How Could You?
Azriel x Reader fic
Summary: Azriel’s sharp words cut deeper than either of them expected, leaving a silence heavy with unspoken feelings. You walk away, heart aching, while Azriel is left alone with regret he won’t yet let himself address.
Warnings: Angst. Hurt no comfort (for now?). No use of y/n.
Note: As you'll probably realize after reading this, yes indeed, this is my first fic ever. I've been reading- fangirling over- the scarily talented writers on here and just thought to give it a try. So, by all means, lemme know if i should stop trying.😭

He didn't realize what he'd said until it was too late. Until they stood there in utter silence. Until you walked away. Until his very being was telling him to go after you and his shadows had moved to the corners of the room as if disgusted by him.
He hadn't meant it, of course he hadn't meant it. But he'd said it anyways and so he sat, in the kitchen of the House of Wind, with his head in his hands as his mind replayed the moment your face fell. The moment you registered his poisoned words.
It had been a stupid fight to begin with, he realized. You'd ignored his orders of simple observation and instead jumped into battle. Typical. You'd gotten the job done, sure. Yet he couldn't help but panic at the thought of your identity being revealed. You didn't even live in the House of Wind for him to keep an eye on you and your safety. And so, one mistake could cost you your life.
And that scared him more than he'd ever admit.
Yet, for him to shout like that? He'd practically cornered you the minute you'd winnowed back, still battered and bruised from the fight. And he couldn't fathom why he'd lost control like so.
Or that is what he told himself at least.
But he'd been pissed and scared.
Now he'd probably messed up the one good thing in his life.
The one joy.
Tumblr media
It had been 3 days 2 nights 7 hours and 18 minutes since you'd talked to him.
It had been 1 days and around 8 hours, still counting, since you'd even looked at him.
He. was. losing. his. goddamn. mind.
His shadows seemed to be just as revolted by his words as him. They reached out to you constantly, even if you were no where near him.
That was the problem. You didn't want to be around him at all.
Every single time he tried to talk to you, tried to get you to even look at him. You managed to find ways to avoid him.
You weren't even trying to hide that anymore. Everybody knew something was up but nobody dared question what happened considering how Azriel looked like he'd smite the first person who talked to him.
He was distracted constantly these days. He used to always schedule a few hours of doing nothing so that he could talk to you, train you, have lunch with you, go shopping. Whatever your heart desired.
Now? Now he'd spend those hours training, to get you off his mind and yet, thoughts of you plagued his every waking moment.
He must've thought of a hundred different scenarios of how he would apologize to you. Hundreds of scenarios, most of which ended with him begging and pleading yet none seemed enough. None seemed worthy of the hurt he'd caused.
Nothing seemed worthy of you.
Tumblr media
You were his spy, of course he'd taught you well. And now you were using his own teachings against him it seemed. You were anywhere he wasn't, and though it hurt you to blatantly avoid him so, it hurt more to know what Azriel really thought of you.
To know that the worst things you thought of yourself were exactly what he thought too.
To know that when he would take care of you after missions, he was probably just coddling you.
And when he would listen to you as you opened up to him, under the stars, in the darkest hours of the night, all he might have been doing was taking pity on you.
To know that you might just have been another project to him. Another thing to fix.
To know that the one person who truly fully knew you, also saw the ugliest parts of you and also considered them as weaknesses.
And so you did the one thing you knew to do best, you hid and you shut down.
You weren't a very quiet person but every time you would come to the House of Wind, which wasn't very often now, the reminder of his words seem to just pull your tongue out, tie it into a tight knot and shove it somewhere deep in your heart.
Because although you were a spy of the Night Court, fierce and unyielding. Though you held up your centuries old carefully crafted facade of the strong fearless faerie, he'd seen through it all and it scared you how much his words seemed to affect you.
How close to heartbreak this felt.

Tell me, Party Girl
Azriel x Reader (Cassian's sister)
Synopsis: Your former party girl title rears it's head again as you try to escape the reality of The House of Winds newest resident, Nesta. Very quickly tension bubbles over between you and the night courts current 365 party girl, leaving Azriel to do what he does best.
Warnings: Angst, Nesta being so rude, mentions of alcoholism, fluffy
A/N: You guys! Hello! I have missed writing for you friends! Sorry for being a lil MIA especially with Azriel fics. Let me know what you guys think of this!
----------------------------------------
Flashes of iridescent technicolour filled the darkened room, the free spirits of the Autumn Court escaping their world's trials and tribulations. Pounding music like nowhere else in the whole of Prythian filled the club scene, as you swirled effortlessly into the centre of the floor. Your hands flowed above your head, the flickers of light passed through your fingers as your head tilted back, lost in the world of the music. Fae bumped into you, with little notice given by you, following their own flow away from their earthly body. The floor of this long-forgotten former base was the scene of many a moment lost and gained to powerful music envied by the rest of Prythian and felt by so few. Unfortunately, as soon as you felt the peace in the vibrations, the heavy boots of Autumn court troops shook the room out of serenity. You snapped from your inner world back to the world of ruined fun, fae ran from every which direction, doing their best to evade capture and wrongful retribution. You followed your own intuition, skillfully avoiding the guards and ducking into the surrounding wood for cover. Your dancing shoes found it difficult to adapt to their new purpose of dashing over thickets of roots to take cover in, sending you crashing into damp dusk moss.
“Need a hand?” You exhaled loudly towards the source of the words, reluctant to look up and find the scolding source. You pushed onto the backs of your legs, the sound of guards circling but unable to see you through the shield you emitted.
“Your power has so much more use than partying YN, if only I could convince you to join my team” A gloved hand reached down, your knees split from the fall, the blood now flowing as you allowed him to pull you up.
“Whatever Az, as if he’d allow me on any of the fun missions. Taking me back to my cell?”
“Do you mean your plush room in a palace? Then yes” he smiled softly, tucking your arm close to him, shadows ran up and down your bare legs attempting to bring some semblance of heat back to them.
“A gilded cage is still a cage” You sighed, a sympathetic smile growing on his face as he dissolved you both into shadow, the sound of the guards finally reaching you both a distant memory, to match the freedom you briefly felt.
The landing to your House of Wind living quarters was as gentle as ever, Azriel in full knowledge of your hatred for winnowing. You threw yourself down on the edge of your bed, your ruined shoes being kicked free.
“Night YN” Azriel smiled as you flattened yourself out of the delicate sheets, eyes fixed on the swirl of stars painted across the ceiling.
“Where’s my keeper?”
“He’s busy getting nowhere with Nesta” he laughed quietly while you uprighted yourself to look towards the Shadowsinger again, a smirk painting your face.
“I enjoy the stress that female puts on my dear brother, it keeps me young and beautiful” You grinned, striding over to sit at your vanity, your fingers pulling stray sticks from your locks.
“You don’t need help with that”
“What?” You turned to question Azriel’s barely audible words but he had already gone, leaving you alone again, the wind reverberating against the towering windows.
-
You sauntered into the long dining room, your footsteps against the stone cutting into the clearly awkward silence between the three other residents of the House of Wind. The legs of the large oak chair scrapped along the worn stone, making Nesta recoil slightly from the other end of the table, Cassian watching her face carefully from the opposite end. Azriel looked grateful to have you sit across from him, anything to end the tension between the two on either side of him.
“So, sent dear Azzie out to fetch me again brother?” or start new tension Azriel thought, your almost bored words dragging Cassian's eyes to you.
“You shouldn’t go to those parties, anything could happen you”
“Yeah like a break from you two...or something interesting” You muttered down to your grapefruit, Azriel’s foot briefly tipping against the top of your toes in a comforting movement so short you couldn’t say it happened for sure.
“They’re all out to stop our freedom YN” Nesta chewed out, a blow clearly directed towards Cassian who threw a glare to her. You didn't hate Nesta per say, sure she kept your brother occupied which allowed you more time to sneak away but you paid the price of having to deal with her tantrums. As well as having to deal with the foul moods she put your brother in.
“I appreciate the support Nesta but with all due respect you’re a traumatised, spendthrift, alcoholic, I just have a control freak for a brother” Azriel nearly choked on the orange segments he ate with bad timing as now both Nesta and Cassian directed their annoyance towards you.  Neither heated glance fazed you, you knew Cassian's weak spots since a child and as for Nesta, she wasn’t yet up to the skill it would take to leave a scratch on you and so there you sat, eating your grapefruit with a smug sense of comfort.
“Takes one to know one” Nesta scoffed towards her breakfast.
“Excuse me?” You bit back, Azriel’s foot gently tapping you again, its reassurance doing little to your escalating anger, a stray shadow now wrapping around your ankle.
“Don’t play all high and mighty, Cassian’s told me all about the whoring party girl you used to be-”
“-Enough Nesta” Azriel spoke with a slow composure that conveyed a level of anger you prayed never to be on the other end of.
“Why!? You’re all allowed to talk about my drinking and fucking!? Why can’t I talk about the original party girl of the group? The female that got so drunk that she slept through Tamlin and his father stealing away Rhysand’s sister? Some lady in waiting you are! Or should I say were?” Venom from Nesta’s tongue stung more than any blow her power could deliver. Your deepest regret, the deepest darkest lowest point of your 500 years on this Earth, thrown at you like it was nothing. You thought about that night often, how you just wanted one night of entire numbing, to not feel the deep scars down your back where your wings once were just once and how you would pay the price of that for centuries after. You screeched the chair along the slate again, standing with escalating anger as Cassian began reprimanding Nesta.
“I hope you never feel an ounce of what I did that night Nesta, I hope you get everything you want in life and it still not be enough” Your voice was an even calmness that came with pure white-hot rage as tears began to brim along your lash line. You met the dining room door quickly, the room descending into a deeper realm of tension than when you had arrived.
“And I also hope you fall down those steps your feeble muscles can’t even bring you down” You added before slamming the door of the dining room, jolting Cassian slightly. Azriel stood from his place, his fingertips pressed into the oak as it pushed back against him.
“Speak to her like that again and I’ll personally help Rhysand kick your sorry ass to the wilderness” Azriel often avoided full eye contact with Nesta and yet this time found himself staring down Lady Death with only rage bubbling through his veins.
You flung your favourite clothes into the rucksack Cassian had carried through his first war. You looked down at its deep indigo colouring, its tattered fabric a reminder of the battles your brother fought for his people, for you.
“YNN?” Azriel called softly from the other side of your door, shadows beginning to leak under the doorframe. You sank into your power, vanishing from visibility as Azriel entered the room slowly. He crossed to your bag and tipped the contents back onto the bed, his shadows curling into him.
“I know you’re here YNN” You didn’t respond to him, his eyes still fixed on your clothing until shadows darted from his side and pinned you against the silver wallpaper of your room.
“Agh! Cheater!” You called back, dissolving the mist of invisibility you had built.
“You know I will always find you, no matter where you run to” He smiled sweetly at you before glancing at the emptied bag of your belongings.
“I know, an annoying characteristic of yours that I love” You laughed, his shadows releasing their hold allowing you to return to pack your bag at Azriel’s side.
“She was being an idiot, you know no one blames you for what happened?” You didn’t reply to his gentle words. For centuries you fought the demon in you blaming you for that night, how you might have stopped it if you hadn’t been licking your wounds. Countless times the Inner circle absolved you of blame, reminded you that regardless you wouldn’t have been able to stop a High Lord and his son, how no one ever for an ounce of time thought you should pay the penance you had set on yourself.
“Cassian is downstairs reprimanding her, pretty sure she’ll be getting the silent treatment for a while” he added.
“That shit probably turns her on”
“So snarky for, what was it? A former party girl whore?” He laughed back at you, your eyes finally returning to his, your own grin forming.
“If the shoe fits” You held up your disregarded pump from last night's antics, Azriel taking it from you, his marred hands dusting off the now-dried peat.
“Well, hopefully, the whore part doesn’t fit you anymore” he looked from the satin fabric forever stained back to you.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” You chuckled, returning your clothing back to the rucksack, his free hand taking hold of yours as it made its way to gather more articles of clothing.
“I would actually, tell me, tell me about the males who try with no success and great success. Tell me so I may hunt them down and destroy them for ever thinking themselves worthy of the moon, a beauty we mere Earth dwellers may only admire from afar. Tell me YN, tell me so I may stop searching every room I enter in hopes I find you there and not wrapped around some other male. Tell me so I can find comfort in the invisibility you are blessed with that I am cursed with. Tell me, party girl, tell me so I can move on from you” Azriel’s words hung in their honesty between you like apples on a tree. Yours to take or yours to leave.
“How-how do you always know where to find me Azriel?” You found yourself asking, your eyes looking from his down to the shoe he held. He would always come for you before you even knew you needed him, always there to your rescue or support. Always there to defend your antics to Cassian when he feared his sister was lost to her old self again. Always there to pull you back before you could meet that old self again. Always there.
“I think you know YN” his voice like smoke and glowing embers, comforting you as it always did, tethering you to him like it always did. Tethering.
“You’re my mate” It came out like a statement, not a question, a statement of something always true but not always obvious to you. Had your gift been obscuring the truth from you or had it been your own selfish ways, it didn't matter, what mattered was-
“Yes, I’m your mate, yours YN but you are free to be anyone else's or no one’s at all, I will not add to the gilded cage” he dropped the shoe, moving to release your hand only to find yours tighten its grip, charged with a quiet intensity that had never been there before. His hand lifted, trembling slightly, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear, last night's make-up probably still smudged in your waterline. The touch lingered, his fingers tracing the curve of your cheek until your eyes fluttered shut as you leaned into the touch, the warmth of his palm soothing every frayed nerve that ever jolted in your body. Azriel leaned in, unable to deny himself any longer, knowing now that you wanted this to. That you wanted him. The kiss was gentle, glowing like a realisation that all you had both ever wanted had always been down the hall from one another. His hand found the back of your neck, pulling you in closer as you reassured him with soft breaths that you wanted this, wanted all of him. Never wanting it to end but also not wanting to suffocate. You separated with somewhat sharp breaths, oxygen flooding your blood again.
“How long did you know Az?”
“The night Spring took our family and I found you passed out at the end of your bed, your back still raw from that sick sick cruelty of our blood-” his hand travelled from your neck down to your shoulderblades, the small mounds of scars pressing into the soft fabric of your shirt “-I lifted you into your bed and just, just stayed watching you all night from your vanity chair, watching your breath and holding my own breath every inhale you took, waiting for the exhale. You used to really scare us YN”
“I know” You ran the back of your hand down his cheek, soaking up the stray tear that leaked from his eyes.
“I-I never admitted this to anyone but I felt-I felt relief finding you there, that-that they didn’t take you too, that they didn’t hurt you like they hurt them” his head dipped in shame, a secret he held since that night. You kissed him sweetly then, pushing away his growing sorrow.
“I’ll admit the same to you, I felt relief when I found out you didn’t accompany Rhysand to Amarantha’s ball like you were supposed to, that she didn’t get you too” You dipped your glance briefly at your admission before Azriel surprised you by smiling.
“Rhysand has terrible friends, one of them is trying to fuck his sister-in-law and two others are glad it's him and not them that the terrible things happen to” You laughed at his obvious parody of your lives. You sat on the bed, the rucksack sinking into the bed beneath your hips, Azriel joining your side.
“Where were you going to run to?” He found his curiosity asking, his shadows swirling lovingly around you.
“There’s this party at this old bunker in Winter Court I was going to check out”
“An old bunker? Are they ever in buildings that haven’t been condemned?” he chuckled, his thumb brushing over the back of your hand.
“Not any good ones” you returned the laugh.
“Are mates welcome?”
“I don’t know does the whole mate thing really go with the party girl whore image I apparently projected”
“Maybe that's okay too” he smiled, your head leaning into his shoulder.
“I think so too”

A Road Well Traveled (Azriel x Reader)
Part 2
Word Count: 1377 Warnings: Mild language, slight violence Part 1 Part 3
Tumblr media
Azriel turns his gaze towards Mor as she appears around the corner, his hand still holding yours, grounding you in the present moment. You watch as Mor's gasp fills the air, her eyes widening in surprise. Azriel can sense your nervous energy, your sudden need to flee, but your hand remains tightly held in his as if to say, you’re not going anywhere. Not again.
You let out a nervous chuckle, meeting Mor's brown eyes. "Hey, Mor," you greet softly, waiting to see your friend's next move. Mor stands frozen in place, her eyes wide with surprise as she gazes at you. But a moment later, she lunges forward, her arms encircling you in a fierce hug. "Is it really you?" She exclaims, her voice filled with relief and joy.
You release a held breath, letting go of Azriel's hand to wrap your own arms around the taller female, letting yourself feel the sweet relief of your friend's happiness at your return. Mor clings to you, her grip tight and possessive. "Where have you been?" she demands, her voice muffled against your shoulder. Mor pulls back slightly, her wide-eyed gaze roaming over your face, as if afraid you’d disappear if she looked away.
You smile sheepishly, pleasantly surprised that the sharp sting of jealousy from Mor's beauty never comes. "I've been traveling. Seen my fair share of the world now," the half lie comes out easier than expected. It was true enough, having seen breathtaking scenes that you could never hope to master in your sketchbook.
Mor leans back further, her hands still holding your shoulders as she studies your face, her gaze narrowing slightly. "Traveling, huh?" she muses, a hint of suspicion in her voice. But despite her questioning look, she grins, her earlier disbelief replaced with a glimmer of excitement. "You have to tell me all about it. Come on," she urges, grabbing your hand and tugging you towards the dining room.
You stammer, not getting a word in as you’re dragged along, Azriel trailing behind you as Mor leads you into the dining room. Six pairs of eyes land on you the moment your feet enter the room, and you’re sure you’ve stopped breathing entirely.
Cassian, Rhysand, and several unknown strangers' eyes all widen in surprise at your sudden appearance in the room, their expressions varying from shock to joy. For a brief moment, the room is eerily silent, only the crackling fire in the hearth providing noise.
Finally, Rhysand stands from his seat, his gaze taking in your form. "Well, I'll be damned," he breathes out, a stunned smile playing on his lips.
