August 2nd: my shadow and me. Introducing my taboo alter ego…Foxy Roxi…for so long I have hidden my sensual sexual side because I had a hard time saying no. Most people would not attempt to proposition me when I loudly professed I was a “Jesus Freak” or had a boyfriend, who I usually was with when not at home or in some type of structure environment where males had to behave. The idea of being desirable scared me. You see I am a survivor of sexual abuse. And the fucked up thing is it create this kink in my relating to potential partners where I am attracted to those who are unavailable in some way. In spite of my expressed desires to connect deeply and intimately with a partner, I seemed to always need an escape hatch. …And tended to be with men who were only interested in relating through sex, though they would begrudgingly give me what I wanted, which was usual intimate conversations and emotional connection to get what they wanted. I found myself constantly disappointed because something generally felt off and I would discover lies and half truths partners were keeping under wraps. But my sly fox self could unearth any truth if self preservation was on the line. It made for a lot of icky relating. Games. This month I have been challenged to be “visible” so this little fox is coming out of hiding. I’ll be sharing as I messily explore dating and relating in a new for me way that is fluid, authentic, experimental, and open to the possibilities. "Unimaginative", as time goes on I seem to notice more and more of a lack of importance on creative thinking or arts in general. You may think that our world is getting more "progressive", but it it is not becoming more creative. To me, art is less about how you can color in the lines, but more about how you can add to them. Despite what you might think, art is essential, and our world would look very strange without it. However, unless art and the things it produces are held just as high if not higher then the automotive industry, a strange world is what you should expect. More trades and small businesses is what our country really needs, as well as health alternatives. As crazy as it might sound to some, but a lack of opinions in life just leaves you seeing things without color. Limited in your thoughts, limited in your walk. They are indeed one in the same. Wealth, Experience, Looks, Power or Education can earn you initial 'Good Impression' but respect is something you always have to work for to earn. You cannot treat others with disrespect, contempt and disregard and then turn around to demand 'I deserve to be respected!' People may be polite to your face, but that speaks more about their manners. People may greet you kindly, because that is how they are. But that does not guarantee that they will respect you and trust you. Someone said, 'Your branding is what people are saying behind your back!' and it also applies perfectly to respect. If you treat others unkindly, rudely, arrogantly, there is only to a point people will tolerate your inappropriate behavior and then you will be alienated, without even being informed. When you cross certain boundaries, you also ascertain that people walk away from you, maintain their distance and do not induldge you at any point. These #conversations, moderated by @devonp2cp, accompany artist @cobykennedy’s new sculptural installation in tribute to the tragic story of 17-year old #KaliefBrowder, who was wrongfully imprisoned on Rikers Island without trial and subjected to 700 days of solitary confinement. Two years after his release, Browder committed suicide.
