WHERE: sassa's room. WHO: @sassa-fiske & nat.
Nat paced in front of Sassa's door for a moment, wondering if involving her friend was crossing an uncrossable line. She'd only plotted and schemed in the safety of her own mind where she could still claim that war had not been officially declared. But getting someone else involved— getting Sassa involved— was one step closer to an ever-creeping inevitability.
In the end, her fist rapped against the door and she waited, picking at the skin around her nails in a show of nerves until Sassa opened. She straightened. The visage of her friend bolstered her and she dropped her hands to her sides. "I need your help. Or, actually. I need your expertise." She raised a brow and pointed past Sassa, into her room. "Can I come in?"

WHERE: commencement gala. midway into the night. WHO: @sassa-fiske & jesse.
Three sheets to the wind would have described Jesse hours earlier. Now, with one hand running along the wall as if it was the only thing keeping him upright, time came and went between blinks of absolute nothingness. His father mingled mere feet away, laughing and charming the room effortlessly, and the pure, unadulterated hatred he harbored for the man had driven him deep into his cups, deep into his pockets, and as far into his mind as he could retreat.
So when his view of Donovan was eclipsed by a black dress draped impeccably over curves he couldn't help but trace with his eyes, he took the distraction for what it was. Coming up beside her, he leaned against the wall. The picture of casual even when it was necessary for balance. "You still interested in a secret?" he asked, gripping the neck of a bottle he couldn't remember snagging and bringing it to his lips for a sip. "Because I'm not gonna lie, I've been curious about the good reason."

Jesse squinted his eyes at Sassa, mouth curving in a drunken grin. His laugh was a little louder than he intended as he imagined he had her all figured out. "Something tells me that you always get what you want." His head canted to one side, studying her a little more closely. "I guess the question is, what do you want right now?"
Tumblr media
Sassa's head angled towards one shoulder with almost predatory grace, a gleam coming into her eyes. "And why is that?" She blinked, a certain coyness in her expression, even as she dragged her gaze over Jesse's frame. "Regardless of what your mistaken interpretation would be, surely I'd get what I wanted out of that, no?"

✍︎ @sassa-fiske
The sight of a dying sun, reluctantly disappearing behind distant hills, distracted him from the bartender preparing his drinks. For a moment, Edward quietly watched as the skyline of downtown Ogden darkened and a cool autumn breeze began to blow on the leaves of trees and ruffle with his hair.
Sir. A voice broke him out of his daze. The bartender placed his and Sassa’s drinks on the counter. “Thank you.” He muttered before handing him a bill and picking up the glasses.
He took his time walking back to their table, eyes still gazing over the landscape that only C. Ling could offer. It seemed like the world slowed down a little when fall came around – especially in the Northeast, where the cold months could be unforgiving – and Edward very much appreciated this sensation that he got just by watching people go about their lives in a chilly evening, leaving work, running errands, doing groceries, and then going home. He couldn’t explain it, really. It was more a feeling than a rational line of thought. But it kept him very much hypnotized.
“Sorry I took so long. Bartender kept me waiting.” He lied as he reached their table, setting Sassa’s glass in front of her and taking the seat by her side. “Did you see they’re doing Barbenheimer on campus this week? We should go together again.”

PASIGLABAN
This marks my first ever grand rally.
I remember the excitement I have when I and my cousins are planning on how to go to Emerald Avenue, Pasig. Before that, we’ve witness grand rallies and astonish on the number of people attending. Hence, our weeklong planning on what to do and how to go to the venue. Couple of days before the rally, my shift schedule changed. Saddened a bit because my shift starts from 7 am until 4 pm. The event will start at 5 pm. I am from Makati City so I have to still allot a time to travel to Pasig. Honestly, part of my mind started thinking of not going anymore. Although I am working from home, and as someone whose social energy is low, I have some hesitations. My cousins went straight to the rally around 2 pm since its Sunday and they do not have work or online classes. While I still finished my shift. All while also getting ready to come to Pasig. Yes, I still went to “PasigLaban”.
I hired my trusted Angkas driver to pick me up by 4pm. You would know that you are near the venue when you start noticing people wearing different shades of pink. I was supposed to meet my cousins at the venue but to our surprise, there is no cellular signal. Aside from that, you really cannot squish yourself on the massive crowd. Luckily, I was able to find a spot near one of the LED screen. But before that, I have to walk around the area, stand for hours, and try to squish myself on the line. All that without feeling exhausted. Yes, I haven’t feel a single tiredness on my body during the event. Aside from that, this is the first time I witness the generosity of everyone. The kindness. From strangers. That you’ll agree is super rare nowadays. It’s like a whole new feeling of being surrounded by people you didn’t really know but you feel safe. That you belong. Knowing that you are a part of 137,000+ people who witness and felt such warm experience in a form of a rally is something I will forever be proud to be a part.

