It's probably obvious considering the stuff I usually post, but for a while now I've been making a concerted effort to stray away from realism. basically I forced myself to stop trying it because I'm a perfectionist and always end up disappointed lol, and that's obviously not what making art is for.

but anyway, for whatever reason today I decided to give it a go, and had to draw the loml elrond and those goddamn puppy dog eyes <3

did I babygirl-ify him? yeah. did I mean to? no. that's the way the cookie crumbles or whatever. but I'm proud of it anyway :)

Quodo Week 2025 Prompts

Our prompts are here! Hi everyone -- Quodo Week 2025 is a week dedicated to the Odo/Quark pairing from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It runs from August 4th to 10th with the prompts below. Basically, you create however many works you like for the set of prompts given, and then post them on the appropriate day during the week, and then we can look at what everyone created!

hi! so, this might seem like a weird question, but i wanna start drawing characters from fandoms that i really like but i don't know how to combine that style with my own, so do you have any advice/strategies that might work? ty!! ^^ :]

It can be really tough to get started and daunting on deciding how much to be inspired art-wise by the source material or how to adapt your own art style to the source material! - Break your reference characters into basic shapes! This works really well as it allows you to not get too hung up on the style-specific details! shapes are translatable across all styles! - Doing screencap redraws can be useful if you're trying to find the characters 'voice’ in your own style. You'll have context, some nice posing / dynamics to reference and it takes a lot of the 'thinking' out of the piece so you can focus on raw drawing rather than the pressure of coming up with absolutely everything! - I think clarifying what it is about your own style that you love is key! I always call it your negotiables/non-negotiables. Is the way you draw eyes and noses killer? You love the way you construct faces? It could be a little more general ie: your use of varying shapes, lineweight or line of action! Once you've figured out your non-negotiables you can identify your negotiables! Does the fandom reference have really cool colours? There's no shame in folding that into your style! Does it have a really pleasing simple way of drawing the eyes? Incorporate that but keep the nice way that you draw ears or hands! Drawing is like have a big list of ingredients (your inspirations and references) and picking and choosing what you're going to use for each recipe (illustration...lol...okay bit of a tired metaphor but you get the idea) - Don't feel pressured to leap into a full finished illustration as your first drawing of a character! I think everyone does some secret heads-facing-left or 3/4 floating torsos in order to 'find' the character a little on the page The long of the short is that it’s practice! The more you draw, the more comfortable you'll get at combining the two and you’ll become more confident with what you see emerging on the page! hope this helps a bit! <3

Okay so, why have I done this?

I wanted to make my own take on his design because I hate seeing my boy get roasted so hard by his friends for his outfit. I tried to keep some elements akin to his child-self’s design for sake of identification. I specifically kept the appearance of a crop-top (as seen in hs2 when he wears his younger self’s outfit) but with the addition of a skin-suit underneath for some actual practical protection (as I assume he will be doing some fighting at some point in the comic). I also kept his hood (it would be a crime not too) but with the addition of a collar to make it more similar to Commander Karkat’s outfit.

I also had an idea to make his outfit inspired by a Blue Tang, as his original colors are blue and yellow. I liked the addition of darker, more muted colors to keep up with the idea that they’re adults and this world they ended up in did not end up to be all sunshine and rainbows. BUT I kept his brighter colors as accents to call back to his fact. But yeah, idk why but I really liked the idea of theming aspects of his design on this little fishy vvv.

As far as the airbending aspect, outfits from ATLA for airbender are dynamic and move with the wind, which I felt suited John’s original outfit well. I’d imagine his hood will blow with the direction of wind which he is bending. Additionally, the reason he has a thigh back (other than its a little bit slutty) is that by having it attached directly to his thigh, he’s less likely to have it get in his way while fighting/wind/airbending.

Finally, the locket. I’m just a sap but I have a headcanon where he insists on fighting alongside his friends, BUT, that means he has to go off on his own a lot of the time, and isn’t able to see them or his son because of safety reasons. Thus, I think it is just a nice symbolic thing (especially because he is depressed) to have a reminder of people he cares about with him constantly.

I might in the future do a LOK screencap redraw from that scene where Zaheer uses airbending to take the air out of a person’s lungs, but I genuinely don’t know who John might do this to, other than random grunts.

LMAO thank you 😭😭 I’m not actually an art student!! I’m self taught (for what I’d like to say)

I’m taking art classes at my high school and I took an oil painting class for about a year but I don’t really use some of the stuff I learned from them. not sure why (probably because it’s all traditional material/techniques or still lives)

I did a lot of screencap redraws and studies of the show, which helped me get a grasp at color theory and lighting. I think the basics I know in anatomy came from drawing the AU so much and having to reference statues and the muscular system a lot, especially when it came to making their current reference sheets!! But overall reference images have helped me a LOT :)

I've been scrolling last night liking any Laserhawk post I thought was either wholesome, funny, generally nice, or was something I've seen around on Google or Pinterest already and I figured I'd share to my fellow members in the Laserhawk community one of my ocs for a fan project I currently have a prequel Q&A for (the project basically follows the show's plot but in my ocs' perspective as citizens mostly in the background) [FT. Some others for some context/mentions]

Her name is Rosea (I have yet to confirm ages for any of my ocs in the project but most of them are adults) she is a mushroom hybrid who was raised with her brother Robert with her aunt and uncle who work with a friend of hers at the diner (the one shown near the end of the show) she's a swordfighter (based on Scarlet from Brawlhalla even though I've never played the game so apologies to Brawlhalla fans if Rosea doesn't have any similar traits to Scarlet her design is based on multiple skins from the game that I looked up on Google)

For context the first mentioned friend of Rosea and Robert is Sheila- a fish hybrid is distressed about how she's never had a long lasting relationship {all of the relationships she's had were short lasting and kinda crappy} meanwhile Rosea has never shown any interest in pursuing a relationship with anybody mainly out of focus for her swordfighting in case of an event where she would need to protect her friends and family (I don't have a good refrence in my artstyle to reveal Sheila yet but I do have a picrew refrence to share with you all)

Her design is inspired by Ariel from the Little Mermaid (The animated one from Disney not Live action also from Disney- but if I were to make a human design for her, her skin tone might be like the Live Action one) She's also a huge fan of Rayman's show and wants to have of show of her own one day, to start she decides to provide a sort of phone hotline service at the diner to provide entertainment for patrons who are there by having her and her friends respond to any questions or comments for whoever calls the hotline (thus the Q&A)
