In April 2021, an Ohio teenager was apprehended after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase one Friday afternoon on Interstate 75 through Sumter and Marion counties near the Villages.

Cody James Russell, of Miamisburg, Ohio, described as having a "clean cut appeaance" was at the wheel of a stolen black Dodge Durango with Ohio plates at 4:25 p.m. Friday, April 16, northbound near Mile Marker 322 in Sumter County when his fast-moving vehicle began kicking up debris from the side of the roadway causing a hazard for other motorists, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A patrol car from FHP pursued the vehicle into Marion County at a speed of 115 miles per hour where the Dodge Durango left I-75 at Exit 341 and began to travel in the wrong direction on County Road 484. Russell subsequently turned onto County Road 475A where he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.

Russell began running after exiting the vehicle and lost his shoes.

A Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 joined in the hunt for Russell. After he was captured, he was taken back to the crash scene where he was positively identified by the FHP trooper who had initiated the chase.

Law enforcement confirmed that the Dodge Durango had been stolen in Montgomery County, Ohio. It had a license plate that had been assigned to a 1997 Toyota Avalon.

Russell was arrested on multiple charges including grand theft auto. He was already on probation. He was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.

Russell spent the next 14 months in county jail before being transferred to custody in Ohio to take care of some other matters. Two months later he was transferred to Florida DOC control.

The Best Album Per Year for Sixty Years

No-one asked for it, of course, but I do like making lists, so here's me pondering what have been the best Long Players in the album artform the past 60 years. I originally tried to keep it to just one per year, but many years that proved impossible: when listing multiple albums I have tried ranking them with the one I feel narrowly edges out the others first, and I use lower case to indicate an album that is not at the same level as others on the list but was the best I've heard from that time.

Okay so as a sister who has a younger sister with a big age gap I feel qualified to put some tiny headcanons on Marco and Mariposa

Marco tends to spoil Mariposa when he goes out grocery shopping/snack shopping with snacks much to his parents chargin

Because he’s usually watching Mariposa when his parents are busy he ends up watching the shows/movies she likes and gets emotionally invested (A few examples are Sofia the First, The Lion Guard, Elena of Avalon, and Bluey)

Yes he will sing alongside her with the songs

He is never going to out loud admit that he cried during True Colors but Janna knows and blackmails him. Tom makes fun of him at first, then he watches it and is full on sobbing as well.

Mariposa sneaks to use his phone but instead of using it to play games she uses it to take silly photos of herself and others (Karma will strike because he keeps most of them)

She ends up picking up a few of his mannerisms and habits. Like poor conversation skills. (He kinda feels bad about that one)

Their parents definitely track her progress via Marco’s own past and they wouldn’t have minded if he graduated early if this didn’t end up messing up their mile stone map.

All that said Marco does his best to teach her from his own mistakes. Yes she thinks he’s dumb for doing some of that stuff but if talking about it keeps her from doing it he’ll live with it.

Okay, so when she’s still young he knows it’s important for her to learn and to practice walking but she’s just so cute and Coe on who wouldn’t want to hold her?

More than once Angie has had to pry Mariposa off of him.

Raphael doesn’t care. It’s cute AF.

Since Marco’s parents were absent a lot when he was younger (canon based on comics) they’re a lot more attentive with Mariposa and as much as Marco’s happy for his little sister there’s a small drop of bitterness in his stomach knowing he didn’t get that.

As with any good older sibling, the best way to overcome jealousy of the attention is to also give the new sibling lots of attention.

Despite being so young after high school and entering college he makes sure they have time to talk.

She talks to him about her day, what she and her friends did, what he and his friends did, and complaining about school.

Sometimes this is at dinner, sometimes it’s right before bed, sometimes it’s on their devices but they always have a chat.

Despite also being pretty smart, Mariposa tends to struggle getting started on school work and Marco having gone through this is always offering advice and tips.

Mariposa loves riding Nachos and Marco’s ‘safe kid’ reputation comes into play as he convinces their parents that if she’s responsible Nachos is sweet just like any other pet. (And incase of emergencies Mariposa is well equipped to drive her)

Summary: Summer break in Avalon meant tourist season, and there was plenty to draw them in. Some things, however, were as much for the locals as the tourists, and Midsummer Night was one of them.

SUMMER BREAK ON Seven Mile Island was marked by the descending of semi-local tourists flocking to the beaches and boardwalks. People living further inland who were either too cheap or too broke to go make a pilgrimage to one of the Disneytopias would come to partake in sand, limited surf, and the pop-up carnival and craft market booths. Avalon, in particular, saw an upswing in tourism from all sorts of people, from the beachcombers to the walking tours and even a growing number of people who were coming looking for the various magicals who made up nearly half the local population.

