From Couch to 10K: Building Fitness Habits That Actually Stick

Let me start with a confession: I used to hate running. Like… genuinely despised it.
I’d try a fitness routine for a week, maybe two. Then life got busy, motivation faded, and I’d be right back on the couch with snacks and excuses.
Sound familiar?
Then one day I saw someone post “Couch to 10K” on their Instagram story. I laughed out loud. That felt… impossible.
But something about it stuck with me.
So I gave it a shot, on my own terms. And somehow, this time, the habit actually stuck. Here’s how I went from zero to 10K without burning out, quitting, or hating my life:
1. I Focused on Consistency, Not Intensity
The goal wasn’t to run fast or far, it was just to show up. Some days I only jogged for 10 minutes. Other days I walked. But I moved. That was the win.
The pressure to “go hard or go home” is a lie. You just need to go.
2. I Made a 3x Per Week Rule (Not Every Day!)
I stopped trying to work out every single day. Instead, I committed to three days a week, no matter what.
Three feels doable, even on hard weeks. And surprise: I often added a fourth day just because I felt good.
3. I Made It Enjoyable (Yes, Really)
Running became my “me time.” I made playlists I loved, downloaded motivational podcasts, and chose pretty routes.
Pro tip: Get cute activewear. It weirdly helps.
4. I Tracked Progress - But Not Obsessively
I used a simple app to log my runs, but I didn’t freak out about pace or distance. Seeing that streak grow was motivating enough.
Progress > perfection, always.
5. I Forgave Myself (And Kept Going)
Yes, I skipped days. Yes, I had bad runs. But I stopped letting one off week derail everything.
Instead of “starting over,” I just picked up where I left off. That mindset shift? Game-changing.
Final Thought
Getting fit isn’t about becoming someone else, it’s about becoming the version of you who shows up.
You don’t have to run marathons. Just start where you are, stay kind to yourself, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Trust me: if I can do it, you absolutely can.

From Couch to 5K: A Beginner’s Guide to Weight Loss Through Running
Starting a running program can be a game-changer for weight loss, even if you’re starting from scratch. Here’s a simple guide to help you go from couch potato to 5K finisher:
Start Slow: Begin with a walk/run program. Start with 30-minute sessions, alternating between walking and jogging. For example, walk for 4 minutes, then jog for 1 minute.
Build Gradually: Increase your running time gradually. Aim to add 1 minute of running per week, reducing walking time as you build stamina.

Set Goals: Set short-term goals, like running continuously for 10 minutes, and long-term goals, like completing a 5K. Celebrate each milestone to stay motivated.
Get the Right Gear: Invest in a good pair of running shoes and comfortable workout clothes. Proper gear reduces the risk of injury and makes running more enjoyable.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Proper nutrition and hydration support your running performance and recovery. Focus on a balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
Rest and Recover: Allow your body time to recover. Incorporate rest days and cross-training activities to avoid burnout and reduce injury risk.
By following these steps, you can transform your fitness routine, achieve your weight loss goals, and enjoy the benefits of running.

I've been really struggling recently to get into any kind of routine. I'm not sure if it's down to my ADHD, anxiety or just not being able to find the right one yet, but I've only even managing to stay on the right track for a few days at a time.
Today and yesterday I went for two big walks instead of forcing myself to the gym and I did a lot of thinking. I came to two conclusions.
1. I prefer being outside for long periods of time than being in the gym for short peruods
2. I want to be a person who runs
I feel good having come to these two realizations, and like I can realign my routines and goals to match this. Hopefully I can master my self discipline this time and really stick to it.

-100lbs and still learning what works in my life. My dance and exercise area is coming along.. Ive taken these last few weeks (or honestly all 2020 so far😅) to process and reflect on a lot. Ill post some before and after pics of it all soon of the interior project.. But in the mean time: Here's me.. processing the change of my most sacred and intimate place. My home. Well. And me. Heres me. Accepting that I made this change for me. Accepting that I am allowed to love myself and give myself what I want and need.. afterall, I am the only one who can do so, in this current time. Life has ebbs n flows, and this year gas challenged me to see that. Emotions/feelings come and go. Honor them. Sit through them. Accept them. They do not define who you are or your health. They are just momentary urges. Keep asking questions, keep figuring out what works for you. Keep figuring out what works in which moments... Explore your creativity. Explore whats fun. Nothing is wasted when you are choosing self love. #keepmovingforward #fengshui #openmindedness #mentalhealth #mentalgrowth #fattofit #onederland #keto #exercise #athomefitness #athomeworkout #workoutathome #healthadvocate #holisticpsychology #herbalism #yoga #dance #run #beginnerrunner #garmin #athleticism #testingmyathleticism #ketoforbeginners #extremeweightlossjourney #cize #shaunT #spirituality #jesuschrist #singleincolorado #interiordesign (at Denver, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAwsl0ggdBk/?igshid=1sfepdxifqzwx

First post illness run and my fastest pace so far! (First kilometre was 6.48! I've never run a sub 7.10km in my life!!) Chest felt a little wheezy towards the end so I decided to just head home rather than second loop for the 6k. . Okay, so...I ran! Did I complete the 1 - 1 1/2 goal? No, but I ran for about 2 minutes and that’s all that matters!!! I think by the end of 2019, I’ll be a runner yet! Tyler’s goal is to run a 5K at the end of summer, and these group runs are helping him achieve that so if that’s what I accomplish by attending, then I’ll be happy! 😃He and Matt (sorry I didn’t grab a pic with you!!!!!) are such cool, down-to-earth dudes and they’ve welcomed me into their inner circle of runners/fitness which is such a great blessing 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 All I’ve ever been wanted is for my efforts to be noticed and appreciated and 2019 certainly has been a year for that and it FEELS AMAZING. . . . . . #beginnerrunner #fitnessmotivation #fitnessgoals2019 #tylercameron #summerinnyc #startedat280 (at Central Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzwZ3dUAu60/?igshid=1jydui2mweexk

Today was the first day of my 75 soft / 75 medium 75 I don't know what 75 it is. It always starts out easier in the mornings when I'm full of motivation and energy. But I got it all done and I feel proud! Running was super hard today, my brain said yes and my legs said no. But I did it!!
