Iv put way too much though into an ace attorney au for dungeon meshi, and idk if this has been done before, but here's my take-

Chillchuck

Chillchuck would be a prosecutor - probably the Winston Payne of the au. He is smug and overconfident but loses his shit way too easily in court and lies/manipulates evidence (not that uncommon for aa prosecutors tbh but in a more overt way)-

Also he would need to stand on things to be tall enough to see over the table and I think that would be funny/ provide a good gimic for his character.

Marcille

Marcille would be the falsely accused but with kinda solid evidence for why they are being accused- she seems to have a proclivity to be in bad situations but I do not think she would actually kill anyone unless it was 100% valid and deserved + I think it was probably a wrong place wrong time situation and she was littraly just existing and found a crime scene and tried to take manners into her own hands wich made her 2000% more suspicious.

Laios

Laios would be a defense attorney that knows all of the material and what he's supposed to do in theory -but is over exited to use the knowledge and gets carried away and jumps to conclusions a bit to hastily

Falin

Falin would be the younger sidekick type characters that the aa protagonists always have that end up being very useful at keeping the protagonists (laios in this case) grounded and pointing out pretty obvious stuff they didn't get + her and marcellus can be childhood friends so in a case where marcellus is the defendant it can cause dynamics ++ her going missing could be an overarching plot

Kabru

Kabru would also be a prosecutor- probobly the main one- that kinda hated laios at first but they grow to kinda get along like they hang out outside of work but kabru still things he's a freak and keeps his work/confidentiality above there friendship (like a pheonix-edgeworth situation but with less gay undertones sorry laios x kabru enjoyers). He would be relitivly collected in the courtroom until laios said some unhinged shit that turns out to be correct somehow

Senshi

Senshi is the only one I can't figure out tbh I dont think he would be a prosecutor because that doesn't seem in character but I don't think he would be a defense attorney because he would think it's silly/not very affective- I genuinely just think he would hate the court system as a whole finding it unfair and under developed.

I could see him as a re-acuring side characters that comes up once in a while who just happens to be a key witness or comes to help in some way but idk.

Speed round for everyone else

- shuro is a witness that seems pretty confident in the testimony, and you only find contradictions on a technicality and/or small detail

- cithis is a prosecutor on par with von'carma (probably spelled that wrong) senior- aggressive and tries to end the case asap whatever the cost

- namari is a defense attorney that seems very put off at first but does what she can for her clients

- izutsumi is an unreliable witnes that ends up giving away vital info after being pressed enough

- mithrun barely survived an attempted murder and maizuru made you take his case

- sissel did a murder but feels justified (hell, he might even be justified depending on the case)

Plz note this theoretically would take place in an ace attorney style world that just happens to have multiple diffrent races so magic probobly would not be as common as in dungeon meshi but it's not off the table

Also yeah Royalau is quite intense so I'd definitely be careful and always read the tags when trying to read those. I've read all that's posted currently (dude I check my ao3 all the time for those updates I am OBSESSED with that series man💔) and some of the chapters are definitely understandable to be harder to stomach than others (I mean not for me I eat that stuff all the time but for others who aren't used to reading that I get it) .

Honestly for dynamics of Ink, I really like any dynamic hes put in. Villan, 'hero', neutral, main char (<-i like to read these ones they itch a spot on my smooth little dog brain-- specifically fanfics by I'm_Sorry_Buddy are what really give me that satisfaction for Ink fics) really just if a fic includes him in anyway and it's written well or has a unique plot then I'll be invested and happily read.

As for character dynamics like Reaper, Error, Ink and Fresh I think its super neat! I honestly REALLY REALLY like creative destruction (that's what I call Reaper, Error, and Ink tbh) I just find the fact that you can do so much with that trio to be absolutely fascinating, especially if you consider lore points and everything!!! Like you can do fluff, angst, literally whatever you can think of and they can fit almost perfectly into it. (Also the angst with those three can be ABBBSOLUTELY scrumptious

Now if im thinking about adding all four of those little guys together it think you can get smth very interesting, I think they'd all be very chaotic emotionally tbh. Their dynamic is something I would slap under a microscope and squint at very heavily tbh-- not in a bad type of way, but in a way that has me goin: "hmmm... those are some funny little guys...". But I think it has the opportunity to have interesting points tbh, considering how their personalitis would go together, the different lore, etc. I think them as a queerplatonic/a dynamic as a whole would be fun though! Not opposed to it, I find it to seem very enjoyable.

