Edition Redux — Broadcast Transformer (Audiographic)

Methods matter as much as outcomes in Ken Vandermark’s music. That means that when the Chicago-based improviser, composer, organizer and reeds player puts together a band, the way its members come to terms with the way the sounds go together is as much of a creative expression as the way they sound. Edition Redux is Vandermark’s current touring ensemble, the main place where he works out partially pre-planned forms over the long haul.

It is the descendent of a larger band that played just once in late 2022. While its performance showed promise, its membership was not available to devote the time necessary to develop the band’s fluency with Vandermark’s concept. So, he cut it down, switching out the established veterans (no hard feelings, they’ve continued to work with him elsewhere) and reducing the line-up to a quartet comprising three younger players — keyboardist Erez Dessel, drummer Lily Glick Finnegan and tuba/electronics player Beth MacDonald. They’ve toured with Vandermark both in Europe and the USA, and Broadcast Transformer is their second album.

The material that Vandermark has written for Edition Redux references a breadth of artistic impulses; the album’s list of dedicatees includes Scratch Acid, Nan Goldin and Herbie Nichols, among many others. Vandermark uses these lists to acknowledge people whose way of working has in some way inspired pause and reconsideration of how he works. These influences rarely manifest as an emulation of someone else’s sound, but in more of a problem-solving fashion. How long does a segment last? How does it connect to the next one? How disruptive or connective are the transitions? If this is starting to sound as much like film as music, it’s not accidental. Not only did Vandermark study film in college, he’s periodically commented upon it (among other non-musical artforms) in his social media posts.

Sequencing is a profound concern in Edition Redux’s music, and in this regard, Broadcast Transformer feels like a realization of the promise of its first CD, Better A Rook Than A Pawn. The album’s 14 pieces are combined in a modular fashion which leaves open the possibility that they can be shuffled and reordered. The quartet has been working this way for a while, and it shows in a couple ways. The jumps are more abrupt and the segues are more liquid, reflecting a mastery of the music’s transitions. And the places where segments abut also seem to make use of the musicians’ multiple strengths, which suggests that Vandermark’s been writing with them in mind. Dessel can switch instantaneously from funky comping with a clavinet-voiced synth to sharp-edged electronic slabs or a surging piano avalanche; he’s the sharp edge of the editor’s razor.  Finnegan’s playing clearly articulates not only the shifting time feels, but the compositions’ contours throughout the contrasting sections. MacDonald’s tuba is a distinguishing sound print that can be a bulky, befogging presence or a strategically reinforcing agent of rhythm. Vandermark sounds like just himself, by turns burly, earthy, and emphatic, but also energized; one supposes that it’s a gas to be able to know that he can trust this posse of younger players to realize his ideas and bring their own strong selves.

Pure Vanilla He's one of the first to find you and he instantly realises who you are. He's quick to come over and help you off the ground and bring you to the kingdom...technically your kingdom, he checks over you in an instant to make sure you haven't endured any injuries, this must be strange for you. He hopes you're not scared of him now that you met him.

After checking your body for the nth time for injuries and hearing your reassurances for the nth time, he finally calms down and hugs you. He knows it may be better to continue the lie of not knowing, but he can't help himself!! You're really here? How? He shyly explains everything to you and even offers you to stay with him as you settle in. He's a bit protective over you in a way, he wants to protect you now that you were in their world. He'll join you on walks around your kingdom or the other places in Crispia if you want to go.

He'd want to hold your hands so much during these walks but I feel he wouldn't ask out right, however if you were to hold his hand or ask, he'd be so elated and happily hold your hand as the two of you walked around.

Shadow Milk He was just floating around, yappering away to Black Sapphire about witches know what until...he hears a familiar voice, he almost instantly bolts away to investigate, leaving Black Sapphire to just stare at the spot where his master used to be. As he reaches the source, he can't help the giddy grin creeping on his face as he sees you, you look so adorable!! You're one of them now, without thinking he quickly tackles you into a hug, ignoring Pure Vanillas presents.

When he arrives, Shadow Milk and Pure Vanilla seemed to be talking, for once it seems like Shadow Milk is willing to make a compromise with Pure Vanilla. You, go to the Spire? Oh he'd enjoy that, he'll even let you join him in his recording room for his radio show, he'd love for other cookies to hear your voice broadcasted on his radio show. Burning Spice Okok so imagine after a few months you decide to take a walk on your own and end up being tackled (once again) by yet another beast. Well not tackled, more so you're now being carried by the Great Destroyer himself. Oh he's happy to have finally met you in person!!

He’s quick to introduce you to his minions who seem to take the time to investigate you, Burning Spice makes it clear that you’re one of the few that is off limits, one of the few that if he finds out is destroyed he will not be satisfied. You get that kind of special treatment.

Even when he lets you go, you have a strange feeling you’re being followed, and not necessarily by him but his minions? He just wants to ensure you’re okay and if anything bad happens to you (specifically if that harm comes from a different cookie) he wants to know as soon as possible so he can teach that cookie a lesson

Fire Spirit (may be OOC) It’s hard not to notice a flaming red candle coming your way in high speeds, as soon as he hears the mention of you being here? Oh here’s there in a flash to introduce himself. He knows there’s a chance you don’t know him as well as the others (unless you’ve played OB) so what better way to get to know each other than this?

He’s so enthusiastic on meeting you and insists on taking you to the best places of Crispia while also introducing you to the other Legendarys, he keeps you close by his side. Almost as if the two of you are dating already. He doesn’t mind that it looks like that too, it may not be what he intended but hearing younger cookies ask if you two are together gives him a sense of pride.

Oh and he loves your cookie form, sure technically it wasn’t different to how you looked like before but he just finds it so cute!! He’ll tag along anywhere you go, nearly beg for you to let him join you even if you’re planning on a walk by yourself. He’ll try to convince you but won’t push if you truly want a walk by yourself. one thing you gotta know about transformers as a fandom is that it’s been around for so long that there’s an extra layer of non-canon information that almost everyone making fan content just widely accepts as canon, like seeker trines having some kind of special bond, or the existence of EM fields that broadcast emotions to other bots to some extent, or just the word “seeker” at all to refer to specific types of jet transformers. almost none of this stuff is ever touched on or even mentioned in canon sources (except for once in a catalogue and then a couple times in various media relatively recently irt the word “seeker”) but the whole fandom knows it and if you’re new you end up just having to pick it up via context clues because no one’s gonna stop their fics to explain.
