my favorite arthurian movies (part 3/3)
More details (and youtube links for the less known movies) under cut. Some of these I love, some are so bad so good, some are beautifully epic, some are just funny.
Sire Gauvain et le Chevalier vert (2004): Short French movie about Gawain and the Green Knight. Very loyal to the story, one of my favorite Gawain movie. You can contact the producers here to buy the dvd.
King Arthur (2002): One of the first attempts to make arthuriana into an epic historical retelling. It definitely failed, but it is still a nice movie to watch. it focuses on Arthur and Guinevere as enemies to lovers.
Merlin and Arthur the Lion King (2010) (youtube): Ridiculous animated movie, this one is ugly and predictable but look... it is so fun. And it has the first redeemed Mordred in movies ever.
Avalon High (2010): Movie adaptation of the novel by the same title, except that it messes up the whole story. Full of inconsistencies but such a classic ridiculous story.
Dragons of Camelot (2014) (youtube): So bad so good, very bad, very entertaining. Galahad is the adopted son of Arthur and he escapes to find his father Lancelot when Morgana conquers Camelot. It is also the first time we have a movie focusing on Galahad and Lancelot, and where Dindrane appears.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017): The first attempt to create a franchise revolving around King Arthur, very Marvel-inspired. The plot is forgettable but the action is really fun.
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (2017) (youtube): Unforgettable movie, this is so so bad, and absolutely ridiculous so you need to watch it. Aliens, modern days arthurian characters, Morgana-mecha, sympathetic Mordred.
The Green Knight (2021): Truly a work of art. A re-interpretation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and one of the best arthurian movies out there.
Kaamelott: The First Chapter (2021): Sequel of the Kaamelott tv show. The next chapter part 1 will come out in 2025.

So there is a 2010 Disney Channel original movie called Avalon High, loosely based on a book of the same name, where a bunch of school kids are reincarnations of Arthurian Legend, with the film's leading lady being King Arthur.
My conspiracy theory is that it was initially ideated as an original property (it's not that unique of an idea, plenty of people have likely thought of it on their own) because there are so many wild differences between the movie and the book. It genuinely feels like at some point during production, someone came in and were like, "Hey, isn't this like that one book?" and executives were like "Oh fuck" and just grabbed the rights to make an adaptation because they were too deep into making this thing and it was cheaper than restarting it, canning it, or dealing with a lawsuit.
I have no way to prove this, but I think it's funny, so I'm sticking with it.

Hopefully it won't be rude, (I have got a couple of uestions) but how the heck did you manage to find , buy and own the Jackie Polo Ralph Laren blue white stripe sweater?!
I haven't seen it anywhere and I have bee seaching for months.
Would you mind showing us your Yellowjackets collection?
What other TV shows and movies you love? Music?
Do you think people who haven't watched the show nad know nothing about it will love or hate it based on the first two episodes?
Thank you for your blog, it is fantastic. The amount of time you are spending on it clearly proves your love for the show.
No it’s okay, I enjoy answering questions!
I got my Jackie sweater off of Ebay but I spent a long time searching for one before that. I found it helpful to add variation to my searches (some more vague and some specific) on the different platforms and when possible (on sites like Ebay or Mercari), save the searches so I would get notified when possible matches popped up. You could also try putting a photo of the sweatshirt into Google Lens to see if any show up for sale in the results. Poshmark, Depop, and Thredup are also good places to look as those are specifically for buying and selling clothing.
As for my personal collection I don’t really have it in a nice display or anything (most of it’s just hung in my closet) so here is a collage of the items I have:
Tumblr media
I didn’t include a handful of pieces such as the custom items I’ve made like my letterman jacket as well as some items I got that are inspired by the show and a few figurines.
I also want to add that overall the majority of the pieces in my collection I was able to purchase for deals less than $15 and I’ve been collecting for about 2 years so I didn’t get these all at once. Additionally quite a few were given to me as gifts.