As for seeing all four of them im not sure??? I know I've seen Creative Destruction before, and im pretty sure I've seen Fresh, Ink and Error stuff, but I dont recall seeing all four mashed up into one post/art piece.

11 Three tropes that are fine but overrated

oh gosh hmm. some of these are gonna come across as hypocritical lmao and also insert a healthy dose of "for me specifically" but: (1) i think soulbond/soulmark tropes can be done well, but mid executions of the trope focus a lot on ~finding~ the person rather than interrogating what it means to have bonds or marks or things of that nature, and leave a lot of interesting nuances about choice and free will and conflict between romantic relationships and other things you might want (career, friendship, autonomy, etc) on the table. i wish more takes on the trope let it be messy! (2) hurt/comfort done well is really fun but when people are just like. aggressively making their little guy sad and pathetic and a poor little meow meow whose never done anything wrong it gets grating. i love a sad guy but i prefer when they're sad because of shit they did to themselves instead of external factors. (3) curtain fic/established relationship stuff can be fun sometimes but like. there still needs to be a smidgen of conflict or growth or change or a shift for me to be interested. there has to be a point imo! even when i write my silly self-indulgent post-fic time stamps its important to me that there's a point to it beyond just "im love them" (though im DO love them)

i think the thing is, there can always be a new dimension to how these two idiots fall in love!!! every story is an opportunity to get at some new nugget of like, how people are, or what it is to be vulnerable and open and willing to risk heartache. with two different people you have so many opportunities to look at different shades and facets of their character. especially with rpf where real life events can shape characterization in real time. The Trade opened up a whole new dimension of matthew that creates new angles to investigate matthew&leon and what it means to fall in love with someone thousands of miles away and who you see even less (or, someday, for my break up/make up agenda)! jamie getting dealt to philly opens up new ways to poke at the jamie/trevor relationship by adding distance and tragedy and the potential of falling for other people! even picking a new trope or time period is just so fun for being like, now how would they be under THESE circumstances? also like, i LOVE flip-flopping who gets to be down bad immediately and who is oblivious because it's not only a fun creative challenge but also just opens up new worlds. idk! there's so many possibilities and so many facets to explore and to me that's delightful.

37 Do you research before writing or while you write? Is it fun or boring for you?

id say i do some up front, just to nail down the broad beats of the story and to minimize how much reworking i have to do later on (or for period type fics, to make sure that i dont introduce plot points that simply cant have happened in that time frame!), and some i do as i go -- for example, for a while there i just HAD the battles of alberta in 21-22 down pat because i was using them so often to shape story beats, but the games in between i had to look up as i went. i also am constantly pulling from new articles or features that offer new bits of characterization i want to use. tbh with the current wip i DO feel very wobbly because i don't have my normal anchors of the schedule/have to make things up, which is simultaneously freeing and hard because it's so much easier for me to write about sports games that really happened than the fake ones im constructing for the narratives 😂. but yeah id say mostly i research as i go!

For creek episodes - there's "tweek x Craig" (my first episode!!!) and "put it down" which is sometime after the aforementioned episode (my second episode-), there's also "tweek vs Craig" which takes place much before tweek x Craig but it doesn't really have much of an impact on their relationship afterwards, though I really like all those episodes especially put it down, for some reason, it actually helped me understand relationships and emotions better ??????? Even though the advice is pretty simple it still helped

Creek also makes minor appearances in splatty tomato (though the episode is mostly about Cartman and Heidis toxic relationship), and buddha box (ep focused on isolating urself from societu pretty much), though they're there !!

As for heidi there's also doubling down which takes place before splatty tomato, and also put it down where her n cartman's relationship is paralleled to creek in a way

This is random but theres also episodes focused on gay acceptance, such as "big gay Al's gay boat ride" (aired in 1997!!!), where Stan learns to accept his dog for being gay essentially, and "cartman sucks" which is actually pretty cursed because half of the plot is about Cartman sexually assaulting butters, uhm but the other half is mostly an anti conversion therapy message (though there's a lot of moments referencing suicide rates in conversion camps)(episode aired in 2008) which is when butters was sent to a conversion camp

Speaking of Butters he's absolutely horridly traumatized and abused and if you'd like to see it on screen there's "butter's very own episode" and "Marjorine" ,both are dark as hell though so uh tw for murder attempt, referenced suicide, and uhh horror themes in general ???

