a man not many would immediately if at all recognise, with a halo accompanying the image. With no explanation this piece would possibly confuse the viewer, leading them to believe this may just be one of many saints, a man of good will, or perhaps a family member. Within this piece I am distorting the viewers perception as well as distorting conventional roles of society as I place this man on a pedestal, who is labelled by the vast majority as ‘insane’ for his accusations. With my research, I began to make a vast amount of notes, sticking them on the next to the portrait, this leading me to the idea of creating an obsessive basement like environment, with notes, engravements and marks covering the wall. I created a hit list of the reptilians that were classified as icons, celebrities and powerful in our society; drawing portraits that were minuscule in comparison to David Icke’s. This contrast diminished those praised, worshipped and honoured in our society, and empowered the image of Icke. After an excessive amount of time spent rearranging the wall in a basement/investigation like manner it was decided that the intentions first thought of were most effective. This involving placing the piece amongst unrelated, softening pieces, enhancing the chance of the piece being misread by the viewer, placing a conscious idea that whoever this man may be, he is worthy of this high placement, above those we see powerful, the small portraits beside him.
I also continued along with the squid project for a while, digging into ideas of sea creatures as food and our demolishment of them, subliminally protesting against this, I created a variety of humanistic creatures with relations to the ocean (whether it be their species or what they are wearing). I also approached this in the opposite direction, relating banana peels to squids, squids to humans, in a combination of pieces, commentating on what society has depicted what is ok to demolish, mass consume, and what isn’t.
