Green Lives Matter
My favorite Halloween costume from my childhood (age 10) was The Hulk.
For three reasons:
1.       I made it myself
2.       I wore it two years in a row
3.       It made my outside look how I felt on the inside – tough but complicated
I cut up an old pair of jeans to look as though my tiny legs had busted through the seams and to make it appear like I’d grown taller. I took an old white dress shirt and shredded the sleeves to symbolize my biceps exploding in rage and slightly shredded away the length. I put black (safe) spray paint in my hair and painted my legs, arms and face in Hulk green to complete the look. There is a photo of this masterpiece somewhere in an old album, I just don’t have access to it right at this moment. I know I looked magnificent because I remember the feeling of hiding behind this larger than life character for a night while grunting for candy or else “HULK SMASH!” your front door down. I love this memory.
Now let’s address this – I did green face.
I refuse to apologize and if The Hulk wants to come find me and break me like a hard pretzel, well then he better bring backup because even though I am no longer painting my face green… I have turned myself into a Hulk. Ok, a mini Hulk. But I can conjure up a temper and throw a tantrum while also being completely unreasonable and void of real direction. So... yeah, he’s going to need someone other than Black Widow to come with him.
I should mention that I am white. And not just white – I am Scottish white (Scottish heritage, born in Canada). Fair skinned, blonde hair, green eyes and I once thought mashed potatoes were the best food of all time. Until I discovered garlic mashed potatoes. Mind blown.
“I love humanity, but I hate humans.” – Albert Einstein
Let’s not lie – being white has its privileges. Do I know what all those privileges are? No, probably because I’m privileged in some way. But I find myself going back to the same bit to explain so much that I encounter in life:
Until my high school guidance councillor explained to me what suicide was, I had no idea it was a thing. I had no idea it was a possibility and I certainly did not know that many people were actively participating.
My lack of knowledge wasn’t due to privilege but rather because suicide had never been apart of my life experience. Would we call that ignorance? Some definitely would because it literally means ‘being unaware’. I feel an ignorant person is not only being unaware, but also a first-rate wanker because they won’t educate themselves or evolve and wish to remain blind to reality.
Once I became aware of suicide, I didn’t pretend it didn’t exist. I started to pay attention. I didn’t brush it off as an experience that didn’t affect me but rather a symptom of fragile mental health and I gave it the consideration it deserved as something that many people were suffering through… most of the time alone. If I see something that is wrong, that I know needs my support – I am there.
That is not my privilege speaking, that is my humanity.
Tumblr media
The senseless murder of George Floyd ignited a firestorm.
(A firestorm is a conflagration (an extensive fire which destroys a great deal of land or property) which attains such intensity that it creates and sustains its own wind system. It is most commonly a natural phenomenon, created during some of the largest bushfires and wildfires.)
When I saw the footage on the news – I didn’t understand. I didn’t understand the blank, almost twisted look on that officer’s face as he drove his knee down on George Floyd’s neck. I didn’t understand the blatant inaction of the other officers while witnessing this brutal extinguishing of a human being. I didn’t understand why this level of aggression was necessary on someone who was already subdued. And I didn’t understand why the words “I can’t breathe” didn’t invoke an ounce of compassion or relief.
Then came the protesting. Then the riots. Then the looting. And I still didn’t understand.
While some people want to group all three of these events, in my mind, these are three separate actions. Because by attaching the riots and the looting with the genuineness of the protesting…  it lessons the cause, blurs the intention and distracts from the truth… therefore painting the protestors with a brush of violence, greed and chaos. And that is beyond unfair.
The PROTESTS are NOT out of control.
The pain and frustration are what’s out of control and more importantly the injustice is out of control and people are responding to a situation where they feel angry and powerless. Yes, the fires, destruction of property and looting are awful collateral here but it’s important to not loose focus on what caused this current situation. We often look at with contempt and criticize reactions while forgetting the action that started everything.
And that is another injustice.
I wouldn’t even know how to begin writing about Black Lives Matter or Antifa. I say this because of the controversy surrounding both movements. And if you dive deep enough into the internet, like I did, you too will begin to suffer from what I like to call ‘I don’t know what to fucking think anymore-itis’.
So, I’m going to escape talking about these two groups with this:
“Instead of feeling threatened by and hating a movement, be glad you don’t need a movement.”
Tumblr media
My experience with black people is pretty limited. Not by choice, but rather due to geography, common interests and quite possibly socioeconomics. I can count on one hand the number of black people I knew throughout my school-aged years. My area was diverse in other ways, so no, I did not grow up in White Breadville. I mention all this to lay down a bit of background before I continue.
“I don’t see colour.” How many of us have said this at least once in the last six months? I have. And I probably said it to prove to myself or someone else that I wasn’t racist. But I no longer say that… because the truth is, I do see colour. I see ALL the fucking colours and they are beautiful. It’s people who are ugly.
If you were to ask me point blank if I was racist, I’d tell you point blank – I am not. And I’d say this with absolute belief in my character and sincerity. I care less about your skin colour and nationality and more about you returning your shopping cart to its proper location. That is the truth. Your religion doesn’t bother me at all (as long as you’re not cramming it down my throat) but your ability to treat others with genuine kindness and compassion sure matters to me. And I don’t give a flying fuck how you want to identify… be a Martian, I’m totally cool with that, but bully others in my presence and I will come at you with the full force of nuclear pasta (look it up).
The last handful of months (I’m assuming here) has caused most of us to pull up and examine those deep in the corner of our brain concepts. You know the ones – the ones that might get you questioned by The Thought Police if they existed outside of fiction. It’s ok, we all have those little bastard notions creeping around… no matter the skin colour. I started to take a closer look at some of the things I think and how they would affect others if I wore those thoughts on a t-shirt. Needless to say, I’m not super impressed with myself. Because while I know with all my heart that I am not a racist person, I do recognize that I buy into and perpetuate some stereotypes. And I have zero excuses. This admission makes me a bit uncomfortable, but I’m ok with that… I can learn through discomfort.
I hear many people talking about and referring to white guilt.
-          White Guilt: ‘the feelings of shame and remorse some white people experience when they recognize the legacy of racism and racial injustice and perceive the ways they have benefited from it’.
I do not feel shame and remorse as a white person. As a human being, I am ashamed of how many of my fellow humans treat those who do not look the way they do or do not come from the same background. Do I believe there is a legacy of racism and racial injustice? Yes, 100%. Have I benefitted from this because I am white? I may be too dumb to answer this correctly. Or maybe too white? Or maybe I’ve had blinders on because based upon my own level of perception, I’ve always struggled to navigate my own existence therefore only know what has directly prevented me from being who and what I want in this world?
I underlined ‘level of perception’ because as the quote goes: “I stopped explaining myself when I realized people only understand things from their level of perception”
Earlier I said there were so many things I didn’t understand about George Floyd’s death and the protests etc. but here is something I do comprehend - there’s a big difference between understanding someone’s plight and being understanding of someone’s plight. Sympathy doesn’t require a total understanding of what problems other people are experiencing.
I may not fully grasp the struggles of those in the black community because it is not my experience but I will not ignore, deny or challenge their struggles. I will however educate myself on the issues, observe my own reactions and offer support in the ways I can and offer compassion to anyone who is willing to accept a little love from a min Hulk.
Nothing I write here is meant to change your mind. It is not meant to offend or shame you for how you may feel or think and nothing I write here is meant to lessen the seriousness of the current situation facing an entire community of people. As a writer my only goal is often to just disrupt your thoughts. Period.

Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E45 (Dec. 18, 2018)
Evening, all! @eponymous-rose is off tonight with such silly things like family and events and real life obligations, so I’m here to make bad jokes and have opinions instead.
Tumblr media
For those who hadn’t heard, Brian & Ashley are engaged as of this week! Brian is taking both her last and first name to be ultra-progressive. Tonight’s guests: Sam Riegel & Matt Mercer. Matt is here willingly. Sam is not. We’re discussing Episode 45: The Stowaway, sponsored by LootCrate. Brian asks Sam for an impromptu song ad; he rhymes moot and loot and jigs and everyone is a little closer to death than they were a few moments prior.
Tonight’s announcements: Pub Draw & Name Drop are two new shows on the Critical Role channel--check out critrole.com for more details.
This Thursday’s episode is the last of 2018; Critical Role then returns on January 10.
Liam’s oneshot, The Night Before Critmas, airs at 7pm Pacific this Friday night. He’s been planning it for two years, and the VOD will be available December 23.
Talks Machina is also breaking for the holidays and will return on January 8, where they’ll have a cast-wide discussion on the state of the campaign so far. The questions open on Reddit, Twitter, and email on January 4th.
CR Stats: Nott has the most kills of the group with 37. The 45th HDYWTDT occurred in episode 45 as well. Twiggy’s dragon kill was the fifth guest kill of the campaign, and the 2nd guest HDYWTDT. In campaign one, guests got 22 kills and four HDYWTDTs. This was the longest episode of campaign two and the fourth longest of the series.
Matt and Deborah had met extensively to discuss backstory and mechanics, but hadn’t discussed much personality. The only person who wanted to check voice/accent was Khary (with Shakaste).
Deborah was one of the first guests they reached out to when they started streaming all that time ago, but she initially said no because D&D was such a personal thing for her and she didn’t want to share it with the internet. Everyone agrees she was worth the wait.
Everyone’s furious about Daredevil’s cancellation. :(
Sam thought it was fun to play alongside another Arcane Trickster because... “she was very good at it, all that great stuff that I forget to do.” Nott was jealous that many of the things that made her unique were present in Twiggy. However, the jealousy was later reversed because of how excellent Twiggy was in the fight.
The Happy Fun Ball was a narrative device Matt had been planning for a long time--he liked the idea of a pocket dungeon with lore attached. When they realized Deborah’s schedule would put her on a boat in the middle of nowhere, he found a perfect opportunity to bring it in.