OH ALSO RIGHT. THE TRANSGINGER EPISODE sorry j lost track of my words. It's called "The Cissy". I like it though some people consider it to be anti trans I beg to differ, it's mostly about gendered bathrooms and pop singer Lorde though

If you want to be cursed to hell u can watch "Scott tennorman must die" though it really freaked me out even though I exactly knew the plot twist I was still horrified lmao

This is exactly why I don’t even venture into F/F tags. Seeing dicks being inserted into F/F ships hurts so much for so many reasons…the main ones being how personal it is to me, and how strong the pressures on lesbians from the trans community to like dick are. It’s something that already upsets me irl, and I don’t want to see it in fiction too.

And tbh I’ve gotten the same way with M/M ships. Maybe I’m just sensitive but it hurts so much just to see people straightwashing same sex ships, that I’m not interested in wading through that shit just to find one fic that respects homosexuality.

And filtering tags only goes so far, because I’ve run into fics that just has surprise het sex in the middle with no tags.

I find it’s especially prevalent with fandoms involving some sort of magic system (which is why I haven’t even given Buffy or First Kill fics a chance. I’d rather live in blissful ignorance like I wish I had with GO, than be hit with people hettifying ships that mean a lot to me). No matter the magic system, people will find a way to use it to give a female character a dick or a male character a pussy. Because straight sex is oh so important to write all the goddamn time.

first of all i love how even oscar’s coworker thinks that him and logan are in a relationship. ‘he’s just touchy’ i mean sure touchy is definitely when you have sex with your friend, make out with your friend and whatnot, that’s just him being ‘touchy’ obviously. if a coworker is saying that youre and you still arent convinced idk how oblivious you can be

and logan saying that the best parts of him are oscar, i mean yeah youve kissed youve fucked and youre both inseparable so that makes sense i guess but i love though that kyle is all so confused about this everytime logan is like ‘you know what i mean’ bc no logan i dont think kyle has a life long friend that hes done more than friend things with before

speaking of more than friend things, i still dont know how they can call themselves just friends when they’ve now both fingered each other and one has eaten the other out (first thing i thought of when i saw that scene was a similar scene in shark bait). i know i keep saying this but every chapter i always think ‘wtf do you mean that you’re just friends???’ and logan saying that he likes oscar whilst he’s naked is not helping my point

i have so far finished only one (1) long-form writing project of mine. it's online, far more people read it than i ever thought would see it. like. so many more people. omfg.

this is still so daunting to me lmao, and i'm... proud of it! yes! but i also feel a little embarrassed about it tbh?

the story im specifically talking about is Odd Inheritance, which is a short little story i wrote about a trans girl realizing she's trans set loosely in pathfinder, and i have SO many thoughts about it now, about half a year after it's final chapter was released.

i wrote it in two weeks in a sprint during one of my study breaks, and i wrote it completely by the seat of my pants with no plan, and i think that shows. there are some extraneous plot threads in it that make no sense, side characters that feel very flat, and some characters appear less than i would've wanted them to. i dont share it around whenever i talk about my own stuff because im a little like "eh, i can do better now!" about it.

saying all that though, i reread it recently and i think it still has... charm? there are bits in there that i really really like, little nuggets in the story that elevate it despite some of the other parts perhaps being not as good, and overall, now that im more acquainted with how it actually is rather than the version i built up in my head, i actually shared it around a little more!

that is not to say that i dont think it could have used, perhaps, an extra editing run. an overall look at the plot threads and perhaps a pruning of some things, but hey, that comes with experience, right? i cant diss it too much, as, lets be honest here, its still the only story ive actually finished. (though i have at least two more fully outlined that im simply waiting for inspiration to kick me in the ass again so that i can start em proper, looking at you Dragon story that ive posted about before)

anyways. all thats to say that im currently in the process of rewriting it. im giving it that final little editing pass, mostly just... for me? it holds a special place in my heart as the thing that connected me with a bunch of other people that i've now gotten to know, and i want to do the ideas and character justice. if i manage to finish this little rewrite (this time with a plan, gasp) im gonna put it up on itch and actually do some more illustrations for it, hopefully.

tbh just Being In Character. That's what I get the most compliments on. also grammar and spelling, that kind of thing.