You slowly smile back, taking in his healthy appearance. You had left before he had been trapped Under the Mountain, the word of the Night Court's fearsome High Lord reached you. Stories of the war with Hybern followed not too long after. Standing before you now though, he looked good. Happy. A gorgeous female had been seated next to him, her curious blue eyes assessing you. That must be Feyre. You dip your head towards your High Lord. "Rhys. Happiness suits you, friend," you meet his violet gaze, smiling sincerely.
Rhysand's lips twist into a cocky smirk in response to your greeting, his eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. He gestures to the female beside him, saying, "Allow me to introduce my mate, Feyre."
Feyre, who had been quietly observing the interaction, smiles warmly and offers a polite nod in greeting. "It's nice to meet you," she says softly, her voice warm and gentle, a contrast to Rhysand's rough yet charming demeanor.
"Pleasure is mine, my High Lady," you bow your head, giving her the respect she rightly deserved from all you’ve heard. The reason why Prythian had been set free. Feyre's eyes soften at the gesture, a small smile playing on her lips. "Please, there's no need to be so formal," she says gently, her voice carrying a note of warmth.
Cassian snorts from his seat closest to Rhysand, his gaze roaming over you before settling on your face. "Formal? From the female who disappeared without a word for years. No letter, no sign, nothing. Sounds pretty informal to me."
Your smile fades as you meet Cassian's narrowed eyes. You hadn't expected him to be the one to hold a grudge against you. Though you couldn't blame him. "Cass," you greet softly, wary eyes holding his gaze.
Cassian crosses his arms, his eyes narrowing as he studies you, a mixture of emotions flickering across his face. "Don't 'Cass' me. Where have you been, you little shadow of a fae?" he demands, his voice gruff and tinged with annoyance.
Rhysand and Feyre exchange a glance, noticing the tension between you and Cassian. Even Azriel remains motionless, his gaze fixed on the interaction. The female next to him, you assumed Nesta, grabbed her wine glass and sipped with a hint of excitement. Amren watched from the other end of the table, not having said a word since you’ve entered.
"I've been around," you say carefully, lifting your head up. No matter how upset he was with you, he was one of your closest friends beside Azriel. He'd come around, you were sure of it. They all would. They’d understand.
Cassian huffs, his arms crossing over his chest. "Around, huh? Nice vague answer, really helps explain the past few years," he retorts, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Rhysand watches them both, a knowing look in his eyes. He glances at Azriel, noticing how his shadows seem to hover protectively around your form, silently offering support. Mor promptly picks up her wine glass, knowing the inevitable outcome.
"Don't think I still can't land you on your ass, Cassian," you say firmly, familiar power reeling up inside you. You had trained with them at a young age, knowing how to hold your own was an understatement. You had knocked each of the males around the table down a peg or two through the centuries. You had no problem doing it again.
Cassian's eyes narrow dangerously, his mouth pulling into a snarl at your comment. He leans forward, the gleam of challenge in his eyes. "Oh, really? You think you can still take me on, after all this time? After 76 years!?" he mocks, his gaze flicking to your curled fist.
You gave in to Cassian's provoking, leaning forward as your eyes lit up with that fury you kept such a tight leash on. "I can take you on with twice as much ease." The deadly seriousness in which you spoke heated the room. A strange darkness seemed to have settled over you, leeching throughout the room. Everyone felt the subtle twitch of fury spiking in their own bodies. Rhysand narrowed his eyes, but said nothing.
Cassian's smirk widened, his eyes glinting with excitement at your response. "Oh, really? You think you can beat me?" he taunted, his hand gripping the back of the chair tightly as he slowly stood. The others in the room remained silent, their gazes moving between you and Cassian, anticipating a potential sparring match. Feyre glanced at Mor and Amren, deciding to pick up her own wine glass, just in case.
You moved across the room in a blink of an eye, landing a solid blow upon his chest. His feet lift from the ground, before he's falling through the air and landing on his ass. You look down at him, the feral energy you’ve kept at bay for so long wrapping around you, making it hard to breathe as you narrow your fierce eyes.
Cassian hits the ground hard, a surprised grunt escaping him as he lands on his ass. He stares up at you, a mixture of shock and awe replacing the earlier annoyance and anger. A slow grin spreads across his face, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Not too bad," he says, pushing himself off the ground and dusting himself off. "I guess some things don't change." Rhysand and the others watch the interaction, their expressions ranging from surprise to amusement.
You blink, the power fading from your limbs just as quickly and you step away, looking nervous. "I'm sorry, Cass. I really am," you say softly. Maybe you shouldn’t have come back. You’re not ready.

More dad Azriel? More dad Azriel
Tumblr media
Azriel was frantically walking up and down the hall of the winter house. You were giving birth. His beautiful and loving mate, was giving birth to your baby girl. A girl.
"I can't stand it. I need to go back inside right now!" Azriel outreached for the handle of the door but Rhys stopped him.
"You were literally freaking out in there earlier. You almost fainted and Y/N is the one who's giving birth!"
"Of couse I'm freaking out! How am I supposed to stay calm while hearing her screams and trying to wait patiently here as my kid is coming into the world?!" Azriel almost shouted. Cass chuckled behind him and brought a hand on his shoulder.
"Relax brother. Everything's going to be ok. Y/N is so strong and your baby is going to be great."
"Cass is right! Don't overthink right now. Just sit down a little, try to relax and everything will go on smoothly. Madja will make sure that both Y/N and your baby will be fine." Feyre's comforting hand came to rest on Azriel's shoulder.
Azriel felt like calming a little. They're right. You're strong. And courageous. And amazing. He knew you could do it.
Your scream pierced through the walls of the rooms and Azriel shoot up from his seat.
"That's it I'm going in!" His brothers tried to stop him.
"No Azriel wait-" Rhys sentence cut off as another scream could be heard now. More like a wailing. Azriel froze on the spot.
"Oh! She's here!" Elain exclaimed excitedly and everyone had a huge smile on their faces.
"Az? Are you ok? You're just froze-" Nesta watched in shock as Azriel bursted through the door of your room, and closed right in everyone faces. Before anyone could say anything, he opened the door again just to say:
"If anyone dare to come in here right now, you'll deal with heavy consequences. It's me, my mate and our baby now got it? Thank you" He closed it again and he slowly turned around to face you. He sucked in a breath as he took in your tired form. The way you looked so beautiful, made him weak to the knees every time. He went to your side immediately and slowly crunched down to take a better look on you.
"Sweetheart? It's me. I'm here now and I will never leave your side." He planted soft kisses on your hand. You smiled warmly at him and rested your forehead on his.
"She's here" you whispered.
"She's here" Azriel looked astonished at the image in front of him.
Madja walked in with you baby girl in her arms. Your baby. Your beautiful girl.
Azriel inhaled a shaking breath, trying to hold his cry.
"There you go. She's great and healthy. Congratulations you two!" Madja said and she placed your baby girl in your arms. Madja then decided to leave and when she opened the door she came across 7 heads trying to take a look.
"Come on everyone leave the couple alone for now" She said as walked outside. Once the door closed, Azriel and you just enjoyed the moment of looking at your girl.
"Az..."
"She's...oh my- She's amazing, sweetheart. You did it" he looked at you with glassy eyes. "Baby, you did it. You did amazing I'm- I'm so proud of you" he kissed softly and deeply, not being able to contain himself any longer.
A small whine heard, and you and Azriel looked down immediately just to fins your sweet girl staring back at you.
"Hi honey!" You smiled at her and booped her little nose with pointed finger. Azriel looked at the interaction in wonder. How? How could he ever be this lucky to have you and now your beautiful baby in his life?
Azriel stared lovingly at his daughter, not believing she was here with you.
"Hello my beautiful girl." His voice was full of emotion.
"Wanna hold her?" You asked Azriel. He looked a bit hesitant and you knew exactly why.
"Please my love, don't think like that." You took one of his hands and kissed it. That brought even more tears to the shadow singer's eyes.
With slightly shaking hands, he took the small form in his arms, and everything suddenly clicked. Like the missing piece of the puzzle was finally found. Having you and his daughter with him, was the most beautiful and extraordinary gift he could ever receive in his life.
Your daughter stared at Azriel with bright eyes.
"My daughter." Azriel murmured and leaned to kiss her forehead softly and carefully. He then turned to you and gave you one more kiss on your lips.
"Thank you for this gift my love. Thank you for making my life brighter by stepping in. Along with our sweet girl now" He murmured against your lips as he sealed your lips once more, wanting to do it again and again and again.
It was him, you and his daughter. Everything felt right. Everything were perfect.

Part II
I started noticing that I got stared at more than usual whenever I came to visit father. Apparently, he had proudly told everyone who came to be treated that his daughter now studied in the House of the Wind and worked for the High Lord himself. I was happy to see him happy, but at the same time embarrassed when I was in the spotlight of attention.
In my most recent visit, there were only a few patients to take care of, and none to stay the night in the infirmary room. Father cooked a deliciously smelling vegetable soup with mouth watering garlic bread for dinner. We carried the food along with a bottle of homemade wine to the terrace of our building. We did this often, sitting under the magnificent sky of the City of Starlight. It kind of became our ritual after mother died, where after all the eating and drinking, I'd lie down with my head on father's lap like I used to do as a small child, and he narrated stories of her.
Our family history was a bit strange. My father was a proud, handsome descendant of the Illyrians, but my mother had been a high fae from the Summer Court. I've heard that most of my ancestors' pairing is similar to that.
Your mother, she had this alluring green eyes, the colour which you see in the depths of a still pond, never letting go once you are pulled into. I can still see how the soft wind caressed her pinkish hair against her skin. He loved to describe her, and repeated over and over again the story of how they met.
The story of how she died was only told once, and he never repeated it again. When I had been two years old, mother was pregnant with my sister. There was an internal bleeding which didn't stop, and sadly, both mother and child succumbed to it.
According to one of my neighbours, father was completely devastated after her death. He even stopped selling his services for a while. He didn't talk to anyone and sulked alone, which was completely opposite to his usual extrovert nature. I don't remember any of this, though. Even with sadness in his heart, he never forgot that he had a living daughter and my childhood was full of happy memories.
Well, mostly.
That night, he was telling me the story of how he used to paint my mother's toenails with colour when she was pregnant and couldn't do it herself—his personal favourite which I listened to every time like I was hearing it for the first time—when a shadow flew across the starry sky and landed in front of us.
It was Azriel.
I pushed myself into a sitting position, squinting at the cloth wrapped parcel which he held in both hands. When my father stood up to greet him, he extended it forward.
"Greetings, sir. The High Lord and Lady send their compliments," he then turned to me. "Hello, y/n."
I nodded while father conveyed his thanks and accepted the parcel. Azriel was about to leave right then, but father insisted on him having dinner before he did so. He hesitated, his gaze dropping at our empty dining plates and wine bottle, but eventually agreed. They went down the stairs into the warmth of the kitchen and I followed.
Father was already making cheery conversation, and Azriel joined after a while. They knew some mutual fae and some members of the Illyrian clan, and began having an earnest discussion.
Azriel was ushered to sit while I set the table and father heated up the food. He always made extra portions because someone could unexpectedly stopped by for a chat and had to be welcomed with delicious food every time. While Azriel ate and they talked, I silently listened from a chair nearby. I felt the familiar squeezing ache in my chest as I watched them, because I could tell that Azriel was not humouring my father out of mere politeness and genuinely wanted to converse. He was never like that with me in the few months I've spent in the House.
I felt prickling behind my eyes, and I excused myself to my room before it turned into tears. Once underneath my warm covers, I let the tears fall and fell into a tired slumber.
I was jerked back into consciousness when I heard the sound of my bedroom door being opened. My eyes were swollen shut from all the crying and I had to fight to open them a bit and see who came in.
It was father. He sat on the side of my bed and gently caressed my hair, noticing that I was awake.
"Azriel left just now. We talked for a long time."
I closed my eyes and sighed, trying very hard not to cry again. "Hmm."
"Has he hurt you?" He asked, his voice low.
I blinked open my eyes in confusion. "Who?"
"Azriel."
I scoffed and shook my head. "I don't even know him that well to be hurt, papa."
He raised an eyebrow. "That's why you cried yourself to sleep, huh?"
I bit the inside of my cheek, not answering. He knew everything anyway.
He stood up and fetched a cold compress for my eyes. I felt fresh tears threatening to spill, and pushed the compress deeper onto my eyelids.
"Does he have a mate already?"
"No. It doesn't matter. They'll feel the bond towards each other soon, anyway. The High Lady's sister might be the one."
"I see."
He was silent for a while. The swelling eased down and I could open my eyes wider. When the compress wasn't so cold anymore, I put it on the nightstand and wriggled back to a comfortable position. Father gently patted my head in a rhythm to help me sleep.
"You'll find a deserving mate too, don't worry," he whispered. "A heart has to eventually find its home."

“You love him, don’t you?” Azriel’s smooth, deep voice startled you from your thought.
You craned your neck and squinted into the darkness, making out the sapphire siphons adorning his muscular frame. Sucking in a deep breath of the chilled Velaris air, your mouth quirked up in a wistful smile.
“Who?” You asked as casually as you could manage, before training your eyes at the starry horizon just over the balcony of the River House.
The Shadowsinger scoffed softly, growing agitated at the game you played with him. He took a couple steps forward, standing against the rail of the balcony next to you.
“Lucien.” The first time he’s said the Emissary’s name without an undertone of malice.
You swallowed hard, refusing to meet his eyes.
“Yeah,” you admitted quietly, your voice strained and tinny in your own ears. You dipped your head and took in the scene in the garden below. “I love him.”
The massive wedding celebration was underway; Elain Archeron and Lucien Vanserra becoming husband and wife. Your heart felt uncomfortably heavy nestled above your hollow ribs.
Azriel reached out and took your hand in his, and only then we’re you able to tear your sights away from the scene below. Your eyes welled up as you searched Azriel’s hazel eyes as if they contained the remedy to your heart ache. His gaze was the softest you’d ever seen it. It broke you.
Your face crumpled finally, as you knew it would eventually. Fat, salty tears ran down your cheeks as you whimpered painfully- a sound Azriel would never be able to forget.
“I-it hurts, Az. So b-bad…” you hiccuped out, as the Illyrian warrior pulled you into his arms. He held you tightly as you sobbed into his chest. His fingers danced gently across your back, as he whispered soothing words into your ear.
Your sobs subsided slowly, just as the night sky crackled alive with fireworks. The colors exploded in the air, and you slowly lifted your face from Azriel’s chest. His fingers found your chin and he steadied your face, studying every detail. Your red rimmed eyes, wet checks, and quivering lip nearly broke his heart. Your eyes searched his once again, like he had the needle and thread to sew up everything that was broken in you.
The Shadowsinger dipped his head, resting his forehead against yours. Your breath hitched at the contact, and you let your eyes flutter shut. You were consumed by the scent of cedar and night air. You could hear his ragged breathing- could practically feel his heart pounding. It was almost as if you could hear the gears turning in his head- he was unsure of himself for once. Fighting between his head and his heart.
So you made the decision for him.
You tilted your head upwards, pressing your lips against his, cupping his cheek with your fingers. You felt the male melt into your touch, sighing in relief at the contact he’d waited so long for. He pulled you closer, reveling in your sweet kiss.
The two of your remained that way, wrapped up in each other, oblivious to an onlooker from the event below.
Lucien, from the rose garden where he was dancing with his Bride, spotted you and Azriel in your embrace. In that moment, the Emissary felt something in his chest splinter.

~ A voyage come to rest ~
Summary: Y/N returns home after a long voyage outside the borders of Prythian.
Warnings: None
Word count: 688
Tightening her leathers, Y/N made sure to double check her leather bag. Counting up her daggers and medical equipment she smiled slightly to herself as the ship slowly made it ever the closer to land; to Prythina. A high and mighty voice caught her attention as the ship crew quickly sprang into action, adjusting the sails as the wind shifted. It seemed to have gotten stronger the closer they approached land, stronger and more unpredictable. The sea was merciless, it didn’t care for anyone who took to sailing the ocean. It had a soul of its own.
Y/N grabbed the rail with a steady grip as the ship tried weave through the ocean waves. The sun stood high and mighty in the sky, and Y/N didn’t want to spend a second inside the ship. Her tan was prominent and her hair had gotten a bit lighter thanks to the exposure to the sun. Her travel across the sea had made her love the open sea, her heart had opened up for the people she met on her travels. The high lord of the Night Court had sent her out with a small crew to help with upcoming conflicts across the sea.
Their travels entirely depended on the sea and wind. Their departure from Prythian had been as smooth as it could have been, the rest of their voyage had not been kind, and as such their travels had stretched on for longer than predicted, everything had depended on the emotions of the sea and the goddess in the sky. Stormy weathers had keept them ashore for sometimes longer than they had wished. After a full year she would finally be able to rest her eyes on Velaris again, and on her mate.
Upon leaving they had come to an agreement, they would close off their bond so they could solely focus on their own work. The distance between them would consume their energy if they would try to keep a connection. They would only open the bond if one of them were to find themselves in absolut danger.
Her smile widened as she thought of him, her cheeks warmed from not only the sun. She felt like her younger self in that moment, deathly in love with the Shadowsinger, keeping her love for him a secret. Y/N opened up her bond for the first time in a year, she was glad she held onto the railing as a wave of emotion hit her all at once. It was everything Azriel had sent down the bond at the times he had opened it up, hoping for her being there. Pain shot through her chest at the guilt of never opening up the bond once during her voyage. The thought of him always being met with the deathly silence from her side made her chest ache. She took a breath as she called out for him "Azriel, are you there?".
Her heart sang as he tugged harley on the bond that was now open. "Are you hurt? Where are you?'".
"Nearing land, would you be a kind batboy and pick up your maiden from the ship?’"
A loud and cheerful laugh could be felt through the bond and Y/N smiled as she could envision Azriel in her mind. "On my way, don’t move".