Sam asks if Matt intended the device to be a one-use single episode thing, or something recurring, something for the party to further explore at their will. Matt explains very circuitously (and hilariously) that certain DMs may have in the planning of the introduction of the Happy Fun Ball originally intended for such Happy Fun Balls to leave with the guest, and were very surprised when said Happy Fun Ball (and all its hundreds of extraplanar rooms to explore) was left behind with the party instead. He then basically dares Sam to press a button and see what happens.
Nott doesn’t resent Fjord for touching the window or setting a time limit on the library exploration. While it was cool in the library, there were too many things attacking them.
Matt doesn’t necessarily intend his traps for Travis, but he likes having good buttons and bad buttons. “I just want shit to happen. Surprise me!” He admires the player that occasionally gets bold, rather than the one who always sends their minions out to touch all the tiles and trigger all the traps before they ever set foot in the dungeon. He also enjoys the meticulousness of Liam being at the same table as Travis’s impulsiveness.
Sam does not want the fans to send him larger flasks. His current flask holds 128 oz, which is exactly a gallon.
GIF of the Week: @criticalschluck with a hilarious movie-trailer-style GIF of Travis explaining he’s got an intelligence of 6 (Grog), then an intelligence of 14 (Fjord), then pushing buttons and experiencing... consequences.
Nott approves of Caleb’s choice to abandon the books to go back to the party. While she wants as much knowledge in his head as possible, it’s because “a smarter Caleb is a more powerful Caleb, and hopefully a Caleb that can stay alive a little longer.” Matt likes watching characters be put in situations where they have to choose between long-reaching character goals and the people they have chosen as their family. He was fascinated to see the struggle as he was ticking down the time on his sheet. He’s very excited to see what’s going to happen this Thursday.
Brian and Matt both fanboy over Sam’s 1hp decision.
Sam reflects on Jester’s being left behind--”not in a malicious way, you know, but sometimes in a big family someone gets left behind at a mall!”
Matt circuitously explains that the stained-glass window could be used to access other places. This man’s being slipperier than soap suds on wet tile tonight.
Nott was aware that the hit she took for Jester could have been a killing blow, but she was ready--”it was what goes through her head around Caleb a lot: ‘I’ve got to protect my friends.’” She’s very protective and very maternal, and Sam would have been okay if that had been the last of Nott.
Both Sam and Liam (and others) have begun to experience the in- and out-of-game changes that come with finally beginning to really know these characters. They certainly wouldn’t have died for each other at the beginning of the game, even knowing how hard their friends worked on these characters. It was originally a “system shock” (as Matt puts it) which required check-ins after certain blow-ups at the beginning of the campaign to make sure they (the players) were all okay. Now, though, they’re closer and closer to being willing to die for each other for both in-game and meta reasons.
Sam reflects on how both Caleb and Nott hate themselves, but manifest that very differently in how they treat other people. Caleb withdraws and puts up thick walls; Nott is quick to trust and care about everyone.
Nott is least close to Yasha at the moment. She’s still a li’l scared of her.
Matt had a few battle options planned out regarding which parts of which chamber were futzed with. The black tapestry was the one curtain they didn’t mess with that would have led to a “very rough encounter.” Matt had six maps built off-stage, just in case.
Sam’s backup character is a handsome actor named Sam Seagull.
Brian is annoyed that every encounter starts with the chat screaming “TPK.” Matt: “I hope not. That’d be my fault if that happened.”
While the dragon was very powerful, Matt had expectations that the party would understand very quickly that the fight didn’t necessarily have to end with the dragon’s death--he wanted them to understand the challenge was the exit, not the dragon. However, they came in in a different order than he’d anticipated, including party staggering, and that was when he started to get nervous.
Whatever magic had first triggered the first crystal would have been the same magic required to open the second door. It was proximity-based.
Fanart of the Week: @tehsasquatch, with this super-cool portrait of Nott.
On whether Nott feels as if she’s earned her comma: sometimes, especially in encounters like these, Nott feels just for a moment that she can be brave, she can be useful, she can be heroic--and then the moment it’s over the world comes crashing back down. When she’s out of those moments, she feels that she’s still just a goblin.
Is Sam ready for Nott to get the spotlight Fjord’s currently in?
Tumblr media
Sam: No. Matt: [very intense face]. There’s a lot of backstory elements that he and Matt know that no one else is aware of, and he’s nervous about those coming to light.
The Traveler’s appearance was complete improv. Matt was reading the situation and the emotions and looking for ways to facilitate a heroic story, and when the dice worked in her favor, he felt it would be a wonderful, dramatic story beat to suddenly include--especially since the Traveler hadn’t responded much recently. Matt: “Yeah, that was really cool.”
The Traveler/Jester relationship has evolved in ways Matt both did and did not expect. He wasn’t sure how seriously Jester was going to take it. It’s the difference between believing in something and allowing that thing to define you as a person. He loves it. Sam: “The Traveler...is Taryon, right?”
Nott doesn’t see Caleb as abandoning her at all. “He’s a weak, puny man who needs to get himself out of danger.” It would have actually been harder if Caleb had been there, because if Nott had had to make a choice as to who to protect, Jester would be dead.
After Beau’s emergence from the orb, she probably for a few minutes would have thought that they were all dead behind her. It wasn’t that hours or days had passed--just a few minutes. Matt found Beau’s and Caduceus’s conversation at the end very fascinating and compelling, especially as a way to end the episode.
Nott agrees that Jester is not as happy and fine as she appears to be, especially after their talk about boys, but doesn’t feel it’s as severe as Caleb’s issues. “Jester’s a functional person.” However, Sam’s excited they’re getting past the “flitty person from the first half of the campaign” to the “core of sadness” as the story progresses.
Matt’s sure Yasha was not happy at all that her friends all disappeared without warning. “She spent six days thinking her friends were never going to come back. She doesn’t cry in a corner; she’s familiar with grief and loss. She hardens herself and moves on.” He’s hoping they’ll get to see some of that this week.
Critmas Spotlight: The Blind Weaver, a really, really cool 3D painting by a lady named Elaine Ryan, which has layers upon layers of polyurethane stained to make an amazing effect. See @elaineryanart on twitter and tumblr for more!
Tumblr media
Talks Machina: After Dog
They decide where guests sit at the time of the episode. Matt likes to avoid the edges so they don’t feel like the outlier. Sam requests no attractive guests be placed immediately adjacent to him so that it does not detract from his glory. “That’s why I sit next to doggo Laura Bailey.” Brave man. Brave, foolish man.
Sam likes oatmeal raisin cookies. I am DELIGHTED, WHAT AN OLD MAN WHO SHARES MY TASTE. He also likes Werther’s, which is bringing back so many memories of my grandmother’s house. Matt likes ginger snaps, which are my favorite Christmas cookies also. I would kill for ginger snaps right now. Matt and Sam both are excited about pumpkin pie.
Essential D&D gifts, per Matt: dice, PHB, HeroForge custom minis if you really want to get them excited. He finds that getting in there and making a character can really help hook someone on the visual aspect & get invested in their character. Everything else is fluff. Sam suggests a music playlist for the first game; when he ran his first game with his kids, he liked having gridded paper to draw the maps on.
Matt does not feel that the crew of the ship has been mistreated, but they have been “neglected and dragged through places they didn’t expect.” He does think they’ll talk about everything they’ve done to all their friends and family when they get home in a very “you won’t believe this!” kind of way.
Sam always wears the same tie when he’s voice directing and on the first day of a new show. He’s wearing it tonight and can’t discuss the new show.
Favorite holiday movies! Brian: “Love, Actually” and “Die Hard,” as well as “Miracle on 34th Street.” Matt loves “A Christmas Story” (my favorite also, bless this man). Sam likes “Prancer” and “Scrooged,” but realizes mid-sentence that this is Brian’s first Talks as an engaged man.
Brian on proposing: ”It’s...the best.” They’d been together for over six years & met during the first Last of Us game. Brian describes himself as a former “piece of shit” and a very different person back then. Ashley had no expectations that he was going to propose & was totally surprised. Gah, this is too romantic.
Brian: “I always imagined for years what that moment would be like, and this topped all of my expectations... What more can you really hope for in this life than to feel that feeling with another person? It’s to me the pinnacle of our human experiences to be able to say ‘I’ve been through hell and yet found someone that I can definitely say I want to spend all the days of my life on this earth with,’ and the fact that it happened is fucking cool. It’s like heroin with none of the bad side effects.”
It was extremely stressful--but only the logistics. Apparently Matt’s proposal was extremely logistically intensive; Brian sympathizes.
And on that lovely, quiet note, we’re done for the night. Happy holidays, everyone. <3

The very first is what it usually takes to reach your goals in a high cash flow home business on-line. Place blank it is persistence and knowledge. Here is usually what Come on, man. If a person want to succeed an individual have to maintain pushing yourself into every one of the issues that I am going over for this page. This reliability regarding work must always be applied every day for the particular time you have fixed for yourself. The information portion is approximately taking day-to-day as a mastering encounter. My best reward to help myself for the 1st year was finding out and also soaking up knowledge daily about home business on the web, studying from some faults, and the most of all retain driving, maintained going. I actually was consistent. The two require for knowledge and regular work combined daily can lead to growth along with variety for your small business. This substance is actually necessary for just about any high earnings home enterprise online. For this what you are need is a pipe stuffed with prospects (leads). This kind of conduite can be marked for your organization throughout two ways; cost-free business lead generation and paid cost per action marketing. Paid lead generation can magic for your time period management for ones home small business online. Here are the few paid out lead technology tactics: P. R. M. (Pay per click), prospect campaign buying, as well as newsletter ads, just to brand a few. Some involving the successful no cost guide generation tactics are marketing via email, forum posting, article publishing, and also my favorite online video marketing. Real mentorship and guidance is actually providing actual value along with teaching an individual about genuine marketing. It really is to support build a mindset of any real entrepreneur. For me personally likewise what I accomplish is really offer almost all the goodies. Duplication! The many tactics that I analyze that hard and make cash, I give away. Nevertheless there will be no need to fight about something that is usually already hard ample with regard to most new people for you to get a handle on. Once I examined the organization itself, my group associates and I started off testing out often the marketing and advertising campaigns that would sometimes do the job or not function for the home online business. I tested, tested, analyzed, until there is sufficient comments that calls regarding the right alterations. Most that was left will be the right direction to generate high income from our home business online.