I skip over description and setting scenes as much as I possibly can, and it's not necessarily that I Can't as much as I Don't Care To... I get away with it because it's fanfiction but I'd like to... start trying a bit harder at it

I guess if I had reason to? If it fit with the flow/plot of the fic, there was good reason to do it, and it was in one of the only two other languages I speak... I don't see there being a reason for that in this fandom though lol

I don't think we'll see much more of Atari's character in the future tbh. Way more important characters than her have already been sidelined, Lu being the biggest example. Heisuke wasn’t treated fairly in the jail arc or even in the current one. Natsuki’s role was pushed to the background, and Toramafu are just there💔 The only one we’ll definitely see more of is Amane... and maybe Natsuki? since he's important and popular. Idk how, but I do believe that natsushin will never get sidelined🙂‍↕️ As for Atari? It’s probably the endgame for her, unless Suzuki decides to use her again as a plot device

I dont like big talking but it really seems she will get sideline....even though her losing her powers makes sense in the narrative, i think its pretty sad that how the author used her in the story. I used to think lu got the worst treatment between the fem characters until i saw atari. (But then again its not just atari but we dont know about other new characters as well. For example tanabata. Even tho he is cute, i dont find him interesting yet lol. Between the new characters, imo most interesting one is torres and i do believe that he is also sensei's fave character ahaha but unfortunately since he is an oldie, majority of fandom doesnt care about him)

Poor lu deserved sm better 😭 i know she isnt into violence but maaaan i wish we have seen her more. At least heisuke had his own moments! He fought kamihate (who is an order member) and in the jail arc, when he protected atari, i think he was pretty cool. Ofc the jail arc was mostly about shin and when that soulmate stuffs happened, i was thinking maybe thats why heisuke was in the jail cause that would make sense in the narrative but didnt happen like that....

I think toramaru and mafuyu's stories has finished in the museum arc. They are both kids, so i dont think we will see them in the middle of battle. (but that doesnt mean they wont be useful!) I want to see amane meeting his father again 😭😭 we didnt even get our baby boy's own cover yet and i hope sensei didnt forget about this at all :( natsuki is so loved by the fandom! Hehe im sure our weapon maker boy will try to help them with his weapons! (i want to see him bring shin's gloves back so bad....) ofc sensei loves his this duo and i think he will give us crumbs once again kdhsjdj i really want to see natsushin fighting side by side together 😭💗 pls make this happen!

🎃 Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi (10/7-x) overall, not what i expected, but not bad. only got thru half the series in spooky month, will finish eventually.

ep1 (10/7): kinda slow, but not boring. the final shot of the woman in the doorway gave me goosebumps.

ep2 (10/10): first third/half SUPER effective for me, esp the whole part where ichikawa's flashlight would turn off at the same point in the room. creepy. but then the last part was genuinely ?????? super intriguing but idk really what happened? the metaphysical/scifi aspects weren't ~scary~ to me but i keep thinking abt the episode so

ep3 (10/10): monster horror isnt my thing so eh, but the revelation at the end that those 2 characters are slowly turning into kappa like its an infection was neat.

ep4 (10/11): favorite so far, loved the spatial/time manipulation. but the scene of them time traveling. lol. lmao even.

ep5 (10/11): really liking how each episode is its own thing but clearly pointing to something bigger connecting everything. real curious abt what kudo "sees" since his coma incident.

🎃 the void (10/12) liked. FANTASTIC practical effects, wowzers. kinda okay story, more aesthetics than plot but w/e. BIG silent hill vibes though a cult facilitating a "god" to be born, resurrection/reincarnation, physical manifestations of guilt and grief, etc. but like.... spacey/cosmic horror. v different from most mid-2010s or even modern day horror and i appreciate that.

🎃 the empty man (10/13) idk. intriguing but i really dont get the whole part about the people committing suicide. i feel like this is one of those movies i need to deep dive ppls meta analysis to really ~get it~. bc i don't really. honestly my favorite part was the very beginning w the freaky skeleton. what is he transmitting............