I enjoy a lot of other shows but the main ones are Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural. I’m also excited for the new episodes of School Spirits and Ghosts (CBS) on Paramount+ which should be out soon. As for movies, the ones I probably rewatch the most are the Goldfinch (2019), Avalon High (2010), and Mermaids (2003) but not in that order.
I like a lot of different music but this is what Recieptify says about the music I listened to in 2024:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A fun fact is that the Runaways song “Cherry Bomb” has consistently been in my top 5 songs of the year since I got my Spotify in 2017.
In regard to new people watching the show, I think that someone would generally know after watching the first two episodes if they wanted to continue the show. It’s really just a question of personal taste. There’s plenty of shows I’ve watched the first few episodes of and knew it wasn’t for me or inversely that it was a show I was interested continuing. I think F Sharp and the Pilot do a great job at setting up the characters and the rest of the show as well as being upfront as to what the show is about.
For me, I was already interested in the show because I’d been seen Sophie Thatcher in “When The Streetlights Go On” and so I was following Yellowjackets on here as the first season aired. I continued to follow the show through the second season before finally catching up and watching it all before the last two episodes aired.
Sorry if this is too long, hopefully I was able to answer your questions!

WORST MODERN ADAPTATION! ROUND 1B, MATCH 1 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once Upon a Time (2011 - 2018) is based off various fairytales; Avalon High (2010) is based off Arthurian legend.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Once Upon a Time (2011 - 2018):
Only the first season is a decent Snow White adaptation. Once the writers started to try and cram every fairytale character ever into the show it became convoluted as hell
It's a soap opera. It's a family drama. Everyone is related. Frankenstein is there.
Avalon High (2010):

Watching one of my favorite dcoms, it's from 2010 (shocker). Avalon High. This movie has everything for me. It has bad camera shots, it has weird interactions, it has evil teachers, it even has a neurotic little gay & autistic coded side kick. Chefs kiss.

Idk if I can really comment more than a “I’m sorry that happened” in relation to your party acting like that, considering I’ve played in exactly 2 one-shots ever and have no experience with character development or character/player interaction friction, but I do want to say one thing:
You are a really strong writer. I’ve been struggling all summer to concentrate on reading. Normally books are my solace in the summer, but they just haven’t been there for me this year. Being truly sucked into any story has been rare recently, but I almost forgot to keep drinking my smoothie while I read yours. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know her backstory or anything else; it felt real/was immersive, and her refusal to be treated poorly + her refusal to back away from her fear of facing her siblings after all this time both felt so good. I probably would have been able to tell even without your introduction that these refusals are Growth for her, are a new level of maturity that she is having to engage with for likely the first time.
You’ve clearly got some real talent with language/storytelling!
Wow thank you, that's really high praise! :)
I've only recently gotten back into writing, this year was the first time I've written anything since 2010, so I'm still finding my flow I think. I honestly didn't realise how much I missed it.
Normally I can put up with my friends maybe taking something in game too far, and there was a really messed up moment several sessions back where the rift began between our rogue and my Avalon that my mate Sharn didn't even think of as a big deal at the time but I took it and plugged it into the character development section of my brain and it led to some really good role play from the group. And this weekend just gone was probably, from their perspective, the same thing. But based on my own headspace at the moment I really saw how this situation would affect my character...I actually cried myself to sleep about it which sounds lame to admit, because retiring her isn't something I considered lightly, but she's been disrespected for the last time. She might be the youngest member of her party but I'm so proud of how far she's come and she deserves to be happy.

