Hey, hi and hello, it's @brick-enthusiast coming at you from the sideblog again!

As part of a friendly agreement with @things-about-cars-in-posts, I am here to introduce another race car.

You know Peugeot? In recent years, the French brand is probably best known for fighting tooth and nail to shake a reputation of dullness. However, you've probably heard - or perhaps you remember - that Peugeot used to be a whole lot more cool.

Well, this story takes place a little bit after that. Less than a year after the last story I told, in fact, in 1995. And the similarities between the two don't end there.

The car in question is the then-new Peugeot 806.

By all means a run-of-the-mill, boring people carrier, unveiled in 1994.

PSA Group had co-developed it with Fiat, so it was also sold as a Citroen, a Lancia and a Fiat.

(As you may remember from a recent post by @things-about-cars-in-posts!)

Anyway! Peugeot wanted to do something to promote their version of the so-called Eurovan. Someone, half-jokingly, suggested to take it to the racetrack.

That someone was Pascal Witmauer, the man in charge of Peugeot's advertising in Belgium, as well as marketing for the Belgian Procar racing series. Peugeot's "promotional event" was set to be 1995's running of the Spa 24 Hours.

A 24-hour endurance race, yes.

A 24-hour endurance race that was happening at the end of July. It was May.

The project was handed over to Kronos Racing, a Belgian racing team that would go on to build successful Peugeots and Citroens for the circuit as well as dirt. And well, they did complete it.

As much as a parts-bin-special it might have been, the Peugeot 806 Procar was a serious racing machine. Its interior was stripped of anything non-essential, the 8 factory seats were replaced by a single carbon bucket and a roll cage.

The engine and drivetrain were a mix of parts from the 306 Maxi rally car and the outgoing 405 Mi16 circuit racer, while the then-new 406 Supertourisme donated a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The van's speed certainly didn't lag behind. It qualified 12th overall and third(!) in its class. Not to mention that it certainly stood out in a field full of contemporary BMW 3-series and French hot hatchbacks.

By the start of the race, the big white box was already the crowd favorite. Pascal Witmeur (who also happened to be one of the 806's three drivers) recounts:

“Every time we passed by Raidillon¹, people were applauding. The public liked it, because apart from being atypical, it was often on two wheels!"

Unfortunately, mechanical issues didn't take long to show up. The team ran into brake problems an hour into the race. The engine itself gave out before the 10-hour mark, leading to a DNF for the Peugeot.

Not that it mattered to the public though. The touring van single-handedly improved the image of all MPV's² - not just the French-Italian quadruplets. Peugeot of Belgium had 5000 posters printed - all of which were given away signed by Witmeur.

"For a few hours, I was more more famous than Johnny Hallyday³!"

he laughs, admitting it was likely that many workers from Peugeot's local Sevel Nord⁴ factory came to see the race.

The very same Peugeot 806 Procar is still around to this day. After the race, it was reportedly kept by one Jean-Pierre Montron - founder of Kronos Racing - until his passing. It went up for sale in 2020 (wherein it had a bunch of articles I could use as sources written about it) and again in late 2022, when it failed to sell at auction.

Ah, this uh. thing! It was a tiny electric trike from just the time when caring about the environment started becoming cool (i.e. circa 1996). A little under 300 were made before Corbin Motors went bankrupt, unable to keep up with demand. Ohio-based Myers Motors acquired the rights after that and reportedly made around 30 more units before retiring the model.

NmG stood for "No more Gas" - and its replacement was called the Duo not just because it could seat two, but also because it "Doesn't use oil".

This is the single-door version of the Sparrow/NmG, but a version with two was available as well (though as far as I can tell, the other door was the trunk).

As for which of the two it is, I couldn't find any notable visual differences between the Sparrow and the NmG.

if I had a nickel for every time Ferrari disowned an F40 for being "too cursed",

I'd have (at least) 2 nickels. which isn't a lot but it's interesting that it happened (at least) twice.

This one, which started life as the race car variant, by the way was bought by a Belgian billionaire. He took one look at it and went "Hm. Not unique enough. Fetch me the angle grinder guy."

It has altered bodywork, engine boosted even farther past insanity, side-exit exhausts, F1 style suspension, uh, no roof, absolutely NO prancing horse badges, and non-standard yellow paint for good measure.