🎃 noroi: the curse (10/13) eh. kinda slow. unclear on certain plot points: what was the significance of kana being psychic and drawing that symbol/face/mask? what's up with the boy - another medium? hori was v distracting and borderline exploitative. liked how the seemingly disjointed segments started to connect together, but unfortunately didnt go all the way (see ? above) and too much unresolved. seen better japanese horror and found footage horror tbh sorry

🎃 late night with the devil (10/14) first off -1000000 for using genAI fuck that. second, god the beginning was as boring & cringey as a real late night talk show. which like, yeah ofc but also. i dont want to watch that so no ty. but lilly's appearance at the end was v cool, split head, coursing electrical energy. really liked that a lot. overall better than i thought it was gonna be, but just to the side of okay.

🎃 lake mungo (10/19) quite sad. being haunted by your future death reminds me of nell from haunting of hill house. alice meeting with the psychic and seeing from the perspective of her ghost in the future, paralleled with her mother in the future doing the same and not sensing alice anymore.... big sad. :( some of the spooky stuff did get to me. the recording of alice seeing her future dead body and the reveal that the neighbor was lurking in the house in one of the recordings especially. wtf grossssssss. overall more sad than scary, but i liked it. more effective for me than i thought it would be after reading reddit posts hating it. i feel like i need to be a defender of it now lmao

🎃 event horizon (10/22) so far INCREDIBLE visuals, giving big hellraiser vibes with the disfigured/cut up bodies & the elaborate incomprehensible yet decorative engine brings to mind a mix of the lament configuration and biblically accurate angels. incredible. -- why only trauma hallucinations from a few of the crew? the rest were just peachy keen? not a smidge of trauma? bummer tbh -- hot damn the gore visuals are blink and u miss it but sick as hell -- but what happened with justin? rescue crew said he was alive but like.... mentally???? -- pacing felt just a titch off, like shtf so close to the end i feel like the descent could have been smoother, but otherwise i really loved this one

🎃 the exorcist (book) (10/1 - 10/23) liked WAY more than i thought i would. gonna be 4 stars for reference. 2 things i disliked: chris' internal monologues were annoying and shes more than a bit of a yuppie (the point i guess), AND the fact that psychokinesis is just a FACT in this world (ie possession can't be concluded by moving objects / mind reading bc those are observable in clinical settings in ppl with mental issues) bothered me so much!!! like..... if a DEMON can read your mind, move objects, as established w regan, you can't just chalk it up to NO WAY being possession. wtf???? anyway, everything else was great. really liked the reveals (regan's paint found at the church desecration, regan speaking backwards & mentioning merrin before he's even seen on page). the foreshadowing of karras' demise. very disturbing scenes iykyk, and even the detective parts were fun in the end. dunno if i'll read the sequel (legion) but i've heard the show is v good? 👀

🎃 hell house llc (10/25) 1 (10/25): love, it's a classic at this point, most of the scares dont get to me but surprisingly a few still do, solid ending 2 (10/25): kind of worse acting than the first but still liked, enjoy where the overarching plot is going re drawing people to the house 3 (10/25): definitely upped the production value, the scene of the actress in the basement with the clown is top tier but otherwise it was okay. first is still the best tbh, feels like they explained too much and im more of a fan of ambiguity. since the first 3 films take place in the same building, there's a weird feeling of familiarity & coziness lmao, i could see this series being a comfort rewatch fr origins (10/26): margot was definitely at the fair where tully/cult was kidnapping ppl for the abaddon hotel sacrifices, huh. -- did NO ONE think to check rebecca's cam w/ the body on the bed???? like they've seen other proof of the supernatural but cmon -- ohh that whole scene of rebecca screensharing w her boss and the pictures leading right up to her bedroom door grossssssss bleghhhh i love it -- overall liked this one a lot. still confused abt some stuff (where was the dad's body? why was patrick's arm better? his place in the cult, are the souls (patricks?) bound to the clown costumes etc), but super effective horror for me. sometimes i dont need all the qs answered u know?

