Everyone talks about the tragedy of animated media getting reboots that replace their excellent art direction with uncanny realism —like the Lion King and its “live action” reboot—- but there’s one series that embodies that tragedy better than anything else. And I need to share it with you all because I can’t be the only one Haunted by it day and night. Please let me tell you the Sad, sad story behind this image:

There was an early 2000s video game trilogy called Sly Cooper, whose main appeal was its super unique art direction, style, and atmosphere. The trilogy had a unique tone focused on a cartoon Phantom Thief who did Moody Atmospheric Heists in a comic-book-inspired world.

The trilogy integrated 2D animation into the game for cutscenes, and the characters-- while low-poly-- were designed to look as much like those flat 2D cartoons with cel-shaded outlines as they could within the limitations of the Ps2.

It took heavy influence from comic books and anime, especially Lupin III. The first game even had alternate anime versions of its 2D cutscenes that you could unlock!

Nearly all the levels took place at night, but the designers talked often about how their goal was to create the illusion of night time through vivid color palettes rather than darkness, taking inspiration from the vivid nighttime cityscapes in Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge.

As a result of their stylized art direction, the visuals-- primarily in the second one, which is the one that focuses the most tightly on Thieving & Moody Atmospheric Heists-- still hold up today.

And then Sly Cooper started appearing in “brand crossover games” and “reboots” and Oh god. Oh no. so that's why no one talks about it anymore.

I am haunted by this. People talk about their favorite cartoon character getting hit with the Uncanny Hyper-Detailed Beam and I instantly think of the sad fate of poor, poor sly cooper, who I am very nostalgic for, and his now-dead franchise that hasn't had a new installment in over a decade.

But to me this really emphasizes how strong art direction is far more important than polygon count, realism, or level of detail. Because there have been similar franchises rebooted in ways that manage to elevate the old 2D-inspired art styles with more modern graphics. Toys for Bob's new takes on Spyro and Crash Bandicoot both had stellar art direction!

But that kind of thoughtful art direction can be difficult to achieve. It's not even the fault of the artists or developers; these things are often beyond their control. But I am glad we're in an era where stylized 3D animation is becoming more popular. I hope more creators continue to realize that there is actually a big demand for media with interesting, unique art styles! also you should play sly 2: band of thieves

Oh my god, I never shared this...

I was intending to make an eene x knd crossover comic with this that would have theoretically taken place directly after the B&M crossover (since the Eds technically did appear) but my motivation to do so fell flat on its ass...

I was going to make Jonny and Plank secret KND members because I thought it'd be fun, and like, his Captain Melonhead persona was his KND alter ego, he already has a secret tree-house base with a bunch of tech, I thought it fit rather well.

Maybe one day I'll think about making it again... who knows. It's a lot of work to make comics for someone with so little free time. 😞

(Also I'll give you a quarter if you can figure out why I assigned Jonny the Numbuh 4031 🤭)

i watched that video and it made me so sad bc even though i'm not someone who follows mark as closely as i do others, many of the shows i've seen had him supporting the whole plot. the highlight of last twilight to me was night, i adored him as nick, he is an extremely competent and versatile actor who had the chance to finally lead a show and... it didn't do well.

you have no idea how angry i get that this is the system they use to give artists more gigs. it makes fans feel responsible for the future of their favs and fuck all of us if it doesn't work out. there are brand events hashtags that are getting more than 1M tweets nowadays, the couples that did the best numbers on LOL got fancons (and mind you, dungjangs are a powerful fandom in the trending game, and even joongdunk were left out bc i think they didn't get to the top-?? of most engaged artists).

so yeah, using hashtags is important, yes. i do think that, since gmm has a bazillion couples now, that hashtags will dictate at least partially which ones will be worth their money and which won't get series for a year or two. talent can just take you so far in an industry like this, and i genuinely think firstkhaotung know this. they have been talking about being old despite being just 26 for months, how they were praying on 2023-2024 merits to get blessed with more work. khaotung has said that he will study acting abroad when he gets to his 30's (though i can't remember when he said that, sorry), most of these people have university degrees in things that don't relate at all to acting or the entertainment industry. it is, by all means, a popularity contest.

idk how well we will do for cat for cash because that will also depend on who the rest of the cast will be, but regardless of that, i do hope we get a nice balance of people wanting to help trending but also people who won't just go around pointing fingers and forcing people to do that. it sounds hypocritical what i am saying, but bear with me, i know how stressful that whole thing can be, and to reach those insane numbers, the tag is just filled with senseless things, and i know it's a pain in the ass, HOWEVER, it doesn't feel like gmm is planning to change the way it works, unless twitter explodes and there's no way of getting it back.

Still thinking about Ace!Sanji but it's Sanuso and every time they're about to have sex, surprisingly enough it's Sanji the one stopping everything and saying he needs some time to think about it first.

He's having a whole crisis because he loves Usopp but not in that way and Usopp is panicking because maybe Sanji doesn't really like boys that much in the end. Then they have THE conversation about their relationship and Sanji tells him what actually is happening and Usopp understands.

He doesn't go directly "I think you might be asexual" but he says "If sex is something you don't want or don't feel like doing that's fine with me". Sanji feels guilty because he doesn't want Usopp to give up something for him but Usopp literally goes "You're more important to me than sex, Sanji. A lot of things are more important to me than sex, actually. I mean- I want to and we could, but if you don't want to, then that's alright too. Being with you is all I need". And it's the first time Sanji feels at peace with that part of himself.