Many of the locals even leaned into the draw, using the fascination of humans still getting used to the idea that magicals existed to showcase their innate skills and talents in a fun and benevolent way that also made them a quick buck or six. The boardwalk was filled with artisans of all species, showcasing jewelry or crafts or even games that were part of their cultures and encouraging visitors to try them out or on, to take selfies and share photos, and generally having fun. Several booths along the boardwalk had maps marked with interesting shops or places to eat and drink that tourists could take with them to investigate when they tired of the beach or the weather turned, and those businesses frequently had some sort of special treat or trinket a visitor could get for free if they had one of the maps to show they found their way there from the boardwalk.

Lighthouse CommodiTeas was no different, posting signs to advertise various booths and stalls set up by regular customers or noting which ones donated their proceeds to charity and offering customers who came with maps a complimentary small iced Hellfire Mocha. This summer there were even round sugar cookies decorated with royal icing to show a lighthouse overlooking the boardwalk available for a dollar each with a note describing the wetlands conservation purchasing the cookies funded. The corkboard bulletin board featured notices of scheduled events and their locations, including the air show put on by the local dragon population and the aquabatics demonstration held jointly by the selkie and merfolk pods.

And then there was the Midsummer Night's Dance. It was an event that had barely held any draw for several years before Sam had come to Avalon with his son and taken note of the celebration. Now it was practically the main draw for the area. Specially cordoned off on the beach to avoid disturbing local wildlife, the massive bonfire kept the light levels high well past sunset. Musicians of many stripes took a turn to play a tune or six for the dancers who took to the sand spinning and twirling, leaping and laughing, rejoicing in the height of Summer's glory.

Cas and Jimmy stayed close by Sam's side the whole night, trading off dancing with their lover around the bonfire. Despite his still healing side, Sam seemed to have endless energy for the dance, never flagging even when his partners needed to trade off. Neither of them bothered to ask about breaks, instead bringing small sandwiches to him when they traded off to help keep his energy up whenever they swapped and using their own breaks to refuel and hydrate.

"It's the only time I'm willing to take the early shift to open the cafe," Charlie informed Jimmy when she took a break herself around ten at night. "This'll last until dawn and the boss won't leave before it does. Too important."

"I'm surprised there aren't more faeries here, honestly," Jimmy admitted, glancing around at the crowds of swirling bodies. Certainly both Balt and Meg were there, and Gabriel, and several dozen others of varying species, but as far as he could tell Sam was the only faerie present.

"Well, yeah, this is his territory," Charlie said with a shrug. "And he's of the Summer Court, so this is a bigger deal for him than it would be for someone of one of the other Seelie Courts. Anyone of the fae coming to what's essentially his revel would be expected to pay a tithe to Sam in order to partake. Most faeries would rather host their own and claim all the power drawn from the dance for themselves than..."

"Than pay a tithe to the Steel Prince?" Jimmy finished dryly. Sadly, it made sense in terms of the social order of the fae and how bigoted many of the full-blooded fae were about a half-human, even one raised in the Seelie Courts.

"Eeyup," Charlie agreed, popping the 'p'. "During previous years, Dean would show up and bring booze, but he's got the whole 'apologize and mean it or fuck off' curse hanging over him so it's debatable whether he tried starting up his own or went back to the fae realms with Mary and Adam for Midsummer."

"He can't," Jack piped up, wriggling out of his skin and draping it across his lap before accepting a cup of juice from Jimmy. "Dean won't leave Baby behind, and she can't go into the fae realms. Too much iron still in her chassis, and manufacturing replacement parts without iron but still being strong enough to hold up under driving is taking a while to get actual engineers on board with."

"You'd think he'd have approached the stock car racers about it already," Charlie said with a shake of her head. "Get an all faerie racing team together or something."

"Not enough interest yet, probably," Jimmy said. "At least on the part of the faeries. And you know there'd be noises made from a certain sector about copyright infringement."

"Boo," Charlie huffed. "It's a real life adaption, it shouldn't count!"

"Give it a few more years," Jimmy suggested. "And excuse me, I believe it's my turn to twirl."

He got up and grabbed a chicken salad sandwich, then headed back into the fray. He timed it just right, spinning in as Cas spun out and almost seamlessly taking his twin's place in the dance with only the amused glint in Sam's eyes to show he knew they had switched.

He laughed when Jimmy held up the bite-sized sandwich. "You two are going to spoil me, you know!"

"Are you saying you'd rather we not bring you snacks during next year's dance?" Jimmy asked in feigned dismay, pretending not to see the flash of heat that went through Sam's expression.