"Where would I go? Into the sea?’"
‘'One never knows, desperation makes one do stupid and reckless things".
Her gaze locked unto the sky and then shifted to look towards land, there she saw Azriel flying with a great speed towards the ship. ’’We got a big seagull incoming crew, better watch your heads’’ Mariza the captain shouted with a smile on her lips as she too had spotted the Shadowsinger.
Azriel came down upon them in a sweep of shadow and wind, he had landed before y/n with a feral smile upon his lips. His smile reached up to his eyes as he locked eyes with her, "Ready to go home my love?"
"I'm home, you are my home Azriel, wherever we may go, you will always be my home".

Wings of Dusk pt. 10
AzrielxReader + HelionxReader
Warnings: abuse. War
I just wanted to thank everyone who's been patient with me. I've had two emergency surgeries and a death in my family so it's taken me second. I appreciate everyone support so much!!
“Cassain! Where is he Rhysand?” You had burst into the camps healing tent. It had been a month since the fight between you and Azriel. A month since you’d been Mated to Helion. Unfortunately for the two of you the wall had fallen the next day and since then there had been battle after battle. You didn’t have time to talk about it or let any one know and right now as you were standing soaked in blood waiting to see if Cassain was ok it was the furthest thing from your mind.
“He’s going to be ok Y/n’ it was then that Rhysand had actually looked at you. Soaked in blood your white leathers had turned crimson red a long time ago. There were bags under your eyes and dried blood in your hair. He didn’t know where the blood stopped and you begun. He knew that you were exhausted. You all were but he had watched you slash your way through half of Hyberns army. Knew that you were pulling more that your fair share of the force on the ground while him and his brothers took to the sky. He had watched you time and time again from the sky jump in front of your men ready to die for every single one of them but here you stood unharmed.
“Y/n you need to rest please” he hoped that you would listen because having you and Feyre out there fighting was too much. He couldn’t afford to loose anyone in his family but he had lost You and Feyre once and couldn’t… wouldn’t do it again. With Feyre he could always feel the bond know in a second if something was wrong. He couldn’t do the same for you at all. He could get Feyre to rest. Could plead with her to fall back and Feyre would always understand respect his worry. With you he couldn’t tell or ask you to do anything. If he told you to pull back you pushed forward. If he said take a break you’d work twice as hard. He didn’t know how to protect you because you wouldn’t let him or anyone.
“I’m fine Rhysand” hearing this Rhys got visibly agitated. His weight shifted from foot to foot. It took real effort on his part not to roll his eyes into the back of his head.
“You are not fine. None of us are fine but you haven’t taken more then 15 mins since the first battle. You need to take a break. I mean seriously y/n when was the last time you slept.?”
Your brother was right you were not fine but to be honest you didn’t know how to be. There was something about war…you couldn’t just sit and do nothing. Couldn’t sleep when you could be training or coming up with battle strategies. You couldn’t do nothing when your family…your men were risking their lives and could be dead any second. This was where everything you’d ever been taught came into play. Where years of insisted perfection paid off. Because anything less then perfection out on that battle field could cost you and somebody else there life. You were prepared to die every time you stepped out of your tent. Ready to give your life for anyone of your soldiers on that field.
“I know your worried about me brother. The same as I’m worried about you. But just as you can’t promise me you will live, I can’t promise you either. However I can keep the promise we made as children.” With that you had told Rhys to update you about Cassain, gave him a hug and exited the tent. You remembered back to that promise Rhys and you had made centuries ago. You remembered that night like it was a week ago.
“Father I think maybe it would be wiser not to involve Rhysand in this war.” You pleaded for your brothers safety to your father. You knew that you were walking a very dangerous line but you had to try. Hell your mother had even requested you to “talk some sense into your father” which of course she didn’t need to do she had asked while you were already on the way to his office. Whenever your family needed something from your father it was always you they would send. Like they knew you were the only one who could be in his presence that he wouldn’t immediately beat. This night was a strangely quiet night at your home.
“Absolutely not Y/n. He is my son he will fight. No matter how insistent you and your mother are.” your father was sitting at his desk he didn't offer you anymore than a glance. You could feel your nerves this kind of defiance was unlike you. Typically your defiance was classier. It could almost go undetected like a faint thread of manipulation hidden under a smile and a logical response. You were calculated in everything that you did...but not that night. That night you had only one rhys life on your mind.
“Of course father, my apologies I just thought that since he’s your next successor then-“ the room was tense, you kept your wings so tightly pressed against your back the pain had started to creep its way up your shoulders.
“Enough Y/N! Your brother will fight and if he can’t survive then it’s due to his own incompetence and failure!” Your fathers word stung. You didn’t know how he could care so much for you and not at all for your brother and sister. It was clear your father didn’t care if Rhys was ready to fight. Or even if he was given a better chance of survival. You could see on your fathers desk that he planned to place Rhysand right on the front lines. It was almost as if your father was trying to get your brother killed.
“At least keep him in the sky with Azriel and Cassian! They fight better together.” the second the words left your mouth you knew it would send him into a rage.
“Y/N you forget your place!” Your fathers voice boomed, He stood from his desk so fast you flinched on instinct. His voice so loud you were sure that it carried down the hall where your family was residing. But you had to continue, it wasn't an option not to make him change his mind. Otherwise your brother would pay the price.
“I’ll fight on the front lines in his place! Just please father.” You spit the words out as fast as you could before your father could throw you out.
“You can’t keep protecting that boy Y/n. One day that protection will cost you your life.”
That day you had left your fathers office with a black eye, a busted lip and a guaranteed death sentence on the front lines. You knew that he would retaliate by your lack of obedience but you couldn’t afford not to fight him. Not when the cost was your brother. For as long as you could remember you always protected your mother, sister, and brother. Had taken lashes, foul words, and their punishment so that they could have some sense of peace. Kept the true price for their safety as secret as you could. Glamoured the marks. Put on the mask of confidence and indifference.
Later that day your brother had come running into your room
“Y/N! I just talked to father and got my assignment and placement in the war effort. Get this he’s keeping me in the sky.. same fleet as Azriel and Cassian! I can’t believe it. Whats your assignment? Did he give you your own fleet to command or are somewhere higher. Maybe commander?” Rhys had ran in so quickly that you almost didn’t have time to glamour your face. But the second you saw the joy on his face all the pain washed away. like it did every single time. How many times had you hid the bruises and scars upon your body for your siblings... you couldn't keep track anymore but every time you saw their faces the pain or thought of telling them disappeared
“Umm I am on the front lines” You mustered every bit of confidence you had to try and calm Rhysands worry. You could tell if wasnt nearly enough as you watched your brother begin to panic and break down.
“What?!? No! Why would he do such a thing. I thought for certain he’d give you something. Of more importance! This is absurd. I’ll go talk to him! HE CANT… He JUST CANT-
“HE CAN. And He did. And YOU! Will not breathe one word of this to him. Do you understand?” You waited for Rhys to reply needed him to tell you he wouldn’t provoke your father further. But Rhys only stood there staring at you. So you walked over to him and grabbed him by the shoulders
“Do you understand Rhysand?” you meant it as a question but it came out more as a demand.
“yes I understand” he answered meekly you sighed a thank you to the Mother.
“Thank you.... And Rhys don’t argue with father. Do as he says and listen to his every command. Especially on that battle field.” Rhys only laughed and rolled his eye at your comment.
“Pfft come on Y/n, I know, I know.” Your brother laughed like you weren’t being serious. Like it was something you warned him of everyday. Which he wasn’t wrong but your father wouldn’t be as “forgiving” with Rhys now. He would actually expect Rhysand to perform otherwise it was his reputation that was put at risk.
“I’m serious Rhysand. Do not provoke him. Do not give him any reason to reprimand you. You need to be training everyday and not just till you’re tired like you do now. You need to practice until you’re perfect. He will expect you to be the epitome of perfection and wrath on the battle field.”
“Please I’m not you y/n he couldn’t give two shits about how I perform. I’ve worked my ass off trying to prove I could be worth his Time but no matter how “perfect” I perform, it all about you.” Rhysands words came with a bite. Underlined with jealousy. You wished your father cared for Rhys and your sister....more than anything. But if your ability to protect them meant they had to stay out of his eyesight you would fill this roll everytime.
“I won’t be around forever to protect you from him Rhys. This time he put me in the grunt position and you in the high seat. He’s not expecting me not to embarrass him. I’m expected to be dead before that fight begins. You will be the one who will have to be perfect for him because any weakness in you will make him look bad. You’re his trophy now not me. You will have to protect our sister and mother from him once I’m gone. DO NOT PROVOKE HIM ANYMORE. No more running out with Cassian and Az acting like children. He will take notice and I won’t be there to distract him.” You had never been so serious with Rhys before. Had never spoken to him with such aggression and demand for him to understand. But you needed him to understand because you could not protect him once you were gone. You had shielded him from this for a long as you could.
Rhys didn’t know what to do. He was shocked and scared. Like for the first time he got a glimpse of the pressure and weight that laid on your shoulders. Never thought about how much exactly you shielded him and your sister from. He knew that many times you were the difference between being beat and being sent to his room but had you given more for his protection then he thought? All of these things ran through his mind but what he couldn’t get over was how easily you had admitted you were going to die. How that was the last thing on your mind. But it was the biggest on his mind
“Do you really believe your going to die” Rhys tried to say without shedding a tear but it was clear that he was about to become a mess.
“Oh Rhys I- I will always be honest with you when you ask me something you know that….the truth is that it’s very likely almost impossible not to on the front line.”
“You can’t die out there y/n. Promise me you won’t die out there.” Rhysands voice cracked and tears streamed down his face.
“Rhys I can’t promise you that.” You couldn’t promise him you’d survive so you did the only thing you could do. you held him and for a while the two of you didn’t say anything. Accepting that the each of you could die very soon.
“I can’t promise you I’ll live. But I do promise that I will die fighting to stay alive for you. Can you promise me the same?
“I can. I promise y/n.” And just like that a tattoo formed on your body right behind your ear with a matching tattoo behind Rhys ear.
To this day it was the only tattoo on your body. You didn’t believe in promises did everything you could to avoid them actually but it was a promise that kept you and Rhys connected. A promise that reminded you of how your relationship with your brother used to be. How he used to look up to you and trusted you…. Now you were last person he’d trust to do his laundry. Just another hurdle in his life as High Lord.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~{+}~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Again! I want it perfect this time!” It had been 3 weeks since Cassian was injured and thank the Mother he was back on his feet. Rhysand had asked you to lead a fleet of rejected Illyrians. Illyrians who had failed miserably every step of their training.
“Y/n please if anyone could make them capable fighters in this short amount of time. It’s you. I’d ask Cassian but he’s healing right now.”
“Rhysand I’m already leading a fleet of day soldiers. Also their Illyrians and I don’t know if you’ve noticed I’m a female…they won’t listen to me.”
“Then make them.”
And that is how you had ended up here. With Day soldiers and Illyrians at each others throats. The Illyrians had actually improved impressively since the first week. You were quick to put them in their place and after three weeks of hard non stop training some of them had even come to respect you. Others were still learning that it was possible a female could run laps around them. On the other hand the Day soldiers were continued to give you an impressive amount of respect and obedience they were more skilled then most of the Illyrians but that was only because they had been training with you longer. But the respect and courteousness of Day combined with the Arrogance and disrespect of the Illyrians didn’t mix well. It led to unnecessary tension you would have to fix. At any moment another battle could arise and they would have to fight with each without trying to kill the other. You had been stuck in your own thoughts when you spotted Helion outside your tent.
“Kemal and Theo grab a weapon and step into the ring Everyone else work on your blocks and dodges.” Kemal had been the Illyrian who had improved the most while Theo was your best soldier from Day. You were truly curious to see who would best who. But you had business to attend to first.
“When I get back everything better be in order or we aren’t breaking for dinner till breakfast” you said as you walked into your tent with Helion following.
“Helion… what do I owe the pleasure?”
“What I can’t come see my mate without a reason” Helion teased while placing a kiss on my temple. You simply laughed.
“I suppose you don’t. However my mate typically does have a reason.” You and Helion had decided not to accept the bond until after the war and to keep the bond a secret until after as well. But you two would undoubtedly accept it the second the war was over. The two of you had found solice and joy in each other in such an awful time. With flirty remarks and touches you kept each other fae while the world threatened to make monsters out of you.
“Ok fine you got me I’m checking in to see how your troops progress is going.”
Helion had taken a seat on your cot and you had found your self standing between his legs running your hands through his hair.
“They are progressing well. I’m no longer worried about the Illyrians fighting they improved however now I worry about the tension between the two groups.” You whispered and could feel Helion relax under your touch
“I don’t understand why your brother gave you them in the first place. You have far exceeded enough favors for him. He cant just keep expecting you to jump to his every whim. What will he do when you become my High Lady? Continue to treat you like your less than-“
“High lady?” You didn’t know why his words had shocked you so much it hadn’t even occurred to you that you’d become a High Lords mate. It wasn’t that you hadn’t expected Helion to treat you as an equal it was more that you had given up those foolish dreams long ago.
“Oh Y/n sorry I didn’t mean to assume you’d court me after I just had thought we were on the same page.”
“No-no Hel that’s not what I meant we are on the same page. I just I don’t know. Hadn’t thought about what my title would be.”
“Did you expect to be anything less? You are my mate. My equal and your brother started something of importance I intend to uphold.”
“Oh Hel I lo-“
“Y/N! I need you now!” Rhysand had come running into the room so fast I had withdrawn my weapon from the sheer shock of it. Helion had instinctively stepped in front of you
“Rhysand you cannot just storm into my tent and demand I go with you.”
“It’s Azriel” that’s all he had to say and you were as serious as could be and running out of your tent without thought. Leaving Helion and rushing to Az.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~{*}~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Y/N thank the mother your here….it’s his wings y/n we need your help.” Cassian looked like more of an emotional reck then Rhys. You could feel the pit of worry growing to a disastrous size. You had no idea what to expect.
“Ahhhhhh, STOP, AHHHHH” you could hear Azriels screams from outside the door. You felt like you were going to be sick like everything in you depended on him surviving.
“Y/N! You need to get in there.” Both Cassian and Rhys stated. They looked like the two little boys you remember making food for. For a split second they mirrored their younger selves coming and pleading to you to make all their problems disappear. But as much as you wanted to make their sorrow go away your feet wouldn't budge. You had no control over your body.
“What?!? I can’t go in there. No I….I can’t.” You couldn’t go in there and see the shape he was in, you would break down the second you saw him.
“Y/N you have to. You’ve studied wings and repairs and clipping reversals for centuries. You studied under Madja. Y/N I’ve seen you save hundreds of wings and Madja needs your help and another person skilled enough to heal his wings so he can still fly after.” Everything they said made sense. It was all logical and you knew that. But it didn’t change that your feet were glued where they were. You indeed had studied under Madja. After you lost your wings you were obsessed with finding a way to reattach them it drove you mad. Once you realized it was just an impossible obsession. Your motivation for the knowledge changed to finding a way to heal or reverse clippings for all those poor girls. Even Illyrian soldiers who’d been injured in the war. You had secretly set up a safe haven for girls who needed immediate help in the mountains. You couldn’t always save the wings but if you couldn’t you could at least ease the pain they’d feel for the rest of their lives.
You were by no means a better healer than Madja you wouldn’t even say you were a healer. You were just skilled in this one area of study because maybe if there was someone who knew all that you knew your back wouldn’t ache everyday. Madja was the best, a great healer and she had taught you well you had just “specialized” and been able to do more with wings.
“Y/N Madja is asking for you” you heard Rhysand say. You wished, wished that you could pull yourself together right now but everything was foggy and blurring together all you could hear was Azriels cries and with each of them you felt more faint. Everyone was frantic, crying, screaming at you. But you couldn’t pull your self out of this state until
“y/n…I know that you love him. I know he is a very dear friend to you and I know that this cannot be easy. I know that your fear and worry for him is over taking you and that is understandable. But right now he needs you to help him.” Feyre spoke to you softly and with love. You could see her compassion and even her own fear in her eyes. Those eyes got your attention enough to realize the severity of the situation and that time was running out.
“Yes I’m. Im sorry. Thank you” you said as you entered the room that Azriel was in. He was laying on his stomach. Head tossing with his arms hanging of the bed. The first thing you saw was blood. There was so much blood. His wings had cuts , breaks, and tares all over them. It was awful, heartbreaking to see his once strong wings torn and tattered. The next thing you noticed was how much pains he was in. His cries and jerking. How every time he jerked or moved the more blood there was.
“Mother thank you, Y/N I need some help stabilizing him. He won’t calm down and if he doesn’t calm down soon he will have lost to much blood.”
Immediately you started to help Madja try and stop the bleeding. You grabbed a cloth and began to apply pressure to his left wing. You weren’t prepared for the screams and cries that came from him.
“I’m sorry….I’m sorry.” You had whispered under your breath over and over again.
“Y/n! I need you to calm him down” Madja instructed.
I can’t I’ll get Rhys or Cassian they can talk to him and Rhys can help ease his pain.
“No they’ve gone to get more elixirs form my office”
You tried to ask him to calm down but nothing. So finally you went to the head of the bed and crouched down so that the two of you were face to face.
“Az I need you stay still for me.” His face was scrunched up and tears were streaming down his face. You didn’t know what else to do so you went with your gut. You brought one of your hands and cupped his cheek while the other grabbed his hand and held it.
“It’s going to be ok Azriel. I’m here I’m going to help you. But I need you to calm down for me. I will not stop until I know that you’ll fly again. But I need you to calm down because every time you jerk or thrash you loose more blood.”
“Y/n i…I’m sorr-“
“None of that. None of that matters right now. Right now I need you to know that I have you. And that I’m sorry for what I have to do. Hold onto this bar ok this is going to hurt.” He squeezed your hand and met you eyes once more. It was a glace that told each of you everything you needed to know.
After he had calmed down you, you tied your hair back and instructed Madja.