has anyone else read the book avalon high by meg cabot?
i just watched the movie with my sister cause i saw the title while we were browsing and it just brought up a memory of reading that book in like middle school
and i barely remember the plot, i remember like a few random locations but nothing about what actually happens
but as we were watching (aka mostly commenting and talking over it but dont worry i am a subtitles girlie) i looked up the book and read the wiki page
and in the part about the film adaptation they describe all the changes and like they make no sense?? like the whole premise is that the school sort of corresponds to the whole king arthur and the knights of the round table story, but they totally change who a bunch of the characters correspond to and even the mc's name?
it truly boggles the mind and the only reason for it i can think of is to try and make the film have plot twists
thats literally the only reason
but its very fun to watch with a friend because it was made in 2010 with an obviously low budget so it just looks so bad sometimes

My Review of Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
See a full list of my book reviews here
*Disclaimer: there will be spoilers later on in the review*
Review Word Count, non-spoiler: 824 Review Word Count Total: 1,432
So, I caved. After seeing all the hype that Legendborn was getting both on here and on TikTok I was finally convinced to read it despite the fact that I’m not a fan of Arthurian legends or really anything medieval for that matter and honestly, it does live up to the hype. Especially if you’re like me, and were weirdly obsessed with that Disney Channel movie, Avalon High, back in the day, this book has the same exact vibes and a very similar premise. Also, sidenote, I was Googling the movie to make sure I was remembering the title correctly, I found out it was originally a book written by Meg Cabot, aka the author of The Princess Diaries, so do with that information what you will.
The book introduces us to Bree Matthews, a 16-year-old girl grieving the loss of her mother after she died in a tragic car accident. Her grief drives her away from home and to UNC-Chapel Hill, a university that has an early college program for promising high school students. On her first night there, she witnesses a flying demon that feeds on human energy get taken down by a group of teenagers, called Legendborn (roll credits), decedents of the knights of King Arthur with incredible abilities. When one of the teenagers, a Merlin, tries to wipe her memory of the night and it doesn’t work, Bree remembers this same magic was used on her the night her mother died. Realizing that there is more to her mother’s death than what she was originally led to believe, she infiltrates the Legendborn society on campus with the help of Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn, as they discover the secrets of the society while on the brink of a magical war between the demons and Legendborn.
Like I said earlier, this book is great, definitely worth the hype it’s getting, it’s a great modern interpretation of Arthurian legends with a good amount of diversity that is treated respectfully and realistically. Of course, the most obvious one is Bree, a black girl, who is not only going through this magical adventure but being black and navigating the world and the magical adventure. Not to give too much away outside of the spoiler section but Bree’s background and the history of black people as a whole in the US is a big part of the plot and Bree’s journey which I think is beautiful. As a non-black POC I think that part of Bree’s story was done so well, and I can really sympathize with her despite not being able to explicitly relate. There’s also a nonbinary character in the book named Greer and I honestly didn’t fully realize they were nonbinary because they were so seamlessly integrated into the story that I didn’t bat an eye at the use of they/them pronouns. And there are also queer characters who are unapologetically queer, and happy, and just being people, their identities are very much a part of their character but not their whole character.
And, for being the author’s debut novel, it honestly isn’t written like one, the writing is good and easy to follow so you become immersed in the world very easily. I will say the prologue is written a bit like a 2010s, Wattpad story and some of the rest of the book has the same vibes from time to time but it honestly isn’t a big deterrent. I will though, complain about the love triangle because I hate almost all love triangles and think they’re bad. I might’ve said this before, but I think most love triangles are a cheap way to make your plot more exciting (which this book did not need at all, it’s exciting enough as is) especially when one of the potential partners is a genuinely nice person and the other one is very obviously a POS. Honestly, the whole book could’ve done without it, the writing and story were compelling enough to where a love triangle wasn’t needed to fill in any spots that were lacking and I was going to talk more about why I specifically don’t like certain characters as love interests but I noticed that this fandom is violent about shipping so I will keep it to myself.
Overall, I do recommend the book to anyone who’s looking for a fresh take on Arthurian legends or YA fiction and can stomach your standard amount of blood and violence. There are descriptions of violence experienced by slaves and general racism so be warned. Besides the aforementioned love triangle beef I have, and the fact that there is some Welsh that doesn’t get translated into English which was a pet peeve of mine even more so now that I have made a Welsh friend after I returned the book to the library, so I’ll just never know. I will give this book an it’s very good and worth all the hype out of ten.
Spoilers Below!!
