I recently read the Bungo Stray Dogs light novel called 55 Minutes and it has reminded me of how much I love the dynamic between Dazai and Kunikida. Their interactions are sometimes just comedic gold.

(Big spoilers for the novel incoming. Read at your own risk)

Dazai pouted as he rolled around inside the garbage can. "I was waiting for all the guards to leave. And now that the coast is clear, I'll just jump out of this and... Oops, I can't get out."

"Good. Hope you enjoy the incinerator." Kunikida glared at Dazai.

"What?" Kunikida's expression changed. "Is that true, Dazai?"

"If it were, would that change your opinion about me?"

"Don't worry. My opinion of you can't get any lower. Now spit it out."

"Ah, your praise brings a tear to my eye!" exclaimed Dazai with a grin.

Kunikida was slouching in his seat, drooping his head like an ear of rice. From the side, he looked burned-out, like lifeless ash.

"There was something... not written in my notebook..? That Atsushi knew before me..? My life is over... Just kill me.."

Kunikida moaned like a dying man, then flopped over in his seat.

"So you've finally given up being human," muttered Kunikida. He sounded thoroughly disgusted. "How does somebody survive even after stopping their own heart?"

"I learned how to do it during my quest to master the secret arts of suicide, naturally. Hearts don’t take long to starts back up, it’s no big deal.”

"Nothing you say ever makes sense."

"How does it feel to be able to listen to my beautiful voice as if I were whispering into your ear? You're so lucky. Oh, I know. How about I sing a song?"

"Just do your job!" Judging by Kunikida's roaring voice, it sounded as though he was standing behind Dazai.

"Don't be so serious. What's the worst that could happen? If we fail, we die. Big deal."

"Don't drag your sick fetishes into this. [—]”

"Kunikida," Atsushi said while placing a finger on Dazai's chest. "His heart stopped."

"I see... Atsushi," Kunikida said as if he was struggling to suppress something. "You know the procedure, right?"

”Oh, and I heard you guys had been discussing how to bring me back to life behind my back, too. Now I'll have to come up with a new plan to kill myself. But—"

"DAZAAAAAAI!"

"Oof?!"

Kunikida drop-kicked Dazai from the side, nearly breaking him in two and sending him flying to the ground.

"HOW...MANY TIMES...ARE YOU GOING TO...SCREW UP THE JOB...BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SIT STILL?!?! DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH...WE HAD TO GO THROUGH...TO BRING YOU BACK TO LIFE...?!?!"

"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow! Kunikida, please stop kicking and choking and yelling at me!"

"The hell are you talking about?! 'Finally managed to die? You're no longer human! You don't deserve that right! If you really want to die that much, I'll kill you myself! How about this?! And this?! How about from this angle?!"

"You've got work to do!" Kunikida barked while tossing a stack of paperwork on Dazai's desk. "You need to finish your report of Standard Island, and make it snappy. The Division is growing impatient."

"Whaaat?" complained Dazai, clearly put out. "I mean, I guess I could do it, but... Kunikida, do you have any way I could cool off? Like with your skill?"

"I know a way you could really cool off, but it doesn't have anything to do with my skill. Want to give it a try?"

"Wait—really? How?"

"Stop your heart for two minutes, then let me resuscitate you."

”...I regret everything." Dazai stared at Kunikida with reproach.

This novel has made me miss the simple days when the threats the ADA faced weren’t related to Fyodor or vampires or all the other insanity.