[ … ] ❀ you’re not from around here , are you? i figured because you totally just missed { TROY PACE } walking by. don’t tell me you don’t know who { HE/HIM } is ? they kind of look like { CHRIS EVANS } and i could be wrong but i think that they might be { FORTY ONE } years old right now. they’ve been living in palmview for the last { FOUR YEARS }. and i don’t know if anyone has ever told them this before but they kind of remind me of { ANTHONY BRIDGERTON } from { BRIDGERTON }. if you stick around the town long enough you might catch them in action working at { DONOVAN'S AUTO } as a { HEAD MECHANIC }. you see this town isn’t really that big of a place, some folks like to call them the { THE WANDERER } of palmview! they took a liking to the name too after a while, go figure. oh crap, they must have heard me yapping. they’re coming this way. i got to warn you though, rumor has it they can pretty { SARCASTIC } at times. i wouldn’t take it too seriously though, from the times i’ve spoken to them they seemed pretty { VENTURESOME } to me. we see each other all the time since they live in that { THREE BEDROOM } apartment beside me over in { SPRING STREET }. i better leave you to it. it was nice meeting you!

BACKGROUND.

troy often tells people that being brought up on the gold coast in australia was filled with surf, sand and a shit load of fun. from a very young age, his father taught him how to fix cars, surf at the local beach, skateboard, to laugh and the importance of family. while his mother introduced him to a wide range of music, cooking, would help pull pranks on his father and younger sister and taught him how to swim. there was never a dull moment in the pace house, that was for sure.

when it came to schooling, it was never something that troy overly enjoyed, though it was a social outing; how could he miss that? he was a gifted, and highly intelligent student, so his mother and teachers insisted - he passed tests and assessments with flying colours when he was in class - though he grew more interested in entertaining his peers and the opposite sex as time drew on.

though when troy is passionate about something, he gives it his all. he completed a light vehicle mechanics trade as a part of his high school certificated and graduated the top of his class. in fact, he won awards across the state for his outstanding work.

the first thing he did when he got his certificate was book a one way ticket overseas; he was taking a gap year with the hard earned money he'd saved over the years from side hustles.

and oh how he traveled. for months, he spent his time bouncing across the world - working in some places to earn extra money to keep going, sightseeing, but alas, he eventually made his way home.

in his early-twenties, troy was given the opportunity to head to the usa for a couple of months. leisurely at first, though on his travels ended up landing himself a job in an automotive shop. it wasn't something he was expecting, especially when he was there on a holiday visa, but that soon changed. and eventually... weeks turned to months, and he was working with some of the best in the country.

parental death, accident tw: though troy never thought he would be beckoned home by his sister at the young age of 29 because of a tragedy. their family were as close as they came, even if they argued and bickered like every other family - so hearing that his parents had passed made him physically sick. the people he idolised, looked up to and saw as role models - ripped from him by a tragic accident.

grief tw: troy was on the next plane to australia, grief struck and in shock. he didn’t want to go back home; he didn’t feel like he could but he had to for his sister. he had to step up and be the person that she needed - strong, in control, and head of the family. the entire time he was home, he wanted to flea; get back on a plane and never set foot in the country again as the memories of his childhood and his parents taunted him. haunted his every waking moment, and his dreams were plagued with their image. it was in those months he spent in their family home he made the decision for his sister, and himself -- they would never come back to australia again. the very second he could, troy packed up their life in the gold coast (what was left of it) and headed back to america, where bad habits became worst.

he was already a terrible drinker, and that just intensified. his habits with sleeping with different women every other night increased, seemingly like a broken record, all while pushing his emotions down because god forbid anybody else know what was going on inside. god forbid he address the trauma and grieve he was feeling. going into work got harder, and harder every day, but with time, he saw it as a form of connection; he was just like his father. 

PALMVIEW.

before moving to palmview, troy city hopped; looking for his 'temporary home'. he’d been through a few places over the years, staying a couple of months, a year at another, if he really enjoyed his time in one place, he would stay for a couple years. until he stumbled over palmview just under four years ago. he would often be found at donovan's through the day, and then at the bar after work. if he wasn't at the bar, he'd be at the gym, the beach, the park - somewhere. anywhere that he could be social and interact with people, he was there.

though he was about to up and leave, ready to take on his next adventure when life had another plan for him.

pregnancy tw: it has been no secret that the australian has a bit of a reputation as being... a player. not intentionally, but troy enjoys the pleasures of life through and through. whether that be sex, or food, or lounging on the beach for hours... but acting on his desires finally came around full circle. a couple of weeks before troy planned to call it quits on palmview, his fling announced her pregnancy to him. his exact reaction was “... well fuck.”

it was the last thing he had expected, nor planned for, but he knew he had to step up. family had always been everything to him, and he hadn't realised how much he actually wanted it. he kept his job at donovan's, bought a proper place in spring street and in all honesty... he has never felt more at ease. eleven months ago, troy’s daughter was born and has become the light of his life. the absolute light.