Ok, let’s talk a little bit about the love triangle. I will preface this with the fact that Bree is 16 and hasn’t really experienced any romantic attention up until this point so she’s acting how a regular 16-year-old would act in that situation, and I know full well that 16-year-old me wouldn’t have been any smarter. That being said, I honestly think that Sel is a bad choice based on his actions in this book alone (yes, I have read the second one but I’m not going to talk about it here). This man literally spent the majority of the book trying to kill her and sent literal demons after her, but they slow danced once, and he called her “cariad” now y’all are foaming at the mouth. This isn’t hate towards Sel as a character, mostly, but like, come on. That’s all I’m saying because this fandom is violent, and I like living.
Moving on to things that don’t make me mad! Let’s just take a moment to appreciate Bree’s root. I absolutely loved how the author wove in traditional African and African American spiritual practices into a world where the knights of the roundtable were magical beings and the contrast, chef’s kiss. We have root where the users give back the magic they use, make offerings, and talk to their ancestors regularly versus aether which is just taken. There is a great metaphor here about colonialism and world history as a whole, but I’m not going to go deep into that and get too radical in a book review so I’m going to let you all just think on it.
Another thing I really liked about the book was how real the characters felt, all of them were unique individuals with distinct personalities and motivations. Not all the characters were necessarily good people, some were honestly horrible and evil, but you can understand where they’re coming from even if you don’t agree, a la “cool motive, still murder”. I did like that in the story the villain wasn’t evil just because, he had a reason to want to be evil, but it honestly made for a more enjoyable story especially when you contrast Nick’s dad with the demons who are evil just because. Also, just a side note on Mr. Davis being the villain all along, that was so unexpected but made so much sense when he explained his evil plan, I think it was a fun surprise that I hadn’t predicted in the beginning.
Of course, I have to talk about the twist at the end where it turns out that Bree is Arthur’s scion and not Nick, mind blowing. There’s something, I don’t know how to describe it, but karmatic about a black girl being the king of the round table after her ancestor was raped by the scion of Arthur all those years ago. That old slave owner couldn’t have ever predicted that his disgusting actions would one day see a black girl as the head of his secret organization, so take that horrible man. On top of that, the organization as a whole is pretty racist, just the way that it’s all white and how they treat Bree and Sarah’s dad, so double take that racists, a black girl is your king.
Moral of the story, read this book for a YA adventure mixed with serious real-world topics and a lovable cast of characters. Everyone who is hyping this book online is correct and I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy especially since there are rumors that the last book in the series will be released sometime next year.

mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 4: From 2014 to 2017
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 3: From 2002 to 2010 -> here Part 5: From 2018 to 2023
For this part I just wanted to talk a bit about sympathetic Mordred.
Through time we started to see a more sympathetic Mordred. I think the first iteration in audio/movies/tv was the the Blind Guardian's song in 1995. For the first time we have Mordred as a protagonist, mainly lamenting of regret, pain and lonliness. While I do not know why they decided to focus on Mordred, it is also notable that writing a more sympathetic Mordred was already happening in novels, around the same time. I used the arthurian list of novels I made so I might have missed any, but at this time we have 1956 "The Great Captains" by Henry Treece, "Sword at Sunset" by Sutcliff, "The Wicked Day" (the first novel focusing on Mordred as protagonist) by Mary Stewart, 1982 "The Idylls of the Queen" (Phyllis Ann Karr), 1983 "The Mists of Avalon" (Marion Zimmer Bradley), Persia Wolley's 1987 Guinevere trilogy, 1988 "The road to Avalon" by Joan Wolf and 1988 "The Book of Mordred" by Hanratty all depicting Mordred as a more round character, as someone the reader can feel sympathy too or even enjoy or relate to.
A slighty sympathetic but still villanous potrayal can then be found in 2001 ("The Mists of Avalon" miniseries) but we have to wait till 2008 ("Merlin", BBC) to have a tv Mordred who is actually shown trying to do the right thing (at least for a bit), and working with Arthur. I think this is more due to the fact that "Merlin" often tries to depict villains' origins and motivations than a real conscious attempt to redeem Mordred or make him less villanous.