"It is something of an endurance event," Sam pointed out, an odd note to his voice that Jimmy thought might have been apology. "Usually more than any human can handle keeping up with."

"Good thing you have two of us," Jimmy teased, and laughed when Sam nipped at his fingertips as he ate the sandwich from his hand.

Okay, so here's a little fun fact for the A Mingling of Magics readers out there: I gave Merlin (and subsequently Miles) a birthdate of somewhere around midsummer (June 21)

My reasoning was, hey, summer solstice, longest day of the year, what better birthdate for Merlin? It's meant to be a time of great magic and light.

But then I recently learned about cusps in Western astrology and guess what?

Midsummer birthdays fall within what's called the Cusp of Magic between Gemini and Cancer.

Qualities of a Cusp of Magic birth include: Curiosity, sentimentality, energetic, sociability, empathy, good communicator and listener.

And these are vague enough to be applicable to a lot of people, I know, but then there's this little paragraph:

You're easy-breezy on the outside, but inside you might be a ball of tension. You absorb the feelings of others and are quite sensitive yourself. You have a hard time trusting people, so you encourage others to talk about themselves or engage in lighthearted conversation to avoid talking about your own inner issues. 

And like?? Oh my god?? That fits Merlin so damn well it's scary! So future fic writers, if you wanted to give Merlin a birthdate, consider June 17-23.

History

Dante was never destined to be a Texan. As the youngest of five boys, Dante spent his formative years receiving hand me downs in the form of expectations and life lessons learned through sibling torment. It became clear to his parents at a young age that Dante wasn’t going to follow in the footsteps of his brothers. He wasn’t a natural at football, he had no desire to join the Army, and it was becoming alarmingly clear he wouldn’t knock up his high school sweetheart either.

And Dante had no desire to.

Despite the pigeonhole and constant fights his family tried to keep him in he did what he could to avoid opening up the conversation that would inevitably end in arguments that Dante didn’t want to have. He didn’t hide who he was but that didn’t mean he ever addressed their sneaking suspicions, or looked to have any “coming out” experience with his family. He kept to himself, turning to the internet and the friends he found online, opening up there more than he ever did to someone in Bammel, TX. His bags were packed after graduation and he set out for greener pastures. The world opened up for Dante as he bopped from big city to big city doing everything he could to distance himself from where he grew up. Making friends wasn’t a problem for Dante when he surrounded himself with the right people and was able to experience everything Bammel could’ve never offered.

A life seeking out all the world had to offer became an overindulgence, and an unsustainable lifestyle for Dante. He lived month to month scraping by on what odd jobs he held down and the generosity of friends he acquired, which led to Dante getting tangled up in people he shouldn’t have on multiple occasions. After a particularly bad breakup with a FWB Dante found himself in Avalon. It was sleepy in comparison to the other homes he’d found for himself, and Dante had every intention to only stick around for a summer.

What was supposed to be a three month stay in Avalon quickly turned into two years as Dante formed a new home base in the coastal town. His love for a good time and spending an entire paycheck on a night out no longer was his entire existence nor did he spend all his time in his room holed up on the internet. In Avalon, Dante was able to seek out his equilibrium. He opened himself up to activities he’d been closed minded to in the past. He took up crocheting (something he never even thought of trying back in Texas) and developed an appreciation for the arts. Although he is discovering himself, Dante is beginning to realize he will always be discovering something new. He doesn’t know if he’ll stay in Avalon forever, but is content here for now, and is embracing life in a new way that isn’t an “all or nothing” mindset.

Headcanons

Dante’s the youngest of five boys. He doesn’t keep in contact with any of his brothers or his father but occasionally gives his mother a call. He’s never come out to his family and doesn’t plan to. It’s easier they just assume whatever they assume. 

Dante doesn’t speak in a southern accent and is very cognizant of the way he speaks. There’s a few words he slips up on but the only time it really comes out is when he’s exhausted or intoxicated.

Dante’s nearsighted and is usually wearing his glasses when he isn’t at home (or hasn’t misplaced them).

Allergic to latex (learned the hard way).

Eats more red meat than he’d like to admit.

Makes his bed only when he knows he’s having company over.

Is the noisy neighbor and is constantly playing music any time he’s home.

Voted most likely to leave town in high school (which he did immediately after graduating).

Took up crochet when he moved to Avalon. He's gotten pretty good at it and has a hoard of yarn slowly taking over his room.

DMC OC Week 2023: Day 7 - Free Day

So last year for Roman, I decided to share the brief "chapter" I'd written for the start of Roman's "story" and basically Dante and Roman seeing each other for the first time.