PERSONALITY.

alcoholism tw: if anyone were to tell troy that he had a problem with drinking, troy would tell them to fuck off and give them the finger; however, he does have a bit of a drinking problem. it’s become a coping mechanism over the years, a friend that greets him at the end of the day since his parents death. after all, a couple of drinks a night won’t hurt, right?

troy can be described as cheeky, playful and sarcastic (sense of humour, that is). a lot of people would assume he is being rude, when in reality he is simply being a smartass. he is loyal to a fault, incredibly passionate about matters he cares about, and tends to use humour as a deflection. he is a flirt through and through, and tends to sleep around more than he probably should.

he tends to not worry about a lot of things, letting life take him as it pleases - seeking the simple pleasures of life. although he does have his guard up mighty high. showing any weakness to anybody is not on his books, and spending time pitying himself is wasted time. bottle it up, and move on is the way he approaches his own emotions. he gets in his own head a lot.

sport has always been apart of troy's life since he had been able to walk. name a sport, and troy will do it. anything that will get him outside and moving. give him a spontaneous trip, and he’ll go on it. he does, however, enjoy lounging around watching netflix in the nude on occasion as well, though not so much since clara arrived.

for as long as troy can remember, he has been focused on enjoying life as it was thrown at him. not knowing what his purpose was or what his life meant. though his perspective has changed, and he is much more settled, goal orientated and made him see the bigger picture in life. becoming a father was exactly what he needed, without even realising it.

Also important detail is that in 2077 there are 20 teams, each with one car on the grid. Because they have one car and therefore one driver the liveries are custom to that driver.

Also, I am using Felix Dicit’s template to design these. It’s the 2023 livery design and yes logically F1 cars would have changed between 2023 and 2077 but I am a graphic designer not an automotive designer and was not about to design a whole new F1 car.

Johnny:

Number 23, Porsche Racing. Design is just his Porsche 911 but as an F1 livery. The decal is the same as the one on the 911 and his tattoo. Has had it on nearly every livery he’s raced.

Number 77, Arasaka Racing. Her standard livery features a simplified map of NC with the Arasaka logo placed where Corpo Plaza is on the map.

In the 2077 NC Grand Prix, she has a custom livery to celebrate her hometown race! Instead of the black, red and white of Arasaka, her NCGP livery features the colours of the NC flag!

These were really fun to make and I can’t wait to use them as a reference for my fic Asphalt & Chrome which you can read on ao3. The brainrot has truly gotten to me and I have been tormenting my irls with f1 yaps (both real and silverv) for the past few weeks 💅

Hey, that's me :D I am absolutely taking this opportunity to infodump >:) (I've decided to put this on the general-purpose sideblog, as I feel like it would fit here better than on my main) (Also, the 850 T5-R was available as a wagon as well. The above reblog kind of gives the impression that Volvo only added a sporty wagon option for the 850 R, which isn't the case.) But I digress!

The magnificent sporty cinder blocks mentioned above were, in fact, not the first hot 850's. And indeed, the very first one was made for the track.

Allow me to share with you, a story about throwing a brick at a touring car championship (again).

The year is 1993 and Volvo is doing fairly well. The newly-released 850 is a massive hit, betting the fate of the company on a single model has worked out for Volvo again. (fun fact! The 850's development was the most expensive industrial project Sweden has seen, at the very least up to that point)

However, the brand's image at this time - not doing so hot. Adjectives that usually come to mind when describing a Volvo? "Safe" is firmly there. "Practical" likely too. Possibly "built like a tank" or even "driven by an antiquarian". Not "cool" or "sporty", that's for sure.

This does not sit right with Volvo's senior VP Martin Rybeck. Naturally, it is decided that the swedish marque shall go racing about it. Win on Sunday... - you know how it goes. Their eyes are set on the 1994 season of the British Touring Car Championship (or BTCC for short), and the still-new 850 is selected as their weapon of choice.