Other following examples are the kid movie 2010 "Merlin and Arthur the Lion King" and the album 2014 "High Noon Over Camelot" that positions Mordred in a co-protagonist role and fully allows the listeners to empathyze with him. The Fate franchise (the introduction of Mordred should be around 2012 in the novels) continues on this trajectory, making Mordred a main sympathetic and beloved protagonist in many of the adaptations.
2014 High Noon Over Camelot album by The Mechanisms: The song I used is "Peacemaker". The album has multiple arthurian characters sung by different artists, and Mordred is interpreted by Ashes O'Reilly. This is also the first time we have an explicitly queer Mordred (outside of novels), as Mordred is a trans man in this retelling. The story is a Western reimagining of arthuriana, and another case of a sympathetic Mordred - this time Mordred is more overtly sympathetic and even reconcile with his father Arthur at the end.
2011 recording of Albeniz's "Merlin": Piotr Prochera plays Mordred. This is another recording (no dvd, this has been shared by Piotr Prochera acor himself on youtube) of the "Merlin" opera.
2015 recording of "Le Roi Arthus": This opera is probably my favorite arthurian opera. It was created by Ernest Chausson between 1886 and 1895 and it is sung in French. Mordred is a bass and a classic villain, here jealous of Lancelot and the attention Guinevere gives Lancelot. This 2015 version was a modernized edition, with the knights depicted as modern soldiers. Mordred here is played by Alexandre Duhamel.
2016 Rex, youtube webseries: This series is on Severe Chill Studios' Youtube channel, with 48 short episodes. The series is a vlog of arthurian characters living in modern times (no reincarnations, just reimaginings). It follows Rex (Arthur) a student who is dealing with his abusive family and the brothers Merlin and Lancelot. Moore (Mordred) is Arthur's spoiled and arrogant friend (played by Daniel O’Sullivan). He lets Rex crash at his place for a bit, and is often depicted insulting his mother and calling her slurs. If you decide to watch this just know the series has some pretty heavy themes (a part from domestic abuse it also touches on terminal illness). Youtube link.
2017 Fate/Apocrypha: This is one of the many anime adaptation of the Fate franchise. Mordred is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. The Fate franchise is massive and deals with numerous spin-offs or even alternative realities to tell the tales of wars/battles for the Holy Grail mainly fought by Servants who are personification of historical/legendary figures. Fate/Apocrypha is based on a series of novel and is an alternative timeline to the previous Fate/Stay Night anime and also the first time we have Mordred in the anime. Mordred is here a Servant, they are the cloned-son of Saber (Arthur/Arturia, who is a woman) and Morgana. Their story is massive so let me just say I am using they/them for Mordred because the Fate series is very ambigous regarding theri gender. They are born as the close of a woman (Saber) and often referred with female pronouns through the series, they hate being called "a girl", and also hate being called "a boy". While I do not think the series was making an effort to actually depict a non-binary character, I do believe Mordred can easily be read as one.
2017 King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table: 2017 was a wild year for arthuriana but nothing was as wild as this movie. The movie follows the life of some arthurian characters' descendant living in Thailand. Morgana and Mordred (banished in arthurian times) ended up in space, working with aliens, and are now back to destroy the descendants. The movie is full over dramatic close up, Morgana turning into a mecha, fighting scenes and more. Interestingly, given how ridiculous the movie is, Mordred is depicted as a sympathetic (almost) villain. He is played by Russell Geoffrey Banks.
2017 King Arthur: Excalibur Rising: The scene I used in the video is right at the start, as the movie is set after Arthur's death. While Mordred might seem sympathetic there he is actually a pretty violent villain for the rest of the movie. The story is focused on Owain (Arthur's illegitimate son) trying to take back the crown from Mordred and Morgana. Here Mordred (played by Gavin Swift) is Arthur's incestuous son with Morgana.