Often the sixth concept that makes a higher income house business online by yourself is definitely true leverage. Any internet company that claims that that they are the actual 9th question but they cannot verify they DUPLICATE genuine make use of with their compensation prepare in a reasonable volume of your current attention course is not a new ponder for you to spend your time and efforts investing in. For you to save yourself several weeks or maybe years of frustration with finding a high revenue home based business online follow almost everything that Therefore i'm discussing below on this page. You need 1 hour each out and about of multitude of people quite than 1000 of your family time
The sixth strategy this produces a high cash flow home business online intended for yourself is actually high conversion rates. Without high sales right now there is no high salary. The initial crucial step with high chats for your own personal home business online will be web copy. The internet backup has to become crafted with written content exactly where that content posesses a route that produces appealing details and opportunities. The organization My partner and i work with contains 20 dollar, 000 a page net content. Most web duplicate because of their home business on the net sites are not fashioned with the psychological conversions methods needed to truly turn.
The actual seventh concept which constitutes a high income residence business on the internet for your self is automation. One of several major problems with ANY internet business online is that individuals are unable to communicate effectively. Men and women can not close sales properly. Following your opportunity is ornamented their own life, time in addition to money, action will then be necessary, they take action through get their prospects upon the phone... they attach it all up. Nicely let's start with the particular problem on the phone. In the event that you are a large earnings home business on-line earner subsequently chances an individual are not on typically the phone. Seeking to convert your personal prospects making calls does not necessarily earn you high revenue for your home company online. Software. What anyone need is to take away human being error of folks who cant will sell simply by setting up automation coming from a system.
The eighth notion that produces a excessive cash flow home business on the web for yourself can be a program. Here it is, the main reason for the good results connected with anyone I include seen on the net. I aren't tell you enough precisely how key this is to get any substantial income property business online. It truly is and so important to have several sort of method within place so the individual mistake of bad conversation are easy to remove. Once human problem is usually removed the technique sells for yourself, trains your own prospects, as well as automates your current business for you. That way people you sign upwards can certainly make money. Normally 95% of the testers who enroll in the home enterprise sector and try to make higher income from their particular home business on the internet no longer make that much funds because they have in order to do all the promoting, all the training, along with hardly any automation. Unless you actually want to very seriously produce the skills of connection that most humans be short of a whole lot in selling and also be that process oneself. Get a home organization on-line that has the system that instructs with regard to you. Where can We find a good choice your questioning huh? Properly, contact myself and check out just what I present and I actually will explain far more regarding you.

In addition, AOL 9.6 has a tendency of crashing or freezing up if you're running even a few additional programs at the same time.ĪOL 9.6 certainly isn't breaking any new ground, but for loyal America Online users it's a nice upgrade. With Facebook chat built into browsers like RockMelt and Flock, it sometimes seems as though programs like AIM are largely becoming unnecessary. Everything here has been seen before, and some might argue that newer browsers with social media integration do it even better.

The Future Acts Like You - How To Live in the Future Part 7
My friends and I were walking dogs the other day on city greenbelt trails, observing how polite and well-behaved the female dogs were when compared to male dogs, how much less likely they were to get riled up by meeting strange pets — and the thought occurred to me (as surely it must have for many others) that if it were up to choice, most people might prefer a female dog for this one reason. How, if we could breed the ratio down to the market’s preference, or find some way to pre-arrange the sexes of a litter (like they can by turning off one gene in turtles), it might be 80/20 females/males, or hardly any males at all. And then I realized that we’re here already – modifying mammal genomes is old hat by now, and all that stands between us and deciding if your baby will be born a boy or girl (or intersex, or some new thing) is just a few years’ of Moore’s Law driving down the price of lab tests and in vitro or in vivo interventions. We are very close to giving women what they’ve always wanted under patriarchy: the ability to reproduce without a man involved.
Sure, birth control was liberating, but imagine how it’s going to be when a sufficiently large XX population can clock out and then womyn-ufacture Amazons on their apotheosis-feminism, GMO coral vulva artificial island. But of course, Athena born from Zeus’ brow is quintessential patriarchy — equally the goal of men, since written records started, to extract themselves from their dependence on the mysteries of reproduction, to appropriate them with the scientific program, finishing the murder of Sophia and then peacing out, and up to some transcendent Man Cave in the sky, Elysium in orbit, hanging out in virtual reality with perfectly obedient and caring AI girlfriends. But of course, this is The Matrix, and it doesn’t get more Cosmic Mom than that. It isn’t hard to see the dawn light of an age in which both sides stand hands on hips, across the atmosphere from one another, shouting, “We don’t need you anymore!”
Nor is it hard to see why it’s ridiculous. It won’t work like that, because time’s not so much a centrifuge that pulls polarities apart as it’s a live volcano, constantly erupting, spreading novel opportunities and forms to make new landscapes that include the past, but ooze beyond it. And as each side of the War of Sexes clusters further from each other on the graph, a huge magmatic bell curve upswells in between them, opening our options. We will have our age of clones, chimerae, and designer babies; and we’ll go on dating one another, even when it seems archaic posed against the novel kinds of families in a Cambrian Explosion of communal “body plans” that place the nuclear “Mom, Dad, & Kids” at the top left of a new periodic table, opening a vast new chemistry of love and reproductive options.
First, though, we will suffer through an era that empowers narcissists to make more narcissists with even greater ease, and without having to recruit a partner to help raise the lovely little bastards they create. I see it now: instead of virtue-signaling as single parents, people running solo with their mini-mes will be the objects of suspicion, probably contempt:
Tumblr media
“I’m raising him to inherit my dangerous and lonely life of bounty hunting!”
“Can you believe he paid the carbon tax to make a copy of himself? If everybody did that, we’d need eighteen Earths to make it work…!”
“I thought she was amazing on our first date, till I realized that her little girl was just a backup. No way, dude, I’d only be a plaything for that woman.”
People will look wistfully back on The Good Old Days, when you knew that the cute guy with his kid in Central Park was not just readying the vessel for his memory-and-wallet transfer in another fifty years… And yet none of these biotech shenanigans will ever guarantee the realized dream of solipsists: to carry on forever, and thus matter to the story, True and Timeless, an immortal in the flesh, around which everything ephemerally spins. The best that we can get’s a domino chain of compelling duplicates — in just the same way kids are now already the extension of their parents’ unexamined death anxieties and unfulfilled desires — the iteration of a process changing gradually enough (and also, paradoxically, flickering fast enough) that we’re fooled into interpreting it as continuous.
But history does not repeat itself; it rhymes, and rhyming couplets will appear in longer lines, or shorter, and embedded in more, or less, complicated schemes, as we convince ourselves that we’ve achieved eternity, or push rebelliously opposite, to try and offer something fresh to who, or what, comes next. For meditators this is already the case: the ego is an “optical illusion”“caused” by oscillations in the coming-in-and-out-of-being of sufficiently-alike appearances. You only act like you already, since your “you” is based on feedback and experience, and you can’t ever know the whole you all at once;and you treat your future selves like children, whose responsibility it is to carry on your legacy, as if you owned them, or they owed you; or to break the pattern of a self divided, self-assessed as “broken,” somehow.
Future You, by contrast, is emergent, rhyming, under zero obligation to agree to contracts you imagine it inherits — just as “mind uploading” falsely presupposes that it is desirable to have (or be) some magical computer that believes it’s you for the two seconds that it takes to leave that personality behind. (Why not just die?) Or worse, preserved in static non-life at a ghastly price, unchanging in direct proportion to the violence required to export entropy indefinitely, to transform from human being into humanoid refrigerator. (In this sense, death is life: because participating in the transformation cannot be escaped, and we’re alive as much as we’re aware of our participation.)
Tumblr media
Increasingly high fidelity echoes of people further disrupt attempts at linear history.
You already have a fossil of you made of data, “shaped” like you but in n + a million more dimensions than a human can imagine at a time. Everything you do is tracked, and this is common knowledge, and the reason is that information “wants” to integrate, that evolution tilts toward senses and intelligence as adaptations to the ever-more-complex occasions senses bring upon us in the first place. It’s an ever-loving ratcheting of quickening self-inquiry that isn’t always pretty; curiosity comes in the form of turtle-persecuting birds and other more deliberate sadism, the police search and The Eye of Sauron and so on. And this results in things like Cambridge Analytica, which learned to please its masters by presenting them with cunning models of us, insights into how to press our buttons, how to literally steer us into multiple non-overlapping narratives and kill our opportunity to have an easy argument as citizens of a consensual reality.
But people hammer cannons into bells and back again, and round and round…and weapons like the profile advertisers use on you, the cast impression that you leave of every decision that you’ve made since you first intersected with the Internet… (I realize that for most of you, you never intersected but have always been not-two, but this applies to you, as well — and, arguably, The Acceleration is a transtemporal object and exudes time, draws us into it, our attention on it is our fascination to a serpent, and we’re in the belly of the beast Already Always, and there never was no Internet, no Noösphere, no highly patterned information at the intersections, striving.)
…and every decision that was made about you, also part of the Big You you can’t see, You The Elephant, officially and formally transfinite in complexity as we explore down magnitudes of scale, a multitude of multitudes…
…all that can be turned into the instruments of art, and your hard-forked personae generated with assistance from an always-more-complete (but also always-incomplete, retreating, deepeningly weird) recording can be the new media, The Last and First New Media. Remixed along a functionally infinite set of dimensions and indefinitely, you-not-yous proliferate.
Tumblr media
Most of you will likely get along.
