Prev: Screenshot from user lornashawty, person holding up sheets of stickers. "bossman keeps hiring incompetent children at work so I'm putting them all on sticker charts, fuck them kids" and then "why the fuck is it working"
this is so real though
American company Opower gave people smiley faces or sad faces on their energy bills, comparing them to the norm, and over-consumers voluntarily lowered their usage.
"While this sort of communication seems overly simplistic, a recent and peer-reviewed independent evaluation of their program has shown it to consistently reduce long-term energy use by 2%, in an environment where energy use is going up."
More from the article:
"Some of the best examples of the effective use of descriptive norms can be seen in experiments conducted by the UK’s Behavioural Insights Team in the fields of health, energy and tax.
"In one application alone, the UK government raised an additional £200 million by simply rephrasing tax statements. How? By changing the wording of letters chasing unpaid tax to state that “94% of tax payers pay their tax on time”, which emphasises that paying tax and doing so on time is normal for the vast majority.
"This simple change led to an increase in repayment rates from 50% to 85%, raised £200 million and saved the government a lot of time chasing people."
And another example:
"Instead of listing the number of people who have failed to turn up to their appointments and the amount of money it’s costing the government, the researchers put up a sign that stated how many people DO attend their appointment (95%). The result? An 18% decrease in no shows at the medical clinic.
"The researchers also added an active commitment and asked people to fill out their own appointment cards rather than the administrator doing it. In combination with the descriptive norm intervention, no shows decreased by 31%."
Humans do love juice reward too. (And fitting in, and sticking to their word.)

Overcoming a Phobia: Swimming through Limiting Beliefs
I was ten years old. I had been attending a two-week swimming class with my brother and some neighborhood friends. After the two weeks, my comfort level in the water was high. It was time for the “exam” in which I had to dive and swim for a short distance. As I dove in, I felt really comfortable. I was holding my breath (red flag). And I had no goggles so my eyes were closed (red flag). I…

Successful innovators don’t ask customers and clients to do something different; they ask them to become someone different.  Facebook asked its users to become more open and sharing with their personal information, even if they might be less extroverted in real life. - Brad Feld, Foundry Group

Turn Fear Into Opportunity
My students create Fun Theory Projects—here’s how we can all do this to inspire meaning, purpose, and positive change for everyone and everything.
Moving Toward a Thriving Future Today in class, we watched Greta Thunberg’s TED Talk, The Disarming Case to Act Right Now on Climate Change. While her message was powerful, it focused on avoiding disaster rather than creating something better. She said that we already have the knowledge and solutions—we need to act. That got me thinking—why do we so often frame change as a way to prevent harm…

2 Critical Junctures: Fate vs Destiny and Narcissism vs Self-Love
I was recently coaching a dear client, and they mentioned to me their current predicament. It was about how to direct the course of their life. I mentioned that the highest self, the soul calling, destiny, requires complete trust and surrender. This process is not for the mind, but for the soul-infused heart. The fated life must be shed before we can hear and fulfill the call of destiny,…

Atomic Habits -The top 10 lessons
Here are the top 10 lessons from James Clear’s book Atomic Habits: 1. The Power of Tiny Gains: Small habits compound over time. Improving by just 1% each day leads to significant changes over a year. 2. Focus on Systems, Not Goals: Goals are about the results you want to achieve, while systems are about the processes that lead to those results. Building effective systems is key to long-term…

thinking about the early overprotective and twitchy Batdad days where the “pummel any threat to Robin into non-existence” leaks over a little too much into “Bruce Wayne, adoptive father of one (and counting)” and suddenly Dick’s in the principal’s office at school for getting into a fight and the other kid’s dad comes barreling in yelling and Bruce just…throws him out. picks him up by the collar and full-body tosses him out the door. physically lifts an entire, grown man up and throws him out like he weighs nothing because the alternative is letting him near Dick or beating him into a pulp on the linoleum floors and Alfred will kill him if Dick needs to change schools, so here they are. some smug, rich-but-not-richer-than-Bruce-fucking-Wayne dad hit the wall outside of the office head-first hard enough to embarrass his kid and Dick realizes, in that split second, that Bruce isn’t really the guy standing in front of him anymore.