Also, Kunikida did NOT cope well with Dazai actually dying or the stress that fighting against time to bring him back from the dead brought him. The man does care about him quite a bit - to the point that he has thought in excruciating detail about how to bring Dazai back should he actually die.

so the other day i read the beggar student (a short story) by osamu dazai and was struck by the resemblances to BSD's first chapter/episode that it has?? like it's genuinely crazy. here's the gist of what i'm talking about (*spoiler warning, please scroll if you don't want to see!*)

struggling author (also named osamu dazai) meets struggling student at the side of a river bank. said student is swimming/drifting down the river

dazai decides to 'save' the student bc he thinks he's drowning

student chews him out for being stupid like that after dazai trips and falls

one thing turns to another and then they go for lunch at a teahouse together (yes, a teahouse lol. no chazuke though)

dazai can barely pay for their food/tea bc he's broke

later they go drinking with one of the student's friends, who happens to be kind of uptight and serious (this one is a stretch but i'm including it anyway)

there's a lot of references to classic literature/philosophy all throughout

that's a very brief, crude summary of all the references i could pinpoint. the rest of this story goes by quite quick (it's only about 96 pages in all, and this was like, the first 20 pages or so? hints for the rest of the short story: there's school uniforms, beer, and long-winded speeches). but still. reading this all actually had my jaw on the floor, because what do you mean that the events of the first half of chapter one of bungo stray dogs is an osamu dazai reference. like surely this is not all just coincidence.

in conclusion: asagiri is a madman. the literary references go crazy. what else am i missing. i need to read more

The Art of Fire - Bungou Stray Dogs

Hii!! This is a bsd fanfic Im starting. Its more of a BSD x OC fic tho, with Akutagawa x OC as well bc I love him so much I just had to write a fanfic with him in it. It follows the plot of the original storyline, with my own small twist ;)

Prologue

A sky of red and orange blanketed Yokohama. People scurried across streets and into their homes. Some were welcomed home by a family and a home-cooked meal. Some came home only to be greeted by unwashed dishes and an unmade bed. But despite what was waiting behind the closed doors of their house, they had a home to go back to, a place where they felt safe and comforted.

Atsushi didn't know what to consider a home.

It had almost been seven months since he had passed the entrance exam and joined the Armed Detective Agency. He had been given clothes, a phone and even a room to stay in.

The detectives of the agency were kind. He was not used to their friendliness and constant smiles, especially those of Kenji, a young boy who used to live in a village before he was recruited by the president. Of course, even though Kunikida would lecture him daily and Ranpo would make him go on snack-runs, Atsushi knew that they were good people. He was grateful.

The glowing sun set over the horizon, turning the sky into a mixture of pink and orange.

The detectives were gathered around a conference table. Kunikida stood in front of a whiteboard as the others listened carefully (excluding Ranpo).

"A week before this, a body was found in a horrific state," Kunikida started, presenting a few photos pasted on the board. He pointed to the first: "Misa Aishina, aged 16."

The photo displayed a gruesome sight. A girl's body (though one couldn't really tell that if it was a girl at all), was laid down on her back, half naked with only a torn skirt covering her. The body was painted with blood, creating a small pool of it around her. Her face was beaten and so damaged that it was completely unrecognizable. She was in an uncomfortable position, legs bending in a way only possible if the bones had been utterly crushed.

"Two days ago, the mother of Aishina requested an investigation," Kunikida continued. "She claimed that the police had no luck at all on finding the culprit.

Kunikida turned to Ranpo as the others followed.

"Earlier, Ranpo had already deduced the culprit," he showed multiple photos of men. "They kidnap young girls and force them into prostitution to make money. Their location has been discovered. The president has ordered for all the agents to be dispatched as it is not known exactly how many men are there, nor victims. We have to leave in 20 minutes, the faster the better."

"The location is in an abandoned hotel, located about 15 minutes from here by car. Tanizaki-" Kunikida looked at Naomi's brother. "Will use his ability to sneak in first, then tell us about how many men to prepare for. Followed by me, Kenji, Kyouka and Atsushi to take them out, then Dazai, Yosano, Ranpo."

Atsushi, Kunikida, Kenji and Kyouka stood in front of an old and seemingly abandoned seven-storied hotel. The walls stood firm, the window frames strong, glass triple glazed and some were shattered and boarded with wooden planks. All in all, it looked like a movie-set, one fit for a horror film. The only give-away was the odor, well, that and the dust. It emitted an eerie and creepy aura, sending shivers down Atsushi's spine.

They waited as Kunikida tapped his foot impatiently. He was wearing an ear-piece so that Tanizaki and him could communicate.