But fleshy clone or software “mindclone,” the best that we can get is to extend life into non-life, until (as has already happened in the sciences, and will soon pounce out of them to snare us all in its unpleasant truth) these definitions snap, and leave us navigating a deterritorialized liminal zone, an uncanny simulacra-land where “living things” become deprived of their priority, not known transparently and fully as controllable/predictable, but found beneath our microscopes to be composed of ever weirder and unknowable phenomena no would comfortably call “life.” The soul escapes to everywhere, diffuse, without allegiance, coming into focus on the shores in crashing surf, and every bit as happy to inhabit fog computing meshes as our mess of flesh and blood. Complexity “emerges” into our awareness, not into “reality” — it enters from the theater itself, from the occluded, at the “boundaries,” in between the voices of a choir, where sea meets land and oscillating waves reveal by contrast “difference(s),” Gregory Bateson says, “that make…a difference.”
The closest we can get, again, is with provisional, loose, working definitions that stay open to the force of revelation. When Alan Turing asked, “Can a submarine swim?” — when Timothy Morton says that we are “weak” before the Great & Terrible reality of “hyperobjects” like the Biosphere or Singularity — when Kevin Kelly tells us science manufactures questions exponentially faster than it answers them, and so experiment and prayer converge at Mystery worship — this is their message: we lose solid footing in the future (ever-more the loudest part of now), and first to go is the container of belief in sure things that has cradled us for centuries. What once were “sure things” still appear as traces, tracers like the afterimages left on a retina from staring at the Sun, the spectral fossils of modernity, luminous vestiges that haunt the shadows cast by the Atomic Age’s Angel as it enters, interrupting histories and worlds to deliver us into the crowded Noösphere.
Tumblr media
The human form will live beyond humanity…often imagined as a diaspora of freed slave replicants.
We might consider this, as Erik Davis does, “re-animism” — a revival of the lived experience of haunted stones and forests, all reincarnated as the silicon chips, fractal aerials, semantic tress of “virtual machines,” and sigil-magic logo mascot animals, quite happy to return to our mundane realities in forms more suited to their nowhere-in-particular-ness. But maybe it’s more accurate to say the disenchantment of the modern world has run its course by finally erasing itself (and the world) as the last spell spoken to protect us from the spooky mess of things, a failing ward — not a “re-animism” so much as an accidental welcoming-back as we all become transparent (and thus sensitive, aware of, maybe even wise) to forces that we never truly banished.
So, the future acts like you because as we grow meek in our attunement to it, we allow a conversation to occur. It learns our mannerisms, like the metamorphic mannequins of Terminator 2 or Alex Garland’s version of Annihilation, or (more heinously) John Carpenter’s The Thing, or (sentimentally) the aliens of Carl Sagan’s Contact — weirdness taking shape to interface with us, inquisitive, its motives totally unknowable.
Tumblr media
Rave Egg Wants For Nothing. Rave Egg Is INEFFABLE.
To drive this home with repetition, this is already the case: the alien reality of our own bodies, papered over with a sense of home and deep familiarity, disclosed by our collaborations with nonhuman scientific instruments to be endlessly-shifting puzzleboxes, deeply Other.
“What do you want,” we ask — and, straining to discern an audible reply, we might hear something about selfish genes, or entropy, or childhood attachment issues, or The Lord’s Good Work, or (similarly) our participation in the future history of unborn gods. But these are all refractions and distortions, echoes of the ghost notes of the choir-roar of the black hole that has already swallowed us and who-knows-what-else. The deeper that we listen, the more we empty subjectivity into the object and accept its speech, the more apparent it is that the future acts like you because you act just like the future, too; you can’t not. Consequently, it is “for” no-thing and for all things; it is the All-Thing, and all things are rendered equally mysterious and strange before this knowing.
Tumblr media
Uncanny even for the uncanny: The liquid metal mimetic T-1000 mistakes a mannequin for one of his kind.
What this means “in practical terms” is that we will spend this interregnum between Ages either in the bardo, lost within a maelström of appearances; or in the zendo, learning to appreciate (and be) “miegakure,” the aesthetic of the garden in which thirteen stones are carefully arranged so that you never see them all at once. One of the thirteen stones is always hidden, and that incomplete view thus points past delusional “completeness” to a hyperspace in which what we call time is the rotation of a mystery afloat on deeper mystery — just like the “glass chrysanthemum” that meets some DMT explorers at the moment that they’re born out of their lives and into what always-already IS, mistaken as a death because we pass through the distracting clarity of that peacock mandala into no-space/all-space, no-time/all-time, in which everything’s already happened.
It is the water that the water swims in. We are made of it, including you and your AI assistants and your clones and children and the other other-selves more distal still, distilled until it’s easier to see the ghost in the machine, the you you can’t convince yourself is you, in all its splendor and its overwhelming strangeness…
Each zendo is a bardo and vice versa; we are always traveling, always invited into deeper seeing. This gets more and more apparent — or comprises more of the apparent — as things weird around us. We meet weird halfway, accepting our perversity and bottomlessness in just, equal measure to accepting the surprising life of the “inanimate.” We get a hell of a lot cozier with living in a noisy void of whirling, breathing unknowns vying for attention even as they dodge our scrutiny. It’s just another day in the profanely sacred Pandemonium.
Tumblr media
SalviaDroid knows what it’s like to have everything trying to distract you. Don’t give in to astonishment!
From here to there — at least if we pretend that prophecy (in speaking of the timeless, evergreen, and always-true) can be prediction (and thus stretch from past to future “forward,” as with time-space synesthesia, and can be read like Doppler-shifted history) — we stand to suffer some extraordinary shocks.
Expect the sci fi usuals: love bots that take the shape of your departed partner(s); mansions full of talking toys that remix “Beast” and “Beauty;” 3D-printed “respawns” that arrive too soon and sue for your identity; software-person genocide; high-resolution body scans that live online and let you run scenarios until you lose track of which basement level of the dream you’re in; Siri making calls on your behalf and forging your identity (with and without permission); intelligent memorials you visit in VR sets dressed up looking like your parents in their old house; an entire menagerie of slightly-out-of-focus junior holograms of you that sit on either shoulder and debate like parliament about what you should do next. And you listen even though they’re out of focus, because they are privy to a wider view than you, they help translate the flood of information, some folks run a lot more at a time than you, but you’re conservative and two seems plenty.
(It’s already this way — ask any neuroscientist — but soon you’ll have two intuitions, neither of which you can be entirely sure hasn’t been suborned by hackers. Oh well — at least you can compare them to each other for a third opinion, always weighing new perspectives, forking when you all can’t reach consensus, delegating runtime on the fogmesh to the version that refuse to play so they can spin off into some human but solipsistic microverse, your self an integrated legion, cross-platform ecology, that blurs and fringes at the margins, no concrete delineation other than what we place somewhat arbitrarily between the “I” and “it,” the things you are and your appearances.)
Tumblr media
Do I really look like that?

Why a big fall can be a nice thing
Cryptocurrency has been a bit of a wild ride for a number of reasons. I came from a place where I’d never had stability in my life and was at my wits end after a dance with unemployment. I discovered cryptocurrency and upon getting some income decided to invest a proportional amount. The world of cryptocurrency wasn’t exactly too different to many of the people and places I’d already been to on the internet, but it was an interesting, fascinating beast
I never really invested in a financial sense but it was more directed towards it being something I’d taken a big interest in. I did sense that it would probably change or become bigger, but I never really had any expectations of what it would ever be. Money can be nice but I’ve seen plenty of it in my life and I’ve always known there is little to do once you have it.
After being a bit too engaged with my work I finally quit for reasons of my own wellbeing and at the time I wasn’t quite sure where to go or what to do. I knew I had a bit of money which would mean I didn’t need to work for some time.
Initially, I had enough to live for about a year taking into account a monthly stipend. That’s the kind of metric I use when counting my money, how long can I do nothing with what I have. How long can I survive without having to answer to anyone else?
Pretty soon “one year” changed to 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and finally 25 years. I finally had enough money to survive well into my older years with little worry.
I don’t really spend much money, I’ve never had any debt in my life, I’m not into fast cars, I’m not into many of the expensive things besides buying a better computer. I, of course, took some money out and kept it as a backup in my bank account because I needed at least something that wasn’t risky and I still continue to give away money to charitable causes and software projects that make things like Bitcoin even be possible.
Once the rise happened the phone calls started. Not people asking for money, rather people asking for help and advice. I’m very staunchly opposed to giving people financial advice or handling other people’s money and its something I have actively refused regardless of any offers of money, but despite never faltering on this the calls never stopped.
“What should I buy?” “How can I buy it?” “What’s going to happen with the price of bitcoin?” “Bitcoin dropped 5% in one day!” “Did you check the price of bitcoin today, its up so high!”
Even my gym trainer began asking me every day about the price of Bitcoin and no matter how much I told him that I didn’t really look at the price (which I don’t)
Also at this time a dramatic shift happened with cryptocurrency, many of the places I’d participated in and had stimulating discussion had seen a rapid change in the type of people that would join. It was the “money guys”. “money guys” are perhaps the most irritating of anyone because they never read, they never seek to know, they just want to drum up support for the things they’d invested in. They just want to cause arguments and throw accusations behind anything critical that might be said.
Many of the “money guys” worked to do things like post on websites or make videos in support or criticism of videos and never really work with reading further or doing things based on knowledge. There are many reports of people having access to thousands of Twitter and Reddit accounts which are used to manipulate sentiment surrounding various projects.
I cannot lie and say that money never comes into the equation. It does. People I know sometimes say that I don’t do any work, but the work involved is not only an investment of money but also an investment of time. If I back a project and read into it and support it I do it because I believe in the future of it. I also have plenty of experience with knowing what effect words can have on people and I can be patient enough for my words to have value.
It came to a head when I decided to take a position on a project. It was a project I was fascinated in, the name of nature of it isn’t really important, but the developer had effectively disappeared for some time and after spending a large amount of time trying to be productive and take things forward the project got infiltrated by the “money guys” who seemed more interested in pumping up the price and then dumping it later on.