“Madja we need to reset the bones now if he stands a chance to ever use them again.”
“That will be far to painful without anymore elixir.” Madja responded with a pained look on her face almost like she was praying that Rhys and Cassian would walk through those doors right now.
“I know that. But we have already lost vital time. And too much blood. It we don’t reset them now then that’s it.” You didnt want to be the fae doing this. prayed to the mother that someone could take your place or that he hadnt been hurt in the first place. Something in you called out to him willing him to hold on. Ensuring him you would do everything you could.
“How much time do we have to wait” was her only reply. As you looked at his body laying on the table you knew he didnt have long but you werent sure if you could bring yourself to break his bone with no way of easing his pain.
“We can only wait 5 more minutes but that mean we don’t have a second to make a mistake we will have to be perfect”
“You’re the expert on this Y/n I’ll follow your instruction” you spared one more glance at Azriel and made a decision within yourself.
“5 minutes” and those were the longest 5 minutes of your lifetime. You and Madja spent it packing his open wounds and staring at the door. By the end of the five minutes you were curing the mother that the only thing your power was capable of was destructive. It consumed and snuffed out unlike feyres or rhysands. They could silence pain, help heal and all you could do was expediate death.
“Thats 5 minutes” you stated with zero joy there was no sign of Rhys or Cass and you would of cursed them but just as you were about to break the first bone Cass and Rhys come running into the room with at least Madja whole stock of Elixirs.
“Give it to him now!” You said and broke the first bone and the scream that fell from Azriels mouth broke your heart. But you knew you had no choice but to keep going and with each break another agonizing scream.
“Rhysand! Put him to sleep!” You yelled at Rhysand while breaking and resetting 2 more bones.
“What I thought Madja said-“
“PUT HIM TO SLEEP RHYSAND” it’s wasn’t instruction or a question it was a command and Rhys didn’t dare finish that sentence and quickly put Azriel to sleep.
“Out” was all you said and Madja shoved them out.”
Madja turned and for just a second watched as a tear rolled down your face. How you moved swiftly and precisely. Not making a single mistake completely focused on repairing his wings. You worked and worked until there was no more work to do.
14 long grueling hours of, resetting, packing, bandaging, and more work but after 14 hours you would of gone 32 hours to know for certain he’d fly again. It wasn't until you were done and collapsed that Cassian had come to retrieve you. You were nothing more than a statue exhausted, silent, and covered in Azriels blood. Cassian had brought you to the shower and helped clean the blood off of you. He didn't expect any words to be exchanged he knew that you had shut out any emotion while you were working on him so everything came up once you were done.
Cassain had seen you like this once before when your family had been murdered. Found you curled up outside of your fathers office staring off into a void. Tried to get you to speak but nothing. He stayed with you all night that night just sitting there with you. You had even completly shocked him that moring when rhysand came down the hall and you shot up, pulled yourself together and were the image of perfection. Went right to taking care of Rhys like there was nothing wrong with you to begin with. If Cas hadnt sat with you all night he would of thought their death had no affect on you. It was that morning Cas realized just how much you loved rhys. How much of yourself you hid away to care for him. How much you had given to become the strong, capable and invincible older sister that all of them had known their whole life. Azriel and Cas had found a way to see through the mask throughout the centuries. It took a long time and it was still difficult to see through they had seen all the signs through out years and years of friendship that showed you were just a female with the weight of prythian on her shoulders. Cas didnt think Rhys was ever able to see through the mask. He still treated you like you were unbreakable. You were and always have been his very capable rock of an older sister.
So now Cas knew what was going to happen. Knew that come morning you would go right back to working like Azriel almost dying had never happened. Like having to hear his screams and be the one to keep pulling him back from death was just another tuesday. But for tonight he'd help wash off the blood and force you to stop scrubbing under your nails when there is no more traces of blood so you didnt rub your hands raw. Hold you while you screamed and beat his chest while tears streamed down your face, insisting you were fine. He would hold you all night while you sobbed and found irrational ways to blame yourself. That is exactly what Cas did and the next morning when Rhys came to check in with you he watched as you smiled at your brother and asked him "why wouldn't I be ok brother? He's fine."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~{*}~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Azriel had slept for 5 days. Slowly coming in and out. Any second you had that wasn’t spent teaching was spent next to Azriel, watching his vitals, tending to his wounds , and ensuring the wing bracing hadn’t slipped or moved. Yet the second he awoke you stayed away. You didn’t know what it was that kept you away after he had awoken.
The fear that he didn’t want to see you? That you weren’t ready to forgive him? You didn’t know. Maybe it was that you’d never kept secrets from him and now you were mated and you didn’t know why that made a difference but it did. Was it that you couldn’t trust yourself around him? Or maybe it was simply that Helion had confronted you while he was asleep about the way you felt.
“Y/n I’m not trying to sound jealous or pushing over my line I just want to ensure that you feel nothing for him in that way anymore.”
“Helion you’re joking right? He’s unconscious. I’m simply helping a friend.”
“Y/n this is the first time I’ve talk to you in a week. You have avoided, pushed me off, and ran from me. While your every second is spent here in this tent with him. Rhysand and Madja have assured me and you that he will wake. That he’s fine…..if this is just you worrying for a friend then I entirely understand. However you can’t blame me for being worried. I found out you were my mate the same night you tried to start a relationship with him. I just want to check in with you about where you stand with this bond…..that we want the same thing.
“Helion I- I don’t know what I want the war is all I can think about and then Azriel got hurt. I was concerned for my friend.”
“Ok y/n I understand…. I think it’s best that we pull back a little then. Maybe completely until after the war that just so you have time to think about what you want.”
“Hel that’s not what I meant-“
“Y/n my sweet I am not mad at you. Nothing I have said was against you. You have every right to love whoever and want whatever it is that makes you happy. I’ve just. I’ve loved before and I’ve been stripped of that love. That was one of the hardest things I have been through and I don’t know if I could survive the rejection from my mate if I let myself continue to fall in love with you. Don’t get me wrong I’m already so far deep but I could pull myself out and keep some of my heart. But if don’t pull myself back and I continue to let myself have everything that I want and you were to change your mind it would break me. My heart is yours to have if you want it. All I’m asking is that your sure it’s my heart that you want before we continue.” With that Helion had kissed your forehead and left you outside of the medic tent.
If you had been paying attention you may of caught the pair of eyes from inside that were locked on you and Helion. Maybe of even seen the way Azriel had tried to push him self up to hear the whispered fight the two of you were having.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~{*}~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Y/N” he’s been asking for you.
“I’m not going I have far to much work to do and not enough time.” Rhysand only sighed at you. This is the 5th person who had come to your tent and pleaded with you to see Azriel. First it was Cassain going on and on about how if it weren’t for that one fight you’d be right by his side and instead of him trying to get you to see him, he’d be trying to get you to leave.
When you had told Cassian to fuck off then they sent Mor who described in vivid detail how every time someone walks into the medic tent Azriel is practically breaking his neck to see if it was you. That he is just wrecked with guilt over everything he said. When you had told her you didn’t care she just walked out in disbelief.
Then they had decided to send Feyre…thought maybe because she stopped you from panicking maybe she could convince you to go see him. “Y/n please I know he hurt you. But doesn’t that pale in comparison after almost losing him? I saw you that day you care for him and up until he woke up you were there. Why is it different now that he’s awake?” You had only told Feyre that your decision had been made.
Before they had sent Amren you thought they had given up. Turns out they were just deliberating on who to send. “Girl you need to get your shit together and see the boy.” “No I don’t.” “You need to come see him if I have to watch him mope around like a kicked dog one more day I’m going to kill somebody.” Amren had just stormed out. She gave you the impression that if she had stayed a little longer she would have shared something with you she wasn’t supposed to.
Eventually you found yourself here arguing with your dear brother.
“Y/n you cannot be serious about this. You can’t avoid him forever” Rhysand only pleaded with you.
“I am, I can, and he made it very clear he wanted me to stay away that Is what I’m doing.” You were tired of this. You knew they had watched him say those things to you. Knew what it meant to you. How could they still be insistent you needed to get over it.
“Y/N he didn’t mean-
“I don’t care. I’m not going. I took beatings, I went with Amarantha, I have stayed in your court. Took in your Illyrian troops, saved his wings, and jeopardized a relationship I really cared about by the way, I have sense agreed to seduce Eris about Beron joining this war. What more do you want from me brother? You were broken, could feel all the tape and glue coming apart. Helion had decided to give you space. You couldn’t blame him it was smart and responsible for the both of you. But that left you alone with a troop at each others throat. And friends dying everyday. You just wanted everyone to let you be.
“I want you to go see him.” Was his only reply and you couldn’t believe it or could you? All you were to him was a chess piece to play. Not a sister, not a friend, or a member of his court. Just a pawn to be placed. With that he made his way out of your tent but right before he left you simply replied with what you realized he wanted from you.
“Of course my lord”
What you didn’t expect was for that to make him stop in his tracks and turn around. He stared at you for awhile and you stared back. Neither of you said a word but you could tell he wanted to say 1000 things but not one left his lips.
Rhysand felt guilt overtake him the second the words left your mouth. He knew that all he did was ask more of you. Knew what he sentenced you to under the mountain. A part of him knew he still looked up to you. While the other part only blamed you. For everything. For Mother and your little sister Marjorie. He looked at you and saw the person his father picked every time. He was too busy teaching you how to balance the courts expenses when he bested Cassain the first time. Too busy introducing you to high lords and their sons when he made carynthian. And off instructing you of the do’s and don’ts of war when mother and Marjorie were killed. He had so much bitterness in him but he knew you did everything for him. Held him together and all he did was let his bitterness take over him.
“I’m sorry about Azriel Y/n”
“Why? That may be the one thing that truly isn’t on your shoulder Rhys. He just doesn’t feel for me the way I had him.” The look that Rhysand gave you before leaving almost fooled you. Almost had you believing guilt flashed through his eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~{*}~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You hated coming to Rhys side of the war tents. It always got you into uncomfortable situations with someone. However we were about to head to the human lands for the last battle fortunately you had finally solidified your troops. Day soilders had learned how to loosen up, Illyrians learned some respect and they were actually getting along. The Illyrian almost made a complete 180 with them actually respecting your power. Asking you actual tips to get better had even included you in some of the barrack pranks. They were ready and you could say that you were proud of the work they had accomplished. As you thought you couldn’t help overhearing the argument coming from the medic tent and peeking in.
“I am coming. I’m fighting in that battle.” You could hear Azriel grunting as he got up from his cot.
“You are not” Cassain and Rhys were quick to respond.
“I am”
“You will not Azriel if you fight you will not fly again.” Madja interrupted and you could feel the shift in the room. Saw the way Cassain and Rhysand shared a look and the way Azriel froze.
“I forbid it Az you will stay here and that is final.” Rhysand commanded and exited the tent on the opposite end with cas and madja followings
Maybe you should of left. Maybe you should of stayed and slipped in when you saw that he was still insistent on going but you couldn’t allow that to happen.
“You better get back in that cot” you had said with your back to a supporting post of the tent.
Azriel flew his head to your voice. Like he didn’t believe it. Couldn’t
“Y/n”
“You can’t do what I know you’re about to do Azriel. You will never fly again. Take it from somebody who knows that pain doesn’t go away.”
“I have to. My entire family is fighting today. What would I be if they died while I laid in this tent.”
“It means youre safe and healing properly. It also means the hours of work I did to save those bat wings don’t go wasted.” You joked and you saw tension roll off Azriels shoulders. “Well um anyway I should get going don’t do anything stupid” as you were leaving azriel grabbed your shoulder and spun you around.
“Y/n, please don’t die. I uhhh, I need you to know... ya know about what I said its-
"Azriel. You can tell me after this war.....look you were right I am exactly what my father raised me to be. Which is why i wont die on that field, I have been in war with far worse odds and lived. I was born for times such as this." You were looking at Az but the male staring back at you wasn't someone you had ever met. There was fear and regret swirling behind his golden orbs. Fear you had never seen Azriel have but this fear was new, like if he released his grip from your shoulder his world would come crashing down.
Azriel stood staring at you with no mask to hide behind. He was wracked with terror. You were once again going into a dangerous situation without him. He would have no way of ensuring your safety... no way of knowing youd come back to but the hope he had in his heart. If that hope was the only thing that could bring you back after this war then mother he'd have more hope then there was in all of pryrinthian.
Before you knew what was happening Azriels had craddled your head back and his lips had met yours. This kiss was different than the first. It wasnt full of lust, desire, and hunger. No this kiss was gentle, it was soft and warm something you couldnt help but melt into. His tongue dipped into your mouth you couldnt help the muffled gasp that escaped from you. He smelled of cedar and ash and in this moment it was like the only thing that existed... the only thing that mattered were the two of you. His shadows danced around your two forms and it felt as if you'd been made whole could of sworn that you felt something snap in your chest. As fast as it came it had disapeared and Azriel had pulled away cupped your cheek and pressed his forehead to yours and whispered.
"just come back to me" before you could reply he had winnowed away leaving you flushed with a sense of guilt as you felt Helion tug on the bond.
--------------------------------------{*}-------------------------------------
When you had finally found Mor to winnow you to the human lands it was chaotic. Humans running and some flat out calling you wicked things simply because you tried to help them. After coralling what felt like hundreds of humans it was time to have march into battle with the king of hybern. You couldnt say that you were ready but you could say that youd give everything you had to ensure the people you loved came out of this war.
--------------------------------------{*}-------------------------------------
In the midst of Battle you struggled to breath there was so much blood. It was like you were drowning in it. Hybern Soldiers just kept coming so just you kept slashing them down one by one. When the battle had first started you could see Cassian and Rhys in the skies but blood coated your eyes so that all you could truly see was right in front of you. Your men surrounded you and as you looked to your left and right you could tell they were just as exhausted as you. Every now and then you or Helion would tug on the bond just to give peace of mind that the other was still ok. As time went on you weren’t sure if you’d win this war. It seemed that the Hybern Soldiers just outnumbered you. Many lives were lost and the battle went on. You used every bit of strength and ounce of magic you had. Especially when you heard Nestas scream for Cassian. It was so loud that both you and Cas had whipped your head around and if it had been a second longer both you and Cas would have been dead but you called to the power inside of you and wrapped the starlight around yours and Cassians figure tightly. Pushed up a wall of pure power to protect your men on the battle field. The blast was so strong it brought you to your knees and the scream that left you broke Cassians heart. But he Watched as you fought every second holding the shield and wall against the blast. Honestly after that the war was a blur. The only other thing you remember after that was Rhys.
You could remember right before your brother had died. You magic racing across to Hybern. To tear his very heart out for threatening Rhys. You remember the panic and dread. Your power an inch of hybern when one of his men had tackled you to the ground. And then you felt it the tattoo on your neck glow and disappear. You had sliced the soldiers throat so fast and stood. Had to know if what you felt was true and when you saw Rhys body and Feyre screaming the world went black.
The next thing you knew you were being carried by Helion off of the field. Madja over your body. You were in and out of consciousness. one second there was madja or mor, then Cas and always Hel. But it wasnt until you saw Rhys. You saw your brother and you could feel the smile on your face. Had determined he was there to take you home.
"rhys...' you let out with a shaky breath.
"Y/N thank the mother, Y/n you are going to be ok". You could hear Panic and see tear on your brothers face which confused you. You were ready you just wanted to be with him and here he was telling you no.
"y/n please Im ok. But you have to be ok. Im alive you can come back. COME on Y/N. You promised remember.. You promised me... Y-
you watched in and out how upset rhys was how worked up he was. Saw as Cassian dragged him away and then nothing.
When you finally awoke your family filled you in and just like that you insisted you were fine. Now arguing in your room with Helion who hadn't left your side. went on about how you needed to slow down. to go back home to day and relax.
"I couldn't of lost you Y/N" Helion shared as he let out a sigh.
"Hel Im ok. Its going to be ok." you held him as he cried for awhile until he stood.
"Come back home. I'll know you're safe there. I can even ensure i dont go overboard with overprotecting you." you could see the love shing through Hels eyes. Could feel how much needed you to say yes. To let him care for you flowing through the bond.
"Ok ok... we will pack tomorrow tonight just be with me."
"I love you Y/n"
With that Helion brought you in and kissed you longingly. Like this was what he needed to ground him in your safety.
Poor Azriel couldn't pull his gaze from your bedroom window. Where he stood outside with a bouquet of flowers eye glued to the scene above him. You smiling at Helion, his hands on your hips looking down at you with so much love almost Azriel could feel it. Watched as he placed a kiss on your lips and how you only deepened it. how you leaned into him and flung your arms around his neck. Watched as Helion lifted you up with your lips still attached to one another. And he especially couldn't tear his gaze away when he felt a golden thread snap into view...connecting him to you. Azriel sat atop that mountain with those flowers with his heart breaking long after the lights of your bedroom had gone out.
Is it hot in here all of a sudden?!?
Sharing is Caring
Azriel x Reader
Summary: Request from @reliablyhann : from chapter 3 of ACOSF – "He and his brothers had put a good deal of distance between the stupid youths they'd been – fucking any female who showed interest, often in the same room as each other – and the males they were now."
Warnings: Smut!
Word Count: 2,232
Notes: And last but certainly not least...daddy Azzy's POV 🥵
[Cassian] [Rhysand]
_________________________________________
You rouse from your slumber with a drowsy hum but your eyes shoot open when you hear a debauched moan coming from somewhere behind you. You startle, hand reaching out for the male in bed beside you. Azriel is covering your exposed ear with one hand, trying to muffle the sounds that have woken you anyways.
He has his eyes squeezed shut, and you’d think Azriel was asleep if it weren’t for him biting his lip and teasing his own stiff cock beneath the sheets.
Your mouth goes dry as you watch the gorgeous male next to you, his mouth falling open as he releases a shaky breath and you have to clench your legs together as you’re reminded of earlier in the night when he’d made that exact face, though he’d been a little more vocal at the time.