Atsushi couldn't hear what Tanizaki was saying, but he knew something was up by the way Kunikida's eyes widened in shock. Swiftly, the dirty-blond male made a run for the crooked door.

"Kunikida-?" Atsushi exclaimed, running in after him. Kyouka and Kenji followed closely behind. They entered the basement of the hotel by going in a door with a broken lock. The strong smell of blood clogged his nose, making him wince in disgust as he ran after the dark silhouette of a man taller than himself. Immediately, they were faced with the bodies of four dead men. The skin of all of them was burnt completely. Only after giving them a glance, Kunikida continued.

They following a series of twist and turns as their footsteps echoied against the deathly silence of the building. Kunikida steadily pressed his ear to every door they came across, before swinging it open to reveal disappointment. The four reached a dark hallway, ending with a large wooden door. Atsushi assumed that behind those doors were where the girls were kept.

Kunikida pushed the door open, its hinges creaking as he did. The scene that greeted him was a macabre one.

The room itself was big but stuffy as it lacked the presence of windows and was covered with a dim, dark grey color. But none of those were what caught the silver-haired boy's attention. Burnt corpse littered almost the entire room.

Much like the ones they met before this, they were all burnt from a result of fire. Atsushi spotted Tanizaki's figure just a few feet in front of them, who was standing as still as a board.

Kenji's mouth hanged agape with shock. Though Kyouka's cool composure didn't leave her, her eyes slightly widened as her grip on her phone tightened, preparing to summon demon snow in case of an attack.

Kunikida turned to Atsushi.

"Get the others, now."

"A fire-manipulating ability?" Atsushi asked his senior, Kunikida, as the latter nodded.

"This isn't the only case," the blond continued, a stern expression settled on his face. "Just this morning, there has been several reports of the burning of buildings. After exanimating the burn marks on the bodies, it is found that the fire must have been at least above 1400 degree Celsius."

"And there's only one person who can produce flames as strong as this-," said Dazai, stretching his hands behind his back.

"Lady Hanabi."

soukoku is bsd original name for the dzi and chuu duo, it's not a thing in bungou to alchemist or other bungou media. though, people do ship them in many non-bsd bungou media too, but like said it's not their ship name, or a term used anywhere else than in bsd. please refrain from using it when talking about other versions of those two, you're being rude to the irl writers too when you reduce charactes based on them to something that only one series out of hundreds uses 😔 i know you mean nothing bad, but just had to point out this. if you have to use ship name, it's dazanaka/dazachuu (or nakadaza/chuudaza depending on which dynamics you prefer for the ship). japanese fandoms for the various bungou medias haven't really fully decided on which reading to use for chuu, as his surname and first name both start with the same kanji, that can be read either as "naka" or "chuu". and as dzi is a surname, some find it weird to only refer to chuu with his first name when the other one is always called by his surname, meanwhile some are totally all about calling the short guy chuu anyways even if it's a bit unfair. but the japanese bunal fandom mostly uses dazanaka (or nakadaza for inverted dynamics). so yep, pick your choice, but no skk ever again for bunal or other bungou media versions of them, thank you. have a nice day o/

ps. there's also a comprehensive info on pixiv's dictionary regarding the bsd ship (https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E5%A4%AA%E4%B8%AD), and it also mentions bunal's variation (https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E5%A4%AA%E4%B8%AD%28%E6%96%87%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AB%29) which has same ship name. people add (bsd) or (bunal) behind the ship name to differentiate them. among western fans it's especially seen on ao3 when people tag their fics. you can use translator to get a gist of the links' content if you don't know japanese!

Sooo who wants to help me make a 2D horror game with a mute child protagonist where every character is voiced by birds instead of humans, constantly making the player uneasy whenever they realize that, no matter what they hear or who they speak to, there will never be any semblance of humanity? Bonus points for parts of the plot showcasing and mocking how stupid humans often are, forcing people to see the humanity they accept without question for what it really is. Forcing them to think twice about their position and take note of where society fails, with the subtle undertone that humans are just animals too.