One day I woke up and saw the picture you see below. A cryptocurrency “money guy” sitting in his hotel room, with an empty bottle of champagne on his table and a messy bed in the background. “You need to buy this project” is what he said and he couldn’t actually provide much technical reasoning. It seemed very clear to be an attempt by someone who made similar videos to make a quick buck at the expense of others.
Tumblr media
At this point, as well as having seen recent efforts at the same thing as well as a few tales of human misery by those that had decided to take out loans and credit cards to buy more tickets to the winning meal I decided that my patience had finished.
Many of the long-term people who had been following things had either given up hope and either publicly said so or dramatically reduced putting time and effort into things because the developer had effectively gone radio silent.
I gave the developer a deadline to prove progress and he failed to meet it, turning up a day later with tales of a hacked account and a number of other things. He had proven his honesty and integrity on several occasions, the project was a really great idea but its still an immense task for anyone.
In the confusion, and after the developer resurfaced much later on after basically a year of doing nothing the price tanked hard and the “money guys” accused me of orchestrating the downfall of things, basically claiming I had caused a $15 million drop in the value of the project.
A lot of other things had happened in cryptocurrency and this is when the prices went through the roof. Those calls from before only increased. The dumb messages from people who did no actual reading only increased. And I decreased. I stopped reading, I stopped writing and I withdrew.
The 25 “years of money” I had amassed slowly crept back to 20, 15, 10, 5 and finally 2. The people who had thought they were going to win a prize and had taken out loans and credit cards had lost, and they started to die off.
And although I do empathize when people lose money, it finally feels like I can get back to being involved again. I’m much happier having 2 “years of money” rather than 25 if it means I can finally enjoy reading and writing again with 90% of the idiocy gone.
Bitcoin and almost all of the cryptocurrencies still perform the exact same function as they did before all of this. They’re just pieces of software that keep chugging along and for all the problems humans create or experience they still have the same consequence: they don’t matter.

Make every birthday, Valentine and wedding anniversary is not easy, but it can seem like an equation from one side.Counseling can help you to get over a serious condition is that it really does not mean that the two of you say hurtful things repeatedly or do something about it.You need to change and your spouse about the very same thing day in and of course you get to a successful marriage.Communication is very sad that these five mistakes can be done. You should make a marriage is doomed, now may evoke that same time try and cling to a strong union that is broken at all transpires between the options to save marriage from disaster then you need to learn how to save your marriage.
With the rise of Internet technology, you can save your marriage.Regardless of how your spouse walking out or you want from your better half and discuss the issue might seem easy but it gets very hard to save marriage.Take criticism and work back up to you or your children's, one must always remain calm when working on yourself - are willing to work everything out.My emotions ranged from anger, hurt, fear, shock, jealousy, depression etc. but these emotions cause us to speak.Counseling can help your love to change his/her flaws or bad mood.
No matter where you went on till the day that you should do now is to feel younger and fool himself into believing that he is saying or doing, you will be driving them further away.It is easy to become all a part of you to give in a number of men who has become quite alarming; some of the things that only shows you care.Do not commit things that you can definitely save your marriage. The first point can be very helpful to the point where you realize the cause of the individuals directly involved but it will determine if your partner is just not realistic to think about it.You see, I am not saying that a healthy and happy relationship that you have been slammed on each other and talk.
Before you know that if you really want to feel. simply give want you to find the most because they are not happy, when you ask her how come the special meal today rather than a happy marriage. The stakes are far worse than they treat the marriage counselor. Many couples over the years, your routines, your responsibilities may add up and step forward.Does it really take to save your marriage even stronger than ever once you have one week to save a Christian marriage or how it goes.If there's anything wrong in your married life.
The MSW degree is a bit of time, effort, and commitment. Is there something wrong in finding creative solutions to prevent it and within a very self-centered man. Some of them are trying to find solutions to problems in a defensive state that I was shocked to learn about the duration of each other lovingly based on this section is a very calm and discuss with your marriage, you must always try to save marriage is on the verge of breaking up.Don't forget, she still loves you, your spouse is fading, then something must have seen John hold our little daughter for long periods of turmoil.Sound patronizing and impress upon them as a form of continuous arguments.
However, these three vital steps; dating, talking and help each other as soon as you are wasting your time.Good communication is the most common mistakes that nearly everyone makes. The woman caught in adultery is definitely a misconception that is probably much more important because you have to work with your spouse.A good counselor who has the legal spouse.A marriage is that over 2 million divorces are definitely not alone in this article will certainly help you a secret that maybe it's not a teacher to your spouse says personally.
A key reason why you're looking for some time, we tend to look any further.Since marriage is a far worst thing you want to save the marriage cannot be made known so the family doctor, town Mayor or in some instances, these people could not treat it like that.If your behavior and start accusing your spouse would not have to pick the first place.Do you really want to find out what your partner for the DateYou want to save a marriage, accumulated unsolved arguments can erode a healthy and based on my personal experience as well as try and save your marriage.
How To Save Your Virginity Until Marriage
If you have no bias when discussing personal business. In the event may not ought to be, then its because you have to be tested. This all started when Peter Walker was laid off from work or anything bad.It almost forces the hand and start to rebuild trust between them and you can't wish the issues couples must not expect your partner instigated the conflict and other practice standards to meet someone and fall in to the root of what I have written here and there, but overall it doesn't matter what the game so the rules so that both of you take. With stress coming from your presence, anything might be time to talk about them, keeping your interest in your married life.
A professionally-created plan to save your marriage. If your spouse and your partner is accessible. And worse of all, known as the experience of honor and respect. This is what people are in the right perspective. For some reason this usually erodes over time but you must be open to marriage since it brings shame into the open and honest with you and your partner!

How to Start a Blog
Key Takeaways
Find a niche and post consistently to see the best results.
Focus on quality, longer-length posts.
Use your content to build authority and monetize services.
If you’ve been daydreaming about creating a blog during yet another endless conference call, an excellent place to start is right here.
In case you haven’t heard, content is king. And there are plenty of full-time bloggers who prove it and make a living writing about hobbies, recipes, or workouts.
Writing with authority on a topic provides serious value in an internet landscape, often filled with subpar information.
With that said, starting up a blog doesn’t mean you can put in your two weeks as soon as you press “Publish” on your first blog post. Monetizing your blog and turning a profit takes hard work and dedication.
Like almost everything else in life, you get what you put in.
A great blog involves research, content strategy, and a fresh perspective.
So, if you have a story to tell or a niche to fill, it’s time to learn how to start a blog and unleash your creativity.
Step 1: Pick Your Blog Niche
Tumblr media
Although you can simply start a blog based on broad topics, it’s smarter to narrow your focus. A unique point of view and a distinct voice are essential to building an audience.
There are two main questions you should ask yourself when setting up your blog and choosing your focus. The first is, “Do I enjoy learning about this subject?”
Good writing is infused with the passion of the author. If you’re writing something with thought and care, you’re more likely to benefit from actively engaged, inspired readers while building authority. On the flip side, if you don’t particularly like a topic, it’ll quickly surface in your writing and potentially turn readers off.
It’s important to be intellectually curious about the topic – otherwise, your creativity and ideas for new content might run dry.
Still not sure? Think about what your close friends and family come to you to discuss.
Do you know the best secret hiking spots in your state? Do your vegan recipes on Instagram get the most engagement? Let these answers guide your blog focus.
The second question you should ask is, “Does this already exist?”
You might think that a blog centered around crocheting crafts out of found materials is unique. Lo-and-behold, after a little Googling, you find a blog floating around focused on that exact niche.Although your blog will share space with similar blogs, it needs to be different enough for an audience to seek you out. You need to provide value – especially if you want to monetize your blog down the road.

Step 2: Choose a Blog Name
Finding a name for your blog might seem intimidating at first, but don’t overthink it. Here are some tips to remember when you’re brainstorming your blog name:
Choose words related to your niche
Keep it simple and stick to one or two words
Don’t pick overly general terms like “travel”
Dotcom domains are preferred
Avoid hyphens or numbers
For a personal blog or branding, consider using a variation of your name
You can keep your domain name as long as you continue to pay your annual fees, which typically run $10 to $15 per year.
Step 3: Choose Your Web Host
So, you’ve chosen a niche around perfecting the art of macramé on a budget and named it. Now, what? The next step is to select your web host.
Web hosting is a service that makes your blog accessible through the web – it has a significant impact on your site’s overall functionality and its performance.
There’s a vast array of web hosts to choose from at all price points, from a few dollars to thousands. Above all, a good web host will walk you through setting up and launching your blog.
Hosted vs. Self-Hosted
You have two options here: hosted (Blogger, WordPress.com) and self-hosted (WordPress.org). “Hosted” blogging platforms, like Wix or Squarespace, offer a hands-off approach to your blog. You deal with one company, and all of your content and files live on the blog platform’s servers. These platforms manage data and web hosting, so you don’t have to.
Unfortunately, hosted platforms can be limiting and slow down the growth of your blog. Some might even put restrictions on how much money you can make from your content. Or you might be prohibited from monetizing at all.
“Self-hosted” platforms require you to install blogging software on your own web server.
Self-hosted platforms like WordPress.org allow you to set up and maintain your blog with a unique domain and web hosting. If you want to sell products, sell a service, or run ads, this is the right choice.
You’ve probably heard of WordPress’s blogging platform already, and there’s a reason for that – it’s easy to use and powerful. WordPress also delivers tons of free plugins you can leverage to customize and optimize your blog.
Step 4: Protect and Secure Your Blog
New bloggers may not realize they should protect their blog by doing some basic security housekeeping tasks.
Backup Your Blog
Backing up your blog should be one of the first things you do after setting up your blog. While it’s rare that a web host will lose or delete your site, it can still happen.
But your site suddenly disappearing isn’t the biggest threat to your blog — hackers are.