Now, a little tangent about racing rules. As of 1994, BTCC is known for a particular ruleset aimed at leveling the playing field and making sure the racing cars are reasonably similar to road-going versions. A few relevant inclusions in said ruleset are as follows:

a maximum engine size of 2.0 liters (the engine also had to be naturally aspirated)

a minimum weight of 950 kilograms (for front-wheel-drive cars) (i.e. just about exactly the same as a stock NA Mazda Miata)

a ban on any aerodynamic equipment not present on the production automobile (this would go on to be lifted from 1995 onward, due to/after✨Alfa Romeo's Shennanigans✨ - perhaps a story for another time?*)

*not necessarily by me as i just don't know enough about it, but I've heard things

Not on the topic of rules anymore, but a thing crucial to the story nonetheless: at this point in BTCC, basically everyone is using saloons (i.e. sedans for Freedom Land residents). This will become relevant later.

Anyway, where was I? Right, Volvo's race car. The first place they go to is Steffansson Automotive (long for SAM), seeking help with puttting together a prototype.

Here, we get to the fun part. As the story goes, when SAM showed up at the factory to pick up an 850 shell to use as a base, only the wagons - sorry, estates - were available. Running on a tight schedule, SAM went "good enough" and took one of those anyway.

To be clear, Volvo and/or SAM did make a prototype out of a saloon version later, too. But in fact, another famous tidbit of lore pertains to the estate's aerodynamics. Volvo did test both the saloon and estate in a wind tunnel, and they found the latter produced sliiightly more downforce, courtesy of its long roof. You know, on top of all the weight in the back (not a good thing). Something something tradeoffs.

The final decision between the two body styles, however, doesn't come down to availability. Or aerodynamics. Rather... advertising. Remember how I said practically every car racing in the BTCC at the time was a saloon? Gee, if only Volvo could do something to differentiate themselves from the crowd and yoink all the attention for themselves...

BOOM. Wagon racer. Treating the 850's first season as a trial run, Volvo opts to forgo aspirations for the top spots and instead goes all in on publicity. As I alluded to, sticking out like a sore thumb tends to help with that. A stuffed collie riding in the back of the car on parade laps does too... I guess?

I should mention here that SAM would not be the one to run Volvo's racing team after the prototyping stage was done, oh no. That would be a job for Tom Walkinshaw Racing, Volvo's rival-turned-partner of helping-Jaguar-win-Le Mans fame. Put simply, people who know their stuff.

Of course, all the effort would be for nothing if either of two things happens: One, if the surprise is ruined. Therefore, Volvo is very secretive about their big funny. To the point of not even sharing it with their drivers, initially. Two, and more importantly, if the car sucks. Volvo may not need amazing results, but it would bury them even deeper in uncool-ness if they finished every race at the very back.

All this is to say that Volvo is Serious™ about the car. A good place to show this would be the engine. As TWR continues developing the 850, they find that the engine is a little underpowered. The 2.0-liter inline 5-cylinder unit is about 25 horsepower down on the rest of the field. A whole bunch of devilishly clever engineering later (which you can learn all about in this here youtube video), they squeeze out between 290 and 300 horsepower out of the 5-pot. To get there, the cost of each cylinder head climbs to almost thirty thousand quid in today's money.

But TWR is not done. Utilizing the 850's relatively lorge engine compartment, they become one of the first teams to try pushing the powerplant as low and as far back as possible. That, in turn, helps with weight distribution and handling. Y'know as much as it can be helped (alas, brick).

Now that you know the car, it is time I introduced the drivers. A Swede and a Dutchman are chosen to drive Swedish wagons in a British racing series... nah I'm trying too hard. Anyway!

The first gentleman is karting and open-wheeler prodigy Rickard Rydell. He stayed with Volvo for a few years after 1994, more on that later. The second one: Jan Lammers of Formula 1, IndyCar and Le Mans experience. Remember when I offhandedly mentioned a TWR-backed Le Mans win by Jaguar? Yeah, that was in 1988, and Lammers was one of the guys driving.

With that engine and those drivers, surely the 850 estate did well in the championship?

Haha, no. Or rather, it depends how you look at it.

The estate was fast on straights, but it wasn't very nimble in the corners. Courtesy of being, you know, so large that the competing drivers were salty about it.

Volvo finished 8th in the manufacturer's championship, only beating out Nissan and Mazda. Rydell and Lammers ended up 14th and 15th respectively in the driver's championship. The car's best race finish was a 5th. Not great results, even for a debut season.

The publicity though? Oh so, so very achieved. Everyone's jaws dropped in amazement when they saw the big bricks hopping curbs. Another famous bit of lore is that the 850 had the most column inches written about it out of all BTCC entries that year. (It was 1994, I am guessing magazines were still a big thing back then).