After VP Leni ended her speech, and after the song Rosas, we (me and my cousins) decided to go out as we do not go along with people exiting the crowd. It was when Ben & Ben started playing. Mind you, I love them. But I came for VP Leni. I do not remember exactly what time the speech ended but I guess that was around 11 pm when we were picked up. We all went home with a ray of hope that finally, soon, someone will help us and lead us for a better Philippines.
To make me remember this important moment, here's the photos I took that memorable day.

Yes, I was about to met my cousins but I luckily ran into Mima Sassa Gurl. My fangirl heart omg! And we are even matching pink polos.
I have more photos but I guess I'll just dump them all on another post because apparently, Tumblr is only allowing 10 photos. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

Nat sighed, fingers twisting around and around each other to give all of her anxiety an outlet. She tried to be level-headed like Sassa, tried to listen to her words and apply them like balm to soothe the rankled parts of her. "Okay," she said, nodding to herself. "Okay. Right, yeah. So it's probably just mind games, right? They're just kids in the pilot seat of a plane they don't know how to fly, pushing all the buttons and seeing what works." She was speaking aloud, speaking to Sassa, but her words were meant entirely for herself. She drew in a long breath and offered another, single nod as though she'd collected herself between Sassa's pep talk and her own. "It's not like I've got anything worth their time, anyway."
She hoped she sounded convincing.
Tumblr media
"I mean...last time it did matter less. They didn't think she was dead then, Nat," Sassa pointed out before pausing, a look of concern settling on her face. "You probably were just picking up on the increased severity of the situation - I"m sure it had nothing to do with you at all," she said after a beat, offering a hint of comfort to Nat, even if she didn't actually believe it. She didn't want to do the opposite of what she wanted - and act so nonplussed that it switched over to suspicious, to give Nat any reason to think this conversation over and focus on it instead of the worry over how she had been treated. "They were definitely taking things a lot more seriously," Sassa added, bobbing her head a few times.

"I've been called worse," he said with a grin and a shrug, not confirming or denying. He watched her lean against the couch and only then did he begin a slow circle around the room. He found a spot across from her to lean, tilting his head, grin like an invitation. "My favorite ways to misbehave usually need a partner, yeah."
Tumblr media
"Liar," Sassa crooned, even though it was just her same excused volleyed back at her. Or maybe because it was - she was, after all, lying. She leaned against the the arm of the couch, her elbow propped on it as she watched Jesse discerningly, making no attempt to hide her observing. "Depends," she said after a moment, shrugging up her shoulders. She certainly wasn't going to enlighten Jesse that she was snooping around - but there was no harm in letting him come to his own conclusions. "It certainly isn't the first time I've walked in on someone up to no good somewhere they shouldn't be...but guess it depends on if your type of of misbehaving needs a partner or not."

Letter meme: NCFOM (I'm watching a movie and these letters are its abbreviation, idk what the questions even are lol)
N: needs way more attention from me.Of my published works; Sassa Flokisdottir, without a doubt, probably one of me most complex characters with the most intensive story-line, she’s a bit daunting to write so she gets left behind too often.
C: is the most open to cuddling.Reagan McCall. She was raising in a family of huggers so cuddling is no issue for her. Curling up with a cat, a pillow, or a Derek, she just can’t sleep alone.
F: is my favorite.…. MC, you know damn well how flaky I am…
O: has the most OCs of their own.Rose Pryor. She daydreamed a lot as a child and made up stories in her head, getting lost in her books and make believe.
M: is the biggest memer.Reagan, I think? She spends a lot of time on her computer, who knows what she’s doing…

Studying How to Study & Evidenced-Based Techniques
If you’re interested in digging deeper on learning how to learn and improving your studying skills, I recommend you check out the Coursera course Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects. The course is suited for any education level and helps you understand how and why study tips work. There is also the companion book, A Mind for Numbers, which is what was used to create the course.
I think it’s very important, especially as a student in higher education, to know how to study. I am a firm believer in evidence-based studying techniques. Here are some of those study tips and research that backs it up.
Sleep
Getting enough sleep is important as a student. Sleep has been proven to function in memory consolidation and flushing of metabolites in the brain. In other words, sleep is important for brain function and memory. As a student, you should strive to get adequate, restful sleep.
Tononi, G., & Cirelli, C. (2014). Sleep and the price of plasticity: from synaptic and cellular homeostasis to memory consolidation and integration. Neuron, 81(1), 12-34.
Stickgold, R., & Ellenbogen, J. M. (2008). Quiet! Sleeping brain at work. Scientific American Mind, 19(4), 22-29.
Memory
What techniques allow you to effectively remember information in a shorter time span? How do you know you know something and can remember it later on a test?
One should first keep the forgetting curve in mind, which is the concept that you forget things over time. You can overcome this curve by using spaced repetition - forcing your brain to actively recall memories in longer and longer time periods. This means studying new material within 15 minutes after learning it, then the next day, and then the next week, and so forth. This is effective because you do not need to study something every single day to remember it. Studying a little bit over time is much more useful than studying in one large session.
Tumblr media
Remember to not fall victim to the illusion of knowledge or fluency illusion - that is, thinking you know the material when you only recognize it. Testing yourself is a great way to combat this, since it forces you to recall information as a memory, and not just recognize information in front of you.