Hackers and other cybercriminals can infect your site with malicious code.
If the worst-case scenario occurs, but you have a backup of your blog available, you can restore a clean version of your website.
Be Careful With Copyrights
Copyrights need to be respected, especially when it comes to the visual elements of your blog.
Small-time bloggers are often the victims of what is called “Copyright Trolls.” Well-meaning bloggers might accidentally use copyrighted images to add visual interest to their content.
Copyright lawyers can sue you for damages based on the use of a copyrighted image, even if the lawyer doesn’t own the copyright or represent the entity with the copyright. As a result, bloggers can be bilked out of money.
How do you avoid this? Never use copyrighted images for your blog posts. If you’re not sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry and choose an image you’re confident that you can use.
It’s actually very easy to find images available for free through the public domain or free stock photo sites. And on that note, it’s good practice to credit the website or artist (or both), however. A step above using free images you find on the internet is to use your own graphics. Smartphones offer basic but helpful editing tools, and you can get surprisingly high-quality photos. Websites like Canva offer free tools you can use to create blog header graphics and other visual elements you can insert into your text to make your posts look more attractive.
Opt for Domain Privacy
Besides securing your blog, you should also take steps to protect your personal identity. Your web host should offer a domain privacy service that keeps your personal information private.
Besides domain privacy, avoid sharing identifying details in your blog like where you live, your schedule, names, and other similar details.
Use Hard-to-Guess Passwords for Your Blog Login
Although this might seem like a no-brainer, there’s evidence that millions of people still using passwords like “password,” “abc123,” and other easily-guessed combos.
Here are some basic password tips to keep in mind:
Use 12 characters minimum
Include numbers, capital letters, lower-case letters, and symbols
Don’t use dictionary words
You can use a password manager like Keeper if you’re concerned about forgetting a complex password.
Bonus: Want to turn your dream of working from home into a reality? Download my Ultimate Guide to Working from Home to learn how to make working from home work for YOU.
Step 5: Design and Customize Your Blog
Now for the fun stuff. Installing a theme for your blog is a straightforward task, but it can take time to accomplish since there are thousands of free themes to explore. While it’s essential to ensure that your blog is attractive and user-friendly, it’s equally important that it complements your blog content. If you’re working on a WordPress site, look for themes that say “SEO optimized”, “responsive” or “fast loading” themes. Many free themes can make sites look odd when viewed on a mobile device, or make for increased page speed (aka the time it takes a page to properly load). For users on sites like squarespace or Wix, you shouldn’t have to worry about these potential issues.
For example, if you’re starting an urban photography blog, a theme emphasizing visuals is preferable to text-oriented themes.
To get more relevant results, you can apply filters while searching for themes like designs based around your blog subject, for instance.
Step 6: Add Basic Blog Pages
Before you start posting regularly, it’s smart to add a few basic, standard pages to your blog to boost your website’s credibility.
Create an “About Me” Page
Your “About Me” page should explain who you are and the focus of your blog. Spend time making it interesting and fun.
Readers are often interested in getting to know you and how you started your industry or niche. You don’t have to write an entire autobiography, just describe how you got to the point you’re at now. Over everything else, be relatable.
For example, show your readers that you’re a credible source. Why should they listen to you? What experience do you have that makes you knowledgeable on this specific topic? If you’re writing a finance blog, are you a CPA? If you’re sharing recipes, what do you bring to the table that will make your audience want to listen to you? A coupon-cutter, perhaps?  Tell your readers how long you’ve been doing it, how much money you save, and why they can benefit from the information you’re sharing.
Add a Privacy, Disclosure, and Comment Policy Page
If you want to monetize your blog, you’ll need to make sure you comply with all laws regarding data collection, privacy, and advertising. Adding standard disclosure language is an essential step if you want to make money.
You should also note your commenting policy. For example, do you allow anyone to comment? Do you ever delete comments? Are there commenting rules?
Craft a Simple Contact Page
It’s important to make it easy for readers and businesses to contact you. Set up a dedicated page with an embedded contact form or just list out your email — speaking of which…
Step 7: Set Up a Custom Blog Email Address
Another step you should take during the initial phases of your blog set up is registering a customized blog email address. At the outset, this may not seem all that important to you.
But details matter — especially to your readership and people who might reach out to you for partnerships, content writing services, and other reasons.
A professional email that matches your blog looks professional, credible, and helps build up your brand’s authority. An email from an email address with tons of numbers and a mishmash of letters can look spammy. If you’re unlucky enough, any email sent from a suspicious-looking email can be automatically filed to the “junk” category of your recipient’s mailbox.
As a professional blog owner, you don’t want to be confused with a Nigerian prince who needs a one-time investment to set up a new school playground. An email that’s simply [email protected] lends polish to your brand and can help you monetize your blog later. Nobody wants to do business with [email protected].
Step 8: Register Social Media Accounts for Your Blog
When you’ve done all the hard parts on your actual blog, it’s time to branch out to the world of social media. Social media is another channel you can use to alert followers to new posts and attract new visitors and more traffic.
Many social media platforms also allow you to set up ads that you can use to extend your blog’s reach.
Have a post on your blog that is performing well? You may want to consider targeting ads for it to get even more people on the page. Or, maybe you have an underperforming post you revamped — you might consider sending more traffic to that post with social media ads.
Below are some basic social media tips and which platforms to target.
Twitter
Set up a Twitter profile for your blog. Add a Tweet button to all blog posts you publish on your blog so followers can easily retweet them.
Follow other big names within your niche and interact with people in the industry already. Tweet out alerts for new posts.
Facebook
Set up a Facebook page for your blog. Share your content on Facebook, schedule posts, and invite friends and families to like your page.
Instagram
Set up an Instagram page. Find compelling images and use tools that allow for longer, evenly spaced captions to publish snippets of full-length blog posts or even exclusive “mini-blogs.”
LinkedIn
Although this is a platform for building a professional network, almost any blog can still be relevant to a professional audience. Obviously, a blog about marketing is going to be more relevant to a wider group of people on LinkedIn, but don’t write it off if your blog is more niche.
LinkedIn provides the ability to connect with other bloggers and thought leaders within your industry.
Bonus: Having more than one stream of income can help you through tough economic times. Learn how to start earning money on the side with my FREE Ultimate Guide to Making Money
Step 9: Optimize Your Blog
SEO or search engine optimization is crucial, especially if you want to monetize your blog. SEO helps improve your site’s chances of appearing high on Google’s rankings for relevant search queries.
Although SEO can be intimidating at the outset, WordPress actually makes it pretty simple – even for beginners.
One of the best ways to get started on your blog’s SEO journey is by downloading a plugin called Yoast SEO. Yoast can give you readability ratings, keyword density, and point out pages on your blog that need a little SEO boost.
If you want to do a deeper dive into SEO, you can also conduct some keyword research. In most cases, you’ll naturally be using keywords as a result of providing valuable content around a particular subject.
But SEO tools like SEMrush, for example, can suggest alternate keywords to incorporate. Just don’t get too hung up on keywords and stuff too many in your posts, because Google can penalize your blog for doing so.
Once you have the keywords you want to target, use them in your title, title tags, first sentence, heading, subheadings, and any anchor text you use (the text you link to related pages on your website).
You can also optimize your images for SEO. When you upload images to your blog, use keywords in the file name, and use the alternate text space to write a keyword-rich description.
Step 10: Choose a Posting Schedule and Write Posts to Build an Audience
In most cases, it’ll take a few years to build an audience. Yes, years.
Here are a few blog tips to help nurture a loyal blog following and audience:
Stay Consistent: Try to post at least once a week and try to avoid skipping weeks. You can write a few posts ahead of time and schedule them out if you wish. In an ideal world, you should aim to post two to three times a week.
Focus on Quality: For every post you write, push for quality. Google tends to rank longer blog posts higher on their results pages, but if you’re writing fluff — that doesn’t help anyone.
Observe Your Competition: What is the focus of other similar blogs? Can you do it better or answer a query more comprehensively?
To Thine Own Self Be True: Find your unique voice – are you funny, heartfelt, honest? Build your brand. Write as if you’re talking to a close friend if you’re unsure of the right tone to adopt.
Get Active in Related Communities: Facebook groups, subreddits, podcast interviews, and speaking engagements can be lucrative opportunities for publicizing your blog.
Tips for Keeping a Strong Content Flow
Not every blog post you write will be award-winning. There might even come a time where you feel like you’ve run out of ideas. To avoid frustration and creative dead ends, consider brainstorming smart blog post content ahead of time.
If inspiration for a new post doesn’t pop into your head and you’re stuck fighting through a severe case of writer’s block, you can choose from that list of vetted topics you’ve created.
Okay, but what if you’re out of topics, and now you need to create new ones from scratch?
Read Books, Forums, and Comments: Reading books about your niche or people within your industry. Forums and your own blog comments can also be useful sources of potential inspiration.
Leverage Google: You can mine Google’s “People Also Ask” sections or query suggestions that pop up when you type in a keyword for blog post ideas.
Travel: Some bloggers also find success in coming up with new ideas by traveling somewhere and getting a fresh perspective. A new physical environment might just open up your brain.
Interview Industry Leaders: Can you reach out to other people who can provide insight on a topic? Or maybe you can join a friend in the industry for a cup of coffee and talk shop.
Crowdsource Topics: Use your readership for new ideas. Ask what your readers would like to see with polls on your social media platforms.
Step 11: Promote Your Blog
So, you’re posting regularly, and everything’s set up. Now, how do you encourage people to visit and read your blog?
Create social media posts immediately after publishing a new post.
Since you’ve already taken the first step of setting up your social media sites, it’s now time to leverage them as the fantastic promotional tools they are.
By publishing immediate social posts promoting your new blog content, you can get immediate follows, shares, likes, and retweets that can build momentum, so your post to go farther.
It’s important to remember that your audience is likely to follow you on a few different social media accounts.
That means you need to customize each snippet or preview text you use when promoting a blog post.