I have a similar thing for Vigilex, but it's not him meeting Roman or Dante and anyone like that for the first time. I've hinted to it at lot, but it's him meeting Avalon for the first time.

Vigilex: Mimicry is the Greatest Form of Flattery

Footsteps crunched over shattered glass and crumbling wood. A cigarette was effortlessly flicked to the floor.

Pathetic. He thought. How some people are so effortlessly manipulated by demons.

He crouched on the floor and brushed aside some of the rubble, revealing a book. Scripture of some kind, he’d recognise that kind of aloof, high and mighty talk anywhere.

Avalon carefully examined his surroundings. A building, once high and mighty, crumbling and falling apart. A home at some point, given the half burnt pictures of smiling parents and children. Yet to be even touched by the repair efforts, one would only have to assume the previous occupants were still thought to be alive somewhere, perhaps it was their words volunteers were waiting on before properly burning this place to the ground. 

Claw marks scratched the ground warning of unwanted guests. Though, Avalon didn’t worry. The marks here were from years long past, just a message to the future now to never trust a scale hand, no matter how inviting it may be.

A tile fell from a hole in the roof through an open hole in both above floors. Avalon reflexively but calmly reached for the holstered pistol under his coat, but with a quick glance around the room, he recognised that he was indeed, still alone. He stood up, commanding the empty floor once again. It looked a lot more spacious with most of the furniture in pieces and all but the load bearing walls crumbling into dust.

He turned around to face his exit and collect himself.

How could this all have so easily happened? It truly goes to show what complete isolation will do to humanity. We cannot so easily lock ourselves away with our fantasies of something from the depths of hell coming to save us. Whoever this Sparda was, he was a trickster, a con artist, and a disgusting demon. Just another creature from the depths of that wicked place for me to crush underneath my boots when we rise up and claim this plane for ourselves once more.

It was then that the crack of wood broke him from his thoughts.

Avalon spun around to face whatever had interrupted him. A pair of marigold yellow eyes met him in the shadows. Though he wasn’t showing it, it was surprising to have to look up to meet the creature's gaze. His hands fell to the dagger and pistol at his side as he fully turned around.

The creature began to approach him. Metal high heels piercing through the shadow first, followed by an eerie smile. The thing must have been at least six feet tall. Navy blue, burgundy, and lavender armour of leather and metal covered the thing as it stood biped, a spade-tipped tail swinging behind it. Coffee hair topped its head and hung behind it as two latte-coloured bone horns curved around its skull. It stopped once it was fully out of the shadow.

Avalon snapped out of his analysing gaze and immediately drew his gun. He knew a resident of the infernal hells when he saw it.

“State thine name and business before you get blown back to where you belong!” He shouted with all the authority a lone warrior could muster.

“Worry not my brother,” the creature stopped, straightening its back and raising its hands playfully. “I mean thee no harm.”

“Don’t you dare mock my tone!” He stood strong, gun still trained on the thing’s head. “Do not attempt to test me, demon!”

“Please calm down,” the thing said, its tone still miles calmer than relaxed, “I promise I come here with only willingness to trade.”

He quickly fixed his aim and fired a warning shot into the thing’s shoulder, punching a clean hole straight through it. Too clean in fact. A perfect circular hole. Barely even the armour seemed to put up any resistance.

“State thine name and intentions quickly, fowl beast, or the next shot will be your head.”

“You have made your wishes loud and clear my guy, allow me to waste no further time in-”

“Now!”

Tell him what he wants to hear.

“Hybrids, my dude, stain on our legacy as much as it is on yours.”

Avalon paused, how honourable and revolting that a demon and him share a commonality. Such creatures only focused on pride would of course consider humanity beneath them, and mingling with said “cattle” a disgrace to their name.

“I’ve heard amongst the grape vines that you are a man known for… dealing… with such creations.” The thing finished.

“That project was a failure.” He spat his final word, it pained him to think of such dealings. It also concerned him that information had gotten out. What possible “grape vine” could this fowl finder of secrets have used? Who knew how many people it had to torture to gather its information.

“The failures of the past worry me not brother, I only wish to implore your incredible talents to find a select hybrid I require.”

“I am not for hire.”

“It would simply be a side quest for you my brother. Non-mandatory game play requiring you to visit locations already on your journey. Not too far out of the way I can assure you. It is, of course, completely unnecessary to complete this task for me, but any information that you gather about a specific looking hybrid may assist you in your end goal of wiping them all out, brother.”

“Quit referring to me as brother, we are not the same.” Avalon snarled, yet the thing hadn’t even faltered in its smile.