You’re sure you know exactly what’s happening due to the lewd sounds of muffled moans and skin slapping against skin sounds through the room.
You watch him for a few moments longer, how his half exposed chest heaves with a particularly swift twist of his wrist, his disheveled hair falling across his brow. How generous he was to try and let you sleep while his brothers have all the fun.
Your hand finds his under the sheets and he startles slightly, hazel eyes wide as he turns to look at you. It’s too dark to see but you know he has a light dusting of pink tinting the apples of his cheeks.
Batting his hand away you take over and he chokes on his words, pressing his head harshly into the pillow. The hand still covering your ear slides down, brushing across your cheek before he wraps it around the nape of your neck, pulling you into him for a feverish kiss.
“What’s going on?” you murmur against his lips. The hand that he had on himself caresses your thigh and you spread your legs for him as he rolls up onto his side for a better angle. He trails his fingers across your cunt, smirking at the wetness he finds there – whether it’s from his own seed earlier or your current arousal he doesn’t care – dipping a few fingers inside of you that makes your grip on his cock squeeze and falter.
He groans at the feeling, can’t help himself but to kiss you before he responds, “Take a guess.”
You haven’t gotten a good look at what’s happening behind you and a surge of jealousy shoots through the shadowsinger as you turn to see, his hand gripping your chin in a firm yet gentle hold, forcing you to meet his gaze. You see a flicker of something in those glowing hazel eyes, insecurity maybe, but why should he be? He is the most gorgeous male you’ve ever laid eyes on. Surely he doesn’t think that you’d see his friends and hop into bed with one of them instead?
“Don’t worry,” you speak softly, reassuringly, the sensual lilt to your voice and your fingers trailing down his spine nearly have him trembling over you, “You’re the only brooding Illyrian for me.”
He puffs out a breath of laughter that has your heart jumping in your chest. That smile is like a reward and you need to taste it, stretching up to meet his mouth as Azriel settles over you, moving his fingers inside of you with a bit more intention now.
You hum against his lips, body arching off of the bed into his. It’s hot, every rippling muscle of his pressed up against your skin, his scent consuming your every gasp for air as he circles your clit with precision for the second time tonight.
“Look then,” he rasps when he pulls away in favor of kissing the swallow of your throat. You muse his hair between your fingers, craning your neck back in bliss. “But for every second you’re looking at them is one second longer that you won’t be getting my cock.”
You whine as his lips trail down your body. This male…Gods does he know how to make your body thrum with need.
You don’t even stifle your cry as his tongue dives straight into your cunt, the sound mixing with two other moans in a crescendo of lust. His golden eyes stay locked on yours and it’s nearly too much for a minute; him eating you out like he’d been starved of it for years while his hazel eyes captivate you.
He smirks as he removes his mouth, trailing kisses across your thigh when your eyes shift across the room.
Your lock gazes with Cassian’s powerful form from where he’s kneeling behind the most petite Illyrian female you’ve ever seen. You try to mask your horror at the sight of her taking his enormous cock and Azriel helps because he’s licking a stripe up your cunt, causing your head to melt back into the pillow below you.
“Azriel…please,” you whine, writhing when he parts from you again, trying to urge him forward by tugging lightly on that silky, ink black hair of his. He tuts but doesn’t budge, tracing patterns into the soft skin of your thigh with his tongue.
It’s fucking terrible, being baited like this when you’re so aroused. You feel as though you’re already on edge, with the moans, grunts, and pleasured noises filling the room, the smell of feral lust is overwhelming in itself.
His hand snakes around your throat, tenderly, but there’s a slight firmness to it that has your eyes rolling back into your head as he rises from his between your legs. Azriel hums disapprovingly as he settles against you, grinding his hips against yours, his prick rubbing against your soaked core teasingly.
“You heard what I said, right (Y/N)? I don’t think I need to repeat myself.” His voice is low, reverberating through your bones and you groan weakly, letting the twitch of his fingers around your throat cut off the sound.
You can feel eyes on you as you stare up at the shadowsinger and he can see you weighing your options, a shadow alerting him to the male watching. Check to see who is looking at you only for him to pull away from where he’s still grinding against you, or keep looking up at this beautiful male and have his cock inside of you for the second time tonight.
You don’t dare look away.
“Good girl,” he praises, rewarding you with a kiss that leaves you dizzy for more.
He still takes his time, even though your hands are clawing at his skin, his hips, desperately, and he loves seeing you like this, mewling and begging for his cock.
And maybe it’s because his brothers are in the room, that he feels the need to show you off, what he can do to you. Azriel’s powerful wings spread wide, drawing the attention of the two Illyrians in the beds flanking the other walls as he removes his hand from around your throat and sheaths himself fully inside of you.
The shameless noise you release as he does so coils in his brothers’ guts, hips stuttering to a stop as they watch you take his cock like it’s your lifeline.
Even the females that they’re with react to your sounds. The one Cassian is with clenches around him and he chokes, didn’t think her taut little cunt could get any tighter. And Rhysand’s partner for the night, hand slipping down to rub feverous circles around her own clit, eyes glued to the male that looks like an angel of death.
You don’t give a damn if they’re watching or listening or whatever–all you care about is Azriel as he pounds into you like he was bred for it, the male’s shadows swirling around his wings. It should terrify you, but they only add to your arousal as he uses them to snake across your body, trailing the path his warm hands are making, the cold whisps soothing, goosebumps forming in their wake.
And he could just let his shadows veil the two of you in darkness, he’d done it before, but he likes the game the two of you are playing. How you test him by disobeying and in return he tests you by pausing his antics. It’s hard to force himself to stop but its so fucking fun watching you beg for him.
Hooking his hand beneath your knee, he folds your leg up into your chest so that he can piston into you at a different angle.
You curse with pleasure and Azriel’s there to taste it rolling off of your tongue, mouth hot against yours before he places a rough kiss to your cheek, lips dragging across your jaw to suck a mark there.
You grasp onto him, taking the chance while he’s occupied to sneak a glance at Rhys. He’s so close to his climax already but seeing the look on your face pushes him over the edge. Your fucked out face, lips swollen and glistening with sweat and spit as his brother marrs your neck with his teeth, the squeaks and gasps spilling from your lips so easily for Azriel has the heir coming with a gutteral moan.
Meeting his eyes was a mistake. How could you think that the infamous spymaster wouldn’t notice? His shadows slithering up and curling around his ear, whispering what a naughty little thing you are. His hips halt, fully pressed into you and tears burn your eyes as you release a frustrated cry as the orgasm you’ve been chasing ebbs away.
He pins your squirming body beneath his own when you try to get any sort of friction, his large hands clasped firmly around your own.
Azriel’s eyes are dark as he growls, “I’m beginning to think that you want them to see you, hear you. You’re getting off on it, aren’t you sweetheart?”
And all you can do is whimper, your pleading words escaping from your mouth with ease. You don’t even know what you’re saying, begging for as he watches with intrigue, gaze alight with fire.
“For Mother’s sake just give it to her Az,” Cassian grunts. He’s trying to focus on the female beneath him but your keening pleas are distracting him in the best way.
Azriel only smirks down at you.
His teeth graze over your nipple, soothing it with the flat of his tongue as he takes his time. He’s enjoying the way you’re raking your nails down the tanned skin of his back.
In a desperate attempt to get the male to start moving your fingers slip across the bridge of his extended wings. He shudders beneath your touch and you can feel the muscles of his strong body pull taut. He bucks into you in reaction.
He growls, ripping your hands away from his wings and pinning them up above your head with ease. They tuck up close to his back as Azriel growls low in your ear, a rumble that alerts the other two Illyrians in the room, raising the hair at the napes of their necks. They’re taught not to let anyone touch their wings, one of the most vulnerable parts of their bodies. But why did it feel so good?
He bites at your earlobe as he hums disapprovingly, a warning not to do that again. It’s paired with a shift of his hips that drags a moan from deep in your throat, a silent message to you that you’ll be exploring that more the second you’re alone.
Your hands slip from his, winding around his waist as he begins moving again, finally. He sucks the tear that has slipped from your eye, his own fingers burying in your soft, knotted hair, holding your face so he can kiss you feverishly as he bucks into you with fervor, the phantom feeling of your fingers on his wings spurring him on.
You try to slip a hand between the two of you but he shoves it away, instead his rough hands finding your neglected clit. You gasp into his mouth as he begins working you, the feeling of his cock inside of you and his fingers working you is euphoric.
Cassian groans erotically as he spills into the femle beneath him who comes with a shout of her own. Your body reacts to their noises, squirming with pleasure and you're so close to a climax of your own that you pray Azriel gives it to you.
And he does with a well planned flick of his fingers that has you careening over the edge into pure bliss. Your cunt clenches around his cock, nails biting into his tanned flesh as you release a sound that settles deep into his bones, spilling into you.
He peppers your face with soft pecks as he comes down, finally meeting your lips in a lazy yet passionate kiss, holding you close.
You love it when he’s like this, domineering and demanding in bed, but afterwards he’s as sweet and docile as ever.
“Fuck Az,” Cassian pants, his own chest heaving as he lies back in his bed, female tucked close to his side. “Is it weird that I want some of that action now?”
The room erupts into laughter, Azriel’s hazel eyes glowing as he gazes down at you, body vibrating with amusement.
No, this is only for you.
Say what now?
Part 2 of 'How could you?'
Azriel x f!Reader
Summary: Azriel came with apologies stitched into his silence, but when his gaze met yours, the words slipped away. What he offered instead wasn’t quite what you'd hoped, but for him, it was a tether, a reason to keep you a little closer, a little longer.
Warnings: Swearing, angst, insecurity, kinda crack?, mentions of Irish forms of art, scars? (sorry y'all, still haven't exactly figured how to write warnings yet)
Note: Probably has mistakes but I'm re-using my 'first fic' card again since this is still a part 2 of my first one. thxthx.
part 1 linked here.
Tumblr media
Azriel didn't remember how to stand. Where do his hands go? Behind his back? Too child-like.
In his pockets? Too casual.
Should they dangle? Probably not.
So he just stood there frozen with his hands flailing around unsurely and his wings fighting against twitching as he processed what just happened.
You'd spoken. Albeit uninterestedly, like you wanted nothing to do with him. He'd never heard you sound so- well, dull. He hated that he was the cause of that. It had been a week since he heard you properly. And oh, how he wished he could turn back time.
But he couldn't, so he'd just take a tiny bit of joy from what just happened.
You'd spoken .To him. To him.
He'd been in the kitchen, the place where his suffering first started, boiling tea when you'd walked in and not immediately turned around, instead you'd spoken. To him. Hell, you were even looking at him so he clearly wasn't hallucinating. He hadn't even heard what you'd said, he'd just heard your voice again and his heart had done its best to lurch out of his chest.
"Huh?", he said and immediately cringed at how dumbfounded he sounded.
"I said I'm done with the mission report. It's on your desk." You repeated blandly. The report.. about the mission after which he'd ruined it all. His face fell, once again reminded of what he'd caused.
It seems you recollect it too, for you turned around to leave
"Wait!", he says, slightly too loudly to be anything but desperate.
Shit. The plea had left his throat before he could stop himself. Now what? He hadn't thought this through at all.
You were looking at him, now facing him again, with a brow raised and arms crossed.
He was looking at you, with his hands suspended mid-air and his eyes slightly wide, like a deer caught in headlights.
"I'm- Can we.. talk?", Mother above he needed to get it together. Stop this stuttering.
"About?"
Good question. That's a really good fucking question that he does not know how to answer.
His shadows twirled mid-air as if taunting him, and he knew that if they could speak his tongue, they'd most definitely be doing just that. Infact, they'd probably be cursing him out right about now.
Though they were attached to him, they'd always taken every available opportunity to be next to you, to side with you, to take care of you. Even now, most gravitated in your direction no matter how strongly he held them back.
You must have realized this silence meant he had no goddamn clue what to say to you. He saw it in your eyes and as he anticipated your departure, you stepped forwards and sat at the island, looking at him patiently.
His heart, which happened to still have been doing the Irish jig in his chest, seemed to just about stop and skip multiple beats. Because he had no clue, no clue how you let him be anywhere around you after what he'd said.
How you hadn't yet punched him or tried to in any shape or form. He deserved that at least. What he didn't deserve was this kindness.
But he'd be foolish to refute it, and so he sat down too and he knew what to do.
He'd get you back.
His shadows seemed to nod resolutely.
Tumblr media
A mission. A gods damned mission?!
You'd expected anything but another fucking mission.
Then again, you assume your emotional instability due to the words of an overgrown bat cannot surmount to enough reason to put the court politics on halt.
You thought back to the whole encounter just hours ago as you packed your bags for tomorrow.
When he'd called out to you like that, you'd thought he'd apologize. You would have accepted it, you would have brushed off how hurt you truly had been, you'd definitely have found a way to convince yourself that an apology was enough. That whatever he said next was enough. Instead, he'd said nothing. He'd just stood there awkwardly, and yet you hadn't wanted to leave again. Gods, could you be any more desperate? Probably not.
One last chance. You thought to yourself.
Your mind told you to uphold your dignity and get the fuck out of there while you still had the chance, keep some semblance of self-respect. But a very tiny part of it still fought back and reminded you of all the quiet, beautiful moments you'd had with Azriel. How you'd surely never get any more if you left, but if you stayed? There was a possibility. The very tiny part made good points.
So you'd sat down and watched him patiently, hoping he wouldn't make a fool of you and leave you there. But he'd taken a seat as well, too clumsily, too fast. What was wrong with him? You wondered. You'd never seen him act so... disoriented.
He still didn't say a word. Just stared. It had been a while since you'd allowed yourself to look at him, to not turn around and flee at the sight of him.
He was beautiful, always had been. You couldn't help but give him a once-over. His sharp cheekbones seemed sharper, his hands were gloved. His hands were gloved? Why-
Oh.
Realization dawned on you like a brick on your face. It was winter, you'd massage his hands and relax the tense muscles of the scarred appendages everyday in this cold season. Or else his hands would cramp up. Badly.
How absorbed had you been in your self-pity to forget such a thing?
Cringing, you promised yourself to help him as soon as possible.
You looked up at him again to find him already staring, now catching your expression. You schooled it and looked him in the eyes.
Gods, his eyes.
They were more sunken than usual. Had sleep not been good to him lately? Who were you to talk? You knew you didn't look any better. And was it really bad that it felt good to assume you were the reason for his sleepless nights, like he was for yours? Yes, yes it was.
His shadows curled over his wings, as though peeking at you. Some slithered over the table in soft curves, inching over to you. They were always nice to you, you thought, smiling softly at them as a few wrapped around your wrists on the wood.
You'd wondered how long this whole game of silence would last.
And just as that thought passed your mind, he'd spoken.
And you'd just about had an aneurysm.
Tumblr media
You looked at your stuff, mentally checking your list of essentials. It was a mission to the mountains. Nowhere near the camps, thank the Mother for that. He hadn't told you why it was a two person job and you hadn't asked. He also hadn't told you how long it would take and you hadn't asked. Turns out there's a bunch of stuff you should have asked.
Are your hands okay?
Did you go get Madja's soothing oils?
What kind of crack are you on to think that taking me, of all people, on this mission would ever end very well after what happened?
Who's hosting my funeral if I throw myself off a cliff in the duration of this business trip? Do I get insurance?
You laid down on the bed, content with your preparations. You'd done your best to not let your insecure thoughts plague you during the day but it was the night that was hard these days. Thoughts of inadequacy would rise every single breath you took. Mind would overflow with different interpretations of every interaction with him.
Heart would pace as thoughts of him took over your very being, until the world faded away and the pacing stopped. Until even the sounds of the wind dulled, until the magic in your veins fell into slumber and so did you.
Only to wake to a new day.
A new beginning? A better one?
Flower
Azriel x Reader (Rhysands sister)
Synopsis: You and Azriel are sent deep into the mountains in search of a flower that may save Feyre's life during childbirth but quickly the frenemy status is put to the test as past trials come to a head leaving you to decide between your new sister and the potential love of your life.
Warnings: Fluff,, teasing angst, frenemies, physical fighting, mentions of wing damage/loss, blood, sweetness, silliness, Az calling the reader Kid.
A/N: You voted for it so here it is, my next Azriel fic. I enjoyed writing this, did it kinda quickly so forgive any mistakes and let me know what you think!
P.s I named Rhysand and Readers sister Aruna which means Moon in some languages.
----------------------------------------------------------------
“We’re lost Azriel”
“We’re not, you have no trust in me, this is basic Illyrian training” Azriel pushed an elongated branch from his path, releasing it thoughtlessly to smack you into the chest, a small yelp leaving you.
“Fucking hell!” You swiped the pollen markings it left from your chest, knotting your face into a scowl towards the back of the Spymaster's head.
“Next time duck” he called back, grin-laced words.
“Next time pick someone else to accompany you on your wild goose chases” Your boot sank into the uphill climb, the mud sinking its teeth into the well-worn leather as you fought with your lungs to keep breathing.
“You were chosen for official Night Court duties by an official member of the Night Court government, have a little pride”
“An official Night Court prick more like” You muttered in reply to Azriel’s faux-inflated self-importance. Two days ago you had left Velaris, in pursuit of a special medicinal flower, Madja’s hope to save Feyre from the birth of her child. You had been hiking upwards for what felt like all 48 hours of your journey, your calves practically speaking to you now.
“Do they not cover outdoor pursuit in your healer apprenticeship?” Another branch slapped into from the direction of the Spymaster.
“Do they not cover manners in Windhaven?”
“You’ve known me for centuries, you know they don’t teach manners” He grinned, your sure footing overtaking his position as he held back a thicket of branches for you. You rolled your eyes as you passed him, missing his clear deception. Your foot snagged on a millennia old root system of an ancient tree, sending you finally downwards on your travel to bump along a forgotten path for a few seconds before another primeval tree stopped your course. Azriel shot with his usual agile step down after you.
“I didn’t think you’d fly that far” He laughed down at you, your clothing covered in moss and mulch from your trip.