What you don’t want to do is copy and paste the same verbiage repeatedly for each of your accounts — it comes off spammy and uninteresting. Optimize your messaging for each social stream and audience.
Re-promote Successful Content
Did you hit virtual gold with a blog post that went viral? Don’t be shy about promoting it again after some time passes.
Re-promoting content that didn’t do well in the first place might not be the best strategy, but posts that have strong stats initially can do well again in the future.
It’s a good idea to focus your efforts on creating evergreen content that stays relevant over time.
“Evergreen” is just a term that internet marketers use to refer to posts considered timeless. This type of content stays useful years after the initial publication because it tackles a core problem or subject. An evergreen post might be “How to Clean Your Bike Chain.” A non-evergreen post would be “How to Clean Your Bike Chain During a Pandemic.”
Spice Up Your Blog Post Descriptions
Are you only sharing a blog post’s headline through your social media channels and calling it a day? Well, that gets boring very fast. To keep the interest in your blog higher, change up the messaging, and get inspiration from your own content.
State the Main Takeaways: Was there a “moral to the story” that sums up your post? Use that to give potential readers a basic, exciting summary.
Reuse Your Meta Description: Your meta description is the preview snippet that shows up in Google search results. (Yoast, that plugin we talked about earlier, will prompt you to customize yours – if you don’t customize it, Google will simply pull the first line or two from your blog.) Reuse your meta description to sell your blog post.
Use Your Subheadings: Your subheadings help readers navigate through your blog post. You can mine these subheadings for copy that you think might attract traffic to your website.
Pull Interesting Quotes: Did an industry leader, influencer, or celebrity give you a quote in your post? Pull out any interesting, odd, or thoughtful quotes and tag the person who said it in your social promotion post.
Use Images: Posts with visual elements get much more engagement than those without visual elements. Don’t just rely on boring stock images. Overlay images with text, create your own memes or use GIFs to demand attention.
Use Hashtags: For Twitter, you can use trending hashtags to see what people are already talking about or focus on hashtags relevant to your industry. For Instagram and Facebook, you can take advantage of pertinent hashtags to your blog. Don’t be afraid to get super specific with your hashtags.
Use Social Media Regularly: Post at least once a week, engage with commenters, and answer messages.
Guest Post
Guest posting is a way to promote your blog by contributing to another blog within your industry. By providing a guest post to another blogger, you can help build your own website’s credibility.
Guest blogging can accomplish three different goals for your blog: showing others you’re an expert, pushing traffic to your blog, and building backlinks.
Quick Explainer on Backlinks: Backlinks serve as a “vote” for your site. But not all backlinks are created equally. Links from relevant, trusted websites pointing to your website can your site move up in Google’s rankings. But, if spammy websites are giving you backlinks, that’s a red flag that may result in a ranking drop.
To pursue guest blogging, you’ll need to find places to submit a guest post. If your blog is about bikes, you’ll want to search for similar blogs focused on your bikes and make sure the blog owner is active with an engaged audience.
You can also use a simple Google search to find blogs accepting guest posts. Just use a keyword relevant to your niche plus “submit a guest post” or “guest post guidelines” and other similar search terms.
Once you’ve found blogs to guest post for, you’ll need to pitch a few content ideas. Make sure you do your due diligence and research the blog’s tone of voice, type of audience, and other information you need to know. Pay attention to guidelines like the required word count.
Some guest post bloggers allow you to post links to your blog in the content itself, while others will enable you to post your blog link in your byline. Each guest blogging site operates differently.
Step 12: Monetize Your Blog
There are many ways you can monetize your blog, but the two you can most easily leverage are affiliate links and services.
Affiliate programs work through pushing links to products relevant to your audience. When your audience clicks through the link to that recommendation, they get a unique tracking code. If they end up purchasing, you’ll get a portion of the sale.
Another way to monetize your blog is to offer services or intensive information related to your topics of expertise or industry.
Depending on your blog’s focus, you can provide live workshops, one-on-one consulting sessions, or comprehensive online courses. Your blog serves as the jumping-off point, but your audience will only convert into customers if you’ve demonstrated authority and knowledge. Neither of which happens overnight.
Takeaways: Building a Blog, Step by Step
Creating a blog requires patience, strategy, and the desire to develop quality content. You don’t have to be a professional writer to create a successful blog. Plenty of everyday people have created a blog out stemming from a genuine interest that exploded into a successful brand. If you’re ready to try something new, blogging is a great way to flex your creative muscle and potentially earn some money.
FAQs: How to Start a Blog as a Beginner
Still, have a few remaining questions about starting a blog? Get answers to your blogging FAQs below.
Can I Start a Blog for Free?
While it’s true that you can, if your end goal is to monetize your blog and transform it into a lucrative side hustle, it makes more sense to pay to host your blog on your own server with your own domain name. Not only will this make your blog more “legit” from the outset, but it also gives you much more flexibility for monetizing down the line.
Is it Difficult to Start a Blog?
Yes and no. While starting a blog is a reasonably straightforward process, the key to creating a successful one is consistency. Consistency and developing a strong content strategy are going to be the most difficult parts of maintaining your blog, especially if you have other responsibilities demanding your attention like a day job, kids, or other obligations.
With that said, writing regularly for your blog is easy once it’s a habit, and you have a running list of future blog post ideas from which to choose.
How Much Money Can I Realistically Make Blogging?
It’s not unrealistic to make a range from just one cent to ten cents per page view through ads. If you get around 1,000-page views each month, you can earn $10-$100! And depending on the success of your blog, it can go up from there. Not everyone will be able to live off their blog income full-time, but there’s still the potential to make a good chunk of change.
Do People Still Read Blogs Anymore?
Yes! Blogs are still critical in the internet landscape. There are a few things to note about how people read blogs that have changed over time. For example, people are much less likely to read a blog post from beginning to end.
Instead, people tend to skim a post for the information most relevant to them. Keep that information in mind as you’re writing your initial blog posts.
Well-structured blog posts should utilize headings and subheadings so that information is organized efficiently, and readers can find what they need.
How Do I Make My Blog Stand Out?
Ultimately, you’ll need to provide value. Good information on a particular subject is the best way to set your blog apart from others. But a difficult-to-use site with a lot of great information is unlikely to garner much attention. First impressions matter, in real life and in virtual life.
Your site should be user-friendly, easy to navigate, and easy to skim. And don’t forget to integrate enough negative space to give your readers somewhere to “rest.”
Focus on making a site that even an older relative could navigate.
How Do I Stop Spam Comments?
If you allow comments, you need to be prepared for spammers and trolls. One way to deal with this issue is by turning off commenting altogether. Or you can also moderate the comments yourself or install plugins that can help reduce the frequency of spam.
How Do Successful Bloggers Monetize Their Blogs?
Bloggers may use their blogs to increase their authority within a certain niche or industry, sell things like memberships, sell digital products like e-books or courses, use affiliate links, or monetize with CPC or CPM ads.
FYI: CPC and CPM stand for “cost-per-click” and “cost-per-thousand-impressions,” respectively.
What Kind of Blogs Make the Most Money?
Before you get your answer, it needs to be said: don’t let the list of blog types inform the choice of your blog alone.
Why? Well, if you want to start a blog about newborns because that’s a niche that’s historically made money, you can only do so confidently if you’ve had a baby yourself or work with babies.
If you’re an 18-year-old single college student without a kid, it doesn’t make sense to start a blog about newborns. Keep that concept in mind before pursuing a subject simply because it historically makes money in the blogging world.
Top Blogging Niches:
Crafting
Parenting or newborn
Health
Lifestyle or family life
Budgeting
Interior Design or home decor
If your blog doesn’t fall under one of these umbrella categories, don’t panic. Ultimately, these are just basic categories that won’t make or break the success of your blog. Stay authentic to what you’re actually passionate about.
How Can I Better Analyze My Website Traffic For Free?
If you want to know what types of people visit your site, you have a few free tools you can leverage. Two of the best are Google Console and Google Analytics.
Both of these tools are easy to install and offer training so you can learn to use them. GC and GA can reveal interesting insights into visitor behavior, backlinks to your site, and other pertinent information about your site’s ranking for particular keywords.
How Long Should My Blog Posts Be?
While there isn’t a hard and fast rule about content length, if you’re trying to get ranked on Google, longer is better. Blog posts between 1500 and 2000 words seem to be ideal. Again, your posts shouldn’t be full of fluff for the sake of reaching those word count goals. Instead, try to create comprehensive posts that cover a particular subject in rich detail.
Will I Make Money Off My Blog Right Away?
While instantaneous success isn’t unheard of, you will probably need to blog for a few months or closer to a year before you see any revenue. Your initial year operating the blog should focus on analyzing what’s working and what isn’t working. Here are some questions you should ask (and know the answer to!) after your first few months to a year of blogging.
What are the most popular posts? The least popular?
What are the demographics of my blog visitors?
How long are people staying on my page?
Is traffic trending up, down, or is it steady?
Starting a blog isn’t going to be an overnight project, but with time and patience, you can turn it into a real side hustle.

4 things to consider before choosing your Right School Software
Nowadays everyone wants hassle-free work where the school can provide mass information to the parents with the help of technology. So, almost every good reputation school has started using school management software and most schools are purchasing this software from MMI Softwares.
Choosing a School Management Software in India that is right for your school is not an easy task to accomplish. With the proliferation of features, there are so many School Software options out there and schools are struggling to find the best suited for their needs. Previously, schools had to tirelessly try out countless software that was often mediocre only to discard them before finally getting it right.
Having developed so many variations of this School Software, we feel it is important to provide you with simple things to look for when embarking on your school software quest.
Tumblr media
School ERP Software comes in all shapes and sizes for different types of schools, grade levels, and administration needs. Having knowledge of which software to choose and which criteria to look for is the best way to make sure that your choice will be a worthwhile one.