🎃 the outwaters (10/26) ppl on reddit said they hated this as much as skinamarink & both are deathly boring but i LOVED skinamarink so lets gooooo -- 38 minutes in. is like...... no one going to aknowledge these sounds???? -- i get the bugs being creepy but are these donkeys supposed to be ominous? bc they just look like sweet cute babies 2 me -- these are the WORST flashlights in the entire world my GOD. -- suddenly, screaming flesh snakes. sure why not -- ooohh space time fuckery? is robbie the axe man? -- i literally cannot see what's happen 90% of the time, its like trying to watch a movie through a pinprick. like near the end he could have been pointing a flashlight at a bbq beef brisket for all i could tell. certainly a choice meant to invoke the claustrophobia and isolation and confusion of the pov, but missed the mark. by a lot. -- theres some neat ideas in here (time travel/time loop where robbie is the one killed and also the killer, with cosmic horror to boot), if i could see anything. loved skinamarink, super effective for me and though it was grainy at least you could SEE, this was. eh. i will say the sound design was great. would have loved to see literally any part of the entity near the end that's making it! the end itself was actually good imo, grotesque but better than seeing a 90% black screen tbh. potential.

🎃 lovely, dark, and deep (10/29) very interesting visuals, kinda cosmic horror in the woods. reminiscent of the "stairs in the woods" and "search and rescue" nosleep stories. also big PT vibes, especially in the scenes in the house, very cyclical/loop in nature but different traumatic events each go thru. love a horror movie that doesnt hold your and and leaves the interpretation up to the viewer. backrooms-esque liminal space? purgatory? mc processing her grief and trauma? dream sequence? hell? are the woods just real fucked up in this natl park? yes. (unfortunately?) it was kinda explained at the end, but i still really liked it. i dunno now the mc could keep working as a ranger, knowing that they just.... let this shit happen. and to perpetuate it....... i do wonder abt the ranger in the beginning, making the choice to get taken. what was his story?

🎃 a house at the bottom of a lake (10/29 - 10/31) 4.5 stars. idk what exactly happened, but i really loved it. great atmosphere (dark, under water, claustrophobic - frankly do not understand people who say this isnt horror lmao), easy to read in a day, perfect for halloween (when I read it). i interpret the ending as james and amelia still being under the obsession of the house, possibly still underwater. like the past 12-or-so days was a "test" of some sort. what finding the house in the real world means, i dont know, but i'm all for horror not holding my hand and it just being about ~the vibes~ which this one nailed for me. the scenes where the flashlights go off? and then house lights turn on? chilled. incredible what you can enjoy when u dont have a hater yappin in ur ear that it sucks <3

Just gonna dump my thoughts about nightbringer even though im very late to the party

But first i would like to address something.

Why are the devs making an entire new game anyway?

Aside from trying to pull in cash from both games, they said that theres alot of new stuff they had planned to add to the og obey me but it would be too much of an update so they decided to just make an entire different game.

Anyway for my actual thoughts:

Personally i think that we really shouldn't send too big of hate to the devs about the fact that the og game will not have new lessons.

I get it, you spent a long time to build your cards only for it to be useless in the end and the devs just confirmed that moving your cards will not be a feature, but like think about it, would you like to try and play nightbringer while having to keep up with the new lessons in the og game?? Thatd be more tiring than the back to back events tbh. And the story will eventually be countinued in nightbringer as said by the devs so we wont have to worry about being left on a cliffhanger.

And its alright to feel that way anyway, i just dont think we should be too harsh about it like how I saw some people comment.

I have high hopes for nightbringer actually, i hope they dont fuck up the execution yk? And i am really attached to the obey me characters to much.

Theres stuff that i would like to have in the game, like more demonic personalities, less romance and more lore based, for it to be 95% story and 5% events, more angsty, less grindy, the rythm game graph to not be too hard, more tsl/ruri chan lore, better writing, the graphics not look too bad, a good explanation for the weird plot holes in the game (why the fuck is there a video chat feature there seriously), NO REWRITES ON THE STORY IN THE FUTURE (really im serious) etc. And most of them are litterally unlikely or confirmed to not be the case so you can see im also mourning.

One big fear of mine is that theyll abandon the og game in the future. Sure it might be less taxing to us players to play both games buuut idk man it just doesn't sit right in my gut.