“This is it, this is where you kill me. This was all a plot, all those centuries as the best pain in the ass culminating in this fake trip, Feyre isn’t even pregnant is she?!” You threw your arm across your forehead in fake dramatics, feining pain as he Azriel rolled his eyes before offering you a hand to pull you up.
“I think if I was going to kill you, I’d have left Cassian to drown you that time we went swimming when we were 40”
“Ah, the last time I went swimming with you fools” You took his hand as he hauled you up, your muscles settling back into their place after their 360. You both continued your hike with some element of hurry but also with comfort.
“You used to love swimming with us and I mean c’mon I stopped him, no points for that?”
“You only stopped him because the death of Mor’s favourite cousin would have meant your certain death”
“I’m telling Rhysand you said that”
“Fine by me, he knows” You smirked before skipping along, hands behind your back in rested peace, your head gazing up through the canopy, the stars beginning to sparkle down over the moon-bathed forest. Azriel marvelled towards you, somewhat enamoured at the strong sense of peace radiating from his best friend's sister. You stretched above the sunken path towards a low-hanging branch, bright blush berries glowing in the scarce light. Your linen shifted slightly from your skin as you reached, revealing the troves of scars and chasms from the savagery of Spring's deepest betrayal of Azriel’s chosen family. You turned to him, a childlike grin as your cheeks filled with the lush fruit, a small laugh leaving Azriel as he gently shook his head.
“Come here Kid, you’re all berry” He smiled, running the back of his sleeve down your cheek, banishing stray seeds until you pushed his arm away.
“I’m like 10 years younger than you Gramps”
“And I’ll always take care of you because of it” Soft tones of sincerity radiated from the Spymaster, his usual sarcasm towards you banished for a moment of truth.
“Until you get old and frail and I send you to a retirement camp, you have about five good years left my friend” He shoved you back with a laugh, moment over.
Another hour of so of what felt like aimless walking culminated in the both of you scaling prehistoric trees to settle in the canopy for rest, safe from the creatures roaming below in search of their next meal.
Leaks of light snuck through the budding Spring flush of growth, crossing Azriel’s eyes until he stirred from his sleep. He sat up from his hammock, to look over to the adjacent tree to find your sling empty.
“YN?” He yawned out, stretching as the branches creaked with the movement, your lack of reply had him calling out again. Azriel’s boots nearly split the soil on landing as he tried his best to keep his imagination from running away with his logic. He always woke up first and always had to haul you from your sleep, you were famously not a morning person. He called louder into the forest, listening back for any reply or clue as to where you’d run off to. He found his step quicken to match his heartbeat as he transversed great ground quickly. Light flashed around him as he found the edge of one of Illyria's many mountainous lakes, to see your silhouette floating in the centre of it.
“YN!” He roared out, no response from you as his imagination very much took control. Without full consciousness, he tossed his over jacket to the ground, his heavy boots taking a spot next to it as he waded quickly into the silty lake, still calling for you. His feet could no longer touch the muddy bottom as he reached you in the centre of the still lake.
“YN!!!” A marred hand met your abdomen as the other found your lower back beneath the water, forcing your body up where you jolted out of your trance, thrashing water as you kicked your legs awake.
“What the fuck you frightened me!” You pushed back from his hold, wrapping your arms around your waist, your snowy tank top clinging to your wet skin.
“You frightened me! What are you doing out here?” He pushed his wet hair from his face, allowing the colour to return to his face.
“I was getting the moss and leaves out of my hair after yesterday’s little escapades, no need to lose your head” You shot back, before beginning to swim back to shore.
“I was calling for you! I thought something terrible happened to you!” Azriel allowed uncharacteristic anger to leech through his words as you both met the shore again. You turned your back to him as you wring out your hair, the drips of water creating mud in the dust. The soaked fabric clung to the fissures in your back where your wings once sat proudly, Azriel swallowed deeply at the sight, trying to keep the crime from inflating his anger further. You turned at his silence, noticing the path his eyes would have followed.
“Something terrible already did happen Azriel” You bit, snatching your overshirt from the ground to shroud your scars, your shaking hands attempting to lock the buttons into place as the dots connected in Azriel’s head.
“Is-is that why you don’t swim anymore? You don’t want people to see-to see what they did?” You looked up slowly through your eyelashes, hands on the final button before uprighting yourself completely.
“The world should know what they did to me, what no amount of healer study I do can fix, what Tamlin’s fath- what that Court did to me, to my mother to my sister-” You bit out, the anger heating your skin seemingly drying the beads of water on your flesh “-and they will one day when Rhysand decides, when I am once again of use to my Court”
“YN, you’re of use now” he attempted to silence your inner voice escaping into the world, only to have you raise a palm.
“To answer your question, no, that’s not why I don’t swim with you anymore, I don’t because Aruna loved it and the water feels wrong without our little sister-” Cold burning rage that Azriel was accustomed to seeing in Rhysand but never from you filled the space between you.
“Now, let's go find that flower and go home, I’m not losing another sister” Azriel only nodded before leading the way back to the make-shift camp in contemplative silence.
The next few hours carried that thematic silence through the woods, only the occasional check-in broke it up. You didn’t even comment when Azriel released multiple branches in your direction or when you definitely passed the same boulder twice. The soles of your shoes were leaving imprints on your feet but you stayed silent, refusing to give Azriel the satisfaction of being right when he told you to change your shoes.
Azriel swung around to you on his heels as you released a blood-curdling scream from your exhausted lungs, a nearby bird fleeing the tree top at the raised alarm. His face lost any flush of colour as his eyes locked on the arrow piercing through your right thigh. He moved quickly to guide you to the floor as you screamed, blood spurting free from your flesh. In one swift movement, Azriel shielded you from another targeted arrow, it splicing one of the veins of his wings as he winced.
“Azriel!” You cried, your shaking hand going towards the bloodied arrow.
“Stay down!” He ordered, pulling some shrubbery over you as you crowed, his century-long training kicking into action as he launched in the direction of the ammunition. Tracking and trailing as fast as he could until he found the perpetrators, two members of the Hybern army armed to their teeth in weaponry. Azriel launched into swift movements, like a well-learned dance with vicious precision.
Meanwhile, you snapped the long end of the arrow, leaving the cruel head with its teeth buried in your flesh. You pulled yourself up, desperate to follow the sounds of your best friend and his battle cry. Your hobbled step worked perfectly with your exhausted feet, sending you crashing for a second time this trip, down a bank to a stream. The welcomed thud of a great tree stopped you before you could enter the rushing water. You lifted your face from the squelch of the river clay, hazy eyes landing on a brilliantly blue flower, growing like a solitary soldier between ancient rocks. You groaned as you pushed up from the mud, your detour causing the head of the arrow to be pushed in further. You managed to snatch the lifeline from its home, tucking it into your pack before beginning your laboured ascent up the steep bank. The definition of an uphill battle as you fought against the overgrowth, using deep root systems like rescue ropes until you reached the mouth of the bank again. Your faltering step carried you in the direction of the Spymaster, who was deep in his own entanglement. You watched as Azriel slashed the leg of one soldier before pressing the other into a knotty tree trunk, his blood soon covering Azriel as Truth Teller dealt its fatal blow.
“Azriel!” You shrieked in warning as the other soldier regained some strength, just as Azriel turned to your voice, a green-soaked blade slid into the Shadowsinger’s wing releasing pressurised blood systems.  The advantage didn’t last very long before Truth Teller claimed another victim, the soldier slumping to the ground with a final breath. Azriel stumbled backwards, his adrenaline fleeting until the support of a large oak met his back, allowing him to slide to the cool ground.
“Az!” You yelped, limping to collapse next to his side, pallor growing across his face. You ran a hand over the wound, bright scarlet mixing with the sickly poison of a blade.
“I told, I told you to stay” He spoke with gritted teeth, attempting to sit more upright against the tree.
“You know I try my best to never listen to you” You smiled weakly, tears beginning to threaten the rim of your eyes as Azriel’s head dipped to fall on his chest. You moved quickly to prop his head up, his eyelids like lead as the poison worked through his system.
“We have to get you help, we have to get back”
“I-I can’t winn-ow both of-of us” Huffs of air left Azriel.
“Winnow yourself, I’ll figure it out” He lifted a heavy eyelid open, looking down to find your wound weeping fresh blood, swirling into his own.
“The-re there could be mor-more of them out here YN, you-you have to be the one to-to go”
“No!” You began digging through your pack, pouring the canteen of drinking water you had over his wound, trying to flush as much of the sick serum out as you could. The cobalt shimmer of the flower caught your eye again as you dug through for more water, looking from its bright colour to the dullness in your best friend. You began mashing it up into the lid of the canteen, its healing powers flowing into the water as you shook the two lifelines together.
“YN you-you found it”
“I did Az and you’re going to drink it” He pushed away slightly from you.
“Its-its for Feyre, get it to Feyre”
“I’ll figure that out, you need it Az” You held the lid of the canteen to his lips, Azriel turning his head from it despite his screaming nerves calling out for its relief.
“Kid, it’s too-too valuable, give it to Feyre”
“You’re too valuable Az! I’m not losing you too, for once in your Godsdamn life don’t fight me! Let me look after you for once!” You grabbed the nape of his neck, tilting his head back to help the liquid into his mouth despite his futile protests. The sacred serum swirled through his system, like a torch in a blackout, defending off the tar-like liquid that tried to clog his system. You took your overshirt from your skin, ripping the clean sections free to soak in the remaining drips in the lid before applying it to the wound.
“No YN, use-use it on yourself” He tried his best to push your arm away, unable to find the strength to allow you to make contact with the tattered spine. Unbeknownst to you, in your adrenaline-fueled state, your trousers were becoming laden with the blood spurting from your wounds. You sat back on your ankles, two Azriels dancing in your double-vision. You forced your eyes close, trying to banish one of the Azriels away, the swirl of blood loss becoming a bit too much as you fell back on your side, using a weakened arm to prop yourself up.
“YN! You’re okay Kid! You’re gonna be okay, stay awake” Azriel turned himself onto his knees, his strength finding its way back to him as his hands met the soft skin of your cheeks, blood leaving them to rush towards your open wound.
“I knew you’d be the death of me” You gave a weak laugh, your head rocking slightly from side to side. Azriel gave a small smile before closing the space between you, his medicinal-soaked lips meeting your frosted ones. Pulses of energy beat between you both, like everything that has ever happened both good and bad didn’t matter before this moment, each other’s lifeline in every sense. The traces of the river flower pulled you back from the brink with the essence of Azriel’s every being guiding you home. Shadows leapt around you both, pulling you both through the space until cool, clean stone laid under your legs. Azriel pulled back from you, his thumbs tracing over your cheeks as your eyes fluttered open.
“Are you kissing my sister?” Rhysand stood from his desk to look down at his closest allies, in a ball on his office floor. Cassian leapt to help you up, lying you down on the chaise before Rhysand went to pull Azriel to his own feet.
“It-it was to save her life” Azriel had thoughts of wishing the arrow had finished him off.
“Likely story” Rhysand laughed, guiding his dear friend to his desk chair before sending for Madja. Cassian busied inspecting your battle wounds.
“We were attacked and-and they poisoned me and YN she-”
“-she gave you the flower?” Rhysand sank to Azriels eyelevel, searching for answers in the stormy eyes of the Spymaster. Azriel nodded gently, his head hanging in both shame and exhaustion.
“It's okay Azriel, I wanted it for my mate, YN wanted it for hers” Azriel’s head shot back up to look at the High Lord's grinning face. Rhysand raised his hand to his face, making a locking motion at his lips before standing again, Madja quick on the scene to help.
—-------------------
5 years later
Azriel stood at the water's edge, the small lapping of the lake at his feet, the sun warming his wings as he stretched in the healing heat, a small V-shaped scar left in one of the spines. He allowed his eyes to fall close, inhaling the scents of the forest and the whoosh of the gentle breeze.
“Argh!” He flinched at the sudden wave of cold water meeting his face, rubbing it from his eyes until he opened to see you stood, waist-deep in the lake and laughing.
“You’re dead” He laughed before wading in as you roared with laughter, attempting to swim away from him to your friends. You took Nyx from Cassian’s arms as Azriel reached you.
“I have the baby!” You laughed.
“Oh weak move YN, hiding behind a child” He tilted his head back in laughter, Nyx kicking water up at his uncle, his own fit of giggles leaving him.
“Not you too Kid! Betrayal!” Azriel chuckled, wiping the water from his face that Nyx quickly replaced again. You hugged Nyx close into your chest, Azriel paddling closer to you, his arms wrapping around the both of you, his hands tracing down the scars on your back, melting into the deep fissures on his hands, making the skin feel whole again.
“Hey Az! Someone’s awake!” Rhysand called from the shoreline before bending down to the travel cot, pulling your baby from her cocoon, still swaddled in plush towelling. Cassian took Nyx from your arms before tossing him high in the air, Feyre immediately lecturing him. You and Azriel went laughing to the shore again, stray splashes escaping you both. Azriel took the baby from his brother's arms, kissing her head softly as she looked up at him, his entire world.
“Hello Flower”
Whatcha think?
A Road Well Traveled (Azriel x Reader)
Part 3
Word Count: 2028 Warnings: Anger, mild language Part 4 Part 2
Tumblr media
Cassian's grin falters, his expression softening at your apology. He rubs a hand over his face, the excitement now replaced with a hint of remorse. "Oh, come on," he groans, walking over to you. "Don't do the guilty act. You know it doesn't suit you." He slowly pulls you in for a hug, wrapping his arms around your shoulders. You wrap your arms around him tightly, hoping they couldn't see how close to breaking you really were. The thickness in the room dissipated slowly, but never fully. "You really are a pain in my ass, you know that?" he mutters, resting his chin on the top of your head.
Amren hums, catching your attention as you release Cassian and turn towards the strange, small female. "Amren. You seem...different," you say carefully, unsure how to explain it. Amren raises an eyebrow, the corners of her mouth tilting into a slight smirk. "Different? Is that your way of saying I've lost my touch, girl?" she asks, her voice smooth and slightly mocking.
You grin slowly. "I would never," you say earnestly.
Amren's smirk widens into a rare smile that reaches her eyes. "I always knew I liked you for a reason," she replies, her gaze flickering over your form. "You are different, as well, are you not?" she observes, her eyes narrowing.
You tense, your own eyes narrowing. "That's enough, Amren," you say, voice firm. Fear had never ruled over your relationship with Amren, and it wouldn't start now.
Amren holds your gaze for a moment before nodding slightly, recognizing the firmness in your voice. She had a strange relationship with you, one built upon harsh words and respect, but not friendship. "Very well. But remember, I see through your facade," she replies softly, her silver eyes glinting with a knowing look.
You purposely ignored Azriel’s searching gaze, stepping away from the table. You glanced towards the last two strangers you hadn't yet greeted. "You must be Nesta," you eye the fierce looking female seated next to Cassian. Then, you meet soft doe eyes across the table. "Making you, Elain."
Nesta’s sharp, grey-blue eyes narrowed as they fixed upon you, her gaze assessing you carefully. She offers a slight incline of her head, a sign of acknowledgment, but her expression remains guarded. Elain, on the other hand, offers you a gentle smile, her warm, doe-like eyes filled with curiosity. "Yes, I'm Elain," she replies softly, her voice carrying a soft, velveteen undertone.
You open your mouth to say something when Rhysand tilts his head. "Incoming," he warns, his voice warm with affection. A young boy with small bat-like wings comes sprinting in, arms spread wide and barreling into his father. Your expression melts at the youngest and newest addition to the family.
The boy, Nyx, hugs his father’s legs, his wings spread wide and batting at the air as he giggles uncontrollably. Rhysand effortlessly lifts the young boy up into his arms, chuckling warmly as Nyx clings to him. Cassian snorts a laugh, a fond smile on his face as he watches the father and son. "That boy is going to be a nightmare, just you watch," he mutters.
You take small steps forward, eyes latched onto the boy who looked just like Rhysand. "I have missed too much," you murmur softly. You had always promised to stick by your family, had late night discussions with Mor about how you would spoil any child born to this chaotic group.
Rhysand turns towards you, his gaze softening as he takes in your expression. "You're here now," he replies, a faint hint of sadness in his eyes, knowing how much you missed their lives after leaving. Nyx, noticing you for the first time, turns his head, his wide blue eyes studying your face curiously. "Who 'at?" he asks in a small voice, pointing a chubby finger at you.
Rhysand chuckles softly, a loving smile on his face as he turns Nyx to face you, holding him up in the air in front of you. "This is an old friend, Nyx. She went away for a while but has finally come home." Nyx stares at you with wide eyes, his curiosity piqued, then looks back at his father. "But why?" he asks, his small wings flapping gently as he tries to get a better look at you. You can feel your heart break slowly at the little boy's question.
You can feel everyone’s eyes back on you, and you think you’d run out the front door if it didn’t look like Azriel would catch you within the first 30 seconds. Rhysand’s expression softens, sensing your pain. He strokes Nyx's soft black hair, trying to figure out how to answer his son’s question. “People have to go away sometimes, buddy," he starts gently, tilting Nyx's face up towards him. "Sometimes they need some space or to find new adventures."
Rhysand's gaze flicks over to you, his expression shifting to a mixture of understanding and sadness. "But they always come back eventually," he continues, his tone hopeful. Nyx stares at Rhysand for a moment, his youthful innocence struggling to comprehend the concept. He turns his head back to you, his gaze fixated on your face. "You back now," he says, his small wings flapping again.
You nod slowly, a sad smile gracing your face. "I am," you confirm softly, stepping close and rustling his black hair. Nyx's tiny wings twitch with excitement as you brush your fingers through his hair, a wide smile spreading across his face. "Stay again?" he asks innocently, reaching a small hand out to pat your cheek.
You feel your chest ache painfully, and you nod quickly, eyes glancing up to Rhysand before looking around at the important people in your life, and the fresh additions. “I’m not going anywhere,” you state, eyes pausing on Azriel’s hazel orbs.