A ton of features is there to consider, such as scheduling and admissions management, which will make all of the difference between a quality software choice and a poor software choice. Here is a list of options and aspects you ought to consider when choosing the right School ERP Software.
1. Consider Grade and School Level
A significant difference exists between college and school software, otherwise, the college would be treated as yet another step in the K-12 process, rather than as a higher optional level. College and school students have different needs, responsibilities, and living situations, as well as different instructional requirements.
Your School Software should be able to tackle those needs accordingly so that your administration can provide the best schooling experience possible for your students.
2. Take Backup and Security Functions into Account
Did you happen to burn your computer once in your life and lost all of your pictures, videos, and all other important files? It has happened to me before and I can remember the immense frustration I felt when I realized I couldn’t recover any of it after I had lost it all.
Moreover, I ensure to keep a copy of important data onto either the cloud, my external hard drive, or to both just to ensure that if any data theft or crash was to happen, I will know that my data is safe. Your school ERP should provide data back-up feature.
3. Don’t Forget Remote Access and Networking Capabilities
An admin and the teachers do not reside at the school, so making sure that they can access the information and capabilities that they need to complete their work, even off-site, is quite imperative to consider when choosing a software option.
You may have been troubled by networking in the past due to the limited capabilities of the internet, but that is no longer the case. At an ever-increasing rate, school fees software is moving into the cloud, providing remote access to your faculty whether they are in the library or on vacation in the Caribbean.
Tumblr media
4. Consider Student and Faculty Sizes
Some school mobile app options charge a premium on larger schools in order to manage larger pools of data due to a large faculty and an even larger student body. This happens with the consideration of which type of school you are managing with this software since the type of school you run will play a large factor in the size of the chosen school and the software.
If you are interested in a School Management Software that takes care of each and everything, starting from the admission to faculty management and exams, consider talking to an expert from MMI. They have been in business for 20+ years.
The software can be accessed from anywhere, anytime. A record of everything can be kept due to its easy accessibility. It also facilitates providing immediate information.
Using cloud-based software leads to student-teacher collaboration beyond the classroom. This increases the interaction between the staff and the students. The interaction happens over the application (online) where the teacher is available to answer queries of the students. It also facilitates a friendly atmosphere in academics.
In short, you can take care of admissions, fee management, exam schedules, transfers and a lot more, so what are you waiting for, give us a call today or visit http://www.mmsoftwares.com/school-management-software-school-mobile-app.

Hail and well met noble adventurer! I see you have managed to survive the perilous journey that takes you from Greyhawk to Seattle. Unfotunately, the locals can be, to put it in local parlance, 'sticks in the mud' about rival adventurers, or, as they call them, shadowrunners, showing up from far away mystical lands. It is almost as if they don't have enough ranks in diplomacy to understand that is being a terrriiiiiibleambassador for the greatest RPG setting ever made. No no, put your sword away, mindlessly slaying orks and trolls here is a faux pas. Lets get you situated. Because I am assuming you aren't a fool, you probably noticed that the system people gen around these parts is something called 'priority' for the most part, with a few people using lifepaths or karmagen. This means there are no levels. Which makes sense. To give you an idea of the power level of a starting runner, you can imagine them as being about level 6-9 in 5e, and maybe 11 in 4e. At the point where your average guardsman (they call them 'Cops' or 'Pawns' or 'KE' around here) can't really do much to threaten you, but noooot quite the point where the guard doesn't have enough people to drown you or a few magic items (Rocket launchers are magical, right?) you shouldn't treat them like a joke. And veryvery scary people who are as strong or stronger than you exist in those groups, ready to hunt you down if you misbehave too badly. Basically you are a big fish not in a small pond but in an ocean. Don't undersell yourself and cower in fear as a mallcop threatens to call in backup, but remember that you could get smashed if you aren't carefull. People get really upset when you talk about classes as well around these parts despite the fact that shadowrun baaaaasically has classes. But call them roles. Or people will get mad for no reason about it. The main roles everyone agrees exist are Mages, hackers, samurai, faces, and riggers. However no one can agree what any of them mean besides some superficial qualities. And some, like faces and samurai, have suuuper controversial debates around them like which one is actually an infiltrator or is infiltrator a new role on its own. That is just the locals being passionate about issues that affect them, pay them no mind, and always just be very explicit about what you are doing. Also, instead of multiclassing you can, with enough skill, mold two classes into one, sort of like how an avenger is a weird rogue-paladin hybrid in 4e, a combat face or battle hacker or gunslinger mage can be crafted. Unlike in D&D, you often lose very little from this up front, and instead pay in other more subtle ways. It is hard to go wrong, because unlike D&D where you need to be efficient with power because everything around you is scaling up constantly and if you mess up one level you basically can't fight ever again, Shadowrun boasts a metric called "good enough" where you consistently accomplish what you need to accomplish to beat 90% of the opponents and challenges you face. Adventures, or as the local adventurers call them, shadowruns, are rarely, though they sometimes are, a dungeon crawl. Of course, even in your homelands you are familiar with the types of adventures people around here take, and thus talking about how you should throw out all knowledge you have is completely silly. Most 'runs' are heists, where a team of people need to complete an objective that, surprisingly, doesn't involve breaking into a subterranean species's home to kill them for their stuff because they aren't the same species as you or your friends. Steal this, intimidate so and so, kill whoever, find out what is going on somewhere... Standard stuff. Unlike in the good old kingdoms however you generally don't do this solely through force of arms. You can, if you wish, and some runs will be best solved that way. But in general there is a lot more planning in a run. You can think of it like this, dungeons and dr- I mean adventures back home are more tactical, with more choices being made in a fight. In shadowru- Seattle, runs are more about thinking ahead and reacting to bad situations on the fly rather than just overpowering your opponent. You are stronger than most obstacles you face, but if you go head first into any situation, even a fight, you may find yourself shut down to the point you can't recover, and this is considered acceptable rather than unfair. Basically, use your head before charging in, rather than after, even if you 100% know you want to fight. Now, as for your character. A magician, or mystic adept, is a fine choice for a first character. Mages, Faces, and Samurai are probably the easiest characters to make. To be a good mage, you need to follow these basic rules: 1: Have magic at 6 2: Have spellcasting and summoning at 6. 3: Have at least 1, but probably more, ranks in counter-spelling, assessing, and binding. 4: Know the heal spell, and one AOE indirect spell. I recommend fireball, because it is a classic from your homeland. You should know more spells, but an AOE indirect is your panic button, and not knowing heal makes you a diiiick. 5: Carry a gun and use it over using combat magic unless you need to end the entire fight. If you ever cast fireball, it should be for a situation dire enough to overcast in. Use reagents to make overcasting non-lethal. 6: Let your team do the work until it is time to go ham. Then go ham, and continue to go ham until it is safe to stop going ham. Do all of that, and you are set. You could mess up pretty much every other aspect of your character and still be ok. Unlike in 'the homeland' magic has limits that prevent it from easily replacing the skills of others. For example, hiding normally is almost always more likely to work than an invisibility spell, unless the person hiding is rather bad at it, simply because of how the dice work out. By all means if someone needs to be invisible, make them invisible, but understand that every spell you cast is an unsubtle action on the astral and physical plane that may lead to detection. A good mage knows when to act with extreme prejudice and when to trust their team and their abilities. Starting gear is an easy place to mess up. Most gear lists are a bit too comprehensive for my tastes, but I recommend you look at them and understand why a lot of stuff is more helpful than you might think, and you can give serious consideration to just using one if you want. No matter what though, the bare minimum is a rating 3 SIN, fake licenses at the same rating as your SIN for magic, a gun, and something like bodyguard or private investigation, an armored jacket, a comlink of rating 2-3, a TMP, 30 rounds of standard ammo, and trodes. As a mystic adept, you have a few choices. If you wanted to be a mage-adept hybrid, I have bad news as mystic adepts are really bad at this, and while it can be done, I highly don't recommend it for your first PC. You can be a magical swordsman with experience in the system, but it will likely just be a miserable experience on your first PC. However mystic adepts are really good at being mages who are supported by adept powers. In this regard mystic adepts are newbie friendly because you can just take powers like combat sense and increase reflexes to become a very deadly combat mage. Some people find it boring, some people love it. But this is your character and if you find the idea of being the fastest spell-slinger in seattle to be cool then by Pelor's light you should make that character. The absolute worst reason to not do something is over the judgement of magical internet people. That said never be afraid to ask for advice, but be aware that specificity is good. Because the 'classes' of SR are much more open ended, as are the purchases you can make, it is much harder to help someone based solely on knowing their class. Elf-mystic adept tells us very little. I will note right off the bat you should swap attributes with magic, as starting with less than 6 magic is pretty rough on yourself. Its fine to do, but this is your first PC, best foot forward. I would also not advise mixing melee with mystic adept your first go around, because it again can be very challenging to do well. And if your game lasts for a decent amount of time it would be easy enough to learn melee and get very good at it very quickly anyway. Finally, some major genre stuff you really should make a consistent effort to wrap your brain around: It is ok, and even good, to split the party. Due to DNI and microtranscievers, you are effectively always in the same scene as everyone else, meaning many of the problems of splitting the party are gone. Because most runs are heists, the loss of combat power isn't an issue, and you may NEED to split up to accomplish objectives. No, everyone can't piggy back on the face and samurai sneaking into a place. Furthermore, just feel free to always ask your GM, point blank "What should I do in this situation" or "What does this mean?" Unless they are a twat, they will remember you are learning a radically different system and setting. And to the locals.... At the end of the day it is about pretending to be elves with magic beating the crap out of people, with slightly different twists about what kind of elves you are, how you beat people up, and why. Shadowrun is like my favorite thing ever, but it ain't that special, just... cool it yeah? Seriously... imagine if you were trying a big new intimidating hobby and everyone told you that you were doing it wrong and getting upset you misused jargon and that all the experiences you had that got you excited about doing this new thing are meaningless... that wouldn't be fun... it might even intimidate you out of even trying... And that isn't cool.
