i'm literally making these for an audience of one and half people at this point. it's fine. anyway the show is painfully 2007 and @ steven maybe go to therapy or something but like. james nesbitt was fantastic in this and more people should watch it. sorry for the spoilers but also the show aired [checks watch] 18 years ago and is now old enough to buy me a drink. so.
#bbc jekyll#bbc episode polls#jones blogging#yeah okay. this has been in my drafts for nearly two full years lmao.

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: "I didn't come here to debate the nature of identity with you."
Jekyll showcases some of Steven Moffat’s weaknesses as a writer as well as some of his strengths, but when I first saw the miniseries in 2011, I thought that it was an amazingly brilliant take on a classic story with which I was quickly becoming obsessed.
I took a lot of notes as I watched the first episode...

...and the second...

...and all the way to the end.

I wrote almost 14,000 words of Jekyll fanfic over the next year, including several crossovers, and you can find most of it on AO3. I also collaborated on a fusion with Moffat’s other retelling of a Victorian classic.
Although I first talked about the basic foundations of “Jekyllock” with another friend, @ellekess and I ultimately took the story and ran with it. In that AU, Jim Moriarty had been Sherlock’s murderous alter ego, sharing and occasionally transforming his body, since childhood. Mycroft knew about Jim but kept his existence a secret from Sherlock. Eventually, in the series timeline, John and Sherlock pieced together the truth.

Throughout 2012 and for a little while after, Elle and I wrote scenes as they occurred to us, out of sequence, and emailed them back and forth. Sometimes we texted each other in character as John and Mycroft, or Jim and pretty much anyone. (We both really loved writing in his voice.) I vividly recall scribbling one scene on public transit – I can’t find the draft now, but it involved Molly Hooper finding out what was going on – in a burst of creative energy that I still find remarkable to this day. I also remain delighted by the interactions that Elle wrote between Jim and Mycroft, in particular. (“I have no wish to hear about your urges, James.”)
I loved exploring this AU, and I loved working on it together with someone who was equally invested. Even after we moved on to other fannish interests, and although I don’t know whether we’ll ever share everything that we wrote, Elle and I have always looked back on our Jekyllock project fondly, and we still do.

Shoutout to the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for having an absolute banger of a title. Truly got everything you need. It’s unique. It’s intriguing. Love the format. However, extreme un-shoutout to literally every adaptation that’s been made since for invariably being titled some form of “Jekyll & Hyde.” Like I get it, it’s easy shorthand to know what story you’re telling, but by the gods of if I have to distinguish between any more of these I’m going to explode
#the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde#jekyll and hyde#the glass scientists truly doing it better than anyone. sorry guys#was watching bbc Jekyll today and can’t believe that one is technically creative for dropping Hyde’s name from the title. girl cmon#this issue is also held by Sherlock adaptations#again so many just named after the Guy#shoutout to Moriarty the patriot tho that one flipped the tables on us

Thank god I'm lazy enough to not write some kind of Jekyll and Hyde based retelling, kind of like what BBC did with Sherlock...
It would be a shame if I did...

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: Crossover Investigations
I wrote a lot of crossovers back in Ye Olde LiveJournal Days. From time to time, I solicited prompts from my readers, using a format that I’d borrowed from another LJ user.
Below the cut, I'm going to list a total of 20 characters (10 male, 10 female). Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to pick two of the characters (can be from same fandom or not) and give me a line of dialogue/song/quote. I will attempt to write something for those two characters interacting.
I initiated five rounds of what I called the Big Damn Crossover Project – which was, for those who don’t remember, a Firefly reference. If I issued a similar challenge today, I’d almost certainly call it something else, and I probably wouldn’t divide the characters according to a gender binary, either. I’m not saying that I plan to do it again, but I’m not saying that I wouldn’t, either: although I don’t write as many crossovers as I used to, I certainly don’t love them any less. And this project gave me the chance to write about characters whom I liked but for whom I couldn’t think of any creative story hooks, and to stretch my imagination toward scenarios in which the requested characters could meet, even if sometimes the scenarios turned out to be “time travel” or “the psychic plane” or “a hostage situation.” Some universes, however, meshed surprisingly well together. During the fourth iteration of the project, in 2011, Miranda Callendar, a detective from the BBC’s Jekyll, investigated the succubus-run fashion company from the short-lived and much-missed comedic superhero series The Middleman.

"Lesbian detectives leave retirement to track supernatural shenanigans while dealing with the challenges of new parenthood" would be an awesome premise for a show, is what I'm saying.

i don't have a rationale yet but i definitely think the line of harker was cut off earlier than we are being led to believe
plus who is Dracula saying "Harkerrr I can taste youuu" to on episode 1, his very first lines, like he tells van Helsing he can taste him and smell him on ep 3-4. since not to Jeremy, was J3 even in the westenra building, because the only other person there was Maddie. the plot thickens.
(grouping these two asks because I assume they're from the same person) (edit nope my mistake sorry to both senders)
I hadn't spotted that! the opening scenes between the trailer and episode one are a bit different, the full episode cuts to the theme music when maddie goes off to get jeremy but the trailer lets the scene continue until she brings him back, they hear the containment breach alarm, and dracula specifically says "harker I can taste you," and I hadn't actually listened to the trailer before. my god does the sequence of events in the first ep make more sense now lol.
now, hmm. arthur seems like a decent enough bloke, but I am getting a leetol suspicious of him, and he's the one who suggested maddie switch careers from history teacher to vampire archivist. hmmm.
#anyone else seen that 2007 bbc show jekyll? spoilers ahead but#that show is also about a contemporary foundation established by the characters of a classic gothic novel trying to bring back the monster#for fun and profit. as one does.#and iirc the whole twist there is that the secret to doing it wasn't just cloning dr jekyll#it was cloning the person in his life who 'brought out the beast in him' and then manipulating both clones into meeting and falling in love#(imo it works well enough in the context of the show but has bugger all to do with engaging with the text of jekyll and hyde lmao)#anyway. I'm getting a little bit of a similar vibe.#of course most of this is speculative nonsense but we do like to have fun here <3#the holmwood foundation#answered#anons
