The Role of Vitamin A in Eye Health
Maintaining optimal eye health is crucial for a good quality of life, and one of the key nutrients responsible for this is Vitamin A. Known for its powerful role in preserving vision, Vitamin A deficiency can lead to several eye-related disorders, including night blindness and dry eyes. In this blog, Dr Ramesh Murthy, a renowned ophthalmologist and Best Eye Specialist in Pune, explains how Vitamin A benefits your vision and how to ensure you're getting enough.
Understanding Vitamin A and Its Benefits
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It helps convert light into a signal that can be interpreted by the brain, enabling us to see, especially in low-light conditions.
How Vitamin A Supports Eye Health
Prevents Night Blindness: One of the earliest signs of Vitamin A deficiency is difficulty seeing in low light or darkness.
Reduces the Risk of Eye Infections: Vitamin A helps maintain the surface tissues of the eye, enhancing its resistance to infections.
Supports Tear Production: Adequate Vitamin A levels prevent dry eye syndrome by supporting the proper functioning of the tear glands.
Slows Macular Degeneration: As an antioxidant, it helps protect against age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
Sources of Vitamin A
To ensure your eyes receive the right nourishment, Dr Ramesh Murthy recommends including the following Vitamin A-rich foods in your diet:
Animal Sources: Liver, eggs, dairy products, and fish oil
Plant-Based Sources: Carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, and other leafy greens (rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into Vitamin A)
For individuals with chronic eye conditions or a diet lacking in Vitamin A, supplements may be considered. However, Dr Ramesh Murthy advises consulting with your eye doctor before starting any supplementation.
Vitamin A Deficiency and Eye Problems
Deficiency in Vitamin A can lead to:
Night blindness
Dry eyes
Corneal ulcers
Bitot's spots (buildup on the white of the eyes)
Complete vision loss if left untreated
At the Best Eye Clinic In Pune, these symptoms are thoroughly evaluated to determine if nutritional deficiencies are contributing to eye health issues. Early detection and treatment are essential.

Also like people who act as if herpes is truly the worst thing in the world forgetting that if you've fucked a bunch of people you probably have a dormant form of the virus. And when people get weird about cold sores of all things... Ahh yes I was a whore at 8 because I got some cold sore on the bit between my eye and nose. Like it's smart to not fuck when you have an active sore but apart from that I've seen some of the most terrifying slut shaming from people because of oohhh you have genital herpes....

A study on evictions at Ambedkar Nagar slum in Mumbai, found profound effects on health. Stunting and wasting were identified in the children with skin and hair changes suggestive of kwashiorkor and rickets. Two-third of the children had obvious pallor (signifying anemia) and a quarter of them showed signs of hypovitaminosis-A including conjunctivalxerosis, Bitot spots and corneal xerosis. Additionally, there was evidence of widespread infection: diarrhoea, respiratory infections including pneumonia, and skin infections.

PREVALENCE OF VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY, SCLERAL MELANOCYTOSIS, TOOTH DECAY AND SKIN INFECTION AMONG RURAL PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN MULSHI TEHSIL, M/S, INDIA | Asian Journal of Advances in Research
A village survey was conducted in rural parts of Mulshi Tehsil with the purpose of identifying health-related problems among rural preschool children in the current study. 527 preschool children underwent clinical evaluations for a variety of health concerns. Their information was gathered and evaluated to determine the prevalence of Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) and other prevalent health problems such as tooth decay and skin illnesses. These health problems could be caused by a lack of knowledge about hygiene and sanitation, exposure to a humid atmosphere due to high rains in the research area, drinking unfiltered borewell water, and so on. The growth of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungus, and/or other germs is aided by excessive humidity and poor sanitation. The current survey found that 12.3 percent of preschool children have VAD, which comprises 2% night blindness, 2.5 percent xerophthalmia, 4% Bitot spots, and 3.8 percent conjunctival xerosis. Scleral melanocytosis, 2.7 percent tooth decay, and 5.3 percent skin problems were among the other health conditions discovered. Four Unauthorized Symptoms of Vitamin A Deficiency
Tumblr media
Ever wondered what vitamin A deficiency looks like? Here are all the tips you need.
Vitamin A plays a major role in optimal physical health and performance. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for many physical functions such as vision, immune system, reproduction and metabolism. It also helps the proper functioning of the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain. But that's not the only role. Vitamin A also has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage from free radicals.
Adult women are advised to take about 700 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin A per day. On the other hand, 900 micrograms (mcg) is the recommended daily intake for men.
So how do you know if you have vitamin A deficiency? Here are some signs to let you know that you need to increase your vitamin A intake. Dry eye:
Tumblr media
Dry eyes and lack of tears are often one of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency. Bitot's spots; foamy white lesions of the cornea can cause dry eye and, in extreme cases, complete blindness or death of the cornea.
Another eye-related symptom of vitamin A deficiency is night blindness. Vitamin A forms an important part of rhodopsin, a light-absorbing protein in the retina, whose deficiency can cause night blindness.
Dry skin:
Tumblr media
Dry skin is another sign of vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A plays an important role in the production and repair of skin cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help treat dry skin, eczema and other skin problems.
Retinol, the main ingredient in most skincare products that help reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture, comes from Vitamin A. Therefore, vitamin A deficiency can cause eczema and various skin problems.
Throat and chest infections:
Tumblr media
Frequent throat and chest infections can also be a sign of vitamin A deficiency. The anti-inflammatory effect of vitamin A provides protection against invasive pathogens such as colds and infectious diseases.
Therefore, if you notice frequent infections, it may be a sign that you need vitamin A. Before looking for vitamin A supplements, keep in mind that further research is needed in this area, and if not deficient, supplements can have serious consequences ...
Poor wound healing:
Tumblr media
Vitamin A plays an important role in alleviating the body's inflammatory response, so without vitamin A, the body will not heal properly. This is because Vitamin A stimulates the production of collagen, which is essential for healthy skin. Source of Vitamin A
Vitamin A is available from a variety of food sources and comes in two types commonly found in foods.
Preformed Vitamin A (Retinol-common in meat, eggs, fish and dairy products.
Provitamin A: Carotenoids in vegetable foods such as red, green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables are broken down by the body into vitamin A.
And here's an interesting fact:
If someone tells you to name a vegetable that improves eyesight, they will probably name a carrot. Now, did you know that it was actually propaganda that started during the World War II propaganda campaign? The story is that the government has attributed their success to good roots by maintaining the fact that the Royal Air Force's new radar technology helped pilots secretly shoot down German enemy planes at night. .. To stir it up, several ads have appeared, including "Carrots keep you healthy and help you find out about your eclipse." However, studies have shown that the roots actually protect the eyes because they are rich in the antioxidants lutein and beta-carotene.