Nyx's face lights up with joy at your acceptance, his small hand still resting on your cheek. "Yay!" he squeals, flapping his wings even more vigorously. Rhysand chuckles, giving you a small nod in acknowledgement of your declaration. “You always have a home here,” he says, voice tinged with warmth and understanding.
You pull away, breathing in harshly like you’ve been deprived of oxygen. You retreat completely and round the table, stepping back towards Azriel and the entrance. "I brought wine! I don't know if it's up to your standards, but I know it's strong!"
You could feel their eyes on your back as you rushed into the next room and towards your bag by the front door. Pausing, you debate on leaving now, before you have the chance to panic again and mess everything up. A shadow twirls a piece of your hair and you glance back to the entrance of the dining room to find Azriel watching you carefully, his eyes filled with concern. Hand raised in a wave, you turn back and breathe slowly through your nose and open your bag, grabbing the bottle of wine you had packed on a whim. You couldn’t abandon them after declaring that you wouldn’t leave again.
You turn and walk back to the dining room, passing an expressionless Azriel who’s eyes never once left you. Raising the bottle in one hand, you wiggle it a little. “I return bearing gifts!” You declare loudly, proud of yourself for not shaking like a leaf.
Cassian lets out a low whistle, his gaze flickering between you and the bottle you’re holding. "You never fail to show up unannounced and bearing gifts," he says, his tone lighthearted. Feyre chuckles softly, eyeing the bottle curiously. "What’d you bring?" she asks curiously, her gaze flicking to Rhysand, who seems to be carefully observing you and taking his seat with Nyx on his lap.
"I picked it up at the local inn on the main continent a while ago. The locals wouldn't stop singing its praises so I bought a couple of bottles. It's like...strawberries. Fancy strawberries. "
Cassian's interest peaks at your words, his eyes widening. "Strawberries?" he repeats, an intrigued grin spreading on his face. "You got my attention," he says, his gaze fixed on the bottle. "I didn’t think I’d ever see the day where you brought a quality drink."
You wrinkle your nose. "I pick good drinks," you argued, passing the bottle to Mor to do the honors of pouring it around. Mor takes the bottle, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. "I swear to the Mother, if this tastes like piss I’m going to laugh in your face," she mutters, pouring the drink into each wine glass presented.
You shake your head with a grumble, dragging Azriel to the table and taking a seat by Elain and Azriel on your other side. Azriel allows you to drag him to the table, his expression neutral but his gaze never leaving you.
Mor hands the glasses to the different members of the table, her gaze flickering to you with amusement before taking a small sip of the drink. "Not as piss worthy as I anticipated," she muses, taking another few sips. Hums of agreement sound from around the table, you take a sip and you sigh at the sweetness coating your tongue. “I told you I bring good drinks,” you grin, feeling smug at the line of faces that are clearly pleased.
Everyone relaxes into comfortable silence for a moment as they all begin to enjoy the drink. Cassian glances over at you from across the table, a small frown tugging at his lips. He can’t help but notice the tension still in your shoulders, despite the light conversation around the table. "You still look like you're ready to jump ship at any given moment," he comments, his tone lighthearted but his gaze betraying concern.
Your gaze jumps to his, and you force your expression to remain neutral. "I don't know what you mean, Cass." Everyone can hear the warning tone beneath it, eyes flitting between the two.
He raises an eyebrow at your response, his gaze narrowing. "Oh, really?" he huffs, scoffing at your response. "You look like the wrong thing said will get the whole table stabbed," he says bluntly, but his gaze remains concerned.
Your eyes darken, feeling Azriel’s quiet presence beside you, shadows twisting around your hands. "Drop it, Cassian." Your voice firm, eyes darkening. Nyx holds onto Feyre with wide eyes, having been passed to his mother as Rhysand’s gaze sharpens at the scene before him.
Cassian pauses at your sharp tone, his eyes narrowing in frustration. He can see the warning in your eyes, the silent request to drop the conversation, but his worry gets the better of him. "You can't just show up after disappearing for 76 years and expect us not to have questions," he says, his tone growing impatient. You can’t blame him, knowing that you would have to come clean sooner or later. But his tone is getting to you, that dark power flaring to life within your chest and you feel like you’re about to snap, the air around you thickening.
"Cass," Azriel warns, feeling you coil tighter beside him. Your eyes flash, the room dimming. "I expect a single, peaceful evening with my family again." You growl slowly.
Cassian bristles, his hands clenching at the table. "And I expect some damn answers!" he growls back, not entirely his own temper, flaring. You stand slowly, your body tensing for a fight. An unnatural fear creeps around the room and Nyx whimpers.
Rhysand's expression darkens as he feels the tension in the room thicken. His gaze flickers to your poised form, ready for a fight, and he intervenes quickly. "Cassian." His voice is low as he warns his friend to stand down, but his tone leaves no room for argument. Cassian looks over at his High Lord, his frustration replaced by a reluctant obedience. He lets out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping as he relents.
You don't feel the release of tension, Azriel carefully wrapping a shadow around your shoulders. You turn your piercing eyes to him, and he guides you with a hand on your back, wordlessly leading you away from the table and towards the balcony.
Rhysand
You and Rhysand have been known each other since you were babies. Your mother was best friends with his, and ever since then, you have been inseparable.
As the years passed by, you started developing feelings for him, feelings you'd never thought you'd have for Rhysand because all you were to him and all he was to you, was a best friend. But you couldn't deny the fact that throughout the years, every moment with him, all the laughter you shared together, all the sleepless nights you spent on the balcony, counting the falling stars, made you realize just how much you loved him. And just like that, you realized you were in love with him.
But what you didn't know was that Rhysand felt the same way. Every time you two were together, he felt like he couldn't breath properly. It all happened one solstice, you two were far away fro the crowd wanting to spend some quality time together. You were dancing, singing and having fum on your own. And when the statfall happened, his eyes were glued on you only. He was looking at you as if you one of stars that are falling from the sky, and you landed right next to him. That was one of his favorite moments, and it was specifically the one that he was sure he lost his heart to you.
One night as Rhys laid on his bed ready to sleep, he thought of you. He took a deeb breath and exhaled, trying to find a way to sleep. But he knew it was impossible knowing that you were a room away. He turned on his side and closed his eyes. But then he felt something changing in the atmosphere. He felt like something had knocked a breath out of him and he gasped standing up immediately. Rhys touched his chest feeling his heart beating fast, and he tried to calm himself down. Without spending a second more in his room, Rhys opened the door and started walking straight to your room but before he could knock on your door, you opened it fast. You looked like you jumped through hoops.
"You..." Rhys whispered and took a step closer to you slowly. You were panting, looking like you jumped through hoops.
" Rhys...my mate" your eyes welled up with tears and smiled so wide, that your cheeks were hurting. When Rhys heard you calling him your mate, he chuckled not believing you said these words and cupped your face in his hands.
"My mate" he growled and gave you a deep, love-filled kiss that swept you off your feet. His hands went to your waist and pulled you closer, his warmth enveloping you.
"What's all the fuss about I need to slee- oh" Cassian smirked as his eyes fell on you and Rhys. And then his whole expression into a shocking one. "OH! I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOU TWO WERE MATES!" He was ready to approach you but stopped in his tracks once he saw Rhys hard expression.
"Don't you dare take a step closer Cassian" he said in a serious, dark voice that gave you shivers and made your legs wobble.
Rhus turned to you and took you in his arms in a bridal style.
"Well guess I'll see you two after a month. Or more"he laughed as Rhus winnowed you to the wind house.
Cassian
Lately everything looked dull to Cassian. Even though he was the life of the party, he recently had become less and less energetic. He felt weird. Watching all these people around him every time he went out being with their other half, made him longing for something like this.
It was late and Cassian wasn't in the mood to rest or talk to anyone at the moment, so he thought it would be best of he took a walk through the beautiful and bright streets of Velaris. When he came across the bar he usually goes with Rhys and Az, he was skeptical about going. Another night getting drunk wouldn't do him any good actually. When he decided to turn around and continue with his walk, a shorter than him figure pumped into him. He heard a small yelp and he instantly made sure that the person wouldn't fall by grabbing them by the shoulders. The girl in front him had her head down, mumbling a few sorrys and once she looked up at him, his breath got caught in his throat. You were so beautiful. He kept staring at you and slowly stepped back.
"I'm so sorry I-"
"It's fine I'm fine a-are you ok? Are you hurt?" He voice was shaking and he wanted to slap himself for that.
You smiled and shook your head.
"Nope I'm good. I'm Y/N"
"Y/N" Cassian whispered, repeating your name. It felt like a sweet nectar rolling down his tongue when he said it.
"Ah...I'm Cassian" He smiled widely and moved closer.
"Nice to meet you! I should go cause I'm in a hurry but I hope to see you again soon!" You said and walked away, looking back one last time.
"Yeah sure bye" he waved and watched you walk away. He wanted to go with you. He didn't care where you went but on thing he knew is that he wanted to be with you. That night when he returned home, he didn't sleep at all. His thoughts were constantly on you.
Ever since that day he made sure to go for a walk every night, with the expectation of seeing you again. And even though he never had the chance to mee you with you yet, he wouldn't give up thay easily.
"Hey Cassian, how about we go for a drink?" Rhys suggested.
"Ah that would be great but I think I'll pass. I thought about going for walk. You know, it's refreshing especially after practicing for hours"
"Whay is up with you lately? Oh don't tell me, is there a woman? Who is it?" Az asked smirking at his brother.
"No nope no woman just me enjoying the chilly fresh air of Velaris anywaysgottago" he said and left Rhys office and his brothers stood there, laughing at his reaction.
Cassian was standing outside the bar, hoping to caught a glimpse of you somewhere in the crowd of the people who passed by. To his disappointment, you were nowhere to be seen and groaned to himself as he took a turn to leave.
"Cassian!" His head whipped up so fast and turned to your direction. There you were. Seeing your beautiful smile after all these days, was the greatest thing to witness. The moment you started walking towards him, something inside him snapped. And he could tell by your expression that you felt it too. You just stood there with your eyes widened. He felt his body shaking and was unable to make a move.
Nothing mattered at the moment. It was just him and you. The bond had finally snapped. And the most unbelievable and extraordinary thing ever, was that you were his mate. You are his other half. You are his everything. You.
He wasted no more time. He ran up to you and swooped you up in his arms. You wrapped your arms around his arms and held him tightly against you. You both started laughing from happiness and when you pulled away from the hug, and leaned in for a kiss. A kiss you both needed more than you thought. Cassian cradled your head and kissed you deeper. He couldn't break away. You couldn't break way.
After a few minutes you pulled away and Cassian looked at you.
"Look at you, my mate. My" he placed a small kiss on your nose "mate" and then another one on your lips again. You giggled and hugged him tight.
"How about we go somewhere with less crowd watching?" You whispered. Cassian didn't look away from your eyes once and said:
"Let them look. I'm the happiest male in Velaris right now." He murmured and sweetly kissed your forehead.
Azriel
His eyes followed your figure carefully. He was captivated by you the moment he stepped foot in the library 2 months ago and saw you reading a book on a table close to the window. He can't really explain what was it that made him want to get to know you but he couldn't help it because he was already intrigued by you. He was sitting on a table a little bit further from yours, and looked your way every now and then. He was now watching you placing the book you've been reading for the past hour back on the shelf, and when you turned around you eyes met. You looked at him with a blushed face since you caught him staring, and hesitantly waved at him.
His eyes widened slightly and cleared his throat standing up from his position. He avoided your gaze at all costs and left the library without glancing once behind him.
The moment he stepped outside he inhaled and exhaled a long breath, trying to take his mind off you. He closed his eyes and yet he could still see your beautiful eyes looking back at him the moment your eyes met his. He opened them again and winnowed away, not wanting to stay any longer here.
The next day he went to practice with Cass, wanting to release some tension and then go help Rhys with some things regarding the court's safety and more. Once he finished with all his tasks he was ready to go back to his room but his heart told him to do otherwise. And that's how he found himself standing outside the library's front door.
"What Am I even doing?" He murmured to himself and stepped inside. Clotho was in her usual position, behind the desk near the entrance and when she saw Azriel coming in, she raised her eyebrows. He awkwardly said hi amd went straight to an empty table. He sat down and rested his head in hos hands. The sound of soft footsteps making their way to him got his attention and when he lifted his head, his whole body got tensed.
"Hi" hearing your soft voice gave him goosebumps.
"Hi" he greeted back not wanting to seem rude and made way for you to sit.
You happily sat on your seat and opened your book. He wanted to get up and leave because being around made him so unusually nervous but he didn't find it in him to abandon you juse like that, so he kept himself busy by staring out the window. And though you were invested in the book you chose, you couldn't help but throwing a few glances at the shadowsinger from time to time. Azriel feeling your stare, he turned his head to your direction and your eyes locked. As you kept staring at each other, not being able to say or do anything more something spectacularly beautiful happened.
The bond locked into place. Nothing else could be heard at that moment but the sound of your hearts beating loud. Azriel was puzzled. You scooted a little closer to him and slowly reached out to grab his hand. The shadow singer's breath hitched the moment he felt your lips on his palm, leaving a soft kiss.
"Can't believe you finally felt it" your hand caressed his face gently. Wait what?
"You knew?! Since when?" He whispered and leaned closer.
"Since the moment I saw you returning a book you borrowed which was, 2 months ago" your little laugh filled his heart with happiness. He chuckled not being able to comprehend what just happened.
"We're mates" Azriel said smiling.
"We're mates!" You nodded and laughed at how happy you were right now.
You just stayed there just holding each other's hands, but Azriel's eyes went to your lips. There was so much tension between you already and he couldn't take it anymore. He needed to feel you. Taste you.
He instinctively ran his thump over the soft flesh of your lips, making you quiver. He knew what he was doing.
He leaned forward a fraction ready to capture your lips in a kiss but he slightly pulled back.
"Do you want this?"
"More than you can imagine"
Azriel then started sliding his hand in your hair slowly and then brought your face closer. Once his lips touched yours, he felt like melting.
In all his life, all he did was to avoid beautiful things in fear of breaking them. But you changed that entirely for him. You made him feel lovable and unique with just one look. One touch. And he knew he had finally found his purpose in life after so long.
This was beautifully written. I'm shedding tears of joy STOP ✋️
I never thought of historiography as something that would fit SO well in a fantasical setting. And the fact that the mate's job isn't just a placeholder and actually fits so well in the story is such a breath of fresh air (no shade to anyone)
REBLOG HER FICS PEOPLE GIVE MORE LOVE
𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞! [PT 2]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: The Inner Circle is still oblivious to Azriel and his mate’s bond. Will the couple’s agreement to forgo secrecy open their eyes? Or will they just remain obtuse? Read Part 1! Work Count: 4.5k+  Warnings: Very suggestive, Timeline? What timeline?, Inner Circle are idiots, Historiography, I put too much detail into things that probably didn’t need it but oh well. A/N: I’ll be honest, writing this took so much out of me that I kind of hate it. Now the reader’s job has more to do with the plot, though it really was me just getting a little too into the historical study of a fictitious fantasy world. HISTORIOGRAPHY ROCKS. (If anyone finds the 30 Rock reference in here I’ll kiss you with tongue)
Tumblr media
Her head pounded as she stared at the documents. After years immersed in the historical field- starting with historical study, then historiography- her work had become too… stagnant for her. She loved what she did, of course, but her job had become less about discovering great historical finds and more like gathering fractured accounts.
She was happy, she truly was, but being with Azriel these past few months made her greedy. She wanted more. Maybe it was the Spymaster rubbing off on her, but she was itching for something big, something that would shake her field.
The library had quieted around her. Hours ago it had buzzed with soft voices and rustling of robes. Now, it was still and deathly quiet, with the priestesses away at evening service. The hours had slipped away unnoticed.
She sighed as she closed the 3 books scattered in front of her. She’d sworn to Azriel that she would leave before the priestesses even left for last service. Though the shadows circling her seemed content to let her stay, she knew better than to test her mate’s patience.
Just as she began to rise, she heard the familiar rhythm of Azriel’s footsteps.
“Yes, I know Az,” she called before even looking back at him. “Don’t worry, I am pissed at myself too. Didn’t even get to the work I had wanted done today,” she groaned as he entered the reading nook she had settled herself into early that morning.
He laughed quietly as he brought his hands to cradle her face, brushing his thumbs along her cheekbones as he kissed her forehead. He laughed a little harder when she whined before finally kissing her on the lips.
Footsteps echoed nearby. She pulled back quickly, but Azriel only grinned before tugging her back in. His arms locked around her waist as he kissed her, reminding his mate of their agreement: no more hiding.
As the sounds of the priestesses’ footsteps disappeared, along with a few shocked gasps and giggles, the two of them broke apart. She looked at him in confusion.
“We made a deal, did we not?” He asked.
“Yes, but that was only in front of your family-”
“And what do you think will happen when a few priestesses stumble upon us like this? While their gossiping is mostly harmless, it is rampant. I’d kind of like to see how quickly it makes it to Nesta, and whether or not she tries to say anything.” Azriel reasoned.
She narrowed her eyes at her mate but didn’t argue. He wasn’t wrong. The library might be sacred, but it was also a pressure cooker of whispered scandal. One that no one escaped unscathed.
As the two walked back out of the library, Clotho beckoned the two to her desk.
At least have the decency to pretend you are trying to hide any dalliances in the library. Her pen scribbled.
Azriel’s face lit up in amusement, while his mate’s was cast in embarrassment. As the latter began to apologize profusely, Clotho waved her hand in dismissal before her pen began to write again.
The priestesses needed something new to discuss, many find comfort in silly gossip. By dinner they will be making lists of baby names.
The couple blushed a deep crimson at that. Azriel inclined his head in a silent goodbye, taking his mate’s hand and squeezing it tightly before the two walked back to the House of Wind proper.
Tumblr media
The sitting room in the House of Wind was light and buzzing, alive with laughter and heated by the well fed hearth.
Like the rest of the room’s occupants, the Night Court’s historiographer and her Spymaster mate were drunk.