So on that front, mission accomplished.

As for the estate's legacy? Well, I've heard accounts of every Brit in 1994 seeing an 850 on the road and going "hang on isn't that the one from the circuit?" Volvo got their coolness back and, striking the iron while it's hot, went right to work on spicy road versions - as outlined in the reblog above.

Jan Lammers left BTCC after the 1994 season, but (as I've mentioned) Rickard Rydell stuck around with Volvo. 1995's season saw aftermarket aero bits becoming legal again, so the estate wouldn't be competitive anymore**. However, with all the development progress made on the 850 platform, Rydell secured a third place in 1995 with a saloon. Three years later, he went on the win the whole thing with a Volvo S40.

**Estates would have their day though. In 2017, the championship was conquered by a rear-wheel-drive Subaru Levorg.

Well, that's the story of the racing wagon. What's next, I hear you ask? I don't know... a racing minivan? Nah, no one would be silly enough to try that..

I saw it for maybe 3 seconds as they were backing out of a parking spot and my coworker was just like "Void wtf" and I now want @things-about-cars-in-posts to infodump about 90s volvos if possible 🥺

For all we talk about Mercedes is doing this, Toto should stop doing this, why are they doing that or not doing that, it is all speculation at the end of the day and we really do not have a say in how they operate. A lot of people underestimate the mental strengths athletes and especially F1 drivers have these days, especially with the additional media scrutiny. George yes will have bad days and good days that's just part of being human but after everything he's gone through in terms of contract negotiations and the scare of being dropped when he was with Williams he's got the mental strength and right mentality to bounce back from a lot. Not to mention that man knows how to network. Toto might be the most outspoken person about George and his performances and whatnot due do their closeness from George's younger years and whatever but there are connections being made behind the scenes that go beyond Toto that we don't see. There are people with very sharp eyes that will pick out the 'secret' meetings here and there but at the end of the day there's even more behind that we don't know. Toto's relationship with the board just by looking at who's attending what sponsorship events is also somewhat starting to deteriote. The relationships between George/Toto, George/Leiws, Lewis/Toto and George/Toto/Lewis has definitely changed, it is blantly obvious through their actions and statements, but at the end of the day there is a line of professionalism that hasn't been crossed yet no matter how many lines their media team has already crossed. However,there has been a shift in how George reflects on a session or a race weekend from the start of this season to now. We're a quarter of the way through the season, nearly half way through the year, the way the media team and Toto treats him and his performances week in week out is becoming more and more obvious for everyone (well everyone but the demons). The obvious thing now though is to wait and see what the board of management at Mercedes Benz is going to do. You can't trust INEOS to actually do something about this as they are literally there to pay someone's salary and get their dividends. Someone on the board that's part of INEOS also looks AI generated but that's a topic for another day. The board has to do something soon to get this team on track and I don't mean just having Markus or Britta turn up inconspicuously at a race weekend to control Toto's yapping. Someone needs to stop that man from saying everything on his mind sure but overall the car is currently the most important thing. We're a quarter of the way through the season, nearly half way through the year and no one on the board is going to say anything publicly? Sure privately there definitely has to be talks going on but without public acknolwedgement you're letting TW control the narrative within F1 media. Yeah sure the european elections are from what i've heard are rightly so important but I would also say as CEO of a massive automotive company you're also not supposed to be letting someone who is technically considered your subordinate just runaway with this nonsense yapping. You can not want to interfere with immediate team dynamics sure but at the end of the day Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team could and would/is been considered a subsidary of Mercedes as long as it carries the Mercedes name. The F1 team's performance is going to bleed into the reputation of Mercedes Benz whether you like it or not. Not to the extent of affecting car sales or anything major I'm not that delusional unlike some people but something will bleed over.

