Lingshan Hermit: Sometimes There’s Only a Thin Line Between Transcending Cultural Conditioning and Simply Being Uncivilized
Between the 8th and 12th centuries, ancient India was home to a group of great accomplished beings—individuals utterly unlike the worldly. Even today, we still hear tales of their extraordinary deeds. Among them were beggars, kings, musicians, and hunters. Some survived on fish entrails; some were perpetually drunk yet could command the sun to remain still; some flew through the sky and engaged in yogic union with dakinis. In their time, their actions were often incomprehensible to ordinary people, yet all of their shocking behaviors were rooted in profound realization.
Ever since Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Rgya mtsho Rinpoche proclaimed that “wisdom is more important than morality,” a new wave of so-called "great accomplished ones" has emerged, seemingly unbound by moral constraints. It appears that they have cast aside morality, taking Rinpoche’s words as license to do so. One must admit, this has in some ways opened the floodgates of their desires, allowing them to indulge their impulses without shame, completely unburdened by concepts of right and wrong.
I am an ordinary person, so I cannot discern whether such behavior—reminiscent of those ancient Indian siddhas—is truly the conduct of realized beings, or merely worldly indulgence disguised with spiritual jargon. But more often than not, I categorize it as the latter. So, when I saw a Black man nonchalantly taking a shower in a university classroom in the U.S., I instinctively assumed he was doing so not because he had transcended social norms, but because he had never been civilized to begin with—he did not know that public bathing violates common decency, or that normal human beings don't do such things in front of others. That’s what I assumed.
He may never have heard the phrase “wisdom is more important than morality,” but in essence, he and the others are of the same kind.
A few months ago on social media, I saw footage from a university in California: a professor was giving a lecture to a dozen students when, in a corner of the back row, a student began smearing body wash on himself. His entire body and head were covered in white foam—he was joyfully bathing mid-class. A similar scene took place in the New York subway: an older African man with a high ponytail calmly took out his bathing supplies while seated, stripped down to his underwear, and began lathering soap onto his neck and belly. The surrounding passengers, visibly alarmed, began gathering their belongings and making a hasty exit.
So, have such people attained realization? Perhaps. Maybe they are emanations of the Buddha. Maybe they’re just fools. Who can say?
You could argue that their behavior resembles those 8th-century Indian siddhas. But resemblance does not equal identity. The ancient masters acted from deep realization of emptiness and the illusory nature of worldly values. Take Luipa, one of the 84 Mahasiddhas, who consumed fish entrails only after being scolded by a dakini—for him, it was an intentional act to transcend the duality of good and bad food.
But those who bathe in classrooms are more likely doing so out of ignorance—they simply don’t know that bathing in public is inappropriate. Or they know, but refuse to conform. They come from a culture where mating and bathing don’t require privacy. Their actions are not about transcending habits but about continuing them. In their case, dressing properly and observing social norms would be the real challenge—the real spiritual breakthrough. Nudity is not their obstacle; wearing clothes is. Thus, their behavior is not about spiritual discipline but about self-indulgence. It runs counter to the Buddhist path.
(Relatively speaking, the Black people from the Gone with the Wind era were far more endearing—their “self” had not yet been unleashed into total anarchy.)
Some so-called Vajrayana practitioners are doing much the same. Though they may not bathe in classrooms or parade around in sheer clothing, they too are simply continuing their habitual lifestyles, but with better camouflage. They know a bit of Buddhist theory. They can quote Chögyam Trungpa. They speak of Dzogchen. They repeat the mantra “wisdom is more important than morality.” This makes them appear like the former category. But they are still in the latter.
Trungpa Rinpoche, when teaching in America, required his hippie students to dress like gentlemen and drill like soldiers. He emphasized discipline. Asking a beggar to behave like a beggar does not challenge his conditioning; asking a beggar to dress like a Disney princess does.
Breaking with traditional morality is only difficult for those who actually uphold moral standards. Only for such people—those who dare not cross the boundary of ethical conduct—does transcending morality hold any real meaning. For those who have never practiced morality to begin with, transcending it is a farce. It costs them nothing. They’ve always lived that way. Asking them to transcend morality is like asking a fish to leave the land to learn how to swim.
These people have never had morality; they just hadn’t yet found a spiritual teacher to endorse their lifestyle. Now they have one—and to them, it’s a festival. Their behavior may seem like they’re breaking the shackles of cultural norms, but in reality, they’re using it as an excuse to continue indulging in their habits. This is why many societal outsiders not accepted by traditional Buddhism gravitate toward Vajrayana. Because they can pretend to be spiritual without changing anything. No effort. No sacrifice. No transformation. Their greed, anger, and ignorance are allowed to flourish and even receive sanctification. They can even look down on those who uphold morality.
They are the worst role models for spiritual practice.
Sometimes I even think it might be better if such people never encountered the Dharma. Or perhaps they should study under a more traditional Buddhist teacher—a strict, by-the-book kind of teacher. That might be better suited to them. But perhaps they never had any intention of truly practicing at all. What they were really looking for was a teacher who could sanctify their behavior, who could elevate their dopamine highs to a peak.
These not-so-wise individuals let their “self” exploit every available tool and opportunity to satisfy itself. When they hear “wisdom is more important than morality,” they take it as a passport to unleash the self—no more shame about having slept with 300 men. In fact, they flaunt it.
They brag about being drunkards, womanizers, flaunt their tattoos, their immorality, boast about being unapologetic bastards—and their determination to remain so.
But those who are truly wise, when they hear that phrase, understand: Morality is only second to wisdom in importance—it is not unimportant. They don’t then go out and sleep with 300 people. They certainly don’t shower on the subway.
So, sometimes, the line between transcending cultural conditioning and merely being uncivilized is razor-thin. Others can’t distinguish which side you’re on, nor are they obliged to. Only you can discern this for yourself. Only you can change it.
So the question is: Will you continue to deceive yourself, indulge the self, and mislead others? Or will you embark on the true path of transcending the self?

That said, AgentOps (the tool) offers developers insight into agent workflows with features like session replays, LLM cost tracking, and compliance monitoring. As one of the most popular Ops tools in AI, later on the article we will go through its functionality with a tutorial.
What is AgentOps?