Anyway thats all i have for now, hope shit doesn't go out the window for nightbringer.

i beat sonic frontiers and i have many thoughts so imma just compile them here. overall im really happy with the game and i’d love see sega build off of this going forward. spoilers ofc

the good:

-open world (or ‘open zone’ as they called it) works surprisingly well for sonic. i hate open world games so the fact i like what they did here certainly means they got something right lmao

-sonic controls really well. it’s not perfect and i wish they’d refine some physics but i was so worried about this game because of the early footage making it look automated and stiff. im really happy to say it didnt feel like that at all. blasting through the islands and stringing together rails and platforming and just doing sonic stuff feels amazing and like it justifies the space being used. this and elden ring are both unironically amazing examples of how to do open world well.

-the combat and expanding sonic’s moveset was long overdue honestly. there’s only so much you can accomplish with homing attacks. the cyloop and various other attacks added were fun additions even if overall it’s quite simplistic (definitely no devil may cry lol). im not sure how other people like this change? i found it snappy and satisfying but ive seen some say it slows the game down for them? good thing about it is you can automate it if you dont want to deal with it at all.

-the story is actually engaging and taking itself seriously. it also expands on established series lore (so many callbacks to adventure 1) and it’s very nice to see. the plot isnt all that unique or original but it’s been so long since it felt like the game’s were trying to tell a story that wasn’t some bullshit meta nonsense or complete half assed shit like forces.

-the characters are the narrative highlight, same as above, they’re written like actual people and not mouthpieces for stupid jokes. it made me remember why i like these characters. the new addition, sage, was also handled well i think, even though she’s pretty annoyingly vague at the start. she has good development and her relationship with eggman is pretty heartwarming.

-the BOSSES are the definite highlight of the game. the fourth titan and final boss is an interesting, though kind of underwhelming fight, but the other 3 are absolute PEAK. holy shit. best bosses sonic has ever had for sure

-banger music. see above, the bosses have the best tracks in the game but i also found myself really enjoying the overworld themes and cyberspace tracks. sonic games usually have amazing osts and this one is no exception.

-the last island’s cyberspace stages were very solid and i enjoyed them

neutral:

-i can take or leave the baby mode puzzles scattered around tbh. some of the puzzles were satisfying to do but others were just like... walk over and tap a button. not obtrusive but also not really engaging

-i actually did end up liking the overworlds despite initially thinking they looked like awful generic botw inspired crap, but i still think i’d like to see more stylized worlds that are characteristic of sonic going forward. it might have made sense in this game given the lore of the koco/ancients and how desolate and isolated they are but yeah, they’re not the most visually appealing at times- especially the third island which is quite barren for large stretches of it. so i guess this is more a future note?

the bad:

-the cyberspace stages. like i said above, i felt the last island ones were the strongest, but most are just kind of... there. they use themes and aesthetics pulled from green hill, chem plant and sky sanct (as well as an ambiguous city stage) and this is the one area of the game that made it obvious to me sega doesnt want to move on completely. i would have preferred they make new original stages but if they HAVE to use past ones, wouldnt it make sense to use adventure stages or something, given the story relevance? man im just so sick of green hill lmao. 

-on top of this, the physics in these stages are pretty bad. so many times ive just blasted off the side for no reason. it feels like these were slapped in last minute or something, like they’re not compatible with the engine. they break up the gameplay pretty awkwardly and i found myself leaving them until i absolutely had to do them

-there’s unfortunately a lot of polish missing from the animations. it’s serviceable and definitely not the worst sonic has had but i noticed quite a lot of snapping/popping. even some of the cutscenes look dull in the character animation

-polish missing from the game performance as well. most egregious were the various pop-ins that people have been pointing out from the very first gameplay footage. it’s pretty ugly sometimes and can make navigation a little awkward. the game functions perfectly fine but i really hope they can get more people/time to add finishing touches like this in their next game. i didn’t get frame drops or anything, but it still didn’t feel quite optimized. it would be really nice to have a sonic game that you can say is all around polished and amazing for once

SO YEAH it’s got jank. it’s a bit experimental and weird. but it also does so much right and its flaws didnt take away from the fact i was having so much fun while playing it. i was immersed, i wanted to see where the story went, i loved how sonic controlled. i loved that there was a clear direction for this game and that it actually felt like it was trying to be something. im just so happy that for the first time in what. 10 years? i came away from a sonic game feeling satisfied and optimistic about where they can go from here ^w^