“Will compadre suffice instead?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Comrade it is then.”

Whatever mind games these are, they are not only ineffective, but pathetic.

The creature, still raising its hands, reached into its armour and flung a piece of paper across the room, getting caught in a blank of wood at Avalon’s feet like a thrown playing card. Keeping his gun trained on the thing, he reached down to pick it up. The image showed one individual clothed in a large red coat, orange shirt, black pants and boots, and stark white hair. The kid stood awkwardly, clearly this was a photo they weren’t thrilled to be caught in.

“Does it have a name?” He growled.

“Eques. If they hear that name, they’ll know. They’re…” the thing paused, “an old friend. They most likely think I a dead man.”

“And if I help you find this abomination?”

“Then you can check one more hybrid off of your termination list.” The creature dropped its stupid surfer tone. “I can promise that much.” It dropped its hands too.

Avalon slowly pointed his gun down, fixing his coat over his shoulders. “And how do you suppose I contact you with any information?”

The creature took a couple seconds to answer. “I assume you have a phone.”

Avalon scrunched his nose and pulled out his newest burner phone, an old brick nokia, and waited for the creature to tell him its apparent contact number. He hadn’t heard yet of demons using human technology, but it concerned him greatly.

“You can put it under Vigilex, if you were wondering.”

He wasn’t.

“And what name should I expect the information to be coming from?” It had pulled out its own phone, a sleeker modern model. 

“Avalon.”

It glanced up and down from the screen before finally putting the phone away.

“I do look forward to hearing from you, Avalon.”

Before leaving, Vigilex took one of its fingers and pressed it to its temple, just about its left eyebrow. Like a knife cutting through warm butter, it traced a cut down and across its eye, which itself was left unharmed. It lowered its hand tilted its head, before making its exit. Leaving Avalon alone with his thoughts once more.

How pathetic the demons have become, to have to ask for help to rid these stains from the world.

How pathetic indeed.

This Day in X-Project - November 19

2015: The Hedgehog and The Fox: And now, the truth; A seed of an idea is hatched between Jennie and Clint. Maya texts Xavin to see how they’re doing. Quentin and Lorna have what starts out as a pleasant, deep conversation, but in true Quire fashion, ends up kind of a wreck. X-Men Mission: Riding the Nightmare: Scott alerts the X-Men to a possible emergency and calls them to the briefing room; The X-men arrive on scene and take in the situation - a young girl's mutation has run wild; Dominion and Marvel Girl work to protect the crowd; Dust, Wolverine and Rogue try to reach the girl inside the horse; Nightcrawler and Blink gain some useful intel on the girl; Legion, Cyclops, Bevatron and Firestar attempt to herd Tildie away from the crowds; Wolverine, Rogue and Dust finally manage to reach Tildie; Of course, things won't continue to go that well; Faced with the mobs, one X-man goes too far; There is also the riot police to be dealt with; David e-mails Scott, Kurt, and Jean apologizing for his behavior and asking to be removed from the active roster immediately. Gabriel makes a journal entry asking for soup and drugs.

2021: Lucksnapgiving: Arthur texts Alex and Kyle when he realizes the combined lucksnap has made everything purple. Arthur lets the mansion know that the strange happenings are likely due to the lucksnap he, Felicia, and Wanda accidentally caused when trying to open Avalon. Alani asks that no one enter the mansion library. Nica posts about "Mojoverse" - which has taken over the audio/visual networks in the mansion. Gabe makes an open offer to the mansion's legal residents for his high end alcohol that has opened. Nora comments on the newly airing episodes of "The Shadow" - a show which went off air in the 50s. Alex posts about the amazing sports showing on Mojoverse. Clint brings attention to the terrible SyFy-Mojoverse movies that have expanded beyond anything seen before. Darcy realizes that her fridge will not stay shut. Clint texts Amanda to ask what he can do about Avalon. Terry prepares a feast before her food can turn when her own fridge and freezer refuse to remain closed. Alani texts Darcy to ask if Clint is a Lucksnapgiving portal appearance. Arthur texts Felicia and Wanda about getting drunk. Gabe texts Clint to ask what was up with his disappearing act. Gabe informs the mansion that he does not have a punch bowl so there will be interesting drink vessels. Doug weighs in on the wild TV shows of Mojoverse.

2022: Darcy makes a journal post about the World Cup starting tomorrow and having snacks available in one of the TV rooms for watching same if anyone’s interested.

2023: Artie meets with Alani to work on her ASL, covering a variety of topics to test her skills. Inez prepares an early morning surprise for Darcy, and they get a little tangled up.
