Here's an internet hidden gem for y'all
So I'm fucking around in the network section of Firefox's developer's tools because I'm taking a Django course and I'm looking at the instructor's samples as part of a lecture and I spot this little thing:
and I'm like ????? Sir what are you doing in my browser???
The instructor of this course likes making little references all the time (for example he often uses "42" as a value because of Hitchhiker's), so my first thought was that he is also a Terry Pratchett fan and added him as a value in his sample code, but what is "x-clacks-overhead"?
Well, let me share with you what I found on the X-Clacks-Overhead website:
In Sir Terry's novel "Going Postal", the story explains that the inventor of the Clacks - a man named Robert Dearheart, lost his only son in a suspicious workplace accident, and in order to keep the memory of his son alive, he transmitted his son's name as a special operational signal through the Clacks to forever preserve his memory

introduction. hi :)
hello!!
i wanted to document my process of learning to code :) it's something i've always been interested in, but never got to, because i felt like it would take too much time to become good. well, the time will pass anyways, i need a project to stay sane. i have adhd, so it's somewhat of a developing hyperfixation / special interest for me.
i was using sololearn to learn, before i got paywalled :/ -- now i'm using freecodecamp and will probably also use codeacademy. on freecodecamp, i'm doing the certified full stack developer program which will (from my understanding) teach me to code front-end / client side as well back-end. i knew some HTML to begin with, but so far i've finished the basics of HTML mini-course and am on to structural HTML. After the full HTML topic, the course teaches me CSS, Java, Back-End Javascript and Python.

Progress:
Okay so the authentication for spotify is hard for me to understand and requires user authentication, then making a token request that while expire in an hour. So i focused on what I did know how to do and what I had access to token wise. The Spotify developer home page has a temporary access token for demos. I took that token and made a function to make get request to the API and two functions for top tracks and top artists. Then made some functions to print them in my terminal. Here is what my end product looked like in the terminal.
The data for tracks is proving to just show a years worth of listening even though I specified long_term in my get request.
Here is my code:
I tried just doing track.artist but Spotify handles that as multiple artists so I had to handle them as such.
Next Steps: Tackling the user authentication and token requests and including it in this code.
(Also yes I know that is a concerning amount of My Chemical Romance tracks. I had my MCR phase strike up again with a passion last October and I am still balls deep in it.)

Project update (Next.js) + little API routing tutorial
So my last post was about setting up my back-end using Node.js and Sequelize. After setting everything up it was time to create needed routes and queries. I didn't look too much into how to do it, just made an api folder, made a .ts file for every table I have in my database and filled it with CRUD operations + whatever additional query was needed.
After writing all of this I wondered how do I define links for all of these operations? Well as it turns out, when you put files in an api folder in Next.js, they generate by themself, meaning all of my crud operations were now under the same /api/file_table_name link. Obviously that's bad news. It took me 2 days of rearranging (it wasn't hard, just boring XD) and I got this structure
(This is not an entire structure, just a snippet because the whole structure is kinda big and pointless for demonstration)
So now for getting host/api/tag we have an index.ts file which carries the createTag function which requires just a body that contains new tagName.
For host/api/tag/id we have the [id].ts which carries getTagById and DeleteTag function. Now how do we differentiate between those two operations when they are on the same link?
At the end of your file you should have a handler function for which you write the cases in which certain operation happen. In this case it only depends on the http method, but it is possible to add other cases such as potential query string (the on that start with ? in the link ex. api/posts?sort=asc). Here's the code example from my /stickerpack/[id].ts file
So this means the link is going to be host/api/stickerpack/id?type="".
What surprised me was that you don't fetch id with req.params.id, but you fetch everything with req.query, and Next.js I guess just figures out what is a parameter and what is not based on the file name. Another surprising thing is the obvious "id as any" situation XD. It did not work any other way. No idea why. I'll look it up when I get the energy.

so today i messed around with react and managed to get this navbar working:

"learn to code" as advice is such bullshit. i have learned and used four and a half different coding languages through my career (html/css, java, python+sql, c++) and when i say used i mean I've built things in every one but the things that i actually used these languages for??? these earn zero money (with the caveat of until you have seniority in, e.g. front end web dev) what people really mean when they say learn coding is "learn to code. go into investment banking or finance startups." coding does not inherently have money in it. my absolute favourite part of coding? my peak enjoyment? was when i was developing for a visual coding language (you put it together like a flowchart, so say youre using a temperature sensor and you want it to log the temperature once every four hours, you can put the blocks together to make it do that. i was writing the code behind the blocks for new sensors) and i was earning £24k a year and that wasn't even part of my main role. it was an extra voluntary thing i was doing (i was working as a research assistant in biosensors - sort of - at a university, and was developing the visual code for students who didnt want to learn c++) like. i want people to learn to code, i want people to know how their electrical equipment works and how coding works, but dont believe the myth that there is inherently money in coding. the valuable things, the things people are passionate about are still vulnerable to the passion tax (if you want to do it you dont have to be paid for it). skills arent where the money is, money is where the money is.
#this is a bit incoherent but you know what i mean#i hated coding because it made my brain bend into shapes i didn't like but i did a Lot of coding and i was quite good at it#c++ for mechatronics (coding for mechanical devices usually things id built myself lol x) was my sweet spot#.jtxt#the half language is sql#you could count html and css as different languages. but css is like a framework for html so i dont jfbdhd. maybe thats another half#ive learned and used five languages where css and sql are both half languages jfbshs#also before anyone is like but you can use python for backend web dev and everyone needs that or blah blah databases#i knoooooow. create an extra 20000 database experts and you'll make that a minimum wage role. love it#anyway i used python for my research all the way through my research. from like machine code to image analysis software thatd take half a#day to run bc of the ridiculous volume of my image folders