2017 Legend, youtube webseries: A webseries you can watch on Tufts University Television's channel (link here). The series has 7 episodes and an epilogue and is set in a university. Each student is an arthurian character, with Mordred (Morty) as the overly joking, friendly guy who is hiding some deep hatred and jealousy towards Arthur. Unfortunately I do not remember if Mordred is Arthur's half-brother or just a friend. Mordred is played by Yuval Ben-Hayun. The story and production were pretty good, so I recommend it!
2017 Mordred La Revolte: I cheated a bit as this movie is the end of a long webseries. The series started in 2013 and run till 2018 with two season and can still be found here on youtube. The series was created by Tommy-Lee Baïk (who also played Mordred) and is in French. Unfortunately I cannot really tell how arthurian the series is, but the plot does not mention other arthurian characters. If I am not wrong, la Revolte is simply S2 turned into a movie.
2017 Fate/Grand Order The stage - Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot: Part of the Fate saga but in the Grand Order timeline, this is a stage adaptation of one of the events in the videogame Fate/Grand Order. In particular, it should be the same story shown in the later movie Camelot part 1 as the full title is Fate/Grand Order THE STAGE - Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot Replica; Agateram. I will explain more about it in the next part of this Mordred series. Chihiro Kai plays Mordred.

Open at the Close (IFD 2025)
Tumblr media
International Fanworks Day theme: Fan communities
Summary:
July 15, 2011 marks the end of an era for Miles with the midnight release of the final Harry Potter film. But it also marks a new beginning as well.
(Follows in the same continuity as A Mingling of Magics: The Legacy of Merlin, and happens over six months post-AMOM, so there will be some allusions to BBC Merlin and to that fic.)
Link
-----
It was no secret that Miles had had a hard time making friends over the years.
It was not that he’d never had friends. Back in elementary school he’d been best friends with Liam Dempsey, climbing trees and getting into trouble. Even after Liam had moved away, Miles had at least been friendly with his classmates in after-school groups for years.
But while his visions of the future had been infrequent back then, the few instances where he’d suddenly fallen over or blurted out something he shouldn’t know in front of the class… well, it started to get him a reputation as the “weird kid”. And as puberty kicked in and kids started separating off into groups, Miles found himself a bit adrift, even among the school’s few nerds. Marco Campbell’s transfer to Avalon in their freshman year and subsequent bullying didn’t help either.
And he was okay with that. The fewer people got close, the fewer people could find out his secret. (Or, so he told himself.) So, he dug into his school work, proving himself academically to fill the void until Allie came along.
*.*.*.*
One place Miles had never felt lonely, though, was with Harry Potter fans.
Miles had gotten into the books around the time the first film came out, and they felt like a refuge. Like Harry, Miles felt out of place among “muggles”. Like Hermione, he was the smart one who alienated others at first, but still managed to find her people.
So whether he was participating in forums theorizing what was going to happen in the next book (Miles personally championed the “Harry is the Heir of Gryffindor” theory) or going to Potter-themed events at the library dressed in fake glasses and a Gryffindor scarf (he may have identified with Ravenclaw, but he looked too much like Harry to pass that up), he felt happy, swept up in the excitement of a shared love connecting them all together.
And while his mother preferred to get the new books at the store the next morning rather than chaperone him to the midnight releases (he was a little young and she had to work, after all), the movies were a whole different story.
Summer 2007 had been the Summer of Potter, with the final book and Order of the Phoenix movie releasing within weeks of each other. And while 13-year-old Miles couldn’t get his mom to take him to the book release (“You can just read it the next day, honey”), he did manage to convince her to take him to the midnight release of the film, since it wouldn’t be out on DVD for months.
And sure it was just him and his mom going, but he still didn’t feel alone. Because the rest of the crowd was just as excited as he was for the exact same thing. He even chatted with some people a little older than him while waiting on line to get in, wondering which scenes would make it into the film? Would Umbridge and Bellatrix be as awful as in the books?