As for whether George will actually leave if given the chance? At the current moment in time I doubt it. No matter how many jokes we make here and there about oh Toto stop yapping about Max and Kimi you'll loose both your star drivers, at the end of the day again the board of management has majority of the say in driver line-up. The conversation of that bloody 10-year contract is about to expire might be true but honestly with the way George's network is going I don't think a contract with Toto is the thing we should be the most worried about. If Mercedes as a company don't want you there anymore you'll know it. It'll be blantly obvious. That whole Lewis situation I am sorry to say is half a product of his own fault. Who tf asks for a raise during a worldwide pandemic where the entire automotive industry is suffering from supply and sales issues not to mention the middle of freaking legal investigations/lawsuits still ongoing left by the previous CEO. With the amount of events and pr both online and offline that George is currently doing for Mercedes (the main company not the F1 team), the board still wants him. and they're not going to let him go very easily even if that contract with Toto runs out. Take a look at CH and HM's statements back in 2020/2021 about him only being on the Mercedes market. At the current moment yeah there's all that talk about oh George's contract is up again next year and CH is taking digs at Toto about taking George but realistically think about it. CH and TW have been going at it forever and ever taking digs at each other even when one of them is fighting the goddamn midfield. Unless the board at Mercedes gets involved in this little pissing contest these two are having I wouldn't be too sure about George leaving. And whilst Oliver Mintzlaff's comments for Toto are most definitely true I would say that man also has more to worry about. It might not be car performance but for rbr atm there worry is not car performance.

At the end of the day if the board still wants him, George is staying. Lando stayed with McLaren through all the shit they've been through and Charles and Ferrari. Disclaimer though: I heard this little factoid in a Hagerty video and I wasn't able to find an alternative source for it, nor have I ever heard about it before. So maybe take its validity with a grain of salt :D

And that was the root of their fallout. Not that Steve had anything to do with it. Oh no, it was all Bucky and his jealousy's fault. Because Bucky didn't know how to be a good friend to Steve. Not really. Instead of being happy for Steve when he finally found a girl who saw all the wonderful things about him that Bucky had seen first, Bucky couldn't stand it. Every smile, every laugh, every kiss, it all felt like a stab to the gut.

So, Bucky only had himself to blame.

But he couldn't do too much of that because he was the one who got drunk at Brock Rumlow's house and tried to match Natasha shot for shot. Who knew that they'd end up stumbling into Brock's parent's bedroom and change their lives forever. Because as much as Bucky hated how he acted around Steve and Peggy, and hated how much he drank that night due to the hellacious hangover the next morning, he'd never take back what happened that fateful night. After all, it was what led to the first of the three best things that had ever happened to his life: his daughters.

Idly, Bucky wondered whatever happened to Steve and Peggy. In his wildest fantasies, he'd like to think that they never made it that far. Like they broke up before freshman orientation. Or hell, even before the first week of August, Bucky wasn't picky.

Sometimes, that made him feel even shittier about all of it. Made him feel like the hypocrite that he was. Bucky didn't have a right to wish such unhappiness on Steve. That wasn't how love worked. But sometimes his broken heart couldn't help it. It did whatever it wanted and Bucky was just there to enjoy the pathetic ride.

Because that was what he felt like whenever he thought of Steve Rogers, pathetic.

Vienna giggled at that. Intently watching Bucky work, the pair sat in companionable silence while the radio played some old rock song from George Barnes's youth. Not that either of them minded. These were some of Bucky's favorite moments.

"Hey, um," Vienna started, nervously tucking her frizzy auburn curls behind her ear, "Can you take me to the movie's tonight?"

"Sure," Bucky easily agreed. "What time?"

"The movie starts at nine."

Pausing again, Bucky returned his gaze to his daughter, "That's kinda late, don't cha think?"

Shrugging, "Luke doesn't get off until eight."

"Oh," Bucky nodded to himself, finally getting it. So, it begins. Of course, he knew the day was coming. After all, Enola and Bianca had started dating around the same age. It didn't make it any easier, but it almost seemed inevitable. Vienna was the last one though. His baby. And she was growing up. Pretty soon, she'd be off at college like Bianca, or going for her doctorate like Enola.

Deciding that he was too distracted to continue babying his bike, Bucky grabbed one of the stained rags and wiped his greasy hands on it. As he stood, he headed back inside, and bypassed their overweight orange tabby, Nemo. The cat giving him a loud yowl before circling his empty fish-shaped food bowl.

Washing his hands, Bucky assured the cat, "Just a minute, Christ."

Giggling, Vienna scratched the top of the cat's head before grabbing the expensive organic cat food. Bucky dried his hands and muttered, "Damn cat eats better than I do."

Playfully, Vienna rolled her eyes and gave Nemo another scratch behind his ear. "He's just jealous of you. Don't listen to anything he says."

Shaking his head, Bucky grabbed the stack of mail. Bill. Bill. Another bill. Spam. Avon catalog for the woman who lived there in the early 2000s and has since passed away. More bills. More spam. A letter for Bianca. Extremely early birthday card for Enola. And then –