Hall, C. C., Ariss, L., & Todorov, A. (2007). The illusion of knowledge: When more information reduces accuracy and increases confidence. Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 103(2), 277-290.
Focused vs Diffuse Thinking
Focused thinking is when you are focusing attentively on material and using your brain, and diffuse thinking is letting your mind wander. Both modes of thinking are important for learning. You cannot study a topic intensely and expect to master it using only focused thinking - diffuse thinking allows you to strengthen neural pathways and make new connections you may not have been able to before. (It’s why something like “shower thoughts” are so common.) Take advantage of diffuse thinking by first and foremost, getting enough sleep, and taking walks/exercise, switching to another task, or thinking about something else.

UBUNTU
Tumblr media
(Wangel, n.d.)
Ubuntu: “I am because we are”. An ideology that paints Southern Africa as a picture of unity, peace, and selflessness. A concept that recognizes our unconscious binding to each other, and the revelation that every success is through the sharing of ourselves within ourselves. It is an affirmation that being human is not an isolated concept, rather, it is generosity as a domino effect.
However, through the lens of a citizen the busy roads have traffic lights which are often affected by load shedding and inundated with countless beggars which threaten and curse when money isn’t given to them, open spaces which are now being invaded and decreasing property value which is accompanied by high petty and organized crime rates. These challenges which lie within the beauty of the architecture, nature and the history of our country, are indicative of a glaring reality that we are in a recession, and our current economic growth is a mere 0.7%.
This economy which is crippled by corruption and unemployment (Muchara, 2019) engenders the inhumane conditions in which people are born into, grow up, work and age in (Pinkney-Atkinson, 2018). The catastrophe of unemployment hits 37% of the South African population, making it the sixth highest unemployment rate in the world. This number is expected to increase with the retrenchment threats from Eskom, the mines, SABC, Standard Bank and potentially SAA and Edcon. Further, a horrifying 55% of the population live in abject poverty, while 6 million children live below the poverty line (Vavi, 2019).
The approximately 17 million SASSA grants which are issued monthly (Kwach, 2019) to the underprivileged are, to a large extent, the only source of income for families. Consequently, the poor living conditions and abundance of starch-based diets result in malnutrition, a condition that negatively affects individuals both physically and mentally. Developmental delay, muscle weakness, learning difficulties, decreased reaction time and reduced immune system are some of the effects of an unbalanced diet (Weiss, 2016). These effects then result in limited working opportunities in the future (Nordqvist, 2017).
It is no fault of the parents whose children suffer because of our broken system, but naturally they carry the burden of guilt. The naivety and ignorance are far too often the reason people receive help too late, when the progression is far along and the chances of attaining normalcy is decreased.
Often I think ‘What if she came in sooner?’, ‘What if we had known just a little earlier’, ‘what if … ?’ and then I tell myself ‘at least he’s here now, we can help now’  and then focus on the present and future. But, what if it doesn’t have to be that way? What if we can do something from within, that will not only reduce the guilt but make therapy much more effective? What if we can change this cycle of ignorance, and eternal guilt?
Looking through the lens of an occupational therapy student whose focus is on assisting people throughout their lifespan to participate in valued occupations to promote health and prevent, or live with the injury, illness or disability; we can break the cycle – financial constraints need not be an isolated reason for poor health and uninformed choices. Using creative thinking, recycling, education and combined efforts, money management and sanitation skills can be taught, community support groups can be formed and tasked with projects, sustainable gardens can be started, budget-friendly recipes can be invented, and the communities may begin to flourish. Education, promotion and prevention can be from within, direct and relatable. The health of the community, through the radical change in the diet and living conditions, will improve.
These efforts will not necessarily upturn the economy or eradicate any past challenges, but cross-community communication will increase, individual participation will rise, and together human, financial, natural and personal resources will be shared. This sharing will build a strong sense of community, rooted in compassion, togetherness, and resilience.
Afterall, we are the people of Ubuntu. The question is, are we patriotic?