Neither were big drinkers typically. Azriel claimed growing up alongside Rhysand and Cassian had meant he had consumed more alcohol before the age of 200 than most fae did in a lifetime. These days, he preferred to keep his wits about him more often than the rest of his family. His mate shared similar sentiments, only getting drunk for special occasions.
But tonight had in fact been a special occasion.
Mor had returned from a month-long stint in Hewn City. While Rhysand typically never encouraged her to stay more than a few days at a time, the two had recently launched quite the campaign to uproot the rot embedded in the Court of Nightmares, a feat that warranted longer and longer visits each time. When she’d come home that very afternoon, the exhaustion and haunted look etched into her face had worried her family.
What had begun as “just a nightcap” had quickly spiraled into a full-blown celebration.
After several bottles of expensive wine and a few decanters of something suspiciously strong and equally as vile tasting, the entire Inner Circle was comfortably drunk.
Azriel’s mate had curled into the corner of one of the plush couches with a wine glass in hand, her cheeks flushed and eyes glassy, the room spinning at borderline nauseating speeds. Next to her, Azriel slouched lower than anyone had ever seen him, his normally rigid frame nonexistent as he melted into the cushions. He was dressed in loose linen pants and a button up with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, an elegant but far more relaxed departure from his usual Illyrian leathers. Even his shadows seemed drowsy, coiling like cats around his ankles
“She then told him to fuck off,” Cassian howled, halfway through a story that had been going on for far too long, “after he complimented her speech!”
Azriel’s mate snorted into her drink, too inebriated to be embarrassed, “He sounded surprised that a speech on the importance of historiographical methodology could be interesting,” she protested. “It was rude of him to think otherwise!”
Azriel’s low laugh warmed her insides, “Always the peacekeeper,” he murmured, teasing.
“Oh please, you know you love it,” she shot back, nudging his shoulder with her own.
Mor raised an eyebrow at the interaction. “Az, is that a blush on your face?”
“How drunk are you, Azriel?” Feyre added, her tone steeped in amusement.
Azriel swirled the amber liquid in his glass as he drawled, “Somewhere between a lot and very.”
Everyone chuckled, but their eyes soon zeroed in on the look he gave the female tucked against his side. The way their hands brushed one another, the way Azriel leaned in every time she laughed, closing his eyes as if to savor the sound, even the way his shadows curled protectively around them both.
Cassian rolled his eyes dramatically at the pair, “Mother above, the tension between you two makes me sexually frustrated.” He groaned
Azriel didn’t flinch. Based on the absolute torture he’d endured every night in his bedroom in the House of Wind, unable to sleep because of the noises Cassian and Nesta had been making, he knew that to be a lie, so the Shadowsinger didn’t dignify his brother’s words with a response.
“Not everyone has to be as vocal about their feelings as you are, Cassian. Don’t force Azriel to be what he is not.” Nesta said coolly.
Azriel gave her a look of mock offense. “I’ll have you know, I’m very vocal about my feelings. It’s not my fault you’re all too dense to notice.”
His mate dissolved into a fit of giggles she tried to hide with her wine glass, only to end up amplifying the noise with the action. “Oh yes Azriel,” she gasped, “you are so vocal about your feelings, especially last night: ‘Oh Gods, fuck, your mouth feels so good on my-”
A scarred hand clamped over her mouth with lighting speed.
Azriel looked mortified- for all of two seconds- before both of them collapsed into wheezing giggles on the couch.
Soon the laughs were the only sound that could be heard in the room as the rest of the Inner Circle fell into shocked silence.
Mor blinked, “Did she just-”
“Oh she definitely just-” Feyre whispered.
“Are you two…” Rhysand began, also unable to finish his sentence.
“Inside joke.” Azriel said halfheartedly. The pair agreed they wouldn’t outright say anything, nor outright deny their relationship, but they hadn’t actually been asked a question.
His mate nodded, face beet red but grinning wickedly, “Very inside.”
The two descended into wheezing laughter once more, the rest of the room soon joining in, albeit confused.
Amren was the only one who didn’t laugh, watching the pair carefully over the rim of her glass.
While the conversation attempted to pick back up, nothing stuck. The rest of the Inner Circle watched the secretly mated pair, hovering around the edges of realization, circling it like buzzards but never quite landing on the truth.
Through it all, Azriel’s shadows curled protectively around him and his mate as their bond remained hidden in plain sight.
Tumblr media
The next morning Cassian groaned as he unceremoniously dropped into the chair across from Rhysand in the High Lord’s home office, rubbing his temples and whining with the drama of a dying male.
“Whatever was in those decanters tasted like regret and death,” Cassian muttered.
Rhysand, who looked only marginally more functional, snorted without lifting his gaze from the reports in front of him. “And yet you drank 5 whole glasses.” he replied dryly.
“I was recouperating from a day of torture,” Cassian justified, “Nyx has been weaponizing flowers, spreading their poisen throughout my own home. I am not safe anywhere thanks to that child.”
Footsteps sounded down the hall, halting the two’s conversation. Azriel had traded in his relaxed attire from the night before for his usual leathers. While his High Lord and general looked like they felt everybit of the alcohol they consumed last night, Azriel remained composed and unbothered, every inch the formidable Spymaster.
“Its not fair he gets to look like that.” Cassian groaned.
Azriel raided an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Good morning to you as well, Cas.”
Rhysand finally glanced up, a curious expression on his face. “You’re up early. I didn’t think I’d see you till tonight when I found these reports on my desk. I figured you’d be occupied nursing a hangover.”
“I had things to take care of.” Azriel responded.
Both Cassian and Rhysand perked up.
“Like what?” Cassian asked with the subtlety of a battering ram.
“Moving out.” Azriel glanced between them, trying to read their expressions. When the two didn’t say anything, Azriel gave in, “I bought a house.”
Rhysand dropped the reports he had been shuffling in his hands. “You… what?”
Azriel leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. “It's on the outskirts of Velaris… quiet, private, beautiful views.”
Cassian sat up straighter. “Wait- you bought a house? You don’t even like decorating your own room.”
Azriel gave him a look. “I like silence, and hate paper-thin walls.”
“This is slander,” Cassian said turning to Rhys in defense, “Nesta and I have been extremely respectful-”
“You cracked the plaster above my bed.”
Rhysand snorted.
Cassian gaped. “So you dropped a fortune to move out just because of us?”
“I also value my own space, and privacy.” Azriel’s tone was mild, but firm. He was starting to get irritated at the endless questions.
“You are barely home as it is,” Rhys said, narrowing his eyes. “What’s the point of buying an entire house, unless…” he trailed off, eyes sharpening. A beat passed, then another. Rhysand’s eyes flicked towards Azriel’s face. He tried to read his Spymaster’s microexpressions as he had done for centuries.
“You’re not living alone,” he finished. Not a question.
So Azriel didn’t answer.
Cassian and Rhysand looked at each other, then back at Azriel. Cassian’s face lit up when he realized exactly who his brother’s new “roommate” was.
“So that's where all the ‘inside jokes’ came from, why you two were so comfortable last night.” The general reasoned. Azriel had to stop himself from rolling his eyes. They were so close and yet so far.
The High Lord’s face became ashen as he looked at his brother, as if realizing all too late that something had shifted beneath his feet without him even noticing.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” He asked, not hiding the hurt from his tone.
Azriel didn’t miss a beat, “You don’t listen.”
This time, the silence was deafening.
As the tension became a bit too unbearable, Azriel coolly shrugged his shoulders, “You may all come by in about two months. Give us time to finish some things.”
“Are you hosting a housewarming party, Azriel?” Rhysand asked incredulously, choosing to push the lingering sting of Azriel’s silence down.
“Something like that.” Az responded.
She had been working all night on her research paper. Originally, it had been pretty straightforward as far as these things went, that was until she stumbled upon two drastically different accounts of the same battle documented by two soldiers on the same side, not far from the other on the front lines.
And yet every modern interpretation she could find blindly aligned with one or the other. No one questioned the contradiction. Not historians, not theorists, nor any other scholars who had lended their two cents.
Sighing, she realized she wasn’t going to finish the project anytime soon, though she had to admit the thrill of such a discovery had brought enough motivation to continue working until dawn. Azriel, her mate of many months now, was away on a mission and wasn’t due back until dinner the next day anyway.
I should probably ask Rhysand about this, she thought. But it was late and while he most likely would have been up at this time a year ago, Nyx had ruled the High Lord and Lady’s schedules, constantly requiring all their attention just to make sure he hadn’t shifted into the form of a beast or rearranged Velaris’ stars… again. Though they loved their prince, the Dreamers of the Night Court hadn’t appreciated the impromptu redecorating of their beloved skies.
She also simply didn’t want to see Rhysand, still bitter about how he treated Azriel at family dinner those few months before when the Shadowsinger had tried to tell his family about his mating bond.
So instead, the Night Court’s beloved historiographer called someone else.
While late night calls weren’t usually welcomed from the ancient fae female, nor were any calls at any time of day for that matter, Amren was rather thankful for the chance to leave the River House. Ever since Nyx had crowned his Aunt Amren as his favorite person ever, she had been borderline imprisoned at Rhysand and Feyre’s home just so they could get a few hours of work done, or (and this was far more vital for the sake of their court) shower.
Still, in typical Amren fashion, she couldn’t let her gratitude be known.
“You called me away from a glass of very old and very, very expensive wine while I watched the latest episode of The Toddler Tyrant.” Amren teased.
“Nyx sprouted daisies again?”
“Out of Cassian’s ears this time,” Amren answered, breezing past her into the study. Cassian’s suffering at the hands of a toddler had been entertaining at first, but after a while his torment went from hilarious to pathetic.
The historiographer gestured to the scrolls spread across her desk, “These are accounts of the same battle, the same side, same front, yet completely different outcomes. And yet every major historical interpretation aligns with one or the other, like no one bothered to question the discrepancies.”
Though she displayed disinterest, Amren slinked closer to the papers. “That’s war, girl. No one remembers it the same way. Memory makes fools of us all.”
“Except these accounts were written during the war. Not years later. They were created mere hours after the battle in question. The first account claimed the general abandoned his troops, choosing to flee like a coward. The second swore he died protecting them. Both can’t be true.”
“Both could certainly be true, or rather, true to the writers. Maybe what one saw as a cowardly flee from the battle, the other saw end in a valiant death. Personal bias that led both to arriving at their own differing yet truthful conclusions.”
The more she thought about it, the more Amren’s words rang true. While this was a huge oversight in the historical field, it did lend itself to the widespread pattern of historical memory corrupted by the silent biases of the narratives they choose to listen to. “Everyone’s so caught up in what they want to see, they can’t recognize truth, even when it’s parading around in plain sight.”
Amren smirked, “History repeats itself.” Before she stalked off.
As she watched Amren leave, her words echoed in her head.
History repeats itself.
She thought of the different accounts of the battle again: two soldiers, one truth fractured into two. Everyone so caught up in their own perspective they were blind to what was marching right in front of them.
Just like them. Just like her and Azriel.
She looked down at the scattered scrolls on her desk and saw something else for the first time. Not confusion. Not contradictions. Just… love, interpreted differently by each witness.
She thought of the soldiers. One grieving, one bitter, both clinging to their own truths. Both were so sure they knew what happened.
Just like Cassian, swearing she and Azriel were dancing around their feelings.
Just like Nesta, insisting Azriel wasn’t the type to share what he felt.
Just like Rhysand, who couldn’t see beyond the brother he used to know.
She sat back down and wrote one sentence, one that would jump start her greatest project yet.
“We mustn’t only question the historical accounts we see, but our reasons for believing them.”
She dipped her quill in ink, turned to a fresh new page and wrote her new working title.
The Battle for Truth: Perception, Memory, and What We Choose to See
Azriel had been nonchalant about it.
When he and his mate arrived at dinner, he oh-so-casually mentioned the two were hosting a party at their home. A housewarming party, as his family had assumed it was, and a party to celebrate the historiographer’s finished project, one she hadn’t even let Azriel know the details of.
Not one of them had suspected a mating ceremony at the center of it.
The sun was beginning to dip behind the Sidra as the Inner Circle arrived at the couple’s home.
The house was nothing like they had expected. Elegant, but also warm in a way only a home that was truly lived in, truly cared for, could be. The group stopped their various conversations as they tried to take in every detail they could.
The first sign something was… different came when they made their way to the garden. Dozens of candles flickered to life, illuminating the stone walkway. Golden lanterns swayed gently in the trees. A long table stretched beneath the stars, draped in silver and blue linens and set with the finest of dishes. At the end of the garden stood an archway, draped in silk, glowing with candlelight, and unmistakably ceremonial.
"Are we… early?" Feyre asked, glancing around in search of the hosts.
Before anyone could answer, the sound of footsteps came from behind them. As they turned, the Inner Circle was met with a surprising sight.
Azriel caught their attention first, dressed in an elegant navy suit softened by silver detailing. No armour, nor shadows to be seen, just… Azriel.
But it was the female next to him that stole their breath.
She stood beside him in a gown of lighter blue, embroidered with constellations that seemed to shift when she moved. Her eyes scanned the space, looking at the faces of her family, and for a moment, her nerves were evident.
It was only then, when the two walked to the center of the garden and faced their friends, not hiding the ribbon that laced their hands together, deliberate and unmistakable, that realization struck.
“Oh-” Mor breathed.
“-my gods,” Cassian finished, slack-jawed.
Feyre blinked rapidly. “Wait. This is—?”
“You two are—?” Rhysand’s voice cracked mid-sentence.
“Mated,” Azriel confirmed, his voice clear and calm, his hand wrapped tightly around hers. “The priestess left just before you all arrived.”
There was a long pause, almost comically long, but long enough for the couple to start to sweat as they awaited further reactions.
Then Mor let out a loud, disbelieving sound and clutched her chest as if she had been physically wounded. “You traitors! You beautiful, deceiving traitors! How long have you both been…” she trailed off before finding her words, “When did the bond snap?”
The two turned to each other, smiling, before replying in unison, “A while ago.”
“Around half a year.” Azriel added.
Cassian’s head slowly turned from Azriel to his mate and back again. “Are you kidding me?” he said, scandalized. “How come none of us knew? How come I didn’t know? What kind of brother am I?”
“A dramatic one,” Amren deadpanned. “And apparently, an oblivious one.”
Feyre looked between them, mouth parted in shock. Then a slow, radiant smile bloomed on her face. “You’re mated,” she whispered to herself, trying to register the words. “You’re both actually mated.”
At that, Feyre launched herself at the couple, hugging Azriel’s mate first, then Azriel, her eyes glinting with tears. “I’m so happy for you,” she said, breathless. “You both look… I don’t know… lighter, happier.”
Nesta crossed her arms and raised a brow. “Well,” she said coolly, “that explains why the priestesses keep asking me questions about you two and giggling when I looked at them like they were crazy. They asked if you were pregnant last week. I thought they had been hexed.” Though her tone was cool and indifferent, her eyes betrayed her affection.
That earned laughter from the rest as the couple looked at each other with deep blushes on their faces.
It was only Rhysand had remained quiet, far too quiet, his violet eyes fixed on the two of them. And then, without a word, he walked forward.
Azriel’s body went rigid, ever so slightly. But his mate didn’t flinch, didn’t look away.
Rhysand stopped just short of them, looking between the pair.
“I missed it,” he said finally, voice low. “I pride myself on seeing everything, knowing everything, but I completely missed this.”
There was no accusation in his words, but something raw in his tone. No anger, nor judgment. Just the sad realization he hadn’t known his brother as much as he thought.
He looked at Azriel’s mate then, and whatever tension had been between them for the past few months softened. “I’m sorry,” Rhysand said. “To both of you. I was too busy thinking I knew everything that I missed what was right in front of me.”
Azriel’s mate gave him a gentle nod, filled with forgiveness and understanding.
There was a moment of anxious silence, till Amren smirked behind her wine glass and muttered, “Finally.”
The tension shattered.
Laughter rippled across the garden, followed by a chorus of overlapping questions, but Azriel only looked at his mate.
They had decided to do the ceremony part alone, just the two of them, a priestess, and Clotho acting as witness, under the promise she was allowed to give any and all details to the other priestesses to gossip over.
But the celebration was for their family who had, however obliviously, been with them for their entire relationship.
That night, the Inner Circle celebrated under lantern light. The house echoed with laughter, shadows trailing around the garden and dancing to the music.
When the guests had finally gone, after having to be forcibly kicked out, Azriel and his mate sat on the floor in their study.
She sat nervously next to her mate, looking down at their hands still bound together with ribbon. She had promised they would get to that part of the night after she showed him one last thing.
She turned to the coffee table and picked up a leather-bound book. The cover was a dark blue and as she turned to the first page, Azriel recognized her handwriting. She handed the book to her mate who took it in his free hand.
The page was opened to the dedication, written in her neat script, reading:
To the ones who taught me that truth is rarely singular, that memory can be messy, and love, like the historical work I dedicate my life to, can often be found hidden in plain sight.
To Azriel, who saw the truest version of me and waited until I was ready to see her too.
Azriel stared down at the page, tears lining his eyes. His shadows brushed the edges of the paper, like they too were reading it.
“It’s not about us,” she quickly murmured, “not technically. It’s about conflicting battle accounts, probably less exciting but-”
She tried to swallow down her nerves, looking to their joined hands for strength.
“But it’s always been about us, in a way. About how people miss things that are right in front of them, because they’re too busy holding onto the story they think they already know. That’s what those accounts taught me. Two people, on the same side, in the same moment, seeing two completely different truths. They can both be wrong and right. Just like some others we know.” She teased.
Azriel leaned forward, pressing his lips to her forehead. “You’re brilliant,” he whispered against her skin. “And I love you.”
“I know,” she whispered back, angling her head till her lips were just a breath away from his, “but you should say it again.”
“I love you.” He answered before kissing her deeply.
While the bond between them hummed, everything around them grew silent and still, like the shadows and stars themselves had stopped to listen.