Two years later, Miles and his mom once again made the trek to their local theater at 9PM to wait on line to see Half-Blood Prince in theaters at midnight. Miles, even as he struggled with high school and Marco and the increasing severity of his visions, even as he would later rant in the car on the way home about how the film focused too much on romance and not enough on the Tom Riddle backstory scenes, at least for a handful of hours felt some sense of release and connection. He wasn’t the weird kid or the victim or the secret psychic or even the honors student -- just another fan amid in the crowd.
*.*.*.*
But then Fall 2010 happened. And his whole world got flipped upside down.
Suddenly, there was Allie. And magic. And a destiny he couldn’t begin to comprehend. Not to mention, that whole thing in New York.
It made all those Merlin-related expletives in the books feel super weird in hindsight.
So, when the film release for Deathly Hallows Part 1 rolled around, Miles was honestly too overwhelmed to even think of going to the midnight release. (Plus, like, it was a school night this time. Even Harry Potter wasn’t worth tanking his flawless attendance record.)
His mom understood, but while they still managed to go during opening weekend (and some of the purposeful changes the film had made actually intrigued Miles instead of infuriating him), it… didn’t quite feel right.
He’d sort of lived the plot of a Potter book twice over now, between the prophecy, the secretly-evil teacher, and the epic battles. And in the process, he’d made some real friends.
It took him some time to figure it out, but… perhaps just being part of the crowd wasn’t enough anymore.

The summer finally rolled around, and with just a couple of weeks until the midnight release, Miles approached his mom making chicken parm in the kitchen, her wavy, chestnut hair tied back out of her face.
“Hey, Mom, um… I wanted to-to talk to you about something.”
Helen peered over her shoulder, eyebrows furrowed over clear blue eyes. “Oh dear, you’ve got that serious look. Did you have a vision?”
“Actually, no.” The visions had actually decreased a bit since he’d started learning magic, which was a relief. “But, there’s something I wanted to run by you.”
She popped the casserole dish in the oven and set the timer before turning to him fully. “Okay, shoot.”
Miles scratched the back of this head anxiously. “Would you hate it if it wasn’t the two of us going to the Deathly Hallows midnight release?”
Helen blinked. “You mean… you want to go with your friends?”
“Not just go with them. I think maybe I’d like to have them over here first?” He cringed. “It’s going to sound so cheesy, but, I thought – since it’s the last time – we could really celebrate it. Make some Potter-themed snacks, watch the last one here, and then go over to the movie. The whole nine yards.” He shrugged. “I don’t know why, I just… I want to share this last time with them. Now that I can. I know they’ve collectively seen most of it, even Marco, but they’ve never done a midnight release. But, Mom…” His eyes trailed to the floor.
Helen walked over to him with a wan half-smile. “Miles, honey, I’ve loved sharing Harry Potter with you all these years.” She placed a hand on his shoulder, her thumb rubbing circles into his skin. “I know it’s gotten us through some really rough times.”
He nodded, not wanting to remember. Had it really been less than a year since the bullying has stopped?
“But having a real, true group of friends is all I’ve ever wanted for you. And I think sharing this fan tradition you love with them is a fantastic idea.”
Miles crossed his arms. “You don’t think they’ll think it’s weird?”
She scoffed. “Honey, they’ve seen you use actual magic and they didn’t run. I don’t think you sharing your love of fake magic will scare them. Not if they’re real friends.” She raised a finger. “Just promise we’ll go together that weekend and you won’t give anything away.”
“You already read the book.”
“You know better than I do how much they change from the books. Though, honestly, as long as they keep the Molly Weasley-Bellatrix fight, I’ll be happy.”
He grinned. “Fine. Deal.” After a moment’s hesitation, he pushed his teenaged embarrassment aside and threw his arms around her. “Thanks, Mom.”

Avalon High (2010):

Hooked by Emily McIntire:
withcindy has a whole video on it explaining why it's bad, but the basic gist is the romance is horrible and the love interest has issues. (It's fine if you like it, you know.)
